IN MY A WEEK SHOES

Welcome to a week in the life of Luca Jones of Kitch Hair. Based in Islington, London, Luca owns the pastel-toned gender neutral salon with his fiancé Scott Humphreys. Here Luca shares a very busy week that sees him working in the salon and on set for photoshoots and TV shows.

Monday

It’s my day off so I’ve come to Stockport to see my tattooist of 14 years to fill in some spaces – although I don’t have much left! While I’m here I decide to organise a dinner with friends and my return train back to London for tomorrow morning.

Tuesday

Tuesdays are the start of my working week so I head to Kitch Hair ready for what I’d call the more boring things, like ordering stock, answering emails, and tackling the VAT – because not all aspects of running a salon are thrilling. Once I know the salon is set for the week it takes the pressure off, especially if I know I’m going to be away for session work or I’ve got a full column of clients. After a full day at the salon it’s time for me to get my train to Manchester for a shoot tomorrow.

Wednesday

Today I’m working on a Hello! magazine photoshoot with two of my favourite people, Strictly Come Dancing stars Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez, to promote their Firedance tour. I’ve travelled to the most random location on the outskirts of Manchester but I do love a train journey; it’s not often that you get to sit still for 2 hours with no distractions, so I get a lot of catching up with emails done.

When I arrive the shoot is a bit manic as both Karen and the photographer Nicky Johnson’s trains have been cancelled! So myself and Lottie Brooksbank, the makeup artist, had just 25 minutes to get Karen ready. Luckily we’ve been working with Karen since we joined the

Strictly team nine years ago, so we know her hair and face really well. The rest of the team are all on their A game so we get some amazing shots and still finish on time.

Thursday

Today I’m at the pre-record of The Masked Singer the TV show – obviously I can’t say who I worked on as it’s top secret, ha! We’re making the dancers into a prawn ring or hair mushrooms so the briefs are always fun to create.

Designer Nadine O`Toole gives us the brief and then it’s a bit like being at school, playing with hair – we really get to go

Luca’s Advice

knew a simple bun wasn’t gonna cut it! We went for 40-inch baby pink waves with a flower braid. Makeup artist Andrew Gallimore created the most beautiful glitter eyes to bring the whole look together.

Saturday

After a few afterparty drinks last night, I get to have a nice chilled day at the salon. It makes a change as usually, throughout the winter months my Saturdays are spent styling everyone for Strictly Come Dancing. Working on the show really stretches your mind as you have to take into consideration the movement

“If you are looking to get into session styling you will need to have a good grasp on all hair types and styling, the last thing anyone wants to hear is ‘I can’t do that’. Also try to do as many test shoots as you can in order to build a portfolio and create content to build your brand image.”

over the top by stacking wigs, using spray paint, wire – all sorts. I’ve had some real ‘pinchme’ moments working on this show and met some amazing people, including Michelle Williams, Nicola Roberts and Jessie Metcalf.

Friday

Today is a day of two halves; the first part sees me at the salon with my regular clients, then at 5pm I travel over to the O2 to style and fit a wig for comedian Jayde Adams, who’s performing at the Graham Norton Variety Show alongside other comedians, drag artists and singers. Jayde sent over images of a big flower crown and a metallic green outfit so I

and security of the styles you’re creating. You’ve also got the added pressure of it being live TV – which is thrilling but also there’s that fear of something flying off, so l often sew a lot of my styles and accessories in.

Sunday

It’s a working Sunday but it’s a late start which is always welcome. The first couple of clients are Strictly dancers Nancy Xu YouJie and Nikita Kuzmin, then I’m getting Nicola Adams and her partner Ella Baig ready for a movie premiere the following night. Then there are some more regulars and I finish the day with a mad dash to the train station to get back home.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY

THE CONSULTATION

Planning a wedding look is really down to the individual. You can have every single type of bride; from the super-chilled to the micromanager, but whatever type they are, whether they’ve dreamed of this day since childhood or it’s a last-minute affair, every bride wants to feel amazing on the big day.

Just as you would book a regular salon client in for a consultation when they’re considering a new look, a bridal consultation is just as important, yet quite different.

Here, Sophie Chandler, Rush Artistic Team and Educator breaks down the consultation must-haves.

“Your bride might have been thinking about her wedding day for months, even years – she might have a moodboard or Pinterest ready for you. Or, she might not have a clue! That’s why you need to work backwards with a bridal consultation.

“Ideally you would have six to eight months to ensure you make your bride’s hair dreams come true. Within this time frame you’ll start with the first appointment, which is your opportunity to find out what she’s thinking. Ask your bride to bring any images along that she likes and find out if she’s going to be wearing a veil, or if she’s already bought any hair accessories. Ask to see images of her dress – for instance, if she’s wearing something low-cut, long, loose waves could be beautiful, but if she’s wearing a dress with an intricate neckline, a classic updo might be a better idea.

“The consultation is also a good time to ask questions about your bride’s usual approach to wash day and styling – this way you can advise her in advance if she should wash her hair the night before or the day of the wedding and find out if there are any types of styling products that her scalp or hair really don’t agree with.

“This is also the time when you need to ascertain if she’s planning a new hair colour too. If you’re also her colourist then that’s great, but if not, you’ll need to know what she’s planning and how it might affect her hair’s texture or appearance ahead of the wedding.”

