Don’t put those boots away yet

Techmically, spring begins on March 20. This year, we’ve had a mild winter, and some pretty balmy days even in February. But don’t put your boots and gloves away just yet.

Traditionally, our area gets at least one good storm in late March or early April. Even though the daffodils are already blooming, and the forsythia show their bright yellow blossoms, we’re liable to see a good coating of white sometime in here.

Not to worry, though. Sprng snows melt quickly, even the deep ones. Passing the vernal equinox means we’re seeing more daylight than darkness, and the earth’s angle brings us closer to the sun.

An early Easter means bare branches for egg hunts and trips to church, not the scenario we expect. But the signs of spring are everywhere, from the songbirds newly active to the grass almost ready to be mowed. Don’t plant those annuals yet, and keep those boots handy. But get ready, because when spring really hits, it’s going to be sweeping everything before it.

Talking With TJ (Part Two)

On a cold day in February, I sat down with Tom “TJ” Martino at his home in Lake Harmony. We spoke about his experiences at the lake from back in the day. Born in Coaldale, Pennsylvania in 1933, TJ started to venture out to Lake Harmony from his home in Jim Thorpe (formerly Mauch Chunk) when he was 16 or 17. For the past 55 years, he has had a place in Lake Harmony, where he currently lives. This article is Part Two of three.

MP: What can you tell us about the development of Lake Harmony?

TJ: Before my time, a fellow by the name of Amond Kibler owned much of this area here, and he in turn would sell parcels of land to individuals. He gave permission, in writing, to non-waterfront people the right to come over to certain areas, which were [designated as] paper streets and still are and were undeveloped, as they are today, to come down there, use that area.

MP: What would people do in those areas?

TJ: You would put your boat in. The boats at that time were rowboats and canoes hardly any motorboats, which came later in the 50s and 60s. It was a case of having a place for your rowboat or a place to put your canoe, and a place for you to access the lake. Where the [Lake Harmony Estates] marina is now, there is a loop of two streets. That was sort of an area where people over there would access the lake and come for picnics and sit for the afternoon and enjoy the outdoors, as was Lesher Street here on this side of the lake.

MP: What changes have you

seen over the years?

TJ: The development of and the building types that are going up far exceed what our

forefathers had dreamed of. Most of the [building] activity was pre-1940’s. That was preSee TALKING WITH TJ, page 8

World War II, and they were constructed with the materials that were available used materials, etc. Cabins did not have basements in them. They were on stilts. My mother, I have a picture of her in 1928, came out to Lake Harmony as a young girl before she was married, and five years before I was born. Our family goes back a long time here. I don’t know the specific one or two cabins that she came to, but some research would help me with that.

MP: Today we use the Internet, how would people like your mother arrange a cabin rental at Lake Harmony back then?

TJ: I know a fellow named Bret Carey owned the unit she came to on the South Lake, here, and he was from Jim Thorpe, so I assume. Because of the lack of communication that we had at that timeframe, in the 1930s telephones were not yet as prolific as they are today. You did not have a phone at all, unless you were a railroader, which her father was. So, making contact was a case of physically getting to the spot at the time that the owners of the cabins were there. But because she lived in Jim Thorpe, they managed to get it. I

don’t know for how long she was coming there, but I have that picture. It was just one of those things people did annually. You would make your reservation for the next year.

MP: I didn’t ask TJ about Peterson’s Ski & Cycle in Blakeslee because it did not exist back then. But if it had existed when TJ was a young man, I am sure he would have checked out all the cool stuff for sale like hoodies, souvenirs, skis and cycling equipment not to mention the great service! Don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. You’ll find PSC right next to Wawa or go online to www.petersonsskiandcycle.com Stop by and say hello. We hope to “ski” you soon!

Kidder meeting dominated by warehouse concerns, conditional approval

Another large crowd was on hand for the Kidder Township Board of Supervisors meeting on March 26. The crowd spilled out of the meeting room. Some were standing in the foyer.

To start the meeting, a special award presentation was made by Lake Harmony Fire Chief Ralph Lennon to the five Pocono Mountain Regional Police officers who, being first on the scene to a crash off Route 940 on February 26, had rescued a woman from her burning vehicle. Each was given a plaque. Challenge Coins were also presented from Kidder Township Police Chief Matthew Kuzma and Fire Chief Lennon. The honored officers were Officer CJ Dickenson, Officer Scott Dunlap, Sergeant Robert Miller, Officer Carmine Saprona and Officer Adam Bond.

The rescued woman is still recovering from her injuries. She had crashed in Kidder, just west of the Monroe County line. (See picture, page 10.)

The regular meeting started with all but one of the 11 public comments about Blue Ridge Real Estate’s plans for their second warehouse in the township. Many speakers presented arguments and research against the proposal, citing concerns over the environment, noise, light pollution, air pollution and crime. Questions were asked why the Supervisors were not following or enforcing the zoning ordinance.

