Press Up™ Body Building Styling Foam

Thick-Up Line™ Grooming Cream

This awesome shampoo does so much more than clean the hair—it actually starts styling in the shower! Powered by expertly engineered Uploader™ Technology, it creates lift, texture and control, without the ‘fluffiness’ we know guys hate about freshly washed hair. The Uploader™ Technology creates flexible bonds between the hair fibres, to provide control and texture for easier styling and style longevity.

Hairdressers often reach for a foam or mousse to create fuller looking styles, but these aren’t usually included in men’s ranges. That’s why we created Press Up™, and our experts know men with fine or longer length hair will embrace it. This unique styling foam helps to build body that lasts up to 24 hours. Providing texture, control and weightless hold, NEW Press Up™ Body Building Styling Foam makes even freshly washed hair easy to style.

For men wanting a moveable, flexible hold with a natural finish, Thick-Up Line™ Grooming Cream is a must-have. This versatile grooming cream is great for building body, creating texture and gaining control without the weight. It’s also the perfect choice for men with curly and wavy hair—working with their natural hair texture rather than against it. Expertly engineered with Uploader™ Technology to create flexible bonds between the hair fibres.

A WEEK in

my SHOES

ABOUT ROBERTA LOCATION: Alfreton, Derbyshire INSTAGRAM: @roberta_wilson_hairdressing YEARS IN THE BUSINESS: 32 years in hairdressing; 28 as a qualified hairdresser

The salon is closed today but this is my day to think ahead and plan for the week. First stop is always my local Capital Hair and Beauty store, where the lovely Cassie is on hand to talk me through what’s new. I am a self-confessed product queen; I love playing with new ones and I can’t wait for Indola’s ColourBlast range – so many party season potentials!

TUESDAY

One of the joys of being freelance is that I’m my own boss: this morning I was running a pop-up salon at a local department store to demonstrate the latest trends. The morning was full of lovely models, Prosecco for passers-by and great publicity for my new salon – all-in-all a success. I can’t wait to do it again soon.

WEDNESDAY

This is my late night at the salon and because I’m attached to a tanning shop, I often have some of their clients popping in to see what I’m up to. Today is all about quick trims and tidy-ups, as well as after-school cuts for the kids. As it’s a Wednesday, people are still thinking about work and this is reflected in the styles being asked for – nothing flash, just smart haircuts.

THURSDAY

The kettle has been on constantly as my regulars arrive and we chat about changing styles and fashions. For my younger clients it’s all about long, loose curls and glossy colour melts. However, back in the 1980s when I first started, the bubble perm was the request of the day. I think I’ve only been asked for three perms in the last six months!

FRIDAY

For my clients it’s nearly the weekend and everyone is after a big, bouncy blowdry for date-night. Indola’s Setting BlowDry Spray is excellent for speeding up the drying time while offering some protection from the heat. It also adds shine and light hold and is probably my ‘hero’ product at the moment.

SATURDAY

Colour day! I think I’ve got five booked in which is pretty standard for a Saturday - all balayage and babylights. I absolutely love seeing the finished results as the girls leave the salon so full of confidence and excitement for their Saturday night out. By the time I get home my legs are sore, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love my job, I love being freelance and I love my clients.

SUNDAY

I got engaged recently and the wedding is now my new, exciting project! Today is all about planning, researching and writing lists – and I couldn’t be happier.

ROBERTA’S ADVICE

“Being a freelance hairdresser is the best career you can possibly choose. Once you’ve got your skills and qualifications you can literally work anywhere and at any time – just remember to keep researching new looks and trends and don’t be afraid to ask others for help, especially as you’re likely to be working on your own. Experiment with new products on friends and family, sign-up to industry newsletters and emails, talk to your wholesaler and watch YouTube videos – inspiration comes from everywhere and as a freelancer you need to be a go-getter!”

Another concept that British women have finally taken onboard is using oil to cleanse their skin. Applying oil to your face does sound a little worrying, especially for those with oily or acne-prone skin, but, like attracts like, so using oil as your first cleanse means you are taking away the excess from your skin, therefore allowing your second cleanse to actually clean your skin.