A BESPOKE APPROACH

Wedding expert Shelley Lane agrees, saying the consultation is the point where you really find out what your bride likes and what suits her.

Here she breaks down her favourite current bridal styles.

Bohemian Bride

Shelley says the The Bohemian Bride is a timeless style that works well for brides who are getting married in a less formal setting, such as a country house or beach/outdoor wedding.

She says: “We tend to think of the Bohemian look as a longer style with the hair down in a loose, relaxed wave, but it can also work on shorter hair, as flower crowns and braids can be added. It also looks great with balayage colour, so natural and sun-kissed.

“Another option that works both for a boho and classic bride is a beautiful low chignon – it’s elegant and timeless and can easily be accessorised with flowers or jewellery.”

Old Hollywood Glamour Bride

Think black and white movies and Marilyn Monroe for this one. It’s all about classic styles built to last, so give your bride some beautiful vintage curls or a glamorous updo.

A brilliant place for vintage inspiration is social media, so check out TikTok or Instagram for hashtags such as #vintagehairtutorial and you’ll find everything from 1920s waves to Old Hollywood curls and ‘50s pin-up styles.

Shelley says this glamorous style works well on longer hair and is perfect for accessorising with bejewelled combs, lace, ribbons or hair jewels.

Sleek and elegant Bride

This is a tight, polished look, says Shelley, often known as the ‘princess bride’.

“There are many variations of this style, from a sleek bun, to a low chignon or ponytail. It definitely works better on longer hair, so if you’ve got a bride who’s keen to wear this look and has shorter hair, encourage her to grow her hair long enough to add in extensions before the big day. What’s great about this versatile classic, is that it suits all types of dress and venue, and it works with a veil as well,” says Shelley.

The perfect package deal

Sam Kerr, Fudge Professional Bridal Expert at Jonathan Andrew Hair and recent finalist in the 2023 Wedding Awards says packaging up your services makes real salon sense.

As we have a combined hair and beauty salon (separate businesses but in the same building) we’ve always found offering packages is very beneficial for everyone involved. We’re able to offer our brides a big day schedule that includes styling, hair extensions, colour and cut appointments, as well as all their beauty requirements, such as facials, lashes, waxing and manicures.

All packages and prices are tailored to each bride, and they always include a trial before the big day. I include a tailored time sheet for the big day, so absolutely everything is taken care of, and my bride can see we have everything under control.

Big day hair essentials

For Tracey Ann Smith it’s important to organise her kit in advance and she always keeps her essentials separate.

“I always split my kit into two: my essentials and the things I might need. Within my essentials, it’s everything that brings the hair to life, based on what my client and I discussed during the consultation. Think styling products and tools, additional accessories, hair grips and pins.

“In the other section of my kit, I bring things that might come in handy, such as a needle and thread, extra styling products, tools, different brushes, male products, because you might be called upon to help the groom. It’s all about being prepared.”

Bridal nails

Expert nail tech Metta Francis says that as soon as a bride has confirmed her wedding date, it’s time for both of you to start doing your research. Here she shares her big day planning.

“Nails are often left as an afterthought which unfortunately means I’ve had to turn away many last-minute brides! So it’s important to remind any potential bridal clients to book in for not just their big day nails, but also a trial date way ahead of time.

“Encourage your clients to check out Pinterest and Instagram to begin deciding what kind of look they’re after. I always recommend creating a bridal moodboard which includes nails, makeup, hair and general wedding day aesthetics. Once

they’ve had their consultation, discuss whether you need to implement a course of care treatments.

“For example, if your clients’ nails are short and weak, you might need to recommend fortnightly or threeweekly manicures to help repair, strengthen and grow out their natural nails. It can

extensions, be sure to talk them through the various options.

“Be sure to ask if they’re just after extensions for the big day or do they need them for the honeymoon as well?

Depending on their needs you might recommend full cover soft gel tips – which require less commitment –or more permanent options like acrylic and hard gel.”

Metta’s essentials for Wedding Day:

• A nail file to help smooth away any last minute snags or breaks

• Nail glue or fun plasters in case they break a nail in all the excitement

• A light nail/cuticle oil to keep cuticles and nails picture perfect

take months to get natural nails to a healthy state but the long game is always a winner. By focusing on their natural nail growth, it could mean that they won’t need nail extensions, but if they do want

WHY

OLAPLEX

IS THE HAIR INDUSTRY’S MOST LOVED PRODUCT

Before Olaplex arrived on the market in 2014, the bleaching process came with its drawbacks, but thanks to its cutting-edge innovation, the bond-building product literally changed the industry overnight. Read on to find out why.

An Olaplex for any occasion

The entire range of Olaplex is split into products that either treat, maintain or protect the hair. This is just a handful of what the brand has to offer!

TREAT

For clients that need a boost, try No.0, Intensive Bond Building Treatment , a perfect primer that protects and strengthens in 10 minutes. Followed with cult favourite No.3 Hair Perfector, it reduces breakage and leaves hair looking improved. For when a serious dose of hydration is needed, try No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask – it basically brings hair back to life, leaving it smoother and glowing with shine.

