Getting Ready

The ski area is getting ready for another season of snow and snow sports.

Other businesses around The Lake are making their own adjustments. Restaurant patios are still open, but not used as late into the evening any more. Heat lamps and storm windows are going up.

Residents are readying their properties for winter. There’s a lot leaf raking going on.

While most places sport autumn or Halloween decorations right now, winter and holiday looks will be coming soon.

Daylight Saving is nearly at an end. It’s now dark before 7, so in two weeks, sunsets will be by 6 p.m.

Deer are everywhere just ahead of hunting season, and they seem to be grazing heavily, trying to fatten up before the snow and frost cover all the remaining greenery.

We’re all getting ready for winter. But no need to hibernate, there’s lots of outdoors fun ahead. We’re ready for whatever weather we get, prepared to have a good time!

KIDDER TOWNSHIP MEETINGS

Kidder Township Supervisor meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the township building, and unless otherwise noted, begin at 6:30 PM. Notices of special meetings are posted at the township building and advertised. Planning meetings are held the 1st Wednesday at 6 PM; Zoning meetings, the last Monday at 6 PM; EAC, the second Wednesday at 7 PM. The public is welcome. For people who want to own a historic piece of skiing memorabilia, the sale of ski lift chairs at Jack Frost and Big Boulder (JFBB) was an opportunity not to be missed.

In December of 2021 an announcement was made, that between the two ski areas, there would be an upgrade of five new chairlifts. At Big Boulder, Merry Widow double chair lifts I and II, and Edelweiss triple chair lift are replaced with four-person quads. At Jack Frost, three new fixed grip quads replace East 1 & 2 doubles, B & C lifts, and E & F lifts.

The new chairlifts are expected to improve safety and reduce wait time in the lift lines. In addition to the benefits of new chair lifts, there are the addition of four new trails at Big Boulder this season. According to General Manager Trent Poole: “Two of the trails will be skiways to the left and right of the new lift, one will be a new groomed intermediate trail and then another that will run under the old Merry Widow lift line.”

But what to do with all the lift chairs from the now defunct systems? JFBB decided to sell them at the reduced price of $150 per chair to employees before making them available to the public through online auction on September 9. Once the JFBB team members staked their claims, chairs were sold for prices that ranged from $200 to $425, with all proceeds going to benefit the Epic Promise See TAKE A SEAT, page 10

Foundation, Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company, and the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad in equal measure.

The proud, new owners of local history were allotted two weekends to collect the chairs. People picking up chairs had to be ready to haul an item that weighs anywhere from 150-200 pounds, around 8 feet tall and 4 to 5+ feet wide. Everyone who picked up a chair used either a pickup truck or a trailer and were required to bring someone to help them to help take it out of the ski area.

You will be able to find one of these historic lift chairs at Peterson’s Ski and Cycle this ski season.

Our chair is from one of the Merry Widow lifts at Big Boulder. I remember when you had to take a T-Bar to get up to the top of Merry Widow ski slope. I thought it was fun, almost like doubling your ski time, since you had to ride up on your skis, then ski down. You could also get off the T-Bar halfway if you didn’t want to go all the way to the top. But progress is good, and the double chair lifts that replaced the T-Bar meant you didn’t have to wait as long to get in your next run. Now it will be even better.

I can’t wait to check out the improvements at JFBB, and ski season is around the corner. At Peterson’s Ski and Cycle, the shop is undergoing transformation from being primarily a bike shop to a ski shop. We invite you to stop by PSC and say hello — we’re next to Wawa in Blakeslee.

On the Road This is the most beautiful time of the year in and around Lake Harmony. The only rival to it would be a clear sunny day after a freshly fallen snow… but that’s a morning here, and a day there (and besides, winter can wait).

The spectacle of the turning leaves has been on full show through the month, and now we can appreciate individual trees as they hold on to their leaves against the odds. My favorite thing about the end of foliage is a bright sunset, highlighting the rich maroons and browns if the light falls just right. Second to that is taking a walk into the woods upon a bed of freshly fallen leaves.