Some speakers requested a new traffic study. They pointed out that last one was in 2019, and so much has changed in the township that a new study is warranted.

Other concerns were for water quality, stating that the plans do not adequately address storm water and run off. There was mention that Francis Walter Dam Road does not have the infrastructure to handle the offsite drainage.

Chief Lennon ended the public comments session, sharing that volunteers for the Fire Company are always needed.

In regular business, all supervisors were in favor of an extension to May 28 for Camptel Poconos (Maison Hotel LLC.).

Raylene Eckley again asked about using the Albrightsville School House to headquarter the township Historical Society. The issue was inadvertently left off the agenda, but board Chairman Raymond Gluck said they would get this on the agenda for next month.

Attorney Mike Malloy, representing Blue Ridge Real Estate (BRRE), made his presentation to the Board as to why they should grant conditional approval to their requested building project waivers. He referred to how much they have already done to meet township requirements and denied accusations from the public that BRRE would be turning the township into an industrial area.

Malloy claimed the public presents “red herrings” and “misinformation” in opposition to the project. He said there is no need for a new traffic study, and they have consulted with DEP and PennDOT. He dismissed public concerns over the cumulative environmental effects of the project. His argument concluded by saying BRRE has met all written requirements

and supervisors should approve the requested waivers according to their own rules.

Chairman Gluck noted several conditions have not been met, and requested BRRE notify the Board each time a condition is met. He also said the Planning Commission had already reviewed the plan, and supervisors will act based on the Planning Commission’s recommendation.

Supervisor Noel Torres addressed the audience concerns, saying he had looked into a great deal of information and ordinances and believed it would be an “injustice if we vote against it.” He felt a judge would rule against the township should supervisors deny it and the issue be argued in court. He assured that this approval does not give “carte blanche” for BRRE to move ahead with their plans, saying that all projects will be scrutinized, but at this juncture, the vote against conditional approval and then a court battle would not be a good use of taxpayer dollars.

Conditional approval for the BRRE warehouse project waivers was unanimous. It was noted several times that this is not a final approval and that there is a long way to go until that might occur.

Kidder Motor Carrier Inspections

The purpose of these inspections is not to inconvenience motor carriers entering or traveling through our township, but to reinforce safety requirements and make our PA and Kidder Township roadways safer for all who travel them. Several years ago, these inspections were performed by Chief Matthew Kuzma and Detective Neil Yurchak. The inspections were discontinued in 2005 and resumed in 2023.

Throughout Pennsylvania, more than 700 specially trained state and local officers inspect motor carriers for commercial safety regulations

At this time, Patrolman Jonathan Yaskiewicz is the only Kidder Police officer who is certified to do these inspections.

To be certified, Officer Yaskiewicz entered a Mentor program which was completed November 3, 2023. Prior to entering the program, he completed 120 hours of rigorous classroom training. A total of 32 Level 1 Inspections were required to complete the certification process. These inspections were observed by the Pennsylvania State Police and signed off on completion. Although there were no major issues reported, of the 20 inspections completed, 38 citations were issued.

It was with that in mind, that, on a gloomy and dreary 37 degree morning on March 28, I was permitted to observe a current motor carrier inspection. This was a Level 3 inspection which is a Driver Only Inspection. It included driver’s licensing, medical card, log book, vehicle registration and insurance as well as inspection of the co-driver if applicable. No part of the vehicle is inspected during a Level 3 inspection. The carrier this morning was a trash hauler. Busy on his computer, Officer Yaskiewicz was able to check

the status of his driver’s license, any possible infractions, especially drug or alcohol, in his name or the vehicle’s record. Gone are the days when drivers’ logs were paper and the officer had limited access to much of the information which is available to him/her today.

In today’s inspection, the driver and carrier met the requirements of a Level 3 inspection and was free to resume travel with a computer generated paper indicated he had met all requirements of a Level 3 inspection.

You may be asking, what additional inspections are required in Levels 1 and 2. Level 1: Full vehicle inspection, including tires,

Questions in your minds: What’s in it for the township? Most important is safety on our roadways. But yes, there is a financial benefit too. When a citation is issued, Kidder Township receives 50% of any income generated by the citation. It’s a Win/Win!

By the way, in approximately 30 inspections of trucks going to or from the local warehouse, there were no citations.

Western Pocono Trout Unlimited planning second annual Trout Festival

It’s early but plans are being made by Western Pocono Trout Unlimited and the White Haven Area Community Library and Visitor’s Center for the second annual White Haven Trout Festival to be held Saturday, June 1, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. sponsored by WPTU and WHACL .

