“Cameron’s hair is a look taken from our men’s Drift collection, which pays homage to our fundamental classic shapes. The Drift collection looks at different influences and how we tend to ‘drift’ through the subcultures throughout the ages. This look is a nod to ‘70s punks and ‘90s grunge kids, with a modern twist. We focused on movement and texture and accentuated both with this great colour work, consisting of bands of pastel blonde and oyster tones. At the sides, we worked with the model’s head shape and created a controlled undercut, with tight, faded lengths to support a dual layering technique through the top.

“For the colour, start with a classic balayage technique. Work through the head alternating horizontal and diagonal sections applying your pre-lightener nice and chunky to the edges of each section, and feather up through the mid band to blend. Once rinsed, towel dry and apply your pink gloss all over and leave to develop. For my pink gloss I used a pastel rose with a dash of berry violet. The cut is very simple; cut a blunt base line angling it slightly longer at the front.
Bed Head Headrush £9.75 / €11.85
For the styling, take horizontal sections from the nape up. With the first section, wrap the curl to the left, and the above section wrap to the right – keep alternating throughout the head. My top tip whilst wrapping the curl is to twist it as you curl, to create a bounce and stronger curl. Another tip is to make sure your thumb nail is always facing the tong! <
Pin each curl as you go and let it set for 15 minutes. Softly brush the hair out using a boar bristle brush with light hairspray spritzed on. Shape the front into finger waves and reset using single curl clips so as not to mark the hair and spray again with the light hairspray. Let this set for another 10-15 mins. Once reset, carefully take out the clips and lightly brush with a blusher brush to control flyaways."

A WEEK in
MONDAY
I live in Essex and commute to the salon in Mayfair five days a week. The salon is closed today but I still have lots of work to do; I’m a L’Oréal ID artist and I’ll be teaching at the academy in Hammersmith later on this week. I spend the morning gathering inspiration and ideas from various international fashion week shows. Then in the afternoon I’ll head into London to meet up with fellow ID artists to plan and prepare what we’ll be teaching.
my SHOES
TUESDAY
My main role at the salon is Senior Stylist, but recently I’ve taken over managing the social media too. I have an early morning meeting with Joanna Hansford, Managing Director of Jo Hansford, to organise our plans going forward. In between clients, I style the hair of a lovely lady who will be doing some PR for us with the Mandarin Oriental as the Jo Hansford range is now available in all the rooms and suites at the hotel. After my work is over I spend the evening teaching some presentation skills to the juniors, ready for their soirée.
WE’RE KICKING OFF 2018 WITH A PEEK INTO THE LIFE OF FR ANKIE MOODY; SENIOR HAIR ST YLIST AT JO HANSFORD, L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL ID ARTIST AND CREATIVE HEAD’S RISING STAR OF 2017.

THURSDAY
It’s an early start today as I’m on my way to the L’Oréal academy in Hammersmith. We teach some students from Japan lots of session styling tips and techniques. After quickly packing up the equipment and products, I head back to the salon to work on some clients. One thing I’ve learned is how important it is to keep clients happy and organise your days as far in advance as possible!
FRIDAY
Today I spent some time in and around Mayfair taking photos and gathering content to use for our social media. It’s a beautiful area to work in and we have clients coming to see us from all over the world.
FRANKIE’S ADVICE
The hairdressing industry is fiercely competitive, so grab every opportunity you are given. Always make sure you are 100 percent happy with the work you are producing. Never think that you know it all: there is so much to learn as the industry evolves. Lastly, a smile goes a long way!
C A PI TA L C A RE E R S
Tying in with our Christmas PR, we will be offering three party hair-up styles. I spend the morning creating these and taking photos to promote the looks in the salon. It’s another busy day with clients before getting the juniors ready for their soirée. This year I was chosen to judge the event, alongside three other colleagues. I think it’s so important to support the assistants and give them a chance to show us how much they have learnt.
LOCATION: Jo Hansford, Mayfair, London
SATURDAY
My first client was a bride at Claridges Hotel. It’s always an honour to look after people on their special day! We had previously done a trial in the salon, so I was very prepared and it was so exciting getting her and her bridesmaids ready.

