HOW DO YOU FOSTER A CULTURE OF INNOVATION? Entrepreneurs talk about how they find great ideas to help their businesses

“Whenever we do come up with a new idea I can’t wait to share it with the staff because it truly supports why they’re a part of Tool Shed. They’re not part of Tool Shed for a pay cheque, heaven knows that, and they’re not there just to drink beer either. When we go out and we tell the story of the beer we’re working on right now (there’s only one man in the room right now who knows the new beer we’re launching soon), it’s gonna blow some skulls apart! And when the staff heard the story of what we were gonna do, they were like, “Yes, this is a company I want to be a part of”. That innovation truly, truly gets the staff totally bought in.” GRAHAM SHERMAN, co - owner of Tool Shed Brewing,

“Just do it. Stop talking about it, just do it. But I also think people get enamoured with the sexy idea or the new, and they only think about starting their own business when they say, “No one else is doing this. I’m gonna go do this”. I would strongly encourage people to think outside of that realm and realize you can compete on so many levels. You can be competing on logistics, you can be competing on price. You can come into a market that you already consider flooded with competitors and you can still win on many, many levels. Your marketing, your branding, how creative you are. There is a multitude of ways to start a business.”

“I’ve been a chef my whole life and I always thought buying knives should be a really cool, fun, awesome day. And it just never was. It seemed my choices were to go to a store where they had a lot of swords on the wall and the guy was interested about talking about throwing knives and I didn’t want that. So I thought, let’s build a shop where people like coming, people aren’t scared because it’s not creepy. They can try the knives and learn something. They can be engaged and I can play my music just a bit too loud.”
