Letter from the HEAD OF SCHOOL As I reflect on the 2020-2021 school year, my first, at Cape Fear Academy, I am filled with pride at how far we have come as a community. Last July no one was certain if we could bring teachers and students back to campus and conduct classes face-to-face safely. With comprehensive health and safety protocols firmly in place, we opened the school year and never looked back! Despite the many challenges, 2020-2021 was an incredibly successful year for our community in many ways. Faculty and student safety was our top priority and CFA successfully navigated the pandemic with minimal disruption to in-person classes with few, if any, on-campus transmissions. We were successful, in part, because we made key investments in technology which enabled our innovative and resilient teachers to provide real-time lessons for those students who elected to continue their studies remotely — alongside their classmates who learned in person. By offering the full array of Arts and Athletics programs, we did everything in our power to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience. A few highlights included the first ever outdoor band and theater performances and several livestream musicals (which we watched from the comfort of our living rooms). In athletics, CFA Hurricanes flourished, with Boys Tennis capturing a State Title, and Girls Swimming, Girls Tennis and Boys Lacrosse earning State Runners-Up.

None of this would be possible without the long standing support and philanthropy of our generous benefactors who, for many years now, have given unselfishly of their time and financial resources.

The CFA Class of 2021 thrived, with 100% of our senior class accepted to college and 18 graduates heading to top 30 institutions, including a 60% acceptance rate at UNC-Chapel Hill among those in the CFA Class of 2021 who applied. In their ranks are a Morehead Cain Scholar and a National Merit Scholar. Four members of the class will continue their athletic careers in college. As we begin the new school year, we are grateful to be together again. We enrolled 715 students — an all-time high for CFA — clear evidence that families recognize the value of a CFA education now more than ever. With the continued commitment and care of our brilliant faculty and staff, the fortitude and grace of our amazing students, and the support and encouragement of our generous parents and alumni, we are confident we will continue to offer our students a rich academic environment, a wealth of opportunities, and an abundance of care as we advance our mission in meaningful ways. None of this would be possible without the long standing support and philanthropy of our generous benefactors who, for many years now, have given unselfishly of their time and financial resources. It is all the more fitting and proper that we have selected “Gratitude” as our theme for the year.

Warm regards,

Edward M. Ellison, Head of School

Liza Murtagh, Class of 2021, finished her decorated career in the pool for Cape Fear Academy with eight NCISAA Division II state titles, and was named the StarNews Varsity All-Area Girls Swimmer of the Year for 2021. Murtagh came into her final season already holding four state titles, and she doubled that mark with four victories at the 2021 NCISAA Division II championships. Murtagh won two individual races, the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 7.76 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.73), and was a part of two winning relay teams. She was the anchor in both relays, with the Hurricanes winning the 400 freestyle by less than a second. Murtagh is continuing her competitive swimming career at Boston College as a member of the Eagles’ Swim Team.

Liza Murtagh, Class of 2021, stands with her parents, Jean and Gary, and sister Leah, Class of 2023, after signing her commitment letter to join the Boston College swim team on Nov. 13, 2020.

T

he Cape Fear Academy varsity boys tennis team knocked off Forsyth Country Day 5-1 on Saturday, May 15, to clinch the NCISAA Division II State Championship. The team capped off its impressive season with a 16-0 record for the 20202021 season. Cape Fear Academy won the title by taking two of the three doubles matches and then winning three singles matches during their matchup with Forsyth. Hayes Gilbert and Evan Das combined to win 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while JR Johnston and Ben Kane won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Cape Fear Academy's next two wins in the championship both required decisive third sets. Ben Kane won at No. 6 singles 2-6, 6-0, 10-8. Johnston then finished off the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory at No. 5 singles. This was the first state championship for the Cape Fear Academy varsity boys tennis team since 2015, and the second straight appearance in the state championship match after falling to Carmel Christian School in the previous season. The championship coaching staff consisted of co-head coaches Jon Ingham and Alan Donald, and assistant coach Alex Gianoplus ’13.

The Hurricanes lower seeds then powered Cape Fear Academy across the finish line in singles. KJ Kernan was the first to win at singles, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

WHY WE GIVE | ELIZABETH AND VIN ’94 WELLS

With my husband Vin ’94 as a Cape Fear Academy alum and me having attended a similar independent school, we knew the advantages of sending our kids, Lulu (Class of 2027) and Webb (Class of 2031) to Cape Fear Academy.

