Making the most of these longest days

by Ruth Isenberg We’ve just passed the Summer Solstice, June 21, the official start of summer and the longest day of the year. On the eve of the solstice, Monday, June 20, Seth and I were driving home from Philadelphia. We’d stopped along the way for some shopping, and a meal at a Dominican restaurant south of Quakertown. It was after 8:30 until we got back on the road again.

We headed north on Route 309, driving into an absolutely gorgeous sky—medium blue, gradually darkening to navy, with long pink streaks, feathery clouds that ranged from pale dusty mauve to brilliant flamingo pink. The show lasted until well after 9:30, and traces of light accompanied us almost all the way home.

It reminded me to pay attention and appreciate the beauty around me. I’d brought my laptop computer along, and I could have, and maybe should have, been working on pages. Instead I chose to live in the moment, and savor these longest days. Let’s make the most of this summer.

KIDDER TOWNSHIP MEETINGS

Kidder Township Supervisor meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the township building, and unless otherwise noted, begin at 6:30 PM. Life Is a Beautiful Ride

Friends of Erika (Nusko) Spott learned of her hundred-mile bike ride through a recent Facebook post. Erika and I have known each other since our Jim Thorpe Area High School days. I

sat down with her by the lake one evening to find out more about her “century ride” that started from her residence in King of Prussia to her home in Lake Harmony on June 5.

Tell me about this ride. I wanted to do

what is called a century ride in the biking world — a hundred miles of riding in a day, in one continuous trip. I live in King of Prussia now, but through my parents, and now myself, I have a home in Split Rock.

a cyclist, Neil Sardiñas, figured out that from our home in King of Prussia to our house in Lake Harmony is exactly 100.5 miles.

What inspired you? I don’t know if you recall a plaque that I have: “Life is a beautiful ride.”

When my mother [Anna Nusko] was starting to fail somewhat, becoming less independent, it was weighing on her psychologically. My daughter Marni had this great idea of doing a project with her for Christmas that would result in a gift for me. Together they stained, designed, and painted a plaque that said: Life is a beautiful ride. This was around four years ago. It just seemed to give me so much inspiration, that I am still capable of doing this. And you’ve got to grab moments like that in life, and just do it. That’s what makes life a beautiful ride.

How did you train for this? We started training late winter/ early spring just by a 20-mile ride, then a 30-mile ride, then a 40-mile ride. And we just incrementally kept going until two weeks ago, we did an 80-mile ride. We did night rides, so we could get used to potentially being in See RIDE, page 8

Continued from page 7 the dark (which we did leave in the dark for the century ride). Just over time — a couple of months of training.

In addition to bike rides, you were also swimming. I was. And I really didn’t do it with the intent that it would be part of training for the biking, but it turned out to be best type of cross training I could do. I had started swimming the summer before to get myself in better shape, doing the same thing — starting out with 20 laps, then 30 laps, 40 laps, then participated in an English Channel challenge swim through my fitness club at home, where you had to swim the equivalent of the English Channel within a certain amount of time — not on the same day, but with a certain number of weeks. That really inspired me to do more swimming, and through that you get a lot of the same muscles — you get good core muscles. You get good leg strength from the kicking, and you get good upper body strength by just using your arms through swimming. And it turned out to be the best possible cross training I could have done for it. So now I am swimming anywhere from 85 to 90 laps a day. It has been great training for that. And it also helps you get psychologically ready for the endurance piece of it — you know, “you gotta keep going.”

What kind of bike do you have? I have a Trek bike. It is a hybrid Trek bike, so it’s good on a lot of different terrains. I love it. It’s geared out with lights and all kinds of snazzy stuff.

What time did you start? We started just after midnight, and we rode through the night.

Which is not as scary as it sounds, because from King of Prussia for about 40 miles we were on dedicated bike paths. We got a chance to see a lot of deer at night. We saw an opossum; we saw foxes and it was a wonderful experience. And as we started to head into Emmaus, we were on rural roads at that point, and we experienced the sunrise. It was a magical moment.

I understand you saw a bald eagle. We did.

That was further up, beyond Allentown on the D & L Trail. It was right around the Lehigh Gap area.

This beautiful majestic bald eagle was just sitting on the very top of what appeared to be a dead tree with no foliage. The blue, blue sky just made it look so regal. It almost was like you could touch it.

Continued from page 8 Lehigh Gap was where you entered the Poconos. Yes, just above Catasauqua. I think that might be right. It was technically the Poconos at that point.

What was the most challenging part of your ride? (Laughs) Without a doubt was climbing to get on top of the Pocono Plateau.

