ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013
AC A DE MY
Letter from the Chair Dear Cape Cod Academy Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank all of you for your interest in and commitment to Cape Cod Academy. As a long-time parent and trustee involved with the school, I have seen graduating classes with as few as seven students to as many as 56. I knew the school when there were just two fields, no tennis courts, no gyms, and just a handful of classrooms. As our school has physically grown, so has our academic and extra-curricular program. And it continues to move forward. Throughout this annual report, you will find stories and articles from our faculty giving you a glimpse inside the classroom, a feel for our philosophy about educating children, and a sense of how CCA fulfills its mission of providing academic excellence in a safe, values-centered community. This report is our chance to publicly thank our many donors and I hope you understand how each gift has an impact on what we provide each day. Gifts allow CCA to offer a variety of exceptional opportunities for our students. Whether you’re a new alum just beginning to support the school or a long-time donor, we are grateful that you participated in helping support Cape Cod Academy’s students, faculty and program. Every gift helps immediately and impacts programs such as: • Extra-curricular activities such as Mock Trial • Chewonki Trip for grade 8 • Faculty & Staff professional development • Guest speakers and programs • Athletics – uniforms, referees, transportation • Financial aid • Technology infrastructure upgrades • Field trips Take a moment to enjoy the photos of joyful children, focused athletes, and engaged learners; read about our arts, middle school, Spanish classes, athletics; and gear up for an exciting upcoming year at Cape Cod Academy. Sincerely,
David W. McGraw Chair, Board of Trustees
Report of Gifts July 1, 2012- June 30, 2013 Each year, our school community generates strong and essential support for our school. Support comes in many shapes and can be seen when peers support classroom accomplishments, fans support an athletic team, parents support a coffee house, or when we all support a community member facing a personal challenge. This report of gifts is created to recognize the hundreds of financial supporters whose contributions define the difference between a good and a great education. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s fundraising efforts.

Bungee Jumping through Middle School
By Joe Remillard, Lower and Middle School Head
In the article, The Middle by Peter Meyer*, the following teacher analysis grabbed me; “Says Diane Ross, a middle-school teacher for 17 years and for 13 more a teacher of education courses for licensure in Ohio, ‘If you are the warm, nurturing, motherly, grandmotherly type, you are made for early childhood education. If you love math or science or English, then you are the high school type. If you love bungee jumping, then you are the middle school type.’” The ups and downs of an early adolescent’s life are quick and seemingly inexplicable. Middle school teachers must be willing to go with the unexpected vacillations while always reigning emotions back toward equilibrium. Having worked closely with middle school faculty, I was witness to the adept footwork they naturally displayed as one student after another popped up like whack-a-moles screaming for immediate attention.
Cape Cod Academy’s middle school faculty responded like experts over and over again this past year as they helped every temporarily frenzied student work through one event after another. The results were a smoothly run year where teaching and learning remained at the center and all actions and reactions served our Middle School vision: to create a place where students and families can expect individual attention through trusted relationships in a supportive environment that will challenge and prepare adolescents for their high school years. Our middle school faculty is looking forward to “bungee jumping” with our newest middle schoolers in September as they help them learn to navigate their adolescent world.
Be it a lost cell phone, the sudden realization that it’s so-n-so’s birthday, a break up, a low grade, a high grade, the same boring lunch, or the discovery of a lollypop - any number of events important or not, large or small, can generate a gigantic reaction from the average middle school student. If the adult in the immediate vicinity overreacts or seems inattentive, a minor event can actually become a major issue. Chewonki, September 2012

Cape Cod Academy Parents Association The 2012-13 fundraising efforts were very productive, raising just over $8,500 this year with the Meadow Farms Fundraising, the Holiday Book Fair, School Store sales, Teacher Lunch Giveaway and Stop & Shop A+ program. These efforts allowed us to support great programs and trips spread out across all three school divisions. To the right are the areas the PA was able to support. We appreciate everyone’s support throughout the year and look forward to a successful year next year. We thank Alison Carvounis, Treasurer, for her service on the Parents Association Executive Board. We welcome Josee Young, Treasurer, as she joins Janet Hassett, President, and Angela Hahn, Secretary on the Parents Association Executive Board for the 2013-2014 school year.

