Seeing with new eyes

July 2020

by Ruth Isenberg

Ruth Isenberg, Editor Seth Isenberg, Ads / Distribution Publishers (Continuing the work of founders Frank Pieri and Mary Farnschlader, 1995 – 2018)

I think I’m appreciating this summer even more than usual, just because I’m seeing it through eyes that have also been looking at the reality of society with Covid-19. Summer storms and summer sunshine seem to alternate, but one thing is constant this summer at The Lake. People are especially happy to be out and about. Covid-19 containment has created a society that’s ready to play. A sunny day brings out beachgoers and boaters. Music is everywhere — people are everywhere. For the most part, they are being considerate and polite, wearing masks and not crowding. Some visitors may be looking at The Lake in a new way this year, thinking about how nice it would be to live in a community like this, far from city congestion and crime. It is a special place, for a weekend, a week, or a lifetime. As we near mid-Summer, I’m taking time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds me, and the peace that comes at sunrise and sunset. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of the season (though it’s a little less busy this year), and miss the simple pleasures that mean the most.

Kidder Supervisor Barbara Franzosa resigns, Ray Gluck returns to board by Seth Isenberg At Kidder Township’s municipal building on June 18, supervisors held their June meeting in person, socially distanced, with four supervisors, four staff and 17 citizens spread out through the room, plus solicitor Casey Gillespie by telephone. At the start of the meeting, it

was announced that supervisor Barbara Franzosa had sent a letter of resignation due to family obligations. She had served four and a half years on her term. This was accepted with regret. Former supervisor Ray Gluck, who said he was there when the borough needed him… was. The vacancy board chairman was tapped again to serve as a

supervisor — for his fourth time as a supervisor. Gluck will serve through the end of 2021. The seat will be on the 2021 ballot for a full 6-year term. Gluck was present at the meeting in the audience, and stayed in the audience for the rest of the meeting. Roadwork for 2020 will be underway for the Kirk Street drain and Kresge Lane and north Moseywood Road paving projects as soon are bids are received (Kirk St. on June 25, the paving on July 1). A grant came in from Carbon County for $55,000 to be used for some drainage work alongside the Kresge Lane project. Roadmaster Bruce Berger reported that the area of Laurel Lane and Henning Road took damage after the 5″ downpour last week. That will need repairing. Schiffer Bituminous did the leaf and inlet cleaning around the township during May. With the old leaf vacuum sitting, no longer needed, Berger got approval to offer it for sale on MuniciBid. Police have started to get busy again with noise and fireworks complaints. Supervisors approved the police agreement with the Jim Thorpe School District when officers are needed to attend basketball games or other activities. The department received a $2,400 matching grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, to be matched with department funds to buy new bulletproof vests. These have been bought. Kidder Police reported 117 calls for May including 12 disturbing the peace calls, 6 domestics and 6 fights. The fireworks display by Split Rock Resort has been rescheduled to Labor Day weekend. supervisor, the township needs someone to fill the Vacancy Board position. It is also noted that there’s an open position on the township’s Planning Commission. If interested in either, please send, e-mail or drop off a note of interest to the township office. E-mail to Kidder.secretary@atlanticbbn.net The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad reports making 20 calls in May. Two more new people were added for the crew. Both township fire companies are looking for answers on improving radio reception. There was an incident this past weekend where radios were not working in the incident area. Lake Harmony VFD fire chief Ralph Lennon explained that the radio signal barely works at the fire station. Gene Getz of the Albrightsville VFC also asked supervisors for them to consider allotting more funds to that company, given the added expense of operating the Tannery station. LHVFD reported 11 calls for May including a vehicle fire on the Interstate, and a dwelling fire. AVFC reported 19 calls, including 7 quick medical responses, 7 with LHVFD, a brush fire, a dwelling fire and a search and rescue. Fire chief Lennon also noted that the access road from Route 940 into the Frances Walter Dam will be closed starting June 22, through October, for reconstruction of the roadway. This leaves the area around the dam that’s in Kidder Township cut off from normal emergency response. He gained permission from supervisors to ask the White Haven Volunteer Fire Company to be put on the 911 call list for any calls for that area during the road closure. Building permits for May included carports, sheds, decks, fences, a hot tub, and re-roof-