MAINTAIN

The key to healthy looking and feeling hair is maintaining it in between professional visits, and nothing works better than the Olaplex range of shampoos; No.4 Bond Maintenance repairs and protects hair from everyday stresses; No.4CB Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo thoroughly cleanses the hair and removes build-up while leaving it hydrated and No.4P

Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo cleanses and tones at the same time, neutralising brassy tones and restoring brightness.

The perfect conditioner for all three of the Olaplex shampoos is of course No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner ; it protects and repairs damaged hair and reduces frizz by relinking broken bonds.

PROTECT

When hair looks this good and is protected from the inside out, of course it’s likely your clients are going to want to play with styling, heat included. And Olaplex has you covered there too!

No.6 Bond Smoother is a wonderful, smoothing creamy product that helps with hydration and reduces frizz, while No.7 Bonding Oil is perfect for increasing shine, softness and colour vibrancy. Finally, don’t forget there’s No.9 Bond Protector ; this weightless serum provides heat protection and reduces tangles and static. What more could you want?

Iconic technology

But don’t just take it from us. Salon owner Maria of Maria Grazia in Bedford says it’s an industry icon for a reason.

“I remember when I first heard of Olaplex; it seemed like it came out of nowhere and completely stormed the market. Every salon up and down the country and across the globe couldn’t get enough of it!

“Unlike anything else, what sets Olaplex apart is its ground-breaking technology, particularly when it’s in professional hands. It was designed for colour technicians to give their colour processes the ‘edge’ while pushing boundaries and protecting the hair. Olaplex became essential to any colour process as it allowed us to colour the hair but keep it healthy and prevent breakage. It took colour correction and colour transformations to a whole new dimension.

“For me Olaplex is what I like to call ‘insurance for the hair’ creating new bonds and making the hair stronger and more resilient than ever before.”

Make sure you’re all stocked up on your Olaplex faves over at capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk/brands/ olaplex and capitalhairandbeauty.ie/ brands/olaplex

If you thought Olaplex was amazing on hair, wait ‘til you see what LashBond Serum will do for your clients’ lashes. Head to page 33 for more information on this exciting new addition!

SUMMER PREP

Summer’s all about smooth, glowing skin and stress-free vibes. Here we share some top tips for waxing, tanning and lash trends.

FRIZZ-FREE

First stop, super smooth skin with Lisa Stone, Salon System Educator and waxing specialist.

When Summer arrives, we’ll notice our clients are coming out of hibernation and want to show more skin, so of course, their first stop is a waxing appointment. With these more seasonal clients, you’ll notice that the hairs haven’t been treated for many months, so before you get started, ensure you trim down any long hair to around ¼ inch. Leaving hair long can cause problems when waxing from skin trauma and bruising to unnecessary pain.

Us Brits love the sunshine but please remind your clients that UV rays and waxing do not mix! Be sure to tell your waxing clients to avoid any exposure to direct sunlight after their service for 24hrs and advise that they wear loose clothing to cover waxed areas plus a hat if they’ve had any facial waxing. Also, do let your customers know that it’s also best to avoid

exposing areas of skin that are due to be waxed to the sun as sunburnt skin cannot be waxed.

Bare in mind that during the warmer months, your salon space might become very warm which could cause some waxes to change in consistency, making them harder to use. Make sure you’re choosing a high-quality wax that has a fast-drying time and allows you to work quickly. I like to use the Salon System Just Wax collection because it includes many high-performance waxes that enable us to work in all conditions with excellent results.

One of the big issues in the summer is letting the underarm hair grow to a length that’s suitable for waxing, so many will just shave! But there’s no need to worry about that now - by changing your wax and techniques, you can remove shorter hairs and reduce the amount of time you should leave for hair growth, keeping your clients happy and more regular visits to your salon.

Ensure you’re giving your clients the correct after care advice – encourage them to try and stay cool, avoid anything that will make them hot and sweaty after the waxing service, wear light loose clothing - nothing that is tight and restricting – and avoid all vigorous exercise.

Summer screams fake tan! But avoid waxing after it’s been applied, as waxing will remove the top layer of dead skin cells where the fake tan sits, so skin could end up patchy. Also, advise your clients that it’s best they don’t apply fake tan for 24hrs after waxing.

We like: Salon System Just Wax Expert Cleanse & Prime Serum is perfect for using on waxing clients when their skin is perspiring or feeling clammy in hot weather. Use it before you get started to keep skin cool and calm.

Pro tip: Exfoliate!

Lisa Stone says exfoliating is key for waxing and tanning:

“To help with dry skin and ingrown hairs, encourage your clients to exfoliate a few days prior to the waxing services. They should also exfoliate after the waxing –leaving a few days to let the skin settle – and it’s also ideal for prepping skin pre tanning appointment.”

TANNED AND GLOWING

Nothing gets rid of dull-looking skin faster than a tan. But the key to expert application is ensuring skin is ready for the tanning solution. When skin is super dry or even flaky, all that happens is the solution gets stubbornly stuck on those areas. Instead, skin should be exfoliated and moisturised before application – think of it as the perfect blank canvas for a radiant tan.

We like: Way to Beauty The Ultimate Tanning Collection in Medium or Dark. Both kits contain Tanning Mousse, Airbrush Tanning Mist, a luxurious Daily Glow Lotion plus tanning mitt, body brush, headband and more!

