As summer winds down, I find myself speeding up. There are so many things I still want to do, places I still want to go, before summer is over. But seasons change, no matter how much we’d like them to stay. As I write this, back to school preparations are in full swing. A recent discussion with friends touched on adding commute time to our schedules to allow for school busses mornings andIt’safternoons.stillreally hot during the day, but the evenings are noticeably cooler. My dogs and I have gotten into the habit of sitting outside in the morning as I drink my first cup of coffee, and the mornings have also become cooler. But a habit is a habit, to dogs, and I foresee donning heavy flannel in the months to come and continuting to at least enjoy a sip or two on the patio. Seth thinks I might be doing this into the winter.

Speaking of the patio, my hanging cherry tomato baskets have about stopped their abundant production. But my fall flowers are underway, including the mums I picked up last week. Their cheery colors remind me that I have as many happy things to do this fall as I did this summer.

The Pocono Mountains may seem to be a remote part of Pennsylvania, and a great place to get away from it all. However, did you realize that over 50 million people live within 200 miles of our region, and almost a third of our nation’s population lives within 500 miles? This explains why we are beginning to see warehouses and distribution centers popping up along our highways.

With the intersection of Interstate Route 80 and the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Kidder Township, and the intersection of Routes 80 and 81 in nearby Butler Township, we are at the nexus of major highways in the northeast. You can travel 2,900 miles from east coast to west coast on I-80 and 111 miles from Plymouth Meeting to Clarks Summit on the Turnpike. I-81 will take you from the New YorkCanadian border to Tennessee and is part of the fastest route between three national capitals: Ottawa, Washington DC, and Mexico City. In the early years the road from Mauch Chunk (now the Borough of Jim Thorpe) took about four hours by horse and wagon. In the winter, with snow on the ground, travelers used horse and sleigh. Once you got to the lake, the roads were mere trails. I am old enough to remember when Moseywood Road was a dirt road. As a child, I knew my family was almost at the lake and ready to enjoy our summer vacation when we were on the “Bumpity Road.” It was great fun for us kids to bounce along that rutted road, but I am sure my parents were more concerned about avoiding its

Highways
10 — Lake News, August–September 2022 ruts and potholes. Route 940 runs between Hazleton and Paradise Valley for 44 miles through small towns and forested areas. It crosses the Lehigh River at White Haven and was laid out in 1927. As you head toward Lake Naomi from Blakeslee on 940, you might notice an old railroad bed crossing Pocono Lake. This was part of a series of lakes that were harvested for ice and shipped to Philadelphia by rail prior to widespread use of refrigeration. Most roads in our area weren’t paved until the 1930’s. Route 115 started out as a trail following the path of Sullivan’s March, a Revolutionary War military campaign ordered by General George Washington in 1799. In 1816 it became a private toll road known as the Easton and Wilkes-Barre Turnpike, with tollgates about every 17 miles. By 1860, with railroads becoming the preferred form of transport, it became a public road. In the future, we can expect to see more truck traffic on our roads with the new facilities being developed in our area. But it’s not all bad news new bike lanes have been painted on 115 and 940 in Blakeslee. As a matter of fact, you can bike right over to Peterson’s Ski and Cycle on one of the new bike lanes. While you are biking past, stop by and check out all of the cool souvenirs and biking gear. Or, you can check us out online at www.petersonsskiandcycle.com We hope to “ski” youFunsoon.fact: the round-trip route from Lake Harmony on Moseywood Road and 940 to Blakeslee and back by 115 and Route 903 is approximately 13 miles.

