Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting Wednesday, April 8, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Willems made an announcement that she attended a presentation at the Minnesota Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. At that meeting recognition was given to CRWD for exceeding the MIDS, Minimal Impact Design Standards.

Public Comments Ms. Willems requested any public comments. No public comments were made.

Approval of Agenda Ms. Willems asked for any additions or changes to the Agenda. No additions or changes were made.

CAC 15-012 Motion: To approve the CAC April 8, 2015, agenda.

MacDonald/Ulrich Unanimously approved Approval of the March 11, 2015 CAC Minutes Ms. Willems requested any changes or corrections to the minutes. Ms. Swanson noted that she was absent with notice and Ms. Ulrich noted a change on page two.

North and East Metro Groundwater Management Plan, (Glen Champion, DNR)

Ms. Willems introduced Glen Champion with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to share the North & East Metro Groundwater Management Area Plan.

Mr. Champion reviewed the area covered by the management plan. It has been identified that the north and east metro area has a risk for contamination and overuse. The goal of the DNR is to maintain sustainability and proper issuing of permits. By law the DNR has primary responsibility and authority for groundwater management. The plan focuses on what DNR can and will do over the next five years. The action items in the draft plan include:      

Monitoring of water use and ground water resources and make this information more widely available.

Improve DNR’s management of groundwater permits and its participation in municipal water supply planning.

Improve support for better water conservation by all users Improve DNR’s role in reducing groundwater contamination.

Improve DNR’s ability to prevent well interferences and resolve water use conflicts.

Improve DRN’s ability to ensure compliance with groundwater permit requirements.

The plan does not include city management plans. The DNR relies on self-reporting by cities of water usage.

The plan is targeted to high end water usage users such as golf courses Ms. Texer asked if the plan addresses White Bear Lake. Mr. Champion replied that the plan does not address White Bear Lake. Mr. Champion explained that White Bear Lake is showing similar conditions to that from the 1988 drought season. Administrator Doneux asked how this plan would effect CRWD. Mr. Champion replied that this should have minimal effect on CRWD. Mr. Byrne asked if permits include water discharge. Mr. Champion replied that the permits are issued for water usage. The DNR does not monitor the discharge.

The CAC thanked Mr. Champion for sharing the management plan.

CRWD 2010 Watershed Plan Mid-Term Review

Administrator Doneux discussed a special meeting for the CAC on April 29, 2015 at 6:00pm to review the watershed mid-term plan.

CAC Initiatives A) CAC Bylaws Review Ms. Ulrich reviewed edits suggested by the Bylaws subcommittee of Ms. Ulrich and Ms. Willems. The CAC discussed clarifications and edits of the Bylaws. Administrator Doneux recommended the Bylaws be presented to the Board of Managers for review and comment.

Election of Officers

Ms. Willems requested the nomination for two co-chair positions and secretary. According to the by-laws each position is a one year appointment with an election every April.

Ms. Ulrich nominated Ms. Willems to be the Co-Chair. Ms. Willems accepted the nomination. Mr. Duerre made the motion to nominate MacDonald as Co-Chair. Mr. MacDonald accepted the nomination.

CAC 15-015 Motion: To appoint MacDonald and Willems as the Co-Chairs.

Weil/Ulrich Unanimously approved Ms. Willems made the motion to nominate Ulrich as the Secretary. Ms. Ulrich accepted the nomination.

Student Worker

Ms. Kathryn Swanson reviewed that the University of Minnesota offers a student worker program. The idea is that the student worker spends 3 hours a month working with the CAC on a project. The CAC, would provide direction and supervision. Members of the CAC discussed ideas of projects that a student worker could perform. Ms. Swanson will contact someone at the U of M for more information on the student worker program.

The CAC discussed a list of recommended projects available for a proposed student: 1. Translate CAC packet into Mong, Spanish, etc. (Language Student) 2. Meet with community leaders and report back to CAC about opportunities to reach underrepresented target areas 3. Participate on 1 CAC committee — i.e. grants etc 4. Attend a different Watershed’s CAC meeting and report back to the CAC 5. Write an article about the CAC for a local paper 6. Man/women a both at one of our events 7. Man/women a both at the University of Minnesota's activity fair 8. Research current literature on the role of citizen participation in water management — summarize literature and identify things we are doing right and were we could change.

2015 Awards Program

Administrator Doneux reviewed the Blooming St. Paul Awards. CRWD will no longer be providing the staff time to the Blooming St. Paul awards but will continue to provide financial support. Administrator Doneux requested feedback from the CAC on adding an additional award for a project. The CAC discussed adding an additional award. Administrator Doneux will work with Mr. Arbeit and Mr. MacDonald on drafting a new award criteria for review at a future CAC meeting.

