Thelma Houston
fter 44 years of performing, Motown Legend and Grammy Award Winning artist Thelma Houston continues to celebrate her long and outstanding career and shows no signs of slowing down! Shout Factory Records recently released Thelma Houston’s latest musical gift, A Woman’s Touch. Thelma’s 23rd CD features her very rich interpretations of many classic R&B and pop recordings, originally made famous by such male vocalists as Luther Vandross, Rev. Al Green, Sting, and Marvin Gaye. Thelma was honored to perform on the #1 rated television show in America American Idol where she “tore it up” for an estimated audience of over 25 million people. And shortly after, Thelma was called upon to open up the “finale” of the huge summer show America’s Got Talent! for an estimated TV audience of over 18 million people. Thelma performs at many national dinner receptions for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and was honored to perform in Denver when Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for President. The president of the HRC, Joe Solmonese says, “It doesn’t get much better than Thelma, as she adds nothing but class to our events.” In January 2009, Thelma was asked to “headline” the official inauguration dinner for President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. at the Mayflower Hotel along with her friends Cyndi Lauper and Melissa Etheridge. A Mississippi native, Thelma started out in the 60s performing in gospel music with the Art Reynolds Singers. She then signed to Capitol Records (home of the Beatles, Nat King Cole, and Nancy Wilson) in

1967 and had her first hit song called “Baby Mine.” Soon, Thelma was being courted by several record labels and signed with ABC/Dunhill where she recorded and released her first solo album Sunshower which was written, arranged and produced by the legendary Jimmy Webb. After this critically acclaimed album was released, Thelma decided to accept an offer from one of the biggest record companies around, Motown Records. With Motown, Thelma claimed the top of the Pop, R&B, and Dance charts with her high-powered rendition of “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” That Gold Record classic gave Thelma the distinction of being the first solo female artist at Motown to win the Grammy Award for “Best R&B Female Vocal Performance.” Recently, Thelma rocked Rockefeller Center on NBC’s Today Show and the summer music special Hit Me Baby, One More Time. She dazzled ABCTV’s Motown 45 and glittered at ABC-TV’s The Disco Ball. Along with Aretha Franklin and Mary Wilson, she raised the roof on Love, Rhythm and Blues for PBS. The legendary Nile Rogers called upon Thelma to be his special guest for a sold out concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Thelma also toured with Cher on her “Living Proof” concert tour and recently headlined at Harrah’s in Las Vegas. She is known as a humanitarian for her charitable causes and her tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS, and the City of West Hollywood proclaimed a special day as “Thelma Houston Day.” She has donated her talents to numerous charities including a recent performance at “Divine Design” for Project Angel Food, AIDS Project Los Angeles, and the Minority AIDS Project, to which she donated her $20,000 winnings from the TV show Hit Me Baby. About the Entertainment is also very active in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood branch of the NAACP. She has also been inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in New York City and honored as an “Apollo Legend” on the syndicated hit TV show, Showtime at the Apollo. Thelma has appeared with Phoebe Snow, Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, and CeCe Peniston as the “Sisters of Glory” in New York City. This rousing performance received a special request to

perform at The Vatican for the Pope. With appearances from Tokyo to Las Vegas to London and beyond, Thelma continues to bring audiences to their feet with her dynamic, energetic show. This Diva logs over 200 performances annually and the singer/songwriter is enjoying every moment of her success, “I still feel a tremendous excitement about performing,” states the upbeat songstress, “and I have so many more things I want to do and I have no plans to retire”.
The Glamazons
he Glamazons are a pop girl group best known for making it to the Top 8 on Season 2 of America’s Got Talent! Created in 2001, The Glamazons are a pop girl group whose mission is to show the world that talent comes in all sizes. They are known for their high energy live shows with tight vocal harmonies and precision choreography in which they perform everything from show tunes to hip hop. The Glamazons started performing in 2001 in NYC clubs including CBGB’s, Fez, The Roxy, Webster Hall, The Supper Club and The Rainbow Room. They came to fame in season 2 of the NBC hit show America’s Got Talent! when they rocketed in grand fashion from auditions to the Top 8 out of 10,000 contestants. For 8 weeks in a row, 25 million viewers watched and voted for the Glamazons! They have an unbelievable dynamic, especially when it comes to tight harmonies and precision choreography. The Glamazons are strong, sexy, voluptuous women who can sing and dance up a storm. The girls have toured all over the world. Highlights include: Italy, Key West, Los Angeles, New York City, and headlining in Branson, MO for a show featuring the Top 10 acts from America’s Got Talent! at the Dutton Family Theatre. They were televised singing the national anthem for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings October 28th game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In spring 2008, they were fashion campaign
supermodels for Torrid’s 2008 Spring Collection, had life size posters in 250 stores nationwide and were featured in Bust, Seventeen, and Glamour magazines. The Glamazons have been seen on Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, WNYW’s Good Day New York, WPIX’s CW 11 morning news, and WNBC’s LX New York. In 2010, they were featured on the Style network’s show Whose Wedding is it Anyway? as they toured the East Coast promoting their album and planning Lady Finger’s wedding! The girls also opened for Joan Rivers at Milwaukee’s Gay Pride, danced in “Broadway Bares XX1: Masterpiece,” a benefit for Broadway Cares; appeared at The Shubert Theatre on Broadway for a benefit for Disney’s “Only Make Believe” foundation hosted by Sir Ian McKellen; and were recently part of Scott Nevin’s holiday show “Sparkle” at XL Nightclub to benefit The Actors Fund. The Glamazons headlined The 40th Annual NYC Village Halloween Parade (PIX11), Full Figured Fashion Week, and the Original GLBT EXPO at The Javits Convention Center in NYC. Most recently The Glamazons were the faces of Eddy & Bri (eddyandbri.com), recorded an original song “Hot Mess” with Drag Superstars Sherry Vine and Bianca Del Rio (RuPaul’s Drag Race), and starred in the music video for Margaret Cho and Adam Barta’s new single “See U Next Tuesday” (available on itunes).

