P A S T E L S Salon System nail expert Karen Louise, has created a gorgeous spring trend using GELLUX, just for us. We love the natural pink base! STEP 1 Prepare the nails and file to the desired shape. Then push back the cuticles and gently buff the nail plate. Brush away any dust and wipe over with the GELLUX Prep + Wipe. Apply the GELLUX Fast Bond and allow to dry.
STEP 3 Still using the GELLUX Piggy Pink, create a half French tip – a new twist on the classic French tip – using a small detailing brush and flash cure.
Next, it’s time to apply our base colour. Use a thin coat of GELLUX Cover Pink Base Coat and be sure to cap the edges before curing.
STEP 4
STEP 2 Apply a small amount of GELLUX Piggy Pink to a palette, and, using a small detailing brush create a half moon shape at the cuticle on the pinky finger and cure.
Continue the above step for each nail using GELLUX Once Floral on the ring finger and GELLUX Tease Me Teal. Flash cure in between each design and then do a full cure once the tips are done.
STEP 5 Repeat the same step using GELLUX Freeze Frame on the index finger and GELLUX Gossip Girl on the thumb. Flash cure in between each design and then do a full cure after the tips are done.

“After lockdown, people will be craving a fresh new style, we’ll be seeing brighter and bolder colours. Face frames and money pieces have been a massive trend but I think we’re going to see a reverse version that’s darker and more tonal at the front to create the face frame and lighter on the rest of the hair.” Stephanie Peckmore, Head of Colour at Bad Apple Hair, @stephpeckmore “Last year’s copper hair trend is going nowhere but we’ll also be welcoming in the new pastels, particularly pink. Perhaps the most important trend to identify is that our clients want more; their hairdressing appointment, while traditionally a bit of ‘alone time’, has taken on a whole new dimension. It’s up to us to transform not just their look, but also, when necessary, their mood.” Paddy McDougall, Indola Global Ambassador, @paddymcdougall “Technique-wise, it’s all about the money piece – it’s going to be bigger than ever! As clients don’t always know when their next salon visit will be, the money piece is an easy way to feel lighter without the worry of up-keep. The technique frames the face perfectly and gives your client that much needed boost of vibrancy.” Joseph l’Anson, Mark Leeson, @markleeson68 “I have always championed silver hair, and it’s great to see that pantone has named Ultimate Gray as one of its 2021

“Bronde is making a huge comeback and with the options of glosses, toners and tinted conditioners, clients can now spice up their balayage easily. It’s great to see everyone embracing warm tones and we’re expecting a lot of peachy ‘bronde' this spring. Expect lots of variations and pops of colour based on the ‘90s chunky face framing technique.” Amy Webb, Owner of Candy Art Hair, @candy_hairart
shades. This spirited and emboldened shade will really help to satisfy our clients’ quest for vitality and the natural and neutral tones it offers will give clients a feeling of resilience. Metallic silver is the next level of chic, and can really help to bring a haircut to life, but if your client has a warmer skin tone then a peachy silver tone will be perfect.” Thomas Hill, @thomashillshair "For SS21 I am predicting everything bold and bright! Self-expression is going to be more important than ever and what better way to do it than with strong, vivid colours? My favourite trend is two-toned vivids - think coloured roots or multi-coloured ends. For those who want to stick with natural tones, a balayage with a super chunky, statement money piece in the front is the perfect solution.” Rachel White, Head of Colour at Bloggs Salons, @rachelwhitehair

London-based Pedro Plastic is a self-titled hair activist who’s on a mission to make an impact. Here he shares his journey in colour and why Pulp Riot is his colour partner of choice.
WHERE I STARTED In 2007/2008 I was studying Design back in Aveiro, Portugal, where I’m originally from. I knew I wanted to be creative and as my mum was a hairdresser with her own salon, something just clicked and I became curious about all the amazing techniques and colours. I decided to study hairdressing and by the time I finished my NVQ, I had begun working evenings and Saturdays at my mum’s salon. However, the real journey started when I moved to Porto as an assistant.