SUNDAY
/14
For me, it’s vital to be organised ahead of schedule. So, even though it’s Sunday, I spend part of my day prepping all of our social media posts for the next couple of weeks. This saves me having to rush around each day thinking about what to post. Now I can relax! /15

FROM STAFF RETENTION TO THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, HERE’S WHAT THE EXPERTS THINK SHOULD BE YOUR MAIN PRIORIT Y FOR THE REST OF 2018.
/17
IS MY BUSINESS DELIVERING ON MY EXPECTATIONS? “It will in 2018! There is no point running a business if it doesn't deliver for the owner because they are the ones who have set it up and invested their money in order to maintain/enhance their lifestyle. An annual business MOT is absolutely essential. I usually recommend that business owners take some time in October of each year to sit down in a quiet place, relax and identify what exactly do they want from their business the following year. Is it more revenue? More time off for travel? Do they want to work less hours to spend more time with the family? It could be anything. Once they know what it is they want, they need to quantify it in terms of revenue generation to get them there. Then it’s about working backwards to see just how much each productive person will need to generate and how much retail and tools they will have to make it happen. Without a solid plan a salon is a rudderless ship.”
IS MY BUSINESS HELPING MY STAFF TO MEET THEIR PERSONAL GOALS?
Here Perry Patraszewski, Director at London’s boutique hairdressers Blue Tit, shares his top three business goals for a successful 2018.
“A very important move for a leader. If your staff's needs are being met in your business it automatically ensures loyalty and commitment from them. If a business stands in the way of a staff member's requirements, aspirations or ambitions, then they begin to look elsewhere to have their needs met. You risk losing not just a team member but also all the investment you have put into them, such as training, customer relations etc. A conversation with each of them will tell you what each person is working towards in their life and help you establish how you can accommodate their wishes. Explain to them that as long as both their needs and the salon's needs are met and standards are maintained for total customer satisfaction, everybody wins. A flexible salon manager develops a flexible and accommodating crew.”
#1
We want to have a stronger presence in West and Central London. We opened our first salon in Dalston in 2011, and we now have eight salons based within on-trend locations around East and South London. London is the home of creativity, and our aim is to bring more Blue Tit salons to the capital. To open the door to success for at least 30 new stylists. Each time we open a new salon, we are able to employ young hairdressers from the local talent pool. Being a part of the Blue Tit team opens the door to first-class education and opportunities. We will also be looking to make three new partnerships with our best members of staff.
#3
Next up, Jennifer Linton, Co-Director at Aberdeen’s forward-thinking and award-winning salon Linton & Mac, says happiness is the key to success.
To continue our focus on education. Our training at our Clapton Academy creates a career ladder for in-salon promotion, and we have seen key members of staff thrive in a very short space of time, taking the helm at our Brixton and Crouch Hill locations as partners in the Blue Tit evolution.
“Our staff retention rate is at an all-time high, and we put that down to their happiness. Our priority is our team and we treat everyone like family. At the beginning of the year, we sit down with each member of our team to discuss his or her aspirations for the year ahead. It’s important to help them set goals so that they can achieve their ambitions, and it also shows that you care about what is important to them. Whether it’s education, a promotion, or wanting more responsibility, we do everything we can to help them achieve their goals.

EDUCATION
“When it comes to education, you have to speculate to accumulate and it’s an investment that, when executed correctly, can pay huge dividends in business. As Nelson Mandela once said: “education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world”, and in the world of hairdressing, training is imperative to keep it revolving, as well as evolving.”

“Hire the right people; it’s important to surround yourselves with the right people, who share your passion and beliefs and who have an enthusiasm for the craft. Energy and enthusiasm go a long way in driving any business, but forward planning, flexibility and adaptability are also key to make sure things run smoothly.”
“As a business owner, on any given day you can be dealing with people with a variety interests, wants and needs. This can be challenging, but it’s important to stay motivated by your mission of creating a unique workspace that keeps your team pushing to achieve even more than before. To allow this to happen, I believe it’s important to motivate individuals rather than teams, working from the top level, so managers and/or franchisees can in turn motivate their teams to achieve and succeed, allowing standards to be upheld within all levels of your business. These relationships need to be continually nurtured; at Westrow our philosophy on motivation begins with recruiting the right people in the right roles from the very beginning – only those who share the same mindset will allow you to create something great.” www.westrowhair.com

