BRAND NEW TRAINING AT CAPITAL: HENNA BROWS BLENDED COURSE
Brow tinting has become big business over the past couple of years; brows shape the face, and so many of your clients have likely been playing with both the shape and colour of their brows. With our new Henna Brows Blended Course, you’ll be able to offer them even more options. What’s more, it’s super quick and highly profitable.
What you’ll learn:
SALON RECYCLING FOR EVERYONE
Finally, a recycling solution that suits any salon and any freelancer! Aluminium is used in over 200,000 tons of packaging each year, and much of that inevitably comes from the hair industry in the form of everything from aerosol sprays to trays and bottle tops.
Recyclemysalon.co.uk is an initiative backed by the HBSA, supporters of professional hair and beauty suppliers. The HBSA believes that as a collective, the hair and beauty industry can do its part when it comes to protecting the planet and reducing waste, and this not-forprofit recycling initiative is open to anyone, free of charge.
Help the industry play its part in dealing with climate change and visit any one of the recycling points at our Crawley, Southampton, Bournemouth, Croydon, Hove and Brighton stores.
All are free to use for any customers who need somewhere to recycle used colour tubes and foils that are packaged in aluminium products. We hope to roll this out even further so stay tuned!
Dramatic brows are a major trend for the year ahead, and Henna is a brilliant way to replicate the look of thicker, fuller brows, without the use of chemicals to develop the colour. In this course you will learn about the history of Henna, how it compares to other brow tints and how to mix and apply.
As this is a blended course, you’ll complete three hours online learning in the comfort of your home, before attending an in-store training session for four hours. During your in-store training, you’ll learn more about shaping the brows, from measuring and marking to hair removal with wax as well as aftercare.
What’s more, if you need to refer back to the course materials after you’ve completed your training, the online learning portal will be available to you for one year.
What you’ll need:
You’ll need to purchase the ProSpa Henna Brows Starter Kit before you start the course, so be sure to contact your local store in advance – and don’t forget to patch test! On the day of the in-store practical you’ll need a model and they will also need to have completed a patch test at least 24 hours in advance. Please bring a fully charged iPad, tablet or laptop so you can access your E-certificate on the day.
Suitable for: Beginners and anyone wishing to update their skills. You must be 18+.
Cost: £145+VAT

The keyword that springs to mind reading about Rianna Henry’s week is ‘multi-tasking’! Rianna is a freelance hairstylist, bridal specialist, ghd educator and mum to a one year old. Take a look at her busy week…
Monday
Mondays have always been my day off, ever since I was in a salon, but I wake up at 4am every morning no matter what day – even before I became a mum. While my baby is sleeping, I shower and then respond to emails I’ve missed over the weekend and confirm any online appointments that have come through.
After my son has his breakfast, I drive him to swimming, then it’s back home for lunch. As swimming really tires him out, I use this time to film any requested brand content before dinner and bath time.
hours! But I always seem to arrive 30 minutes early, so I grab an iced latte.
A WEEK SHOES
Tuesday
IN MY
Baby comes along for the ride for my morning clients. I wake up at 4am, do my workout and by 6am we’re on the way to Primrose Hill for my first client.
When I arrive I put baby on the sofa with his toys while I blowdry my client’s hair. Once I’m finished I change him and grab a quick breakfast before the next client.
After my second client we head to our local Everyman Cinema for Baby Club – it’s a babyfriendly movie screening where anyone can bring their baby and no-one cares if your baby cries or if you’re feeding. While we walk I call the salons that I’m teaching at the next day to confirm time slots, what they want to learn and where I can park.
Wednesday
Most Wednesdays I’m a freelance educator for ghd so I drive out of London to teach 2-hour sessions at three salons. I load up the car and drop baby off at childcare for 7am before starting my commute. Every commute is different; some are an hour’s drive, others two
I arrive at the first salon and talk with the salon manager about what I plan to do. I like to do demos on a block and then let the stylists go off and do it on their models, so I spend the first 30 minutes talking about products and showing techniques. The remaining time sees me walking around to see how the stylists are doing; I take lots of pictures for the salons to use as social content too. Once I’ve had lunch I head to the next two salons and then get back on the motorway to drive home.