Without a doubt. Our total climb, total feet of climb was 5,281, one foot more than a mile of climbing, and most of it right at the end. That was probably the most challenging part of it, just staying focused. We chose a path that paralleled the Maury Road that had massive ruts from the recent rains, fallen logs, etc. I will admit, I had to walk a good portion of it because it was just so very steep. But it’s a lot, because you already have gone 80 miles on your legs at that point.

What time did you find yourself at the lake? About dinner time. It took us a good 18 hours almost.

Was there anybody here to greet you?

Oh yeah. (Laughs) Shout out to my wonderful neighbors, Bob and Lynne Riley, and probably some other folks. I wasn’t even sure who was on their porch. As they saw us coming, they started shaking the cowbells just like they do at the Tour de France. Despite being totally depleted psychologically and physically, it was a wonderful, a wonderful greeting. And there was a huge cake when we got here that said: “YOU DID IT!” When is your next bike ride? Um, I honestly don’t…I haven’t thought that far in advance. I’m still recovering from this one. I probably will do

another century ride. I don’t think it will be from King of Prussia to Lake Harmony. That was the hardest I think I have ever challenged my body.

In what condition is your bike now that you have done those hundred miles? I’m going to let Peterson’s Ski and Cycle tell me what condition that bike is in right now. On the Road

High gas prices have trimmed our sails when it comes to being on the road, leading us to be a bit clever. We attended the Sunday session of the Crawfish Festival in north New Jersey, carpooling with friends. The trip was an easy hour and a half from here.

There’s a lot to be said for this festival. It’s three stages of music, terrific food. The Sussex County Fairground is quite nice for an event location.

Arriving mid-afternoon, we explored the event, grabbed some Louisiana cooking to enjoy, and then found some shade, under which we could enjoy the music.

They day’s headliner, Samantha Fish, put on a terrific show. We’re putting this event on our schedule for next year.

Closer to home, Split Rock Resort hosted its annual Tastes of Pennsylvania wine festival.

Having the fun come to us is just so very nice. I consider it a bonus from being Lake Harmony — we deserve this stuff. For wine lovers this was awesome, wineries from all over the state offering their wares for sampling and sale. Ruth and I like wine, and did some buying at a handful of the tents. There was a fun vibe at the festival. People who were there sampling with you genuinely wanted to share their fun. (Pictures farther back.)

Split Rock had selected some good bands, and attracted some very good food vendors. We also bought a flavored vinegar and two gourmet nut butters, not to mention some beautiful baked items from Carmella’s Bakery of Scranton.

We rolled our purchases out, and were happy to get to the car, remembering one recent winefest when we didn’t escape ahead of an incoming thunderstorm, which opened up on us about 200 feet ahead of our car in front of the hotel.

Next for us will be the Celtic Fling on the site of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Mount Hope, PA. It’s an easy hour and a half from here on good roads. Back when I first came in to the area, I met some entertainers for an Irish festival at Rocky Glen Park outside of Scranton. They invited me to their performance at the Irish Festival at

Jack Frost Mountain. It was fun. When Ruth came into my life, she went with, and she liked it too, so we’ve been visiting Irish festivals for over 30 years.

This is a big one. They have a concert on Friday, but during the festival itself on Saturday and Sunday, nine stages with music, as well as having storytellers, Irish dance, and even a Scottish skills contest, things like caber tossing and sheaf throwing. Foods are spread throughout, and there are many people dressed to kilt. It’s a full day for your admission. The place is a giant bar, as the property is the site of a winery, a brewery, a distillery, and a cidery. A locally crafted beverage of your choice is never far from wherever you may be.

Over the years the owners have paved the main paths (in the early days it used to be a dust bowl.

For that matter, in the early days there were only job johnnies; now there are nice running water bathrooms.). The food stands and offerings have expanded. There’s plenty of parking. Hope to see some of you there. Tickets are only sold in advance, and they do sell out.

Fun comes to us just down the road from Lake Harmony in late July, when NASCAR arrives for a weekend at Pocono Raceway. For people wondering about stock car racing, considering becoming fans, the Friday evening ARCA race has $10 admission price that gives you access to the Raceway and its Fan Fair, as well as about a two hour stock car race that includes some of the See ON THE ROAD, page 14

up-and-coming race car drivers, as well as some regional talent.

For music lovers, the Pocono Mountains Music Festival is July 21 to 30, with five wonderful performances. On the first weekend, Thursday and Friday shows are at Buck Hill, and Saturday at the Pocono Mountain East High School. On the 29th, there’s a young artists showcase at the East High School, and the summer Pocono Pops Concert on the 30th at the Sherman in Stroudsburg.