MY BEST CAREER DECISION Moving from my hometown to a bigger city added something different to my career, but I always felt that it wasn’t enough, so I decided to move to London in 2017. Once again, I had to start over, but this time with another language. I remember how excited and happy I was, just 16
I B I L I T I E S
doing my best to learn new techniques and enrich my creativity with the best hairdressers in the U.K. That’s what led me to Pulp Riot, where I found a community so strong, it elevated me as an artist and educator.
WHAT MADE ME WANT TO BECOME A FREELANCER It was definitely the biggest and the most scary decision I’ve ever made, but I wanted to take control of my own career, and be my own boss. Working for brands like Pulp Riot and Brazilian Bond Builder (B3) requires availability for shows and education classes but I couldn’t balance that with being a salon manager; I felt so overloaded with work. So, I decided to start from scratch, moving to a new salon as a freelancer. I was scared that I’d lose
all my clients moving to a new shop, but when you have such a good relationship with your clients they will follow you wherever you are. I believe that if you really want to do something you should just do it; it’s better to risk everything and try, than to risk your dreams by just imagining what could be.
THE TRENDS AND TONES MY CLIENTS ARE ASKING FOR RIGHT NOW I have a very diverse clientele, but the technique I use the most has to be balayage; people love the fact that they don’t have to compromise their own regrowth. Personally, I’m absolutely obsessed with blondes and I believe that’s where your knowledge as an artist is truly tested. Even if I do a creative rainbow colour, I need a solid canvas underneath, so my blond base has to be
perfect. Rose golds and icy tones are especially popular right now!
WHY I’M FASCINATED WITH COLOUR Colour is an expression of emotions and I like to show that. Colour is everywhere we look, from seeing a landscape to a piece of art in a gallery, everything is about colour. The power of the colours can easily change your mood or emotions. From red tones that make you feel warm to blue shades making you feel colder, for example – the possibilities are endless, and that’s why I love working with Pulp Riot. Find Pedro on Instagram @pedro_ plastic, and follow @pulpriotuk and @capitalhair. Stay tuned for tons of interactive and educational live classes throughout 2021! 17

HOW TO BE A
BALAYAGE Bad Apple
Schwarzkopf Professional
Rianna Henry
Schwarzkopf Professional
BOSS IN 2021
We spoke with Rianna Henry and Samantha Cusick about why Balayage is still the perfect low maintenance go-to for clients. WHY IS BALAYAGE THE PERFECT LOW-MAINTENANCE OPTION FOR CLIENTS STILL UNABLE TO GET TO THE SALON? Rianna: It’s perfect for clients because you don’t have to touch up the roots every 4-6 weeks and it’s really easy to maintain. Samantha: Balayage Rianna really has been a blessing for clients during the periods of time they couldn’t get to see their hairdressers, it’s down to it being relatively low Samantha maintenance. The way it seamlessly blends with a natural base colour means that clients aren’t at the mercy of their regrowth and reaching for those dreaded box colours.
WHAT AT-HOME PRODUCTS SHOULD SALONS BE ADVISING CLIENTS TO USE TO MAINTAIN BALAYAGE AT HOME? Rianna: My number one recommendation would be Olaplex; it’s going to strengthen and keep the hair in great condition. 18
I would also recommend a toning shampoo either to keep blondes blonder or to take out the red tones on a brunette balayage. Samantha: Here at Samantha Cusick London, we offer a bespoke Olaplex No5 mask. We blend pigments into the No5 that can neutralise, enhance or create a new tone in clients’ hair, making it easier for clients to look after their hair colour at home.
