Season of Thanks

October into November can be a sad time.

As I write this, heavy rains are bringing down the autumn leaves—leaves that because of unseasonably warm weather didn’t seem as vibrant as usual this year. It’s colder, and soon Daylight Saving will end, and it will be darker earlier.

Still, there’ s a lot of light and a lot of fun to be had at this time of year. Halloween decorations light our roads, and kids in costume make us smile. And how can a holiday that involves handing out candy be anything but joyful?

Election Day should make us grateful we live in a country where we get to choose our own leaders.

We may not enjoy political activity, but without it, we’d have far less influence on what happens to us.

And at least the posters are colorful.

Next comes Veterans Day, an opportunity to express thanks to those men and women who have given of their time by serving in the armed forces.

Whether their service covered wartime or peace, they spent years, in some cases decades, making our country safer and better.

Finally, there’s Thanksgiving, with blessings galore to count. Despite Covid, despite supply chain shortages, we have much to be grateful for.

Kidder Township Supervisor meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at the township building, and unless otherwise noted, begin at 6:30 PM. Notices of special meetings are posted at the township building and advertised. Postal pride 10 facts about USPS How much do you know about the Postal Service and its employees?

Here are 10 fun facts about the Postal Service, courtesy of usps. com’s Postal Facts section.

1. The Postal Service’s reach can’t be beat. USPS is the only organization in the nation that has the resources, network infrastructure and logistical capability to regularly deliver to every residential and business address in the nation.

2. It’s a bargain. A letter can be sent across the United States — from Honolulu, HI, to Bangor, ME, say — for just 58 cents.

3. It collaborates with competitors. UPS and FedEx pay the Postal Service to deliver hundreds of millions of their ground packages, and USPS pays UPS and FedEx for air transportation.

4. It boasts the nation’s largest retail network. With 31,000 outlets, USPS has the largest retail network in the nation — bigger than Starbucks, McDonald’s or Walmart.

5. It’s eco-conscious. There is an entire department devoted to reducing the

Postal Service’s carbon footprint in ways large and small. One recent move is the adoption of next-generation delivery vehicles, which will substantially increase the fuel efficiency of the USPS fleet.

6. It’s filled with everyday heroes. Postal workers regularly go above and beyond the call of duty to protect their customers, including older and disabled

customers through the Carrier Alert Program.

In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2020, the Postal Service recognized 186 heroic employees.

7. It supports communities nationwide. Among its initiatives: educating customers on consumer protection, delivering holiday magic to those in need and helping with Stamp Out

Hunger, the nation’s largest one-day food drive.

8. Bad handwriting is no match for its code crackers. The Remote Encoding Center in Salt Lake City gets the mail that automated sorters can’t decipher. The center’s 1,000 workers translate chicken scratch in about 3.5 seconds, on average.

The Postal Service’s new Day of the Dead stamps were dedicated Sept. 30 at the El Paso Museum of Art in Texas.

Dia de los Muertos, as the holiday is called in Spanish, is celebrated Nov. 1-2, straddling the Roman Catholic feast days of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, respectively. It is an exuberant mashup of these holy days and millennia-old Indigenous Mexican traditions.

“In recent decades, Day of the Dead has caught on in the United States as a festive celebration for all ages,” said Michael J. Elston, secretary of the USPS Board of Governors, who served as the dedicating official.

The stamps are “a wonderful way to commemorate this colorful and life-affirming holiday,” he said.

The celebration — despite what can seem like ghoulish imagery, it is a joyful, festive occasion — centers around the idea that the spirits of the departed return to the land of the living every year during this brief window. placed on altars bedecked with marigolds and crafts to lure them.

Decorated skulls, or calaveras, often made of sugar, are perhaps the most recognizable symbol of the holiday. Each of the four stamps features one, together forming a family: a mustachioed father, a mother with curls, a daughter with her hair in a bow, and another child.

Day of the Dead rose in prominence in the United States in the 1970s, when Chicano artists embraced the holiday as a means of venerating their heritage, uniting the Latin American community and educating the general public.

Today, celebrations are held nationwide, with skeleton costumes, face painting, music, special food and craft workshops.

The Forever stamps, available in panes of 20 at Post Offices and usps.com, were designed and illustrated by Luis Fitch. Antonio Alcalá provided the art direction.

Time-Limited Price Change The Postal Service is implementing a time-limited price increase that affect Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, First-Class Package Service, Parcel Select, USPS Retail Ground and Parcel Return Service from October 3 until December 26, 2021.

