Our Mission T

he mission of the Pride Center of the Capital Region is to promote the well-being of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-identified people and those affected by discrimination based on gender identity and expression. Based in Albany, the Pride Center has been meeting the diverse needs of LGBTQ people in a ten county region since 1970. We are the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ center in the country. Our programs, both at the Center (332 Hudson Ave in Albany) as well as held throughout the region, meet the health and human service needs of the LGBTQ community as well as educate and advocate for those needs in the broader Capital Region. As the oldest continuously-operating LGBTQ community center in the country, the Pride Center has worked to build a welcoming and empowering community for all people.

Letter From Our President D

ear Pride Center Community: This is an exciting time of the year for the Pride Center and our community at large. Planning is underway for the Pride Celebrations the month of June and for our yearly Gala in October. In addition, many members of our community are working on plans to celebrate World Pride in New York City at the end of June. I would be remiss if I neglected to tell you the celebration is, for me, bittersweet. Every day I am witness to fresh attempts to undermine gains that our community has made. In addition to threats to our hard won successes, there are impediments and obstacles to benefits and rights for our community that continue to remain out of reach. We need to stand and act together. The board and I along with the leadership of the Pride Center remain committed to making sure the board is representative of the community we serve. To that end if you are a young person (under 25), a person of color, and/or a member of the TGNC community and you are interested in serving on the board we would love to have you submit an application. If you are interested but would like to make a commitment to something less demanding, we also could use your services on one of our many committees. You may apply by contacting Martha or myself. Hope to see you at Pride. Cynthia Bott, Ph.D., LCSW

Eat Your Veggies! Patty Delmonico-Schardt MSRD Hannaford Dietitian

M

om said, “Eat your fruits and vegetables.” Many of us grew up with that comment at dinner. This sometimes led to pocketed peas, carrots fed to the dog, or pieces of corn thrown at siblings when no one was looking, Despite that mantra, most of us still aren’t getting the recommended amounts of 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables daily. The average person has a vegetable with dinner and a piece of fruit a day. Excuses range from too busy to prepare, too expensive, don’t’ like them, or don’t know how to cook them. he USDA recommended Food Plate, which replaced the Food Pyramid, recommends that 50% of your plate be filled with these colorful foods. The pros of making half your plate fruits and vegetables are many. You will fill up on these fiber filled food, have less room for other higher caloric ones and a happier gut (think regularity). If we add in all the vitamins, minerals, prebiotics, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties you get from these food groups it is what dietitians call a ”no brainer.” Sound daunting? Here is a list of easy ways to add fruits and vegetables whether using frozen, canned or fresh products. Pick just a few that you can add to your meals daily meals or snacks to improve your health and feel better. Small and easy changes tend to be more permanent.

T

1. Smoothies with fruit or vegetables. 2. Veggie wraps 3. Add fruit to your morning cereal 4. Add vegetables as pizza topping 5. Eat crunchy vegetables with dips 6. Vegetable kabobs 7. Color up your salads 8. Cut up and store your vegetables right after shopping for any easy grab or meal add on 9. Keep nonperishable fruit on the counter or table 10. Puree a fruit as a sauce or topping. 11. Stuff an omelet with vegetables 12. Top a baked potato with vegetables. 13. Grate or shred carrots, zucchini, or spinach and add to dishes (ex. rice, mashed potatoes) 14. Fruit for dessert. 15. Stock your freezer with some of the new frozen vegetable choices. 16. Make salad a main dish; add protein like nuts, beans, hardboiled egg, or tuna. 17. Get some vegetable soup and microwave a cup to add to your meal. 18. Don’t leave the house without grabbing a piece of fruit or two. 19. Add chopped vegetables to your spaghetti sauces, soups or stews. 20. “Sandwich “in fruit/vegetable slices. Add spark to your lunches Give it a try and challenge yourself. Pick one or two easy ways to better health with the bounty of variety and color from these foods .Walk in the produce section of the grocery store and go for it!

very spring high school students prepare for prom. For many, it’s an exciting time to dress up and spend with friends. It’s different for LGBTQ youth. For those questioning their sexuality, prom can be a stressful time. Some youth face discrimination from both their peers and educators. Often times, LGBTQ youth skip social events because of these reasons. For 22 years, The Pride Center has hosted an Alternative Prom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) students. Come as you are! Invite your friends! Anyone ages 13-19 are encouraged to join us for a night of fun, music, dancing, games and food! Questions? The Intern Experience My time at The Pride Center was one for the books.