For lovers of professional theater, the PA

Shakespeare Festival has opened its season at DeSales University. Ruth and I will attend one of their performances of Much Ado About Nothing in July. Much Ado performances are July 13 to August 7. This particular play has an outstanding cast, which we saw perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year, and were blown away by their talent. DeSales is a bit more than an hour’s drive.

A Chorus Line is being performed now through July 10. Their season ends with August Wilson’s Fences from July 27 to August 7.

Carbon County Fair offers fun You’re going to have a great time at this year’s Carbon County Fair being held August 8-13 on Little Gap Road in Palmerton. The fair is open Monday through Friday from 4 until 10.

Saturday, the fair opens early at 2 and closes at 10.

Monday is the opening ceremony, followed by line dancing with DJ Chicken Nugget, the band Steel Creek, a garden tractor pull and a fireworks spectacular.

Tuesday is children’s day and there is a ride special from 4-10. The Fabulous Grease Band also takes the stage with 2 shows, and don’t miss the Children’s Day Drawing and free Lumberjack contest.

Wednesday boasts Sr Citizen’s Day, the band, Nashville Music Company, and the first demolition derby of the week.

On Thursday, get ready for Ronnie McDowell and Nashville Artist Leigh Pollari. The 2nd demolition derby of the week will also be making the mud fly on Thursday evening.

For the very first time, on Friday, the Lehighton High School band will present at the

fair. Also on Friday is the rock band, Mystery City, the barnyard Olympics and the classic tractor pull.

On closing day, get ready for the popular trio, Dean Hahn & The Hawks followed by the Cramer Brothers band.

There will also be a Coal Cracker Cornhole tournament and a tough truck event. All week long, remember to look for Buster the Clown on the midway and check out the Amazing Anastasins, appearing for the first time at the fair.

Admission is $7 per person for everyone 6 years and older and there is an additional $6 admission fee for the demo derbies and the tough truck event, based on the same age guidelines. Parking is free. There is a daily ride bracelet available for purchase, although a strip of ride tickets may also be purchased.

Lake Harmony Post Office Notes

The U.S. Postal Service will implement new postage rates for most mailing (market dominant) products on July 10. The First Class Mail (1 oz.) letter rate for postage purchased at the Post Office will increase two cents to 60¢ from 58¢. The “Metered Mail” rate for First Class Mail (1 oz.) letters which includes online postage and postage meters, will increase 4 cents to 57¢. Additional ounces (Post Office and Metered Mail) for a First Class Mail letters are increasing by four cents to 24¢ from 20¢.

First Class Mail Flats/Large Envelopes rates for 1 ounce will increase four cents to $1.20. Each additional ounce will cost 24¢.

First Class Mail International (1 oz.) letter rates for postage purchased at the Post Office or online will increase ten cents to $1.40 Postcards will increase by four cents to 44¢.

Certified Mail will increase by twenty-five cents to $4.00.

The Mountain’s Edge restaurant will bring a mechanical bull in for brave riders on the 27th.

The Lake Harmony Association has its next road clean-up planned for mid-July, and another this summer in mid-August. Their annual meeting was June 23, featuring guest speakers Dave Carew, Kidder Township Manager, and John Devine of B.C.M. The Lake Harmony Concerned Citizens will hold their annual meeting on July 13.

Bids will be sought for the Kidder Township Sewer Project, with ads to attract bids place in late

July and the bids themselves coming in on Sept.

10. The township has received a commitment from PENNVest for a loan of up to $11 million towards the sewer construction, at a rate of 1.342% for the first 7.5 years, then another 15 years at 2.565%.

The Carbon County Shelter and Carbon County Friends of Animals have dogs and cats available for adoption.

More History of the Lake Harmony Vol. Fire Co. In 1983, the company took possession of a 1974 Chevy 4,000 gallon tank truck, donated to the LHVFC by Herr Oil Co. and Sun Oil of Philadelphia through the efforts of Ed LaCrosse and Dave Petzold.

In 1986, the West Long Branch Fire Co. #2 donated a 1952 army-type brush truck.

In January of 1989, the company bought a 1987 fire truck with a 2,000 gallon tank for $80,000.

The 1965 American LaFrance was taken out of service, and retired to a firefighting museum in Ohio. The 1952 brush truck was donated to the Albrightsville VFC. In 1993, the company bought a new KME Firefox with a 75’ ladder for $327,000.

In 1997, the company bought a used Saulsbury Special Service Truck from the Glenside Fire Co. for $85,000.