Rianna’s Advice
pastry and then I set up my kit. If it’s a shoot with ghd, I don’t need any kit as it’s usually couriered across to the studio. If it’s a campaign or e-com I’ll have a chat with the creative director to discuss the looks we’re creating before we get started.
I love being on set; it brings me so much joy to meet new people and work with some amazing brands.
Saturday
It’s bridal season which means my Saturdays are full of brides! I usually leave by 6am to drive to Kent or Surrey to arrive for my bride by 7:30am.
“Be a nice person; I’ve learnt over the years that brands choose me over someone else not just because of my skills but because they like me. I mingle with everyone on set – camera man, video guys, runners – everyone. ”
Thursday
Baby’s at childcare today so I drive to Primrose hill for a 7am appointment; it’s a blowdry and when I finish I grab a green smoothie and head to my next client. I usually visit around five or six clients per day, from blowdries to haircuts to silk presses. I aim to finish my last client by 4:45pm so I can head home to sort dinner before picking up baby by 6pm.
Friday
Today’s a shoot day so again I wake up at 4am, do a quick workout and get ready. I wake up baby at 6:15am and drop him off to the childminder by 7am and head to the set.
When I get to set I usually have breakfast on arrival which is often an iced coffee and a
With brides I like to blowdry and put rollers in first and then start on a few other people, then move back to the bride to finish the look and let it set. Then I’ll complete the bridal party and help the bride get into her dress. After my bride I head back home to spend the afternoon with my little boy; either a soft play session or to the park. Then it’s time for a family dinner and movie night.
Sunday
I wake up and go to church in the morning and afterwards we like to go out for breakfast as a family and then have a family day out; depending on the weather we’ll go to the beach or have a day at the zoo or the aquarium. Sundays are always about family.

TRENDS
JUST BROWS-ING
Eyebrows have become a much bigger part of our beauty routines since the pandemic and are now seen as a key way of not only shaping the face, but expressing who we are. Two key brow trends for 2023 are brow lamination and bleached brows. Of course, brow lamination has been enjoying popularity for a while now, but it’s the SS23 fashion shows that are showing us just how many amazing brow shapes can be sculpted with lamination.
Bleaching is something that clients of every skin tone and hair colour are playing with; and the results don’t have to be platinum blonde.
From ginger brows to deep chocolate brown, everyone is enjoying a lighter coloured brow as it really opens up the eyes.
Check out: our Brow Lamination, Lash Lift and Tinting Masterclass to ensure you’re up to date with the latest shapes and techniques.
EASY BREEZY, GLOWING SKIN
Dewy skin has been in for a while, but for 2023 it’s less about applying highlighters, and more about what’s underneath. Even backstage at fashion week, the emphasis was on skin prep, not makeup.
Winter is always a stressful time for skin, so now is the ideal time to encourage clients in for facial peels, exfoliation and facial massages. Always advise them on daily skincare that hydrates and protects the skin, to keep the results for longer.
Check out: our range of skincare courses, from facials to dermaplaning for guaranteed glowing skin.
and finishes which will be used as bases for nail art, French manicures and glazed tips. The iridescent two-tone soft look is achieved with top coats and pearly chrome powders and really is the nail version of the ‘dewy girl aesthetic’,” says Metta.
You can find a full list of all our courses at capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk/training today!
EXTREME SHINE
Whatever your clients’ hair length or colour, 2023 is all about upping the shine factor. Think deep hydration treatments like Olaplex, glossing services from Redken and plenty of at-home hair masking. From textured styles to sleek looks, it’s all about hair looking healthy.
On a side note, the preferred way to wear a glossy look is likely going to be super slicked back; Anne Veck says it’s all about finding the balance between looking styled without looking too wet: “finding the right product is key to making this look work.”
Check out: your service menu – is it offering glossing treatments? They don’t take long and are a brilliant way at upselling your services and increasing the bottom line.
YUMMY
Award-winning nail tech Metta Francis says that we’re still going to be in love with glazed doughnut nails.
“The trend will continue into 2023 and we’ll see a demand for pearlescent tones
Think Krispy Kreme with a glistening touch of icing. For nail tech and #OPIBoss Dani Bailey, the trend isn’t that new but is in high demand. She says: “We’ve been using chrome forever – I don’t know how many times it has come in and out of fashion! But Hailey Bieber and @nailsbyzola definitely put glazed donut nails back on the map: even brides want it now!”