It’s also time for raking.

We are taking some leaf-peeping rides around the western Poconos, and now into the Lehigh Valley. The Turnpike south from here had some remarkable color (worth the price of admission), and one of the best shows was down Route 903 from Lake Harmony to Jim Thorpe, then out towards Summit Hill and then left towards Andreas.

As for a day trip, Ruth and I had been looking for a weekend that would be cool enough to attend the PA Renaissance Faire. In June we attended the Celtic Fling at the ‘shire’ when temperatures

AUTUMN AT THE PA RENAISSANCE FAIRE LN: Seth Isenberg reached the 90s. That day of fun nearly put me in their medical tent. The day we went had temperatures in the high 60s, which as a bonus meant many people wore their faire finery. A double bonus is that the faire shifts to a Halloween theme, so there were Halloween costumes galore as well. We dressed as middle aged festivalgoers, complete with our silly sunhats.

Arriving early, we were on the benches for the start of the Boars Head Brawl, a bit of a farce including sword fighting, name-calling, silliness and cast members falling off the second-floo balcony, one into a pool. From there to Sirens (singing), from Sirens to sword-fighting, and then to a condensed Much Ado About Nothing where the cast put on a serviceable Shakespeare.

Our next entertainment stop turned out to be an adult-themed (bawdy) drag beauty pageant and roast, which was roaringly funny. When that See ON THE ROAD, page 13

ended, we headed for the mid-day Revels show at the Globe Theatre. Taking a break, I discovered their new Mermaid Tank, which was a great big hit with the little kids. Tiring now, I went towards the exit but was lured to a site that promised a real unicorn. Ruth joined me, and soon the ‘unicorn’ appeared with its handlers. It’s a therapy animal, and a fun display for kids and kids at heart. The PA Renaissance Faire will return for weekends next August through October.

Also On the Road, last month we attended the Bloomsburg Fair with friends and returned to the fairgrounds a couple of weeks later for the Covered Bridge Crafts Festival. It was a short ride west on Interstate 80 for hours of fun.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have started their season. We are long-time fans and have seen two home games so far in this young season. The Penguins have a very talented team this year, so expect quality hockey. It’s about a 40-minute ride from the Lake to the arena parking lot via Route 115 and then around the Wyoming Valley Mall. There are good deals on ticket packages, or for a single game, try a Fan Friday where tickets start at $17.

Wrapping up, here’s to all fans of the Philadelphia Phillies, who surprised most baseball fans by earning the National League Pennant. The World Series versus the Houston Astros should be fun – Go Phillies.

Train Meet scheduled The Carbon Model Railroad Society is sponsoring its Fall Train Meet on Sunday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Diamond Fire Co. Bingo Hall at 120 Main St., Walnutport. This is a model railroad, toy train and railroadiania sale for the serious and amateur railroad and model train collectors.

Refreshments will be available, and there is plenty of free parking.

If you’re hitting the road this year, there’s a chance you might find lodging in a once bustling Post Offic The latest conversion is the Old Post Office Washington, DC. The building, owned by the federal government and managed by the General Services Administration, formerly housed the Trump International Hotel and was recently reopened as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Hilton Worldwide, based in McLean, VA, manages the hotel, which offer 263 rooms, Michelinstarred dining and a spa.

Also referred to as the Old Post Offic Pavilion, the building — completed in 1899 — was a Post Offic until 1914. Torres fills acant Kidder Supervisor seat

by Seth Isenberg At their regular monthly meeting on September 27, Kidder Township supervisors put off a vote to fill the vacant supervisor’s seat for a couple of

weeks, setting a special meeting on October 11.

Five township residents had been interviewed, Ralph Lennon, Karen Barni, Jeffrey Lutz, Kenneth Pliska and Noel Torres. With such an impressive list, supervisors tabled the decision to the 11th and then made short work of the night’s business.