LASH-LOVIN’ SUMMER

Lashes have become part of your clients’ daily wardrobe and for Summer that means they’ll be looking for lash options that can take them from the beach to the dance floor and back again. Here Ruth Aktins, Lash Expert and Salon System Educator shares her forecast for the season.

As with all beauty looks, clients are continuously looking for the next big thing. Right now, that means we’re moving away from the very heavy ‘over-done’ look and clients are looking for more natural options that make the most of the natural lash. Think lash lift treatments – they’re always going to be a winner – as well as applying half lashes, creative individual lashes, or hybrids rather than super full lashes.

Strip and individual lashes with ultra-thin bands worn under the lash will become the norm, as there are no tell-tale signs of glue. I’m also seeing more half sets being worn as they’re easier to apply by simply

cutting the strip lash to size and blending the natural lashes in with mascara. I think this is also where we will see coloured mascaras making a comeback!

Salon semi-permanent lashes are still going to be all about the feathery, fluffy hybrids. I like to recommend Salon System Marvelash lengths in 3,4,5,6,7,8,9D ready-made or hand-made fans and YY lashes – offering plenty of fullness with less weight and quicker salon treatment times. I believe in-salon

lashes have come full circle and for 2023, adding a hint of a tint with coloured lashes could suit a niche clientele.

We like: Salon System Dual Treatment Lash & Brow Lift System , an easy 3-step system that lifts lashes for 8 weeks and laminates brows for 3-4 weeks. With an improved Lift Lotion, a new Boost Lotion, plus a new cream formulation and recyclable packaging, you’ll achieve great workable speeds for each step and a nice creamy consistency for fabulous results.

EASY, BREEZY COLOUR CARE

A new season means new looks, new colour –here’s how to help your clients keep their colour fresh all Summer long…

Take care

It’s all guns blazing when it comes to giving your client the holiday colours they crave, but a key tip to it staying that way is for them to take a little extra care.

Darrel Starkey of Hair by Darrel says:

“The sun and humidity can play havoc with the condition of coloured hair so, first of all, I’d advise my clients to give their heated styling tools a miss. Instead, I’d recommend they experiment with boho waves – a great holiday look that’s easy to achieve.

“Tell them to tie hair up into a topknot after washing it and leave to dry naturally. Once dry, they should undo the top-knot and loosen up the curls with their fingers and then add a spritz shine spray for a glossy finish.”

For clients who are already dealing with dry, dull colour, it’s all about focusing on restoring hydration and health. For Darryl that means plenty of hair conditioning oil, plus it can also help create a key look of the moment; wet look hair.

Darryl says: “We’ve seen the wet-look all over catwalks and it’s an ideal holiday hairstyle, especially for clients who love the beach. All they need to do is spritz the hair with an oil spray or slick it back with a hair serum and comb it through for a glamorous day to night time style.

“Oils and serums can also be used prior to blow-drying the hair to seal split ends, condition and protect the hair. I’d also advise my clients to start using hair masks at least twice a week during the summer months, especially before they go away – this way hair gets the nourishment it needs to keep colour sealed in.”

On the go protection

For Marcello Moccia of Room 97 Creative in Wakefield, holidays are the best time for clients to take a proactive approach to haircare, rather than coming back to you with some dull and dismal strands!

“As soon as my client brings up their holiday plans, I use it as an opportunity to educate them on the right haircare regime. I will always recommend products that they can take with them. Of course,

they don’t need to take everything, but if they’ve spent their hard-earned money on their hair colour, they will want it to be protected!

“Key products I’d advise them them to take would be a clarifying shampoo - like Olaplex 4c Clarifying Shampoo - and conditioner, a leave-in treatment and a hair product that is a real multi-tasker, such as L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Curl Expression 10-in-1 Mousse. It provides definition and hydration –perfect for holiday styling.”

Before and after

Once you know when your client’s off on their hols, plan in a before and after appointment with them. The before chat can be focused on products and habits that help with locking in colour and keeping hair healthy, while the after appointment can assess if their hair condition has changed and you can give them some nourishing treatments based on their needs. For Safy Burton, it’s all about keeping the colour as vibrant as possible.

“At our salon, a lot of clients love vibrant

and bold colours so we are always advising them on what to do to keep things that way. I always advise clients where possible to wash hair once or twice a week maximum, as this is enough to maintain a colour while also injecting much-needed hydration and nutrients back into the hair. I would also encourage them to come into the salon every few weeks in between appointments for a toner to help lock in the colour.”

Kirsty Judge of the Rush Colour Team says she always recommends clients to come into the salon for a deep conditioning and colour glossing service once they’ve returned from their time away.

“Deep conditioning is great for bringing the hair back to life and by adding a glossing service we’re able to increase shine and lock in the colour, keeping it vibrant for an extra few weeks before they come back in for a full head colour service,” says Kirsty.

If heat is a must…

While most hairdressers will advise clients to steer clear of heated tools in the

warmer months, of course, there’s going to be the odd night when they really want to add some waves or go super straight.

Leo McCallum of ROAR Hair and Beauty says advising your clients on a good heat protectant is vital.

