WHAT’S HAPPENING AT C APITAL AND BE YOND
Celebrating 65 years of Capital Hair & Beauty!
WE’RE CELEBRATING! Who would have thought, back in 1954 that the Capital brand would become what it is today? Back then, when we were founded by Michael Vans Agnew, we were actually known as D.E.L Supplies; the name came from Diamond Edge Limited which provided hairdressing, animal grooming and other products from Regency Square in Brighton.

It was in the 1980s that we began trading as Capital Hair & Beauty, with a new logo to match! Our first Cash & Carry wholesale outlet opened, and we soon became the first in the business to start trading on a Sunday. It was also within this decade that Michael’s sons, Peter and Hamish, joined the company. Today, the Capital Group has branches across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and we’ve loved every minute of every new launch. We couldn’t have got this far without your amazing custom, so thank you and here’s to 65 more years!

TO START, AT THE TOP SECTION Create a zig zag Mohawk, taking equal parts from either side of the parting and crown area.
THIS ISSUE WE’VE GOT A PULP RIOT SPECIAL!
THIS WHOLE SECTION IS ONE COLOUR
• • •
Lilac 60g Blush 30g Cupid 10g *Mix up more if needed
If you don’t already know, Pulp Riot is a brand that thrives on giving colourists the most vibrant, bold colour to play with, so this issue we’re sharing two amazingly creative looks. First up, check out this pink and purple men’s colour creation, from Hive Hair Salon’s Lexie Shay Rabbett.
FOR THE UNDERNEATH SECTIONS Take diagonal back to back slices, working back from the hair line around the face, following the head shape until you run out of hair. I used the same colour as the top section around the hair line, so when the client’s hair is worn up it creates a really nice effect. You can use any variations of colour but make sure they complement one other.
LOOK #1
FOR THESE SECTIONS I USED
• • • •
FORMULA 1: 18g Lilac + 2g Velvet FORMULA 2: Blush STEP 1 – PRE-LIGHTEN
Now it’s the fun part! I blast dried the hair, before applying Formula 1 (listed above) to the root area, roughly 2cm wide. I put a lot of emphasis on the roots to create a softer shadow effect. Next, I scattered Formula 2 throughout ends at random positions. On the ends that were left out, I melted the base colour with my fingers using the pinch technique; you 10
Powder Lemon and Fireball Lemon
All colours are applied to clean, dry hair, processed for 25 minutes and rinsed with cool water before being blow dried and styled.
STEP 2 - TONING
STEP 3 - SEMI PERMANENT COLOUR
• • •
Using a diagonal section pattern means that when the hair falls down you get lots of different colours falling on top of each other – such a great look!
With this look I started from a natural level 6 with pre-lightened ends. Using #blondeAF lightener + 20 volume on regrowth, I lifted the colour to a level 10 pale yellow.
After rinsing and shampooing, I applied 5g ICY High Speed Toner + 10g 6 Volume to towel dried hair for five minutes, to create an even toned canvas. Once the five minutes are up, rinse and shampoo.
Powder and Blush Blush Lilac and Cupid Aquatic
pinch the hair using your thumb and index finger at the base and pull colour out towards the ends. Let the colour develop for up to 40 minutes for optimal colour longevity.
Super-effective and easy but creates an amazing effect!

STEP 4 – RINSE It’s time to remove the excess colour with a cool, high pressure rinse. No conditioner needed, so just style as required! @hair_by_lexieshay Hive Hair Salon, Leeds

