Light Up the Dark

by Ruth Isenberg Dusk at 5, and dark by 5:30—days too short, and nights too long. November into December is a time of darkness.

All the same, there are bright spots. Sun on the lake at noon, red leaves on the oak trees.

Christmas lights! We appreciate the light more when it contrasts so strongly with the dark.

If you stepped outside in the early morning hours of November 19, you were treated to a spectacular show of light and dark. The longest lunar eclipse of a full moon for 580 years was unfolding in the night sky.

We’d gone to bed under overcast skies, so didn’t expect very much. But by 2 a.m., the skies had cleared, and the eclipse was clearly visible in a gorgeous starry background. Those conditions remained when I next checked it at 4 a.m.

There are bits of color everywhere you look.

Bushes full of red berries are attracting birds of all hues. Bright jackets, scarves and gloves create warm feelings, as well as actual warmth.

Most of all, Thanksgiving gatherings and holiday happenings create the best light of all—the light of love of family and friends.

KIDDER TOWNSHIP MEETINGS

Kidder Township Supervisor meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at the township building, and unless otherwise noted, begin at 6:30 PM. Notices of special meetings are posted at the township building and advertised. Planning meetings are held the 1st Wednesday at 6 PM; Zoning meetings, the last Monday at 6 PM; EAC, the second Wednesday at 7 PM. The public is welcome. Some meetings are being held online due to COVID restrictions.

USPS Operation Santa is a much-beloved 109-year old program run by the U.S. Postal Service. The goal for the future is, and has always been, to help more children and families in need have a happy holiday when they otherwise may not — one letter to Santa at a time.

Over the years, the program took on a life of its own. And today cities around the country have established successful programs with recognized charitable organizations, major corporations, local businesses and Postal Service employees, making a major difference in the lives

of the children coast to coast.

In 2017, work on the digital USPS Operation Santa program began.

The pilot test occurred in New York City.

Only letters from NYC populated the site and adopters were required to be within proximity of the James A. Farley Post Office in Manhattan because packages had to be shipped from

that facility. Puerto Rico was included after the hurricanes impacted the island

In 2018, the Postal Service expanded the 2017 pilot test to include additional locations (Austin, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Washington DC — and Puerto Rico and Chico, CA (site of major wildfires that year). Letters from those locations populated the website and only people in those locations could adopt them. Packages had to be shipped from one designated post office in each location.

In 2019, the digital program expanded further. Letters from 17 locations populated the website and anyone in the country could adopt them. Packages could be shipped from more than 19,000 post offices across the country.

In 2020, the program went nationwide.

had to be addressed to Santa’s official US Postal Service address: 123 ELF ROAD, NORTH POLE 88888. Packages could be shipped from 19,000 post offices around the country.

Can anyone write a letter to Santa?

Yes. Anyone can write a letter! The Postal Service receives tens of thousands of letters each year written by children and adults. Everyone deserves a little magic during the holidays!

Does the letter need to say anything specific?

The letter doesn’t NEED to say anything specific, but it should. Being specific — including details like whether the gift is for a boy or girl and including ages helps. Games and book titles, sizes (infant, toddler, teen, etc), colors, etc. makes it easier for the letter adopter to fulfill.

Does the envelope need a postage stamp?

Why? Yes. The envelope addressed to 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888, requires a First-Class Mail postage stamp in order to be processed through the postal network. The envelope also needs a complete return address: full name, street address including apartment number and street directional, if applicable, city, state and ZIP Code.

Why is a return address necessary?

Without a return address, Santa’s helpers have no way of knowing how to get a gift to you.

Is the 123 Elf Road address a legitimate address?

The official U.S. Postal Service address for Santa Claus is 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888.

Lake Harmony Fire Company partners with Ronald McDonald House in Toy Drive There’ still time to donate The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, the original House, which serves as an example of how people can work to help those in need, is partnering with the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Department.

For years, the “House” has served and housed families that have children with serious illnesses that are being treated at Philadelphia hospitals.

The House members and volunteers have an extensive network of organizations and businesses volunteering and contributing time and money to help young patients and their families. The Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company is now one of those organization and is participating in the Ronald McDonald House annual toy collection.

The toys, which must be new and unwrapped, and may not be violent or religious in nature, will be collected by the Fire Company and delivered to the House in mid-December.

With most parents concerned about the health of their ill child, they do not have the opportunity to shop for toys. Thus, the donated toys are made available to the families of the patients staying at the house. The parents simply choose the toys left at the House, free of charge for their sick child, as well as his/her siblings — a very rewarding endeavor.