“Heat protection helps to reduce damage from UVA/B rays – it’s like using SPF on the face – which is something that everyone should be doing and the same goes for the hair.

“Another issue I see coming up often is when clients are tempted to let their hair dry naturally in the sun – but it isn’t always the best option. When hair is wet it’s in its most vulnerable state, so when someone jumps into bed with damp hair, the pillow creates friction and can lead to damage and/or breakage. For clients who want to let their hair airdry I recommend braiding the hair into a plait and allowing it to dry that way. Plus they’ll get some gorgeous heatless waves at the same time.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE WITH Y2K

Back in the late ‘90s the arrival of the year 2000, also known as Y2K, was a moment that the world truly got excited about. From wondering whether all the computers would suddenly crash to imagining ourselves wearing metallic silver from head to toe, it’s an era that truly made its mark on how we dressed, and it’s back for 2023!

Y2K hair moments

For some reason, silver was the go-to colour of the Y2K era, and when that comes to 2023 hair, it’s all about metallics.

Safy B says metallic hair can be given a bespoke finish depending on the client.

“With my own clients, we’re seeing a real mix; on one hand there’s the client who loves a bold look, featuring a strong vivid colour, teamed with a metallic finish. Or, there’s the client who wants to dabble in the trend but prefers something much more subtle using pastel tones.”

One thing’s for sure, ever since the emergence of social media, hair trends move so much faster and in some ways, that prompts even more innovation when it comes to colour techniques and finishes. For Rush Artistic Team member Seung ki Baek, it’s all about looking forward for inspiration.

“Social media has drawn us into this digital world, and we’ve seen it affecting hair trends since 2022, when we began to see our younger clients opting for the halo technique; colour was placed in a halo segment, meaning that whenever light hit it, a metallic finish would be reflected – it’s very cool and completely different to the usual salon colours and techniques.

“For 2023 we will such much more emphasis on playing with colour when adding a metallic finish. It works really well on darker hair, as you can use shades such as fuchsia pink, galactic blue and emerald green – be sure to place them where the light hits for a really vibrant take on the trend,” advises Seung.

Pretty pastel metallics

Suzie McGill of Rainbow Room International says she couldn’t be more thrilled to blend metallic hues with mega shine for her trend-conscious clients.

“Metallic tones are perfect for adding shine to the hair, particularly shades of pink and lavender, which look so beautiful on blondes, giving them a unique and opulent finish.

“When it comes to darker tones, metallic lavender and purple look incredible and give real shine and lustre. But whether your client is blonde or brunette, it’s really important to discuss after care when they’re considering metallic tones. These shades can fade out quicker than more vibrant, bold shades, therefore clients should be advised to use coloursaving shampoos and conditioners and hair masks, as well as heat protection to prevent colour fade and to keep colour sealed in and looking fresh,” advises Suzie.

Zesty metals

It’s not all silvers and lilacs when it comes to Y2K though; for Andrew Smith, it’s about warmer tones that carry all the way through Summer.

“I’ve noticed shades of metallic muted orange/coral and rose gold becoming popular with clients and they are particularly beautiful for the warmer months. I love incorporating these tones on to an ashy or silver base to give the look further edge. Teaming this colour trend with a short, choppy crop or pixie cut looks stunning and is a more contemporary way to wear the look, taking it from the 2000’s to 2023.”

Don’t forget Y2K nails!

The Y2K trend is set to stick around all year, and as well as seeing it on your clients’ heads, some of them will likely also add a metallic tone to their eyebrows and of course, a brilliant way to play with the trend is via their nails.

Award-winning nail tech Metta Francis says music videos of the 2000s are a great place to look for inspiration.

“Back in the 2000s we saw some of the most creative hip hop videos - think sound tunnels, metallic blues and silvers and foil-like jumpsuits, like rnb singer Missy Elliott.

“You can get super creative with when it comes to Y2K nails and I’m already seeing lots of 3D metallic bubbles, iridescent metallic raindrops - think blues, purples and silvers - and textures appearing all over TikTok. It’s the perfect time to experiment with metallic foils, chrome

powders and highly pigmented metallic art gels. For a more wearable version of the trend, chrome powder is ideal as it can be given a more frosted finish as opposed to a mirror-like shine. Personally I love the contrast of bold metallics against a more natural base coat to really make the metallic pop.”

THE FUTURE OF GLITTERBELS AND BEYOND

Meet Glitterbels, a unique brand of acrylics, gels and cutting-edge accessories on a mission to revolutionise the world of nails. Built on innovation, Glitterbels creates trend-led colours inspired by the catwalk, nature, streetstyle and believes that colour can inspire everyone.

LAUNCHING IN JULY

Something different

When we launched we decided we wanted to remove Hema, the number one allergen in nail and cosmetic products, from our offering. Many brands rely on Hema (also known as hydroxyethyl methacrylate) for their gel polish products as it gives a hard, shiny finish but as it’s a common allergen we wanted to remove any possibility of affecting your clients’ health.

Why we removed Hema from Glitterbels Builder Gel

People are becoming more healthconscious and aware of what they are using on their skin and body and the consumer is much more knowledgeable on what various ingredients do. By removing Hema we can offer a top quality product that’s also vegan, cruelty and allergen free.

