NEXT LEVEL BEAUTY
The amount of research and experimentation that goes into the skincare that we use on our bodies and faces utilises the ultimate in technology, science and nature. Now OPI introduces the first salon line to borrow from that premium approach, with Pro Spa. Working with leading dermatologist, Dr Zena Gabriel, OPI has developed a range that features a blend of Cupuaçu butter and white tea extract to improve the appearance of hands and feet, which is often where we see the first signs of aging – as well as on our face. Add to this its gorgeous citrus scent and this line will only add to the mani/pedi experience, and no doubt boost your business. From £5.35 / €6.70

MINERAL SHADOWS
Metallic shades have been massive over the winter months, and they're set to become even bigger for summer! FarmaVita's new Mineral Shadows collection more than does the job in meeting the demands of this shimmering trend, with a range of 12 colours inspired by stones and metals. From ice cream pinks to cool grey/blues, this is the perfect range for recreating serious shine and colour pay-off.
NEW TREATS FROM GELLUX!
Getting your clients’ nails summer-ready just got a whole lot easier, as Gellux launches three new treatments to conquer any and every issue. First up, there’s Reconstruct Base Coat. Designed to plump and add structure to the natural nail this base helps to fill ridges and imperfections and offers superior hold and great adhesion to gel colour. Next there’s Recovery+ Base Coat, an LED/UV gel base coat that repairs, strengthens and protects with Vitamins E, B5 and Calcium. Finally, there’s the Matte/Base Top Coat, which is a key trend for summer. As well as transforming gel polishes, this can also be used on its own without colour to perfect the natural nail without looking ‘polished’, which makes it a great option for men who want neater nails. All three treatments offer a 15-day hold. £11.95/€15 each

Start by prepping the hair with a leave-in conditioner that’s light and weightless, before cutting and styling. To style the hair, I blowdried it until it was 80 percent dry, and then I used a diffuser to give it an undone, natural feel. I spritzed texturising spray onto the hair and then, whilst drying I scrunched the hair with my hands to give it that natural, wavy, textured look.

< IQ Intelligent haircare sea salt spray 250ml £4.49/€5.65

< Goldwell StyleSign Ultra Volume Naturally Full 200ml £7.40 /12
Parlux 385 Powerlight Ceramic Ionic Dryer £84.95/€99.95
The styling of this look was created to show the different colours throughout the hair, which includes a variety of purple tones along with blonde and brunette shades. Pastels are so on-trend and of course, are best to be done in the salon by a hairdresser. However, you can show your clients how to recreate the look by using a coloured mousse too.

YEARS IN THE BUSINESS: 6 years TWITTER: @karenlouisenail INSTAGRAM: @karenlouisenail
TUESDAY MONDAY It’s an 8am start at Big Sky Studios for a shoot with a haircare range. The brand’s incredibly colourful so I was really excited to get creative with nail designs for this one – and I got to work with one of my favourite models! She has amazing natural nails and that always helps when you’re on a shoot. The shoot runs over so I'm there until about 8pm but we do get to order pizza to the studio. Pizza always makes everything better!
I helped assist with the launch of Salon System’s brand new PRO-Polish by GELLUX collection. The idea was to offer desk-side nail appointments to the press, using the new range. It’s the brand’s first ever long-wear polish so the press were excited about the news. We travelled to all corners of London for appointments at the major publication houses. The new collection is called Picture Perfect, so to tie in with the film theme, we also had some fun with a Polaroid camera, snapping pictures of the finished look! It’s a busy but relaxed day!
WEDNESDAY Another busy day with the Salon System team; this time we’re filming a SS17 nail step-by-step using the new PRO-Polish collection. I created a sports luxe style using the Picture Perfect collection in Freeze Frame and Camera Ready. There is a real emphasis on simple designs and lines for Spring/Summer. Once I get home I need to start organising my team for LFW and start prepping the nails for the Henry Holland show. Being a freelance means you don’t always have a cut-off time!
KAREN-LOUISE’S ADVICE
THURSDAY I have a 9am call time for Vivienne Westwood’s Anglomania campaign. I’ve been working on this for about two or three years now, so I feel like I’m part of the furniture. It’s always a fun day and I always look forward to seeing her fabulous creations. The nail looks tend to be very clean. I’m finished by lunch-time and then rush off to a Notting Hill meeting for a large project I am working on with my favourite hair stylist, Lara Zee. Lara and I have been working with each other a lot since the 2012 London Olympics (where I did the nails for the athletes). When I get home I continue to source nail techs around the UK for a Nail Bar Tour with Lucozade.
SATURDAY FRIDAY This morning I’m arranging staff for my LFW and Nail Bar Tour events. Not for long though, as I need to head off to Trinity Hospice for a ‘My Makeover’ event. A friend, the makeup artist Lee Pycroft, curated the event and the idea is to give manicures, makeovers and beauty tips to patients at the hospice. It touches my heart seeing their faces light up once they’ve spent the afternoon with us. Then it’s home time and I spend some time working on some step-by-step nail art tutorials for Salon System. I chose a look using Freeze Frame. I’m totally obsessed with this gorgeous blue shade!
I spend the first part of the morning confirming nail techs to work with me for LFW and my nail bar tour and finishing off some last pieces of admin before I finally stop to have lunch and enjoy the rest of the weekend.
LOVE KAREN-LOUISE’S WORK? TURN OVER TO SEE ONE OF HER GORGEOUS CREATIONS AND RECREATE IT USING THE NEW PRO-POLISH PICTURE PERFECT COLLECTION!