Check out: our range of nail courses with The Manicure Company and Gellux; we’ve got everything from nail art trends to acrylic extensions for you to choose from.
NIGHT OWL/ NOCTURNAL
If you’re up on your TikTok trends then you might have heard phrases such as ‘indie sleaze’, ‘sad girl’ and ‘night owl’ – all trends that are heavily inspired by a key ‘90s trend: grunge, as well as hit TV show Euphoria . It’s all about dark hair – think blues, blacks and purples – the octopus haircut, dark makeup and of course, dark nails.
Check out: our full range of colour courses, from balayage and freehand to colour correction and bleaching.

Simply Beautiful
My prediction for party season is beautiful yet simple hair. Think classic, yet understated and glamorous. Clients love looks that can be easily recreated in the salon or at home and a sleek, straight look with a side parting is a subtly glamorous style. To maintain a style like this it’s all about regular trims and blowdries to keep hair sleek and super shiny. Jack Kilpatrick, owner and Director of JKPHairspa
Big and Bouncy
This year has been one of excess volume, height and extreme shine. When creating a look like this, it’s important to create as much volume as possible, early on. I recommend prepping the hair with a volumising shampoo and conditioner, massaging the products into the scalp and evenly distributing throughout the hair. Then, using a large barrel brush, focus the heat at the roots and then lift and dry from root to tip. I would also recommend using a protective finishing spray for instant frizz reduction, zero static and boosted shine. Gill Berry
Glam with a capital G
The festive season is all about glam, glam, glam. We’re going to see a lot of bouncy blow out’s reminding us of the iconic ‘70s era. One of our go-to looks for this season is texture; whether that’s via a crimped wave, a bouncy curl or a subtle bend through straight hair – it’s all about texture. Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty
Blissed out Braids
This is one of my favourite trends that’s gone from being a popular summer style to a real party favourite. I love to combine a pretty lattice braid with some gorgeous, soft waves. This braid method uses multiple strands of hair, weaved in different directions to create a basketwoven lattice look across the section. Even creating this in a small square section will make a real statement. Finish the look with a professional shine spray for that final touch of perfection. Darrel Starkey,
Taylor’s Hair Studio
Super Sleek
Super long and sleek – the glass hair trend is all about super long, luscious-looking hair! It’s easy to create with the help of a hairdryer, before going over the hair with heated styling tools, but it’s essential that you’ve done the right moisturising prep. Always use a quality hydrating shampoo and conditioner, followed with a heat protection spray to keep hair protected and glossy at all times. Tina Farey, Editorial Director, RUSH Hair
Upside Down
A modern version on the half up, half down style is a relaxed updo braid with waterfall waves – it’s a blend of two highly-requested styles at our salons! It’s low maintenance and easily tailored to suit the client and their style. Andrew Smith, z.one

Retro Luxe
Vintage hair is coming back and the glamorous ‘60s-inspired bouffant is a style that works for many and can be adapted to suit any hair type and preference. I think there’s been a real shift from the once prevalent blowdry with tonged ends, to a more relaxed texture as clients embrace their natural hair. For me, a textured bouffant is the height of style for any New Years Eve celebration.

MEN’S HAIR
FRESH AND MODERN
Brodie Raeside, OSMO Ambassador and owner of Heavy Hands in Ilkeston, Derbyshire says it’s time to freshen up.
“I’m seeing a lot more clients moving to more skin taper focused styles, rather than skin fade. A taper is just a miniature fade at each temple and on the nape of the neck, and it gives the client the option of growing out the rest of the hair while still feeling fresh and modern. A lot of these same clients seem to be growing their hair into brushed or swept back styles, with more length and movement on the top and sides, either straight back or more often with curtains – a definite late ‘90s style, reminiscent of footballing hero David Beckham – or a side part.”
BACK TO THE NINETIES
For award-winning stylist Jason Hall, the ‘90s has a special place in his heart when it comes to this season’s men’s hair. In fact, the theme for Jason’s newest men’s hair collection, North Country Boy, is rooted in relaxed, floppy looks that would have been seen on the likes of ‘90s indie bands such as The Charlatans and The Stone Roses.