“It doesn’t matter how qualified or experienced you are, there is always the opportunity to be better. In order to offer an unparalleled service to my clients, I am always building upon my own knowledge. I’ve completed a three-year Trichology programme, as well as a diploma in Nutrition and Weight Loss which means I’m qualified to offer a complete package of services when it comes to scalp and hair loss issues. I’m a huge believer in learning and being the best I can be. If I meet a client suffering from a condition I’m not familiar with, I make it my mission to find out all I can on the subject. Knowledge is power and so important to a successful business. Books are also a great way of staying informed – I always have four or five on rotation. Currently, I’m into books on nutrition and I love reading biographies of entrepreneurs that I admire – they’re so motivational.”

NEVER STOP LEARNING
EXTEND YOUR SERVICES
“It’s all too easy to get stuck in a rut – if it ain’t broke, why fix it? But adding new services to an established business can broaden your appeal and attract new clients. As the hair loss side of my business is so busy, I’ve spent the last two years researching, testing and planning a Wellness programme aimed at maintaining optimum health. I’m launching a range of food supplements with multiple benefits and also writing a book on the subject. When it comes to the salon; discounts and perks are always a great incentive to attract new clients – and if they receive an unbeatable service, they’ll keep coming back. With this in mind, we work with a large number of corporates within our local area and offer staff a discount – over 400 employees from one particular company are now Simone Thomas clients, which is pretty amazing! Social media is a great tool for reaching new clients too; we have clients who travel from America and Europe for our hair loss services. We also have a Live Chat function on our website that allows us to talk to potential new clients in different time zones, even when the salon is closed. It makes perfect sense.” www.simonethomas.com /21
DOES IT HURT?

worrying about makeup sweating off. CONFIDENCE – not only does Microblading mean perfect makeup for those with unsteady hands or failing eyesight, it can be a massive confidence-booster for those going through chemotherapy or suffering with alopecia.
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area before and during the procedure. Each person is different; some feel a slight stinging or prickling sensation, some feel nothing at all, others feel pain and yet others have fallen asleep during the procedure. It is important that the client is as comfortable as possible, so the anaesthetic cream can be reapplied as necessary.
WHAT COULD IT MEAN FOR A BEAUTY THERAPIST’S EARNINGS? Depending on the area or city you’re based in, on average, I would say around £295, which includes the four to six-week top-up. The client will also need a colour boost to keep it fresh, approximately 12 months after the first procedure. A therapist could charge around £100-£150 within 12 months and £150-£200 within 18 months.
We’re so excited to be able to offer you this fantastic 3-day Microblading course.

