Serious fun

There are so many great ways to entertain yourself here at The Lake. Hiking, biking, boating, swimming, fishing are all available right here.

Nearby are concerts, paintball, theatre, films and amusement parks. Dining out for breakfast, lunch and dinner can’t be beat, and let’s not forget the pleasures of sitting out on a deck or a porch, enjoying an adult beverage, or heck, any kind of beverage and just enjoying the scenery.

Memorial Day marks the beginning of the serious fun season of summer. From now until Labor Day, relaxing and recreating is the main order of business.

Have fun, but don’t forget that there is a serious side to summer as well. Safety is important, and sometimes forgotten in the moment. Put yourself at risk with risky behavior on land or on water, and you put other people at risk as well, including volunteer first responders.

And don’t forget the people who are working hard to make sure you are having fun. The meal servers and bartenders, the people working behind the scenes at every venue, are there for you.

Remember to treat them well.

KIDDER TOWNSHIP MEETINGS

Kidder Township Supervisor meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the township building, and unless otherwise noted, begin at 6:30 PM. Notices of special meetings are posted at the township building and advertised. Planning meetings are held the 1st Wednesday at 6 PM; Zoning meetings, the last Monday at 6 PM; EAC, the second Wednesday at 7 PM. The public is welcome. On the Road In mid-May, Ruth and I hosted extended familymembers Maddie and Campbell Killifer from Annapolis, Maryland, who made the three-anda-half hour drive to our area for a weekday stay ahead of mid-month. Once they had settled into their hotel room, they visited our office before we took them on a short tour. Our ride included driving over the Francis Walter Dam, and on the way into Lake Harmony, we sighted some of our area’s seemingly plentiful turkeys. There was also a bird I identified as a Baltimore Oriole, much to the amusement of our guests.

We dined at a window seat in Nick’s Lake House.

There, we were treated to good food, attentive service, and a enjoyed a beautiful sunset over Lake Harmony.

The next day, we met them for leisurely breakfast at the Terra Cottage. We sent them off well fed to explore Jim Thorpe. They loved the place, and timed their departure from there just ahead that afternoon’s heavy rain (and thunderstorms).

We really do have a beautiful area, and it’s especially beautiful at this time of year with the trees just coming into leaf, and plentiful flowing trees and plants.

Our friends had an excellent trip, ending in Cape May the following week. Lake Harmony is definitely on their map for a return visit. Ruth and I hope to see them return for foliage season this fall.

I’m going through chemotherapy to rid my body of a rare cancer. It’s made our work difficult, but Ruth and I are determined to put out the best LAKE NEWS edition that we can. The therapies are possibly going to go on through this summer, with a goal of being freed of the cancer cells. My first big milepost is in mid-June where I’ll get a full workup with my team of doctors in Philadelphia and Lehighton. Here’s to good news.

And, to all my fellow travelers on the health road, be strong.

Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary hosting pre-season celebration benefiting Family Promise The public is invited to a pre-season celebration, “Welcome the Butterflies Back” on Memorial Day weekend. The celebration starts Saturday, May 28, and concludes on Monday, May 30. The event runs from 11 a.m. to at 5 p.m. each day. No reservation are needed. This is a fundraiser for Family Promise of Carbon County, which provides services to homeless families within Carbon County.

There will be crafts for the kids, live butterflies, frogs, door prizes, butterfly hatching kits, and a pollinator attracting plant sale. Saturday and

Sunday, lunch will be available in the picnic area and CCEEC will be set up on site with live critters and hand-on educational exhibits.

Cycling Safety

by Mark Peterson Mountain biking is a fun activity and a great way to, as Manny Gordon* so eloquently put it, “enjoy, enjoy the great outdoors of northeastern Pennsylvania”. Even though it’s a simple pleasure to hop on a bike and take a ride in nature, there are some preparations and safety precautions that we at Peterson’s Ski and Cycle recommend for you.

Getting ready for the ride should start with wearing the right clothing for the conditions.

Working our way up from the bottom, you might want to consider wearing a pair of cycling shoes.

There are specific styles for various terrains such as road, gravel, mountain, etc. Proper bike shorts with padding to protect sensitive areas is a must and make for a more comfortable ride. When it comes to your top, you should choose breathable clothing that can wick away moisture, whether a dedicated bike jersey or a performance T-shirt.

