At a special meeting held September 29, the Weatherly Area School Board voted unanimously to appoint Daniel M. Malloy as the District’s new Superintendent.

Malloy can begin as superintendent as soon as he completes arrangements with his current employer, the Hanover Area School District (HASD).

There, he has served as high school principal for nearly 10 years.

Malloy has worked for the HASD for 24 years, starting as an instructor in 1997. He was promoted to assistant secondary principal in 2005, and to principal in 2012.

He has a Master’s Degree from Bloomsburg University, his Superintendent letter of eligibility from Delaware Valley College, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Wilkes University.

He resides in Hanover.

Our strong local focus expands nationally, however, when the news directly impacts our community. That was the case recently when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of construction of an interstate gas pipeline that our community does not want.

We covered events commemorating the lives of 18 county residents who died in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

There are nearly 300 newspapers in Pennsylvania just like ours. All of them are well read and essential to the fabric of their communities. They cover local government, schools, sports, arts and culture, business,

houses of worship, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations.

These local newspapers publish pictures of schoolchildren at spelling bees and centenarians celebrating birthdays. They cover 4-H fairs, publish obituaries, report on stream cleanouts, and not only provide residents with severe weather forecasts but also explain the human and economic toll in the aftermath of storms. Local newspapers report on the politics and public policy that are vital to citizens’ health and welfare.

“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government,’’ Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1787, “I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

As we consider the value of newspapers with the beginning of National Newspaper Week on Oct. 3, take time to think about how your newspaper impacts your quality of life. To me, newspapers record the first draft of history. They are essential. They are an archive of events. Everything that is printed is important to someone.

Enjoy your newspaper. If you are not already a subscriber, become one. Read public notices and attend a municipal meeting. Write a letter to your editor. Send a tip to the newsroom. Watch a news video; listen to a podcast. Do business with your newspaper’s advertisers. Ask a journalist to speak to your class or civic group. Your support will make your community stronger and a great place to live.

We started our week with the trip to the Bloomsburg Fair that I had written about last week. Our drive west was at the hour when we could enjoy the beautiful colors of the sunset on our ride in.

I have a friend who tells me he has great parking karma.

In a tribute to him, we found an open parking space in a backyard within 50 feet of the middle gate that we intended to use. We like Gate 11 because it puts you in two minutes at the junction where you could go south past the cider mill and exhibits down there, or west toward some of our favorite food vendors, and the row of Fair display buildings.

Our first stop that evening was into the Agriculture building, in search of this

year’s Great Pumpkin. There were also all the entries for the plants and produce, cakes, pies and jams. It was fun to browse, and at the far end we were rewarded with the display of giant pumpkins and even a giant squash. This year’s biggies were 1,350 pounds for the pumpkin, and 536 pounds for the squash.

That building also gave us a chance to buy some local honey and local maple syrup from vendors. We now have enough for the winter.

Next we went to Bissinger’s Orchard’s stand for peach dumplings with their homemade cinnamon ice cream.

photography and painting, to crocheting and quilting. There was some beautiful stuff in there.

It was getting a bit cool, and so we chose to wrap up our visit by getting a gallon of fresh-pressed cider from the Benton Cider Mill before carrying our purchases out for the very short walk to our car.

It was good to be back at the Fair.

Regarding our work week, our main computer developed a problem that made it unusable last week, so we made an appointment at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Whitehall. It was for Saturday, right after noon, so we made our drive, avoiding the traffic at Jim Thorpe to meet the genius who scheduled the

repair with a promise of having it done in about a week.

That done, we drove to the Allentown Farmer’s Market and did some shopping, including buying items for a picnic lunch, which we then had under a tree in a quiet corner of the Fairgrounds.

We then headed home, arriving in time for the Penn State football teams win.

On Sunday, we stopped by Octurbofest at The Hangout at the Turnpike to support this new event, then went on to Heckman’s Orchards for some pears, and Snyder’s for apples.

Favorite apples for us at this time of year are Winesaps, which are still not ripe — perhaps next week.

Having the dogs with us, we drove into Hickory Run State Park via Old Stage Road in Albrightsville, running a gauntlet through a flock of geese who were out in the field grazing on fresh grass.

Bull, our German Shorthair Pointer, was wide-eyed as we passed through, but he didn’t bark at them. Spooky was uninterested. Each got a nice walk into the park.

We listened to the Eagles lose, and later that night, listened again to the Patriots loss. It was not a good NFL week. As it’s going, I might shift most of my cheering to college games through November. This year, I am paying mind to the Colgate Raiders, Temple Owls, and through Frank Fear of The Sports Column, the Presbyterian College Blue Hose.

Sightings has us appreciating a much improved foliage display. We’ve not seen full colors yet, but in spots there are spectacular reds and oranges. With the nights being

a bit warmer, I am hoping that the leaves hold on through Halloween.

An owl set up near our home on an evening when we arrived home late. It was a treat to hear it calling / hooting.

On Saturday, we’ll have the dogs at the Pet Parade and Costume Party in the 300 block of Main Street in White Haven, starting at 3:30 and finishing just after 6. Come by and visit with us, it will be a fun afternoon.

