A WEEK IN

Today is a very special day as we begin to revamp the salon. For me it’s a gift for my clients as well as my team and I think staying at the top of your game in this industry is all about putting your team first. I actually enjoyed wearing the hard hat and boots to be honest! I can’t wait to share a whole new era for Errol Douglas London.

Check out this sneaky peek at my British Hairdressing Awards – British Hairdresser of the Year nomination entry for 2023! This year I chose to travel to Melbourne, Australia to shoot with the legend that is Andrew O’Toole and I am over the moon with the results. The British Hairdressing Awards

mean so much to me – I’ve been nominated by my fellow hairdressers for the title 26 times and I’m still determined to grab that trophy.

Friday It’s no surprise that my favourite days of the week either see me working on shoots or educating other stylists. I also love collaborating with brands; this shot is from a recent shoot I did for Uberliss.

Saturday As much as I love my career there is nothing better than getting my family together for fun times and holidays – I’m really looking forward to showing them Australia later this year! I’m away quite a bit as I’m often taking part in international shows that can see me working anywhere from South Korea to Texas, so it’s nice to be able to travel with my family when possible.

Sunday I truly love my work and will be forever grateful for the many opportunities my career has given me. I try to pass that on by investing time in the future talent of the hair industry. Here I am pictured with legends Akin Konizi and Sally Brooks after a day of judging for the Fellowship for British Hairdressing F.A.M.E. team finals. As a former F.A.M.E. team member and Ambassador myself it feels good to be able to witness the talent of the future.

Errol’s Advice

“Don’t rush to get behind that chair. Your skill set and creative genius will grow from the strong foundations you form as a trainee. Patience is a virtue, and after that – it’s about determination. Follow those you respect and look up to in the industry and never miss an opportunity.”

THE GREATEST NIGHT IN BRITISH

HAIRDRESSING! Come with us to the Wella Trend Vision Awards What made the night even more special was the fact that we joined forces with Wella to offer a unique opportunity to Capital Hair and Beauty students. The inaugural Wella x TrendVision award competition was a call to action for budding hair stylists who were tasked with creating a captivating Instagram post showcasing their colour transformations, complete with before and after photographs. With more than 700 guests in attendance, the Wella Trend Vision Awards were a feast for the eyes. Taking place along the banks of the Thames River, overlooking the stunning London skyline, the night was all about celebrating the best in British hairdressing. An annual competition, the Wella TVA preparation started earlier this year with an online photographic entry and culminated with this prestigious evening where some truly iconic and creative looks were on display. Hosted by the legendary hair-up maestro Patrick Cameron, alongside Fergal Doyle (you can see more from Fergal on page 28 where he shares his ultimate social media tips), the night was packed with creative showcases from the likes of Wella artists such as Cheynes, Cobella, Francesco Hair Salons, Hob Academy, Lara Johnson Lifestyle, Nikki Clifford from NJUK, Simon Tuckwell and Stil.

Victoria’s winning entry

The winning entry by Victoria Crooks (see above), selected by Wella and Capital, offered the ultimate prize—an allaccess pass to the TrendVision awards. First Victoria experienced an exclusive backstage tour before attending

the awards ceremony, where she enjoyed dinner, dancing, cocktails, and endless inspiration. Look out for next year’s competition and it might be you! TrendVision Award winners received some incredible money-can’t-buy prizes on the night: a tailored education development plan for the winner and their salon, including a professional photoshoot and digital content creation session, plus lots more.

The Little Princess Trust Also in attendance on this wonderful night was the Little Princess Trust, a charity that is supported by Wella and is dedicated to working with children with cancer, providing them with hope and hair. Phil Brace, Chief Executive of The Little Princess Trust, said: “The relationship with Wella Company UKI creates a phenomenal platform to amplify our message, generate much-needed hair donations and influence fundraising.” 8

Leaflets, posters and window stickers promoting The Little Princess Trust’s work have been sent out to hundreds of Wella salons to promote the partnership and Phil, alongside LPT Founder Wendy Tarplee-Morris, has addressed Wella staff and Wella clients to tell them how they can support the charity’s work for children with cancer.