ANY TRENDS OR CHANGES FOR BALAYAGE COME SS21? Rianna: I definitely predict more curly girls going for balayage as it gives a pop of colour. Samantha: I always find that clients are much more reactive to inspiration they see on social media. This connection is why balayage will have a firm place in SS21. It’s so easy to update the technique to suit whatever trend (or micro trend) presents itself; whether that’s through heavy placement and bigger roots for a ‘90s lived-in look, a soft baby pink toner for a fantasy vibe or simply updating their toner to reflect the season’s must-have hazelnut or baby blonde tones.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE TREND FOR BALAYAGE IS SO ENDURING? Rianna: From a stylist’s point of view it’s so much more creative than highlights and the possibilities are endless when it comes to placement. For clients, it gives that sun-kissed, natural and lasting look that doesn’t take up all their free time at the salon. Samantha: I believe that clients continue to opt for balayage as it fits around their modern, busy lifestyle. Sure, we’d all like to have the time to visit the salon every six weeks for four or more hours, but it’s just not practical for most. Between juggling careers, kids, a busy social life and a global pandemic, time to get our hair done can be a precious commodity. With balayage, you can have beautiful hair, painted by your colourist in a way that is specific to you and your hair, and looks chic in between salon visits with minimal maintenance. ALL ABOUT
All imagery: The Glamour Room
E Y E S
It’s said that trends and innovation are often born out of necessity, and that certainly holds true when it comes to lashes and brows in 2021. With most of their faces being covered by masks – no matter how embellished and colourful – many of your clients will choose to show their individuality via their eyes this season. Here we talk to the experts to find out how to make the most of this eye-catching trend. 20
BROWS NOW!
“Brow trends will be strong, with a full brow dominating the eyes,” says Salon System Educator and Brow and Lash Expert Lisa Stone. Lisa forecasts that brow lamination will soon be your most requested brow treatment: “This is the perfect treatment not just for already full brows, but it works so well on thinner brows too, giving the illusion of more definition and volume. Brow Lamination allows us to create bigger, more bold, voluminous brows.” Colour is going to play even more of a role in how clients view their brows, says Lisa. “Precision tinting and custom colour blending with many different coloured brow tints to create harmonising or exotic colours to the brow will make a statement and frame the eyes, but also the face. We’re definitely looking at creating a little more drama than the more natural brow trends of the past year,” she says. Finally, Lisa says it’s time to start educating your clients on how important it is to invest in professional lash and brow services: “Never before have lashes and brows been such a focal point of the face – those little mistakes of overplucking and misshapen DIY treatments will simply stand out too much. Now’s the time to stick with the professionals.” @lisaobrienstone/@salonsystem Listen out for more of Lisa’s brow and lash tips on The Capital Cut Podcast!
MAKEUP ESSENTIALS
“With more than half of our faces now being covered by a mask, the eyes have become the focus and making them look as amazing as possible can really lift my clients’ spirits. A good eye brightening concealer, mascara and a waterproof eye pencil or eyeliner is all we need when it comes to makeup,” says celebrity makeup artist Sue Marshall.
Sue advises upping the lash factor by applying a pop of colour via a bright eyeshadow or eyeliner and applying extra mascara to the outer corners of your clients’ eyes. She also suggests adding some half lashes for extra impact if your client has an event that will see them wearing a mask. “And remember,” says Sue; “there is some fantastic inspiration on Instagram and via YouTube videos that will inspire you to play with eye makeup techniques and ensure that your clients’ glam routine is COVID-19 friendly! A little sparkle can really make those Zoom meetings something to look forward to.” @suemarshall
NEW FOCUS
For Krystal Prince, beauty therapist and owner of The Glamour Room, this isn’t a time to get upset over your seemingly redundant lipstick collection – instead, it’s time to focus on the eyes, one of her favourite areas of the face to treat. “Eye treatments and makeup trends will become more creative this year. As a professional therapist, lockdown has been an opportunity to really practice and experiment with new techniques. If you’ve ever struggled with giving your client that perfect winged liner now’s the time to head to places like YouTube and Instagram and work on having a steady hand!” says Krystal. When it comes to salon treatments, Krystal says more clients are choosing low maintenance options: “We’re seeing more interest in lash lifting, a lower maintenance option for clients who have chosen to embrace their natural lashes, rather than going for lash extensions. “As for brows; brow lamination is the top trend. I think at first people were apprehensive as they assumed brow lamination was purely for those who wanted a bushy brow look, but now clients are more educated and familiar with the treatment they realise it can also help to tame and perfect the brows.” @the_glamour_room 21

While we’re still in the midst of a global pandemic now is the time to re-learn and reinvigorate yourself, ready for your clients. If you need an update on what’s new in the waxing world, read on for Aesthetic Therapist Sarah Hurst’s take on 2021 waxing trends. 22

ONCE WE GET SOME KIND OF MOMENTUM GOING AGAIN IN THE BEAUTY WORLD, WHAT KIND OF WAXING TRENDS AND TECHNIQUES ARE GOING TO BE MOST POPULAR?
