The addition of two dogs to our household is going to result in the subtraction of a lot of stuff. One of the dogs is a medium-sized female with a sweet, though shy, personality. She takes up very little space. The other one, though, is an 80-pound male German Shorthair pointer. He is high energy, a ton of fun, and makes some of our rooms feel rather crowded. Time to declutter—I’d rather have these new family members than stuff!

Kidder supervisors appoint Torres to Code Enforcement Officer job by Seth Isenberg
Another full house with citizens reeling off quality of life questions made August 20’s Kidder Township supervisors meeting another lively one. Citizen complaints ranged from trash and noise, to an incident with one high-occupancy property

where they ran their well dry, so brought in a water truck. Many of the answers provided by supervisors were that these are code enforcement issues, noting the position of code enforcement officer has been vacant. One of the first orders of business this night, once the audience participation wound down, was to appoint Noel Torres as the new full-time code enforcement officer. Torres, a retired NYC police detective, was selected after interviews of a total of four candidates. He is a recent appointee to the planning commission, who is also an EMT with the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad. Torres, after training, will get right out into the community. In other business, a proposed subdivision of a Lake Harmony property into four lots was tabled. See KIDDER TWP, page 7

Kidder Police, who had another very busy month, is down a patrol car. Supervisors approved buying a new 2019 Ford F-150 police
package 4x4 super crew cab from the New Holland Auto Group. It will be delivered with lights and markings, ready to go on patrol. Cost is $44,824 with CoStars pricing, financed through Mauch Chunk Trust.
The police department is enforcing a “zero tolerance” policy about noise /disturbing the peace from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Of the 255 calls for service in July, 10% were for fireworks complaints and 10% more for disturbing the peace,
followed by animal complaints – mainly about bears bothering campers late at night at Hickory Run State Park. Supervisors again offered praise to the department for the good work they are doing. Residents were also thanked for calling 911 about fireworks incidents (please continue to do so). The police department was authorized to continue with the extra weekend patrols, on overtime, through the rest of the summer. Roadwork on Kirk Street at the Post Office has started, with milling to be done this week. The big paving project for 2020, on Kresge Lane and upper Moseywood Road, was confirmed for a start after Labor Day.

Celebrate the holidays with Holiday Delights. Inspired by folk art but with a modern graphic vibe, these charming stamps will add a touch of whimsy to your holiday mailings. With a traditional palette of red, green and white, illustrator Kirsten Ulve channeled her love of Christmas, vintage ornaments and Scandinavian folk art to create unique digital illustrations of four holiday icons: a prancing reindeer with antlers; an ornament tied with a bow and ready to hang; a tree topped with a star; and a stocking holding a teddy bear and a sprig of holly. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamps.

On The Road by Seth Isenberg
August is normally a month where Ruth and I are busy going to as many events as we can fit into a summer weekend. Because of the pandemic, most of the festivals, shows and programs were cancelled — even the rodeo we’d hoped to see. One highlight of very few was the Blakeslee Rotary’s car show on Labor Day Sunday, not really a road trip. We have kept closer to home due to my uncle being in the hospital, and finally transferred to a place we can go see him, though his condition has gotten worse. On the bright side is that being close to home this summer has allowed us to come to the point where we wanted another dog or two in our house again. While we miss our Chess, our English pointer, who was with us for 11 years, we also were ready for someone new after over a year with no dog. On a recent summer’s weekend, we dined with a friend on the patio beside the lake at Nick’s Lake
House, where we sat near a couple with a basset hound mix lying at their feet. We’d like to do that again. Ruth and I continue to dine out, supporting our local restaurants as they battle COVID restrictions. The good news is that, as of the 21st, See ON THE ROAD, page 22

restaurants can expand their indoor seating to 50% capacity — timely ahead of any fall chill heading our way. Friends had started a search for us. One set found for us a distinguished-looking Schnauzer mix to keep us company. She was rescued from a farm down south pregnant, had her puppies, and now was ready for a good home. After a couple of weeks, this dog that we’ve named Spookie is slowly coming around to the idea of a safe, warm place, regular meals, and soft touches, dog parks and more. Just after Labor Day week, another of our friends reached out to see if we still wanted a dog. Learning that we already had one, they asked about taking on another. We have had male and female Labrador mixes for many years, a big boy and a little girl, both before Chess’ time. We agreed to take a look. He is a 7 year-old pointer who had just been given up by a caring family who had spoiled him. He’s big — bigger than our largest Labrador had
been — 80 pounds and over 2 and a half feet tall. We shortened his name to Bull, as an homage to the bailiff in the old Night Court comedy series. Bull has been a gentle and fun boy who is good in the car, and good with Spookie, who seems to be happier with another dog as company. We are taking this day by day with both of them, and so far have been rewarded with goofy antics and surprise dog kisses. A possible road trip for a full day of fun is at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Mt. Hope, near Lebanon, PA. It’s open weekends, available to people who buy tickets in advance, with limits to attendance. We like to go when the temperature is cooler, so we can see people dress up in period garb. Another road trip for certain, because we can take the dogs, will be a tour of area apple orchards — with the hopes of finding some local Stayman Winesap apples, and some tart cider. Looking further ahead, we will also be counting the days until we can road trip on Saturdays, with the Penn State football game on the radio, perhaps out admiring beautiful fall foliage. Here’s to a beautiful month — and good health to you all.