4:45am: My alarm goes off – ouch! Mondays mean I’m off to London for my week of meetings and events. At 6am it’s time to hop on the Eurostar to London from Paris; I’ve been living in Paris for three years now and the commute can get tiring. 9am: Arrive at my first meeting with the builders. The new salon in Wimbledon is opening and there are some major snagging issues. Next, I need to meet the Marketing Director to discuss our new social media and events plans for the next quarter. 12pm: Coffee with the General Manager of Elys department store to discuss a partnership before catching up on emails and phone calls. 2:30pm: Meeting at the Gina Conway Academy. I check out the students’ work and see if they have any thoughts or ideas about what they want to see in their classes. 4pm: I plan the week ahead while getting my hair blow dried at our Blow Dry Bar. 6pm: Go to Sticks and Sushi for dinner and finish up emails for the day! 9pm. Indulge in watching The Office for a bit of a relaxation. 10:30pm: Bed!
TUESDAY 7am: Wake up, coffee and meditation. 9:30am: I decide to hold an all Managers meeting on a whim. I meet with HR, Marketing, the General Manager, Managing Director, all Salon Managers, Spa Managers, the Education Manager and Assistant Managers! Together we go through numbers for the week, discuss HR issues, recruitment, an advanced education schedule, review 12
the week and plan the month. 12pm: Visit the Fulham salon to design the new Academy space and meet the landlord for approval. 5:30pm: It’s time to get ready for an education event tonight. My team are doing a show at the Fellowship and I am going as a spectator this time!
WEDNESDAY 7am: Wake up, coffee, meditate. 8am: More coffee; we had a late night celebrating the great teamwork at the Fellowship night. 9am: Clients in Westbourne Grove salon. I still love working on my own clients. I have so many loyal guests
GINA’S ADVICE
“Stick to your vision. Don’t be afraid to be different. Set yourself apart for all the right reasons. And above all else, be kind.“ that I have had for over 15 years. I think I really come alive when I’m behind the chair. 2pm: Sneaky little lunch in the office. 3pm: Meeting at our Barber Shop with a gents clothing line to discuss a partnership with them, as well corporate members club benefits for their staff and clients. 5pm: Rushing as I’m late for the launch of the new salon in Elys in Wimbledon! We invited over 200 guests to join us at the new salon/blow dry bar’s grand opening. We’re offering complimentary treatments, goodie bags, nibbles and
prosecco. I put my makeup on while I’m on the tube! 9:30pm: Time to clean up. What a night! A very full-on night of influencers and VIPs and all of my fabulous clients.
THURSDAY 8am: I slept in – rare! Now: coffee, meditate and emails in bed… 10am: Get up, sort out the induction program with my HR manager and look over how we can make the team even more connected to the brand. We talk through perks, education, incentives and coaching plans to help them achieve their goals. I love it. 5pm: Back to Paris for the weekend. 6pm: Sitting in the lounge with my glass of Champagne – the bartender knows me so well now, he has it ready for me on every trip! 11pm: Sleep.
FRIDAY 6am: Up early as usual. I do a bit of meditation to start the day. Need to have a calm mind as there’s a lot going on this week! 7am: Wake up the kids. Jake brings me my coffee as usual; he’s 10, and sets up breakfast for all six of us. He gets ready before anyone else is up (except me) so he has time to play Fortnite! 8am: Kids off to school with the au pair. Now I have to walk the dog. 9am: Plan the day. 10am: Tennis! Great to get all of that stress out! 11:30am: I see a client at her house. 3:30pm: Kids home for the weekend! 4pm: Cuddles, homework, healthy meal, movie night with little ones. 10pm: Bed! 13

Dr Paw Paw Original Balm
Pulp Riot Colour
It’s a multi-purpose fragrance-free balm that the whole family can use, even my little boy, who has very sensitive skin. I use it as an intense hydration treatment on my face; I put a thick layer on before bedtime and the next morning my skin is so soft and hydrated. Just be sure to let the product sink in before you hit the pillow or you will stick to your pillow! Ruth MastersPiggott, Regional Manager
Pulp Riot is by far the best fashion colouring system I have ever used. The results are exceptional; colours are true to swatch and they leave the hair soft and shiny. I used the shades Blush and Mercury on myself recently and was equally impressed with the result and condition. The product works best on a base 10 or pre-lightened hair and faded evenly to a pastel version of the original colour which is great! Liz Smith, Brighton Store
Goldwell Dualsenses Just Smooth Taming Oil I’ve used many of the oils we stock at Capital over the last 10 years and this is the lightest, yet most effective. Used on towel-dried hair before blow drying helps to smooth and tame unruly, fluffy ends and you can apply more when dry. Liz Smith, Brighton Store
Marvelash Eyelash Extensions
Beauty Pro Foot & Callus Peel
Marvelash have an incredible quality about their extensions that I can’t always find in other brands. There are loads of different styles to choose from, each in different curl grades. Even my clients notice when I’m using Marvelash extensions on them, because they’re so weightless. This has caused less irritability and therefore, a longer-lasting lash, as they’re not fiddling with uncomfortable lashes anymore. Georgia Saunders, Brighton Store
This product will leave you speechless. Your hard skin and cracked heels will just peel off and you’ll be left with baby soft feet. Ruth Masters -Piggott, Regional Manager