International products will not be affected.

This temporary price bump would go into effect at 12 a.m. Central time, October 3, and end at 12 a.m. Central time, December 26, at which point prices would revert to 2021 prices.

These temporary rates will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with the revenue to cover extra costs in anticipation of peak-season volume surges similar to levels experienced in 2020.

The temporary pricing adjustments are consistent with the pricing initiatives under “Delivering for America,” the Postal Service’s 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence.

New stamps Designs highlight Santa, river otter

Message Monsters, the Postal Service’s most playful, customizable Forever stamp design ever, was released Sept. 24.

The pane of 20 stamps features four monster illustrations that can be dressed up with dozens of self-adhesive accessories on the selvage.

The accoutrements include cartoony voice balloons and thought bubbles with exclamations and salutations, hats and crowns, hearts, stars, daisies and other fun flair.

Antonio Alcalá designed the pane with original artwork by Elise Gravel, author and illustrator of popular children’s books.

The stamps will be available at Post Offices and usps.com.

The Postal Service has announced two additions to its 2021 stamp lineup.

The first is Otters in Snow, a booklet of 20 stamps featuring four scenes of the alert and playful North American river otter reveling in a winter landscape.

The original illustrations were rendered in pen and ink, with watercolor in shades of brown for the otters, using black for facial features and crosshatching. The wintry background is white, with blue water, light blue and violet shadows, and black crosshatching.

Kidder Supers table proposed warehouse to get more details

Final approval of the proposed warehouse by Richard Henry Partners, in eastern Kidder Township on Route 940, was tabled by Kidder Township supervisors at their October 21 meeting.

Supervisors want to see the sewage planning module ahead of voting on the project and its 739,050 square foot building forward. The developer had hoped to start work at the site this month, and that will have to wait.

Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company chief Ralph Lennon is continuing his efforts to get a better radio signal into the LHVFC fire station. He met with state representative Doyle Heffley and Carbon County Commissioners on the matter. He also pointed to signal/reception problems that occur in various places around the township, which affects safety during responses.

Carbon County commissioner Chris Lukasevich attended this meeting with Dimmick Memorial Library board member Kara Edmonds. The Dimmick has a branch library in Albrightsville.

Lukasevich, also on the Dimmick board, introduced Edmonds, who spoke about the libraries’ benefits to the area. Patrons can access library

materials from across the county, and the state.

Continued from page 16 Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Companies (AVFC) have asked for funding of new fire apparatus. The plan is to approve the change in November to aid both companies with their intended purchases.

Both fire companies submitted letters about their funding requests for equipment, with Albrightsville seeking $1,474,600 for the two trucks they need, and LHVFC $836,422 for its one truck. AVFC is selling four older trucks to raise money towards the purchases.

Also approved to be advertised is a change in the Certificate of Occupancy ordinance to include long term rentals, boarding homes and group homes.

Roadmaster/supervisor Bruce Berger reported that pipes and inlets have not arrived for the North Lake Drive paving project, so it will need to be put off until spring.

Chief of police Matt Kuzma reported that police were hired for extra security in the evening for a large group renting Split Rock Resort Oct. 22 to 24. He shared that the FAA has approved the See KIDDER, page 18

Continued from page 17 department’s drone program. The department received its newest vehicle and now has four units on the road.

Bills of $302,545 were approved. The largest part of this was $152,104 towards the police pension plan, plus another $7,386 in other police pension items, and $9,345 into the non-uniformed pension fund. There was also $17,660 in federal taxes paid, and both fire companies received $11,552 as a pass-through from the PA foreign casualty tax. County Waste was paid $28,599 for their work in October. Kirk Summa was paid $8,700 for auditing services.

Budget workshops are being conducted to establish the 2022 numbers. The meetings are open to the public.

The Planning Commission voted to recommend final approval to the Richard Henry partners warehouse project, conditioned on getting all outside agency approvals that are needed. (As noted above, supervisors tabled this to get more information.)

Mora Solar’s proposed solar farm project was presented to the Planning Commission, with action tabled for more information.

A property on Big Pine Drive in Holiday Pocono was added back to the tax rolls, having been bought off the county tax claim list by a Brooklyn,

NY man.

Sewage Enforcement Officer Robert Fugate issued two new permits for systems, plus for a renewal and a repair in September.