A new KME tanker was bought in 2002 with a 2,500 poly tank for $160,000.

Mountain Crafters invited visitors to their shop in the Old Stage Plaza in Albrightsville.

At the Pocono Playhouse in July, are Camelot through the 14th, then The King and I from July 17 to 28. Their children’s shows are Jack and the Beanstalk weekends in July, followed by Aladdin for three weekends into early August.

The 11th annual Pocono Blues Festival featuring Shamekia Copeland is the first weekend in August at Big Boulder, followed by the 4th annual Classic Rock Bikers Rally the next weekend, and the 7th Musical Gathering on the Mountain mid-month.

David E. Hayes, a former resident and police officer of Kidder Township, graduated on May 31 from the Baltimore Police Academy. There

is a photo as Hayes also received the Police Commissioner’s Award of Excellence for his academic achievement and demonstration of his professional efforts. Family and friends from our area attended the ceremony.

Hurricane Agony

Fifty years ago, in late June of 1972, the remnants of Hurricane Agnes settled over the northeast United States. It rained for days, with rainfall totals ranging from 10 to 18 inches locally.

The Wyoming Valley was one of the areas hardesthit. The Susquehanna River crested to 40.9 feet and the river expanded one mile across. Scenes of the overflowing Susquehanna purging a Forty Fort cemetery of its coffins and rescuers piloting boats on flooded downtown Wilkes-Barre streets filled TV and newspapers. Ironically, fires raged in some buildings that were up to their second story in floodwaters.

The Lehigh River did not flood, but water in the Francis E. Walter Dam went from its normal 50 feet level to a high of 148 feet. Locally, many people did what they could to help. The Boy Scouts’ Camp Acahela in Stoddartsville was used as a refuge for 125 children affected by the flooding of the Susquehanna. As the waters receded, food and clothing were distributed to the people whose homes and businesses were affected. In all of

Pennsylvania, at least 220,000 people were left homeless, with more than 68,000 homes and 3,000 businesses destroyed. There was mud everywhere.

In Wilkes-Barre, it was estimated that 13 people lost their lives. Governor Shapp called it “Hurricane Agony.” In Pennsylvania alone, Agnes caused approximately 2.1 billion dollars in damage — equal to two thirds of the total recorded in the northeast United States. Many families were housed in trailers located by the Wyoming Valley Mall for over a year before they could rebuild or repair their flood-damaged homes.

As devastating as Hurricane Agnes and its aftermath were, people managed to put the pieces of their lives back together bit by bit. Our congressman at the time was Dan Flood (no kidding), who helped secure federal funds for rebuilding. Most people don’t think of the Flood of ’72 much anymore, but if you go to Wilkes-Barre, you may see a marker on a random building that shows you the high-water mark from that disaster.

Remind me to check my homeowner’s insurance policy to see if it covers flooding.

Lake Harmony Rescue Squad fundraisers in June and July

The LHRS set up a table at the Split Rock Wine Fest selling T-Shirts for $25 each. Sales were brisk (so was the weather). T-Shirts can also be bought online at www.lakeharmonyambulance.com.

T-Shirts will be available at the Rescue Squad’s summer Breakfast, and the hot dog fundraiser.

On Race Weekend, July 22 and 23, the LHRS will be fundraising on the Lake Harmony Beverage property. T-Shirts will be on sale. There will be free hot dogs for all who stop by.

The LHRS’ summer breakfast will be at the Galleria at Split Rock from 7 a.m. to noon. Cost for the meal is $10 for adults, $5 for children, and free for kids under 5 years-old. Proceeds go to support the LHRS operations.

Donations from the ’21-‘22 campaign towards the now ordered 4-wheel drive ambulance continue to come in. Thanks to recent donations, the campaign has exceeded $50,000. The first payment for the unit will be $72,000, so any additional donations are greatly welcomed.

New on the needs list for the LHRS is a large generator to run the station and keep the units warm on winter nights in the event of an emergency where the power goes out.

Let’s Save the Dogs tourney date anounced The 2022 Let’s Save The Dogs fundraising golf tournament is August 7 at the Split Rock Golf Club.

The event raises needed funds to rescue dogs from kill shelters, and to then get those dogs adopted through Red Rock Rescue, and money also is raised for the Carbon County Animal Shelter.

Hole sponsors are $75 each, program sponsors start at $50, and there are more sponsorships for longest drive and closest to the pin prizes. The event has a basket raffle, and basket donations, prizes or certificates are welcome.