treatment, particularly on men’s chests and backs, and Strip Wax is great for blending areas.
premium as we need to spend more of it cleaning in between clients, meaning we see less people in a day. There’s quite an art to speed waxing so I would recommend that all practitioners book themselves in for some advanced training, to bring their skills up to date so they can meet the demand.
The trend for intimate areas has been moving away from the pencil thin runway and is moving towards a more natural-looking, but neat, triangular shape on the pubic mound. Clients have gotten more used to a ‘natural’ look during lockdown and shows like Love Island have popularised the wearing of the high leg bikini.
IS THERE ANYTHING NEW/EMERGING IN THE WORLD OF WAXING THAT The trend will move towards PROFESSIONALS SHOULD speed waxing. Time is now at a KNOW ABOUT?
There’s also a movement towards hot waxing for all areas of the body, as it can be far less painful than traditional strip waxing. Waxes have become a lot more flexible, making them easier to apply. They also don’t dry as quickly or become brittle, which makes the wax easier to remove.
LET’S TALK PRODUCT: WHICH TYPES OF WAXES SUIT PARTICULAR TREATMENTS OR EVEN PARTICULAR CLIENTS? Hot wax has been growing in popularity over the last few years. It’s the only type of wax that I would recommend for sensitive and intimate areas, as it shrink wraps around the hairs and doesn’t adhere to the skin in the same way, leaving much less trauma and irritation. It’s also great for grabbing those shorter hairs that can be notoriously tricky! Also, despite the fact that it’s labelled as ‘Hot Wax’, it actually has a low temperature melting point and isn’t hot at all, so I use it for both male and female intimate waxing. You can find everything you need for your waxing clients at your local Capital store and online at capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk or capitalhairandbeauty.ie
For larger areas, Strip Wax is often a more practical option, but again, hot wax could be a preference for these areas. I often use both during a
ON AN INTIMATE NOTE When it comes to intimate waxing, clients should be advised to avoid sexual activity; although they’re probably eager to road test their new look, any activity that causes friction could aggravate the area. Clients should also immediately put on fresh underwear post-wax. Bacteria and dead skin cells can collect in clothes even if they’ve showered that day. Finally, clients should avoid scratching or touching the treated area with unwashed hands and take particular care with cleanliness after using the toilet. Follow Sarah and her work on Instagram @sarahhurstskinclinic and find us @capitalhair!
WHY LOOKS WA X IS THE ONE YOU CAN RELY ON The Looks range offers very high performance depilatory waxes. Based on a premium soft wax which uses specially stabilised raw materials, it means that the hair is grabbed right from the base - and not the skin! Many other waxes on the market are often softer and stickier, and end up stretching like chewing gum - which doesn’t support the skin. There are two new products from Looks; one soft wax and one hard wax, both of which are based on synthetic resins and can therefore be considered allergen-free and more suited to sensitive skin. Ultimately, what you should be looking for is a wax brand that use the highest quality raw materials, made by a manufacturer who won’t compromise on quality. The Looks range of waxes is tested to incredibly tight specifications which means that you, the beauty therapist can be confident that every batch is identical in performance.
