Gabby Santos, Director of LGBT Health Services, In Our Own Voices, Inc.
n Our Own Voices Say It Loud! Black & Latino Gay Pride has grown into a vibrant event drawing in hundreds of people to celebrate the contributions and talents of LGBT People of Color (POC). If you are fortunate enough to engage in conversation with Executive Director of IOOV, Tandra La Grone, she will tell you in great detail how this initiative began back in 2006 with only a handful of organizers and $150. Yet, with very few resources the 1st Black & Latino Gay Pride generated 200 LGBT People of Color along with their families, friends and allies. That first outcome was enough to fuel ongoing efforts that have now galvanized over 6,900 Black & Latino Gay Pride planning partners and attendees over the last 10 years. With over 5,000 Black and Latino LGBT POC living in the seven different counties of the Capital District, some of whom we have yet to reach, we continue to build on the early community organizing efforts of our Executive Director and other IOOV pioneers. Say It Loud! Black & Latino Gay Pride remains an LGBT POCled event. The magic of it all lies in the community engagement that empowers LGBT POC to assume leadership and take action. We are intentional about providing opportunities for our communities to have meaningful input about Black & Latino Gay Pride and other initiatives that impact their lives. LGBT POC are faced with a number of social, medical, legal and cultural barriers to health & well-being due to stigma, marginalization and oppression. Black & Latino Gay Pride offers a Health & Wellness Expo that provides free, confidential medical screenings and community resources, along with food and entertainment that appeals to communities of color. This event sheds light on the health disparities that exist in our communities while also offering solutions and linkages to care. Although mainstream Prides provide a safe, celebratory space for LGBT people, many LGBT POC individuals do not find the events culturally affirming and inclusive of their unique foods, music and political views. 40 • Capital Pride 2016
In some ways, Black & Latino Gay Pride restores our energy and confidence that is oftentimes drained by racism, homophobia, transphobia and other forms of oppression. Black & Latino Gay Pride gives us a safe space to rethink and reclaim racial justice practices that help build the social capital needed to promote healthy and thriving LGBT POC communities. As members of the Center for Black Equity (CBE), we are also part of a global movement that organizes and promotes annual Black Prides across the world. “Over 350,000 members of Black/African American LGBT communities attended Black Prides in the recent years,” reports the CBE. IOOV is PROUD to Say It Loud! year after year and we will continue to engage in a unified voice, one encounter at a time. In Our Own Voices, our sponsors, our stakeholders, and our network of friends and allies, welcome your participation in the week-long events of Say It Loud! Black & Latino Gay Pride. This is a time to gather in community as we celebrate each other and all of our contributions that have made meaningful change. This time also serves as a call to action to unite our voices in reverence to all LGBT POC who are no longer with us, but who remain at the center of our social change efforts. About the Entertainment
Dev
D
ev, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter who was discovered on MySpace by the production team The Cataracs after a friend posted her singing to some beat. Six months later, Dev and The Cataracs’ song “2Nite” began to gain exposure on the radio, the television channel MTVU, and the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart. In 2010, the Cataracs produced “Like a G6” with Far East Movement and decided to use a verse from Dev’s single “Booty Bounce” as the chorus. “Like a G6,” which features Far East Movement and Dev, was released in April 2010, and reached number one on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 chart. The song went on to sell over three million downloads in the U.S. In August 2010, a music video was made for “Booty Bounce,” directed by Ethan Adler, and was uploaded to YouTube where it has generated almost 15 million views. In October 2010, Dev was signed to Universal Republic and released the hit singles “Bass Down Low” and “In the Dark.” So far Dev’s music videos have generated nearly 100 million views on YouTube with over 50 million for the “In the Dark” video alone. A much-in-demand collaborator, Dev has worked as a guest vocalist on tracks for such superstars as 50 Cent, Travis Barker, Flo Rida, Ludacris, Tinie Tempah, Snoop Dogg, New Boyz, Demi Lovato, JLS, David Guetta, Timbaland, Afrojack, Eric Saade, and Static Revenger. Dev’s debut album The Night the Sun Came Up was released in the United Kingdom in 2011 and the United States in 2012 and contained the hit single “In My Trunk” and the American version included a duet with Enrique Iglesias entitled “Naked.” About her second full length album, set to be released this year, Dev says, “I’m using a lot more live instrumentation for this album.… I had such a great time making a very electronic-based album for the first one, but you know, I’m just moving to different things, different sounds, so we’ll see.” The album will feature the hip-hop producers Bangladesh and Hit-Boy along with the team Dreamlab, Brian Lee, and the producersongwritter Mathew “Blackbear” Musto who co-wrote “Boyfriend” for Justin Bieber. www.capitalpridecenter.org • 45

About the Entertainment
bell’s roar
B
ell’s Roar began with just a guitar and a voice. Over the years, Sean Desiree has transformed her solo project by fully taking advantage of her skills as a drummer, bassist, and ultimately producer. Her approach to music is DIY not because of its aesthetic, but because it’s how she keeps her voice ever-present. The music is rooted in a melodic feel, but the beats transform it into energetic and dynamic electronic compositions. Her debut EP Bell’s Roar is a forceful and sensitive collection of six beautiful and personal songs. The combination of loopy post-rock guitars, hip-hop beats, and r-and-b vocals is equally suited for the dance floor, living room, or headphones. The vocals, guitar layering and synth-driven beats are best described as “synth-pop/ post-rock/soul.”
Macero
M
acero has been known to deliver bone-chilling performances with aggressive guitar solos and powerhouse vocals of pure soul. Her undying passion and professional integrity from her performances have been described and reviewed by many as “memorable and remarkable.” Her sound has been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Joss Stone, and Steven Tyler. The energy and uncompromising determination of Margo Macero has been characterized as boundless. Music is not just a job; it is a journey of experience and lessons to be learned. With each environment comes a different crowd and a different culture of audience.