If you would like to donate, please drop off a toy(s) at the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company located at 257 Lake Harmony Road, Lake Harmony on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and Noon or Monday evenings at 6:30. You may also drop off your toys at the Kidder Township Municipal Building between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. A check made payable to “Ronald McDonald House” is also acceptable.

This drive begins immediately and will end on Saturday, December 4. These ill children and their families are waiting for your generosity. Thank you.

On the Road Our time on the road these last several weeks, Ruth and I have tried to get onto roads less traveled to enjoy the Poconos’ foliage show. While this year’s foliage season may not have been as spectacular as others in recent memory, the show was satisfying. And into mid-November, the weather has cooperated — no big rainstorms or windstorms — so that even now, there are some stately stands of old oak trees still holding on to their leaves. So, as Thanksgiving approaches, there are still rides to be taken where leaves will provide some special scenery.

On one of our recent trips passing through Jim Thorpe, the sky was overcast and sun was beginning to peek through. At one point, the sun’s rays hit a band of oaks up on the hill overlooking the town, shining on the rich browns, light golds and even maroons of some of the trees. It’s an added treat, and also adds to the foliage season.

Next up will be the days when a light snow decorates the trees…

Also among the things we are out looking for are holiday decorations. There’s a brief period

in between Hallowe’en and Thanksgiving where some nice people put out some nice Thanksgiving-themed décor… thank you to all of you who do this. While I love the festiveness of Christmas lights and the wide variety of Christmas decorations, there is a charm about homes decorated for Thanksgiving.

On the flip side of that are the early displays of inflatable Santas and the like. I think it’s too early until Black Friday on those.

something special a couple of weeks ago, a bald eagle atop a tree overlooking a field near White Haven. There were a couple of crows on lower branches and as we passed by, one of them took a fly-by to see if perhaps the eagle could be convinced to move along. He could not…

Neither Ruth nor I are adjusting well to Standard Time. With the sun setting around 5, we get home after dark most days. Ruth has us counting down to the solstice in December, after which the days start to get a bit brighter.

One more thought — I like to joke about raking season, which is upon us. There’s been a lot of work around our house either raking, or gutter cleaning. I expect to continue to be raking up into early December.

Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy Thanksgiving, and safe drives to all who hit the road early this year to see family. Also, Happy Chanukah to all who celebrate.

Lake News Archives From December 2000 LAKE NEWS The Mountain’s Edge celebrated its first anniversary on November 4.

Pocono West Realty sent real estate agents Joyce Bradley, Wayne Petzold, Lucille Raymond, Marie Delaney and David Miller for a day in Atlantic City as a reward for a banner year.

Diane O’Brien was appointed Kidder Township Manager on November 14, replacing Richard Carr who was dismissed in September. As a result of O’Brien’s appointment, there will be a vacancy on the board of supervisors.

Pet Supplies Unlimited hosted their annual pet photo with Santa day on December 10.

The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad sold Emergency Locator Lights that flash on and off when turned on — to help responders find your emergency. Cost is $20.

At the Mauch Chunk Opera House were Christmas movies for five days early this month, and a Songs of Christmas show on the 9th.

The recipe page features a baked turkey meatballs using Quaker Oats.

Saturday Night Lightning returned to Big Boulder starting the last Saturday in December, with a torchlight parade, fireworks, and tribute rock bands.

Lights at the Lake to debut December 3 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park Join Raising the House for a magical drive through light show that will feature brilliant holiday displays throughout picturesque Mauch Chunk Lake Park, 625 Lentz Trail, Jim Thorpe.

Guests can stay warm and cozy inside their cars while the whole family enjoys a dazzling collection of holiday lights through a mile path at the lake.

This is sure to become a holiday tradition for the whole family. For the safety of all guests, walking is not permitted at the light show. Bathrooms will be available at the start of the drive.

Fire Company Reports for October There were 31 calls in October for the Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company. On the list are 7 smoke detector activations, 5 motor vehicle accidents with injuries including an extrication from a vehicle, 2 assists of police, an air ambulance standby, a CO2 incident and another with a CO detector activation with no CO present, 4 malfunctioning alarms and one false alarm, The calls were all in Kidder Township except for one, into Penn Forest.

October was a quieter month for the Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company, responding to 31 calls. Sixteen of those were also with Lake Harmony VFC and 9 were medical QRS calls.

Responses include vehicle accidents on interstate 80 (with extrication), the Turnpike and Routes 903 and 940. There was a building fire, and one wires and trees down, a carbon monoxide incident, and a handful of smoke detector activations.

The company has been out 416 times so far this year from their two stations.

