WASB turns down WEA agreement

At a special meeting of the Weatherly Area School Board held Tuesday, October 19, and after a 40-minute executive session, the board voted 7-0 to turn down the proposed collective bargaining agreement with the Weatherly Education Association. Negotiations will resume. Asked during public comments as to the status of these negotiations, board member Brian O’Donnell explained that “We are not too far off,” with member Matt vonFrisch adding that “We look forward to getting this done.”

Action at the special meeting did approve the three-year contract with new superintendent Daniel Malloy. Malloy begins his duties as sole superintendent later this week. Theresa Young will take some earned time, with her official end of employment being October 27.

Teresa Hartz has resigned as junior high girls’ basketball coach.

At a meeting of the Weatherly Citizens Committee to Save the Schwab Portrait, a Weatherly Area High School Alumni Association was formed including election of officer. The first board are Tim Frable, president; Ed Young, vice president; Loretta Allison, recording secretary; Jack Koehler, treasurer; and Barry Gangwer, publicity and correspondence secretary. A bylaws committee was established. Initial membership is 203.

God’s Missionary Church will have a gospel singing service next Sunday, featuring the Praise Singers Quartet of Penn View Bible Institute. A hearty and warm welcome is extended to all.

White Haven Youth Basketball will hold its only registration day this Saturday in the White Haven Community Building. Registration is $10 per child, or $25 per family.

Coaches and referees are urgently needed.

This Saturday, the East Side Inn will feature Crying Sun from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

A Hallowe’en Party is next Saturday, with music by The Procrastinators, with prizes and surprises.

An awards banquet by the Citizens Fire Company to recognize their firefighter of the year will be October 26 at the social hall. Richie Molinaro and Mr Lou will provide music for dancing.

The Crestwood School District is seeking cafeteria and custodial substitutes.

Salary is $4.25 per hour.

The Crestwood Comets football team’s game versus the Dallas Mountaineers came down to a goal-line stand by Dallas in the last minute. The Mountaineers held off the Comets for a 22 to 14 win. The loss drops Crestwood to 5-2.

Both teams are now 2-2 in Division II. Weatherly/Beaver/Banks Raiders lost 14-6 at Panther Valley. The Raiders’ Pee-Wee team tied their PV opponents 12-12. This Sunday, the Junior Whippets come to Weatherly.

At the Fern Hotel, weekend specials included Veal Irene for $9.50 and beef tips over noodles for $7.25.

DAVID BRYAN FISHER David Bryan Fisher, 42 years of age, of Weatherly passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at home.

Born Friday, June 22, 1979 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Barry, and Mindy (Weinberg) Fisher.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 8 years, Tabitha (Miller) Fisher; son, whom he adored, Tyler R. Fisher of Philadelphia; brother, Lawrence H. Fisher, Esquire of Jamestown, PA; sister, Cheryl Yardley, wife of Scott of Levittown, PA; many nieces and nephews.

Seth’s Sightings For going on 30 years, Ruth and I have been involved in the Weatherly Area Community Library. Early on we started with the group of library founding volunteers, holding an auction to raise the money needed to support the little library. That event in some form has been held since the 1990s, and this past weekend was 2021’s event — a basket raffle.

Ruth is still on the library board, and so was involved with the event. I was drafted as an extra set of hands.

The event went for two days, Friday and Saturday. It was another success, turning out volunteers and supporters while raising much-needed money to pay for things like heat this winter, electricity and internet, as well as book acquisitions.

Every year I forget just how much walking on a hard surface is involved. My knees gave me a lecture both days.

We were free by mid-afternoon on Saturday, taking the last items back to the library.

ahead of our big event Saturday night, the opening game of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey season. I took some of that to do a quick bit of lawn mowing, since rain was expected later and into Sunday. Then we drove the familiar path to the arena, and settled in for a good contest.

Our Penguins gave us a good show, and with our goalie stopping most everything sent his way, we beat the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 2-1.

Sunday’s game was a loss to a very good Charlotte team.

We’ll be back on the 27th to cheer out locals for another match versus the Phantoms.

