A Festive Fourth at Penn Lake Park Borough

On July 2, the Penn Lake Association sponsored a patriotic bike parade for the children. Participants decorated their bicycles (also scooters, strollers, toy cars) with their best red, white, and blue, and rolled down Lakeview Drive, accompanied by patriotic music. The parade ended at the Community House with refreshments for the children, and prizes for the top 3 decorated vehicles.

At dusk the same day, Penn Lake residents were treated to a spectacular 40 minute fireworks display, presented by the Roman family, who have been doing this for around 20 years.

What happens now?

by Ruth Isenberg The Interstate 80 bridge over the Lehigh River will not be tolled under the Major Bridges Public-Private Partnership program of PennDOT, and the replacement of the bridge won’t be paid for the way PennDOT envisioned it. The temporary injunction put in place by Commonwealth Court at the end of May was made permanent last week.

The bridge still needs repairs, but PennDOT will now have to come up with a fairer way of funding the work. It will have to do the same thing in the eight other areas, including nearby Nescopeck, where the P-3 program was being implemented.

The way the P-3 program was imposed on local communities has created massive distrust in PennDOT across the state. The projects were presented as done deals, despite window-dressing public meetings. No real effort was made to assist the communities like White Haven and East Side that would have been harmed by having traffic diverted through them.

There may be a place for public-private partnerships in the future, for projects like the rebuilding of Interstate 80 from the state line toward Mount Pocono, or improvements to the Schuylkill Expressway. But PennDOT will have to do a much better job selling the benefits to the communities that will be affected, as well as to the legislature. Tolling would have raised far more money than what was needed to repair the bridges, without local benefit. Next time around, the agency would be well advised to be up front with the process, and actually work with the communities it is supposed to serve.

The front page photo is of a painting by artist Douglas Hoffman, a student at the Weatherly Area Middle School, that is being given to the family that is the donor of the Justin McCarthy Primitive Art Award.

Hoffman won the award in 1981. 1982 is the 11th year the award has been given to winners in the Weatherly Area.

The Weatherly Area Pharmacy placed a full page ad, and sponsored the mailing of this issue of The Journal-Herald to all homes in Weatherly.

Penn Lake borough voted to contract with a company to remove lily pads. Council member Paul Rogan told council he had taken water samples around the lake, and the coliform count ranges from 13 to over 8,000. Rogan suggested tests be done weekly. This is part of proving the need for sewers.

The Crestwood School Board voted to raise school taxes by 11 mills.

Lausanne Township supervisors gave themselves a raise for when they are re-elected. The cost would total about $4,500, with no source designated from where the funds will come.

The township’s tax base was reportedly $4,000 per year.

Pay would rise from $20 a month to $54.

Kidder Township supervisors will look at joining the Carbon County recycling program. Kidder will look at who owns Spring Hill Road, as the road conditions have become so bad that garbage haulers will not go up it to pick up.

Weatherly Borough manager Jay Willard was the special guest of the Senior Citizens Friendship Club at their meeting in late June.

He invited the seniors to provide input about the difficulties they see in the community and with their personal activities.

The Friendship Club gave a tribute to Fathers.

Valeria Funk, chaplain, read a poem: “A Father.”

Ed Hensel, accompanied on piano by his wife Grace, sang “How Long Since You Talked with the Lord?”

Grace also played the piano for the group singing. The club will have its annual picnic in Eurana Park on July 16.

Publishers Jay and Clara Holder celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past Sunday.

Appearing at the Shawnee Playhouse through August 2 is Broadway’s Gypsy.

This week’s dining article was about a wonderful homemade Italian meal from Nando’s Restaurant in Kidder Township.

John Makaravitz wrote a column on fly fishing.

Phil Engman was in 4th place in the collegiate division of the golf

tournament which was part of the Keystone Games.

Navy Ensign Charles Stoffa was recently commissioned upon graduation from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The 11th annual McCluskey Family reunion was held June 20 at Hickory Run State Park.

Ira Berger & Sons celebrated a grand opening sale at their new space on Route 940 in Freeland.

Ruth Isenberg wrote a story about an overnight trip to Corning (with Seth), featuring a stop at Pierce’s 1891 House for dinner and a half day at the Corning Museum of Glass.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Borough Council of Weatherly Borough, Carbon County, Pennsylvania will adopt an Ordinance at a meeting to be held on Monday, July 25, 2022, at 4:00 P.M. prevailing time, at the Weatherly Municipal Building located at 61 West Main Street, Weatherly, PA., an Ordinance entitled: AN ORDINANCE OF THE BOROUGH OF WEATHERLY, CARBON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA PROVIDING FOR SERVICE COST RECOVERY.” A summary of the contents of the Ordinance is as follows: A new Chapter of the Weatherly Borough Code shall be added regarding Service Cost Recovery.