Theresa Erbstein provided this month’s cover shot of a Cedar Waxwing. We’d originally asked if she had a turkey pictures, and she did as shown here, but the Cedar Waxwing just felt more seasonal. All photos were take almost out her back door in Lake Harmony. Regarding the turkey, she wrote “There were 3 chicks but only 2 can be seen in this photo. I believe this was the spring of 2019.

The mother was very protective and as soon as she fluffed her feathers I left her alone and watched from a distance. They were kept well hidden and camouflaged.”

2021 Kidder Township Elections This was an election year for Kidder Township offices. The Carbon County Elections Bureau is still listing unofficial results, which are here: For the 6-year supervisors offices, Wilson Klotzman had 246 votes as a Republican, and Bruce Berger had 204, cross-filed Democrat and Republican. There were also four write-ins. For the balance of a supervisor’s term, of four years, Republican Ray Gluck earned 303 votes, and there were 10 write-ins.

Kim Ginopolas, who was cross-filed, earned 334 votes and was re-elected for a four-year term.

There were no opponents on the ballot for any of the above.

For Constable, there was no one listed on the ballot, and a combined 35 votes written in. Noel Torres was top vote getter here according to unofficial sources. The term is for six years.

In the north district, Lois Hammer has 91 votes as Judge of Elections, and Norma Wiegand has 90 votes to be Inspector of Elections — both fouryear terms. In the south district, LAKE NEWS is waiting for results of write-ins for both Judge of Elections and Inspector of Elections.

In 2022, there will be primaries and then general elections for Congressman, State Representative and State Senator, plus for Governor and U.S. Senate.

Kidder Planning approves minor subdivision

November’s Kidder Township Planning Commission meeting approved an 18-acre minor subdivision of property in Albrightsville. The land, part of a larger parcel of 48 acres located opposite the Pine Point Plaza on Route 903.

The commission approved the subdivision with

a waiver on both wetlands delineation and septic or sewage plans, as the lot owner has not started plans for any development at this time. When development plans come together for the property, the owner(s) will come back to the Planning Commission to present again.

The waiver was approved unanimously, to include a revised stream buffer as the property is east of Swamp Run.

The LHRS had a very busy month in October, with 50 calls, an increase of 15 from 2020. 44 of those calls were in Lake Harmony, 3 were into Penn Forest, two into the White Haven area, and one into Monroe County.

The LHRS also turned out for 10 fire calls.

The Squad has been called out 428 times so far this year (up 65). The two units were on the road 2,859 miles.

Donations are coming in from the letter campaign. The LHRS is raising money towards a new chassis for the older of the two units. Kidder supervisors approve Henry Partners warehouse, balance 2022 budget

by Seth Isenberg At the November Kidder Township supervisors meeting on the 18th, there was a light agenda that was heavy on looking ahead to 2022.

The long path to approval for the Richard Henry Partners warehouse on Route 940 finally delivered the sewage planning portion of their submission.

The engineers for the developer worked with soil scientist Tim Craven and Kidder Twp. Sewage Enforcement Officer Robert Fugate Jr. to come up with a set of four sites that will accommodate flows of over 10,000 ggd. The developer notes that the actual flows will not be known until the tenant is signed. Work to prepare the property will now start in 2022. Supervisors’ approval came with a list of conditions, with key approvals from outside agencies in place (PennDOT, DEP, etc.) before certain actions can begin.

Budget workshops held in October hammered out a balanced budget for 2022 of $2,225,672.

That proposed budget, which does not raise taxes, was approved to be advertised.

Two ordinances that had been advertised last month were approved unanimously. The amend-

ed Certificate of Occupancy ordinance has added language for short term rentals. The Emergency Services Fund ordinance now has language that authorizes supervisors to choose the best option for payments for equipment, as a lump sum if needed, or in equal annual payments.

Coming before supervisors, builder RGB asked for a waiver of a wetlands buffer on a lot that they hoped to build a home upon. Due to changes over the years, much of the lot was within a buffer. They asked for a reduction of the stream buffer to 50′ as well as a waiver of the side buffers. This was granted.

Sun Energy’s subdivision in Albrightsville was granted an extension to February 18, 2022, PennEast Pipeline was granted an extension to June 20, 2022, and the preliminary land development for the Mountain Laurel Resort was withdrawn as the developers plan to submit a whole new one.

Roadmaster Bruce Berger reported that the township truck is “ready for winter.”

Congratulations were offered from township manager Suzanne Brooks to the re-elected supervisors, and to Noel Torres who was elected by writein votes to be the township constable. She added that the proposed 2022 budget will be posted onto the township website, or citizens can stop by the municipal office to look over a paper copy.

Police Chief Matthew Kuzma reported “a quiet month” for October.

