Woodhouse Day Spa SMALL BUSINESS WINNER FEATURE By Kim Chatelain |
It may seem cruel and ironic that a business offering peace, comfort and rejuvenation was forced to shut down during the coronavirus crisis. Such was life for spas across the state. At Woodhouse Day Spa, staff members help guests escape from the stress in their lives. To do that, the employees must create a relaxing environment that guests notice the minute they walk through the door. At Woodhouse, a repeat Top Workplaces winner in the Small Companies division, that peaceful environment is achieved because employees are in tune with the needs of both one another and the guests. “Everyone sincerely asks each

other how we are from day to day,” said Jason Porche, a massage therapist who has been at Woodhouse for eight years. “We all celebrate victories together and hurt together when someone is in pain.” Woodhouse, which was founded in New Orleans in 2011, employs about 40 people who offer guests more than 70 spa services including massage, body treatments, facials, waxing and nail services. Employees say the spa is an outstanding place to work. “The camaraderie I feel with Woodhouse is so special,” massage therapist Erica Gonzales said. “Whether its holiday parties, crawfish boils, or baby showers,
spending time with my colleagues is truly enjoyable and makes me look forward to coming to work each day.” In mid-March, Woodhouse and other similar businesses were forced to shut down for more than two months as part of an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. General Manager Giselle McBee said she drove to Baton Rouge to help get answers regarding financial help for employees. The business was able to get a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program that helped hold the workforce together. “We are thankful that we were able to receive the PPP loan to keep our employees on payroll
and have a job to come back to,” McBee said. Employees said Woodhouse management served as a model of how an employer can help workers at crunch time. “During the immediate aftermath of the coronavirus shutdown, amongst mass confusion about payroll and unemployment, management and ownership provided me with the money I needed to survive,” Porche said. Gonzales said McBee stood by employees during the shutdown. “Giselle offered to help with those of us that were struggling, offering to bring groceries, help cover bills” and file for benefits, said Gonzales, who has worked at Woodhouse for five years. “Management is always on your side to help you through the day,” said Melissa Martin (Lead Esthetician and a Woodhouse employee for five years). “They genuinely care and know how much of ourselves we give to people. We are real people and have real emotions and it’s important to have someone to listen and help when it’s needed.”
McBee said turnover at Woodhouse is low by industry standards, a fact she attributes to being attentive to the needs of employees. “I constantly think about our team,” she said. “I think about ways to make their lives easier every day at work. I encourage all team members to keep open communication with me at all times and truly care about how they are outside of work. When you genuinely care, you can’t mess up.”

Stone Creek Club & Spa MIDSIZE BUSINESS WINNER FEATURE By Kim Chatelain | When employees arrive for work at Stone Creek Club and Spa near Covington, it’s not unusual for them to see General Manager Larry Conner picking up leaves in the parking lot or mopping up a spill in the lobby. It’s not that the club lacks a maintenance staff. It’s that management at the upscale health and fitness center promotes a team-oriented “Disney World environment” that creates an atmosphere that is pleasurable for the club’s members and its approximately 200 employees. The staff members at Stone Creek, the Mid-sized winner for Top Workplaces, say the team approach created by caring managers fosters a pleasant work environment that ultimately leads to a high standard of service for the approximately 5,500 members. “Our philosophy has always been to take care of the team and the team will take care of everything else,” said Conner, who has worked in the local fitness and

hospitality industries for 30 years. “When we do surveys of our members, it’s clear they have a great appreciation for our employees who have adopted our approach.” Marvin Gresse, the assistant general manager, said because all employees buy into the club’s mission everyone takes it upon themselves to promote hospitality. The staff refers to the approach as the “take care principle,” which helps create an optimal experience for members, he said. For example, when a sudden thunderstorm this spring left a several tennis players huddled under a shelter, a couple of young employees instinctively grabbed umbrellas, rushed out into the downpour and walked the players back to the safety of the main building. They did so without being told by a supervisor, Conner said. “That wasn’t part of our training or protocol,” Conner said. “They just did it.” Like other health clubs and hospitality businesses, Stone Creek was forced to
close its doors when the coronavirus crisis struck in mid-March. It remained closed for about two months and members’ dues were suspended. While managers worked some from home and met regularly via Zoom, the vast majority of the employees were not able to work at all. However, they continued to be paid and kept their benefits throughout the closure. “We didn’t want our employees to go away,” Conner said. “We paid them all the way through.” Employee Lisa Familia said staying on the payroll throughout the shutdown is an example of the way Stone Creek treats its employees, who in turn are motivated to provide the highest possible service to members. “Stone Creek’s management team is highly principled, member’s first and (is about doing) what’s right,” she said. “If you do what is right for the majority of people concerned, everything will fall into place.” Madalyn Bilac started working at Stone Creek four years ago, when she was a junior in high school. Now entering her senior year in college, Bilac said the experience has helped her prepare for the future. “Through the years I have had the privilege of meeting some of the most admirable and influential people,” Bilac said. “What I love most about Stone Creek is the sense of encouragement and teamwork we all strive to achieve as a whole. I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing team.” Both Conner and Gresse said that managers of health clubs from around the country have visited Stone Creek to study its model of organizational leadership. “I’ve worked at different places during my career,” Gresse said. “In the end, this place is special.”

