PennDOT questions raised at East Side by Ruth Isenberg

PRIZES GALORE went to Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company for their appearance at the 142nd State Convention held last month in Limerick. Shown with some of the trophies are, in front, Dylan Bellas and Cayden Bellas; and in back Nick Lilick, holding the trophy for the Best Appearing Engine, 2005-2008, Emma Bruder and Karl Bruder, and Nathan Farley, holding the trophy for the Best Appearing Float or Trailer. According to Fire Chief Bruce Berger, this was the first time the department marched and entered the competition on its own. He credited the decision to hire the Colonial Musketeers Junior Fife & Drum Corps to accompany them as part of the reason they did so well in the competition. He also noted that the junior firefighters in particular worked hard for 2 to 3 months, not only to get the apparatus and uniforms ready, but also to raise the money needed to compete.

Concern about Interstate 80 bridge construction and tolling and the effect it will have on East Side Borough was an issue for discussion at the October 7 borough council meeting. Eric Siglin, who is serving on the comittee to address the issue, said he plans to write a letter of comment in response to the advertisement in The Journal-Herald, and wants to find out when PennDOT is going to have more public meetings. Council member Liz Berger, also a committee member, said the PA Camground Association is also weighing in on PennDOT’s plans to toll bridges across the state. Their position is that boroughs are responsible for their own storm water; in townships, PennDOT is. Solicitor Jim Nanovic disagrees with their interpretation, and reads it that they are responsible. Marotta feels that PennDOT is responsible for damage to Route 940, because it is designated as the alternative route

to Interstate 80. Atty. Nanovic will send a letter outlining the borough’s position. Council accepted the revised plans for the Marotta-Berger minor subdivision, as approved by the East Side and Carbon County Planning Commissions. The plan was approved on a vote of 3 yes (Rudy Schoch, Helen Jones and Sharon Mrozinski), and 2 abstaining (John Marotta and Liz Berger). Street committee chair Schoch said he cut the grass twice, and took debris out of the creek, including rocks washed in by pipes. He cleaned the drain and shoveled the ditch out at the end of Vine Street, and cut brush around the Stop sign. Marotta said he wants to meet with DEP, and open the road at the end of Washington Street back up again. Secretary/treasurer Carol Lenahan submitted an application for emergency funds if the governor declares Carbon County a disaster area as a result of August’s tropical storms. Lenahan also reported that the PennDOT auditor recSee EAST SIDE, page 5