Always keep up to date with training as you can never learn too much. Be prepared for longer hours than expected and be really flexible when you are on jobs as they can often run over. Also, always keep active on social media - it’s a good platform for clients to see your work and your personality. Session work is hard but it can also be great fun. OK AY, WE KNOW SUMMER ISN’T TECHNICALLY HERE, BUT IT’S HIGHLY LIKELY THAT YOUR CLIENTS’ MINDS ARE FOCUSED ON PL ANNING THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAYS RIGHT NOW. WHETHER THEY’RE OFF SOMEWHERE EXOTIC, OR PL ANNING A STAYCATION, THE SUMMER MONTHS CAN BE BRUTAL ON THE HAIR. HERE WE TALK TO THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS ABOUT THE PRODUC TS AND ST YLES TO GO FOR WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING YOUR CLIENTS’ HAIR LOOKING AND FEELING SERIOUSLY GOOD! /20
SEED
“For summer, warm shades like golden blonde and butterscotch – shades that make the skin glow – will be popular. Chocolate hues will also be big; this includes everything from dark chocolate to espresso shades, which bring shine and gloss to limp, lifeless hair.
ALAIN PEREQUE
COLOURS OF SUMMER
For clients who can’t decide between blonde or brown, bronde is the perfect solution, plus it’s a great alternative to the balayage technique if your client wants to stay on the more natural side. Auburn, copper and red shades will also be popular; they’re such beautiful colours that can light up any complexion. For darker skin, opt for a darker red shade; for lighter skin, try a rose gold or strawberry blonde shade. Medium skin tones suit copper and auburn shades.” Karen Thomson, owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa
ZOOLOGY
C A PI TA L T RE NDS
“With tamer palettes you can expect to see warm blondes and cool brunettes. Darks are getting darker, choosing shades closer to black for extra depth and intense shine. Undertones of cool auburn and matte chestnuts will also feature. Blondes are becoming brighter with peekaboo strands of extreme lightness framing the face and overall tones of honey, caramel and rose golds making an appearance.
BLUE TIT
Key fashion shades are still very much pastel tones, with white being the new grey and blorange being the new pink. Imagine cutting open a blood orange then making a pastel version of it – that’s what we’re talking about!” Sam James-Cockayne, Evy Professional Creative Director
ALAIN PEREQUE
Technique-wise, we’re taking it next level with numerous colours being blended into each other throughout the length of the hair. The trick is to keep a harmonious colour palette so there is hardly any contrast and you can’t see where colours stop and start. The darker root won’t be quite as contrasting this season and an overall seamless result will be in demand.

“Shine spray will keep the hair (especially blondes) looking light-reflective and polished. Heat protection is a must at this time of year, particularly when using thermal styling tools. Blondes also need to invest in blonde shampoo to avoid brassiness.