BUSINESS WHAT PROCESSES DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY AWARE OF SOMETHING NOT WORKING?
WHAT’S THE BEST THING TO DO IF SOMEONE, OR SOMETHING ISN’T WORKING OUT?
help. Gavin Mills, Managing Director, Bad Apple Hair Group, @badapplehair
One of my business mottos is: ‘if things aren’t working, change people. If they still don’t work, change the people.’ To excel in any kind of business it is important to understand what motivates your team and how to get the most out of them. If a member of our team isn’t pulling their weight or seems unhappy in their role then we spend time with them to figure out what is wrong and how we can
I don’t believe in just ‘getting rid’. If something is not working, before I remove the problem I reassess it and try and clarify what the problem is. I take the time to look at the problem and evaluate it, making changes where needed. There is nothing to be gained by rushing and just removing someone. Gary Taylor, Edward & Co, @edcohair
To ensure that the business is constantly developing and evolving we have put processes in place that monitor and report what is working and what isn’t. Part of this is software that has been developed in-house that gives me a live 360-degree view of the business and enables me to see a clear financial and datadriven picture – which has been vital to ensure that we are reactive and responsive to all the elements that keep us at the forefront of the hairdressing industry. Gavin Mills, Managing Director, Bad Apple Hair Group I keep a very close eye on everything from team members doing everything correctly, to the colours that are not being used to stop us over-stocking products.
I watch the appointment system both at the salon and I have access to it on my phone . Client retention, salaries, accounts: I make sure I know what is going on with all of them on a daily/weekly basis. Gary Taylor, Edward & Co My time working in advertising has taught me not to rely too heavily on systems and processes. They can be too easy to hide behind and obscure poor performance. Far better that all your team have a clear understanding of what the purpose of your business is and that they have had clear training on what is expected of them. You train your staff, you encourage them, you give them confidence, responsibility and your complete trust. You reward them and you care for them – you create a team that is passionate, confident and totally trustworthy. If you get this all right, you might find you have few staff issues, as anyone who can’t grasp what you’re aiming for won’t stay long. Michael Smith, Tristan Eves, @tristaneveshair 19