Section 1. Findings and Intent. The Fire Department uses specialized emergency rescue tools and equipment and hazardous material abatement for their emergency responses. The intent is to grant the Borough of Weatherly the authority to seek recovery of reasonable costs of responding to emergency incidents.

Section 2. Definitions. Reasonable Costs.

Section 3. Recovery of Costs.

The Borough is authorized to recover reasonable costs for the use of tools, equipment and materials involving any hazardous material environmental fire safety and/or rescue incident operation including vehicular accidents. A Schedule of Rates will be established by the Fire Department. The cost identified will

be recovered from any identified insurance carrier or person or persons directly by the Borough or by an attorney or through a third party billing service acting as a contracted agent for such costs.

Section 4. Requirement to pay for reasonable costs. Any insurance carrier or person shall be liable for the reimbursement of costs unless that person has paid to the Borough a tax which funds at least in part the services which the Fire Department provides.

Section 5. Severability.

The full text of the Ordinances in their entirety may be examined at the Weatherly Borough Municipal Building located at 61 West Main Street, Weatherly, Pennsylvania, Monday through Friday during regular business hours. A copy of the full text of the proposed Ordinance has also been. provided to The Journal Herald at 211 Main Street, White Haven, PA 18661, Pennsylvania, and the Carbon County Law Library located at the Carbon County Courthouse, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and may be examined there.

MAUREEN BAAB Maureen Baab, 62, of Mountain Top, passed away at home, Tuesday, June 28, 2022 with family by her side.

Born in Princeton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late William and Sophie Monaghan and was a member of St. Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Wapwallopen, where she was a past Sunday School teacher, Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She enjoyed bee keeping; gardening, bird watching and spending time with family. She was employed as a production manager for Bic in Pittston and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Maureen is survived by her loving family, husband of 26 years, John Baab; daughter, Erica Baab of Wapwallopen; sister, Kathleen Wall of Trenton, NJ; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service were conducted July 2, from the Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation, Mountain Top with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Wapwallopen, and interment in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Lehighton Band returns for concerts at Weatherly’s Eurana Park The Lehighton Band under the direction of Bradley Cressley returns for a summer concert series at Weatherly’s Eurana Park, after a two year absence during the pandemic. The concert is presented free to the public by the Weatherly, Borough this Sunday, July 10 at 7 p.m.

The concert will open with a Fanfare and The StarSpangled Banner arranged

by Bill Moffit, followed by Sousa’s The Liberty Bell March. Steve Reineke’s Rise of the Firebird gives a salute to Native Americans. Two great American hymns God of our Fathers and The Battle Hymn of the Republic are merged for A Nation’s Prayer arranged by James D. Ployhar. Seth’s Sightings This is one of the strangest things Ruth and I have ever sighted: On the way home this past Saturday, we drove by the Lehigh Valley Airport, then angled up on Howertown Road towards Lehighton. On our way, we were stopped by a harem of peacocks, about eight of them, that were blocking the road in front of the Allen Township Fire Company.

Cars, including ours, chased the birds off the road towards the Fire Co. Then we continued on towards home. How they were there will remain a mystery. This Tuesday, I called Allen Township and they had no news.

A more normal sightings

was a pair of bald eagles that are nesting atop the cell tower off Interstate 80 near Blakeslee. I saw them from the highway, one on the nest and the other on a cell arm.

Here’s to hoping they hatch chicks.

Congrats to the guys at the Reading, Blue Mountain mechanics shop for putting the sleek double diesel back in service. It was pulling the 11 a.m. tourist train out of Jim Thorpe on Saturday.

As we waited at the traffic light in Jim Thorpe, we noticed somebody walking around in a bear costume. It turned to show the Lehigh Gorge Railroad logo on a jean jacket it was wearing.

Driving in to Jim Thorpe from Weatherly, there are two plus miles of wild rhododendron by the road, nearly all the way in to Jim Thorpe.

Bethlehem Restaurant Week, which ended July 2, offered a three-course meal at the Hotel Bethlehem for $40 each as a choice. We went on the final day and enjoyed a glorious Hotel Bethlehem meal seated in front of one of their great windows in their terrace room overlooking Main Street and Moravian College.

On July 4, we were part of a group cheering on the Iron Pigs from their left field party deck. It was a good game, a 5-1 win, which included the final professional appearance of 34 year-old former big league pitcher Aaron Barrett, who pitched a 1-2-3 inning, the retired. There was a big fireworks display launched from inside the stadium at the end of the game, then an extended video tribute to Barrett.