C A PI TA L T RE NDS
“In the summer hair can get very dry due to sun damage, so it’s really important to keep the hair full of moisture. L’Oréal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil Nourishing Masque is a great deep conditioning mask that keeps hair glossy and strong as it is infused with Argan Oil and Myrrh. I’d definitely recommend clients to use a mask a couple of times a week to keep hair replenished and looking healthy. I’d also recommend that they refrain from using heated styling tools to stop hair from becoming even more damaged. If they have to be used, then always use a heat protector.”Tina Farey, Editorial Director at RUSH Hair
SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL
SUN PROTECTION
“There are so many trends right now that work perfectly for holidays. Braids are obviously a great option for staying (and looking) cool by the pool – I’d advise clients to apply an SPF hair and scalp product to damp hair before plaiting, paying particular attention to any skin exposed at the scalp. Then, they can simply let them unravel for beachy waves come sundown. Alternatively, the wet-look trend works really well. Clients can slick their hair back from the face with a high shine styling cream, using grips to hold in place behind the ears. In terms of products, many haircare ranges offer post-sun shampoos designed to shift chlorine and salt water deposits and rehydrate after sun exposure. These will help maintain the condition of the hair throughout the holiday, as will an intensive mask; clients should use the latter after washing hair for a moisture hit, or slather on for protection during the day – the sun’s rays will intensify the hydrating effect.” Alan Simpson, Artistic Director at Contemporary Hairdressing
“Using the correct products is essential in dealing with humidity! If we were dealing with a bride who was trying to avoid frizz on her wedding day, we would recommend an updo, as there are no guarantees that she won’t suffer from frizz on a day with damp weather!” Tori Taylor, Creative Director at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence
SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL RUSH HAIR
“If all else fails, the simple, on-trend topknot is a holiday essential. Show your client how to apply Schwarzkopf Professional’s Tame Wild moisturising milk to the hair and sweep it into a high ponytail, secured with a band. Then twist the pony into a loose knot and pin securely. A simple, elegant look that’s so easy to achieve. The amazing Tame Wild will keep their hair controllable, shiny and most importantly, keep the humidity well and truly locked out!” Will Eagles, Cream
C A PI TA L T RE NDS
HUMIDITY BEGONE!
“Crown braids are not only gorgeous, they’re practical for a day at the beach or by the pool, as hair is pulled away from the face. To recreate the crown braid, or scalp braid, with plenty of volume, prep hair with mousse before rough-drying. To encourage maximum volume, re-apply the mousse once hair is dry. Create a scalp braid that follows the top section of the crown, pulling hairs away from the face. The ends of hair can then either be tied up, into a topknot, pulled back into a chic pony, or can be left loose.” Hayley Gibson-Forbes, SJ Forbes
HOOKER & YOUNG FOR BLONDME
“Schwarzkopf Professional’s BC Sun Protect range is the perfect holiday companion to keep hair tangle-free and hydrated and also gives triple sun protection, which helps reduce colour fading. For poolside styling, I advise clients to opt for a loose side chignon rather than the usual top knot. Chignons are super simple and look so lovely. For the evening, I think the gelled back, wet look style looks amazing with an evening outfit. Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Damped is the perfect product for creating this look or alternatively, use a texture spray such as OSiS+ Refresh Dust to create matte, beach curls.” Marcus King, Hooker & Young
“I think the best look for the evening is a braid as it’s incredibly low maintenance. Use a pump of OSiS+ Grip mousse throughout the hair to hold the style and go for a classic dutch braid, a halo braid, a braided bun – the choice is yours! Alternatively, my personal favourite look is the relaxed, wet look – so sleek and sophisticated!” Neil Smith, Barrie Stephen Hair
KAM HAIR AND BODY SPA
STYLE RULES THIS SUMMER
“For easy beach curls, the OSiS+ Session Label Salt Spray is perfect and for wet hair, work Schwarzkopf Professional’s BC Moisture Kick Defining Cream into the hair, blotting with a towel before combing into the desired shape. Twist some of the product into the hair from the nape in sections and create big twists, leaving to dry naturally.” Neil Atkinson, Mahogany
“It’s always a good idea for clients to get their hair cut right before they go on holiday. In hot, humid climates a new cut will help reduce frizz as there will be less split ends, which only get worse in the heat. I also suggest that my clients nourish their hair as much as possible before they step out into the sun. A great at-home treatment is to use a deep conditioning hair masque such as the ASP Hydro-Revive Masque. Tell them to pop it on the night before they go away and it will nourish the hair and scalp, ready for the holiday.” Mark Mountney, Zoology /23

SUMMER WAXING SOS! We couldn’t end our summer hair focus without a little nod to hair elsewhere! Here Lisa Stone talks summer waxing. “With many clients getting ready to go on holiday and get into their bikinis, intimate waxing is very popular in the summer. I would say the most popular intimate wax is the ‘Hollywood’; a treatment that is not only for female clients but is also becoming increasingly more popular with male clients. “Working on any intimate area is a completely different ball game as hair growth is different and with the direction of growth being so vast, different techniques and types of wax need to be considered. Whilst some self-taught therapists do offer intimate waxing, it’s always advisable to attend a specific intimate waxing course as amongst other reasons, a certificate in intimate waxing for both male and female could be required for insurance purposes.