MICROBL ADING IS A BROW-ENHANCING TREND THAT’S HERE TO STAY; HERE MICHELE HARDING-MAHER, OUR MICROBL ADING COURSE TUTOR, ANSWERS SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS ON THIS PROFITABLE SALON SERVICE. /22
WHAT IS MICROBLADING?
Micropigmentation, also known as 'facial micro-pigmentation' and 'eyebrow embroidery', is a process where medical grade pigments are inserted into the dermal [top] layers of the skin. Unlike tattooing, which uses ink and is inserted much deeper into the skin – making it permanent – this pigment gradually fades over time.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The pigment is gently applied to the upper layer of the skin using a blade that has been broken down into a number of super fine needles. To soften the sensation, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied so the client will be as comfortable as possible. The process takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Immediately after the treatment, the client should expect the area to be 30-50 percent darker than the colour originally chosen. This is absolutely normal and the colour will lighten within the first three to four days post-treatment, as the skin heals.
UNSPLASH.COM
M I C R O
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN This course is designed to cater to pro’s and beginners, and by the end of the three days you will be qualified, confident and fully versed in the practice of embroidery microblading, an ancient technique that originated in Asia.
The client will then need a follow-up appointment, which is included in the price, between four to six weeks after the initial treatment. This visit will refine and perfect the finished look of the procedure, as some areas of the skin do not hold the pigment as well as others. We also recommend a 'colour boost' approximately 12 months after the initial procedure, to keep the appearance fresh.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICROBLADING?
The benefits are endless! TIME-SAVING – ideal for working mums who need to get up early, running after their kids and left with no time for themselves. COST-EFFECTIVE – with eyebrows being the 'must-have' accessory, the average cost for HD brows is £30 every four to six weeks. LIFESTYLE – ideal for those who workout, swim, play sports, have oily skin or are prone to hot flushes, Microblading means no more
COURSE OVERVIEW Pre-course study to be completed at home. Day 1 consists of theory and demonstration. Day 2 consists of practical work. Post-course you will need to carry out five complete microblading treatment case studies from home. Assessment day – you will present a
portfolio of your case study evidence, before completing a live microblading service on your model. COST £1,650+VAT WHAT YOU’LL NEED Two models* for day 2 of practical work, plus one for the assessment day. Leah Durrant of Hair Salon & Beauty Re:Treat says Microblading is a trend that’s here to stay! “We offer Microblading and it’s fast becoming one of the most popular treatments, so we’re delighted to be so on-trend! Microblading is a form of tattooing, however, unlike a regular tattoo, pigment is implanted under the skin with a handheld tool instead of a machine. This handheld tool is used to draw hair-like strokes and mimic the natural hairs in the clients’ brows, creating the eyebrow shape the client has always dreamt of, whilst still looking natural. Microblading is a fantastic service for salons to offer; as well as it being so on-trend at the moment, it’s a great service to complement your existing eyebrow services like waxing, threading and HD brows. It’s also a service that not many salons are offering yet so it’s great to have. It sets you apart from your competitors and shows you’re one step ahead in the industry.” /23
LAST Y EA R’S BLOR A NGE? A blend of blonde and orange, this is the trend that was seen on celebs as well as on the street, but what’s the 2018 interpretation?
2017 WAS THE YEAR OF UNICORN HAIR, BLOR ANGE MADE A COMEBACK AND DENIM WAS A MASSIVE HIT, IN EVERY TONE IMAGINABLE. SO, WHAT’S NEX T? MEET PEACHES AND CREAM, PASTEL AGE, PEACOCK – AND MORE! /24
#GEN-Z YELLOW
Move over millennial pink; there’s a new colour trend in town! While millennial pink ranged from beige with a touch of blush, to a vibrant peachy-salmon hybrid, we’re now welcoming an influx of yellow, which is proving to be a welcome palette cleanser. Jeremy Scott’s SS18 show was heavy on the yellow hues and we predict an influx of requests for this sunshine shade. We’ll be leaving the juicy vibrant yellow hair trend of 2017 behind though: the SS18 yellow is much more mellow. Sarah Black, Colour Specialist, Linton & Mac
#GOLD
This season it’s all about precious metals. Bright, gold blondes are my favourite and a definite hit with clients, due to their ability to illuminate hair from within. For 2018 one palette I predict is yellows and pinks. These colours will be used to create varying hues of peach and apricot, with a third colour of white to create a complementary trio. To transition the trend away from the all-over effect of blorange, the peaches and cream trend involves techniques such as marbling, which utilises freestyle placement of colour, as well as swirling and squiggling random patterns for a fusion of soft colours that are unique and bespoke every time. Blorange was huge in 2017 and for 2018 the trend remains popular but is moodier and cooler. The smoked peaches and cream trend features a smoky root blended into blonde and tangerine tones. This look is great for those who want to add some bright colour to their hair but don’t want to deal with the upkeep of roots. This look is particularly great for the summer months, as it looks just like a sunset! Karen Brown, Hair by JFK /25

that encourage the colour to stay icy-white should be used regularly. However the real key to maintaining a platinum blonde look is with products that nourish the hair and scalp. A regular hair mask or in-salon deep conditioning treatment, as well as regular trims and heat-protective styling products, are essential. Sarah Black, Colour Specialist, Linton & Mac
#PAT TERNS
#PASTEL AGE
Pastelage is one of 2018’s hottest new hair trends, taking over from the incredibly popular balayage and unicorn hair trends. Pastelage, like balayage, is created using a free-hand technique, usually to add lightness to the hair and give it that sun-kissed effect. Pastelage is applied in the same way, however, instead of using natural hair colours, pastel tones are applied to the hair. This new colour trend is perfect for clients who want to add some brighter shades to their hair without the commitment of dying their hair one bright shade, as, like balayage, pastelage will fade and grow out over time. It’s also important that when clients opt for pastelage, they consult their hairdresser about their skin tone and facial features in order to find the perfect shade for them. Dylan Brittain, Rainbow Room International /26
#PL ATINUM
We saw icy shades of white, platinum and pearly grey emerging at last season’s shows, and now it seems the trend for ice queen shades is really taking hold, with models at the Versus SS18 show showcasing platinum locks and celebrities using the Fashion Week ‘frow’ as an opportunity to show off their own nod to the trend (most notably, Kim Kardashian).