Folks traveling in the Poconos may want to be aware so they can include the Trout Fest in their summer plans. Last year’s inaugural event was a wonderful day long program that highlighted the environmental, recreational, and cultural connections between the legendary trout fishery that is the Lehigh River (and many other Pocono waters) and the historic town of White Haven.

The day long event featured over two dozen conservation groups, trout fishing shops and guides, fly tyers, rod makers, crafters, and artists.

Before Catlin Clark and Angel Reese grabbed headlines, there was the Cavinder Twins

The 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is in full gear, with the Finals starting tomorrow, and it’s a good time to reflect on the years past. One of the most interesting stories involves the Cavinder twins, Haley and Hanna.

The twins made headlines when they posted videos on TikTok and Instagram during the COVID pandemic. Done to pass the time when face-to-face interactions were limited, the twins soon found that many folks were watching them millions it came to be over the years buoyed when Haley and Hanna led the Miami Hurricanes to the 2023 women’s NCAA Elite Eight. Haley was the leading scorer on the team, while sister Hanna was 2nd on the team in free throw percentage and 5th on the team in assists. The two had transferred to the East Coast school from Fresno State, where they had begun their college careers.

The twins evolved into basketball stars and social media celebrities, and Sports Illustrated reported that they were among the first student-athletes to sign major endorsement deals through NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness). That signing also included

an NCAA penalty for the Hurricanes (one year on probation) when it was learned that their head coach linked the twins with a local businessman she knew (NCAA coaches aren’t permitted to get involved in players’ financial transactions).

Playing at Miami ended Hanna’s college basketball career, but Haley had different plans. She decided to play her final year for the TCU Horned Frogs (even though she has yet to play in a game), and Hanna moved with her to Fort Worth, TX. Hanna told GQ that their bond “is stronger than being basketball players. We have to do life together.” That life includes being business partners. The twins run a clothing company called “Baseline Team.”

Women’s college basketball used to be a sport of interest primarily to hard core fans. Today, as an entertainment option of a national scale, the Cavinder twins symbolize that evolution.

Matthew Paris enjoys following and writing about athletes after their playing days are over. His work is published at The Sports Column.

Community Supported Agriculture membership makes a difference for local farm & families

Pocono Organics, one of North America’s largest Regenerative Organic Certified farms, recently shared Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) 2024 membership invitations across the area. While the participant $350 membership fee helps this local farm buy seeds and supplies for the coming season, it also adds not only nutritional value, but also savings to the equation.

STR Conference

Bill Faeth, a leading expert on operating successful vacation rental properties and delivering exceptional guest experiences. Faeth, who offers coaching services to property owners, emphasized the region’s untapped potential, stating, “You have a real gem here!” as he pointed out the window to Camelback’s ski slopes. He provided valuable insights into attracting guests to your property and

profitably scaling.

Additionally, the conference addressed crucial topics such as regulatory challenges and community impact, with insightful sessions led by industry experts. Matt Curtis, representing Smart City Policy Group, provided valuable insights into the implications of vacation rental regulations, while local officials engaged in productive discussions during the “Revisiting the Model Ordinance” session.

One of the most significant contingents at the conference was realtors, with over 125 in attendance, demonstrating the real estate industry’s stake in short-term rental developments. PMAR’s efforts to raise public awareness of short-term rental issues proved instrumental in bringing over 30 elected and appointed officials to the event, fostering meaningful dialogue between stakeholders.

Cindy Knecht, Poconos VRO board member and chair of PMAR’s Short-Term Rental Committee, expressed enthusiasm about the event’s success, stating, “The Poconos STR Conference provided a valuable platform for realtors to engage with industry stakeholders and gain insights into the evolving vacation rental landscape. Our efforts, supported by a National Association

of REALTORS® grant aimed at raising public awareness on this topic, facilitated a real dialogue between municipal elected and administrative positions, paving the way for collaborative solutions.”

Tourism is a big part of the Poconos economy, with 1 in every 5 jobs directly tied to serving visitors. Chris Barrett, President/CEO of the PMVB, emphasized the significant economic impact of short-term rentals on the region, noting that there are 11,000 hotel rooms in the 4-county region and roughly 6,800 licensed STRs. He further highlighted that the average visitor stays 1.5 days in a hotel and 3.4 days in a vacation rental, underscoring the key role of short-term rentals in the region’s continued prosperity.

In addition to realtors, individual owners also benefited from the conference’s educational offerings. Lindsey Rodriguez, owner of Stay Booked, a boutique property management company in the Poconos, hosted a jam-packed STR 101 session, providing invaluable insights for individual owners looking to navigate the vacation

rental market.

In summary, the inaugural Poconos STR Conference provided a platform for constructive dialogue, networking, and learning, reflecting a balanced approach to the needs of residents, owners, vendors, and industry professionals alike. The resounding success of the event underscores the partners’ commitment to fostering a thriving vacation rental industry in the Poconos, with plans already underway for a repeat event in the spring of 2025.