Max Amen, Managing Director of Wella Company UKI, said of the new partnership: “Working closely with the Wella Community, we are committed to making a significant impact to children and young individuals battling hair loss due to cancer treatments and other illnesses, while also funding vital research into childhood cancers to aid the ongoing fight against these devastating diseases.” For more information on the Little Princess Trust visit littleprincesses.org.uk 9

SKIN CYCLING

First, exfoliate

0 1

Exfoliation is the first step in enabling products to penetrate the skin, because it removes any dead skin cells that directly impact the look and feel of the skin. In the salon this could be a liquid peel or a physical exfoliant, like the Strictly Professional Facial Exfoliant 450ml £7.86/€8.95 which combines Mallow

Extract and Aloe to ensure a gentle yet efficient scrub.

fine lines and pores. The most popular Retinoid is undoubtedly Retinol, but Tretinoin is also becoming popular, although it works faster than Retinol and as such can cause some skin irritation. The key is to find the right ingredient and formula for your client – Retinoids come in the form of serums and moisturisers and should only be applied as part of an evening skincare routine. SPF the following morning – every morning – is a must to ensure the skin doesn’t become over-sensitive, red and irritated. The +serumology Retinol Overnight Serum 30ml £5.95/€7.00 is a powerful

anti-ageing treatment that uses hydrating Sea Kelp and organic Pine Oil to promote Collagen production, a natural occurring protein that keeps skin looking plump and glowing.

You can also advise clients on a gentle solution they can use at home. This could be a BHA liquid that they pat into skin before hydrating their skin in the evening, or they could use a face wash with Salicylic Acid in the mornings, which is a great option for those with more sensitive skin.

PRO TIPS ON SKIN CYCLING Marina Hodgins of Fringe Benefits and La Bella Beauty in Gloucester gives her top tips to teaching your clients about skin cycling and recommending treatments that work alongside the regime. Start Slowly

If your client is new to either exfoliation or Retinol, it’s important to start with lower concentrations and assess their skin’s reaction. Once you know there is no irritation you can gradually increase frequency or concentration. Patch Test

A patch test is always recommended when you’re ready to try something new on your clients to ensure there’s no adverse reaction.

SPF

If you ever spend time on social media then you’ll definitely have heard about skin cycling, or skin fasting. During the pandemic this three-step regime rose to popularity as many of us had more time to spend on pursuing our ‘perfect’ skin. Read on to find out the what and why of skin cycling and how you can build it into your beauty therapy menu.

10

What is skin cycling?

One caveat with exfoliating – it’s easily overdone. Overuse of exfoliating ingredients can leave skin feeling sensitive and dry, and worst case, it can even compromise the delicate skin barrier. Once this happens it’s important to stop any use of active ingredients and focus on hydration. When it comes to your clients it’s important to note any changes in their at-home skincare routine so that whatever treatment you’re applying doesn’t affect their skin in a negative way. And vice versa; check in with your clients and tell them what they should focus on in the coming weeks post-treatment, so that they can make the most of the treatment they’ve received from you.

Skin cycling is a skincare regime that builds in active days that feature ingredients that work to slough off dead skin cells, followed by a rest day where your skin gets to heal and hydrate. Think of it as like starting a new workout or gym routine; you wouldn’t go every day because your body needs to rest.

Next, activate

Skin cycling works on the same premise, starting with a day of exfoliation, a day of Retinol – a well-known active – and a day or two of rest, depending on your skin type. Then you start all over again. Here’s why.