• Spritzing on a face mist to ensure zero dryness post-cleanse

• Applying a serum – Hyaluronic Acid-based to pump up moisture retention, or Vitamin C-based, to give a glow

• Applying SPF – it’s finally been accepted that this is

a daily no-brainer, regardless of the country you live in, how dark your skin is, or the weather conditions

• Applying a refreshing stick balm – an influence from Korean beauty trends

• Applying a moisturiser • Applying a primer – often moisturising and either illuminating or mattifying

• Using foundation – we can choose anything from illuminating with zero oil, to moisturising and mattifying at the same time

• Carrying a face mist around to keep

makeup – or bare skin – feeling fresh Kaeso’s Elixir Beauty Oil is amazing at prepping skin ahead of makeup and makes a great overnight skin treatment too…

Gone are the days of slapping on your fave moisturiser in the morning and being done with it for the day. Today, depending on our skincare needs, moisturising can be as complicated as you like. Starting right after the morning cleanse, many of your clients are now:

Head to any social media platform over the weekend and you’ll see #selfcare and #selfcaresunday at the top of the trending hashtags list. In 2018, the phrase ‘self-care’ has replaced what we used to call ‘me-time’, but it has become intertwined with our mental state too. Taking time out, from just five minutes to a couple of hours, has become a huge trend, and has no doubt increased the revenue of tons of beauty brands. Instead of barely finding the time

There is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach to beauty, and the cleansing market in particular has exploded with offerings. While makeup wipes are taking a beating when it comes to how they are clogging up our environment, there are tons of safer options out there. Since arriving in stores around four years ago, Micellar Waters have finally found their footing, as more and more women understand what they actually do. Buying a bottle of what basically looks like tap water had so many of us confused, but we’re all getting the hang of the science bit, finally. (Micellar Water Cleansers contain tiny micelles, tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules, suspended in soft water). These cleansing waters – influenced by a Japanese approach of applying a cleansing water and leaving the moisture behind – meaning no need to wash off the remainder – take off makeup and leave skin soft and supple afterwards. However, many of us won’t stop there, and there is some doubt as to whether cleansing with a micellar water is enough. If anything, these waters

often form part of a double cleanse: where we use the first product to remove dirt and oil (often an oil-based product) before following with a gel-based cleanser (or cleansing water), to remove excess oil.

FOR ME, AND SO MANY OTHERS WITHIN THE HAIR INDUSTRY, SALLY BROOKS IS A NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH HARD WORK AND INCREDIBLE TALENT; IN FACT, SHE MIGHT WELL BE THE POSTER CHILD FOR THE TWO BEING INTERTWINED. IN AN INDUSTRY THAT’S OFTEN LITTERED WITH EGOS, YOU CANNOT HIDE A LACK OF TALENT, BUT EVEN IF YOU HAVE THE GIFT, YOU ALSO NEED TO PUT IN THE WORK. VIA HER SALON, BROOKS AND BROOKS – CO-OWNED WITH FORMER HUSBAND JAMIE BROOKS – SALLY HAS KEPT HER FINGER FIRMLY ON FASHION FORWARD, SOMETIMES FUTURISTIC TRENDS, ALL WHILE PROVIDING THE CLIENTS WALKING INTO THE SALON WITH HAIR THAT PUTS THEM IN A SERIOUSLY GOOD MOOD. TODAY SALLY’S ACCOLADES INCLUDE BEING THE CURRENT BRITISH HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR; READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW SHE GOT THERE. male hairdressers I admire do that either. I try to keep away from the subject as much as possible, as for me, what I respect is creativity and longevity [as opposed to] repeatedly putting yourself out there to be judged by your work and letting other people make opinions. People who continuously have to self-promote, be it female or male, don’t really interest me as much as the ones who quietly get the recognition they deserve from others.