Jason says: “Most men’s collections have always been based roughly on the same things:
football, fashion, friends and music, and a lot of young clients are listening to music from the ‘90s, so it makes sense that trends would come full circle.”
Jason’s North Country Boy collection was inspired by a playlist of his favourite songs from 30 years ago, which only added further inspiration when it came to styling each of the looks.
Overall, Jason predicts a return to longer hair, as throughout the pandemic, many male clients have got used to having more length, and are more versed in taking care of it. Even the traditional short back and sides has been updated with longer length on top.
When it comes to styling products, Brodie highly recommends OSMO Matt Salt Spray on wet hair; he says the key is to really work it through before blow drying.
“This will swell the hair a little and give it the grit that I need and encourage texture and movement.
Once I’m happy with my blowdry, I’ll use OSMO Matt Clay Extreme, working from back to front, again really working the product in. This provides solid hold for our shape and texture and a touch of moisture to the hair to bring the style to life.
“For shinier/finer hair types that can’t take too much product, try OSMO Power Powder, a volumising
powder which is completely dry but gives an insane hold and lift to the style,” says Brodie.

FREELANCE FOCUS
With busy times you can see an increase in bookings, and an increase in stress. Here some of our faves share their practical tips to dealing with overwhelm and staying on top.
Don’t forget to look after yourself. Make sure you’re hydrated and have a big bottle of water to hand, as well as healthy snacks and foods you can eat quickly in between clients – fresh fruit, protein bars, nuts, etc. Try and stick to three meals a day to keep your body nourished and energy levels up. You can prepare breakfast/lunch the day before – overnight oats, bagels, sandwiches, wraps, and physically schedule in time to eat and have breaks. Get some fresh air, spend some time stretching or even do a 10-minute yoga video – anything to give your eyes a break too! Metta
Francis @nailsbymets
As a freelancer, I like to ensure that my festive period diary fits in as many clients as I can handle, without overworking myself. Many clients will be coming in for what I call ‘Christmas blowdry season’, so I offer these as shorter services to fit in between my colour appointments. Then I’ll offer all my clients who come in over November and December a free treatment with any appointment that they book in January. This ensures that my January period is busy, as it’s often quiet immediately after Christmas.
It’s important to look after your regular clients but don’t over-book or over work yourself! I actually plan in two tea
breaks per day in my diary, just so I get some time to catch my breath and gather my thoughts. Finally, don’t be afraid to be strict when it comes to last minute appointments. If you can do it: great, but if it’s going to make you feel stressed, it’s not worth it. Abbey Jarrold, UK Ambassador for Indola
My top tip would be to never take on more than you can handle. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Remember to keep a level of work/life balance so that you can enjoy the festive period too! Always make time for the things that you enjoy and plan them into your diary. For me, that’s getting a workout in at the gym, and I always make sure I can fit it in throughout the week. Another key tip is to stay on top of your diary and don’t slack on your organisation. By working as efficiently as you can you’ll help reduce stress. Jay Birmingham,
Celebrity hairdresser
My top tip has to be take time for yourself – it’s vital. At such a busy time of year, working seven days a week becomes the norm, in order to accommodate every client and all their requirements. However, this will lead to burnout so it’s important that you have adequate time off in order to relax and recharge for the following week.
Secondly, be strict on your working hours and set boundaries. We all love our clients and do what we can to put them first, but please stick to your working hours only. Your down time is your time to relax and unwind. Set boundaries when it comes to replying to messages – you don’t have to reply immediately and you can also set an auto-response. Clients will understand that you too need time to yourself.
Darrel Starkey,
Taylor’s Hair Studio
The number one rule is always have a back-up plan. We all know that sometimes things can end up out of our control, however ensuring you have plans to cover every issue are key to surviving this busy season. If you get sick – what do you do? If you experience a whole host of cancellations – what do you do? Think of all these things and plan ahead – hopefully it won’t be needed but if you plan ahead you’ll feel that much better for it. KNOW YOUR ABC S
The issue: heated tools
The issue: cold outside, warm inside
Winter is around the corner and your clients have probably started using their central heating to fight off the cold. But while it’s keeping them warm, it can massively affect how their skin functions, and even their hair. Central heating gives out very dry heat, meaning that after a few hours, skin can start to feel irritated, itchy and dry; for some it can even start to produce excess sebum, resulting in breakouts.