by Rebecca Giandalia

I am forever grateful for the experience. In my short time interning at The Pride Center I was able to assist people in connecting them to resources, help create and run a support group and much more. My time at The Pride Center has prepared me to go into The Social Work world and gave me knowledge and skills that I will carry forward in my practice. In the course of my internship I assisted individuals through counseling and case management which helped me enhance my communication skills. In addition, I assisted implementing a program, Friendly Neighbor, which connects LGBTQ+ elderly and differently-abled individuals to a peer for support. One of the most amazing things about interning at The Pride Center is the amount of opportunities and flexibility. The Pride Center strives to help people in the LGBTQ+ community in any way they can. In this internship if a need is identified in the community and a program is not in place to help this need one is created. At The Pride Center there is no limit on what we are able to do and this internship allows for endless creativity. During my time here "Happiness" was created which is a support group for parents of Trans youth and takes place the same time as T-talk so it is convenient and accessible for parents. Not many internships are able to create a program and have it be as successful as ours currently is. Helping to co-facilitate this program showed me the importance and connection of program development and the impact it has on the community and individuals and showed me what a positive impact interning at The Pride Center can do.

The Intern Experience by Renee Neddo

Interning at The Pride Center this past year has been an incredible experience. I was

provided with a multitude of opportunities to learn in different areas of social work. The Pride Center is where individual, community and policy work collides. As an ally to members of the LGBTQ+ community, I learned about some of the experiences, struggles and oppressions that individuals face, as well as how to intervene as a social worker. Simultaneously I learned about the inclusivity, advocacy and empowerment that the Pride Center offers to all members of the community. I identified a need in the community for harm reduction services and implemented a program that provides free Narcan to members of the community. I worked one on one with clients in a counseling and case management setting. I was able to promote the greatness of the Pride Center through a community outreach wellness day; bridging health, well-being and community resources together. Thanks to The Pride Center, I was able to embark on a journey of expanding my abilities, identifying my strengths and weakness and finding my professional style, all while working alongside four supportive, dedicated and determined women.

Legal Ease

By Victoria Esposito, Pride Center Board Director With some regularity, our legal system makes huge mistakes that affect a huge population or populations. Today’s column is about one of those mistakes - but also about the system’s recognizing and fixing that mistake. (Disclaimer: this column is purely informational and does not constitute legal advice. All opinions are my own.)

In early January 2014, a married lesbian couple in Brooklyn decided to start a family. 1They were legally married before their son was born2 ; in New York this gives rise to a presumption that both spouses are the child’s parents, regardless of the spouses’ genders. However, not all states or countries recognize same -sex marriage, so the non-gestational mother planned to adopt the child and began the process months before he was born.3 The couple expected the adoption proceeding to be swift and straightforward.4 Instead, however, the judge ruled that the non-gestational mother was legally the boy’s mother already and could not adopt him.5 This was devastating to the family, particularly as they hoped to bring their son to visit family in jurisdictions which do not recognize same -sex marriage.6 It also implicated all manner of rights: what would happen if the gestational mother died, or they divorced? While having both names on the birth certificate presumptively establishes parentage, it does not necessarily confer all the incidents of custody on the non-biological parent, so adoption is highly important under these circumstances. Finally, eight years later, an amendment to the Domestic Relations Law has passed both the Senate and the Assembly. It states simply that “A petition to adopt...where the petitioner’s parentage is legally-recognized under New York law shall not be denied solely on the basis that the petitioner ‘s parentage is already legally -recognized.” 7 This legislation, which has been in process since 2014, specifically cites the Brooklyn incident as its rationale.8 It also notes the “legally precarious” position that same -sex parents may find themselves in when traveling and note that a New York adoption will be universally recognized. While the Governor has yet to sign the bill, it seems likely that he will, and by its own terms it will take effect immediately. Often the law causes people problems. This time, the law also fixed them. James C. McKinley, Jr, “N.Y. Judge Alarms Gay Parents by Finding Marriage Law Negates Need for Adoption.” The New York Times. 28 Jan. 2014. Id. The judge had previously granted numerous adoptions under identical circumstances; she told the New York Times that she believed the only way to treat couples equally is to treat them equally. This is wonderful in theory; in practice it simply ignores a host of problems which same -sex parents must unfortunately navigate.

Letter from Our Executive Director Martha Harvey

2019 MARKS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF STONEWALL What started as a riot in the streets after the NYC police raided the Stonewall

Inn in 1969 set off a social and civil rights movement that continues to this day. It is so vitally important that we take the time to know our history. Without acknowledging the sacrifices that so many in our collective communities have made in the last 50 years, we lose sight of all of the progress that has been achieved. The strength of those who fought so hard against hate, bigotry and persecution 50 years ago remind us to remain strong as we face new obstacles and challenges. With love and compassion in our hearts, we can keep moving forward, together. Now is the perfect opportunity to thank you for supporting the Pride Center. The impact of your support is evident when you look at the numbers. Whether you are a corporate sponsor, a volunteer, a donor, or utilize our programs and services, know that we are deeply grateful for all of you.