Building a new life in the Poconos Fueled by a pandemic-provoked mass exodus from Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey, plus unprecedented low interest rates, buyers seeking a Pocono Mountains refuge have turned to building a home as the solution for their choice for relocation. As an exhausted MLS inventory of homes for sale has persuaded purchasers to consider creating their own custom living space, their thoughts turn to how to build a fulfilling new life here in the Poconos. How to accommodate the new world order of working remotely, with commuting no longer an obstacle to relocating, is an increased expectation. From constructing noise nuisance seclusion, to a “build right now, save later” outlook on energy efficient utility options with a healthy home, future homeowners understand the value of constructing a new home with today’s technologies. Explaining the EPA Indoor Air Quality and Zero Energy outlook on healthy homes, Liberty Homes Custom Builders’ John Holahan shares their approach to ensuring the value of a buyer’s investment year round. lation kept everyone confined, he notes that even before COVID we spent 80% of our time indoors. He explains the benefits of Liberty standards saying, “The savings come in the operation of it, the wellbeing of the occupants from living in it,” adding, “Insulation and sealed windowpanes play a part, plus the right HVAC system serves a positive purpose, as well as mechanical ventilation to keep fresh air in and stale air out.” As bidding wars continue to elevate existing home prices, potential buyers should consider looking into building new — the option that comes custom without compromise. According to Holahan, “There are several very good builders in our area, and we are here to help.” See Liberty land and home package prices and designs like the Sagewood below at LibertyHomes PA.com

Volunteer project tackles stormwater The Kidder Township Environmental Advisory Council would like to acknowledge and applaud the recent efforts of the Lake Harmony Group and the Lake Harmony stormwater members for their work in abating and controlling stormwater in Lake Harmony. The recent project in the Lake Harmony district will serve to minimize soil erosion and improve water quality in the lake. Frank Gilotti, Jr., president of the EAC, issued this memo of thanks to the Kidder Township Board of Supervisors. The township-owned lot on North Lake Drive has been a source of runoff for many years, and was one of a number of potential projects identified by the township engineers for remediation in a recent study. Volunteers worked to install the geotextile fabric and riprap, which extends up the rise and through the trees to the source of the water. With the recent heavy rains, the work has been tested and found to work as designed. LN: Ruth Isenberg

Litter efforts continue yielding impressive results in the Poconos — help is needed
The 3rd annual Pick Up the Poconos Day will be held on Saturday, September 26. Originally launched in Monroe County, this year the event is being expanded to Wayne, Pike and Carbon counties. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up online to select the specific county and area they would like to clean. Thanks to PennDOT and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau (PMVB) provides supplies including gloves, bags and trash grabbers. The volunteer signup deadline for Pick Up the Poconos Day was Saturday, September 12, but it’s not too late to be part of the effort. “Since Pick Up the Poconos Day began, nearly 700 volunteers have removed 1,500 bags of trash from our roads,” said Chris Barrett, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau President/CEO. “In a time when social distancing is important, this is a great way to make a positive impact in your community while enjoying the open-air with family and friends.”
Another anti-littering effort, Pocono 3C, is getting ready to relaunch after being sidelined for months due to COVID-19. The unique program employs homeless and at-risk individuals to remove litter year-round from major and side roads. Since its inception last summer, Pocono 3C has helped 25 homeless individuals secure housing, while crews have removed more than 5,100 bags of trash from 261 miles of roadway. The PMVB also recognizes that municipalities are dealing with overcrowding and trash issues, which have worsened in recent months. In an effort to keep our communities clean, PMVB staff teamed up with Smithfield Township earlier this summer to clean Minisink and River’s Edge Parks. “We thank the wonderful group of enthusiastic, dedicated folks that cleaned two of our parks after a hectic and messy weekend,” said Brian Barrett, Smithfield Township Supervisor. “These efforts allowed us to reopen the parks for the public to use in a safe, clean environment.”

This Month’s Cover
Here is a photo from Strauss Cottage (now 128 S Lake Drive — the green and white house). This house was actually in the background on the August cover perspective. Built in 1914, we always wonder what it would be like to have a time lapse of sunsets from the porch all those years. George Kaiser, Allentown businessman, built the house and it was sold about 10 years later to Martin Strauss, a wholesale grocer and Allentown businessman. It’s reported by lake historians Kaiser was the first to travel here in a car. Since the 1930s, the house has been maintained by heirs of the Strauss family and is currently owned by the Mayer and Long families. Andrew Lutz-Long sent us this current-day sunset photo. He is Director of Music Ministries at Trinity Lutheran Church, Perkasie, and a frequent visitor at The Lake.

On the front page is a photo of a bear cub, submitted by Frank Jackson. Kidder Township supervisors appointed Frank Jackson as the new chief of police for the township at their July meeting. He started August 7, with a two-year contract. He has 23 years of varied police experience with the Philadelphia Police Department. Frank has vacationed in this area since
1958. With his wife, Jean, they became permanent residents six years ago with a home beside the Split Rock Country Club. During his two years, he hopes to see promotions within the department, including his replacement. “Lake News wishes him the best of luck in his new position.” The Lake Harmony Ambulance and Rescue Squad was holding a community dinner the afternoon of August 27 on the beach at Nick’s Lake House. It will be a buffet, with beer and soda included, with live entertainment. Cost is $15 per person. Congratulations to 10 year-old Jamie Jones of Lake Harmony, who was recognized for collecting aluminum pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia. She has been collecting the tabs for three years, delivering them to Ralph Lennon who then takes the tabs to Philadelphia where the Ronald McDonald House sells them for their recycle value. She began collecting tabs as a second grade school project, then continued the project herself as she moved on to the next grade, and the next. “She has been able to accumulate many, many pounds” over these years.