Approved were the Thornton reverse subdivision with its maintenance agreement for Polansky Lane, the Cypress Creek Renewables solar farm condition use, and Figura’s lot line revision.

The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad’s request for $20,445 from the ambulance equipment fund to pay for four new radios was approved. Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company was approved to apply for an LSA Gaming Grant. Supervisors accepted the amendment to the local tax collection law to implement Act 57 which allows officials to waiv tax penalties under certain conditions.

Patrolman Christopher Ritter was welcomed as a full-time officer effective Sept. 6 when he comp ed his probationary period.

Signal Services, who maintain the township’s traffic signals, was renewed for a two-year c tract.

Two properties in Golden Oaks and two more in Holiday Poconos were bought off tax claims and returned to the tax rolls.

and that a tree trimming contractor has stepped up to offer hourly services. For the past two years, the township had no bidders for a contract to trim trees along the township roads. This company has offered to begin that long-delayed work.

In public participation, a citizen reported that the problem property on Laurel Lane is ‘starting to comply’ with efforts clean up the property and stop visitors to it from harassing the neighbors. Citizen Jim Lachette complained about speeding and stop sign violations in Tannery, and at the I-80 ramps.

He also wants police to enforce the No Parking area by Wawa.

At the special meeting on October 11, supervisors voted unanimously to name Noel Torres to fill the vacant seat on the board of supervisors. Torres, who serves on the planning commission, is also the township Vacancy Board chairman, a township code enforcement officer, and volunteers fo the Lake Harmony Fire Company and the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad. He is a New York City police force retiree.

A reorganization of supervisors followed, with Torres’ first vote to join unanimously with Bruce Berger, Louis Pantages, and Wilson Klotzman in

LN: Seth Isenberg electing Ray Gluck as chairman. Gluck has served as supervisor many times, but this is his first time as chairman.

Klotzman was voted in as vice chairman and chair of the police committee, again unanimously.

Torres’ appointment creates a vacancy of the Vacancy Board chairman. There is also a vacancy in the Zoning Hearing Board as realtor Jason Seitz stepped down. He has sold his home and moved out of the township. Letters of interest are being accepted to fill these positions.

Code Enforcement Kidder Township’s code enforcement officers Noel Torres and Andrew Ray, reported 166 calls in August. 59 were for rubbish accumulating around properties, 23 were for not using proper waste containers, five were for high grass/weeds, two were about abandoned or unregistered vehicles, one was about animal waste issues, and seven were for appliance(s) or furniture sitting outside. All were resolved without a citation except the abandoned vehicles and two of the appliances/furniture.

Those got a write up.

There were 40 ‘other’ violations investigated and resolved.

Torres and Ray conducted nine home inspections, and made 20 visits regarding a tree permit.

Trick or Treat

Kidder Township residents near Lake Harmony can sign up for trick or treating in Lake Harmony on October 29 from 1 to no later than 9. Families must sign up by calling 570 510-1335 by the 27th.

Finnegan’s Wake took place at Murphy’s Loft on Sept. 16. Mike Donnelly did a great job playing Finnegan, rising from the coffin to the deligh of the crowd of onlookers and “mourners.” The bartenders and waitresses kept pace with the demands of the thirsty and hungry patrons. It was a great afternoon, with proceeds benefitting the Tunkhannock Township Fire Company.

The Lake Harmony Watershed Preservation Group is sponsoring a wine pairing dinner at Sunset Green on October 20 with proceeds going to “Save the Lake.”

The evening of October 10 is a fire safety open house at the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company. Learn about various aspects of fire safety. Learn how and when to use a fir extinguisher, how to deal with a stove fire, and other life and property saving techniques.

Volunteers of the Penn-Kidder Library Center held a gently used book sale over Labor Day weekend, and a Fall Festival at Pine Point Plaza on October 6 and 7. The PKLC is more than half way towards its initial goal of raising $40,000.