Code Enforcement Officer Noel Torres was busy in September, with 19 inspections for accumulation of trash, 19 for other violations, 9 for high grass and weeds, 7 for tree preservation and 38 inspections of waste storage containers. Of all this, he issued one ticket for an accumulation of trash.

The next regular meeting of Kidder Township’s supervisors is Thursday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal building in Lake Harmony.

On the Road One of our road trips last month was to the Bloomsburg Fair on a Thursday night. We chose to attend the Fair after work and at night to avoid any big crowds. Our drive west along Route 80 that evening included the beautiful colors of the sunset.

I have a friend who tells me he has great parking karma. In a tribute to him, we found an open parking space in a backyard within 50 feet of the middle gate that we intended to use. We like Gate 11 because once you are inside, you are two minutes to the junction where you could go south past the cider mill and exhibits down there, or west toward some of our favorite food vendors, and the row of Fair display buildings. Simply, it avoids about ¾ of a mile of walking.

Our first stop was into the Agriculture building, in search of this year’s Great Pumpkin. This year’s biggies were 1,350 pounds for the pumpkin, and 536 pounds for the biggest squash. There were also all the entries for the plants and produce, cakes, pies and jams. It was fun to browse, and at the far end we were rewarded with the display of giant pumpkins and even a giant squash. That building also gave us a chance to buy some local honey and local maple syrup from vendors. We now have enough for the winter.

(This was our dinner.) Then properly fortified, we headed into the building that displayed some of the skills items, from photography and painting, to crocheting and quilting. There was some beautiful stuff in there.

It was getting a bit cool, and so we chose to wrap up our visit by getting a gallon of fresh-pressed cider from the Benton Cider Mill before carrying our purchases out for the very short walk to our car. It was good to be back at the Fair.

There was a forced road trip that Saturday to the Apple Store in Whitehall. Our bookkeeping computer’s screen went on the fritz. We brought it down and scheduled a repair with a promise of having it done in about a week. That done, we drove to the Allentown Farmer’s Market and did some shopping, including buying items for a picnic lunch, which we See ON THE ROAD, page 21

then had under a tree in a quiet corner of the Fairgrounds, then headed home (under an hour).

The next weekend was The Covered Bridge Festival, also at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. We had a quiet Sunday, so made the trip to the Festival to browse. We found goats’ wool socks for Ruth from the farmer, handmade earrings, honey hand lotion and a holiday ornament made out of feathers. Our trip reminded us of the longtime crafts show that was held at Jack Frost. I am hoping that Vail Resorts might return to having concerts and shows here. I forgot how I’ve missed the crafts show.

The WBS Penguins AHL hockey season has us making the short trip to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre for home games. We are both hockey fans, so we go for the show, but also are Penguins fans so we cheer for the team. If you have never attended a WBS Penguins game and would like to try coming to a game, reach out to us here at LAKE NEWS as we can access some tickets.

On the Road in November includes some visits to family, and Thanksgiving with relatives out of state. Even with the high gasoline prices, we are keen on these longer trips.

Monies raised via sales of mugs, t-shirts, cakes and the 50/50 and other raffles had been put aside towards the new truck. New ambulance volunteers are needed, and welcome.

Thanks to everyone who helped out at the 14th Boat Regatta on August 26. Lake Harmony Concerned Citizens and the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Co. asked LAKE NEWS to pass along their heartfelt thanks for the generous contribution from the money raised. (Thanks to Anne Martino, Frank Pieri and Tom Branoff for a job well done.)

After 18 years, Bob Hewitt is resigning as treasurer of the Lake Harmony Association, effective 10/21/01. Bob has done “such a fabulous job for the last 18 years.” Fred Walters will assume the treasurer’s duties.

Eighteen Lake Harmony Association members turned up for a last-minute call for a clean-up of the road into Lake Harmony on August 22 from Route 903 to the Split Rock gate. The idea was to make the road “look spiffy” on Aug. 25 for the parade. Immediately following the clean-up, the group gathered at the fire house for pizza and beverages generously provided by Bob Smith, and an ice cream cake supplied by Lou Montanaro.

Fourteen members turned out on Sept. 12 for the last scheduled clean-up.

Bach and Handel Chorale rehearsals resume The Bach and Handel Chorale has resumed rehearsals on Monday evenings in preparation for their annual Christmas Concerts. Rehearsals are held in the auditorium located on the bottom floor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 319 South Avenue in the heights of Jim Thorpe. Rehearsals are from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Randall Douglas Perry, Artistic Director and Conductor, will rehearse and conduct the chorale through its 37th season with concerts spanning the Advent and Christmas seasons. New members are welcome to attend rehearsals and then complete a short audition for membership.

