Grateful for Green by Ruth Isenberg Carbon County transitioned into the green phase of COVID-19 recovery this month — and it shows. There’s activity all around the Lake, and energy in the air, boats on the water and people everywhere. Our restaurants have made smart accomodations for outdoor dining, and are ready to welcome limited numbers of guests inside. Most are planning to continue take-out service as well, for those who aren’t yet comfortable going out. For some, including older people and people with health conditions and compromised immune systems, it may be a while before they want to risk exposure to crowds. It’s important to keep in mind that COVID-19 isn’t gone, isn’t cured, and can’t be prevented yet. Let’s all do our part to keep the vulnerable safe. Let’s also all do our part to help the volunteer organizations whose fundraising functions have been eliminated by the virus. Even in green, larger gatherings are discouraged, and our ambulance, fire company, library and trail group all depend on the funds they raise at public events. Please support the smaller events they are able hold this year, and if you can, send them a donation so they can continue to be here for you.

Kidder Twp. re-opens office by Seth Isenberg Kidder Township’s supervisors held a GoTo meeting on May 21, and glitches delayed the start until a quorum was rounded up. The meeting finally got underway with a mix of phone-ins and via the GoTo, with four supervisors, manager Suzanne Brooks, solicitor Casey Gillespie, police chief Matthew Kuzma, two citizens and this reporter. With the State Government shifting Carbon County into its yellow phase regarding COVID-19 restrictions, Kidder will reopen its municipal office to the public starting Tuesday, May 26. People coming into the building will need to wear masks. It was noted that the township will see more business activity, and that short-term rentals will again be allowed. A letter was shared by a group of Lake Harmony businesspeople, addressed to sewage service provider Aqua PA, asking for some kind of relief from a high increase in rates. Supervisors discussed this, and decided to send their own letter of support of these businesses’ request to Aqua PA — by unanimous vote. In business, police officer Ryan Kennedy has completed his probation period satisfactorily, and

is now a full time member of the department. The department reported 145 calls for the month of April, 59 of those were police services notifications. The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad reports making 24 calls in April. Two new people were hired for the crew. The LHRS thanks WalMart of Lehighton for another donation of personal protection supplies. Unit 1760 is getting service for an electrical problem. Supervisors authorized disposition of records per the township code of listed items between 2017 and 2012 such as old tax bills, exoneration lists and tax collector duplicates and general ledgers, as well as all electronic recordings of meetings once official written minutes are approved. The old Mt. Laurel Campground parcel was bought by a citizen from the county tax claim bureau by a Walnutport area resident, and is now returned to the tax rolls. Supervisors approved bills totaling $244,023. The biggest chunk of that is $142,842 for funds to the two fire companies, the Rescue Squad, and into the fire equipment fund. $26,920 was paid to County Waste for trash hauling; $18,429 for Highmark Blue Shield coverage for staff; $14,502 See KIDDER, page 7

Lake News, June 2020 —7

Kidder…

Continued from page 6 to ARRO for engineering services; $13,334 to the IRS; were the highest bills in the rest of the list. Roadmaster Bruce Berger reported that the township is waiting on a crew from Schiffer Bituminous to come clean out catch basins. The old dump truck was auctioned off at a price of $16,600 via Municibid.

A letter was received spelling out concerns of the Lake Harmony Association including about parking (due to big houses built on small lots), noise and fireworks, and trash being put out too soon — attracting bears. These items will be discussed at future meetings. The township’s declaration of emergency continues to be in effect as long as the state declaration holds. It is hoped that the June regular meeting will be in person again. The large hall at the Albrightsville Fire House was offered as a location so that there’s plenty of room for social distancing. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 18. Details on whether it’s in person and where, or online, will be posted on the township website.