Since rejoining the firm eight years ago, Jeremy has made many minor changes, but taking the Strictly Professional line vegan was a major decision. I ask him: why vegan – why now? “The SP skincare range had remained pretty much untouched over 28 years, apart from when we changed the packaging. I’ve been back with the brand for about eight years and I wanted to change things; it was time to do something.
"We looked at what the rest of the market was doing and also at future trends. We soon discovered how important a vegan range could be, especially considering that we are a wholesale, lower-priced range and no-one else is really delivering quality vegan products at a sensible price. We want our clients to be able to walk into a wholesaler and be able to buy a vegan-friendly, paraben-free, mineral oil-free, artificial fragrance-free range that can deliver at the right price. We wanted to be the first to deliver this quality in the wholesale environment." "We also carried out a questionnaire with our wholesale clients, asking them what they would like to see more of; a vegan option turned out to be one of their highest priorities, so we knew it was time to do something about it."
“Our skincare has always been based around four different skin types, so we had to formulate products that would cleanse, tone, moisturise, mask and exfoliate each different type, and of course, they needed to be stable (because we’re taking parabens out) and also have a vegan-friendly slant. So, there was a lot of testing! The products still had to work. We focused on getting the best formulations and the whole process took about two years, from the initial drawings to seeing the manufacturer.”
The revamped range has been available for the past year and the feedback has been great. Jeremy says: “Our customers trust that the products work, and industry experts that we have consulted with agree. Next up we’re looking at reformulating a few more key products, such as the eye cream and eye gel, as well as adding some new products, hopefully by the end of the year. Skincare has always been the main focus of the range, but the transformation could carry across to the mani/pedi products too.”
WHY SP? DANA COOPER, OF LUSCIOUS SKINCARE, TALKS ABOUT WHY WORKING WITH STRICTLY PROFESSIONAL IS A NO-BRAINER. My favourite product from the revamped Strictly Professional line would be from the dry skin range; the new formulations are fantastic – I’m really impressed! It’s proving very popular with my clients, as are the exfoliants. Many of my clients have asked about vegan-friendly products, so SP offers real benefits. I’m happy to be able to offer vegan-friendly options; I see it as a really positive move that makes sense considering how much the industry is growing. For me, the major benefit of using Strictly Professional products is that they offer outstanding results for a reasonable price using great quality ingredients. What more do you need?

"We’re very much a family business, even though we’re not actually a family. The original founder passed away, but his wife is still a director on our board; in one of our meetings it turned out that her daughter is vegan. She's 18 years old, the same age of many beauty therapists who are just starting out. As an older generation it’s easy for us to ignore what’s going on, so we started to really consider bringing out a vegan product,” says Jeremy.
POSITIVE FEEDBACK
“We want you to be able to walk into a wholesaler and pick up a vegan brand that doesn’t just do the job – we’re taking it to the next level – we want people to be proud to have this range in their salon. With the economy being as it is, salons often have a secondary range, suitable for clients who have less time to spend in the salon and are also conscious of a budget, and that’s where this line fits in perfectly.” SALES DIRECTOR JEREMY ROGERS /29

EVERYONE LOVES ANDREW BARTON. NO, SERIOUSLY, THEY DO! YORKSHIRE-BORN ANDREW IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO EVERYONE WARMS TO, AND NO-ONE HAS A BAD WORD TO SAY ABOUT. NOT ONLY DOES HE RUN A BUSY, CELEB-WORTHY SALON AND HEAD UP A THRIVING HAIRCARE BUSINESS, ANDREW IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST-LOVED T V ST YLISTS OUT THERE, AND YET HE STILL DOES IT ALL WITH THAT INFEC TIOUS GRIN. WHILE CELEBR ATING HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY IN BEIRUT, ANDREW TOOK SOME TIME OUT TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS WE’VE BEEN DYING TO ASK. INTERVIEW Charisse Kenion IMAGERY Courtesy of Andrew Barton /32
IF I WASN’T A HAIRDRESSER I WOULD BE… I don’t know! I can’t think of anything else I have wanted to do; my career has been so rewarding and enjoyable.
ANDREW BARTON
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN HAIR? I trained as an apprentice in my home town and the training I received was of the highest standard. I was taught to never accept ‘okay’ as a standard and that has stood with me ever since, and is an inspiration for all I do now. My training was strict and very disciplined. At the time I didn’t realise the value of those standards but now I totally appreciate my humble beginnings in that village salon.