This Friday, Ruth and I have bought tickets to the US Women’s Hockey Team vs Team Canada at the PPL Center in Allentown. The teams are on a barnstorming tour, raising money and awareness ahead of the winter Olympics.

We plan to make a day of it.

In other sightings, we are seeing geese setting up in vees, but not quite flying south yet. Perhaps this week’s nights in the high 30s might send more off.

White Haven’s Halloween parade got lucky with the weather.

It wrapped up just ahead of the first rain on Sunday. Next will be Weatherly’s parade on Hallowe’en weekend.

Veterans from White Haven’s VFW Post held their homeless veterans encampment this past weekend. They had a tough night on Saturday, rainy and cold. The event raises awareness and collects clothing and money to help area homeless.

I had expected Penn State football for this weekend, but I learned this was their off week from friends who are Penn State fans. Thanks to hockey, I was fine without the Nittany Lions, but I expected a win and projected that onto the Patriots. That wasn’t such a good idea, as the Patriots found a way to lose. After leading well into the fourth quarter they allowed a tying field goal, and then allowed the Cowboys to score a touchdown in overtime.

I still expect a Penn State win this week, and likely the same result as this week for both the Eagles and Patriots.

For the win I’ll root for Tampa Bay and the G.O.A.T. The Eagles traded away a favorite player of mine, Zach

Ertz. He played in Thursday’s game, even catching a touchdown, knowing that he was to be traded on Friday. I hope he does well in Arizona for a few more years.

The Purdue Boilermakers went into Iowa and beat them on their own field. Way to go, Purdue, BIG10 football at its best.

I’m keeping a light listen on the baseball playoffs. I’d like the Red Sox to beat the Astros — which they did nicely on Monday night. I’ll keep following if the Red Sox win.

Ruth is our daylight guru.

She is keeping time now, then noting when it will be dark in November. I’ll take warmer weather — dark or not.

Warmer weather keeps the furnace off. I am angry about the rising gasoline prices (will we see $4 a gallon?), and fuel oil prices.

Cranberry Quilt Guild is active this autumn As we look out our window, we see the seasons changing. A beautiful array of colors lies ahead, similar to the monthly meetings of the Cranberry Quilt Guild. Every month we are treated to new styles, colors, and fabrics, all of which are presented by members and program speakers. The Covid Challenge quilt reveal displayed astounding scrap combinations to the delight of the members. Twenty-one members participated and the creations were awesome. Project chair Judy Lutz thanked all who were able to take part in the challenge keeping the group on par through the long months of isolation.

The long-awaited quilt show, postponed by the pandemic, is being planned for September 17 & 18, 2022.

Members were reminded to begin their projects to display. Quilts of all sizes from King to mini will be shared for the public’s enjoyment. Theme quilts such as Quilts of Valor, T-shirt quilts and vivid wall hangings also have been popular at past shows. The raffle quilt, ‘Atmospheric’ a modern style beautifully designed queen size, is being raffled benefiting the guild’s many projects. Tickets are still available and can be obtained from any guild member.

The upcoming October meeting will feature hints, tricks, and tips from members. Each member was invited to share, bringing examples if needed, of helpful methods they have found during their quilting projects. This promises to be timely as the quilting season begins full speed ahead.

The Guild announced that 20 Quilts of Valor have been awarded through the group. Presentations are going well and are scheduled as quilts are finished. Quilts take months to construct, and demand has been increasing. Cranberry members make quilt tops and entire quilts to be awarded

Memories of “Johnny Football”

Johnny Manziel, AKA “Johnny Football,” is a name etched in football lore. It’s just that some of it is for the wrong reasons. A star quarterback in high school, college teams came looking.

But one he hoped would offer a tender did not.

Too small to play, the Longhorns concluded, and Manziel had to look elsewhere. And he didn’t have to look far.

It’s only about 100 miles from Austin to College Station, and Texas A&M is where Johnny played his college ball.

He started right off the bat there, throwing for nearly four thousand yards his freshman year, named the SEC freshman Player of the Year. He would end his two-year Aggie career by passing for almost eight thousand yards, completing nearly 70% of his passes, and winning the coveted Heisman Trophy. But Johnny’s fame wasn’t just connected to what he did on the field.