Layering is key, giving you the option to add or remove clothing as necessary.

The most important element of your riding gear

is your helmet. You want to save that noggin in a fall, even if there isn’t a whole lot in it. Don’t forget to protect your eyes—sunglasses or other eyewear will do the trick. Yes, you’re lookin’ good! Finally, you will want to wear cycling gloves. You’ll have a much more comfortable feel on the handlebar grips when using gloves.

Cycling Safety Continued from page 10 are in good working order. It’s a good idea to have a portable tool kit with you— just in case you need to deal with mechanical issues on the trail. You should include tire levers, pump, spare innertube, and a patch kit to keep you rolling. For many riders, the issue is not if you are going to get a flat, but when.

Make sure you are well-hydrated and take water with you on your ride. (Beer doesn’t count until after the ride is over.)

A simple first-aid kit is also a good idea. This can include bug spray, band-Aids, alcohol wipes and sunscreen.

Charge your cellphone before hitting the trail, keeping in mind that cell service may not be available where you ride. Biking with a buddy or in a group is recommended.

However, if you decide to go into the forest alone, let others know where and when you are going, and what you are wearing in case you find yourself the subject of an episode on Lost in the Wild.

Cycling in the woods is awesome but be aware that there are some dangers out there as big as bears and as small as ticks. After the ride, check exposed areas of your skin for ticks (bears are easier to spot). The best way to observe wildlife

is from a distance.

And remember, take nothing but photos and leave nothing but tire tracks as you go through the forest.

Zoning change and solar farm hearings held

Kidder Township held hearings on May 12 regarding changing the zoning of a tract between Route 940 and Interstate 80 to commercial, and another on a proposed change in the zoning ordinance that sets rules on large solar power development. The hearings turned out a nearly full house.

Citizens were mostly opposed to the change of the Blue Ridge Real Estate (BRRE) property that would allow it to be developed for a commercial use. The roughly 300 acres of land stretches along Interstate 80 and experiences loud traffic noise. It abuts the new warehouse property on its west and Moseywood Road to the east. There are a lot of wetlands on the land. There is no proposed use at this time.

Ten citizens spoke, most questioning the need for the change. Many spoke about preserving the township’s natural resources and its way of life.

Hearing #2 was to have citizens voice comments on a change to the township’s zoning ordinance to regulate large scale solar electric generating projects. David Weightman of Cypress Creek Renewables, the company that is proposing a 60 megawatt project on an isolated tract in western Kidder Township, explained that his group has been doing studies of the site. “We’re still years away” from construction, and promised to host more community meetings. He notes that the township ordinance allows a solar farm as a permitted use on the site they hope to build on. He finished by explaining that the use is for 40 years, and then the site will be reforested.

The ordinance proposes to change use from permitted to conditional, to require a minimum of 500 acres for such a project, that the developer must put into place financial security to ensure the project can be decommissioned at the end of its use and the property restored, that a project

like this must have an electricity transmission line through it and be no more than two miles from a substation.

The same ten citizens spoke, nearly all opposed. Most objected to having the developer take all the trees, and contribute very little in taxes over the 40 years the solar panels would be in place.

Atty. Yurchak explained to the attendees Shelly Lutz defends area’s natural beauty that “no municipality can bar a use, but can strictly regulate solar power. You have to provide a location. This is the first step in a long, long road.”

Comments continued against the idea of the project (rather than the ordinance) before the hearing closed.

Both items were on the agenda for the township’s May 24 supervisors meeting.

Lake Harmony Post Office Notes

‘Bold’ future Bloomberg article notes USPS successes Under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, USPS is using trucks to transport more mail, a change that offers more cost-efficient, reliable service.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s efforts to modernize the Postal Service are the subject of a lengthy article in Bloomberg Businessweek.

The feature details the challenges facing USPS when DeJoy became the 75th postmaster general, in 2020, including the effects of COVID-19 on the organization’s 644,000-member workforce and the issues associated with the increase in mail-

in voting during that year’s elections.

As the March 31 article points out, though, DeJoy is helping the Postal Service get back on track through Delivering for America, the organization’s 10-year plan to improve its finances and service.

For example, the postmaster general tells Bloomberg Businessweek that USPS had relied too heavily on unreliable air transportation to fly mail across the country.