On The Road Again? by Seth Isenberg

These weeks of being cooped up by the Commonwealth of PA had Lake Harmony looking empty at a time when we all would have been getting ready for summer. With the restaurants, resort and stores closed (or nearly so by the COVID-19 rules), locals and our shelteredin-place guests were getting more than a little stir-crazy. Good news came before Memorial Day when some of

the restrictions were lifted as Carbon County earned a yellow rating. Now in June, we can enjoy socially distanced dining and music, boating activities and more. Since mid-month, Lake Harmony has started to show its usual bustle and swagger. We are not back 100%, but there are now rules we can manage while keeping safe and alert about the virus. As for being on the road again — I think it’s almost time. Ruth and I would like to restart

our museum outings, once they open back up. What time on the road we did take was to look for the late spring wildflowers, rhododendron, and just recently, mountain laurel. Through late June and over the Independence Day weekend, explore Hickory Run State Park for the best mountain laurel show of blooms in this area. It’s an easy car ride on mostly paved roads, though the gravel road to the Boulder Field is an easy ride, but sometimes dusty. If taking a walk in the woods appeals, bring bug spray and spray down your pants, socks and shoes, then head onto the miles and miles of fine trails in the park. Ruth and I recommend the trails that take you along the edge of the Lehigh Gorge; or the Old Stagecoach Trail that explores rolling hills, high mountain streams and bogs. It’s best to get a trail map from the park office — which is brand new this summer with lots of parking. Our planned summer-full of events is looking more like a treasure hunt, seeking out the rare event that has survived the wave of cancellations. Off our events list are Briggs’ Blues Fest, County Fairs, Musikfest, Frontier Rodeo week, concerts at area wineries, and the Pocono Mountains Music Festival. Our one and only NASCAR weekend in nearby Long Pond gets held, just without spectators, so that’s a scratch, too. In July, what remains of the events includes a PowWow to be held July 18 and 19 in Drums — which is about a half hour west of The Lake. Knoebels amusement park has not announced their opening yet, but July is likely. We plan to enjoy See ON THE ROAD, page 12

some July evenings there when they do – it’s an hour and 10 minutes west on Interstate 80 to the Buckhorn exit, then south. For evenings, the Mauch Chunk Opera House has reopened, so check their website for music and comedy shows just down the road in downtown Jim Thorpe. Depending on the weather, we’d like to go to the Steamtown railroad museum in Scranton this summer when they reopen, though they’ve cancelled their train rides. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Lancaster County looks like a fun day trip, too, as we can schedule it. Also in that county, we’re still expecting the PA Renaissance Faire to take place starting weekends in August and running through October. With all of these, if the weather is hot, there’s little air conditioning at the sites, so pick your days wisely. I’ll try to find events that survived and start a list in July’s issue. September looks more promising, featuring the still scheduled Celtic Classic in Bethlehem late in the month. That same weekend, there’s the Willowbrook Rodeo. Both are just an hour away. So - welcome to summer everyone. Here’s to seeing you all out and about again – though when you have your masks on, don’t count on ready recognition. Keep well and stay positive.

At Hickory Run State Park.

Be a Fraud Fighter — Grant Scams Government grant scams are on the rise. Scammers lure targets through ads (newspaper, email, text messages, and even by hacking into your friends’ social media accounts), claiming you’re eligible for a $25,000 grant for a $1,200 fee. Know that government agencies do not hand out “free” money and most government grants go to insti-

tutions following lengthy applications. Never pay money to receive money. Native American Pow-Wow will welcome visitors