I
nternational Dance Diva Sandy B is the sixoctave voice of the #1 dance anthem “You Make the World Go Round” and follow up hits “Ain’t No Need to Hide,” “Nothingness,” “Feel Like Singing” and “Alone” with DJ Sal Dano. She is primarily known for two of her solo records which reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play chart, “Make the World Go Round” and “Ain’t No Need To Hide” in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Both songs were produced by the duo Deep Dish. In an unusual reversal of the conventional music industry success story, Sandy B had her #1 hits after leaving a major record label for an indie. Though her two chart toppers were released on Champion Records, her debut #1 single “Feel Like Singin” had been released in 1992 on Nervous Records. She also released a single “Back Together” in 1994 on King Street Sounds. After “Make The World Go Round” hit #1, Nervous included the David Morales remix of “Feel Like Singin” on the dance compilation album,100% Pure Dance. In 1998, Sandy had an on-screen appearance in the movie Donnie Brasco, starring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. In 2000 and 2001 she had hits with singles released by the group Karmadelic, on which she performed the lead vocals. “Check It Out” reached #2 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play, and “Nothingness” peaked at #10 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In 2003, she released a solo record “Lose Our Love” via the Junior Vasquez Music label, and it also saw the release of “Love Burns,” written by Janice Robinson and produced by Stonebridge. In 2004, she contributed vocals to the song
“Medicine” which was credited to DJ Mike Cruz Presents China Ro & Sandy B, on Nervous Records, featuring remixes by Dezrok. The same year, she also released “The Beat Is Inside You,” credited to DJ Exacta & Sandy B. In 2005 Sandy co-wrote a song “Risen” with Janice Robinson, which went platinum in Europe for the pop artist, Natalia. In 2006 you could hear her “Being True To Her Groove” in the Disney animation Kronk’s New Groove. As of 2013, Sandy was in the studio working on new material, and is in the process of touring the UK and Europe. Sandy’s “Make the World Go Round” is currently making a huge resurgence in Europe.

Being part of the LGBTQ community and having a developmental disability often adds an extra layer of social stigma. Following the screening, we’ll have a Q&A session with mental health experts on the unique challenges LGBTQ individuals who have developmentally disabilities face, how to shatter the stigma, and services that are available to provide this frequently ignored group of people with a good quality of life. Join us at Café 217 for a special PRIDE paint and sip night! This fun evening is a special Paint Your Own Pottery event. The Pottery Place will be providing pottery which is in the “bisque” phase (white pottery molded from clay and fired once in a kiln). Participants will then be designing and painting their pieces using paints which are ceramic underglazes. After painting, the pieces will be taken to be clear-glazed and fired in the studio’s kilns. This process produces a piece of hand-painted pottery that is shiny, foodsafe, and beautiful! After a week’s time the finished pieces can be picked up at Café 217. We will have food and drink specials with some of the proceeds going back to the Pride Center!

Join us for a second installment of historian Sean Heather McGraw’s continuing project to document the history of the LGBTQ community in the Capital District. Last year’s event was so popular that we decided to reprise it. In addition, we’re going to start a Memory Book Project entitled I Remember... Being LGBTQ in the Capital District, NY in which those who have memories of the Capital District LGBTQ community, as it was in earlier days, may write down their memories.
