Marianne Drost

Can you tell us about your journey into tattooing? What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you get started?

A: I’ve always been creative, always loved drawing - both during class in school as a kid and in my free time. I dreamt of utilizing my creativity, doing what I love for a living, but I wasn’t sure if it was possible. I dabbled with thoughts of pursuing CGA (computer graphics artist) or design, but then got acquainted with the world of tattooing and immediately fell in love.

I got started by calling the local tattoo shop and asking if they needed an apprentice, they didn’t. Then I took my portfolio and went down there. When they saw my drawings, they suddenly needed an apprentice anyway.

Your work is known for its unique style. How would you describe your artistic approach, and what influences your designs the most?

A: I put a lot of love behind every piece and treat it like an unfolding story. I believe it shows when you put your heart into your work. I’m influenced by a lot of things; nature, life, series, games, books, other artists working in the same and different mediums. What is your favorite tattoo style to create, and why does it resonate with you? Are there any styles you hope to explore further in the future?

A: I have a soft spot for all things nerdy, cause I am one myself. I love how I can tap into an entire universe and create a store for my client. Animals, women’s faces and all things with exceptional lighting are also amazing to do. It’s an ever evolving thing, always wanting to create new exciting art.

As a tattoo artist, what does the creative process look like for you when working with a client, from idea to finished piece?

A: I’m so lucky that my clients trust me a whole lot, so I’m mostly just free to let my creativity take the lead. I always base the design on the description my clients give me; words of what the design should entail or a certain mood they wish me to capture. Luckily my gut feeling is correct 99% of the time, so the design that’s shown to the client on the day of the tattooing, is just what - or more than - they dreamt of.

You’ve likely had many memorable tattoo projects. Is there a specific tattoo or client story that stands out to you?

A: I am very social and so are many of my clients, so there’s a million heartfelt or fun moments shared between my clients and me throughout the course of for example an entire sleeve. By the end of a larger project like that, all the hours spent together, you know each other quite well.

Tattooing often comes with challenges, whether it's technical, creative, or emotional. What has been the most challenging aspect of your career, and how have you overcome it?

A: that would have to be; being around negative energy, being in studios where there’s a bad vibe, drama or where the artists don’t want to lift each other up. Overcame it simply by changing studios and finally by creating my very own studio

The tattoo industry is constantly evolving. What changes have you noticed in the industry over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future?

A: I’ve seen quite a few changes, both for the better and worse. I see it becoming even more individual, blurring the lines of styles / genres and breaking even more with the stereotype of ‘what tattoos are’

How did it feel to win not one, but two awards at the HCA INK Tattoo Convention in 2024?

A: It felt absolutely incredible! To have my work acknowledged by so many talented artists was an unforgettable experience. The HCA INK Tattoo Convention brings together some of the best in the industry, and to walk away with Second Place for both Best Small Tattoo and Best Realistic Tattoo was truly special It’s a reminder of how far I've come and the amazing community I’m a part of.

Having experienced both winning awards and being on the jury board, which experience do you prefer?

A: It’s two very different experiences, but I definitely would have to choose a jury. It fits me better being in that role at a convention, whereas I prefer working in the environment of my own studio. Being a part of the jury at Nordic Ink in 2021 was a whole vibe though It’s Denmark’s oldest tattoo convention, and the talent there is insane! The competition was fierce, but with my expertise, alongside other very experienced jury members, we were able to spot the best work and choose the winners Both experiences have shaped my journey - and I’m lucky to have had both.

Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring tattoo artists who are just starting their careers?

A: I always say the same to this question; draw, draw, draw! Practice on paper and learn about anatomy, shapes, light etc. before starting on skin. Secondly; trust your gut, find what works for you regarding technique, work environment and everything else that this business entails. It’s important to stay true to oneself.

Where Polynesian artistry meets French finesse, one inked story at a time!

Can you tell us about your journey into tattooing? What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you get started?