White blonde is notoriously difficult to achieve, maintain and keep in good condition, and ensuring that clients understand this, before adopting the look, is paramount. We always strive to achieve the most flattering tone of platinum at Linton & Mac, taking into account a client’s skintone: remember not all shades of platinum are equal. Perhaps the most widely interpreted trend of 2017, denim blue gave us an array of tones, from icy, bleached blues to deep, dark indigos. So, what’s next?
#PEACOCK
The trend for the blue hues will still be strong but it will have evolved to incorporate the 2017 Pantone colour of the year – Greenery. Expect to see lots of intense and vibrant blue and green variants combined with each other and fused together to create rich aquamarines, turquoise and cyan shades. For an added twist, complementary shades of purple will make an appearance, weaving in and out of the blues as perfect transitional tones. Robert Eaton, Creative Director, Russell Eaton salons

Street Style Looks As easy as 1, 2, 3
With Sam McKnight showcasing petrol blue shades at the Fendi SS18 show on models like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, it’s sure to be a bang-on trend for 2018. Blue hues have been popular for a while but the use of bright blue on the Fendi catwalk saw a new take on the trend. Oil slick-inspired shades were toned with an almost green edge, and Crazy Color shades Peacock, Sky Blue and Capri Blue can all be used to recreate the look. #SMUDGING
#PETROLEUM BLUE While last season was all about mermaid shades, this season’s colour has toughened up. The azure shades that we saw last year are back, but have taken on an inkier, grittier hue for spring. Backstage at the Fendi show, Sam McKnight gave the Hadid sisters and Kendall Jenner the show’s signature style: ‘petrol bangs.’ Chunky side fringes were tinted petrol blue and forest green, in an almost futuristic style reference that brought a touch of masculinity to the show. The mossy green shade is actually very similar to my winning colour at this year’s L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award. While it isn’t the most wearable of shades for everyday, I predict that these attention-grabbing inky colours will come into their own at next summer’s festivals. – SMART 3 Steps to achieve any look in three simple steps.
With balayage and ombré styles remaining popular throughout 2017, clients have become accustomed to softer colour. Often they like the option of allowing their natural colour to grow in-between appointments without that harsh root effect. Smudging allows us to achieve that flawless blend of colour when working a darker root into lighter ends. Once the hair has been highlighted, applying a toner or gloss to the roots using a brush to blend the line between the root and the colour will create that stunning ‘smudged’ effect. This tends to work best for those who want to go a shade or two lighter and will be popular with your clients in 2018. Andrew Collinge

“At the SS18 shows, model of the moment Kaia Gerber (daughter of the original brunette supermodel, Cindy Crawford) was proof of how far we can push a brunette, all while keeping it natural-looking. My favourite tone of brunette is the beautiful, warm bronze colour that Kaia rocked at the Isabel Marant show; it was a rich and coppery brown that appeared to have been painted with a freehand technique, and reflected the light beautifully. It’s the perfect antidote to all the shades of blonde we see so much of throughout spring and especially summer. The beauty of bronze is that it looks so natural, yet is really striking, and it can really lift certain skin tones and complexions. Medium and darker complexions with pink undertones can pull off a lighter shade of bronze, however yellow skintones – especially those with very dark eyes – run the risk of appearing more sallow next to lighter bronze tones, and would benefit from sticking to a darker, more ruddy version. When colouring the hair bronze I would stick to using a Foilyage technique – similar to Balayage – but using foils, which should give just enough subtle colour placement to brighten and warm up brunette locks.”