FORWARD
CHRIS SOUTHERN: These days I feel like everything is going from catwalk to consumer in a matter of minutes, thanks to the birth of the Instagram generation. We now have Instagram gurus to feed clients the information as it happens, creating tutorials and trend-based images for their followers.
Fashion and hair are two things that are forever intertwined. When a new look arrives on the catwalk, you can bet it will change how we play with hair on the high street, months later. Both of these creative industries are influenced by global trends, and yet, at the same time, they also influence each other. We spoke to two of ghd’s Brand Warriors: Chris Southern at Headmasters, and Andrea Daley at Barbara Daley, to discuss how fashion and hair work and play together.
FOR HAIRDRESSERS WHO WANT TO STAY AHEAD AND KEEP FASHION AS AN INFLUENCE ON THEIR WORK, WHERE’S A GOOD PLACE FOR INSPIRATION BUT ALSO PRACTICAL,
I’m constantly looking to the current generation of celebrity hairstylists. Their Instagrams are gold mines full of tips and tricks to create the current trends, whether it’s colour, cool hair accessories, or the best tools and products to recreate the look. My go-to stylists are Aaron Carlo @ aaroncarlohair, Chris Appleton @chrisappleton1, Dominick Serna @DomDomHair and Siobhan Jones @shivvvey.
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR HAIRDRESSERS TO BE AWARE OF FASHION TRENDS? IF AT ALL?
clients, while some love the flexibility of freelance… I really think it depends what kind of hairdresser you are, but I know for me, staying on-trend is what my clients need and want.
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE HAIR PREDICTION FOR AUTUMN? AD: After years of clients wanting icy, grey colours we’ve gone full circle and it’s all about bronzed hair for Autumn. Also, hair is getting shorter and shorter, with celebs like Dua Lipa and Katy Perry proving short hair can be super sexy. CS: It’s hard to choose, but my fave would be the wet look. It’s back and slightly different this time. We’ve gained a side parting and a slightly different texture, created by waving the hair with my ghd platinum+ and using just oils and serums, instead of water, to create that wet illusion.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A TREND TO MOVE FROM THE CATWALK TO THE HIGH STREET? ANDREA DALEY: I usually find it takes about six months for catwalk looks to filter through to our clients. It used to take a lot longer, but with the power of social media our fashion savvy clientele can see what’s hot instantly, so everything speeds up. Catwalks show the trends for Autumn/Winter in February and Spring/Summer in September, so generally, people see a new trend on the runway but wait until the actual season is upon us to adopt it. This February we saw lots of futuristic finger waves at Fendi and JW Anderson, fierce crops at Vivienne Westwood, and extreme texture at Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu. I can’t wait to introduce elements of these to our clients. 20
FACTUAL INFORMATION? AD: Instagram is a fantastic way to stay ahead of the game if you’re interested in catwalk hair. I follow all of the major session stylists, including Sam McKnight, Guido Palau and Eugene Souleiman, as often they will put hints and tips on their feed about the looks they’re creating, before their ideas even come to the catwalk. I also keep up to date by reading Vogue and The Cut online, both of which give lots of info about creating catwalk looks. Finally, ghdhair.com is brilliant for giving step-bystep advice on how to recreate looks from the catwalk. CS: As a young hairdresser,
AD: I definitely think stylists should be aware of what the trends in fashion are; your clients will know, so it’s important you do too! It also influences all the things we see in the shops, which again is important to clients as they want to match their hair to what they’ll be wearing. Choosing a style that suits your client’s hair and lifestyle is always better than following fashion though, so be aware of trends while still doing what you love. CS: There are all different kinds of hairdresser; some of us love fashion and trends, others love their job because of the relationships with

AT HOME AND AT WORK Autumn can be one of those tricky times for your clients’ skin. The temperature changes on a daily basis can see us reaching for a refreshing skin mist one day, and craving serious hydration the next. Add to this the daily stressors our skin has to deal with, and it’s easy to see why skin can become temperamental. Read on to learn more about seasonal skin issues, and how to combat them. 22
You might think that working indoors or taking the day off means you’re helping your skin out, but, during the cooler months you might need to pay even closer attention. If we happen to be indoors during the Summer, we tend to rely on the surplus heat from outside to keep our homes cosy, but once that temperature gauge starts going down come Autumn, we tend to reach for our creature comforts of central heating and heated blankets. While these make us feel all warm and cocooned, they’re actually seriously drying our skin out. Add to this the
impact of cold weather once we leave that cocoon, and your skin will be crying out for moisture!
QUICK FIX: For clients with already dry skin, going for a heavier, more luxurious skin cream is usually the easiest option. However, for clients with blemish-prone or oily skin, now is the time to prescribe something that gives them hydration, minus the oil. There are some brilliant, water-based moisturisers on the market, many of which work really well 23