My journey began with my first tattoo experience, then a second, a third… I loved watching, analyzing every detail, and understanding the process. I first learned sculpting as an initial step into the world of creation. Later, I ventured into tattooing on my own, without a mentor to guide me. It wasn’t always easy—there were many moments of self-doubt—but perseverance kept me going, and it’s what brought me to where I am today.

Your work is known for its unique tribalism style. How would you describe your artistic approach, and what influences your designs the most?

I don’t like it when my work is called “tribal.” To me, the term lacks meaning. Polynesian tattooing, on the other hand, is full of symbolism and energy. Each pattern carries a meaning, a message, and that’s what inspires me. My creative process is deeply influenced by the client, their mood, and the vibrations of the moment. My creations are unique, designed in the here and now. They reflect the individual and the energy of the moment.

I'm not a fan of calling my work “tribal” – to me, that term feels too vague and lacks depth. Polynesian tattooing, however, is rich with symbolism and energy. Every pattern has a story, a message, and that’s what truly inspires me. My creative process is shaped by the client, their mood, and the energy of the moment. Each piece I create is unique, designed in the here and now, reflecting the individual and the vibe of that exact moment.

What is your favourite tattoo style to create, and why does it resonate with you? Are there any styles you hope to explore further in the future or is it only the tribal stuff that is your primary style?

Polynesian tattooing is still largely unknown and often undervalued, especially during tattoo conventions. There isn’t always a dedicated category for it, so we are often grouped into ornamental styles. Yet, Polynesian tattooing is incredibly rich and diverse My favorite style within this art is patutiki (the traditional tattooing of the Marquesas Islands). It resonates with me the most, although I truly appreciate all Polynesian styles. I’d also love to explore other genres like realism. I’ve already worked on pieces that combine Polynesian patterns with realistic elements like skulls or marine animals. These blends often create striking results.

As a tattoo artist, what does the creative process look like for you when working with a client, from idea to finished piece. Is it freehand or do you use more modern way to create unique designs?

-All my creations are drawn freehand. With Polynesian tattooing, using a stencil is impossible. Every story and every person is unique: their morphology, their curves, their size. The tattoo must follow the body’s natural lines. I also have a small ritual before starting: when a client arrives, we take time to chat over coffee. This allows me to immerse myself in their story, their personality, and begin visualizing their piece

You've likely had many memorable tattoo projects. Is there a specific tattoo or client story that stands out to you?

-[Sigh] Trick question, every encounter I’ve had through tattooing has been incredible. I’m deeply grateful to all my clients. Of course, some have stood out because of particularly moving, chaotic, or funny stories. But in truth, every journey is unique and brings something valuable to both them and me.

Tattooing often comes with challenges, whether it's technical, creative, or emotional. What has been the most challenging aspect of your career, and how have you overcome it?

Learning on my own was a real challenge. I had to teach myself about the patterns, their meanings, and the importance of their placement in a composition Everything must be coherent: the balance between the black ink, the patterns, the spaces, and the shading. In the beginning, it was difficult, and I made many mistakes. But working alone gave me an unwavering determination. It fueled my dream of success and my desire to be the best. Over time, self-reflection, observation, and perseverance allowed me to grow and improve

The tattoo industry is constantly evolving. What changes have you noticed in the industry over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future?

[Sigh] The tattoo world is evolving quickly. There are more and more tattoo artists, conventions, and training programs. I worry that, in the future, tattooing might lose its value or meaning. What will happen when everyone is tattooed and becomes a tattoo artist? Personally, I’m committed to preserving my culture and avoiding trends. Sometimes, people ask me to tattoo Polynesian designs in the shape of a palm tree, a cat, or a horse. Of course, I refuse! Yes, there are palm trees in Polynesia, but 300 years ago, our warriors didn’t tattoo palm trees on their bodies. Staying true to traditions is how I honor this art. instagram.com/temauritattoo/

SOILWORK

Soilwork is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Helsingborg. They have released twelve studio albums. In 1998, Soilwork added keyboardist Carlos Holmberg and bassist Ola Flink. The band recorded and released their debut album, Steelbath Suicide, in May of that year.