The Penn-Kidder Seniors will be going to the Pennsylvania Opry for a Country Gospel Christmas Show on November 14. Seniors also have a trip to see NOAH at the Sight & Sound on May 21. Tickets are $85. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. sharp. ** ** Get your 2012 Carbon County Dog Licenses at the Carbon County Treasurer’s office. Application are at the Kidder Township Office Carrigan’s Country Pharmacy celebrated their new store in the Pine Point Plaza in Albrightsville with a ribbon cutting on September 12. Carrigan’s has been a favorite Carbon County business for 25 years, relocation their store earlier in 2012.

Fire Company reports for August Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company was called out 48 times in August, with 11 EMS responses, 10 fire alarm soundings, seven smoke detector alerts (no fire), five dispatches with recall three assists to police or other govt. agency, two structure fires, and one each of a passenger car fire, a grass fire, a trash fire (outside), a power li down, a gas leak, a CO detector activation and a public service detail.

Three of the calls were in Albrightsville, one in Penn Forest Township, and the rest in Lake Harmony.

Twelve of the smoke detector-related calls were at the Split Rock Resort.

Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company was called out 30 times in August, 22 of those as mutual aid with Lake Harmony VFC and most of those were calls on smoke detectors in the Mountain Laurel or Split Rock resorts. The AVFC was out four times for QRS medical calls, twice for structure fires, and once each a search and rescue in Holiday Pocono, a mutual aid call to Penn Forest Twp., and a call onto the Turnpike about a tree that fell onto the road.

Both fire companies continue extensive training.

Volunteers are welcome at any time, especially for fire fighters but also for company operations an fundraising.

The LHVFC holds its toy drive for families using the local Ronald McDonald House. New toys can be dropped off at the Fire House on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 to noon, and also at the township building during regular township office hours

Kidder Police Report for August 2022 Kidder Township Police responded to 196 calls for service in August.

Topping the list were 21 calls for disturbing the peace/disorderly conduct, 11 for fights & disputes, 5 domestics, 4 harassments and 3 fireworks co plaints. There were 17 animal complaints, 2 about stray animals, a dog bite, and 1 about a barking dog; 9 medical emergencies, 9 fire alarms or fires and 2 ‘other’ alarms.

Police investigated 5 burglar alarms — false, and one burglary into a home during the day. There were two theft reports, plus a stolen motor vehicle and an unauthorized use of a vehicle.

There were 9 reports of suspicious persons, 1 of a suspicious vehicle, 1 of a suspicious person, 3 of trespassing, and one each of vandalism, criminal mischief, and harassment by communication.

There was a male juvenile runaway.

Police responded to 6 motor vehicle accidents, 8 traffic and parking problems plus 5 traffic r ed issues, 3 aiding of motorists, and ticketed one for an accident, while issuing warnings to another driver.

Ordinance offences included a false fire alarm littering, and two violations of township codes.

There was a violation of a protection order, one mental health check, two lost/missing adults (both found), and two death investigations (no crime).

There were three investigations and a follow-up, 6 welfare checks, 4 building checks, and 4 investigations of 9-1-1 hang-ups.

Police assisted local fire companies 4 times, and other police 8 times.

The department’s four vehicles patrolled a total of 8,102 miles.

Call 9-1-1 for incidents like fireworks, loud music or noise - Kidder Police will respond.

Lake Harmony Rescue Squad Monthly Report The two LHRS ambulances were out on 38 calls in August. 34 of those calls were in Lake Harmony, and 4 into the White Haven area. The LHRS also turned out for 13 fire calls. The units were on the road 2,340 miles.

The new 4-wheel drive ambulance is due to arrive in Lake Harmony in the next few weeks.

The oldest unit will then be sent to the Bushkill Ambulance, who has bought it, and the proceeds go towards this year’s payment for the new unit.

Four radios have been bought for the units and crews. On order is the Lucas CPR Compression System for heart attack cases which improves survival significantly.