ing — 18 in all. Supervisors approved bills totaling $494,767. $391,329 went to emergency services and the fire equipment fund; $53,610 for bills like taxes, insurances, and pensions; $26,920 to County Waste for trash hauling; and $21,799 to bills starting with $10,552 to ARRO for engineering fees, $2,678 for equipment repair, $1,500 to the township’s solicitors; $1,450 for uniform replacement, gasoline and diesel for $1,159; and 20 smaller bills. As the meeting wrapped up, residents of Tannery made complaints about a firewood-making and selling business that has set

up at a property in that section of town. Residents say that it is noisy, with traffic and truck and customer noise at all hours, seven-days-a-week. Chief of police Matt Kuzma will send officers out to cite them if there’s noise after 11 p.m. He said the landowner has been cited already, and has a month to resolve the issues. The township’s declaration of emergency continues to be in effect as long as the state declaration holds. The next regular supervisors meeting will be July 16 at the municipal building in Lake Harmony, socially distanced, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Nearly four million people will receive their stimulus check in the form of a prepaid debit card, but some might not realize exactly what it is when it arrives in the mail. The Treasury Department said Tuesday that the prepaid debit cards will come in a plain enve-

lope from ***Money Network Cardholder Services.*** There have been reports of some recipients thinking the card is a scam and even destroying it when it arrives. On The Road by Seth Isenberg

We finally did get On the Road last month. Our state began to open up to our west, so we began to head west to find an old-fashioned pre-Covid-19 welcome. On one of our trips we headed toward the town of Benton, with the idea we’d do whatever presented itself. The ride was beautiful. Arriving in Benton, we saw a sign for a cidery, and decided to stop and sample some of their hard ciders. It was a good decision, in that the Colonel Rickett’s Cider Mill makes good quality ciders. Their cider, made in whiskey barrels, had a strong whiskey flavor in some of the varieties. We found two varieties we liked and bought bottles, then put ourselves on the mailing list to learn when the next batch of pineapple-ginger cider was ready. Benton is known for its summer rodeo, which has been cancelled this year. It’s at the edge of nowhere, and we found the truth of that after taking a side road north of town which promised that we’d find someplace called Jamison City. So following

a stream, we came into a tiny cluster of homes, a business, and the local firehouse. Another mile brought us to what was left of Jamison City. If Benton was the edge of nowhere, this was nowhere. But there was a little bar/restaurant in this hamlet, the Jamison City Hotel. It looked inviting, and we were hungry and curious. We got ourselves a nice thick hamburger and a homemade dessert, and learned that this place was an old logging town from the early 1900s. The population today of the whole valley is a bit more than a hundred people, but it was booming for a bit more than 15 years. Then the lumber mill, logging and associated tanning businesses closed, and the town crumbled away. There are about a dozen buildings left, two of which are historic—the old railway station and the town’s general store, both long abandoned. We took the back way out, which turned out to be a well-maintained gravel road that took us uphill for miles, passing a waterfall along the way. We finally reached the state paved highway just above the entrance to Ricketts Glen State Park, so we went in. We took a park tour, noticing campSee ON THE ROAD, page 18