The same goes for the skin on your clients’ scalp; both dryness and excessive oiliness can occur and they might find themselves feeling irritated and scratching their scalp more often. Ensure they have regular exfoliating scrub treatments, followed by hydrating masks to ensure the scalp is left feeling soft and the hair is shiny not greasy, and flake-free.
Think: P for Protein/Keratin
For hair that’s super glossy, protein or keratin, is a key ingredient and will ensure that hair cuticles stay smooth and shiny, as opposed to dry and brittle.
The festive season is that time when even the most simply styled clients often ask for something a bit more special. This often means big blowouts and updos, or for some it’s all about a gorgeous, poker straight finish. Using heated tools isn’t a problem if you’re recommending some solid heat protection options. But if a straightener is your client’s daily go-to, you’ll also need to encourage them to use regular oil treatments and deep hydration masks. Otherwise, the heated tool’s effects, alongside the cold temperatures outside could cause split ends and even breakage. For regular heated tool users, advise them of a regime that not only fortifies and strengthens, but will provide bond care too. Redken’s Acidic Bonding Concentrates range features the active ingredient of Citric Acid; it’s small enough to enter the hair fibre and leave the hair twice as strong, with weak bonds strengthened and pH balance restored.
Think: F for Fatty Acids
Any products containing Macadamia Oil are going to be highly recommended in the colder months. Unlike many other oils, Macadamia Oil is able to deep penetrate the hair shaft and is rich in antioxidants.
The issue: icy cold temperatures
While it’s easy to cover up with cosy cardigans and coats, protecting our skin is a lot more difficult during the winter months. Add to that an increase in existing complaints, such as acne and rosacea, plus chapped lips, windburn, eczema and the so-called winter itch – that feeling you get when your hands and feet are so cold and dry – and your clients’ skin could end up feeling, and looking, less than happy.
Now is a time to add warming mani/pedi treatments, hydrating facials and relaxation rituals to your service menu and be sure to check in with your clients to discuss any changes they’ve noticed in their skin. This way you can suggest improvements to their current regime and provide a more bespoke treatment.
Think: G for Glycerin
While new and innovative ingredients and products pop up every other week, there’s nothing like good old Glycerin to keep skin soft and soothed. Glycerin naturally binds to water, meaning it’s perfect for applying on top of your recommended serums and moisturisers to really lock in hydration.

18 19 THE CAPITAL CUT WINTER 22 ADVICE
As the changes in weather affect your client’s hair and skin be sure you know which ingredients to recommend to keep them in tip-top condition this Winter.
Unsplash Unsplash Unsplash Unsplash
Warm, warm, warm is my prediction! It’s all about colours with gold, copper and red undertones as we move into autumn/winter. Blondes will be buttery and rich with a focus on soft corn shades that will suit a range of skin tones and complexions. Brunettes will be gorgeous cherry brown and laced with coppers and caramels for a multi-tonal finish that creates dimension and movement. Reds will have orange undertones; think coral glow and paprika reds.
Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty
It’s time for something unique and Dimensional Brunette is the trend for Winter 2022, already extremely popular with clients and celebrities alike. It’s about adding a lot of different tones into a rich brown, creating some incredible movement and a very multi-dimensional finish. For those who want to make even more of a statement, adding money pieces to the front or some gorgeous ‘90s-inspired chunky face-framing pieces is the way to go.
Blondes are opting for the lived-in look, going for darker, more blended roots and gorgeous blended colours. Think a much softer, golden, blonde inspired by golden hour, that time just before sunset; it’s so pretty. Again, for those looking to make it a little more bespoke, try adding pastel tones throughout.
Safy Burton, Safy B Salon
My clients are already loving the Bronzed Blonde – think gorgeous, golden blonde with plenty of warmth throughout, that adds to the dimension and resulting in the most beautiful tones.