The academic rigor combined with exceptional arts and athletics was an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up for our children. Also, the teachers are so extraordinary! They really care about our kids and cater each child’s learning experience to fit their individual personality and learning style. Another benefit is the amazing extracurricular opportunities. Seeing our kids gain the confidence to speak in public and perform on a huge stage is so rewarding and fulfilling.

Philanthropic giving at CFA has provided our kids with so many opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise had. STEM equipment, classroom upgrades, theater musicals and field trips are several of the many experiences that our kids have enjoyed so far in their time at CFA. As members of the CFA community we feel it is important to teach our kids about philanthropy, and we want them to see us support the school they attend so they know we value their education above all else.” - Elizabeth Wells

LOWER SCHOOL BUILDING COMMUNITY, LEARNING TOGETHER

When it comes to the importance of in-person learning, no other division felt the impacts of the remote learning environment by the end of the 2019-2020 school year more than the Lower School. When students returned to in-person learning for the 2020-2021 school year, Lower School teachers first had to reestablish a sense of community between their students. “We really had to focus on building community and making the students feel comfortable first before we really dove into any academic learning,” said 3rd Grade teacher Gretchen Carlson. “Especially because we could not do a lot of small group teaching, and relied more on lecturestyle instruction.” Although the Lower School classrooms looked and operated differently, just being in person was a win for the students and teachers. “There are so many positives with physically being together in the space versus other schools in our area that were remote all last year,” said 2nd Grade teacher Alison Vliet. “There are less learning gaps, more of a community, and the students’ social-emotional wellbeing is much better.” Throughout the 2020-2021 school year the Lower School teachers developed alternative ways to create communitybuilding activities. Some of those included establishing morning meetings for the first 15 minutes of class, continuing the LS halloween parade while using “zombie arms” to encourage social distancing, hosting the virtual talent show, and field day. However, even the smallest moments proved equally as impactful, like being able to eat lunch outside as a class or continuing to include students who were learning remotely.

“Some kids were out all year, so some teachers like Elizabeth Lallathin would just leave the camera on during snack time to let those students bond and interact with their classmates,” Vliet said. “So when those students came back for the 2021-2022 school year they actually knew their classmates.” Although students did not have the chance to perform on stage, the Lower School talent show garnered the most participation of any year so far. Students were able to submit videos of their special talents that were compiled into a virtual talent show and distributed to the Lower School. “It wasn’t something academic, it was just for fun and it allowed us to see a side of kids that we don’t usually see,” Vliet said. “The reason we do talent shows is because you have to be brave and show some vulnerability by going up on stage, and we connect that back to public speaking which is one of our priorities here.” “The kids loved it, that was the most participation we had in a talent show,” Carlson said. “Whenever their classmates came on the video the kids would cheer so loud.” The most joyous event of the year came when it was time for the annual field day. Organized by Lower School Physical Education teacher Megan Green, the outdoor field day on May 6 was the first time the Lower School was able to be together as a whole all school year. “It was just the perfect day because they loved playing and being outside with their friends since that was the only thing we did all year as the whole Lower School,” Carlson said. “It was the most normal thing we did all year and the kids were elated.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FIND MATH SUCCESS

M

iddle School students at Cape Fear Academy found success during the 2020-2021 school year on the local, state and national levels through both Math Counts and the American Mathematics Contest. Led by Middle School math teacher Brian Johnson, the Math Counts team is comprised of middle school students that volunteer to compete, and meet weekly to work on practice problems for the contests. The 2020-2021 team had seven members and, while the team portion of the contests were not held due COVID-19 precautions, the team was able to compete as individuals via Zoom.

In his first time competing in Math Counts, Jackson Vliet (Class of 2027) made it to the state level of the competition where he finished 9th in North Carolina. Vliet had to make it past local and regional competitions before reaching the state level. “I didn't think I would make it past the first competition really,” Vliet said. “The test seems really hard when you’re taking it because of the pressure.” His coach, Johnson, said he expected Vliet to go multiple rounds in the competition and was not surprised at his high finish.

