2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. What started as a riot in the streets after the NYC police raided the Stonewall Inn set off a social and civil rights movement that continues to this day. It is so vitally important that we take the time to know our history. Without acknowledging the sacrifices that so many in our collective communities have made in the last 50 years, we lose sight of all of the progress that has been achieved. The strength of those who fought so hard against hate, bigotry and persecution 50 years ago remind us to remain strong as we face new obstacles and challenges. With love and compassion in our hearts, we can keep moving forward, together. Now is the perfect opportunity to thank you for supporting the Pride Center. The impact of your support is evident when you look at the numbers. Whether you are a corporate sponsor, a volunteer, a donor, or utilize our programs and services, know that we are deeply grateful for all of you.

AJ MITCHELL

eenage singer-songwriter AJ Mitchell gained attention for his signature pop/R&B sound on Instagram, where he’s attained 1.5 million followers. At four years old, the Bellville, Ill. native started taking piano lessons to be like his musical dad, and by the age of six, he’d written his first song. At 13, he took to social media to share clips of himself singing, starting with his rendition of Jason Derulo’s “Marry Me.” The next year he began posting performances of his tracks, and before he knew it, he had a fan base of over 80K followers. “I started practicing my runs to make sure I had them down,” says the now 17-year-old, whose multifaceted range was highlighted early on in one of his first singles, “Used to Be,” a bittersweet pop/R&B track about a failing relationship he’d penned at the age of 13. The song, which showcases his silky, high tenor, became a crowd favorite during his premier showcase tour, which took him from New York to Los Angeles, where he now resides. He signed to Epic Records in 2018. “My parents always taught me not to procrastinate.” If he had, he might not have gained over 15 million plays on Spotify or performed at the legendary Roxy Theatre on Sunset, the same place where Prince, one of the first artists his parents ever played for him, once jammed. “It was crazy to be up on that stage,” he remembers. “And to see people singing a song that I wrote–it’s the best feeling.” AJ’s new radio-ready single “Girls,” off the EP Hopeful, proves his writing talent is infectious and that he’s out to evoke a specific vibe. “I want people to dance and be able to relate to my music,” he explains. “I want it to feel good.” WWW.CAPITALPRIDECENTER.ORG • 39

JAKE MILLER

A

merican musician Jake Miller progressed from an early party-rap style to sleek, R&B-influenced pop within a decade. Influenced by John Mayer and Macklemore, he steadily honed his vision with yearly releases, from his 2013 debut LP Us Against Them to the close of the decade on 2018’s Silver Lining. Miller first emerged while still a student at the University of Miami, but he got his start in high school, posting videos online from his Weston, Fla., home. In 2011, he self-released his debut EP, Summer Session, and performed his first live gig opening for Snoop Dogg. His second EP, Spotlight, arrived in 2012. After signing a deal with the E1 Music label, he released the Road Less Traveled EP in 2013. That same year, he also unveiled his debut LP, Us Against Them, which incorporated smooth pop hooks, acoustic heart, and Miller’s introspective rapping. Continuing his EP-per-year schedule, he unveiled Dazed and Confused in 2014. It featured appearances from Nikki Flores and Travie McCoy. The feel-good party EP Rumors arrived in 2015. With each release, the Jake Miller sound slowly drifted toward a more R&B-pop-oriented style similar to Nick Jonas or ZAYN. It became fully apparent on his 2016 EP, Overnight, which included the sleek title track. That same year, he embarked on a tour opening for Fifth Harmony. In 2017, the singer self-released his neon-washed sophomore LP, 2:00am in LA, after parting ways with Warner Bros. He also taught himself how to play piano and saxophone. Less than a year later, Miller issued his third full-length, Silver Lining, featuring the single “The Girl That’s Underneath” with Jabbar Hakeem. By 2019, he had signed with RED Music and issued singles “Wait for You” and “Nikes.”