Ainsley Gray, F&M Hairdressing
Colour is going to be very organic this year and full of warmth. Buttercream blondes, soft golden hues and yellow with pops of gold will be a big hit in salons throughout Winter. Clients are opting for more natural, seamless tones to bring their hair to life. For darker hair, the colours will cool right down, making way for pretty hints of earth tones but we’ll also see some stunning and rich, dark chocolate brunettes.

THE JOURNEY
Warren Edwards, co-owner Warren & The Hare, Dorset
Entering the Warren & The Hare means you’re entering a space that’s welcoming, cosy and professional. With arty touches and detailed finishes, the genderless salon is dedicated to making everyone feel their absolute best. That’s why they have chosen to work with Capital since opening last November.
On the Capital experience, co-owner Warren says: “The whole team are great; they’ll come down last minute – they’ll literally deliver what we need door to door.”
Be sure to check out the salon’s Instagram to see the cutest little pup, Bow, the Cocker Spaniel! @warrenandthehare
Senol Erdogan, London
As someone who started working at just 8 years old, and opened his first barbershop in Turkey at the young age of 14, Londonbased Senol knows the value of having access to the right tools and products.
That’s why he’s been shopping at Capital for the past 10 years. Here’s to the next 10!
@barberkinguk
We’re proud to say that the Capital name means so much when it comes to serving and supporting our customers. Over the past few months, we’ve been connecting with our customers in person, to find out what we’re doing right, and how each of them have come to rely on our knowledgeable in-store teams and training, as well as our one-hour click and collect and online delivery service. Read on to meet some of our customers, from all across the country.
At Slingers, Bobby aims to support his customers by letting them know that they can feel comfortable enough to treat the space like a home away from home, whether that’s via the mental health awareness hashtags in the window, or by offering them a warming glass of whiskey – if they’re not driving!
The vibe of the salon is super chilled and stylish but with a sense of humour and irreverence that’s ultimately all about comfort. That’s why the salon chose Capital for its recent barber chair upgrade: Bobby opted for the timeless Soho Barber Chair in black, and so far, the response has been hugely positive. @slingers. barbers

ADDED VALUE
Have you heard of the Metaverse?
Some time in the future, if Meta (owner of Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook has its way) we will all have our own enhanced versions of ourselves, living and shopping in the Metaverse, a world of digital spaces that we can dip in and out of when we feel like it.
While it might seem far-fetched and even a little creepy, we’re already seeing Virtual Reality (VR), Alternative Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) affect how we use our phones, how we shop and how we organise ourselves. It’s still a way away, but there are definitely some positive things we can take from the world of tech as it moves forward, right now.
NEW IDENTITY
For instance, you could use the Metaverse to create a virtual salon that acts as a marketing tool to drive footfall into your bricks and mortar salon. Clients can try on what they like virtually, and then come to you with a more specific idea in mind.
In fact, when it comes to the client trying on anything they like, we might well see the Metaverse encouraging even the least experimental client to try something completely out of their comfort zone. It could be a brand new way of expression for those who might often choose a ‘safe bet’ when it comes their hair colour and style.
NEW TOOLS
The Metaverse has already made an impact on the industry, with many people undertaking virtual consultations during the pandemic choosing to keep it up even though restrictions have lifted. I think the tools that are being developed within this virtual reality would make for a great consultation service, as it could likely give the client a more realistic vision of what styles they can wear, and what we as stylists could achieve, giving a very near likeness of the end result. It will be a tool that gives the client a lot more confidence and will allow them to be more flexible time-wise if they are given the option of a virtual consultation.
Darrel Starkey, Taylor’s Hair Studio
A NEW WAY TO EDUCATE?
VR is already changing how hair education works – it seems those couple of years that we spent adjusting to communicating via Zoom have made us more flexible in how we teach and learn. Think of how you might train your staff in the future, with interactive methods that incorporate visual and audio devices.
DON’T LOSE TOUCH
Physical interaction and engagement is so vital to our industry that after the past few years, I feel a virtual life could negatively impact not only our industry but many more, and could negatively impact the individual. But it is is forever evolving and continuously making headway so it makes sense to use the tools it provides to us as stylists and salon owners if it can make our clients’ lives easier. Having a tool which provides realistic expectations would give clients an opportunity to experiment more.
