Curative amendment adopted by Kidder Township Supervisors

Seth & Ruth Isenberg

At a special meeting on September 12, the Kidder Board of Supervisors passed the warehouse curative amendment into the township ordinances. The vote was 4-1, with Bruce Berger opposed. Voting in favor were chairman Ray Gluck, Wilson Klotzman, Noel Torres and Louis Pantages. While the changes apply only to any new warehouse, representatives of LOVE Kidder Township praised the decision, seeing it as a step toward gaining control of the warehouses that are proliferating in the area. Chief spokesman Beth Hurley has been taking the message

on the road, appearing at the Department of Environmental Resources hearing at Jim Thorpe High School on August 29. About 70 people attended to request rejection of the stormwater permit for the possible third truck terminal in Kidder Township.

Over 20 people spoke, including many LOVE Kidder Township and SAVE Carbon County members, attorneys from PennFuture, environmentalists from surrounding townships. Blue Ridge represntatives did not speak, but reserved the right to file written responses.

In the weeks to come, DEP will review and respond to

A note about this combo edition

This issue combines news from two publications The Journal of the Pocono Plateau, and The Journal of Penn-Kidder. Co-publisher Seth Isenberg has been in the hospital, and in order to keep the presses rolling, as co-publisher I made a decision to print items I felt would be of general interest.

Seth is recuperating nicely, but we don’t have a timeline yet for full recovery. We’d be interested in hearing your reaction to this combined format, as well as any suggestions. Please send e-mails to journalruth@ gmail.com

the numerous comments they received and will consider any changes needed to the Draft stormwater permit currently issued for the truck terminal.

Hurley also attended the Tobyhanna Township Board of Supervisors meeting on September 16, noting that this is a regional situation, and working together is one way to limit the facilities. Also passed at the special Kidder session on the 12th was approval of an application for an LSA grant (local share account under the PA Gaming grant program) for the Albrightsville Fire Company, in the amount of $461,726. Among the items to be funded are 20 portable radios, and 5 dual band 2-way radios to communicate with both Carbon and Monroe County Comm Centers.

Tom and Xian Hutton from Hutton Metalcrafts on Rt. 940 crafted the lamps and 6 donors contributed to the cost. Scott’s Signs in Mt. Pocono prepared memorial plaques, including one to dedicate the patio to the Hughes Foundation. JMJ Home Services in Stroudsburg painted the existing portico and exterior light stands. Hartmann Electric provided the installation and refreshing of exterior lights.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful welcomes new affiliate, Keep Monroe County Beautiful

Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority Supports Affiliate

Keep Monroe County Beautiful has officially become a county affiliate of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. The affiliate will be housed within and operate as a program of the Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority.

To achieve this milestone, Keep Monroe County Beautiful successfully completed Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s comprehensive Community Assessment. This vital process gathered crucial data across six key areas: residents’ attitudes towards litter and community image, existing litter prevention programs, community and beautification leaders, current waste and recycling policies, past and ongoing community revitalization efforts, and active

volunteer groups. The insights gained will be instrumental in shaping a local plan aimed at transforming attitudes and behaviors around litter, recycling, beautification, and related issues.

With this initiative, the Waste Authority has established the Litter & Solid Waste Advisory Committee. This committee will leverage local resources and leadership to implement programs and activities efficiently and cost-effectively. By aligning with the overarching goals and objectives of the organization, the committee will translate these into actionable programs that address the specific needs and priorities of the community.

The Waste Authority works

closely with public, private and civic partners to support litter prevention and abatement through infrastructure, educational programs and community cleanups. Beautification and greening efforts through partnerships with township parks, Monroe County Conservation District, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau and various watershed associations, land trusts and environmental councils will be further enhanced.

“Every day we make choices that impact future generations. Let’s choose to be the best stewards of the Earth by adopting eco-friendly lifestyles while making sustainable choices. Reducing, reusing and recycling waste will

help minimize harm to our environment,” said Mike Stettler, Executive Director of the Waste Authority.

The group’s strategic plan for the next three years focuses on enlisting individuals to be stewards of the environment, utilizing education and awareness as the first step to encouraging positive

Interfaith Stop the Hate Vigil scheduled

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, faith communities of different denominations from around the Pocono Plateau are invited to participate in our annual Stop the Hate Vigil, sponsored by the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Social Concerns Committee, in collaboration with our interfaith community. Individuals, families, and groups are encouraged to attend this free event.

Art MinissA  PAinting

Stop the Hate Vigils began appearing throughout the United States after the 1998 death of Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten, tortured, and left to die near Laramie, WY. Since that time, annual vigils continue to honor the memories of victims of hate-related crimes, to encourage participants to speak out when others are attacked due to their race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, gender, or economic status, and to inspire individuals and communities to act nonviolently as agents of healing in our community. The vigil will include selections of the wisdom from our varied traditions, inspirational music, prayer for

the victims of hate violence, and an opportunity to recommit ourselves to stand together against hate violence by fostering justice and peace through respectful attitudes and behavior, education, and civil dialogue.

St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish is located at 5112 Pocono Crest Road, Pocono Pines. For more information about the Stop the Hate Vigil, contact Lynnette Smith at (570) 242-6165 or at tomlyn65@ptd.net.

Out in the Open Oh deer,

it’s that time again!

Pocono whitetail deer buck’s antlers are soft and fuzzy. But not for long. If you’re the woodsy type you’ll notice saplings to medium-sized tree trunks have the bark removed. That most likely is due to a male deer trying to get rid of the flakey stuff on his rack we all call velvet.

A few days after a buck loses his antlers in late winter, he begins to grow new ones. Usually larger than his past years. The new ones could grow as much as half-an-inch a day because the velvety flesh covering the soft inner bone is full of blood vessels that pump nutrients to the antlers promoting fast growth. Antlers are the fastest growing tissue known among mammals. That’s the reason researchers studying cancer in humans are so interested in the antler growing process.

The loss of velvet and the hardening of the antlers coincides with the annual fall/ winter mating season called the rut. Deer fight for the right

This one-antler buck probably collided with a vehicle. While the antler will not grow back until next year, it is obviously not interfering with his appetite.

to mate with does. One deer may mate with many does and a female may mate with many bucks. It is possible that twins of the same mother each have a different father.

The regenerating crowns elk, moose, caribou and deer wear are antlers not horns. Antlers fall off every year and grow back the next. Horns, as on cows are dead Keratan tissue that never falls off and just continues to grow. If a cow loses a horn, it does not grow back.

Many deer in the Poconos have deformed antlers. Usually, because of a collision with a vehicle or it’s accidentally damaged in some other way while his antlers are soft.

In conjunction with the mating season the hunting season soon begins in Pennsylvania. Because of the limited access to hunting and the larger deer populations in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and an area around Pittsburgh, a special archery deer season begins there on Saturday, September 21. Check the Hunting digest to find where these Wildlife Management Units (WMU) are located for this special season. The statewide archery deer season opens on October 5.

Garden of Giving still needs help

The rains of Summer were great for the vegetables; they produced a bumper crop. But Summer was not as kind to the volunteers; the unusually high temperatures kept many from helping to work the garden this year. Fortunately, enough hardy helpers pitched in to bring in a great harvest. The

Garden will continue to provide some produce through the Fall months, so volunteers will remain needed until the Garden closes for the season at the end of October. Then, the job of cleaning up and packing away will require some helpers. Even through the Winter, help will be needed inside the

office, with correspondence and organizing. Someone who could apply for financial Grants, to help keep the Garden running, would be incredibly helpful. Please contact the Garden office at 570-402-1282, or email GardenOfGiving1@gmail. com. The Garden depends on you.