From the hilltop where the Iron Pigs’ stadium is, I could see fireworks displays from all around Allentown. At one point there were as many as seven going at once, and we could see the shows, big and small, lined up for what seemed to be miles. It was like this for the better part of an hour. Given the distances involved, it was all color and flash, without the bang… really nice.

Looking ahead for us, this Friday and Saturday, Ruth and I will pick a nice grassy spot on the hillside

at Briggs Farm each evening of the Briggs Farm Blues Fest. Their weekend again has some of the finest Blues talent in the country performing. The farm is west on I-80 to Route 93, then north towards Nescopeck to the festival, about a half hour’s drive from White Haven. Tickets for each day, and for two days, are on sale online, or at the gate.

Much Ado About Nothing is the Shakespeare play of the season at the PA Shakespeare Festival at DeSales University. It opens on the 13th and runs most days through August 7. We are looking at dates to go as we are expecting a great performance, due to the cast.

Saint Patrick’s parish in White Haven will hold its ‘Mini-Festival’ on July 15 and 16, fundraising for the parish with food, games, a flea market and more.

July 16 and 17 features a regional Pow-Wow at Camp Rotowanis in Drums, just west of us off the I-80 Route 309 exit, then south to the

first traffic signal, then turn west (right) and follow the signs). Some locals are involved in this event. It’s a chance to learn about American culture, and there are some wonderful crafts.

The following weekend features NASCAR at Pocono Raceway, starting with ARCA on Friday the 22nd, the trucks and Xfinity series races on Saturday, and the big NASCAR race that Sunday. At night that weekend are the opening concerts offered by the Pocono Mountains Music Festival. We plan to attend a show tunes concert on Saturday.

It’s lily season, with my first bed in happy full bloom, plus lots of lilies in bloom around White Haven and Weatherly.

UFOs seen at Cranberry Quilt Guild meeting Numerous UFOs are showing up at every Cranberry Quilt Guild meeting, and they are beautiful. Guild members were challenged by president,Deb Kessel to list their UFO, or unfinished quilt projects. Each month a number off the list is selected and members are encouraged to ‘finish’ that object; be it a quilt, wall hanging or table set. The challenge is being very well received and members are anxious to display these items at the upcoming Quilt show.

The 2022 Cranberry Quilt Guild show will be held September 17 and 18 at the Weatherly Area Middle school. On display will be quilts of all sizes from king size to mini. The guild has had many challenge projects throughout the past years, and all of these will be displayed during the

show, along with many new projects still in progress. A vendor area is planned along with a bake sale and the fun Quilt Boutique, featuring handmade gifts and holiday themed pieces that are unique and one of a kind; all for purchase.

The mini quilt raffle is always a big interest with mini quilts 22 inches or smaller being offered as raffle prizes. The quilt show is the first since before the pandemic, and promises to be bigger and better than ever in a much larger event space. Vendor and show information can be obtained by calling show chairwoman Deb at 570-436-1469.

Community service projects are a big part of the guild. This year members are hard at work on baby quilts,

The event is also gathering together many in the community. Hazleton’s Poppy Press Coffee Company will be providing food trucks during the day and will be donating all proceeds to the ICS scholarship fund. Volunteers from several organizations are helping to prepare for the event, including six students and two job coaches from the Hazleton Area School District. The HASD students are part of the Professional Connection Experience program

with the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Job coaches are serving with Living Unlimited, Inc. Volunteers are helping to sort and organize the winter clothes in preparation for the sale. “My hope is that in giving of their time and blessing us with their hard work, that they will be blessed in return by being a part of a good cause.

I hope they spread the word and come out and shop for great deals on the day of the sale,” Mollendor said.

In addition to the fill-abag for $5 promotion, everything inside the store will be 50% off and the Christmas room will be set up for early Christmas decoration shopping. The sale is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Thrift Store location of 725 N Locust St. in Hazleton.

ida state titles, and Pickett was named Florida’s Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2012. Pickett went on to play college soccer for her home state Florida State Seminoles, and she also played on the Under-17 and Under-23 national teams.

Since 2016, Pickett has played for several pro teams, starting with Seattle, then Orlando, and today for the North Carolina Courage. She has also played internationally (on loan from American teams) on pro teams in Australia and Cyprus.

Pickett’s consistent success across multiple levels of the game inspires athletes everywhere, especially those who share a limb difference.

Markovchick, Dempsey are Van Horn Memorial Scholarship winners Weatherly Area High School graduate Rhianne Markovchick and Marian Catholic High School grad Rhiannon Dempsey are the recipients of the 2022 Brian Van Horn Memorial Scholarship. Each student will receive $4,000 to further their education.