Obituaries DOUGLAS A. HOWARD

EDWARD DARROW

Douglas A. Howard, 51, of Lake Harmony, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 30, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Lehighton.

Born in Kingston, he was a son of the late Ward K. Howard and Carol (Sprow) Howard.

Doug was a graduate of Jim Thorpe High School and Wilkes College.

He was a long-time employee of Shenanigans and Nick’s Lake House in Lake Harmony, where he made many friends of both locals to the Lake Harmony area and visitors to the Poconos. His bartending was nearly as legendary as his stories and jokes, often entertaining the crowd while serving drinks.

His interests included coin and currency collecting, supporting the Second Amendment, enjoying sporting events of all kinds, and visiting with friends in Lake Harmony, usually with his beloved Golden Retriever Maya by his side.

Surviving are his brother, Bruce, and his wife Suzanne, Bedford, NH; sister, Melissa, and her husband Donald Heptner Jr., Bethlehem; nephews, Henry Howard and Colin Heptner; niece, Lauren Heptner; and his Maya.

Funeral services will be private by request of the family. A celebration of life will be held later this summer at a date to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to the Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton (baypathumane.org), Lake Harmony Fire Company (lakeharmonyfire.com), or Lake Harmony Rescue (lakeharmonyambulance.com).

Edward Kenneth Darrow, 77, of Lake Harmony, formerly of Glenside, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2022, surrounded by his loving family in the Lebanon VA Eagle Hospice Center. He was the husband of Vicki (Roth) Darrow, with whom he shared 55 years of fun and joy.

Ed, son of Lloyd and Katherine (Burns) Darrow was born on May 1, 1945, in Utica, NY. Ed grew up in Glenside, and graduated from Abington Senior High School in 1963.

He served the United States Army as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star and numerous other air medals.

He earned a B.S. in Business from St. Joseph’s University in 1972. Following his active time in the military he continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves, flying out of Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove, while also building a manufacturing business in Montgomery Township. During his time as president/owner of Country Furniture, Inc., Ed was integral in opening Pennsylvania exports to Asia to benefit independent businesses.

Ed was always an active member of his communities. In Glenside, he was a volunteer firefighter with the Weldon Fire Company starting in 1962.

He served the Fire Department of Montgomery Township as a business owner and volunteer, and in his retirement joined the Lake Harmony Fire Department and held various roles, including president. Ed was bestowed the Kidder Township First Responder award in 2016.

Later in life, Ed loved ski instructing at Jack Frost Ski Resort where he made sure his granddaughters could ski shortly after they could walk.

In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his children, E. Keith Darrow, husband of Lori, New Hope, and Katie Long, wife of Douglas, Sinking Spring; grandchildren, Caroline and Elizabeth Long and Willa and Ethan Darrow.

Burial services with full military honors was held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, June 8.

When your minor league team changes its nickname

by Matthew Paris There have been a lot of changes in Minor League Baseball recently. So many teams that used to be are no more, and the charm that used to be part of minor league summer ball has waned, too.

This is a story of what happened to my favorite minor league team.

In 2012, an expansion team known as the Sugar Land Skeeters was added to the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB), an independent baseball league. Based out of the Sugar Land area of Houston, the team’s nickname came from what happens during hot Texas nights: people are greeted with loads of mosquitos.

With the 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19, the Skeeters competed in the Constellation Energy League, a farm-club league.

That’s when MLB’s Houston Astros got interested.

The Astros purchased an ownership stake in the team and made the Skeeters their Triple-A affiliate,

joining the historic Pacific Coast League (PCL).

That was a huge upgrade for the team.

But the upward move cost the Skeeters its nickname. Wanting to capitalize on Houston’s connection to the U.S. space program, the Astros rebranded Skeeters as the Sugarland Space Cowboys. Ugh! The Skeeters fit nicely, with the team’s logo showing a mosquito with fangs piercing a baseball. That’s better than the new logo, which pictures a cowboy in an astronaut’s helmet. Really?

I’m disappointed, but I want the team to do well, so adjust I will — Go, Space Cowboys! (Note: The Space Cowboys are 21-33 at the time of the writing, in last place, 11 games behind PCL East divisionleading Okla City.) __________ Matthew Paris lives in the Houston, TX area and contributes articles regularly to The Sports Column.

Reconstruction of North Lake Drive

The rusty iron drainage pipe pictured here was removed from under North Lake Drive in Lake Harmony as part of the delayed but now underway reconstruction of that road. All of the pipes under the road are being replaced with new heavy-duty plastic pipes. The engineer on site during the work, being done in front of Piggy’s Restaurant that day, said that the dirt around the pipe had set solid, even as the pipe was rotting away. The work, being done by local crews of Haines & Kibblehouse, includes the addition of speed humps. Those will be installed as the paving is completed — with photos in our next issue.