BEAUTY
GENTLE DETOX: Thanks to the build-up of dull, dry skin that often occurs at this time of year, it’s vital to remove it efficiently, but also in a way that suits your clients’ skin type. Advise your clients on the differences between chemical (usually a liquid or mask containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids or Beta Hydroxy Acids applied to the skin) and physical exfoliation (a gel, lotion or mask containing ideally natural grains that physically remove dead skin cells) and help them choose the right course of action. For more serious cases, depending on just how dry your clients’ skin is, you might want to send them to a qualified dermatologist for a more in-depth chemical peel. It’s a great way to really slough off the dead skin and prep it to take in all the hydration it needs.
when layered with other products. If you have clients dealing with pre-existing conditions such as Rosacea or Dermatitis, advise them to come in for a skin analysis, to see what changes should be made to their skincare regime.
REGULAR TREAT: Now is the time to enrol clients into a seasonal facial program. How about encouraging them to sign up for six months worth of facials? They can book in for one each month, and each time you could prescribe a different treatment, based on their needs that day. Not only is this a great way for you to help them deal with seasonal changes, you’ll be able to see the difference in your profit forecasts too.
Outdoors In some parts of the world, the season of autumn means spending more time outdoors; suddenly a hike is more bearable, as the heat and the sun’s harmful UV rays have decreased. But that doesn’t mean skin is any less at risk from the elements. Increased time spent outside means that skin can become prone to dryness, dullness, sun spots, flaking and irritation. Those with pre-existing chronic conditions could have an even tougher time, especially when those Autumn winds kick in! It’s all part of the skin getting readjusted to the seasonal change, but with the right products, it doesn’t have to be quite so painful.

THE BASICS
If you do nothing else, at least do this:
Retinol
HYDRATE – Encourage clients to up their water intake – sitting at home with the heating on will zap the moisture from their skin.
SPF – No matter what day or month it is, SPF of at least 15 is advised, but to be honest, nothing beats factor 50 if you and your clients are serious about protecting skin from skin cancer as well as wrinkles.
This is the cure-all anti-ageing ingredient that everyone should be using, and our favourite way to use Retinol right now has to be HOF’S RETINOL VITAMIN NIGHT CREAM. Light, nongreasy and non-oily, this is a great all-rounder for those new to Retinol, but please ensure you advise them to wear SPF. £14.00

HYDRATION: advise clients – if they haven’t already – to add a hydrating serum to their routine. There are tons to choose from, and many of them also have other added bonuses such as brightening the skin, fading age spots or blemish control.

Everyone’s talking about The Manicure Company’s Builder Base right now. Read on to find out exactly how to use it… Perform a manicure. Firstly, cleanse, and disinfect your client’s hands. Next, shape the nail and remove any cuticle growth with a cuticle pusher. Ensure all matter is removed from the nail plate.
2
It’s time to prep the nail. Remove any surface shine from the nail plate with The Manicure Company’s Pro File in Grit 180/240. It’s important to remember not to use a file with a grit lower than 180, as this could damage the nail. Make sure the entire surface of the nail is buffed.
B Y
B U I L D E R 26
leave nails with a natural finish, or carry on to the next step. Note: You can apply more than 1 layer if you want Builder Base to act as a gel overlay; just be sure to cure each layer.
3
Dehydrate the nail by wiping it with a lint-free pad soaked in Pro Prep and Wipe Solution. The nail will appear chalky and white.
4
Base Coat is applied as it acts as a medium to help the rigid Build Base flex with the natural nail. Apply 1 layer of regular gel polish base coat. Ensure you cap the free edge and make sure not to flood the cuticle or side walls. Cure for 60 seconds using The Manicure Company Dual Pro Lamp, or 120 seconds if you’re using a UV lamp.
5
Now it’s time to use Builder Base, which can be used for extensions and under gel polish. First, apply an even layer of Builder Base over the entire nail plate, capping the free edge. Start by placing the loaded brush at the centre of the nail and push back towards the cuticle. Draw the brush down the nail for an even coat. Ensure the cuticle and side walls are free from product before curing for 60 seconds using The Manicure Company Dual Pro Lamp, or 120 seconds if you’re using a UV lamp. You can stop here to
6
Gel polish; once the Builder Base layer has been cured, you can go in with your first layer of polish. You should leave the Builder Base inhibition layer on the nail as this will help ensure a tight bond between the gel polish and Builder Base. Be sure to cap the free edge with your gel polish layers. Cure your gel polish for 60 seconds using The Manicure Company Dual Pro Lamp, or 120 seconds if you’re using a UV lamp. Repeat this step 1-2 times until you achieve the desired opacity.
7
Top coat; apply a generous layer of No Wipe or regular top coat to the entire nail, capping the free edge. Make sure your application is neat and the product hasn’t flowed to the cuticle or side walls. Cure for 60 seconds using The Manicure Company Dual Pro Lamp, or 120 seconds if you’re using a UV lamp.
8
The finishing touch! Once the nails have cooled down after curing, it’s time to condition. Treat the nails with Bio Cuticle Oil to rehydrate the nail and the surrounding skin. All done! All imagery supplied by TMC