Axis of Hope
By Keith Lewison, Upper School Humanities
Learning to Resolve Complex Conflicts Locally, Nationally, and Internationally at CCA When I first saw Carl Hobert (founding director of Axis of Hope and professor at BU) in action during a spring 2011 conference at Boston University I knew he had the gifts of an exceptional educator. He had about a dozen veteran educators engaged in ice-breaker activities that he commonly uses with students during Axis of Hope workshops. Many of these activities are based on those used by the National Outdoor Leadership School and typically include forming groups based on birth dates without speaking, forming groups based on shared interests like favorite ice cream, and more physical tasks like untangling a human knot without letting go of hands.
the current and contentious issue of U.S. immigration policy, especially the key issues of border security, education, and what to do about those already in the country illegally.
These activities are meant to build trust prior to entering into the day’s conflict scenario where the students will represent various interest groups such as opposing factions in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. But what most impressed me that morning at BU was the energy and engagement Professor Hobert had summoned forth from the rather normally skeptical audience of educators. I knew that if he could capture their interest then his workshop would be a breeze for my CCA upper school students.
The benefits for CCA students have been excellent. Not only have they had the opportunity to learn more about these particular current issues, but they have also practiced important critical thinking, communicating, and negotiating skills.
Since that spring I have tried to build a long-term relationship with Axis of Hope and CCA, which has involved bringing Carl Hobert to campus twice now to run workshops for our upper school students, as well as integrating some of the negotiation skills used in the program into my classroom practices. The workshops Professor Hobert has offered have included one on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in which the students must represent the major interest groups and negotiate a partition of Jerusalem. More recently the students have participated in negotiations involving
After an all day workshop the students drafted a letter summarizing their conclusions to send to the office of Secretary of State John Kerry. Additionally, Carl Hobert gave a talk about his new book “Raising Global IQ”, which should be required reading for teachers, students, and parents as we continue to improve educational practices to meet the demands of today’s changing world.
Many students spoke of these benefits afterward but several students stand out: one who has taken up intensive summer study of Arabic the past two years as a result of the first Axis of Hope program, one who translated with precision Professor Hobert’s concluding remarks from English to Spanish for the other students, one who spoke at the book talk about the importance of the Axis of Hope program—especially learning empathy, and several students who attended a conference with the ambassador of Morocco after becoming interested in international diplomacy from the Axis of Hope program. As a teacher it has been a blessing to watch all of this unfold and I hope to be able to continue to bring Axis of Hope to CCA for the benefit of future students.

Sculpting our Arts Program The visual arts program at CCA is unique among the schools on Cape Cod. We can “sculpt” the students’ arts understanding from K through grade 12. Joining me in the art department are strong and diverse art teachers, Jan Rapp and DeWayne Stallings. Together we cover all the art classes a CCA student will have in his or her time at school. Students typically go to the art room for class on average twice a week throughout the school year, (advanced art students attend art classes every day). All manner of projects and processes are experimented during that time. For example, DeWayne Stallings will introduce a unit about creating ancient Sumerian clay jewelry to 5th grade students in conjunction with their classroom studies of the same ancient culture. Jan Rapp may have a class of kindergartners or 7th graders working on collages and linoleum block prints. Eighth grade students in her classes are encouraged to spend part of their community service hours helping to paint back drops and stage sets for the annual spring musical production. I have 10th grade students make pinhole cameras out of shoeboxes as an introduction to photography. Students are instructed in photographic arts from darkroom to computer. Jan, DeWayne and I help the high school students polish their artwork for shows and competitions and prepare portfolios for college. CCA has art facilities that rival the Cape’s public and private schools, including kilns, potter’s wheels, photographic dark room, digital arts lab, four art rooms, and display cases and art-walls around the school.

By Gretchen Tanzer, Art Chair CCA is fully invested in visual arts as an integral part of a well-rounded education. Visual art classes are required through 10th grade and a large percentage elect to continue taking art classes in their junior and senior years. Come in to school for a visit during the academic year to view the fabulous art works on display in the halls.

Joanne Chope Corsiglia CCA Life Trustee On July 27, 2013, our community lost a treasured person. Joanne Chope Corsiglia passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Joanne was a vibrant person, deeply committed to causes dear to her. Her service to Cape Cod Academy began when her daughter, Kate ’86, enrolled in 1977. It wasn’t long before she was an active member of our Board of Trustees. At her memorial service, former Head of School Tom Evans spoke. His words here capture the essence of Joanne and what she means to our school. “Joanne’s devotion to the school was boundless. She chaired board committees, she led a series of very successful Designer Showhouses, and she served as Board Chair from ‘93 to ‘98 – a complicated time when the school had just barely survived a recession and faced big building challenges if it was to be competitive in the world of independent schools. Joanne’s obituary states that she was “instrumental in the development of the school.” “Instrumental” is a huge understatement.” Joanne’s contributions to Cape Cod Academy as a leader, advisor, loyal friend, and generous supporter, have helped build our school into the fine academic institution it is today. Our community enjoys many of her tangible gifts, including Chope Tennis Courts and Chope Commons, but her wisdom, guidance and moral support of CCA over the past 30 years are gifts that will last forever. Joanne’s family knew how important it was to Joanne that all students have access to a Cape Cod Academy education. They asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the school’s financial aid program. We thank the following friends who made contributions in memory of Joanne.*