Markovchick is the daughter of Rachael and Brian Markovchick. An honor roll student, she is the president of the Student Government Association, treasurer of the Class of 2022, and a member

Rhianne Markovchick of the National Honor Soci-

ety, Spanish National Honor Society, and Future Business Leaders of America. She is the captain of the state-qualifying Weatherly Envirothon Team. She also was a captain for the Weatherly Area track and field team, qualifying for the PIAA Championships in the 100-meter hurdles this spring.

Outside of school, she is a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church, and studies gymnastics at the Northeast Gymnastics Academy. She is employed by Wood’s Ice

Cream. This fall, she will attend Kutztown University to major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship and compete with the school’s track and field team.

Rhiannon Dempsey was involved in many academic and social activities at Marian HS, including National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council, HOSA Future Professionals (vice president), Skills USA, S.A.D.D. and Catholic Relief Services. As a senior she was

engaged in the Emerging Health Professionals Program through Penn State University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and Schuylkill County Vo-Tech.

During this program, she became interested in pursuing a career in nursing.

Dempsey has been accepted to the St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame this fall, in the Bachelor of Nursing program. She plans to pursue a career as a psychiatric nurse.

Local teams eliminated from D-18 10-12 LL Tournament The District 18 Little League Tournaments are winding down this week, with champions being determined in three different divisions. In the

10-12 Tournament, all-stars from both Weatherly and White Haven took part in the double-elimination event that began on June 24.

Competing alongside

players from the McAdoo and Beaver Meadows areas, the Tri-County/ Weatherly all-stars opened on June 27 with a 5-1 victory over Anthracite/Towamensing.

Last Friday, Franklin Township needed seven innings to edge Tri-County/ Weatherly 6-5, sending the locals into the elimination bracket. There, they dropped a 13-3 verdict to Jim Thorpe on Sunday, falling from the tournament.

Meanwhile, White Haven players teamed up with Freeland for the

tournament. They opened by routing Hazleton 16-4 in five innings on June 27.

Freeland/White Haven drew perennial power Valley West next, and lost 22-0 to drop into the elimination bracket.

On Sunday, Valley East scored a 14-6 win to send Freeland/White Haven out of the tournament.

Four teams remained in the 10-team tournament as of Tuesday. Valley West and Franklin Township were still unbeaten and scheduled to meet in the winner’s bracket final. Valley East

and Jim Thorpe were slated to face off in an elimination game the same evening. A champion will be crowned

by Saturday or Sunday, with the district champ moving on to sectional play.

Meanwhile, the District 18 8-10 Tournament has reached the championship round, as Valley West and Franklin Township won their respective brackets in the North and South. They will meet in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday in McAdoo, with the winner advancing to sectionals.

The Weatherly/Tri-County entry in the South bracket lost to Tamaqua 12-0, then came back to beat Anthracite 9-1. Tamaqua then downed Weatherly/Tri-County 10-0 in an elimination game.

There were no local entries in the District 18 9-11 Tournament. Jim Thorpe had reached the final and was waiting on either Tamaqua or Valley West to determine this weekend’s championship matchup.

Lady Wreckers’ vonFrisch named All-State for softball Weatherly Area’s Maddie vonFrisch and Marian Catholic’s Morgan Kelly were named to the Class A second team as pitchers on this year’s Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association (PaHSSBCA) All-State Team. The team was selected from well over 400 nominations by high school coaches and media members statewide. A first team and second team were then voted on and chosen for each of the six classifications by the PaHSSBCA committee.

In addition, the committee expanded its awards this year to include an overall Pennsylvania Pitcher of the Year and an overall Player of the Year, as well as a Pitcher

of the Year and Player of the Year in each of the six classifications. At Weatherly, vonFrisch was the Lady Wreckers’ leading hitter and their lights-out pitcher, reaching double figures in strikeouts in nearly every game this season. The junior standout also surpassed 300 career strikeouts midway through the campaign.

Kelly, just a sophomore, went 14-6 in the circle for the Schuylkill League Division III champion Fillies, with a 2.37 ERA. She completed 19 of her 20 starts, recorded seven shutouts, and struck out 185 in 112 innings. At the plate, Kelly batted a crisp .429 with three home runs and 20 RBI.

The Pennsylvania Position Player of the Year was Deirdre Flaherty, a catcher from Mt. Lebanon.

The overall co-Pitchers of the Year were Payton List of Beaver Area and Julia Shearer of North Penn.

Pittston Area’s Gianna Adams was named the Class 5A Pitcher of the Year, one of six Patriots to make the All-State Team.

Schuylkill League and District 11 champion TriValley had six players named to the Class A All-State Team. In all, 17 players from the Schuylkill League were named to the All-State team in their respective classifications.