Once the skin has been exfoliated on night one, the next night is the opportunity to take advantage of that smoother surface, with a Retinoid. Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, known to accelerate cell turnover and help to reduce the look of wrinkles,

Now rest After two active nights, it’s time to give the skin time to restore and rejuvenate itself with ingredients that hydrate. Focus on creating a ‘moisture sandwich’ with mists, serums and creams that contain Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamins C and E and always start with damp skin. This way the skin has the best chance of reaping all the hydration benefits. Monuskin Hydrating

Don’t forget, daily application of SPF is vital when using Retinol, as it is known to increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays. Complementary

Customised facials will complement your clients’ skin cycling regime as you can offer a bespoke treatment. Consider incorporating gentle exfoliation, a hydrating mask or massage techniques to enhance relaxation and results.

Moisturiser SPF15 180ml £34.95 is the

KEEP IT GLOSSY

Just because it’s cold outside, that doesn’t mean blondes are cooling off. For Lincoln Alexander of 65 Walton Street, blondes are beautiful and textured. He says: “Lately we’re seeing blondes turn into these gorgeous, muted golds with a soft blended root; they’re becoming much more multi-dimensional as opposed to a solid, overall look. It’s about warm, golden hues that really embrace shine and health.”

Brunettes are going through their most exciting time with two key trends to play with. For Marina Hodgins it’s all about the Liquid Brunette. Think sumptuous hot chocolates with extreme gloss. Marina says:

Indola

She says: “this colour is all about subtlety and is the opposite of what we’ve been seeing so far this year, a much warmer blonde balayage. Instead, the technique gives the hair dimension while reducing the amount of shadows and providing a softer contrast. The natural soft finish allows for lower maintenance so it’s a great option for blondes who want to go low-key but look expensive at the same time.”

“Liquid brunette is the epitome of shine and luxury. To keep the look for longer, it’s important to advise clients to invest in high-quality professional aftercare. That way they get to hold on to that beautifully glossy, mirror-like finish that reflects the light from every angle.” The second key brunette trend of the season has to be the Candlelit Brunette. For Marney Lian this trend breaks up the brown to provide dimension to the hair whilst still showcasing a glowing, natural look. Marney shares how she achieves the look: “Get the Candlelit Brunette by using babylights that incorporate tones a few shades lighter than the natural colour. The roots are left natural and the babylights will seamlessly flow throughout the mid to ends of the hair resulting in that glowing candlelit effect,” says Marney.

COMPLEMENTARY CARAMELS But what about those clients who are in between the blonde and brunette categories? OSMO Ambassador Jake Nugent says caramel highlights are the way forward. “Caramel highlights are a great way to add warmth and dimension to the hair without going too dark, as is often the way when it comes to those colder months. Caramels offer a really subtle, natural-looking highlight and give a touch of brightness to the hair – the best part is, it doesn’t matter if your client is a natural brunette or blonde, as caramel highlights can work for both. One thing with this trend is that it works best with high shine so encourage your clients to use regular deep conditioning masks and shine sprays. I often recommend clients use products aimed at keeping colour fresh Wella Professionals and glossy at home, so Colour Fresh Mask conditioners and glosses Caramel Glaze 150ml £10.95/€13.95 are perfect,” advises Jake.

MAKE IT EXPENSIVE

Here Rachael Lomax, AKA the Copper Queen, shares why she loves the Cowboy Copper and Whiskey trends for this season.

Schwarzkopf Professional

Whatever the colour trend this season, one thing’s for sure, it’s all about luxurious shine! Read on for our expert tips and trend knowledge. 12

The reason I’m super excited for Cowboy Coppers and Whiskey shades is because you have to be specific. Yes, as professionals there are tons of options to choose from but you have to be careful with these shades. If you go too far the results can turn out too red or too gold, which can then brown out, so it’s all about finding that fine line between the two. But that doesn’t mean you can’t play, and I would definitely advise colourists to consider their pigment choices when playing with these two colour trends; maybe adding mahogany or copper mahogany could add an individual touch. Also, a good tip if you feel that things are going a bit too golden is to add a little violet to your formulas. When it comes to Whiskey coppers, I’ve been loving adding a copper ash tone to really make this shade pop while also offering a softer alternative for guests who want to gently dip their toe into the trend. I think now is a great time to educate yourself on colour theory as the copper trend is here to stay.