ers from New Jersey, Maryland, even Massachusetts, then we stopped at the park beach for a short walk. After our visit, we went home via a road less traveled, through Hunlock’s Creek, another town whose time has come and gone, this one from the coal boom, arriveing home at last light, having enjoyed an adventure. Another “on the road” day trip was our long-awaited trip to Knoebels Amusement Resort on July 10. We’d planned to go on Monday the 6th for the afternoon, but I instead spent that time with a relative getting him admitted through the VA’s emergency room. (He’s home at this writing with a bunch of new medicines.) Our timing into Knoebels was right after a storm that had cleared a bunch of the day’s crowd out. It was nice to be back in the park, so we took an easy walk around to people watch, then decided to enjoy our favorite ride, the train that takes a ride into the woods under the big roller coaster. We saw that folks were separated, with an empty seat or more between groups, and everyone masked. One of our other favorites, the skyride, was closed, we think because of electrical storms in the area. We decided instead to enjoy the shows. There was a little family circus at 5, then the show that brought us to Knoebels that day at 6, Rick K and the Allnighters, with special guest The Belltones. In a properly socially distanced crowd of 100 plus (in an area that could seat 300) he and his band gave a really good show. Storm clouds threatened just as the show ended, so we headed out – seeing lighting off in the distance and hearing thunder. We’ll be back for another afternoon or evening this summer, likely to see another show. Rick K is back in August, but there’s a nice list of country, classic rock and more, performed on Knoebels famous bandshell. There is no charge to park, and no charge to come in to the park or see a show. Knoebels is about an hour and a half drive from Lake Harmony. For our Journal newspapers I write a column called Seth’s Sightings. Its origin, back in the 1990s, is that readers would send stories of encounters with local wildlife, plus other tales. Ruth and I had a ‘sighting’ of our own. Arriving home from work a couple of weeks ago, there was time enough for me to do some yard work. Ruth drove in after me, and said that she just had a bear walk past her, into the neighbor’s yard. We live a half a mile inside a densely inhabited area, so bears are rare here. I went out to do my work to pick up some trimming I had done days earlier. With rake

and trash can in hand, I saw that the bear was still on the neighbor’s property emptying their bird feeder - nothing unusual here to any of my readers. But as I continued my work on the side of our property away from where the bear had been, it comes around the corner, then proceeds to squat and take a poop. It didn’t see me some 40’ away. When done, the bear spotted the neighbor’s trash can and raided it, before wandering off. Looking towards August, we’re hoping to resume museum visits now that they are reopening. Museums are our refuge on days when it’s 90 degrees and humid – or raining all day. This summer’s events and activities have been severely limited by Covid-19, with many of the events we had planned to attend cancelled. A ray of hope - The Celtic Fling and Highland Fames that was to be in late June, has been pushed to August 22 and 23. We’re going if the event is held. The event is in the PA Renaissance Faire “shire” in Mount Hope, PA. The PA Renaissance Faire itself was pushed to start Labor Day weekend, then running weekends to November 1. The Celtic Classic in Bethlehem September 25 to 27 is another ray of hope on the horizon. More about all these events, and also the Bloomsburg Fair September 25 to October in my next “On The Road.”

July 1996 On the front page and onto page 3 of this issue is a story about The Old Jail in Jim Thorpe, which is a museum. Due are due for the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad. A change in the dispatch frequency from the Carbon County Communications Center means the LHRS needs to buy new radios — at a cost of $12,000. The LHRS also needs an additional Automated External Defibrillator for $5,050. Both of these costs are above and beyond normal operation expenses — so additional donations are greatly appreciated. A story describes how the area, up until the 1940s, had a big business in picking huckleberries. Families of pickers would arrive each summer to do the picking and packing. The berries were then taken to Pocono Summit to go via railroad express to markets in New York and Philadelphia.

Pickers received between 6 and 7 cents per quart. If the berries were plentiful, a good picker could pick 100 quarts a day. Back in the berry-picking days, people would start fires to burn off the high brush so that the low berry bushes got enough sunlight. The Lake Harmony Concerned Citizens Association will host a golf tournament on Friday, August 9 at the Split Rock Golf Course, with food and festivities afterwards at the Lake Harmony Lodge. 18624 Congratulations to new grandparents Barbara and Bill Wyatt — Cheyanne Alexandria Delaney; Congratulations to new grandparents Carl and Jean Ache — Jeffrey Carl Ache Jr. Shenanigans celebrated their 9th anniversary on July 23.