His solution: Shift some First-Class Mail back to trucks, which added a day or two of delivery time to some mail, but is allowing the Postal Service to provide more costefficient, predictable service.

Delivering for America is also targeting employee turnover, including converting as many as 63,000 pre-

career workers to full career status so they’ll stick around. Although this will be costly, DeJoy says, it will save money in the long run.

The piece also discusses the recent passage of the Postal Service Reform Act, along with the organization’s other efforts to move into the future.

“I take seriously the fact that we’re an independent agency,” DeJoy says. “I have a lot of authority, and I use it, right? And I’m getting us to be more bold.”

If they claim they can’t use PO Box, drop the PO and use BOX & #. I have done it to prove it can be done to hundreds of customer’s bills. I made copies of the envelopes, added the proper address and the zip plus 4, and sent them back and bam it’s fixed within the month! So when I hear it can’t be done I wonder if it was even attempted.

Code Enforcement

Kidder Township’s code enforcement officer Noel Torres reported 154 calls in April. Forty-one of those were for use of proper waste containers, 42 were for rubbish accumulating around properties, and two were about abandoned or unregistered vehicles. The were 37 ‘other’ violations, and those along with the ones for containers, rubbish and cars were all resolved.

Torres did 7 home inspections, and made 25 visits regarding tree preservation.

Lake News Archives From the June 2002 LAKE NEWS Lake Harmony Estates Property Owners Association was recognized as 2001 Outstanding Community Association of the year in the mid-size community category. A celebration was held at their spring meeting on May 26 with balloons and a cake.

The Nature Conservancy will dedicate the new Hauser Nature Center in Long Pond on June 15, 2002. A list of their nature walks and evening nature programs was published.

The front page of this issue has poster art from the 12th Annual Great Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine & Food Festival.

A history timeline is published in this issue, shows the Lake Harmony Volunteer Firemen’s Relief Association was formed on May 21, 1954. A month later, a Studebaker ambulance was purchased. In November, they bought an International Front-Mounted Pumper from the Richboro Fire Company.

The Lake Harmony Concerned Citizens (LHCC) will have their annual meeting on July 13. Volunteers were needed to do water sampling of the lake the next three months.

Last year, the LHCC received a Growing Greener Grant from the PA Dept. of Environmental

Protection to conduct a Lake and Watershed Assessment, designed to determine the condition of Lake Harmony in order to develop a plan to protect it. Data collected last summer suggests the lake is becoming eutropic.

A lake and watershed management plan is being developed by professionals from F. X. Browne, Inc. The Lettermen will perform on August 3 at Penn’s Peak (formerly Rambler’s Ranch) with all proceeds benefiting the Palmerton Hospital Foundation.

A photo in this issue shows the annual gathering of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. The event took place at Mauch Chunk Lake. The photos show six veterans, including Harry Klotz of Lake Harmony.

David E. Hayes, a former resident and police officer of Kidder Township, graduated on May 31 from the Baltimore Police Academy. There is a photo as Hayes also received the Police Commissioner’s Award of Excellence for his academic achievement and demonstration of his professional efforts. Family and friends from our area attended the ceremony.

A letter in this issue supports a Bottle Bill that would require no less than five cents per bottle, can or carton, redeemable at the seller. The idea is that this law would clean up our roadsides.

Fire Company reports

Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company was called out 48 times in April. The LHVFC responded to one building fire, one vehicle fire, one grass and brush fire, two fires in trash compactors, four vehicle accidents with injuries and a crash with no injuries, there were two extractions from vehicles after a crash, and a call to unauthorized burning There were 10 smoke detector activations (no fires), 7 EMS calls, plus another false call and two carbon monoxide detector activation with no CO present. Five calls were cancelled en route. There was one false alarm. There were calls to help remove someone from a stuck elevator, a search, a power line down, and two assists to other government agencies. Three calls were in Albrightsville, 3 on the Turnpike, 12 at the Mountain Laurel Resort, 3 at Split Rock, 3 at Snow Ridge, 3 on Route 940, 9 in Lake Harmony and 5 on Interstate 80.

Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company was called out 37 times in April, 21 as mutual aid with Lake Harmony VFC, 9 QRS quick medical assists, 2 calls onto the Turnpike, 2 responding to automatic alarms, a search for someone who’d gone missing near Boulder Field, an odor investigation, and a tree down across wires.