C A PI TA L ICON

CK: What, if any, changes have you seen in the industry throughout your career? SB: The last few years have seen massive changes in the industry and social media is probably the biggest change. It allows everyone to have a platform and to promote their own thing – I think it has made women braver to show who they are and people now have a platform to speak. What I don’t like about it, is that it’s just content – it’s disposable – it’s fast and anyone can do it. Going to a show, touching an image and creating something timeless that stands the test of time will always be what I am about.” (When it comes to her own social media, Sally says she only uses Pinterest, for inspiration.)

C A PI TA L ICON

Think of all the great hairdressers: they never plaster their views or work over social media continuously looking for recognition – they don’t need to. They share their ideas for the craft of their industry, not for the accolade that follows.”

Shooting for awards is your own vision of your own work, that you art direct and are in control of. Winning it and the fact that you have done something to keep British hairdressing at the top of its game, is the icing on the cake. Whoever wins, it must be the right vision for the right time. Being nominated by my peers and getting to create my vision in photography is enough for me.”

CK: Do awards even matter to you? SB: “Awards are great for salon and team morale and for inspiration – I love the British Hairdressing Awards because it forces me to create a collection of images that capture where I am at this stage in my career – and working to a deadline for the entry really makes me do this! CK: What is the singularly most essential thing a salon that wants to achieve industry recognition must do?

CHARISSE KENION: It's a discussion that comes up more and more often today: do women have an issue with putting themselves forward for industry awards? I've heard some say, 'we're too busy getting on with the real work’ and ‘men have bigger egos', but I wanted to know what Sally thinks, as someone who has won the biggest prize, most recently.

/22

SALLY BROOKS: “I find it really frustrating to be a woman in the industry; a lot of emphasis on what I do is about ‘being a woman’ and for me, it has never been an issue. I don’t think women naturally put themselves forward or naturally self-promote themselves, but I don’t believe most of the

SB: “Passion. Put yourself out there to get the recognition; go to events, immerse yourself in the industry. Get off your phones and communicate and meet different hairdressers and have your own vision – don’t follow or copy. There are small awards that don’t cost much money to enter, there are platforms to put your team on. Throw your team in at the deep end and hopefully they will rise to the top.” CK: Let's go back; can you remember the first cut or colour you did, and how it turned out?

/23

CK: What was the day/moment when you thought; 'wow, this is why I do what I do’? SB: “I think it’s every day, as every day is different. One week I was planning a big show for L’Oréal Professionnel and I had one day off to finish the hair design. That same day a client of mine called to ask if I could go to the hospital and cut her hair as she has stage 4 cancer and can’t get out of bed or leave the hospital. What priorities do you have as a hairdresser? The show, the adulation and the ‘wow’ feeling, or your client? The relationship with a client and how I made her feel so much better, always comes first. That’s the reminder as to why I do this – that’s a wow feeling you can’t describe.” CK: What's been the most momentous event in your life, thus far, and why? SB: “Opening the salon as it was really scary and we had to make it work.”

SB: “I kind of lied my way into my job at Trevor Sorbie when I was 20 years old; I said I had been hairdressing for two years when I hadn’t even picked up a pair of scissors! I will always be extremely thankful to the poor girl I cut that bob on – I did the most amazing consultation about cutting it to her jaw. Little did I know that if you put the head right down and cut a straight line it ends up more at her eyes!”

CK: When it comes to creating a collection, are there are series of steps that you follow each time, or is it more of an organic process?

“…creating something timeless that stands the test of time will always be what I am about.”

Once this has been set I let everyone get on with their jobs - the lighting, clothes etc - while I focus on the models. This is really hard when shooting hair collections as a lot of agencies don’t allow you to use the girls you want and they don’t want certain girls in hair magazines, but I hold out and I try to find a girl who fits the mood. I don’t care if she is a new face and has never modelled before: it’s about an energy in my collections.”

CK: You inspire thousands, but what inspires you when it comes to the creative demands in your life - collections, shows etc. Where do you look? SB: “Photography is my biggest inspiration and speaking with creative people. The worst thing for me is if I have people around me who have plateaued; they become uninspiring to be around, yet pretend they are interested and that really annoys me. Passionate, creative people feed off each other and ignite a spark in one other.” /24

SB: “It’s organic – I create a photographic feeling. I design a mood board about my feeling that doesn’t include hair. It’s a blend of colour palettes and energy which I give to my photographer and the clothes stylist to mull over, so that they can bring their energy back to me.