It was also very much about how he handled himself–on-the-field and -off. He had style, brash and bold, and it was almost as though football was experiencing the second coming of “Broadway Joe” Nameth.

Manziel won a lot in college (10-2 as a fresh-

man, including a big win against ‘Bama), but he also liked to have a good time and soon became known as “a party guy.”

There have been a lot of players like that over the years (Paul Hornung comes to mind), but Hornung and others made it in the NFL because they were able to focus on the business at hand. Manziel either could not or choose not.

The bright lights got to Manziel soon after he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. It didn’t take long for videotapes to surface showing Johnny clubbing, drinking, and doing drugs. It was a shame, too. After bouncing around the NFL, Canadian Football League, and other pro football ventures, Johnny left the game behind. This one-time star and a much-heralded player could not manage personal demons sufficiently to sustain a pro career.

“Johnny Football,” they once called him. He was the rage, an icon, and even a role model.

DeMarzo, Lady Comets run to perfect finish

Crestwood’s Molly DeMarzo completed her fourth straight unbeaten season in the Wyoming Valley Conference last week, winning her final regular-season cross country meet.

The Crestwood cross country team sure is going to miss Molly DeMarzo. The rest of the Wyoming Valley Conference: Not so much. The senior runner completed her fourth straight undefeated season in dual meet competition last week in Sugarloaf Twp., leading the Lady Comets to wins over Holy Redeemer (17-39), Hanover Area (15-50) and Nanticoke (15-50).

With the victories, Crestwood ended the season as the WVC champion and the only unbeaten team at 13-0. It was a perfect ending for the Lady Comets and their star runner.

DeMarzo completed her WVC dual meet career in style, using a strong final kick to outlast teammates Ella Novelli and Maggie Kozich to

the line for yet another win.

Her winning time of 19:33 was 10 seconds faster than Novelli, while Kozich was third in 19:50. Hazleton Area’s Jillian Wolk was fourth in 20:40, and Holy Redeemer’s Lexi Marcinkowski fifth in 21:10.

“I credit my support system of my parents, teammates and coaches,” DeMarzo said afterward, holding a bouquet of roses given to her by her young cousin. “They (coaches) helped keep me calm. It is good to have a little pressure but they kept me prepared.

“We knew Jillian (Wolk) and the Redeemer girls would be tough, but we also knew not to get stressed. It’s a long race and we just run and push each other.”

“It’s awesome,” Crestwood coach Rob Moulton said of DeMarzo’s accomplishment.

“You have athletes that peak at certain points, but she’s kept it (going) through four years. ... There’s a lot that goes into it, but she’s worked hard to get there.”

As important as DeMarzo’s mark has meant to her individually has been her impact on her teammates and the entire Comets’ cross country program, Moulton said. “It’s really been great to see her grow running-wise, but even more so as a leader. That’s what we’ve tried to get her to focus on. You often see the top runners on the team focus on themselves; they don’t care about the rest of the team. But she’s taken on that (leadership) role. You’ve seen how much better we’ve gotten and how our program has grown.

She’s a huge part of that.”

Holy Redeemer’s Tommy Brady (17:07) edged Crestwood’s Nash Greene (17:10) for first place, but the Comets had enough depth to beat the Royals (25-30) and Hanover Area (15-50) in a WVC cluster meet also including Hazleton Area at MMI at Valley-Elementary Middle School. With the win, the Comets secured a share of the WVC championship, finishing tied with Lake-Lehman at 12-1. Dallas closed at 9-1.

Here’s how it works

Weston Medvetz (third, 17:31) and Jack Scanlan (fifth, 17:53) added top-five finishes for Crestwood. The Comets’ James Modrovsky placed eighth in 18:22, and Ryan Kozich was 10th in 18:45.

Aiden McDonald and Grant Smith placed sixth and seventh, respectively, for Holy Redeemer. MMI’s Woobie Kupsky came in fourth place in 17:44.

For the Cougars, who split with Redeemer and Hanover Area, Nick Hebel led the way in 12th place in 19:06.