Our Hema Free Builder Gel is a nail polish that helps to strengthen nails enabling them to grow in length and thickness and become more durable. Applied to natural nails or extension tips they can last an average of two to three weeks.

Why you should try Glitterbels

Hema Free Builder Gel today:

• Hema free

• Vegan

• Cruelty-free

• Compatible with soak-off gels and hard gels

• Soaks-off

• Improved nail strength and flexibility

• Can be used to extend the nail with a form or plastic tip

Hema Free Builder Gel is the perfect option for anyone wanting to grow their natural nails as it helps to strengthen and protect them, meaning more growth.

As with any professional nail treatment, the appropriate method of removal should be followed to ensure there is no damage to the natural nail. Also, as nail growth varies from client to client be sure to monitor your clients to ensure they come in for infills – usually around 3 to 4 weeks.

• Can create a beautiful curve to a flat nail

• Easy application; brush bottle application saves time

• The clear is crystal clear and does not yellow

• Files off easily

• Fixes damaged nails

Whether it’s elegant neutrals, modern metallics or gleaming glitters, Glitterbels has a shade for everyone.

TIME TO PLAY!

Lippy

The lipgloss trend is one that’s perfect for anyone who’s never been a fan of colour and length. Instead it’s all about short, clean nails that are enhanced with pretty shades of pink or nude, sealed in with the most glossy topcoat you can find.

Metta Francis is already a big fan. She says: “lipgloss nails are such an easy trend that anyone can wear, regardless of nail shape or length. It gives this gorgeous, healthy glow and can be sheer or more opaque and it can easily be achieved with both nail polish and a glossy, gel-like top coat or with gel polish.”

Milky

Other more natural options are the Vanilla French and American manicure styles, which Metta says are like a step up from the lipgloss trend.

She explains: “with the lipgloss trend, the tips are not painted white; it’s a one colour, super high shine glossy look, but the Vanilla look sees the nail tips being painted a milky shade, while the American Manicure sees the entire nail, including the freshly painted tip, painted with a very natural shade that matches the nail bed.

“It really is the ‘no make-up, make-up’ look for nails and it’s so subtle,” says Metta.

Candy apple red

Red has been having a major moment in the world of celebs –from Doja Cat wearing all red for Paris Fashion Week to Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance wearing

the shade head to toe, it’s being seen as the power shade to wear right now, and for nails it’s all about that super glossy finish. Think toffee apple shine and you’re there!

Male moment

Since 2021 the trend for male manicures focused on general care and a simple shine have been on the rise and thanks to the likes of Harry Styles and Rihanna’s partner rapper Asap Rocky, more intricate nail art has become another way for men to express their individuality. For Metta, it all starts with care.

“Generally, I find my male clients often deal with stubborn cuticles as well as cuts and soreness over their fingers. I like to start with a good cuticle remover to soften the skin prior to prep work as it makes it easier to push back and remove dead skin from the nail plate.

“For the finishing touch, I like to give nails a gentle, light buff for a natural, groomed look or apply a matte strengthener –it’s perfect for protecting the nails. For a more shiny finish, I’ll use a glossing block – used to buff in cuticle oil – or a high shine nail polish style treatment works well. For aftercare, an active hand cream and cuticle oil pens are great for maintaining nails at home. It’s minimal effort but really helps to keep the hands moisturised and reduce cuticle build-up between appointments.”

THE POWER OF BUILDER GEL

Sometimes a new innovation hits the market and it becomes an instant hit. Builder Gel is exactly that; it’s the perfect multi-tasking tool.

First, nail builder gel works by strengthening and repairing the natural nails. It does this by filling in any cracks or breaks in the nail surface, ensuring that they look smoother, more even and healthy. While it’s giving the appearance of healthier nails, it’s also encouraging new nail cells to grow, meaning they look longer and thicker and become more durable.

Second, Builder Gel is a tool that you can use with tips or forms to create nail extensions.

How it works:

Builder Gel is applied in two layers; the builder gel and then a topcoat. The Builder Gel helps to strengthen and harden the polish while the topcoat adds an attractive gloss and helps to reduce chipping.

Why your clients might love it:

• Perfect for clients who want flexibility and need something more hardy than acrylics.

• Ideal for clients who struggle to maintain nail length.

THE PERFECT MANI PREP

Here Metta Francis shares her tips for the ultimate prep for the perfect manicure.

Using the best tools is really important to help ensure you can work effectively and efficiently. Start by assessing your client’s nails and remember that one approach does not suit all.

Expert

and owner of Sketched by J-A Nails

shares her favourite fruity gel polish trend for this season.

I think the alternative French manicures are still going to be popular as well as fruit inspired nails! For the perfect French make sure you use a fine liner rather than the brush from your gel polish bottle to create the tips. An angled brush is also always handy to neaten the smile line. When it comes to fruit nails I always like mixing part of the main colour with white when applying, it will give it depth rather than just one flat colour.

• Preferable for clients who want to reduce potential nail damage during the removal process, as opposed to acrylic removal for example.

• Great for anyone who wants a natural-looking nail.

For Metta Francis, Builder Gel is a brilliant addition to her kit.