The beauty industry is forever evolving – at times it feels like there’s a new super-ingredient every other month! But Coconut Oil is one of those trends that has a lot of history – and facts – behind it. Read on to find out more about some of our favourite Coconut Oil based products here at Capital. 28
So, what’s so great about Coconut Oil? Over the past couple of years Coconut Oil has become somewhat of a cure-all ingredient. Not only does it come highly recommended as a pre- and post-shampoo treatment, people are using it to clean their teeth and remove their makeup, and that’s just for starters. However, this is a trend that’s actually backed up with science. Coconut Oil is made up of mediumchain fatty acids that possess anti-mocrobial properties that can help treat acne and protect the skin from harmful bacteria. Many dermatologists endorse it as a gentle emollient (moisturiser) that’s perfect to use when your skin is going through a tough time, as it’s great at repairing and restoring it. It also contains Vitamin E and essential amino acids, and helps towards keeping skin protected from any outside baddies. 29

How much is too much? While it’s often used to cleanse the skin, applying Coconut Oil directly to the face isn’t a trick that works for everyone; on the comedogenic scale it’s a 4, meaning it’s highly likely to block pores and cause blackheads, so those with already oily skin should stick to using it only as a makeup remover (it’s amazing!) or cleanser, but never as a moisturiser. That said, it makes a wonderful body oil, hair treatment and is a real treat for the feet!

This issue we’re focusing on just how well 3D-lipo is doing at Laura Fletcher’s Nottingham -based salon.
E
FUTURE’S 3D! Laura Fletcher SALON Simply Hair and Beauty Lounge SALON OWNER
Laura Fletcher LOCATION
Bramcote, Nottingham
CAPITAL: SO, WHAT’S THE RESPONSE TO YOUR 3D-LIPO MACHINE BEEN LIKE? LAURA: The response since taking on 3D-lipo has been amazing, for both the salon and our clients. We are also gaining clients from as far as 58 miles away. The salon’s profits have grown, taking over £7,000 in just under five weeks, with 3D-lipo alone. Our clients are amazed when I explain how 3D-lipo works and the science behind this unique technology.
HOW LONG HAS 3D-LIPO BEEN AT THE SALON?
Five weeks!*
HOW EASY WAS IT TO GO FROM DISCUSSING 3D LIPO, TO HAVING IT UP AND RUNNING IN THE SALON? As a salon owner I always worried about taking on huge investments – worrying if they would work for the salon – but luckily I already knew about 3D-lipo and the outstanding response it had already received. So, when I found out that Capital Hair and Beauty had taken on the 3D-lipo system I was really happy! Plus they had a brilliant offer on and Capital has long been a company I know and trust. The Derby Store Manager, Hannah, has been brilliant from start to finish; she went out of her way to take me down to the Head Office for 3D lipo in Rugby, so that I could attend their seminar day – which was amazing and very insightful.
*At time of interview. Follow Simply Hair and Beauty Lounge on Facebook: simplyhairandbeautylounge or Instagram; @simplynottingham 34
I also met Ruth the Regional Manager and Bobby, the Commercial Manager. Together, they really helped me make my mind up and Hannah still supports me with advice.
MOST REQUESTED TREATMENT WITH 3D-LIPO? Every treatment is tailor-made to suit our clients’ needs; we get a lot of clients who want to help to reduce body fat so we will always discuss what they need first. Cavitation, which is an inch loss treatment, the effects of which can be seen after each treatment, is very popular. We also like to add radiofrequency, as this helps by melting fat and tightening the skin, something that’s often needed after weight loss. We also get a lot of clients that need to reduce their ‘mummy tummy’, and in some cases this can be done in just one cryolipolysis treatment, which entails the freezing of small fatty deposits.
ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING OF ADDING 3D LIPO TO THEIR TREATMENT MENU? My one piece of advice would be: get prepared to be busy! I didn’t think I would be as busy as I am. It’s crazy how many more clients we have seen coming through our door due to taking 3D-lipo on. In fact, I’m so happy, I’m considering taking on a second salon to make it into a clinic that offers this treatment. For more information on bringing 3D-lipo to your salon via our finance options, visit capitalhairandbeauty. co.uk/furniture/financing/3dlipo-finance today or head to your nearest store. Plus you’ll receive a free Hi Fu Machine worth £12,500 when you buy 3D Lipo from Capital.