After getting manhandled

by Crestwood in last year’s District 2 Class 4A championship game, Dallas got a little revenge on the Comets last Friday night in the Back Mountain. Parker Bolesta rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns, and freshman teammate Dylan Geskey added two more rushing touchdowns as the Mountaineers steamrolled to a 41-14 victory at Mountaineer Stadium.

Bolesta registered two first-quarter touchdowns, each capping 80-yard scoring drives that helped set the tone for the night. Dallas quarterback Jackson Wydra complemented the run game perfectly, completing 10-of-15 passes for 117 yards, and eclipsing 1,000 yards on the season.

And he also showed his

running ability. His 41-yard touchdown run in the second quarter came on a fourth-andone play, where Wydra broke free and reached the end zone.

Geskey scored on a 62-yard run in the third quarter and added a 2-yard run in the fourth. He backed Bolesta with 96 yards on 12 carries.

The Mounts (5-2) ended with 358 yards on the ground and 475 yards of total offense.

The Comets were able to move the ball, but didn’t find the end zone until the fourth quarter when Noah Schultz scored on a 77-yard run and Brendan Dennis caught a 34yard touchdown pass from Jay Swank. Schultz finished with 152 yards on 16 carries.

Crestwood (2-6) returns to action this Friday at Pittston Area.

Brynn Newborn gave the visiting Lady Cougars an early lead with the game’s first goal at 8:09 of the opening period.

Crestwood tied it just 12 seconds later when Ava McConnell scored unassisted. The score remained that way until Ambosie’s fourth-period heroics as the Lady Comets ended a two-game slide against Hazleton Area.

Crestwood enjoyed a 1912 shots-on-goal advantage, while the penalty corners were even at six.

Crestwood goalie Isabella Caporuscio made 10 saves, including a diving stop of a first-period scoring chance by Hazleton Area. Kylah Kelly added a defensive save. Elaina Ashman was in goal for Hazleton Area, stopping 16 shots.

Redeemer’s Lauren Kane had the only goal in the first three periods, before Crestwood came back behind goals by Aubrey Macri, Emma George and Emma Guydish.

The Royals’ Marissa Miller made 26 stops.

Girls’ Soccer Crestwood 4, Pittston Area 0 - On Senior Night at Crestwood Thursday, the Lady Comets rode Kennedie Huber’s two second-half goals to a shutout victory over the Patriots. Jess Niznik and Rachel Stover added unassisted goals for Crestwood, while Maddie Jolie and Emma Sheloski assisted on Huber’s scores.

The trio of Mia Pollack, Amira Pirrone and Naviah Labar were in goal for Crestwood, combining for 11 saves en route to the shutout. The Lady Comets dominated the stats, including shots on goal (25-8) and corner kicks (6-4).

Selinsgrove 2 - Emma Sheloski registered a hat trick, and teammates Maria Smith, Emma Suhoski and Kennedie Huber also scored goals as the Lady Comets overpowered Selinsgrove on Monday. Ella Magee scored both Selinsgrove goals.

Selinsgrove had the upper hand in shots on goal (1814) and corner kicks (7-4), but Crestwood’s defense had the answer. Goalkeepers Mia Pollack, Amira Pirrone and Naviah Labar combined for 15 saves.

Girls’ Tennis Two Crestwood players participated Monday in the opening day of the District 2 Individual Girls’ Tennis Championships at Kirby Park.

In Class 3A, Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler and Megan McLaughlin each posted first-round wins before falling in the quarterfinals. Ziegler defeated Valley West’s Brescia Bocchiaro 6-3, 6-2, before dropping a 6-4, 6-4 verdict to Wallenpaupack’s Erika Badner in the quarters. McLaughlin was a 6-0, 6-0 first-round winner over Sarah Langan before top-seeded Bella Peters eliminated her 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Wrecker runners complete second straight unbeaten season

by Steve Stallone Sports Editor They may represent the smallest school in the league, but the Weatherly boys’ cross country team continues to play king-of-the-hill in the Schuylkill League. Last Wednesday, the Wreckers wrapped up their second consecutive Division II championship and second straight undefeated season, running past North Schuylkill (31-35), Tri-Valley (20-35) and Pine Grove (17-42) en route to yet another sweep this season.