In public comment, Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief Ralph Lennon invited people to donate unwrapped toys to the Ronald McDonald House by dropping them off at the Fire Company.

The next regular meeting will be December 16, with a start at 6:30 p.m.

$4K Raised for Operation Give A Gobbler The Carbon Chamber & Economic Development Corp. (CCEDC) in conjunction with Colossal Radio, The Pennsylvania State Police Troop N, Off The Charts Music School, and the Hofford Mill hosted the second annual Operation Give A Gobbler on Wednesday, November 17, at the Colossal Radio studio on Delaware Avenue in Palmerton and collected $4,000 in cash donations and 100 turkeys for The Valor Clinic Foundation to help feed Veterans in need this holiday season.

The drive, which ran from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the studio, accepted donations of frozen turkeys, canned and non-perishable goods and cash to support the efforts of The Valor Clinic.

The mission of VALOR is to provide veterans with assistance accessing benefits, securing shelter, and providing long-lasting Post Traumatic Stress resources and relief through its Veterans Unstoppable Program.

The Holidays Meals Program is a no-cost, confidential program that provides holiday meals to our warriors who may be struggling financially.

“Operation Give a Gobbler is a humbling experience” said ‘Doc’ Layne Roberts, on air DJ at Colossal Radio. “Helping our veterans is personal for me, and these meals are the least we can do to say thank you” he said.

The efforts were supported by volunteer Stacey Hines from Stacey Hines Photography and Bob & Rhonda Spadell of DJ Wide Glide as well as the Pocono Chamber of Commerce, and Palmerton Borough.

Organizers are grateful for the support of the community and businesses who donated to the

Kidder Police report for October 2021 October was a quieter month, with only 114 calls on the report. Of these, eight were domestic incidents and seven more were fights and disputes, two more listed as fights, five harassments, and four for disturbing the peace. The department investigated three suspicious person or vehicle reports. There were seven trespassing incidents, and seven assists to other police. There were also seven vehicle crashes and seven medical emergency responses. Five incidents are listed as traffic related.

There was a sexual assault, and a sex offense. A weapons use incident is on the list.

Police investigated a fraud, and a theft on a credit card/ ATM. There were two robbery false alarms, and six burglary false alarms. There were four haz-

ardous conditions calls, three traffic and parking problems, two lost articles, a missing juvenile, and a missing adult. There was also a warrant served.

Kidder officers followed up on two 9-1-1 hand ups. They also did four welfare checks.

The department is now training with its new drone.

Kidder’s four police vehicles patrolled 5,145 miles in October.

Sewage Enforcement Officer Report For the period between mid-October and mid-November, ending on the 18th, SEO Robert Fugate Jr. issued two permits into the central sewer, and did eight interim inspections on properties on the sewer. Out in the rest of the township, he issued one permit, did three field inspections, two malfunction inspections, and did a design review.

He also reviewed a subdivision plan. For wells, he did to interim inspections and issued one well permit.

McDavid’s NHL dominance reaching unprecedented territory

by Christian Mota-Pyette Connor McDavid is currently the best hockey player on the planet. Numbers tell the tale. As of November 16, he is second in the league in total points (29) and tied for sixth in goal-scoring (10). While NHL fans have grown accustomed to McDavid’s worldclass ability, his current output is extraordinary.

And after last season’s incredible 105 points in just 56 games, it seemed unlikely McDavid could replicate his efforts, let alone top it. But he is.

At his current season pace, McDavid is projected to finish with approximately 70 goals and 175 points. Not since the era of Wayne Gretzky. “The Great One,” has anybody come close to the numbers being put up by McDavid. Only Gretzky and

What makes McDavid even more lethal is that he teams up with linemate Leon Draisaitl (33 points/17 goals). They look to be the new Lemieux/ Jagr or Gretzky/Kurri combo. Both players are incredibly talented and play well together.

Whether McDavid can sustain his current output remains to be seen. But based on his career numbers to date (albeit under a 140 game sample size), what once seemed impossible appears to be within McDavid’s grasp. And it would be a historic feat.

Code Enforcement October Report 2021 Code Enforcement Officer Noel Torres had a busy month keeping Kidder Township nice. He was out 45 times to look at containers for trash with problems, and 52 more times where garbage was accumulating. Those incidents were all cleared without the need for writing a ticket for a violation.

Other work included nine stops about high

grass and weeds, and two about abandoned or unregistered vehicles. Again, these incidents were all cleared without the need for writing a ticket for a violation.

Torres made seven stops about trees preservation, and conducted six home inspections.

His report lists 22 “other violations,” again with no tickets issued.