Fire and Ambulance Reports The Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company responded to 43 calls in September. There was an assist to police regarding a bomb scare, a building fire, a highway vehicle fire and a cooking fire.

There were two reported gas leaks, and four EMS calls. Five vehicle accidents, seven calls to assist police, eight calls on alarm system soundings, and nine on smoke detector activations at township resorts.

The company conducted regular training sessions, and work details.

The Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company and its sister station in Tannery responded to 41 calls in September. Nineteen of those were with the LHVFC, along with twelve QRS Medical Assists, three pumping details, two fire police requests, and one each of an vehicle accident, a vehicle fire, trees down, and a search and rescue. The company also assisted Kidder Police during the bomb scare.

The company conducted regular training, fundraising events and work days.

The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad had a busy September, with 39 calls – ten more than in Sept. of 2020. The LHRS has 42 more calls this year

than at this point last year. Most of the calls this month were in Lake Harmony, with the rest in Penn Forest Twp. The two ambulances were out 2,442 miles, with #1760’s mileage at 82,222 and #1761 at 48,777. The LHRS is starting to look for a new ambulance, or a new frame with four-wheel drive to handle severe weather conditions.

The Octurbofest Car Show at The Hangout at the Turnpike raised $1,400 for the LHRS. The event will return next October.

The LHRS, with the help of LAKE NEWS, sent a fundraising letter out late this summer. Donations continue to come in. If you did not receive your letter, please contact the LHRS at P.O. Box 564, Lake Harmony, 18624 – or better than that, send a check. Funds are going into the account towards either the new 4WD frame, or a new ambulance.

Kidder Planners hear about solar farm plans, new PRD

by Seth Isenberg A solar farm, a high end planned community and the next warehouse for the township were on the agenda when the Kidder Township Planning Commission met for their October meeting.

Review of the final lot improvement and land development plans for the Richard Henry & Sons LLC. Warehouse was thorough, and somewhat heated due to neighboring property owner Jack Kalins’ objections. Kalins’ concerns were that the project will be “ugly” due to an insufficient buffering of trees, and that trucks will affect his properties, which are across Route 940. There was also the concern that trucks will get stuck on the hill in bad winter weather.

Kalins was invited to attend the supervisors meeting when the proposal will next be discussed.

Representatives for the developer explained that they were seeking preliminary final

approval, pending approvals from all agencies involved (DEP, PennDOT, etc.). After discussion, the project was given conditional preliminary approval by the Planning Commission, with a list of conditions.

Remarks include hopes that the project will support the local fire and ambulance companies.

The Graystone Preserve was introduced. The 3,798 acre property is located at the edge of Hickory Run State Park east of Albrightsville — with about 2,500 acres in Kidder Township and the rest in Penn Forest. It has a new owner, who seeks to create a property owners association to manage the Preserve, which has hosted a hunting and fishing club since 1936.

The plan for the Graystone Preserve is to offer 70 large lots to buyers, who will also become part owners of the Preserve. Most lots will be over 12 acres, and a few would be three acres. The See PLANNERS, page 33

Continued from page 32 developer hopes to sell 58 lots, and leave the balance for the P.O.A. to sell or keep. Most of the land would be preserved. The property has 10 miles of trails, and would add a clubhouse, gun club, a flower and vegetable farm, a pool, game room and fitness center.

The presentation, which included a video, was well received. Discussion centered around fire protection within the property. The owners are proposing “several 20,000 gallon water tanks.” No action was taken.

The Mora Solar farm project was next up, also as an introduction. The large solar farm, on about 700 acres west of Lake Harmony, is tucked deep in the woods south of Interstate 80 by Hickory Run State Park on land owned by Blue Ridge Real Estate.

Solar panels would be spread around the property while protecting wetlands on the site. Electricity would flow via the existing transmission line into the substation at Big Boulder. A road already exists into the property. Once approvals are given, construction is projected to start in 2024.

When operations start, the project will have a 20 year lifespan. When the lifespan is complete, the developers will remove the panels and bases, then reforest the site.

There were discussions about a change in zoning for the solar farm. Firm ideas on what to ask for within any zoning change are still being developed.

Planners are leaning to having a solar farm be an approved use, requiring the granting of a waiver for properties of 1,000 acres or greater.

The Mora Solar project will remain on the agenda for the next Planning Commission meeting.