This is also the weekend for the Eagle Arms Gun Show at Split Rock Resort just in time to get hunting supplies and cold weather gear.

From this Thursday through Sunday will be The Covered Bridge Festival, now at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 on Sunday). Parking and admission are still free. Knoebels is open on its own this weekend for the first Hallo-Fun days, Friday evening 5-9, Saturday 2-9 and Sunday noon to 5.

Next week is the start of the WBS Penguins AHL season.

The first home game is Saturday the 16th. It’s a group special night, so if you can get 10 or more people to come, tickets for all of you will be $18 to $12 each (depending on your seating) and include a gift and a McDonald’s Value Meal voucher — so a really good deal, and you get to see the new Penguins team take the ice.

There’s a regular home game on Sunday afternoon, starting at 3. Regular group prices are $18.75, $21.75 and $23.75. Next regular Penguins home game is on the 22nd.

What Do the US Coast Guard and Reindeer have in common?

Capt. “Hell Roaring” Michael Healy brought herds of reindeer to Alaska from Russian Siberia to save starving natives, settlers, and towns. The crew of the Cutter Unalga set up an orphanage for children left parentless by the Spanish Influenza. The Coast Guard has always had the best interest of the people in mind.

With a commitment that persists to the modern day, the Coast Guard is closely tied to Alaska, its people, its industry, and its unpredictable weather. The Coast Guard provided judges, doctors and law enforcement to the early settlers and was the only agency that kept order and prevented pirates from operating during the gold rush.

The Coast Guard’s Mascot is the Alaskan Brown Bear.

WH Ambulance Board welcomes new EMT Submitted by Donna Woodring White Haven Ambulance Board welcomed George Evans as an EMT joining the staff at their September meeting. Secretary and Treasurer reports were accepted as entered.

EMS reported 35 calls for the

month, 17 BLS and 12 ALS. AEDs are ordered and will be arriving soon.

By-Laws were reviewed with discussion on a few areas. They will be sent to an attorney for legal review before being voted on.

The apple dumplings sale has concluded and will be available for pickup at the station on Saturday, October 9

and Sunday, October 10. We may have extra for those who missed the sale.

The dumplings are from Rohrbach’s in Catawissa, also available at the Bloomsburg Fair.

The annual pumpkin sale will also take place Octoer 9 and 10 at the station. Come and pick out your favorite pumpkin.

Chrissy Gower has been successful in securing a much needed computer system, free of charge, for the station. We will buy only the software.

This should arrive in the near future.

Wrecker runners remain unbeaten The Weatherly Area boys’ cross country team continued its dominant season last Wednesday, easing past Schuylkill Haven (20-40), Nativity (17-44) and Gillingham Charter (15-50) in a Schuylkill League Division II-III crossover meet held in Pottsville.

Jacob Parker crossed the finish line first in 18:25 and teammates Ricky Ray (19:17), Frankie Willis (19:40) and Michael Berger (19:50) followed in third, fourth and fifth place respectively, to lead the unbeaten Wreckers. Brady Walters (ninth, 22:38) and Nathan Tripp (10th, 22:57) rounded out the top 10 for Weatherly.

Schuylkill Haven’s Astin Daniel placed second overall in 19:12, and Nativity had the 6-7 spots.

Valley View turns back Comet gridders It was a great start for the Crestwood Comets, and a not-so-pleasant finish for the Valley View Cougars.

Last Friday night in Blakely, the Comets jumped the state-ranked Cougars early, scoring the game’s first

touchdown for a quick 7-0 lead.

From there, Valley View regrouped in plenty of time for a 38-7 non-conference victory that proved to be a costly one for the Cougars. Standout quarterback Adam Howanitz

and running back Anthony Memo both left the game in the second half with apparent leg injuries, but by then Valley View was well in control en route to its sixth consecutive victory.

Just two plays into the

game, junior running back Noah Schultz cut back and sprinted 77 yards untouched for the score and an early Crestwood lead. Ethan Shudak toed the extra point.

But Howanitz and Valley View responded in kind. The

Explore a rare land that protects Pocono waters The trail at Thomas Darling Preserve in Blakeslee takes you right into the thick of things, right from the start.

Brodhead Watershed Association offers a guided hike on Sunday, Oct. 17, to explore this densely wooded alder swamp – part of another world, a relic of the glacier that receded 12,000 years ago.

The ground is squishy with a patchwork of sphagnum moss, ferns and club mosses, among the most ancient kinds of plants. The foliage of longgone spring wildflowers and partridge berry blankets the wet forest floor.

At the heart of this quiet, old place is a single-track boardwalk in the middle of

650 acres of glacier-created wetland. The boardwalk is just inches above the trembling expanse of watery, mossy, shrubby terrain centered on 2,500 acres of protected land. Wetlands stretch out all around, a healthy mosaic of every kind of inland wetland found in Pennsylvania, including peat bogs.