“Builder Gel can be used as an overlay to protect natural nails or to extend nails for extra length. You can easily sculpt and encapsulate with builder gel and a few styles I love to create using it include transparent tips, encapsulated florals, foils and milk bath style nails.”

Be sure to check out our full range of Builder Gels, from GELLUX, to TMC to Glitterbels – we’ve got something for everyone.

If you thought we’d forgotten about your bridal clients – we’ve got you covered! Head to page 9 for our 3-page bridal special that includes the perfect bridal nail consultation.

Start with your cuticle pusher of choice to gently push back the proximal nail fold – I prefer a rounded cuticle tool to start as this usually follows the natural shape of the cuticle area. This will dislodge any dead skin attached to the nail plate and uncover anything that needs removing.

Then go in with a flat cuticle tool to clean up the sidewalls. A curette is perfect for scooping away any residue from the side walls and corners. You can then assess and see what needs to be nipped way e.g.hang nails or any excess dead skin. Avoid unnecessarily over nipping and check in with your client regularly to ensure they are comfortable. Once you have finished, use the rounded pusher again to tidy up and cleanse the nail plate thoroughly. Now you’re ready for the perfect polish application.

HAIRCARE

IS THE NEW SKINCARE

DISCOVER NEW OSiS STYLING WITH CHARACTER

Judging by social media, the pandemic was a time that the entire world became obsessed with its skincare routine and the main focus was of course: hydration. As consumers have become more ingredientsavvy and cost-conscious, that skincare focus has now moved onto their hair. In fact, spending on haircare is set to go back to pre-pandemic heights according to market analyst Globaldata.

Skinification in haircare

With consumers knowing their Vitamin C from their AHAs, they’re much more keen to see the benefits of these powerful ingredients improving the look and feel of their hair – not just their skin.

skin health. After all, our skin does not stop at the hair line! So if a client spends time exfoliating the skin on their face, it’s only logical that they would want to consider products that exfoliate the scalp. Exfoliating not only removes build-up, it also stimulates growth,” says Mark. He also adds that skinification is the biggest untapped market in the hair industry and that now is the time for salons to capitalise on the trend.

For Kelly Shone-Adams, owner of Technocracy

Hair Salon in Port Talbot, that means adding scalp facials to her client service menu.

use products, and also cover it up with hats and caps throughout the year. It’s not surprising that a scalp facial could be the key to cell turnover, improved circulation and hair growth!” says Kelly.

SO, WHEN IS A GOOD TIME FOR A HAIRDRESSER TO SUGGEST A SCALP FACIAL?

For Kelly it all starts with the consultation.

“Now guests understand the benefits of skincare ingredients, we are seeing what’s been called the ‘skinification’ of hair. Thanks to the skincare industry highlighting key ingredients such as hydrating Hyaluronic Acid and exfoliating Salicylic Acid, for example, it makes them more understandable to the consumer and over time they have become recognised as ‘trustworthy’.”

Scalpcare is selfcare

Mark Blake, a globallyrecognised trichologist for NIOXIN, a salon brand focused on thicker, fuller hair, says skinification has helped clients to understand their scalp’s needs.

“Skinification has meant that we’re really starting to view scalp health as

“A scalp facial is a specific treatment performed on the scalp to remove buildup of products, sebum, and environmental pollution. It’s a great backwash treatment to ensure hair is in optimum health and I like to use the OSMO Scalp Therapy range. It’s a 3-part treatment that consists of a purifying scalp scrub with sea salt to soothe, cleanse and exfoliate; a detangling gel packed with sea minerals, to balance, strengthen and hydrate and the final step is a replenishing mask with Prickly Pear Oil that’s full of antioxidants to moisturise and repair even the most damaged hair.

“We cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturise our faces regularly so the same should apply to our scalps. We store a lot of tension and stress in the muscles of our scalp and head, plus we sweat,

“That’s when we address the importance of scalp health. When we first started offering scalp facials, we offered a reduced rate intense backwash treatment when clients were served by our younger team members. This encouraged wider interest so we decided to promote it throughout the salon. The scent of the OSMO Scalp Therapy range is gorgeous, so it’s only helped to make scalp facials a natural talking point amongst our clients!”

EXPRESSION!

Individuality is key for Summer, as tried and tested favourites are given a modern makeover.

Wet look

It started on the catwalk, then the celebs wore it and it seems the wet look is here to stay. The great thing about this look is how versatile it can be, as you can make it look sophisticated, edgy or punky. The key is to use products that allow the hair to look fully saturated with optimum shine. I love to use the L’Oréal tecni. art Extreme Splash which gives hair an instant wet-look with visible shine and hold. Tina Farey, Editorial Director at Rush

Fringes as a whole will be big for Summer, with the micro fringe more popular than ever. Adding in a slightly longer length and lots of texture, a fringe is the perfect addition to any style.

Texture

In Summer, natural texture and curls will be huge as we see more clients embrace their curls and texture. With volume enhancing products aplenty, those with finer hair need not worry – they can also embrace this trend thanks to the return of the perm! Think bigger and bolder than ever.

Bangs and fringes

Bangs are back and bolder than ever for Summer. Think solid, structured lines and statement fringes. Disconnected from the overall look, these statement fringes are here to stick around.