I told a fib for 50 years and it made me famous

by Jerry Manning I remember the day. It was Monday, October 6, 1969. I was a 4th grader living in Tennessee.

All the guys in my class were talking about the same thing — what happened over the weekend, on Saturday specifically, in the first prime-time, nationally televised college football game. The Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Ole Miss Rebels 33-32, that night. But more importantly for me, Archie Manning’s performance made him famous (436 yards passing, two touchdowns, and 104 yards rushing). Archie made me famous, too.

Yes, my last name is Manning. At school that Monday, it seemed that everyone wanted to know if I was his kin. Little did I know that I’d be asked the same question over and over again over the next 50-plus years. And somewhere over those years, I fabricated a lie. “Archie Manning is my 3rd cousin, once removed, on my mother’s side,” I’d reply.

But, in truth, that couldn’t be possible. My mother’s family is not from the Manning line.

Besides, I’ve lived most of my life in Tennessee, and Archie’s family is from Mississippi. My fabrication was hardly believable, until his son Peyton signed with the Tennessee Vols. Over the next four years, Peyton became a legend in Tennessee. Suddenly, my lie became believable. It became even more credible when Peyton bought a house in my hometown!

But rather than fess up, I kept repeating the falsehood: “Peyton is my 3rd cousin, once removed, on my mother’s side.” Over the years, I’ve wondered just how many people have thought, “That can’t be true!”

I’m an introverted, private person, but I do have to admit that I’m proud to carry one of the most famous last names in sports. My only regret is that my wife and I didn’t name our only son Archie, Peyton, Eli, or Cooper. Carbon County has a new hospital Photos & story

by Seth Isenberg Carbon County has a new hospital. On June 6, the Lehigh Valley Health Network opened Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon west of Lehighton on Route 443, just west of the shopping district. The ribbon was cut for the project, followed by tours of the building.

The 100,587 square foot building features a 16 bed emergency room, a 20 bed in-patient floor with state-of-the-art telemedicine technology (and some wonderful views out the windows), two hightech operating rooms (see page 3), surgical suites for procedures, and shiny new MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray facilities.

The sparkling new operating room at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon has all of the new technologies. It was open to be photographed on ribbon-cutting day only, to be fully sterilized and ready for when the hospital accepted its first patients later that week.

Lehigh Valley Hospital – Carbon president Christine Biege, with the scissors, had the honor of cutting the ribbon for the area’s newest hospital. In her remarks, she said: “Great health care involves more than brick and mortar, the latest technology, or access to services and specialists. Great health care starts with people. Friend caring for friend. Neighbor caring for neighbor. Our pledge is that you will find exception health care here at LVH-Carbon.”

There are cancer care rooms including an infusion center. There are also full rehabilitation facilities.

A variety of physicians’ offices are located on the west part of the campus.

And with all this, the building is designed to expand.

The hospital was open for patients about a day after the ribbon cutting.

Lehigh Valley Hospital– Carbon is one of three new hospitals the network is opening in 2022, making for a total of 13 hospital campuses.

Model RR Society plans Christmas in July open house The Carbon Model Railroad Society will again hold its Christmas in July Open House at 529 Ore Street in Bowmanstown on Saturdays and Sundays, July 9 & 10 and 16 & 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. The building is also open on Thursday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The HO scale displays are in various stages of completion and are excellent learning tools.

The clubs HO and N scale displays will also be in operation on the second floor along with new and pre-owned trains and accessories for sale. The club’s traveling caboose with its HO scale operating display can be visited in the back yard.

Ways to make your traffic merging safer on roads Travelers can drive defensively and take precautions to prevent merging collisions.

What steps can you take to prevent merging collisions?

It's not a good idea to make assumptions about what other drivers will or won't do. Those assumptions might cause a driver to be caught off guard when the unexpected happens. Drivers who are entering, exiting or changing lanes on busy roadways should never assume other motorists will make room for them to merge.

For these reasons, motorists should drive defensively and take precautions when passing vehicles to prevent merging collisions. And CDL drivers or drivers towing a trailer, remember the extra weight makes it harder to stop.

Adjust your speed to match the flow of traffic before entering the roadway.

Yield to drivers on the freeway but avoid stopping unless absolutely necessary.

Find a three to four-second gap in traffic to merge. And be looking for the vehicle you want to be behind.

