SELL THE BENEFITS “As hairdressers, it’s our job to recommend additional services or products for our clients to get the most out of their style. During a consultation, even if it’s just a cutting service, we can still offer an upgrade with a conditioning treatment at the backwash. These vary in price but 8

on average you can boost your service by £15. More importantly, it can also boost the clients’ experience – we all know the time at the backwash is the best part of a service! “Also, all salon members should be recommending treatments during colour services. Olaplex should be offered as an upgrade as it is a great insurance product for the hair, especially when bleached. “Finally, aftercare is vital for a client’s

experience to maintain the luscious results achieved at the salon. This not only elevates your price but also their experience. It makes the client feel more at ease and allows them to truly trust your judgement as a stylist for future appointments. THE LIT TLE THINGS “A great way to boost profits is to look at the services you currently offer and think of some areas where you can upgrade the experience. For example, if you offer brow waxing, you and your teams should try to upgrade that service to a wax, tint, or brow lamination. You can go even further and consider adding a brow glue to your retail offering. “Retail is a great way to boost your services. If you offer nail services, upgrade them by offering nail art, glitter or gold leaf. Make sure you add these in as an extra service as you must cover product costs and the extra time spent on the treatment. This could really boost your turnover.” Katie Godfrey of @kgsalon

“Why not offer VIP upgrades of the services you already provide? At our salon, we don’t just offer a Cut and Design; we offer a Deluxe Cut and Design which includes extras such as an added treatment, take-home haircare and return visit to the salon for a blowdry with one of our Junior team members. Time to step it up The past year has been a rollercoaster, full of ups and downs and highs and lows. Many of our clients have been resorting to home treatments and DIY techniques to keep their brows in check and now with our industry starting to get back on track we’re faced with a lot of corrective work – especially on those brows! The biggest brow trend for Autumn has to be a strong brow. We saw brow lamination become the most requested brow treatment in 2020 and the trend isn’t going anywhere. A professional brow lamination can dramatically change the brow and is a great service for creating bigger, bolder, fuller and more volumised brows.

Brow lamination offers an opportunity to tame unruly and messy brows, as we are able to set and position hair into a neat and uniform shape. It creates strong definition and on-trend bold looks but is also a great treatment for thinning brows, or brows that have been over waxed or plucked or are naturally thinning with age. Brow lamination allows us to position and move hair to fill in gaps and to create that fluffed-up look, giving the illusion of depth and volume – my more mature clients are loving it and now prefer brow lamination to microblading and other more permanent treatments.

“When creating this look it’s essential that the bob is cut bluntly and significantly shorter than the average chin-length bob. Instead, it should hit around the cheekbone area or just under. For finishing off this look I love to use

Emma Stitt, Director of Symmetria Aesthetics and Skin Clinic, recommends a combination of chemical and mechanical exfoliation through treatments and home care products to help clients through their maskne challenges. But she also says there is a wealth of information you can share with your clients to help them on their journey to glowing skin.

“Firstly, we tackle the cause by gathering skin and medical history to educate the patient on prevention. We then advise the use of single use, disposable masks and advise that they limit wearing makeup. We also discuss the effects of glycation on the skin (sugar molecules attach to other molecules and skin appears dry and lacks collagen) by encouraging clients to reduce their intake of sugar and dairy. Finally, it’s super important to focus on hygiene so be sure to advise on clean hands and hair and encourage clients to regularly clean and disinfect their phones!”

E R A S Not since the decadent ‘70s have we seen men so willing to embrace longer length and experiment with a variety of textures and trends. Here’s what’s next for Autumn men’s styling courtesy of

While shorter hair is often easier to manage, the trends really grabbing my attention are lots of longer hair styles – not super long but more length through the sides and less skin fades. The skill is really in tailoring haircuts and making them bespoke to the client.

For this season it’s all about modernising these longer looks and also informing male clients to be aware of that extra TLC their long hair will require in between appointments. Here are my three top modern long hairstyles for right now:

For autumn I am predicting a return to a more groomed finish; with guys having that extra length and shape I think we will see a lot more partings and an overall more polished look with a nod to the Great Gatsby and the roaring ‘20s. A great way for barbershops to boost revenue is to offer advice on the best care, style and finish products for your clients’ chosen look; encourage them to invest more in the entire process and get onboard with a full haircare routine. It’s also time to think about offering additional services; with the recent boom of texture that we saw over the Summer, perming is a great addition for creating softer shapes for men who want to build a style. You can also consider keratin blowdries for guys worried about damage. @jonathanjandrew

#1 Long curls and enhanced natural textures This is about embracing natural texture and waves and curls. Giving your long-haired, curly clients a blunt trim will help accentuate the curls and make them more manageable. To keep curls and natural waves looking their best at home, styling is key and I like to recommend lotions, serums or light pastes to distribute throughout the hair for a more polished look that adds more body. #2 The modern mullet The mullet is a look that’s back on trend for both men and women and we’re seeing many celebrities wear it with a more choppy, textured finish. The mullet is best worn a little bit shorter on top and even

It gives the hair a different texture and allows the client to style their hair in a number of ways – from slicked back with gel or serum or they can use a texturising spray or mattifying product to give the style added texture and body. #3 The bowl cut The 2021 take on the bowl cut is longer and thicker in appearance and it’s great for men who love a more retro-inspired haircut and who like wearing their hair sleek and smooth.