Junior Jacob Parker led a 2-3-4 Wrecker finish and established a new school record with his 17:52 run on the 3.1-mile course. Teammates Frankie Willis (18:51) and Michael Berger (19:19) were the next across the line in third and fourth, respectively. Ricky Ray’s sixth-place run in 20:34, and Timothy Maguschak’s (21:32) 13th-place finish secured the sweep as the Wreckers finished a perfect 18-0 for the season, 14-0 in Division II. “For our senior guys now, to win three out of the last four division championships and end your career on a 35-meet win streak is something to be proud of,” beamed Weatherly Area head coach Ryan Kately. “We were lucky to have this group come through and definitely very proud of them. They left their mark on Weatherly Cross Country for sure.”

other,” he said. “It’s been such a crazy experience, from barely knowing each other when we first got here, and then blossoming into what you can basically say is a brotherhood.

It’s a fun day every practice, no matter how hard it is.”

“A lot of hard work,” Parker said when asked about the ingredients to the Wreckers’ success. “It started very early in the summer, about June, and we put a lot of work in, a lot of miles. It’s starting to pay off now.”

About the only thing that didn’t go the Wreckers’ way was the medalist spot, which went to North Schuylkill’s Justin Williams. Williams set a new course record of 17:37, and held off Parker to the finish line in their first headto-head meeting. “Just to run with him was unbelievable,” Parker said. “It was about a mile-and-a-half when he started to pull away from me. I was a little disappointed with that, but overall it was a good race.

I got the school record and I

was two seconds under the old course record, so it was a good race for both of us. I’m really happy with it.”

Parker’s 17:52 broke Scotty Zoscin’s school record of 18 minutes, and also would have bettered the course record previously held by Mahanoy Area’s Cole Streisel (17:54).

“Jacob was our hardest worker this summer, him and Ricky,” Kately said. “He’s been our leader the whole year. All of hard work paid off, and I’m definitely proud of him.

“It was a hard track season for him and I think it motivated him to come out and perform better this fall in cross country.”

Zoscin, who was the Wreckers’ main gun before graduating earlier this year and taking his talents to East Stroudsburg University, remained a source of motivation for the team this season. “It was hard to deal with Scotty graduating, but honestly what he left behind was the hard work ethic that he left with us that

he drilled into us every day,” Willis said. “He left behind a winning ethic that we have today.”

Without Zoscin in the lineup, there were those who thought the Wreckers wouldn’t be able to defend their title, much less go undefeated again this fall. Except those closest to the program, that is. “It was definitely challenging to lose a guy like Scotty,” Kately said. “It kind of put some doubt in other people’s minds, but we never doubted ourselves this year. I think the lessons they’ve learned from Scotty to get out, train during the summer, hit home.

“Scotty left his hard work to these guys. They wanted to train more, so I think we proved a lot of doubters wrong today.”

Also on Wednesday, Tri-Valley defeated both Pine Grove and North Schuylkill in their head-to-head meetings, with Caden Leonard’s seventh place leading a pack of five Bulldogs to the finish in places 7-11.

As the Wreckers headed off to their fire truck escort through town Wednesday, they also had their minds on what’s ahead. They will defend their Schuylkill League title at the league’s annual meet this Wednesday, before defending their District 11 Class A crown next week.

“We know the schools that are going to be tough to beat at the top with us, but we’re excited to run with them,” Kately said.

GIRLS Ryley Schwalm clocked a 20:47, Katie McCormick followed in 21:03, and the 1-2 finish led the Division I co-leading North Schuylkill girls (13-1) in their showdown with Division II frontrunner Tri-Valley. They beat the Bulldogs 20-37 as well as Weatherly (18-37) and Pine Grove (15-40), and will share the Division I championship with Blue Mountain, also 13-1.

Samantha Masser was third overall for Tri-Valley, followed

by Kailey Roberts of North Schuylkil and Paige Mitchell of Tri-Valley.

Weatherly Area’s Danielle Gordon and Kendall Gerhart were sixth and eighth, respectively, as the Lady Wreckers defeated Pine Grove (18-37).

Gordon’s time was 23:58, and Gerhart’s 25:06.