Check for cars around your vehicle before entering a lane. And remember to check your blind spot. Your mirrors will only reflect where they are aimed. So be sure to actually turn your head to see if the way is clear.

Use your turn signals early, a recommended 100 to 300 feet before merging or changing lanes.

Wait for the solid line to end before merging. A solid line indicates that lane changes are prohibited.

Cross one lane of traffic at a time.

Be prepared for your exit, and maneuver into the far-right lane as you approach it.

In general, keep up with the speed of traffic until you exit. However, it's important to adjust your speed depending on the weather conditions and the design of the exit ramp.

If you must pass a vehicle, pass on the left and return to your lane once the vehicle is visible in your rearview mirror. Increase this distance when passing larger vehicles. If you're driving a commercial vehicle, be sure to check your side mirrors and blind-spot mirrors as some commercial vehicles don't have a rearview mirror.

Changing lanes properly can greatly reduce the risk of crashes, fatalities and injuries on the road. Driving safety also means becoming familiar with the laws in your state, such as lane change restrictions at intersections, on bridges and in no passing zones. Check with your state's driver licensing agency for additional information and learn more about safe driving.

Zipper merge Road work or accidents may require lane closures. When you encounter lane closures, you may need to get into a new lane or allow others to get into your lane. Zipper merging is considered to be a best practice by the Federal Highway Administration and a safe way to handle lane closures. Zipper merging is when drivers use both lanes of traffic until they reach the defined merge area and then alternate into the open lane in a zipper fashion. A zipper merge reduces unexpected and dangerous lane switching as well as traffic backup.

Celtics may have lost in the NBA Finals, but they won the hearts of millions

by Chris Lee-Sye This year — throughout the playoffs and Finals — I noticed a kid (I’ll bet you did, too) running around the court before games and locker room like he owned the place. That kid is Jayson Christopher Tatum Jr., or ‘Deuce,’ and he’s 4 years old. His dad, only 24, was on his way to his first NBA Finals, and Duece had a front-row seat for the entire ride.

Now, I’m a good dad, perhaps a great dad, and even a fantastic dad. I’ve always said that if there’s one thing I’m to be remembered for, it’s that I was a super dad. With that, one of the things I love to see is other great dads. And while all this basketball business was going on in Boston and around the country, another great dad was in the public eye under a microscope.

Jayson Tatum had an amazing playoff run on a team that hit the season halfway point with a losing record. How remarkable was that turnaround? The Celtics finished the season with

the best record in NBA history for a team with a losing record at the midway point.

But even by his own account, Tatum’s NBA Finals performance wasn’t what he had hoped.

A lot of players on the Celtics struggled at times throughout the series. A combined 0 total games played in previous Finals was tough to overcome.

Deuce Tatum, however, didn’t see any of that.

Didn’t know. Didn’t care. He saw his dad and his father living his dream that now will become a lifetime of memories. Duece won’t understand the magnitude now and probably won’t for quite a while. But one day, he’ll look back at photos, videos, and memorabilia, and realize what it all meant.

Deuce Tatum will remember mimicking his dad’s stretches on the court before games, high-fiving the other players in the locker room, watching games courtside, and holding on to his dad’s leg during the national anthem. He’ll be struck that all those moments were televised live to millions of people worldwide.

He doesn’t care now that his dad’s team didn’t win, and he won’t care when he’s my age. I’ll bet he woke up this morning ready to be the most important thing in his dad’s world, and rightly so.

Some things are just bigger than basketball, you know. His idol, his role model, is invincible in his eyes. And in a world full of negatives, this is something that truly matters.

Jayson Tatum, you are one hell of a basketball player, an Olympic gold medalist, and an NBA Finalist. You are also a World Champion Dad. And now, you are my new favorite player. _________ Missouri-based Chris Lee-Sye wrote this Father’s Day ode for The Sports Column.

Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival 2022 Season Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s 31st summer of productions The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival returned to full-capacity attendance for live indoor performances June 3 through August 7 at the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts on the bucolic Center Valley campus of DeSales University.

The season opened with Every Brilliant Thing. The Main Stage theatre has opened with the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning A Chorus Line, which illuminates the ambitions of ensemble dancers in the final chorus audition for an upcoming Broadway show. One of the longest running Broadway musicals of all time, A Chorus Line boasts classic numbers such as “What I Did for Love,” and “One.” The season will continue in the Schubert Theater with William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. With a zest for love and a love of life, Shakespeare’s spirited comedy offers a tale of two courtships. Beatrice and Benedick elevate the art of the quarrel in their duel of glittering wordplay, while Claudio and Hero have their true love put to the test. Dastardly villains are challenged by comical officers, as honor and desire collide to create much ado about laughter and love.