Ruth and I took the dogs on an overnight trip to the edge of one of Pennsylvania’s many little pieces of wilderness. A bit more than an hour’s drive north and west of Lake Harmony is the very sleepy community of Benton PA, which is located minutes south of Rickett’s Glen State Park. We were able to wrap up personal and newspaper commitments before making a short drive to a simple little one-bedroom cabin with a full bath, air conditioning, and internet…and accepted dogs as guests. We took our work with, wanting the change of scenery to help us get refocused. Our trip started with a bit of luck, in that we arrived in Benton just before the Colonel Ricketts Cidery there closed. We had stopped there before and enjoyed their products. There was time enough to sample, then buy some cider. Next we went off to settle in to our lodgings. After a rest, we went out to eat in the tiny, nearly forgotten town of Central. The hamlet that is there today was part of a great lumbering boom in the late 1800s that roared through that area, making Central City and Jamison City just up the road into booming cities briefly from 1889 to 1912 with over 10,000 people in the valley. During those years, most of the trees were stripped off nearby

When the trees were all cut, the boom moved west through Williamsport, and west again after that. The sawmill closed in 1912 and was dismantled its machinery shipped west to follow the last of the timber booms. It took another two years to ship out the last of the cut lumber from the mill’s huge yard. Today, there’s a bit more than 130 residents, along with a bar restaurant in Jamison and the Central Park Hotel in Central. Most area restaurants were closed that Sunday or closing early. The Central Park Hotel was one of two choices left, and it was recommended, so… why not? We arrived to find a classic three-story vintage hotel with the restaurant dining room on one side of the hotel’s staircase to its rooms, and the bar on the other. Their dining room was medium sized and featured a large taxidermy buffalo upon one wall. There was also a variety of other taxidermy birds, deer, and even a fisher (right at the front door).

The dinner was quite good. We can recommend it. I had a spicy seafood bisque and a Mediterranean swordfish salad (a filet atop of a Greek-style salad with feta), and Ruth had a large home-made crabcake. We left full and happy. A short drive later, we were in our little cabin enjoying the quiet and peace.
Monday morning, we drove to Rickett’s Glen State Park’s beach where I took a quick dip in the lake. The dogs had a chance to play in the water in a muddy area beyond the beach. We followed my swim with a short hike along the creek at the bottom of the Falls Trail, through the old growth trees. This spot is very special with huge trees hundreds of years old (saved from the logging boom by visionaries of that era). Sadly, the short walk tuckered me out, so we retreated to our cabin and enjoyed a quiet afternoon which we used to work on some pages for the newspaper we’d print on CheckoutTuesday.onTuesday was at 11, and we were back at out office just after noontime to finish that newspaper, and to do some LAKE NEWS pages as well.

I have exciting news! After over 20 years of knowing the Love of my life we are officially MARRIED. First time for both of us too. It has been so hard to keep this quiet because I’ve been extremely excited. We did not want to make a big deal about it or have a large wedding since we have been together for so long. We just had a small backyard gathering, with some immediate family that we are always with kids, granddaughters & our parents.Bobdoes NOT like being the center of attention & since my Dad didn’t like it either I understood. However I wouldn’t have minded more family but we are total opposites and I guess the saying is correct, how opposites attract. We met each other while I was helping out at the Albrightsville Post office. Bob’s sister was a carrier there at the time and she mentioned a cute girl was helping out. Well I was, years ago, anyway. Bob started helping her on her route just to meet me which was over a good 20 years ago. He might not like me mentioning this but after Bob asked me on a date and me so done with men, and me thinking sure, a free dinner won’t kill me! It turned into over 18 years of dating and 16 years of being engaged. We got married on August 12, 2022, followed by our normal vacation to the shore, except I called it our honeymoon. It feels so good to be able to announce I’m

On the front page of this issue is a photo of a group of women in 1920s bathing attire, on the lawn of the Arndt family’s cottage on Lake Harmony. The story with the photo says the cottage had no running water or electricity and was heated by a pot-bellied stove. In the 1950s, the cottage was sold to Marian and Milton Eisenhart, who installed electricity and hot air heat though the pot-bellied stove remained. It took until the 1980s to have a shower installed, outside the cottage facing the marina. Sonia, their daughter, was owner of the cottage when this story was written by Mary Farnschlader. As the story wrapped up, Sonia was planning to take the old cottage down and rebuild a modern lakefront home in its place (complete with running water, showers, bathrooms, insulation, and heat).

