pridecenter OF THE CAPITAL REGION
Message from the Executive Director, Curran Streett I am so excited to share the Pride Center’s accomplishments for 2012. In addition to our providing longstanding programs and services, this year we strengthened our LGBT Business Alliance, expanded our clinical services to LGBT young people and renovated our most used space—the Rainbow Café! We reach ten counties in the Capital Region connecting thousands of LGBT people to our vital services and educating hundreds of service providers. Our programs reflect the diversity of needs and interests in our community, and we are proud to have grown to have something of interest for everyone. We celebrated our identity, families and community with over 17,000 people in Washington Park at Capital Pride, and featured our community’s most distinguished leaders at our October Gala. As we wind down our 42nd year as the Capital Region’s LGBT center, we proudly look ahead to an even more successful future. This is made possible by our dedicated board of directors, an incredibly passionate and qualified staff and a supported and empowered LGBT community. We look forward to continuing our long tradition of building pride, engaging community and empowering lives. Please enjoy reading about your community’s center!

BUILDING pride
“ I didn’t know who to turn to after Jane passed, and the Pride Center was there. I am so grateful for that.” LENNY, 2012 VINTAGE PRIDE PARTICIPANT
“ Receiving the Joshua Dunning Powell Scholarship was an incredible blessing for me. Coming from a small, conservative town with a troublesome high school experience, the scholarship awarded me the courage to leave the past the past, and look forward to the present with a positive outlook and ability to truly be who I am, to my fullest potential. There is an entire world out there of people who are more accepting than I would have ever experienced without the ability to take my education to a higher level in college.” FRANCHESCA, 2012 JOSHUA DUNNING POWELL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

pridecenter OF THE CAPITAL REGION
Highlights of our 2012 Accomplishments Doubled the number of youth leaders trained and engaged in our Center Youth Action Team. Leaders this year came from schools all across the Capital Region, including Germantown, Colonie, Bethlehem and Albany. They helped our staff provide TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT TO 35 SCHOOLS spanning 10 counties in the Capital Region. STRENGTHENED SUPPORT TO LGBT PEOPLE by launching a comprehensive Case Management program. Serving the most vulnerable in our community, we connect people to employment, education, health and mental health services. Completed a year long renovation project INVESTING IN THE RAINBOW CAFÉ, our oldest program and most used space. ENGAGED OVER 40 LOCAL BUSINESSES through the LGBT Business Alliance, demonstrating the importance of our community in the economy. Launched a clinical support group FOR YOUNG ADULTS TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD offering support in healthy communication, relationships, social interaction and progressive health. Expanded our Vintage Pride program for LGBT older adults. EXTENDED SUPPORT TO HOMEBOUND SENIORS and engaged over 75 people through regular events.

“ I found the Pride Center while looking for resources for my daughter. When I called with questions, they were so welcoming, understanding, and helpful! I take my daughter to youth group here even though it’s a 45 minute drive—the Pride Center’s support (both social and informational) is invaluable to our family!”
“ Working with the youth at the Capital Region Pride Center has been very fulfilling with me. Even though I work with youth on a regular basis as a teacher, it is wonderful to work with LGBTQ youth from all over the Capital Region. These diverse young people remind me to have courage and inspire me to discover resilience in the face of hard times, especially homophobia. This program allows youth to be themselves and express their identity in a safe space. As a Youth Group Facilitator, I feel empowered that I’m making a difference in my community by working with the LGBTQ youth at the Capital Region Pride Center.”
“ I really enjoyed this training—it raised issues about LGBT people I had never considered. I wish this training was mandatory for everyone working with youth. Very well done.”
“ Thank you for keeping our family whole.” …PARTICIPANTS
“ As a part of the Center Youth Program I get the chance to meet other people who want equal rights for everyone just as much as I do. It’s a really good feeling to know that there are people who care, that I’m not standing and fighting for them alone. Thanks to the Center Youth Program, I have made a lot of friends and memories that I will cherish and never forget.” “ For me, Case Management Services at the Pride Center is very consistent, therapeutic, centering, helpful and I look forward to coming here.”
“ At one time, not so long ago, I felt very alone and isolated within the LGBT community and I credit the Pride Center with giving me opportunities to get involved, make friends within the community and feel truly ‘plugged in.’ I have seen what it has done for me and know of the multitude of individuals who have benefited from the Center and its resources.”
“ Your training was outstanding— the best use of my time since I started working here!”