‘70s vibes

We’re taking it back to the ‘70s, with inspiration coming from the likes of Farrah Fawcett and her gorgeous faceframing, flicked-out layers. However, the style has evolved; we’ve added a fringe and we’re seeing more volume and texture while the flicked-out sections have become softer.

Cubs, shags and mullets

The cub cut is very similar to the recent wolf cut trend, which of course was very similar to the shag. But this version is a lot shorter – around chin length – to mimic the look of a bob. It’s a great look for clients who want a cut with lots of soft layers at various

lengths, and for anyone who wants to add texture, movement and body.

The key with these cuts is that they have a lot of texture at the top and are left longer towards the end for that quirky, ‘cool girl’ finish. I also love to team these cuts with a fringe for a contemporary finish.

The boyfriend bob is one of my favourites this year. The cut is similar to a traditional bob, but it has a more contemporary feel, as it’s cut more bluntly and almost ‘square’. This is such a chic and stylish cut; perfect for those looking for something on-trend that’s cool and sophisticated.

The ‘Shag’ wins for Summer 2023, and that’s down to its versatility and wearability. We love its soft feathery texture that can be personalised for each guest.

C is for Customer

It goes without saying: no customers = no business and no business means no profits! This is why it’s imperative you spend time getting to know your customer and their needs. Now that business is approaching pre-pandemic levels, customers expect a lot more for their money, so be sure to invest time and resources into data collection, or what we prefer to call, fact-finding. Think questionnaires people can fill out on an iPad while you work and always ask for reviews.

Whether it’s an anonymous section on your website or Google reviews, they make all the difference for your future clientele and future income. Or feel free to reach out to your client post-visit. Once you’ve asked if it’s a convenient time for them to talk, tell them you’d like to ask them a few questions about their last experience with you. Did they feel listened to? Did they get the results they initially expected? Would they recommend you? Yes, feedback can sometimes be hard to swallow but it will make your business stronger for the future.

K is for Know your Market

For Lisa Stone, Salon System Educator and beauty expert, this is a vital step for a successful business.

A is for Accountant

When you’re a freelancer it’s natural to feel you can do everything. In fact, it’s only natural to think you should do everything. Doing everything yourself absolutely keeps costs down, but it also means you are often stretched way too far to keep track. Before you know it, you’re making mistakes in everything from your Instagram caption to your colour application! Searching online for a local accountant will free up time for all the day to day essentials, plus there are online accounting options from the likes of Sage, Xero or The Accountancy, starting from around £20 per month.

Or, if you prefer an app to help you manage daily sales, receipts, invoices etc, try Quickbooks. Then when it’s time for a Self Assessment or a VAT return you can simply hire an accountant and share your Quickbooks data with them. That way you’re only paying them when you need them.

“Not understanding your market is one of the most common mistakes made; be wary of pricing yourself too cheaply: you can cheapen your brand and expertise or show lack of experience. On the flip side though; price yourself too high and you might get high end clients coming to you who feel they aren’t getting value for money!”

L is for Loyalty

When it comes to increasing your costs, and hopefully your profits, loyalty is a key factor says Jaz Moger, Salon System Nail Expert.

“Loyal clients who have been visiting you for years will have seen your growth more than anyone else

and will more than likely be happy to pay your new price. The reason they come to you in the first place is because they like you and what you do. If your new pricing no longer fits with their personal budgeting, then they might move to a cheaper artist, but you will always fill the gap with a new client who only knows you at the new prices.

As much as we are lucky to do a job we love, it is a job, and it pays our bills so always make sure you are charging your worth. If you’re making under minimum wage and working at full capacity, then it’s time to change.”

P is for Pricing

Pricing isn’t always about what you bring or where you’re located – you need to take your costs into account too, says Salon System Nail Expert Julie-Anne Larivière.

“When you sit down to work out your prices, it should reflect several important factors, such as rent, utility bills, insurances, products cost, etc. but also, don’t forget to add in holidays or training costs.

“Once you have worked out your outgoings, you need to add in the amount of money per year you would need at

the very least to pay your own personal outgoings and also – have a life! Divide that amount over 12 months, then divide it by how many clients you see monthly. This will give you an exact amount of the very least you can charge for a service. This is how you will know whether you are pricing yourself correctly or not. Remember, know your worth and be confident when setting your prices for your treatments.”

S is for Social Media

Okay so it’s not exactly a financial tip but there’s no denying that having a social media presence absolutely impacts your bottom line. Having a social media account, Instagram, TikTok or even Facebook (slightly older demographic as younger generations move towards TikTok), gives you a window into a world of new customers and in turn they get to see your creativity.

Plus many social platforms now enable you to take online bookings, even if you don’t have your own website – but you really should! Booking in with you can literally be a few clicks away once a potential client finds you on Instagram, so be sure all your services and prices are up to date.

For my blonde clients, I always ensure they’re taking my fave product, the OSMO Super Silver No Yellow Shampoo I advise them to use it maybe once a week rather than an everyday product – it helps knock the unwanted yellow from blondes.

Christina Fay Rudall, who runs a freelance home salon says Summer is all about deep cleansing shampoos.

“A clarifying shampoo is a must, especially for clients who love to be in and out of the sea or like to swim in the hotel pool as it reduces any pollution as well as product build-up.