Update on a classic Does the bob ever go out of style? Short answer: No. The reason for the evergreen appeal of the bob is because, depending on the length, it’s a look that can suit any face shape or hair texture. Right now it can be anything from a short and swingy French girl bob, a luxurious long bob or a razor cut curly bob. For Tori Kiff, it’s about keeping things fresh with the addition of a fringe. “I love updating a classic curly bob with a fringe, especially as so many of my curly clients seem to think it’s a style they shouldn’t have. I’ve managed to show so many clients that it’s all down to fear and that actually, a curly bob is so flattering and easy to style; I advise them to use their fingers to curl their fringes or to use a brush when styling,” shares Tori. Of course the most modern way to wear a bob is the Bixie, a hybrid of the bob and pixie; think classic bob updated with a fringe or micro bangs, or you could play with the Butterfly Bob. RUSH Creative Director Andy Heasman’s a fan.

“The butterfly bob is a great choice for anyone who doesn’t want a traditional ‘block’ bob. It’s a style that encompasses short and long layers and texture to give a more effortless finish. The bob usually hits between the chin and above the shoulders and features a longer layer around the cheekbones with shorter, more feathered layers around the face to help compliment and frame the facial features. The ends of the hair should be cut bluntly to give thickness and fullness. With that in mind, this haircut is particularly great for those with thinner hair types who want their hair to appear thicker,” advises Andy.

Forever ‘90s inspo The love for the glamour of the ‘90s supermodels isn’t going anywhere, and you can expect the trend to continue now that Apple TV has launched the fly-on-the-wall documentary series The Supermodels. From big, bouncy blowouts and IT Girl longer layers to super thick headbands, it’s all in the styling says Ellie Smith, of Smith England.

“I’m really loving the use of ‘90s styling, specifically those thick black headbands the supermodels used to wear because they’re so versatile. You can style a headband with sexy IT girl bombshell layers or as seen on Euphoria actress Alexa Demie in the new Calvin Klein ads: simply scrape all hair back away from the face then add the headband ensuring it sits between the forehead and hair. The hair should then come forward around the headband for that classic ‘90s style,” says Ellie. And it’s not just the super thick headband that’s having a revival; some of you might also remember the zigzag, or comb headbands of the ‘90s and the early 2000s. These super skinny headbands slide back into the hair creating tiny little partings, and for Marney Lian of Gritt London, they’re ideal for controlling flyaways. She says the bands “provide a clean, controlled look with minimal effort and are also a useful accessory for active clients.”

Many of your clients won’t be looking for a complete style makeover in the colder months; often it’s more about something to refresh their look ahead of the festive season. A super quick way to update a bob, or longer lengths is to add a fringe. Marina Hodgins says:

“A classic bob never goes out of fashion but by adding a fringe or micro bangs you can achieve a fresh new style that can be tailored to any face shape.”

Ellie Smith agrees: “fringes and bangs are perfect for enhancing features! Look at the client’s face shape and decide on the most flattering length of the fringe or bangs. They are perfect for highlighting the cheekbones, and jaw while a full fringe will help to disguise any thinning

The ultimate in glamour Super long hair has always been synonymous with glamour. From the likes of Blake Lively front row at New York Fashion Week to Priyanka Chopra at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, long hair is truly having a moment. The key to wearing it is all in the layers, and the cut of the day is the IT Girl bombshell layered look. Marney Lian explains. “The IT Girl bombshell long layered cut is an amazing option for those who want to keep their length but also want lots of volume! Focus on creating shorter layers at the top to frame the face and longer layers throughout the rest of the hair. The essence of the cut is the focus on face-framing which can be achieved by blending the layers into the overall cut and then using rollers or round brushes to style the hair with a big, bouncy bombshell blowout!” Visit capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk and capitalhairandbeauty.ie for all your styling kit needs! 15

Winter skin tips f rom Ang Domagala, Aesthetician and owner of the Lekeyah Skin Rejuvenation Centre

SKINCARE RULES

There’s something about the combination of dry indoor heating and icy outside temperatures that wreaks havoc with every skin type. Read on for top tips f rom skincare experts Ang Domagala and Marina Hodgins to ensure your clients are glowing from the outside in.