Initially the sanctuary was open a couple days a week then people started calling wanting to bring school classes. This was described as a “magical time” and people began to inquire about working there. All staff learn the science of butterflies and are trained to answer all questions.
Gruber’s mission is to “connect children to the natural world” as many have a “nature deficit disorder.” Approximately 2,000 children go to the sanctuary each season for a curriculum-based program.Things changed drastically during Covid. Although the facility was closed in 2020 they did curbside promotions giving out caterpillar hatching kits and future tickets to the sanctuary. During this time an Amish-built outdoor pavilion with new picnic tables was added where activities could be done. The “Fluttertarium” inside is a large room housing monarch butterflies which are flying free all over the room. Visitors have an opportunity to feed the butterflies and get up close, with the butterflies often landing on the visitors. Here are seven species of butterflies including monarchs,

painted ladies, zebra swallowtails and malachites. The butterflies are fed a mixture of sugar water and nectar, as well as Gatorade as they need electrolytes. The caterpillars are fed milk weed. In order to keep the butterflies moving the room is kept at a temperature of 70 to 72 degrees.

There are interactive shows and special programs held which can be found on the event calendar. Various programs are held at the sanctuary on ‘Super Sundays.’ The sanctuary had exotic frogs for 15 years but due to Covid they are no longer being raised. The new 4-wheel drive ambulance is due to arrive at the dealer soon, and that will start the unit on its way to Lake Harmony later this fall. Thanks to the generous donations of supporters, the LHRS has made its first payment on the unit.
More good news is that the new generator has been installed in the Rescue Squad building, so the LHRS will have electricity and heat if the power goesTheoff.’22-’23 donation letter campaign will see letters in your mailboxes here at the Lake, and at your year-round homes, in mid-September. Fundraising goals this year include money towards the next ambulance payment, as well as to pay for the costs of the new generator. The LHRS needs to buy new radios, and wants to buy a Lucas CPR Compression System for heart attack cases (improves survival significantly).
The two LHRS ambulances were out on 51 calls in July. 47 of those calls were in Lake Harmony, 3 into Penn Forest, and 1 into the White Haven area. The LHRS also turned out for twelve fire calls. The units were on the road a total of 2,835 miles, mostly using Unit 1761.

As part of public comment, a group of families who live on Laurel Lane in Albrightsville complained about being harassed by ‘squatters’ who have taken over an unbuildable property at the end of their road. These people have added sheds, a hunting stand, and an old school bus. They are out shooting guns, exploding fireworks including quarter sticks (very loud), and harassing the neighbors with ATVs and foul language. ‘It’s scary,’ shared one couple. ‘It’s getting worse,’ explained another. Police and code officials are working through the processes to take action, explained Gluck. Residents were told to keep See KIDDER, page 39

A surprise item on Kidder Township’s supervisors meeting agenda was the resignation of board chairman Thomas Bradley. The long-serving leader has been a member of the supervisors since 2006. He missed July’s meeting and his letter of resignation arrived ahead of the regular meeting on August 23. The resignation was accepted with greatKidderregret.Township residents who may be interested in filling out Bradley’s remaining term, through the end of 2023, can send a letter of interest stating qualifications and why they would be a good supervisor to township manager Suzanne Brooks, or bring it in to the municipal office. The mail address is Kidder Township, P.O. Box 576, Lake Harmony, PA 18624. Candidates will likely be considered at the September 20th regular meeting, so those interested should attend. meeting, run by vice chairman Ray Gluck, was short. Patrolman Mason Moran was approved to become full-time, starting August 21. Payments into the pension plans were authorized $152,171 for the police, and $11,735 for non-uniformed staff.

Kidder Continued from page 36
Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company chief Ralph Lennon is concerned about the low water pressure in the Split Rock water system. He has been told by residents there that the water tanks that serve that part of town are only half full. Hydrants in that area may not work when needed. Supervisors noted this, and also noted that this is within a private community, so the supervisors have limited authority. Bills of $220,139 were approved. Most of that was insurances, services and taxes, $67,811; emergency services, $47,079; trash collection, $29,401; a payment towards the new police car, $24,195; engineering fees, $11,311; and $5,995 for gasoline and diesel for the township vehicles. The rest was for services (legal, mailing, SEO), small expenses, and supplies.
The next regular meeting of Kidder supervisors is September 27, starting at 6:30 p.m.