He is one of the founders of organized ski racing in the state, and a leader of the Pennsylvania Alpine Racing Association. Among his many accomplishments was developing a junior racing program at Jack Frost Ski Area. The alpine racing ski trail at Jack Frost, “Dematte’s Demise,” is named after him.

Soriano still selling in Lake Harmony

MaryAnn Soriano began her real estate career in 1978. In 2012, she celebrated 25 years in the real estate industry, working all those years with Pocono Resorts Realty. In 2024, she is still selling real estate, now with The Real Estate Group in Pocono Lake.

She stayed with Pocono Resorts Realty for 33 years, until it closed in 2020 and the owners moved to beautiful Naples, Florida. At that time, MaryAnn started working for the Terra Cottage Realty Group LLC. In 2023, the Broker there retired, and MaryAnn had to move again.

She is a full-time agent specializing in primary homeowners, second homeowners and investors. Soriano resides in White Haven, with her husband of 37 years. She fell in love with this area early in life, vacationing as a child in the beautiful Pocono Mountains.

Soriano has received many awards over the years including Outstanding Realtor and Top Salesperson. She says, “I will continue in the industry that I love,” ready to be of service to her previous clientele as their lives change, and to future clients, whether buyers, sellers, or shortterm-rental owners. Lake Harmony Rescue Squad report

The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad’s ’23-’24 fundraising campaign letters were mailed earlier this fall. People have been generous.

As of the end of February, the campaign has raised nearly $46,000.

Last year, the LHRS raised over $50,000. In 2024, we need to step up to over $60,000 because the LHRS is buying another 4-wheel drive ambulance, same specs as #1760. The new unit should arrive later this year if all goes well with the order and customizing. So, by late 2024, the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad will have the most modern fleet in the area.

In February, the units were out a total of 2,261 miles, making 39 calls in Lake Harmony, and one into Monroe County. The LHRS was also out 10 times with the fire companies on alarm calls.

The team that launched the modern era of Women’s College Basketball

Before Tennessee and UConn dominated the women’s college game, South Carolina became a power, and Caitlin Clark was born, a small Catholic college in Eastern Pennsylvania changed the landscape of women’s college basketball. I remember those days well, in awe of a school few people knew existed and what a coach without fulltime coaching experience accomplished.

It’s 1971 in East Whiteland Township, PA, population 7,200 back in the day, a rural area about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Immaculata College, run by the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is located there. Enrolling about 400 students then, athletics was an extracurricular activity designed to round out the higher educational experience. Still, the school played intercollegiate sports, and the president was in the market for a new basketball coach. Cathy Rush, a former collegiate player at nearby West Chester University and not long out of college, got the job. Just married, she was the spouse of NBA referee Ed Rush. It was Cathy Rush’s first full-time coaching job.

Soon after accepting the position for a salary of $450 a year, Rush learned that the team had no place to play. A fire had destroyed the school’s gym, and all games had to be played on the road until (and if) the arena was replaced. Rush rebuilt the team quickly, winning more games than it lost. But nobody could have imagined what would come next. Over the next five seasons, Immaculata won three consecutive national women’s championships and then finished twice as national runners-up. One of Rush’s teams was undefeated, another squad lost only one game, and Immaculata went 73-13 (85% win rate) over Rush’s final three years as head coach.

Along the way, Immaculata literally earned its

moniker “Mighty Macs” by knocking off major programs, including all of Philadelphia’s “Big Five” schools (Villanova, Temple, Penn, LaSalle, and St. Joseph’s) and a slew of prominent public universities, including Maryland, Indiana, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina State, Rutgers, and Penn State. The Mighty Macs played in the first-ever nationally televised women’s game (1975), beating Maryland by 32 points, and the team also played in the first women’s game at iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The on-court performance was flat-out spectacular, and the story surrounding it was even better. It’s the type of storyline from which Hollywood films are made, and that’s exactly what happened. The award-winning The Mighty Macs (2011) features Carla Gugino as Rush and Ellen Burstyn as Immaculata’s president.

Cathy Rush made the impossible happen at a place where athletic miracles don’t happen, refusing to accept the prevailing philosophy that dominated women’s college sports at the time— including strong beliefs about gender roles in society. Now ensconced in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Rush is at the head of an impressive women’s coaching tree that includes two former Big Ten women’s coaches, Rene Portland (Penn State) and Theresa Grentz (Illinois).

Rather than view this story as a historical artifact, it is as relevant today as it was five-plus decades ago. How so? It’s a story about the heart and soul of intercollegiate athletics that never goes out of style.

Daffodils, blossom and tulips jostle to the front of the stage in April. I love these early perennials: they may be more modest but they nearly all have that one special quality that a plant needs to transform your affections from admiration to affection - charm.