Lake Harmony Rescue Squad The two LHRS ambulances were out on 41 calls in April. 35 of those calls were in Lake Harmony, 3 into Monroe County, 2 into the White Haven area, and 1 into Penn Forest. The LHRS also turned out for nine fire calls.

The units were on the road a total of 2,538 miles.

Unit 1761 was down for much of the month, needing ball joints, new front tires and an alignment.

Kidder Police Report for April 2022 Kidder Township Police enjoyed another quiet month in April, responding to 127 calls for service.

Police ask that you call 9-1-1 for incidents like fireworks, and loud noise or music.

Among the calls on the list were 12 that were traffic related — plus two of abandoned vehicles; 9 medical emergencies, 9 suspicious persons, 9 for hazardous conditions, 8 service calls including a motorist assist, 7 burglar alarms — all false, 3 domestics plus 4 other fights/disputes, 5 disturbing the peace, 5 9-1-1 hang-ups, 4 motor vehicle accidents, 4 hazardous conditions, 3 vandalisms, 3 trespassing, 3 mental health incidents, 3 suspi-

cious persons, 3 fireworks complaints, 3 lost items and one missing juvenile.

Of the rest, there were 2 fires, 2 fire code violations, 2 ordinance violations and an abandoned vehicle; 2 parking problems, a traffic offense and a non-injury crash; a stray animal and an animal bite; 2 overdoses; a sex offense; a trespassing and a suspicious person; a building check and street light out to report. The department assisted other police agencies four times last month.

The department’s four vehicles patrolled a total of 3,795 miles in April. Two vehicles were in the shop during the month.

Kidder Supervisors approve zoning changes, North Lake Drive paving upgrade

by Seth Isenberg Kidder Township supervisors made quick work of their May agenda at their meeting on the 24th.

The change of zoning for the 300+ acre parcel along Route 940 (from the new warehouse to Moseywood Road) from residential to commercial was approved on a split vote, 3 to 2, with Tom Bradley, Bruce Berger and Ray Gluck in favor, and Louis Pantages and Wilson Klotzman opposed.

Supervisors were unanimous on approving the zoning ordinance change regarding large solar power generation projects.

Speed humps on North Lake Drive were added to the scope of the paving work that is now underway. A change order adding $103,424 to the contract adds more milling, the speed humps and the signs, marking and painting to inform drivers. Roadmaster Berger noted that the humps themselves only added about $10,000 to the change order. The timing of the completion of work for the project was extended to July 31.

A 1 Traffic Control of Douglasville was awarded the contract to paint traffic lines on all township roads, as well as crosswalk lines at major intersections.

Supervisors approved a contract to have the two sets of traffic signals on Route 940 at Moseywood

Road and at the Turnpike outfitted with signal emitters to allow the fire companies to change the traffic signals as they approach during an emergency response. The cost for the installation totals $30,118.

Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief Ralph Lennon reported that the LHVFC has been accredited to instruct EMTs and first aid instructors. Supervisors will set up a meeting with LHVFC representatives over their suggestions about run cards, with recommendations from the meeting then sent to along to Carbon County for their review.

Suburban Propane was approved as the new fuels supplier for the township, for diesel, gasoline and propane.

No bids were submitted for the township’s tree trimming work. This work was advertised three times last year and also received no bids.

Supervisors approved readvertising in the same publication (not this one or the Journals).

A resolution was unanimously approved to dispose of township records from various years, including duplicated tax rolls from 2012 to 2017, bank statements and payroll information from 2014, tax exoneration information from 2016, tax certifications, bills and paid receipts from 2019, See KIDDER SUPERVISORS, page 43

and a handful of other items and dates including old police inventories from 1987 through 2001.

In reports, manager Suzanne Brooks said: “There are a lot of visitors in the township,” asking residents to be more aware. She and police chief Matthew Kuzma encourage residents to call 9-1-1 about loud parties and disturbances. Kuzma added that the number complaints are beginning to rise as summer approaches.

The bills list totaling $186,797 was approved.

The biggest of the bills are for the monthly trash hauler, insurances and the like including payroll taxes, and the township engineer’s work, which together totaled $104,135. Emergency services towards the two fire companies and the Rescue Squad disbursed another $54,685.

The next supervisors meeting is Tuesday, June 21, at the township building beginning at 6:30.