CK: Tell me a little about your morning routine… SB: “I am not a morning person: I come to life after lunch and am most creative in the evening, so my morning routine usually happens with my eyes closed. I get dressed, get on the bus, put on my makeup, finish my hair at the salon, drink coffee and wake up.”

SB: “Always work with people better than you. Don’t look for instant fame. Be passionate about the craft and never lose it – if you see it slipping away, reignite it.” CK: What's been the most vital piece of advice you've ever been given, and who gave it to you?

C A PI TA L ICON

C A PI TA L ICON

CK: If you had one piece of advice to give a young hairdresser/colourist, what would it be?

SB: “My former boss Trevor Sorbie, will never understand how important he is, in who I am. He always gave me advice, but more than that, he showed me what the industry had to offer. He taught me how to be an artist and he trained my eye.” CK: You and Jamie met 26 years ago, and went from being married to divorced and continue working onstage together - how difficult was that transition? SB: “It was a really good transition as we generally are best friends and we run the business together. The key to this was that our new partners accepted the relationship, and they did. I am godmother to Jamie and Val’s child, and I am really honoured to be. I think having the salon helped the transition as we still spent time together, we just didn’t go home together. We still run the salon together: always have done and always will – I couldn’t do it without him!” Follow the team on Instagram @brookshair and Facebook and Twitter. /25

SO YOU’VE DECIDED TO GO

FREELANCE – WHAT ’S NE X T ?

CHOOSING TO GO FREEL ANCE COULD BE SEEN AS A SCARY MOVE, YET IT COULD AL SO BE ONE OF THE MOST FREEING DECISIONS YOU’LL EVER MAKE. HERE, THE DIREC TOR OF THE FREEL ANCE HAIRDRESSERS’ ASSOCIATION (FHA) SHEIL A ABR AHAMS, DISCUSSES WHAT LIFE MIGHT LOOK LIKE AS A FREEL ANCER. AND IF YOU WANT A FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT, MAKE SURE YOU READ ROBERTA’S STORY IN A WEEK IN MY SHOES, PG14. /37

GOING SOLO “Working on your own can be very isolating,” says Sheila. “We have a virtual staff room, where members speak to one another, offer support, share their experiences – even discuss colour problems! In fact, they discuss all the things that you would in a salon staff room. Working for yourself, training and keeping up to date is very important.” Even though you’re choosing to work alone, now is a great time to align yourself with hairdressers/ beauty techs that you admire; whether that’s reaching out locally, or simply following them on social media.

PROMOTE YOURSELF First, you should sign up for at least one form of social media (Instagram is ideal if you’re very visual, while Facebook is great for interacting with potential clients in your local area). Both are great for letting clients know your working hours, late nights etc. Next, have you taken a look at your website lately? If you want to be sure that someone who is looking for you, actually finds you, you must have a website – this is 2018 and having a website is a prerequisite when it comes to gaining a potential customer’s trust. BIG TIME FREELANCERS? Patrick Cameron, Carolyn Newman, Angelo Seminara, to name a few! ANY DO'S AND DON'TS FOR FREELANCERS? • DON'T isolate yourself. • DON'T undervalue yourself. • DON'T let clients think freelancing is a cheap option. • DON'T be afraid to admit that there are some things you need to learn.

/38

• DO charge realistic prices. • DO make sure you keep up to date with products and techniques.

• DO spend time with other freelancers. IS IT HARDER FOR A FREELANCER TO HAVE ACCESS TO EDUCATION, AS OPPOSED TO A SALON TEAM? Being freelance means you have to invest in your own education. But it’s often a lack of confidence that holds people back.