From 2000 to 2006, Soilwork experienced a rise to prominence in the melodic death metal scene. The band performed at Wacken Open Air and toured extensively with Annihilator and Nevermore.

In late 2001, Soilwork began recording Natural Born Chaos with Devin Townsend and Fredrik Nordström, released in early 2002. Artem Naumenko

Artem Naumenko, a talented artist from Ukraine, has a remarkable talent for photography. During his undergraduate studies, he gained valuable experience working in a photo studio before shifting his focus to tattooing. In 2021, Naumenko moved to Hamburg, Germany, where he took on the role of resident tattoo artist at HØØD7. From 2022 to 2024, he worked at the prestigious Der Grimm in Berlin, where he enjoyed an incredible experience and connected with many skilled artists. He actively participated in various art exhibitions and events, all while savoring the city's delicious organic cuisine. Felix Seele, co-owner of Der Grimm, warmly welcomed him to the studio, and Naumenko even became the face of one of Felix's recent fashion campaigns.

When did you start learning tattooing, and when did you become a professional?

I embarked on my tattooing journey in 2015, during my second year of college. I began by tattooing friends after classes and quickly recognized that this was my true passion. Over the next three years, I experimented with various styles, honed my techniques, and participated in workshops. I completed several masterclasses, including those at Mascot Tattoo Studio, with Alex Kosta at Kinky Needle Tattoo, and a session led by Vitaly Roy, earning official certifications in each. I fully immersed myself in the tattoo community to develop a unique and personal approach

By 2018, after years of dedication and practice, I had crafted a style that blended dynamic, fluid lines with striking contrasts, resulting in tattoos that elegantly highlighted the body's contours. My work began to attract attention from tattoo artists globally, leading to invitations for guest spots in countries such as Germany, France, Denmark, Switzerland, and Spain.

What are your favorite flowers for tattoos, and what do you appreciate about their composition?

My top choices for tattoo flowers are peonies and wildflowers, particularly cherry blossoms. Peonies resonate with my technique, which involves intricate layering and multiple steps. Once healed, they present a bold appearance The interplay of contrast within the petals, along with the dark and light gray shading, creates a soft yet impressively dimensional effect.

I also enjoy exploring compositions and how they interact with the body. When designing a tattoo, I aim to achieve a balance between these two aspects. A tattoo that enhances the body's natural curves and shapes, rather than appearing like a mere "sticker," is truly captivating.

You aim to create tattoos with a timeless quality, and while flowers are indeed classic, fine-line tattoos require significant care to maintain their appearance. How do you address this challenge?

You're correct that fine-line tattoos demand extra attention to preserve their quality over time. The longevity of these tattoos largely depends on the depth of the needle and the density of the pigment used. For instance, if the tattoo is applied too superficially with diluted pigment, the lines may fade and develop a dotted effect over time. This issue often arises from incorrect pigment ratios and inadequate needle depth. Although fine-line work may seem straightforward, it is highly intricate and requires extensive practice to perfect, as even minor errors can have lasting consequences.

I always share examples of healed tattoos with my clients at various stages and provide guidance on how to keep their tattoos looking sharp and vibrant over time. This not only reassures my clients but also helps them appreciate the artistry and care involved in maintaining their tattoos.

Teaching tattoo courses can be a contentious topic. Many from older generations are opposed to it, citing the oversaturation of tattoo artists in the industry. What is your viewpoint, and what benefits can you provide?

I understand that our industry sees a growing number of newcomers each year, and I believe tattooing has become much more accessible and streamlined over time. The landscape of the industry is vastly different from when I began nearly a decade ago. I still vividly recall the first time I encountered a tattoo machine—I didn’t even know how to turn it on! Back then, it was just a piece of metal (specifically, coil tattoo machines). Today, however, the industry is much more user-friendly. You no longer need exceptional technical skills to set up a machine or insert a needle. Like many other art forms, tattooing has evolved and gained significant momentum. Regarding teaching, I can understand why some tattooists may be reluctant to train others; they might worry about how it could impact their income or reputation. However, if someone is truly committed to becoming a tattoo artist, they will find a way to pursue that path, whether with guidance or by navigating the challenges independently.