Acid, Glycerin and Retinol. Retinol helps to support the skin’s moisture retention capabilities by reinforcing the skin barrier and improving its ability to hold onto water.

Stay stimulated While it isn’t necessary to exfoliate every day during the colder months, it’s still wise to advise clients to commit to it regularly. Advise them on an exfoliant that suits their skin – we have a wealth of ingredients to choose from, such as AHAs, BHAs, enzymes, and gentle physical exfoliants. By keeping up with regular exfoliation, dead skin cells will be removed and it will also help to promote cell turnover, so overall the skin will look brighter and more radiant. But it’s definitely not the time to overdo it – too much exfoliation can damage the skin barrier, and make skin super sensitive.

It all starts with hydration I am constantly advising my clients that staying hydrated is crucial for healthy, radiant skin, and that includes telling them to up their water intake throughout the day. When it comes to the outside, advise your clients to consider products that are loaded with ingredients that help to lock in moisture, such as Hyaluronic

Kiss it better One thing I am always telling my clients is: “don’t forget your lips!” It’s so easy to spend time beautifying our skin and hair but this often means that the lips are neglected. Dry, chapped lips are a common winter complaint and are never a good look, so it’s important that clients keep a trusty lip balm on hand to keep lips hydrated. There are also

some really lovely overnight lip masks out there, and for clients that love those plumping lipglosses, just make sure they go for something with added hydration – many lip plumping glosses focus more on ingredients that stimulate for that plumping effect and can leave the lips quite dry over time.

Beauty sleep As an experienced skin aesthetician, I can’t stress enough the importance of a good night’s sleep and the effect it has on our skin. Getting enough sleep is crucial for healthy skin. I always advise my clients to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night and recommend a silk pillowcase to help prevent wrinkles and protect the skin from any damage.

Mental health No matter what we put into or on our bodies, stress and anxiety can take a toll on our skin, so it’s important to address our stress levels. Taking time to practice self-care activities, or to exercise, catchup with friends or join a yoga class can really bring joy and in turn, relieve stress. I truly believe that taking care of my clients’ skin in the colder months is a balance of hydration, exfoliation, a good diet and making selfcare a priority.

cleansers that can be drying and strip the skin of its natural oils. Follow this with a hydrating moisturiser that works with your clients’ skin type. Incorporate a hydrating serum with humectant properties into your facials. Ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid will help to attract and retain moisture in the skin. Even in winter, UV rays can harm the skin. Don’t ever let your clients forget their sunscreen. Hot water can be drying to the skin. Advise clients to use lukewarm water when cleansing to prevent excessive moisture loss. Gentle exfoliation once a week will enable moisturisers and serums to penetrate better.

textured or Afro hair, it’s important to note the differences in caring for it as the temperatures drop. Here, Sydney, Australia-based Rumbie

Ellie says: “I will always encourage my clients to use a hair mask at home and if possible, I tell them to wear it overnight. Then the next morning they can rinse it out and leave it to airdry. However, if they can’t live without their hairdryer, I will always tell them to use it on a lower heat, and the same goes for their hair straighteners. This season is about minimal heat and using heat protectant sprays and creams.”

Rumbie Mutsiwa

Whatever your client does with their hair when they’re not with you, even the laziest of guests can stick on a hair mask while they’re watching TV or working from home. A hair mask that caters to your clients’ needs – dry, fine, coarse etc – will work wonders when used on a regular basis. For OSMO Ambassador and owner of Spectrum Hair in St. Helens, Adele Clarke, it’s about educating the client in the salon then sending them home with their ideal hair mask.