FINALLY, TELL US ABOUT THE POSITIVES OF BEING FREELANCE IN 2018? • You are in control of your own destiny. • You can take advantage of any opportunities that come your way. • You can work the hours that suit your life style. • You can focus on the work that pleases you. • Being your own boss can be the hardest thing you ever do but the most rewarding. Again, social media can be a huge boost for those working alone. Industry platforms and publications will often have community boards on their social media channels, particularly Facebook. Here you can join in with regular Q&As as well as share any concerns you might have.

HELP IS AT HAND Says Sheila: “I think an awful lot of freelancers feel like giving up sometimes, which is exactly why the FHA* was set up, so that you can be given help as you start your business.”

GARETH WEST HAIRDRESSING

WHAT'S GOING TO BE THE KEY CUT OF THE SEASON? “The ‘man fringe’ is this year’s version of the ‘man bun’ – a style that traditionally has feminine connotations, yet looks undeniably masculine and edgy when done correctly. On poker straight hair, a long, floppy, sharp fringe is a great way to add shape and volume; it’s a style that has the power to take a leap into high fashion territory. Fringes are the trend I’m most excited to see making the move from catwalk to street.” Sean J McElhill “The key cut of the season is definitely the Caesar cut. It’s the king of weighted, cropped shapes, featuring a clean fade with weighted disconnection through the sides. Heavy fringe with lots of texture through the top with volume – and more volume!” Vincent Quinn

@vincent_hardgrind at Hard Grind @hardgrind_

“Two looks that seem to be increasingly popular on Instagram right now are the high faded crops with a heavy blend and then longer textured contours. Worn with matte products, often used sparingly – less is more.” Tom Chapman,

FOR MEN?

BARBERS HAVE NEVER BEEN BUSIER – HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME FOR THE REST OF 2018, FROM FIVE OF THE BEST.

“There seems to be a shift away from the structured, deliberate styles – particularly the extreme fade – that have dominated in recent seasons. The new season brings with it an abundance of deconstructed styles that appear more effortless, with a more relaxed vibe. Dreadlocks are a perfect example: they crept up at numerous Fashion Week shows, picking up the momentum that they started to gather last season.” Sean J McElhill, Co-Director, SJ Forbes @seanmc1985 / @sjforbesegham “Men’s hair for AW will be longer on top and less neat and immaculate as it has been for a while now. Still short on the sides but messy on top.” Liam Hamilton, owner of Hamilton’s Elite Barbershop @hamiltonsbarbers and founder of Armour to Barber @armourtobarber “This season will see the return of longer styles – the sleek, straight lengths at Sartorial Monk and wind-swept styles at Dsquared2 during Milan Fashion Week AW18 are testament to this.” Tom O’Brien, Baroque Hair @baroqueharrogateripon

WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL PRODUCTS THAT EVERY BARBER NEEDS RIGHT NOW?

“A matte texturizing putty, to add texture, thickness and hold, without shine; a sea salt spray to create a lived-in, deconstructed wave in longer styles; and a wax to add texture to very short hair, while delivering strong hold to longer styles.” Sean J McElhill “Matte products are king at the minute. Dudes want more styled looks, so the need for more advanced products has never been greater, and a tub of wax just won't cut it anymore. Salt spray is a favourite, giving lots of texture and a matte effect while being super easy to use. Then there's powder: a little sprinkle on dry hair and BOOM! It gives tons of grip and texture whilst being weightless in the hair.” Vincent Quinn

BUDGET

– it’s best to decide on a definitive amount, or one that leaves room either way. That way you’ll limit any ‘surprises’!

INSPIRATION

– head to Pinterest to create a board of how you envision your salon to look. Think of colours, textures, and of course, your practical needs when it comes to the customer journey.

“Capital Hair and Beauty were a major part of the David Rae Team from the start. Together we designed and placed the right equipment and furnishings. We partnered to create a salon that is modern, friendly, and most importantly: bespoke.” David Rae, 2018 UK Revlon Professional Style Master Winner

LOGISTICS

– think about how much ‘down-time’ the salon might need and how you can communicate this to clients.

HOMEWORK

– when it comes to your builders and tradesmen, ask to see previous examples of their work or if they have been reviewed anywhere online.