WHERE’S ‘HOME’ TO YOU? Home is London. It’s a bit of a love/hate relationship but I still get an excited feeling every time I cross one of the London bridges. My native home is Yorkshire and I’m very proud of my roots (excuse the pun!) and am proud to be an ambassador for Yorkshire, promoting tourism, industry and enterprise. Next year I will be launching a very exciting creative project in my home town of Barnsley (find out more at the end of this article.)
WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY? It goes back to what I learnt as an apprentice – never to accept ‘okay’ as a standard. It actually means things are not okay – and it means your client is not coming back.
"The best bit of my job is seeing a woman smile in the mirror when I’ve finished her hair at the salon."
WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT HAIRDRESSING WAS WHAT YOU WERE BORN TO DO? I wasn’t academic at all at school, but excelled in art and design and certainly had a creative leaning, so I always knew that I was destined for something artistic. I started studying at art college but my working-class roots led me to get a job – I’d had enough of college and wanted to earn money! I got a job in a hairdressing salon and my mother insisted that if I was to do an apprenticeship, it had to be with the best salon in the area, and it was. /33
WHEN IT COMES TO RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL SALON, WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS? Like any business, it’s about consistency. Whether it’s managing my salon team, managing my consumer haircare business or my education consultancy business. It’s all about being consistent.
C A PI TA L ICON
YOU’VE NO DOUBT SEEN IT ALL IN YOUR CAREER – WHAT’S YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT? Possibly one of the funniest moments was when a client came into the salon with her Afghan hound and told me she wanted her hair cut and coloured to match the fur of her dog. She meant it. She wanted her hair cut to the same length and coloured to match the dog’s fur!
WHAT’S THE ONE ASPECT OF WHAT YOU DO THAT MAKES YOU THINK, ‘GOD, I LOVE MY JOB’? I’m very blessed to work in various areas of the hair industry, from styling hair on glamorous magazine shoots, to presenting shows; taking part in seminars around the world, as well as working on television shows and of course running my own consumer haircare business. It’s all creatively challenging and fun, but the best bit of my job is seeing a woman smile in the mirror when I’ve finished her hair at the salon. As Creative Director for Urban Retreat at Harrods, the world’s biggest hair and beauty destination, we are faced with the same challenges as any salon - it’s just on a much larger scale. The underlying factor is that we all have the power to transform how a woman looks and feels about herself through our hairdressing skills and creativity, whether we are based in a large or small salon, village or city. After 30 years in the industry this is still the most satisfying part of my job.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW? The hairdressing industry is an ever-changing, creative, evolving business and being prepared for change and embracing change is key to success. Retail and colour sales are two of the growth areas to consider in the years ahead. Clients have changed their habits in many ways with haircuts lasting longer, as our technical skills develop. Our clients have got better at managing their own hair with a huge selection of tools and products to play with. It’s how we progress which makes the UK one of the strongest hair industries in the world. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CUTTING HAIR OR TRAVELLING, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO WIND DOWN? I love time with my friends and family and a calendar year always involves some down time to relax on holiday. My daily down-time involves some form of exercise. I realised how much I benefit from the physical, emotional and mental benefits of exercise many years ago, so each day I plan some into my schedule and that’s how I relax. I’m currently training for the London Marathon which I’m running in aid of The Prince’s Trust, who I work with as an ambassador, mentoring young people for the workplace.