G L O W While some of your clients are still thinking of heading off for some last minute sun, others are just trying to hang on to that summer holiday tan. Read on to find out how to help them keep that glow for longer…
Prep time
Unsplash.com
A dose of colour seems to make everything better, and the key to making a spray tan last longer, is all in the prep. According to leading tanning expert James Harknett, your clients can do a lot in the days before their appointment.
38
“The secret to streak-free tanning is good prep,” says James. “Believe it or not, most clients think that shaving before a tan is best – but it’s actually the worst thing they can do. Hair removal removes the dead skin cells, which is what the fake tan needs to ‘cling’ to, in order to give a golden tan. Therefore, tell clients to shave a good 24 hours ahead of the tan. If they prefer waxing, they should
leave it even longer, waxing at least 48 hours ahead. Advise them to exfoliate gently a few days leading up to the tanning, and tell them to concentrate on areas such as around the top of the breasts and underarms, strap lines and the waist band. These areas can tan darker due to the build-up of compacted skin.” Unsplash.com
T H A T
HOW TO KEEP IT
So, how to advise your clients to keep that glow after they’ve booked in with you for a spray tan?
VITAMIN C Encourage your client to add a Vitamin C serum to their regime; it’s known for keeping skin smooth and glowing, and keeps age spots at bay. Plus, it’s something they can wear every single day, come rain or shine, underneath their moisturiser. At night, they can use more heavy-duty skincare to keep skin moisturised and flawless.
EXFOLIATE BEFORE Make sure clients exfoliate their skin the night before a spray tan.
BUT DON’T SCRUB AFTER If you know your client is going to be in the sea or by the pool, advise them to avoid scrubbing their skin with their beach towel post-dip; all it will do is rub the colour off and leave them looking patchy.
A SECOND COAT
Faking it Now, more than ever before, there are tons of options for those who still want to glow, all summer long. For some reason a tan can make us feel like a) we’ve actually been on holiday and b) we look healthier. Sienna X has long been a favourite of ours, and lately the brand has added several new products aimed at building a soft glow over time. WE LOVE: Sienna X Olive Tan.
Gradual self-tanners are a great option to keep colour lasting longer in between spray tan appointments, so tell your clients to take it on holiday with them! Follow these rules and your clients will come back glowing.
For the diehard deep-and-dark fans, be sure to check out our selection of self-tanners and tanning solutions from Crazy Angel. A word to the wise; although you should always advise clients to wear SPF, if they’ve invested in a spray tan with you, be sure to tell them to avoid anything oil-based, as it will simply dissolve the fake tan solution. What a waste! Shop our tanning range at capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk/beauty/tanning