After a summer that’s seen your clients spending their time dipping in and out of the pool, perhaps playing with their colour and relying on heated tools on the daily, you’re probably still seeing a lot of damage. Winter is the perfect time to restore and rejuvenate so read on for our top haircare tips. 20

“During these cold winter months, it’s always a good idea to share the benefits of a hair mask with your clients. I like to explain that a hair mask conditioner is just like using a daily moisturiser – but instead of it being for the skin, it’s for their hair. Regular use of a hair mask keeps the hair lightly hydrated just where it’s needed, smooths the cuticles, and prevents tangled ends and breakage. Hair masks are the perfect tool for improving texture, shine, and manageability of your client’s hair,” says Adele.

for textured haircare.

TAKE IT EASY Textured hair tends to be dryer when compared to straight hair but that doesn’t mean it’s more ‘difficult’ to care for. It’s all about arming your curly clients with an effective, yet simple, routine, so for anyone with wavy, curly or Afro hair, that means products that keep the hair hydrated. A good tip is to also advise your curly or Afro clients to stop using a towel or t-shirt to dry the hair – it’s a common belief that it is more gentle on the hair – but instead advise them to simply squeeze excess water with their hands; this will help remove excess and also allow hydrating products to sink in. In the longterm they will also use less product while still achieving great results.

INVEST IN THE BEST When it comes to curls, always advise high quality products with a high percentage of natural ingredients. Silicones and sulphates can give great styling and straightening results, but by giving them a miss, textured hair can really benefit and end up looking a lot healthier. Keeping the hair hydrated will help fight environmental stressors both inside and outdoors.

STAY HYDRATED Osmo Intensive Deep Repair Mask 1200ml £9.90/€11.30

Trying times There’s something about the Winter months that make the season the most challenging of all. Indoors we ramp up the central heating which feels nice and cosy while actually dehydrating our hair, leaving it more prone to breakage. Outside we’re dealing with choppy winds and torrential downpours that leave us with lank and greasy hair and often scaly scalps. The key is to work out your clients’ maintenance style. There are some clients who relish in the salon treatment and want to feel luxurious while their hair is restored, but there are also those clients who only have 30 minutes to spare, or prefer to treat their hair while multitasking in their home. Once you’re able to confirm what treatment type they are you can sit together and work out a regime that slots into their lifestyle and sees them reap the haircare benefits. By Spring their hair will be ready for anything!

Mutsiwa (seen opposite) shares her top tips

You want to provide your clients’ hair with as much moisture as possible, especially in winter. Advise a moisturising shampoo and a leave-in conditioner with regular deep treatments. Over time a good hydration regime will begin to repair dry, damaged or dull hair. Right now I am loving steam treatments for my curly clients, as they really work to lock in moisture.

Another bonus of using products that keep the hair moisturised is that it also reduces unwanted frizz. I say unwanted because frizz is not a bad thing, it’s just another form of hair texture! However, for clients who do want to minimise it, I would always advise a silk pillowcase to avoid friction while they sleep. 21

Inspired by Ariel in the original movie as well as the gorgeous, real life mermaid Halle Bailey in the new live action Little Mermaid, we’ve seen the most beautiful array of ocean-inspired shades take over TikTok and the trend is definitely sticking around this season. For Nina Perry of Karma Beauty Therapy, #mermaidcore is the perfect way to keep things beachy all year round.

#Mermaidcore

“Think beach scenes with sea pearl details and multidimensional shelllike iridescence in pretty shades of green and blue as well as pops of purple and pink,” says Nina.

There was a time when Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes was the top-selling gloss, or product even, of the 2000s. The candy-scented glosses that left the most perfect glossy pouts, whether opaque or shimmering, were essential to any schoolgirl’s rucksack and any woman’s handbag. Well now that Juicy Tubes are making a comeback, so is that classic wet-look glossy finish, but we’re seeing it on nails, not just lips.

Bettina Goldstein

Nina Perry’s already in love with the trend and says, “who doesn’t remember Juicy Tubes? Lipgloss nails are all about creating a seriously wet look finish -very glass-like in natural, soft hues that work beautifully on a natural nail.”