Places like this are rare, very rare, in the world. This ecosystem protects air, water, unique plants and animals, us, and all life on the planet we call home. Like an enormous sponge that stretches to the horizon, these complex wetlands have stored, filtered, and released water for millennia, in ways we still don’t fully understand.

There is no charge for this guided hike with naturalist Patti O’Keefe. The preserve is near Blakeslee. Directions will be provided to registrants.

One play later, Hilling powered in the end zone for his second touchdown of the game and a 35-7 lead. The Cougars capped the scoring with a fourth-quarter field goal.

Schultz finished with 150 yards on 16 carries for the Comets, who dipped to 1-5.

Chase Pugh added 35 yards on 10 totes. Quarterback Jay Swank hit on 7-of-18 passes for 47 yards, completing passes to six different receivers.

Abington Heights will invade Crestwood Stadium this Friday night.

Comets double up on Valley West with hat tricks The Crestwood boys’ soccer team doubled up on Wyoming Valley West last week, notching a 6-3 Wyoming Valley Conference victory over the Spartans.

Ben Rossi and Hunter Rolles each recorded a hat trick with three goals apiece, producing all of the Crestwood offense. Rolles assisted on two of Rossi’s goals as well, and Collin Bogdon also posted an assist.

Winning goalkeeper Cole Kranson made four saves.

Girls’ Soccer

Crestwood 2, Bloomsburg 1 - In a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Emma Suhoski scored a pair of first-half goals, each off a Kennedie Huber assist, and Crestwood held on for the victory. Elaina Flick scored an unassisted goal in the second half for Bloomsburg.

Crestwood outshot Bloomsburg 105, but Bloom had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Mia Pollack was in goal for the win, notching five saves. Alyssa Shuman had nine saves for Bloomsburg.

Crestwood 0, Wyoming Valley West 0 - At Kingston, the Lady Comets’ Mia Pollack recorded 28 saves while Valley West’s Mackenzie Bowling had 20 saves in a scoreless draw in their Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 battle.

The Lady Spartans outshot Crestwood 32-16, but they couldn’t put the ball past Pollack. The Lady Comets held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Cross Country

Girls Molly DeMarzo finished first overall in 20:21 and Crestwood teammates Ella Novelli (20:35) and Maggie Kozich (20:42) were second and third, respectively, to lead the Lady Comets past Pittston Area (15-48) and Wilkes-Barre (15-50) in a WVC cluster meet at MMI Prep’s course in Foster Twp. Hazleton Area’s Jillian Wolk (20:54)

and Milana Daiute (21:36) were 4-5 overall, and MMI Prep’s Mary Kate Kupsky placed sixth (22:12). Crestwood’s Ella Kozich was seventh in 22:33.

Boys MMI’s Woobie Kupsky was the individual race winner on his home course, but Crestwood had six of the top 10 finishers in sweeping past Pittston Area (19:44) and Wilkes-Barre Area (15-50) in their WVC cluster meet last week. Kupsky covered the 3.1 miles in 18:11, 33 seconds ahead of runnerup Weston Medvetz (18:44) of Crestwood. Nash Greene (fifth, 19:42), James Modrovsky (sixth, 19:58), Jack Scanlon (seventh, 19:59), Conor Buckley (eighth, 20:14) and Ryan Kozich (ninth, 20:50) added top-10 finishes for the Comets.

Pittston Area’s Preston Klem came in third in 19:01 and Hazleton Area’s Nick Hebel was fourth in 19:30.

Girls’ Volleyball

Crestwood 3, Tunkhannock 2 Jadyn Hooper had 11 kills, 16 service points, and five digs as the Lady Comets rallied for 25-18, 26-24, 15-7 wins in the final three games after dropping the first two 18-25 and 23-25 in the Wyoming Valley Conference match.

Lizzie Sheldon had 20 service points, Mel Golden had 28 assists, while Tessa Pollock had eight kills, seven digs, and 10 service points and Kara Collins added nine kills and five blocks.

Lorelai Paxton paced the Lady Tigers with 16 digs and 14 service points, while Emma Elias had 23 digs and Karen Whitaker had six kills. Emily Schultz added 13 digs, 12 service points, and 10 assists.

Crestwood 5, Hazleton Area 0 - The Lady Comets did not surrender a set in capturing the Wyoming Valley Conference victory over visiting Hazleton Area last Wednesday. Hannah Ziegler defeated Emily Prokopovich (6-2, 6-1) at first singles; Megan McLaughlin downed

Nanci Major (6-2, 6-0) at second singles; and Shannon Griffiths was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Katy Harmonosky at No. 3 singles.

At first doubles, Olivia Richards and Sydney Bruno blanked Jenna Harmonosky and Ava Zions-Smith (6-0, 6-0). Sam Olszyk and Madison Van Gorden won their No. 2 doubles match against Michelle Zupcevich and Kaitlyn Marley (6-1, 6-2).

Dallas 4, Crestwood 1 - Last Thursday, Dallas’ Wally Flynn and Audrey DelGaudio had wins in singles and the Lady Mountaineers swept doubles to defeat Crestwood.