Likewise more virtual consultations would take the pressure of clients finding suitable times to physically come into the salon. Andrew Smith, Andrew Smith Salons
While Andrew’s concerns are definitely being echoed within the industry, with a strong emphasis on hairdressing being a ‘hands-on’ talent, an ideal future would be one where the Metaverse is used as an experimental tool, while hairdressing itself remains a very human skill.

THE WINTER NAIL TRENDS
YOUR CLIENTS CAN’T WAIT TO WEAR!
Winter is here and there’s no denying that nails are about to get a whole lot darker. But alongside that depth, there’s some serious shimmer too. Read on for our top seasonal trends, and we’ve also thrown in two Christmas step by steps – be sure to show us yours over on Instagram! Just tag @capitalhair so we can see you.
Cosy chic
A trend that’s perfect for clients who just want pretty, simple nails has to be neutral browns. From rich chocolates to warm cinnamon and toffee shades, it’s all about cosy vibes and there’s a brown to suit every skintone and nail length. This trend can be kept super chic with one creamy shade all over, a two-tone effect or you can take it to the next level by adding some shimmer or gold leaf.
After Dark
Social media has massively influenced nail trends this year, and TikTok is definitely leading the way when it comes to sharing micro trends. For instance, in the mainstream, dark shades like purples and browns always come into play for Winter; but on TikTok that darkness is broken down into mini trends, such as Night Owl and Indie Sleaze – mentioned earlier in our 2023 trend review on page 10 –both of which contain deep metallic tones, think gunmetal grey and dirty silver and some grungy embellishment.
Shimmering sights
For award-winning nail tech Metta Francis, chrome is back in a big way. Chrome was a major hit a few years back, and now the likes of Lizzo and Kim Kardashian are loving it for a red carpet look. It makes sense that Metta says it’s time to reach for your metallic powders again.
“Chrome was huge on the fashion week catwalks and we’re going to see it used in so many different ways, from full coverage, accent metallics, chrome tips and intricate nail art and we’re going to see it in every colour imaginable at every length.
You can expect to see more wearable silvers on short, natural nails for an everyday look and for longer, more extreme lengths we’ll see classic golds, greens and purples,” says the Londonbased tech.
Of course, the glazed doughnut trend is all about shimmering, natural nails too – if you want to know more, head to our trends focus on page 10.

FESTIVE SPIRIT
Candy coated
Here we’ve got two gorgeous Christmas nail step by steps for you. First up it’s a candy cane design by Jaz Mogers using Gellux.
#1
Prepare the nails by filing to shape, pushing back the cuticle, and buffing the nail plate. Cleanse nails and apply GELLUX Fast Bond. Then apply a coat of GELLUX Light Pink Builder Gel and cure.
#2
Using GELLUX Purely White and a fine liner nail art brush, paint a French tip. Don’t worry about it being too neat! Once drawn, cure for 30 seconds.
#3
Next, paint a line down the side of the nail with GELLUX Purely White and cure for 30 seconds.
#5
Using GELLUX Meteorite, paint thin red lines to create the candy cane’s stripes.
#6
#4
Perfect the candy cane design and round off its edges with another coat of GELLUX Purely White and cure.
Christmas lights
Finish the design by painting two coats of GELLUX Super Shiny topcoat and cure between each layer. Once cured, wipe over the nails with GELLUX Prep + Wipe and be sure to oil the cuticles.
Next we’ve got this pretty fairy lights design from Dani Bailey of @danibaileynailartist using OPI.
#1
Start with two coats of OPI GelColor ‘You’ve Got That GlasGlow’. After curing, wipe the tacky layer with IPA 99%.
#2
Using OPI GelColor in ‘Lady In Black’, load a thin striper brush for the design. The trick
is to use a tiny amount on the brush each time, making sure all the bristles are coated evenly. This allows for really accurate detail.
#3
Draw the cord for the lights first, the add a dot where every individual light will be.
#4
Mixing some top coat with golden chrome, make the golden gel for the lights, then, using the tip of the brush, apply a dot of golden gel and drag it gently downwards to create the lightbulb shape.
#5
Add some details by adding a tiny amount of white gel through the ‘lights’.
I used OPI GelColor ‘Alpine Snow’. Then just apply your top coat and you’re all done. So pretty!