Athletics at CCA
By Philip Kenney, Upper School Humanities and Athletic Director
Athletics is an integral part of life at Cape Cod Academy as it is in most schools. Students in grades 7-11 are required to participate in one team sport per year but many are involved in more than one sport. As an extension of the classroom, athletics is another means to reinforce the school’s core values. Over the years, we have created a competitive athletic environment that serves both our middle school and upper school. Just as we have high expectations for our students; so too do we expect much from our athletes.
much about one’s character. These qualities can be learned in every sport CCA has to offer.
While it may sound like a cliché at times, the life lessons one can learn from team sports are invaluable for personal growth. It may not always be clear what those lessons are day in and day out but over the course of a season and throughout the years, one learns to balance the rigors of the classroom with those of the playing arena. Commitment, discipline, hard work and sacrifice are among the many important values one must embrace to be a respected team member. These values live beyond the world of athletics and help student-athletes to be well equipped for life beyond our campus.
Our cooperative hockey team with Cape Cod Tech also returned to state tournament play. Boys’ tennis enjoyed their 12th straight year of individual and team tournament play and our other teams just missed postseason play by a game or two. Sailing had the most impressive run as they captured the New England Fleet Racing Championship and finished second at Fleet Racing Nationals on Lake Michigan. They then qualified for Team Racing Nationals in Tampa and came home with a fifth place finish. The success of our teams is the direct result of the quality of work our student-athletes and coaches put into their athletic endeavors.
An athletic season has many ups and downs just as life does. Every one of our athletes experienced success and failure this year and they are all the better off for it. One of the most important lessons one can learn is how to cope with those ups and downs in a mature and tempered manner. The persistence required to work through challenging times remains with an athlete forever and the ability to win with grace says

Our athletes performed quite admirably during the year as the girls’ soccer and boys’ golf teams qualified for state tournament play in the fall. During the winter, boys’ basketball won the league title for the fourth consecutive year and girls’ basketball qualified for the state tournament for the first time. Both basketball teams were awarded the Cape and Islands League Sportsmanship Award as well.
Successful athletes are those that sacrifice one’s own goals and desires for those of the team and learn to lift teammates up when they are down. This occurred regularly at all levels of play throughout the year and I commend our student-athletes and coaches who embraced this approach to athletics at CCA.
Alumni Share Experience During Annual Career Day Event Cape Cod Academy was excited to welcome several alumni to campus in April to speak with our senior class during Career Day. The alumni shared their experiences since graduation, primarily focusing on life beyond the college classroom.
They shared their advice on internships, summer employment during college, networking, and most of all, pursuing one’s passion. Careers represented included a large animal veterinarian, Moody’s Information Technologist, Marketing Manager for a local business, EMC Corp. Account Mgr., Social Services Advocate in Public Defender’s Office, GE Audit Mgr., and a current Northeastern student pursuing a master’s in electrical and computer engineering. Seniors met in small groups with the alumni, allowing for informal question and answer opportunities. We are grateful to Kate Chope ’86, Adrian Morehouse ’88, Molly MacGregor ’00, John Griffin ’03, Allie Puleo ’04, Steve Griffin ’04 and Jamie Hardy ’07 for traveling to Cape Cod Academy to meet with our senior class. Introducing Spanish
By Paloma McLardy, Lower School Spanish
This year has been the most enjoyable year of my career as a Spanish teacher. First of all, the students have been receptive and motivated to learn. Secondly, I feel privileged to work with such an amazing group of faculty. They are terrific at what they do, dedicated, and flexible. That atmosphere gave me great confidence and support; I could not have succeeded without it. I believe that children have an innate curiosity and desire to learn, and as an educator my job is to tap into it and run with it. That love for learning is fostered when a child is engaged and having fun. So, what have we done in the Spanish classroom this year? A better question would be: what have we not done?
A favorite game of the students is Agent 007 (agente cero, cero, siete). In this game, I tell the kids that there has been a terrible crime, and that someone has stolen the chocolate. Then I let them know some clues about the “thief”, for instance “El ladron tiene ojos negros” (The thief has black eyes) or “Tiene un perro grande” (He has a big dog). In order to determine who it is, they patrol the classroom in their detective outfit, “interrogating” everyone to find if they are as innocent as they look. Overall, we have had lots of fun and I feel very proud of how much Spanish the children have learned.
We performed a play with the 5th graders titled “Martina, Josefina Catalina, the Beautiful Cockroach¨, which is a wonderful story full of wit and culture. It was a great experience for all. We have conducted “Restaurantes” where the children set up their shops with real food and buy and sell with Doña Paloma dollars, using their Spanish vocabulary. We sang songs, held races and competitions, created funny drawings of monsters describing body parts in Spanish, etc.

On Saturday, March 23rd the Cape Cod Academy community traveled back a few decades for “That ‘70s Auction”. The bell bottoms, hip huggers and gogo boots brought the ‘70s back to life! Everyone bid high and bid often, in both the silent and live auctions and at great levels for the Fund A Need Challenge. We are grateful to the many donors who supported Fund A Need for an outdoor pool for our summer camp program.* Overall, the auction raised over $78,000 for our school.
