WELCOME TO PRIDE 2017! The LGBTQ community is a complex tapestry of diversity. Our annual celebration of PRIDE is just one way we come together and hold our heads high and celebrate our lives. Every year at this time we have an opportunity to recommit to the fight and the conviction that we will never go back into the shadows, we will not be silenced, we refuse to be marginalized, we will stand up for ourselves and one another. We will celebrate and embrace our unique differences and demand equality for every lesbian, every gay person, every bi-sexual person, every transgender, gender non-conforming individual, and every color of the rainbow regardless of age or ethnicity. Now and always. I have been given an amazing opportunity to represent and serve as the Executive Director of the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ center in the country. I cherish this gift. As a young person who grew up in the 70’s struggling with my sexuality, a supportive, safe and nurturing community center to turn to would have made my youth a lot less lonely and frightening. Anyone who believes that the Pride Center is no longer relevant or important fails to understand that so many people of all ages are out there today struggling mightily. Whether or not we remain a trusted lifeline is up to you. I welcome all of you to PRIDE 2017. Dear Friends: It is a pleasure to send greetings to members of our state's LGBTQ community, along with families, friends, and neighbors gathered for celebrations of Pride. New York State has long been a champion of social, civil, and human rights. From our storied history in the fight for the abolition of slavery and our important role in the Underground Railroad, to the start of the women's rights movement at Seneca Falls, to the rebels at Stonewall who birthed the modern LGBTQ rights movement, we find inspiration and strength in the leadership our state has played in furthering freedom. In New York, we are proud to embrace our differences. Pride events bring New Yorkers together in a spirit of unity to celebrate the culture and contributions ofLGBTQ communities across our state. Thanks to a strong network of activism, people of all ages and backgrounds who participate in Pride contribute to raising awareness of issues that continue to affect LGBTQ communities nationwide. Here in New York, we are proud of the progress we have made in achieving equality for our LGBTQ neighbors. We have recognized that love is love by passing marriage equality. We have declared zero tolerance for bias-motivated harassment and violence by establishing the Statewide Hate Crimes Task Force. We have worked to protect transgender New Yorkers with an Executive Order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity. We have even invited LGBTQ people from around the world to come enjoy our great state through the I LOVE NY LGBT tourism initiative. The Empire State will always be a safe and welcoming place for all people. Our voices matter here, our rights are protected, and our differences celebrated. Today, we stand with a reaffirmed commitment to further New York's progressive values as we celebrate LGBTQ Pride. With warmest regards and best wishes for a wonderful Pride celebration. Sincerely,

About the Entertainment Betty Who

’ve always been the type of person who will tell you everything and put myself out there totally unglossed,” says Betty Who. “Writing is therapeutic in that way. I want other people to be able to hear a song and say, ‘That’s how I felt, but was too afraid to say it.’ And that’s the beauty of music, you can really say anything you want with a catchy hook.” Therein lies the magic of Betty Who and her explosive rise to fame on the strength of her breakout debut EP, The Movement. Lead single “Somebody Loves You” debuted at #4 on Spotify’s Most Viral list, racking up more than six million streams and earning her raves from BuzzFeed and Perez Hilton to SPIN and Nylon, along with spreads in Elle (who called her “your next pop obsession”), Cosmopolitan, and more. TIME named her one of “14 To Watch in 2014,” New York magazine described her as a mix of “early Madonna…Katy Perry and Robyn, with spunk and confidence,” and Billboard hailed her “shimmering tracks…and arresting pop textures.” To call the EP an unexpected triumph would be an understatement, especially considering it was initially released independently. But I had this cello that I started playing when I was four, and I played a lot of classical music until I was 18, so I’d be dancing in my room to ‘Genie In A Bottle’ and then I would go to orchestra rehearsal.” Who earned acceptance to the prestigious Interlochen Center of the Arts in Michigan, where she excelled in the rigorous classical program. On a trip to Boston during her senior year to audition for the Berklee College of Music, Who was introduced to Peter Thomas, who would become integral to her career months later when she returned to enroll in the school. “He came to me right before he withdrew from Berklee and said we should mess around in the studio and see what happens,” Who remembers. “I think from that day forward we spent almost every night at our engineer’s apartment, all crammed around the computer talking about songs and what we wanted and what we didn’t want. We did a lot of discovering who we were, and Peter became one of my best friends.”

axine Nightingale is a world famous, Grammynominated pop/dance/jazz/R&B contemporary recording artist who has been touring all over the world for the past 25 years. Maxine’s debut multi-platinum pop single “Right Back Where We Started From” hit the #1 position in 24 countries around the world, including the U.S. In 1976, Maxine was nominated for a Grammy for “Best New Artist of the Year” for her huge hit single “Right Back.” Maxine’s album Lead Me On was certified multiplatinum in 20 countries and it produced another #1 hit single “Lead Me On” on the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary Billboard Charts. She was the “special Guest” of Nile Rodgers and performed for 18,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl, which she tore up with her high energy style. Maxine headlined a U.S. Disco Tour with Thelma Houston, Martha Wash, The Village People, The Trammps, and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Maxine recently graced the stage and tore it up on the nationwide PBS special called My Music, 70’s Soul Spectacular. Her hit song “Right Back Where I Started From” has been featured on the soundtrack for the hit movies Starsky and Hutch and The Family Stone, and can also be heard in various commercials. Maxine was thrilled to be invited to record three of Donna Summer’s classic songs (“On the Radio,” “Love to Love You Baby,” and “Dim All the Lights”) on the recent album Disco Tribute to Donna Summer. She has toured the world including Europe, Australia, Asia, Japan, mainland China, Mexico, Denmark, Costa Rica, Canada, Venezuela, Spain, Greece, France, Germany, and Africa. In February 2014 Maxine was booked by Resorts International Hotel in Atlantic City to headline her own show for a three-month run called “Disco Lady starring Maxine Nightingale,” where she played to SRO crowds nightly! Our Mission The mission of the Pride Center of the Capital Region is to promote the well-being of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-identified people and those affected by discrimination based on gender identity and expression. Based in Albany, the Pride Center has been meeting the diverse needs of LGBTQ people in a ten county region since 1970.