The season will conclude on the Main Stage with August Wilson’s groundbreaking Pulitzer Prizeand Tony Award-winning drama Fences, an epic work of stunning poetry by a Pennsylvania native hailed by critics as “a blockbuster piece of theater” and “the strongest, most passionate American dramatic writing since Tennessee Williams.”

Fences depicts the yearnings and struggles of the Maxson family led by their patriarch Troy, a former home run king of the Negro baseball leagues who now supports his family as a garbage collector. Set in 1950s Pittsburgh against the

backdrop of a rapidly changing America, Fences is a timeless American story of fathers and sons, husbands and wives, dreams and realities.

In addition to its full-scale productions, PSF will present a limited engagement of a live staged reading of The River Bride, written by Marisela Treviño Orta. Brazilian folklore and lyrical storytelling combine to weave a magical tale of love, fate and transformation. The river holds many secrets, including a mysterious visitor who arrives just before a much-anticipated family wedding. Set in a small Brazilian fishing village, two sisters grapple with their own happilyever-after as they are tested to remain true to themselves and to each other.

Integral to PSF programming since its inception, children’s productions will continue to delight families in the Schubert Theatre with a fun and feisty fairytale mash-up entitled Little Red, by Andrew Kane; and Erin Sheffield’s highenergy Shakespeare for Kids returns to the Main Stage. PSF also anticipates opening up the opportunity to attend its annual Young Company Shakespeare Project to our patrons again, with more information to come.

She writes: Baby fawns are born end of May through end of June. This baby is about one week old. I was watching the mom for a few days prior. I could see her swollen belly. I drove by the field several times a day. I saw them the day the baby was born. At that time I was unable to grab my camera because I had my grandkids. I kept a close eye from a distance. After I got this photo we had several hot days. It seemed all the deer went into hiding somewhere in the shade of the woods. Moms keep them very protected. You will notice more sightings as they are growing during the month of July and August.

Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau returns to sponsor the NASCAR Xfinity Series race LONG POND, Pa. (June 23, 2022) – Pocono Raceway has partnered with the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau for the Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday, July 23. This will mark the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureaus return to title sponsorship at Pocono Raceway.

A letter from a Friends of the library Hello library friends, Well here we are in 2022 – and perhaps we are all wondering when we can get back to doing the things we used to enjoy. I, for one, always enjoyed my connection with the Dimmick Library and the “Friends of the Dimmick.” The library and its fundraising arm supported my enthusiasm for reading and sharing that enthusiasm with others.

And I found it very satisfying to be involved with a group of people who supported one of the prizes of our local community – the Dimmick Memorial Library.

I want to bring everyone up to date on what the “Friends of the Dimmick” have been able to accomplish in the past year or two – even in spite of the restrictions of Covid.

An exciting new activity for the Friends group is the opportunity to volunteer at the Penn Kidder Branch of the Dimmick. Penn Kidder Library is located in Albrightsville on the corner of State Route 903 and Old Stage Rd. Please let the library staff know if you are interested in more information about this volunteer opportunity.

Over the years, “Friends of the Dimmick” held book sales, merchandise sales, Tommy’s gift card sales, and other fundraisers (remember those fun Chili Cook Off events!) which built up a nice savings account. And, over the last seven months we earned more than $4,600 in sales of books and sales of T-shirts and library bags!

During this past year and a half, we have used some of those funds to support the Dimmick Library financially in several ways: • We funded prizes for a summer reading program.

We contributed to a grant for important computer upgrades.

• We purchased copies of Vince Hydro’s Mauch Chunk history books for sale at the library.

• At the end of 2021 we funded all the staff bonuses.

• And, our major contribution to the library in 2021 was funding the required purchases of new books and other library materials for the library’s collection – totaling over $7,000!

I want to thank all of you who have hung in there with us these past 2 years – especially those of you who came out to help work the book sales. Not getting together as a group has been challenging, but I hope this year we will be able to get together again! In the meantime, you can check the Dimmick Memorial Library Facebook and website for updated information on special programs, including the Friends book sale schedule.

The Facebook pages of both the Dimmick and the Penn Kidder Library also offer interesting tidbits on books and programs for adults and children, and many ways to support the library.

As a long-time “Friend of the Dimmick,” I am always looking for input from our Friends or other community members. I welcome your feedback on what we are doing as well as any suggestions for what we can do in the future. So please, contact me – here or through the library.

I hope we all can continue doing good work for these important libraries in our extended community.