“To be honest, I don’t think braids ever go away! We’ve seen so many wet look braids but for many of our clients, it’s not necessarily a look they want to recreate. Instead we’re going for tiny, subtle braids that are super cool and understated, and easy to blend in with the natural hair. To secure the plait once you've created it run through the section with a straightening iron and spritz it with a firm hold hairspray. For anyone who doesn’t have long hair to get the look – cheat! Disguise a hair weft into the hair and create a really low plait. This season, plaits are all about being a bit messy and rough-looking. Tease the plait with a bristle backcombing brush and finish with dry shampoo for a matte finish.” Michelle Paterson, Hair Manager at Pouts & Pinups

Braids have long been a go-to for women with Afro and mixed texture hair, but the trend has gone mainstream and it’s here to stay!
“Box braids are back! While many of our clients are still opting for French and Dutch braided styles, we are getting more requests for a edgier box braid look. These braids are so simple to create and can be worn natural, or you can incorporate strands of colour, leather, and other textiles to really make them pop. This year is all about stepping into the future; think Mad Max and Generation X.” Sarah Black, Principal Stylist, Linton & Mac /33

Whether your client is going to a formal event or a festival, plaits suit every occasion whether soft and romantic or practical and tight. Work with your client’s hair to achieve the best braid, don’t necessarily go with what’s ‘on-trend’. A block colour works best on this trend and the hair ideally should be all one length for maximum impact. This particular trend could work well for clients with fine hair as it will create the illusion of thicker locks. Always advise clients to use heat protection when styling the ‘super straight’ look, as it's a trend that needs to look glossy and expensive, so hair must be in its best condition - regular trims are also essential. Always finish this style with a gloss serum or shine spray to create mirror-like shine. Stephanie Gamble at Ashley Gamble /35

Poker straight styles come and go, but they’re 100 percent back for 2018. “Super straight, sleek hair is a very on-trend hairstyle at the moment, and has been all over the catwalks. Super straight hair is particularly great for clients who want their face to appear more elongated, as the less volume they have at the sides of the face, the slimmer their face will appear. The key to this look is ensuring the hair is glowing with health and shine, so I always recommend a client has a conditioning treatment in the salon prior to creating the look. A cut is also beneficial to ensure it’s in its best condition, looking and feeling soft, smooth and shiny. When creating this look, it’s best to blowdry the hair straight first, using a round brush and then use straighteners to achieve that super sleek look. I always recommend using a heat defence spray prior to blowdrying the hair for protection, and I like to finish the look with a mist of shine spray, for mirror-like shine.”Neil Barton, Neil Barton Hairdressing

“Super straight hair returned to the runway with designers like Victoria Beckham, Versace and Oscar de la Renta all opting to give the models impossibly glossy, poker straight hair. The beauty of straight hair is that it can look healthy, silky and extremely polished – if it’s done right.” Jennifer Linton, Co-Director, Linton & Mac
“The key to super straight hair is making sure that it’s flattering on the client. Often super straight hair can look quite severe, so we need to find ways to soften it, or add extra dimension. If a client is set on this style, I would try pairing it with a fringe. Whether it’s a real one or a clip-in, there are so many options, from voluminous fringes to micro bangs, and all can be adapted to suit both the clients’ features and style. If a fringe is not a popular choice, I’d recommend opting for some subtle layering and shaping around the face.” Robert Eaton, Creative Director Russell Eaton salons, Leeds & Barnsley /37

“Textured hair is bang-on trend and is sure to be a style that clients will continue to ask for throughout 2018. They key to creating any textured style is to make sure the hair isn’t too smooth and clean. For a client wanting this look to be created in the salon, you just need to wash the hair, but be sure to use a volumising shampoo and lightweight conditioner. Once the hair is dry I would add some dry shampoo to give the hair grip and volume before styling. Adapting catwalkinspired textured looks is quite easy; it’s all about taking inspiration from the catwalk and toning the look down for a wearable version your client will love.” Dean Jones, Dean Jones Hairdressing
“Texture works particularly well in a long lob, as it gives effortless volume, but it also looks great when you add a dose of messy texture to a short crop. Offer your clients a natural finish rather than the perfect blowdry to give them a more modern look." Stephanie Gamble at Ashley Gamble