Frosted metallics are having a moment right now. Beauty brands like MAC Cosmetics are revisiting some of their popular metallic lipsticks of the ‘80s, and at the most recent fashion weeks we’ve seen metallic pouts and metallic hair finishes in shades of bronze and copper. As with any fashion or beauty trend, you can expect it to make a comeback on nails too. It’s time to reach for your chromes and frosted metallics and play with negative space, all-over metals or festive frost finishes.

SOCIALS

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR HAIRDRESSERS:

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLATFORM FOR YOU

Bristol-based Fergal Doyle is an award-winning independent salon owner who has used social media to take his business to incredible heights. Here he shares his expertise and why social media is your most powerful and free marketing tool.

Understanding what each platform does Just 18 months ago I decided to use Instagram to launch what would go on to become an award-winning salon. Alongside TikTok and YouTube, these platforms allow us as hairstylists and beauty professionals to not only showcase our beautiful work but also grow our clientele and our business. However, the sheer variety of social media platforms can be a bit overwhelming, so it’s crucial for us all to understand each one and choose the right platform that aligns with our goals, our dream clientele, our time commitment as well as our level of content creation experience.

INSTAGRAM Instagram is a visual playground for hair and beauty pros. It originally started as a photo sharing social network and today it’s the ideal digital platform for hairdressers looking to share their portfolio, build a community and stay connected with the latest trends. It’s very much about visuals and it’s brilliant for allowing hairstylists to post pics and videos of their hair transformations demonstrating their skills and creativity. Instagram also offers various engagement features like Stories, Reels, and Lives, which allow us to share behind-thescenes content, quick tips, and live tutorials. 28

their expertise and build trust with viewers seeking educational content.

TIKTOK TikTok has gained immense popularity due to its shortform, attentiongrabbing videos. It’s a platform where hair professionals can create quick, engaging content and connect with a younger, trendfocused audience. TikTok videos are typically 15 to 60 seconds long, perfect for hairstylists and beauty pros who want to create quick tutorials, showcase transformations, or participate in trending challenges. TikTok thrives on trends and challenges, providing opportunities for hairstylists to have their content go viral and gain widespread (often global) recognition. TikTok primarily attracts a younger demographic, making it a suitable platform for hairstylists targeting Gen Z and Millennials but as it moves into longer form content and visual podcasts I think the audience could widen.

YOUTUBE YouTube is the go-to platform for those who want to offer in-depth tutorials, establish themselves as experts in the field, and connect with a dedicated audience interested in detailed hairstyling techniques.

Which platform is right for you and your business? It’s important to work out what type of creative you are. Ask yourself, are you a Visual Storyteller? Someone skilled at conveying creativity through images and videos? If so, Instagram and TikTok might be for you. Or perhaps you’re an In-Depth Educator? Do you prefer explaining your techniques and educating your audience in detail? If you enjoy creating comprehensive tutorials, YouTube might be your bag. Or are you a Swift Communicator who’s super engaging? If you’re a wiz at creating quick, attention-grabbing content that can captivate your audience within seconds then TikTok short-form videos might be your calling.

Things to think about Whichever platform you choose, you must consider the demographics and interests of your potential clients and followers. Are you looking for a younger, more trend-focused audience who might adore TikTok – or a more mature and professional audience that prefers YouTube? As well as your audience preferences, you also need to work out what you feel most comfortable with, because the key to any successful social media content is authenticity. Your audience can sense a fake demeanour or general discomfort, so there’s no point pushing yourself past the point of comfort. Choose a platform that aligns with your personality and values. Finally, think about the investment when it comes to time and potentially cash – especially if you opt for Youtube and need a new camera, tripod etc! To see more of Fergal’s social media content, you can find him on Instagram @fergaldoylehair!

YouTube allows hairstylists to create detailed video tutorials, diving deep into hairstyling, colouring, and other techniques. The platform is video-focused and enables hairstylists to demonstrate 29