Vliet and other CFA Middle School students also found success in the national 8th Grade American Mathematics Contest (AMC 8) during the year as well. In November 2020, 60 Cape Fear Academy middle school students participated in AMC 8 along with 56,000 students across the nation. The AMC 8 is a multiple choice question contest given to students nationally. Along with being CFA's school winners, the following students scored in the top 25% of students nationally: 1st Place — Rebecca Deese (Class of 2025); 2nd Place — Ray McDonald (Class of 2025); tying for 3rd Place — Luke Fascher (Class of 2026), Katie Hayes O’Donovan (Class of 2026), Claire Mearns (Class of 2026), Addie Fikry (Class of 2027) and Jackson Vliet (Class of 2027). Middle School math teacher Katie Ragan administers the AMC 8 contest every year and said CFA’s top middle school math students usually place in the top 25% nationally. “The middle school competition is really geared to prepare the students for the Upper School AMC contests, and then their participation in the Upper School contests are really something colleges can look at when assessing a students’ application,” Ragan said. “These contests really push them to think outside the box with math and be willing to take on multi-step problems.”

“I think the fact that [Vliet] is in Middle School but taking math classes in Upper School gives him an advantage in solving Middle School math level problems,” Johnson said.

UPPER SCHOOL CAPSTONE COURSE OFFERS GRADUATE LEVEL WORK

AP Seminar students (from left) Daley Carney (Class of 2023), Alexandra Dugan (Class of 2022) and Avery Bishop (Class of 2022) defend their research project on the opioid crisis in the United States.

C

ape Fear Academy Upper School students now have the opportunity to complete a similar scope of work as graduate school students thanks to the implementation of the AP Capstone Diploma Program. The program consists of two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, and CFA is one of only two schools to offer the program in Wilmington. AP Seminar is a yearlong course in which students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives. Students learn to synthesize information from different sources, develop their own perspectives in researchbased written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. AP Research lets students deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of interest to them. Students design, plan, and conduct a yearlong researchbased investigation to address a research question, documenting their process with a portfolio. The course ends with a 4,000-5,000-word academic paper and a presentation with an oral defense, which contribute to the overall AP Research grade. Students can take AP Seminar as early as sophomore year, and then can move to AP research. If a student then passes four other AP classes they are awarded an AP Capstone diploma. CFA Upper School Dean of Student Jamison Fee said the program was created by AP to address a gap in skills many colleges noticed in their freshmen.

Just as the program challenges students to develop skills beyond what they are accustomed to, it also challenges the teacher as well. Unlike traditional AP classes, the teacher in both AP Capstone courses acts more like a coach. “They come to my class and learn how to do original research,” said Upper School social studies teacher Laura Bowen. “They come up with the question they want to research, they determine the methods, they execute the project, they analyze the results, and then look for trends and gaps in the current research out there.” “The amount of exposure these students have to public speaking, the research process, and understanding what the peer review process is to get published in a scientific journal really gives them a head start,” said Upper School science teacher Keni Reinks. “They are walking out of here and into the real world with exponentially more skills in writing, research and public speaking than students who did not participate in the program.” Reinks said the goal for the program is to encourage more students to begin the AP Capstone program in their sophomore year, and then AP Seminar in their junior year. In doing so, those students would be able to include all of their graduate-level work in their college application portfolio — an aspect of the college application process that is becoming more influential.

“What colleges and universities were seeing was deficiencies in research, working in groups to collaborate, and how to use primary research material,” Fee said.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT | BRUCE CHAPPELL ’13

T

he path that led Bruce Chappell, Class of 2013, to graduate with a masters in computational astrophysics from the University of Oslo in Norway in 2021 all began with his first AP Physics class at Cape Fear Academy.

“I always liked math and I had [Cody] Adams for all my classes, and my senior year was the first year he taught the AP Physics class, which I loved,” Chappell said. “So, because of his class I decided to keep studying it. I always thought I would be an engineer, but he was so good at explaining everything and I thought it was so cool that I just focused on physics.” After graduating from CFA in 2013, Chappell went on to Montana State University in Bozeman where he graduated with a BS in physics. Wanting to continue his studies in physics, Chappell applied to graduate schools, which included the University of Oslo. Chappell said the confidence he gained while at Cape Fear Academy helped him take the leap on moving to a new country.

“I think the best thing I took from Cape Fear Academy was that it made me not scared to try things that may have been difficult,” he said. “I built up the confidence to try stuff and the teachers made me feel like I could try new things without fear of failure.”