Laitram LARGE BUSINESS WINNER FEATURE By Kim Chatelain |
In 1943, James Martial Lapeyre, then 16 years old, was working at a Houma seafood-packing plant when he came up with an idea to make shrimp peeling easier. Four years later, the teen’s concept led to the issuance of a patent for the world’s first shrimp peeling machine. Lapeyre’s invention revolutionized the shrimping industry and spawned a Harahan-based company known today as the Laitram Corporation, which includes four operating divisions and about 2,000 employees worldwide – just over 1,700 of whom are in the New Orleans area. A global leader in the manufacturing of conveyor belts, the company holds more than 1,300 active patents. Laitram – a name derived by spelling Lapeyre’s middle name backwards – attributes much of its success to a workplace featuring an

intense commitment to innovation, integrity and a culture where employees support one another for the common good of the company, its shareholders and customers. Employees at Laitram, Large Companies winners for The TimesPicayune | New Orleans Advocate’s 2020 Top Workplaces competition, say they value a work environment that allows them to be self-managed professionals with an eye toward the type of creative autonomy that fosters corporate success and high company morale. “The work environment at Laitram is deeply rooted in our business philosophies and they ground us in everything we do,” said Jennifer McMillan, the company’s human resources director. “Most businesses hang the posters up touting their business
philosophy or principles and it stops there. But employees at Laitram live them every day.” McMillan said the company has an aggregate employee turnover rate of 7% and a corporate office turnover rate of about 3%, both far below industry averages. The national turnover rate for all industries has hovered around 17%, studies show. Gregory Washington, an extrusion supervisor in the company’s Intralox Division, said he values the autonomy the job provides. “No one is micromanaging your efforts or telling you what to do,” Washington said. “Creativity, productivity and individual growth expectations are set high by all of us. We challenge and motivate one another to improve and soar to new heights.” Washington said the company

family,” said LeBlanc, who began working at Laitram when she was in college. “Not just within my team and my division, but across divisions with employees who I haven’t worked with directly. The company picnic feels like a family reunion.” With coronavirus virus guidelines in place this spring, McMillan said corporate employees were immediately empowered to work from home. Manufacturing facility employees were provided with protective equipment and had their temperature tested regularly. Sanitizing was stepped up, using electro-static treatment in high touch areas. “Rather than layoffs or
furloughs, we actually provided an incentive for our employees who still had to come in as a thank you for the hard work,” McMillan said. In addition, the company’s onsite health clinic gave employees and their families access to COVID-19 testing and support and helped parents meet their child care needs while daycare centers were closed due to the coronavirus lockdown. “We believe we rose to the occasion to meet the needs of our employees during this trying time,” McMillan said. “As an essential business, we needed to ensure that our operations could still run but that employee health and safety was our top priority.” Top Workplaces New Orleans 2020

How does it work? METHODOLOGY By Kim Chatelain So how does a company or agency make the list of the Top Workplaces in the region? The answer lies with its employees. For the sixth year, The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate teamed up with Philadelphia-based employee research and consulting firm Energage for an awards program that identifies the best small, mid-
size and large workplaces in the seven-parish metro New Orleans region. Energage uses a scientifically sound and anonymous employee survey to identify the best workplaces in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. Tammany parishes. This year, 100 companies and agencies, the most ever for the

local contest, signed up. Last year, 80 local organizations competed for the accolades. The competition is designed to highlight standout job providers and identify ways that organizations can become places where people want to work. As lagniappe, it also encourages workplace pride and boosts morale among employees. Starting last fall, The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate welcomed anyone to nominate entities in the Top Workplaces competition. Any organization was eligible to participate, so long as it had at least 35 employees. Combined, the 100 participating entities employed 45,291 people at the time of the survey. Of that number, 32,690 received surveys and 16,573 responded. This employee engagement survey consists of 24 questions regarding issues relating to workplace culture: • Alignment – where the company is headed, its values, cooperation, effective meetings • Coaching – managers care about concerns, are helpful, encourage employee development • Connection – employees feel appreciated, their work is meaningful • Engagement – productivity,
retention, recruiting • Leadership – confidence in company leaders • Performance – execution, open-mindedness, innovation, clued-in leadership • The Basics – pay, benefits, flexibility, training, expectations To accurately compare results, employers are ranked among similar- sized competitors to create three categories: large with 400 or more employees, mid-sized with 125-399 employees, and small with 124 or fewer on staff. Employers are ranked within those size groupings, with those scoring highly gaining recognition as a Top Workplace. This year, eight of the 11 in the running in the large division won accolades; 27 of the 37 participants in the mid-size category were honored; and 35 small employers out of 53 made the cut. If a participant is not on the list of winners, it could be because it chose not to participate in the survey or did not score well enough in the process. Energage sometimes disqualifies entities due to questionable results detected through statistical tests it runs to ensure accuracy.
Nola vs. Nation SURVEY RESULTS
New Orleans-area employees value certain workplace qualities more or less compared with workers in other parts in the country. The following importance statements from the 2020 Energage survey of Top Workplaces are listed in the order of greatest difference between New Orleans employees’ positivity
rating and the U.S. average. For example, almost threequarters of respondents in the New Orleans survey said they do things efficiently and well at their organization. That’s nearly one percentage point higher than respondents across the U.S.

I love my job because... QUOTES FROM LOCAL EMPLOYEES As part of the 2020 survey, employees in Greater New Orleans submitted the following answers when asked why they loved their jobs in the Top Workplaces survey. They are identified by their company names only.
I have been blessed to have management that knows how to balance respect for their employees with good work ethics. Employees want to come to work and work to meet month end goals as a team.
I know what my role is, how to stay focused on the priorities, and we are all focused on the same goals. There is little ambiguity in what we are focused on. I know that my opinion is highly valued and my ideas are heard which is refreshing.

This is the only job I have ever had that I feel genuinely important at. I love that I can come to work and be happy to be here.
I am challenged every single day. I can look back every 90 days in my role and know I am constantly improving and evolving. The growth at RCI allows me to stay engaged in my work. Our approach to collaboration and idea-sharing is very refreshing as I have not been able to be so open about my opinions at other places of employment.