In my view, fostering healthy competition is crucial, as it promotes growth and development for both individuals and the industry as a whole. The more artists who create beautiful, high-quality tattoos, the more professional and innovative talent we’ll see emerge. This generates a cycle of inspiration, personal growth, and advancement.

@saveriosaluzzi_tattoo

Can you tell us about your journey into tattooing? What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you get started and how long have you been working as a pro artist?

I’ve been fascinated about the tattoo world since I was 12 because of my uncle’s tattoos and about art since I was born I fell in love with it with the idea of having my own museums on the people walking in every side of the globe . I made it happen when I was 16 and buying my first kit I started tattooing myself ,then my friends after school and soon after the whole city . I moved out in Turin when I was 19 and kept doing my apprenticeship trying to steal wherever around me and after a few years I started traveling . Becoming a pro artist of such amazing brands was one of my dreams and hard to describe with words but is not something that can have a defined way to achieve , for sure requires a lot of effort around the tattoo events .

Your work is known for its unique warm coloured style. How would you describe your artistic approach, and what influences your designs the most?

The most important thing when I approach my design is to have a significant body flow around the unique shapes of the anatomy of every single customer. Also high contrast helps to have the subjects really impactive and vibrant .

What is your favourite tattoo style to create, and why does it resonate with you? Are there any styles you hope to explore further in the future?

I like to mix surrealistic subjects with calligraphy and dark ornaments , I think it really fits with me cause it’s as well evolving and changing constantly , including multiple styles and I’ll love to also go deeper with only dark ornaments and calligraphy projects in large scale as I do also only a surrealistic or realistic tattoo

As a tattoo artist, what does the creative process look like for you when working with a client, from idea to finished piece. Is it freehand or do you use more modern way to create unique designs?

My designs always come with a long thinking session behind them to offer something unique to my customers every time and then I use my iPad to do the main part of the visualization of the project. Once I print it on the customer then I always do a freehand drawing to better incorporate the calligraphy with the design and the design with the body

Tattooing often comes with challenges, whether it's technical, creative,or emotional. What has been the most challenging aspect of your career, and how have you overcome it?

Being a tattoo artist full time around Europe as I did requires lots of effort and sacrifices , I think the main one is that you have to assume that those sacrifices in terms of time , relationships and physical as well are really hard to face sometimes . You overcome it with discipline and dedication, they'll adjust your life towards what you want if you put the right effort

The tattoo industry is constantly evolving. What changes have you noticed in the industry over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future?

In my opinion in the last years the Industry is getting over Saturated by too many tattooers and getting flat at the same time cause everyone is copying each other , without anymore taking “healthy inspiration “ . Also I see much of this approach of getting the attention on social and getting fame from it and to the earning side first than to the tattoo quality .

Is something that little by little is hopefully going to educate customers to search for the right artists that can really offer them something unique

You've achieved remarkable success at Nordic Ink, winning First Best of Friday/First of Show in 2023 and First Best of Friday in 2024. What do you think contributed to your consistent performance at this particular convention?

Man, Nordic Ink has been incredible for me Snagging First Best of Friday and Best of Show in 2023 was mind-blowing It's all about pushing myself, you know? I pour my heart into every piece, trying to bring something fresh to the table each time For 2024, coming back and taking First Best of Friday again was just wow I think what's worked for me at Nordic Ink is really vibing with the energy there It's a place where you can go all out creatively, and the crowd appreciates that boldness I always try to bring designs that resonate with the Nordic aesthetic while still keeping my own style. It's a balance, but when it clicks, it's magic.

At the Epinal Tattoo Show 2024, you secured First Best of Saturday. How does this achievement compare to your successes at other conventions, and what makes the Epinal show unique?

Epinal was a whole different beast, man. Winning First Best of Saturday there in 2024 was huge for me. It's got this vibe that's hard to describelike you can feel the art history in the air, you know? Compared to Nordic Ink, Epinal challenges you to blend traditional art vibes with d h i h d f f hi h