The public is welcome July 18-19 at an inter-tribal Native American Pow-Wow at Camp Rotawanis in Drums. Chief Littlewolf and the Tribal Council of the Wyoming Trail Council of Pennsylvania’s Native Americans issued the invitation, “as we attempt to step out of the heavy shadows of the Coronavirus Pandemic that has made us feel shutin for so long. As our Native American culture followers of both native and non-native peoples have been deprived by the cancellation of so many other events, we feel that it is time to come together once again in the spirit of our old ways. “Since many of us of the first nations are geographically separated by great distances, PowWow has always been a way for us to come together to visit with one another, share our cultures, not only with one another but also with the general public so they may better understand our ways as we strive to hold onto the old ways of our past, while we must live with one foot on each side of a

line that separates two very different ways of life. It is also a very spiritual time for us, as much prayer is involved in our dance, song, and drum. Many of the vendors who are set up at our Pow-Wow depend on the sale of their wares, as it is their only means of income, and as we mentioned, most PowWows for this summer have been cancelled. “We will, however, be making every attempt to practice all safety measures possible during this event, and we hope that you will also, and above all, afford the respect of those around you. “As we of Native American heritage are a very spiritual peoples, we will be looking to the Creator to bless us and keep all who attend safe. We hope that you will join us for these two days of festivities and activities. If you have any questions call the tribal office at 570-4278723, or email wyomingtrail@outlook.com.” Gates Open at 10 a.m. both days, with Grand Entry at noon. Admission is $6; children under 12 are free. There is free parking. Bring your lawn chair.

MARGE McALEER OBITUARY Margaret T. “Marge” McAleer (nee Tanner), age 69, of Lake Harmony, formerly of Hatfield, passed away on May 23, 2020. Born in Miami, FL she was the loving daughter of the late Otis and Ama Tanner (nee Chaistain). Marge retired after many decades in the banking industry and went on to enjoy her part-time job at Jack Frost Ski Resort. She was a passionate Rolling Stones fan and loved to dance to live music, especially at Nick’s Lakehouse in Lake Harmony, with her friends. Upon retirement, Marge enjoyed her time on the golf course with her husband, even achieving a hole in one at Split Rock Golf Club. Marge was a former Lake Harmony Rescue Squad Board Member. Those who knew Marge know she disliked being fussed over and would rather give than receive. Marge was the loving wife of 50 years to Joseph McAleer; beloved mother of Mendy Meriwether (Andrew) and Oliver McAleer; caring grandmother of Riley, Paige, Ella, and Nathan; devoted sister of Faye Pitman. She is also survived by her loving extended family and countless friends.

Resource for stopping spread of Spotted Lanternfly A printable checklist developed by Penn State Extension and the state Department of Agriculture can help citizens tick all the boxes when it comes to preventing the spread of the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect that is threatening the agricultural, timber and ornamental industries. The Spotted Lanternfly Checklist for Residents, now available on the extension website, contains a list of items that should be inspected before traveling or transporting them. These items include vehicles, recreational or camping items, outdoor furniture, building materials, and yard and garden items. “The arrival of summer and the lifting of shelter-in-place orders have people traveling across the commonwealth,” said Heather Leach, spotted lanternfly extension associate in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. “With that comes

the potential for travelers to unknowingly spread the spotted lanternfly to other regions. We need citizens to be aware of their role in preventing the insect’s spread, and this checklist is a great guideline to help.” See SPOTTED LANTERNFLY, page 35

container with rubbing alcohol. They also can be smashed or burned. Nymphs or adult spotted lanternflies can be destroyed using a fly swatter. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture State Plant Regulatory Official Dana D. Rhodes recommends having the compliance checklist on hand for use when traveling, most notably to and from the 26 counties in the state-imposed spotted lanternfly quarantine: Allegheny, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mifflin, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill and York. “Keeping a checklist in your car is a great reminder to look before you leave to keep from taking spotted lanternflies with you,” said Rhodes, who added that it is unlawful to move living stages of spotted lanternfly outside of the current quarantine zone. “The last thing you want to do as a traveler is transport this destructive pest to a new home.” To download the checklist, visit the Penn State Extension website at https://extension.psu.edu/ spotted-lanternfly and click on the box titled, “Quarantine Compliance for Residents.” Information on how to identify the spotted lanternfly, how to report an infestation and how to comply with quarantine regulations also can be found on the website. More information on how to reduce populations of spotted lanternfly is available at https:// extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly-management-for-homeowners.