WHAT SHOULD ALL HAIRDRESSERS/SALON OWNERS PRIORITISE WHEN IT COMES TO RUNNING THE BUSINESS? It’s a good idea to have a plan; setting targets and goals for any business is vital and then working towards these goals. I worked with the CEO of Avon a few years ago, developing a creative project which was very exciting. She told me that each night when she got home, she would sack herself, and come back the next day asking herself: ‘what would I do here in my first day on the job – what would I see and what can I do about it?’ I thought it was an amazing business principle. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER? There have been so many highlights, including launching my signature consumer haircare range; being appointed Creative Director of the world’s largest hair and beauty salon at Urban Retreat, Harrods… but the biggest highlight has to be receiving British Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards in 2006. I realised that what came with that honour was the responsibility to represent and fly the British hairdressing flag as best I could, and that is my motivation. AND WHAT’S NEXT? There are many projects ahead but possibly the most exciting is the launch of my very own exhibition: ‘Beehives, Bobs and Blowdries’, which charts the cultural, iconic and historic references of hair and hairdressing. The exhibition launches in my home town of Barnsley in February 2018 and is then set to tour the world. I hope you all will come and see the exhibition.

WE ALL KNOW THAT ONE UNLUCK Y PERSON. WHETHER THEY’RE A FRIEND, FAMILY MEMBER OR AN ACQUAINTANCE, THEY’RE THE ONE WHOSE TREATMENT WENT WRONG; WHOSE CLIENT HAD AN ALLERGIC REAC TION TO THE HAIR DYE THEY WERE USING; WHO’S HAD TO PAY UP THOUSANDS IN COMPENSATION BEC AUSE A CLIENT SLIPPED IN THEIR DEAN LAMING SALON. AND DESPITE THIS FAC T, THERE’S A S TAGGERING PROPORTION OF HAIR AND BEAUT Y PROFESSIONAL S AND SALON OWNERS WHO S TILL DON’ T HAVE INSUR ANCE. HERE, DEAN L AMING, MANAGING DIREC TOR OF HAIR AND BEAUT Y INSUR ANCE SPECIALIS TS, SALON GOLD, TALKS ABOUT THE PITFALL S OF NOT BEING INSURED.
“However, it’s highly recommended that you have public liability and treatment risk included in your policy too, in order to protect yourself against injuries to the public. “Many salon owners don’t realise this, but the need for insurance actually goes even further. A good specialist salon insurance policy will also provide protection for your premises from flood, fire, theft, broken windows and even cover any legal or staff disputes. It could really save your business in times of hardship. “For professionals working alone though, the same question always comes back around: ‘if I’m not employing anyone and have no legal obligation to have insurance, what’s the point in having it at all?’ “It’s all the more important to have insurance if you’re working as a freelance or mobile professional. With court cases becoming more and more commonplace, the costs of fighting a claim in court could cost you thousands. Public liability cover, and treatment risk especially, are a real god-send for those working alone; they ensure that, even in the event of a client making a claim, your policy will cover you. The price of your insurance per year (circa £50) is a small amount to pay when weighed up against the potential costs of fighting a legal case – or paying out the compensation.”

TAKE care
“Being insured is a business necessity, and yet we all know somebody who is choosing not to invest. The most common reason for this lies in some ambiguity about whether or not you legally have to have insurance. To be fair, whether you’re a freelancer or a salon owner, from a legal standpoint, the only insurance you need is employer’s liability insurance, if you’re employing staff in your business.

FROM THE GROUND UP “Our salon used to be known as Zhuzh and was established 10 years ago by my partner Vicky, but when one partner left, I came on-board (it’s my first salon) and we decided to give the salon a new name. That was back in October last year, and by January this year we had decided to refurbish the salon, within two weeks. It might sound crazy but it was very important that the refurb happened as quickly as possible so that we didn’t unsettle the existing client base. “It was a massive job and no-one expected it to be finished; we had clients ringing constantly – we diverted the calls to my phone – and they were all concerned, saying there was no way we
would be open and ready to go in two weeks. They could easily have been right, as we had so much to do! “We completely reconfigured the downstairs, gutting and stripping out everything, with a complete rewiring. Cosmetically, the salon is completely unrecognisable from the salon we had before. Our vision was all about clean, clear lines and we wanted the salon to look very open. The previous salon front was halfway bricked up, so we raised the glass and opened up the other side to let in more natural light. We also lifted the false ceiling inside to create a more spacious feel.”
BUDGET WOES “We did have a budget but we did go over! The building was so old so there were lots of unforeseen costs – every day was a challenge. It was great to have the Capital Hair and Beauty showroom in Hayes; it’s a great help to actually be able to see products and fittings in the flesh. “Our clients are amazed and say that they love the fresher look, so I’d advise anyone who’s thinking that they’re ready to make the change to go with their gut!”