“The job will use the exact same algorithms and data modeling techniques but instead of solar physics it will be around the complex problems our clients present,” Chappell’s masters program in computational Chappell said. “For example, one problem could be astrophysics blended computer science and astrophysics, how to ensure airplanes leave with full capacity every and included one year of courses, one year of work as time given multiple variables.” a researcher, and a 60-page thesis on using machine learning to make predictions about the sun. During Looking back on his time at Cape Fear Academy from this time he also worked in the program’s solar research kindergarten to his senior year, Chappell suggested group, the Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics, which that students take full advantage of everything at their worked to model the fluid dynamics of the sun and disposal — opportunities that helped him achieve his recreate a physically accurate model of the interior of goals. the sun with mathematical modeling. “Use the resources at your disposal because CFA gives Most students that complete this masters program you a ton of resources, including teachers that love either continue as researchers, or use the principles of teaching,” he said. “The best thing is to use those tools machine learning and mathematical modeling in the while you have them and they may inspire you to find a business world. The latter was the next step Chappell different path or try new things you never thought of.” chose, and is currently working for KPMG at its Oslo office as a data science consultant.

2021 / AUCTION

Underneath the Same Big Sky

Every other year, parents, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty and staff come together to socialize with one another and raise the essential funds needed to support our students, faculty and staff. While we could not host an in person event, the event committee put together an incredible virtual event whereby all guests could celebrate “Underneath the Same Big Sky.” Those that purchased tickets came to campus for a festive drive-through event with an outdoor viewing of our lower school art projects, a DJ, and a beautifully decorated tent that cars processed through to get their delicious pre-ordered meals from Pine Valley Market and Little Pond Caterers along with wine donated by Coastal Beverage Company. In addition to the food, guests enjoyed curated playlists, and the ability to view a robust collection of items and experiences in an online silent auction. The event was a huge success netting more than $139,000! The event wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of our co-chairs Beth Adams Magrath P ’26 and Crystal Peebles AP ’21, P ’24, ’29, and their event committee:

ARTS | THE SHOW MUST GO ON

W

ith the COVID-19 pandemic forcing teachers to rethink the way they taught, the same situation applied to the Cape Fear Academy Arts Department. If there could not be any indoor audiences, let alone unmasked students performing on stage, how would the show go on?

The department began mapping out what things could look like prior to the 2020-2021 school year. With annual statewide events like the North Carolina Theatre Conference and the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools band auditions coming up in the fall the department also had to figure out how to replicate the cameradie and community-building nature of those overnight trips. For the theatre program, the fall production of “The Light Before We Land” was able to replicate elements of the NCTC competition and community building. However, the show involved multiple sets situated around CFA’s campus that featured different viegnettes the audience rotated around to. All those moving parts created the most challenging production the theatre program has created. “Looking back on it, that was the craziest thing we could have ever done but the students just embraced it and just went along with putting it together,” said performing arts technical director Benedict Fancy. “They just adopted it as the normal because there were no normals.” Members of the Class of 2021 Charlie Murtha, front, and Alex Johnson, back, perform outdoors in the theatrical production of “The Light Before We Land.”

One thing that aided such an ambitious production was the senior leaders of the Class of 2021. “Last year’s senior class was one of those anomalies in that there were 24 seniors involved in theatre in some way,” said theatre production coordinator Cheryl Kanzinger. “We had a lot of leadership from them — if this was going to happen that was the year for it to happen because we had such a great group of seniors to lead everyone along.” As the year went on and COVID restrictions eased, the theatre program pivoted to live streaming the rest of the productions with the winter play ranking as the highestgrossing winter play ever.

Band Director William Camp and Chorus Director Alexa Skelly also made similar pivots in their instruction and performances throughout the year — beginning with deciding how to safely conduct practices indoors. While band members began the year with their instruments encased in bags, Skelly purchased The Singer’s Mask for all her students — a mask that allowed more room to sing and was created as a fundraiser for the artisans of Broadway during its shutdown.

Members of the Upper School band perform the spring outdoor concert.