Spotlight on Men’s Colour Jim Shaw, owner of Essensuals and Essensualsmen, Billericay, says there’s never been a better time for men to play with colour.
First up, Rino Riccio, Head of Education at Manifesto, London shares his top four men’s looks for right now.
TOP 3 BARBER TRENDS FOR AW?
The Textured Crop
#1 First, it has to be a textured crop fade.
This is a classic short back and sides: messy crop on top with a short fringe. It works with the hair’s natural growth patterns and ideally suits thick hair with natural texture. TO STYLE: Use a matte paste like Osmo Matte Clay Extreme for some subtle texture.
It’s just a touch longer than a buzzcut but has so much more style and looks so good.
CASUAL MID-LENGTH
#3 High and tight haircuts like the
#2 Next, I’d have to say the short, curly look, such as a high and tight fade with curls on top.
military haircut are also popular; it’s all about shaved sides and longer hair on top.
This square layered haircut is a classic because it’s so versatile. It can be worn on or off the face with little effort. It can be styled by rough towel-drying then using your fave texturising product. TO STYLE: Use a little pomade like Uppercut Deluxe’s Matt Pomade for a light, natural finish, or diffuse it with a texture cream.
Rino Riccio
The mullet can best be described as short or medium hair on the top and sides, mixed with long hair in the back and neck. It’s a strong haircut that’s increasing in popularity. TO STYLE: Leave it to dry naturally for a modern, effortless texture.
MAN BOX BOB
This is a mid-shoulder-length haircut that’s slightly messed up. This style can work on those with any natural thickness or texture; the key is creating a cut that complements the clients’ face shape and hair texture, ensuring that the weight and balance is evenly distributed. TO STYLE: Let it dry naturally, using a salt spray like Macadamia Professional’s Texturizing Salt Spray, for a messy, matte effect, or use a styling cream to encourage texture and curl.

One of our customers, Joe Kandakje of Duke’s Barbers in Oxford, recently won Best Barber Shop in the English Hair & Beauty Awards. Here Joe shares his AW19 predictions.
Colour is currently booming in the industry and I think going into AW19 we will see men become even more experimental; opting for bright as purples, reds and greens. I definitely think these bright and bold shades will be particularly popular with younger men, who are a bit more adventurous in comparison to older men. However, for those who don’t want such an ‘out-there’ shade, pastels, greys and icy colours are also super on-trend and are lower maintenance. Bleaching has also been popular with men for quite some time and I think we will continue to see more men going blonde and bright! Within the salon, colour services for men have risen; not only highlights,
All footballers, as well as other sportsmen. lowlights and all-over colour and tints, but also more men are coming into the salon to have toners put on their hair to give it an instant update. We’ve also noticed a lot of older men embracing their grey hair and not wanting to cover it up; instead, they’re visiting the salon to get a grey toner added to keep their hair looking clean and pristine. We have also noticed men starting to think more about conditioning treatments in the salon, particularly those who are concerned about colouring their hair too often. Finally, there’s also been a rise in grooming services; more men are coming in for beard trims, hot shaves and also pedicures, manicures and threading.

Using the Wahl Magic Clip Cordless, create a base line at the front with a #0.5 guard, taking it just below the ear. Using the #1.5 guard, work on an angle with the corner of the blade around the front of the ear up to the temple to remove bulk, keeping the fade soft. Create a soft transition from your #0.5 to your #1.5 by using the corner of the #1 guard to soften the fade further.
Step 2 Run the Wahl Cordless Detailer down the hairline from the temple and into the beard to keep the front heavy and sharp.Moving into the nape, create a curved base with the full width of the #0 closed blade.

Building up length at the front, keep the tension tight as you pull the hair up and slowly clipper with a closed #0 blade along your fingers. Continue this across the top of the head with a travelling guide out to each side.

I started off by using Facebook to post my pictures and work, but in recent times I find myself using Instagram more, as it’s a visual platform and better for showing my work. Social media has become a part of everyone’s day to day lives, so good quality pictures are really important in order for people to see your work.