Both the band and chorus created videos of their usual holiday concerts that were distributed to the CFA community. However, as spring came and COVID cases dropped, Camp felt confident about holding an outdoor spring band concert. “That spring band concert was the first time we had heard a live audience in a year and it was overwhelming how much we had all missed it,” Fancy said. Reflecting on the year, CFA Drama Director Jennifer Avery said that while the year was a challenge it was rewarding to see the arts continue to thrive on campus. “I am so thrilled that not only our seniors and seasoned artists were so determined, amazing, and able to accomplish incredible things, but that new students were able to be introduced to the arts during this time,” Avery said. “Students who might have otherwise gotten lost socially and had trouble making friends in a new place with masks and distancing were able to express themselves and make incredible art, memories, and friendships.”

Members of the Middle and Upper School chorus perform the holiday concert, which was recorded and sent to CFA families.

UPPER SCHOOL

JUNIOR OUTDOOR EXPEDITION BLAZES NEW TRAIL

L

ike many other events around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the Upper School administration to rethink the annual Outward Bound trip for seniors that was traditionally scheduled for the end of September.

“It really did allow them to get to know students in their class they wouldn't have known.” Fee said. “I had some students in my group that really had not interacted before and they shared some things in our discussion circles that were profoundly personal that they bonded over.”

In examining the timing, Upper School Dean of Students Jamison Fee said the looming early action college admission date of October 1 for UNC system schools, and the fact that an SAT test was usually scheduled around that time, prevented some seniors from fully immersing themselves in the experience. Many Upper School administrators and faculty agreed, and the decision was made to shift the annual trip to be for juniors in the spring. In looking for an organization to partner with for the trip, Fee had to look no further than down Carolina Beach Road to The National Center for Outdoor & Adventure Education. Like Outward Bound, NCOAE leads groups of students on outdoor expedition trips and the company’s headquarters is in Wilmington. The first Junior Outdoor Expedition (JOE) trip took place in May 2021 for the CFA Class of 2022 around the Black Balsam trail in the Pisgah National Forest. Fee said there were many similarities between the Outward Bound and JOE trips, but without the stress the seniors felt. The junior class was able to have a bonding experience leading into their senior year.

Like the Outward Bound trips, the JOE also gives students a chance to prove themselves in unfamiliar circumstances.

“The students realize that you can get a lot done together in a group that you can not achieve by yourself,” Fee said “There is also a real physical understanding of taking care of each other because if someone gets sick or hurt everyone else has to pick up the slack. It is a very humbling experience and builds a lot of confidence.”

GENERATIONS OF GIVING THE IMPORTANCE OF PHILANTHROPY AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS

From left, Grant Peebles (Class of 2024), Gerald Cox, Davon Peebles (Class of 2021), Selby Peebles (Class of 2029), Melia Cox, Crystal Peebles, and Harrison Peebles.

W

ith three children enrolled in Cape Fear Academy for the 2020-2021 school year, Crystal and Harrison Peebles have witnessed the benefits of a Cape Fear Academy education at every level through Selby (Class of 2029), Grant (Class of 2024), and Davon (Class of 2021).

“I believe in a CFA education because of the superior quality of preparation for higher education the school provides to our children,” Harrison Peebles said. “I have seen first hand how ready my son was to attend [Auburn University] and succeed as an incoming freshman. Leadership is taught from Kindergarten through Senior year and the kids are ready for the next level.” One of the things that makes a Cape Fear Academy education so special is the long tradition of philanthropic giving on behalf of the parents, grandparents and friends of the school, Crystal Peebles said. Her parents, Melia and Gerald Cox have long supported their grandchildren’s educational experiences through philanthropic gifts.

“Others, before my family attended the school, helped to support by giving to the Annual Fund each year so my grandchildren have all of the benefits and great experiences that CFA offers,” Gerald Cox said. “I know I must continue this tradition for the future. Even if my grandchildren don't see the changes, others will. I am sure there will come a time when there is a great need for expansion or remodeling of the buildings and grounds and I want to ensure this happens successfully.” Thanks to generous donors like the Peebles and Cox families, Cape Fear Academy is able to successfully fulfill its mission to provide a personal educational experience for every student and prepare them for success in college and life. “The thing I value most at CFA is the effort the school puts into meeting each child's needs,” Crystal Peebles said. “I love all of the additional educational support available in every division like help sessions, tutoring, the writing center, the math lab and reading specialists are all wonderful additions, and help every child to improve and challenge them at all levels.”

To make your Annual Fund gift you can enclose your gift in the envelope included in this Annual Report, or visit capefearacademy.org/support to make a donation online.