Fall CAC “Event” Update

Administrator Doneux has meet with the Freshwater Society. They will be providing a list of potential speakers. Administrator Doneux will share the list as soon as it becomes available.

Project and Program Updates A) 2015 CRWD Events Administrator Doneux reviewed a list of upcoming events with CRWD. A number of events are coming up in May and June that need additional support. Mr. Sanders offered to help at the Landscape Revival from 11:00-2:00.

CAC Observer Update Mr. Duerre attended the March 18th Board of Managers meeting. A discussion took place on chloride runoff.

An update was provided on the Lowertown Ballpark. Manager Reider updated the CAC that there will be weed harvesting this year at Lake McCarrons. Ms. Reider is serving on a subcommittee for the Lafayette Park Stormwater Improvement Plan and engineering proposals are being reviewed. A lease amendment has been approved to expand CRWD’s office. A building committee is continuing to look for a new space.

May 13, 2015 VI. CAC Initiatives A) Student Worker Program

Background At the April CAC meeting the Committee discussed having a student worker from the University of Minnesota work on a project for the District chosen by the Committee. Kathryn Swanson has worked with students at the University of Minnesota on service learning projects and recommended the program. Kathryn volunteered to be the primary contact on behalf of CRWD for the student worker.

Staff contacted the Service Learning Office at the University of Minnesota to get more information about the program. Projects run concurrent to the school year semesters (fall or spring) and the students are expected to conduct 2-3 hours of work per week. Staff and the Committee developed a list of project ideas to have a student work on. CAC members ranked the list of project ideas.

Issues Seven CAC members ranked the list of project ideas which are included in the 2015 CAC Student Worker Project Survey Results table enclosed. The Service Learning Coordinator from the University of Minnesota, Monica Siems McKay will be at the meeting to provide feedback on the list of project ideas and answer questions about the program.

Requested Action Reach consensus with Service Learning Coordinator on project ideas(s) for a fall 2015 student worker.

What Is Service-Learning?

There are many definitions of service-learning. Here at the University of Minnesota, we use the term to describe a teaching method that incorporates community involvement into coursework. This class-related community involvement enhances students' understanding of course materials. While deepening the learning process in this way, students build a sense of civic responsibility. At that same time, they address community-identified needs.

Every year, service-learning on the U of M, Twin Cities campus includes: • • •

approximately 50 undergraduate and graduate courses approximately 20 academic departments approximately 2,000 students!

Support for most U of M service-learning classes is provided by the Community ServiceLearning Center (formerly called the Career and Community Learning Center). Our office in 240 Appleby Hall works with faculty, students, and community partners to coordinate service-learning classes. Service-learning is a form of experiential education that allows students to learn by doing.

Time spent working with a community-based organization becomes part of the students' homework. In service-learning classes, the community serves as a "lived text" for the class—another powerful source of information to complement course readings, lectures, and discussions.

To help students get the most from this, service-learning classes include reflection activities.

Reflection helps students articulate what they've learned in their community work, and connect that to their classroom studies.

Benefits of Service-Learning

Service-learning has potential benefits to everyone involved: students, faculty, and the community.

Are service-learning students different from other volunteers?

Service-learning volunteers are different from other volunteers in various ways. On a basic level, they differ because their work with you is part of a university class. Their time commitment options with you may also be more limited than some volunteers—most service-learning volunteers are expected to work 2 to 3 hours per week during the semester of their service-learning class. Also, because a semester goes by quickly, it's very important that you plug service-learning students into concrete volunteer activities in a timely manner.

The other difference is that there are learning objectives connected to these students' work with you. As a host organization, you are considered a co-educator for these students. (This sets service-learning students apart from other students who may have to complete a certain number of hours to graduate, but whose service is not connected to an academic course.) When you work with service-learning students, we strongly encourage you to learn about what the students are studying in class, and then engage them in reflection activities while they work in your organization.

How do I get connected to service-learning students?

If you haven't discussed this with our staff, that's your first step. Contact us about scheduling a meeting to discuss a service-learning partnership. At that meeting, we'll explain our process to you and provide you with access to the online system we use to place and track service-learning students.

Can I request service-learning students from a specific U of M major?

You can ask, and we can try to accommodate this at times, but we can't guarantee that students from any particular field or major will be available. Our support of service-learning classes comes at the request of individual faculty members, and the service-learning classes offered each semester vary. We do work regularly with faculty and students in 20 or more academic departments, and we strive to make the best possible matches between organizations and students. We will help you as much as we can.

Many U of M classes enroll students from a wide variety of majors. When you do post service-learning positions through us, you can mention that they're ideal for students in specific majors. Also, please let us know if you are interested in working with students from a specific department. We can sometimes recruit new faculty/departments to servicelearning, and it helps if we can tell them they'd be responding to a community-identified need.

What if students contact me individually, not through the online service-learning site?

There are some U of M courses (with a service-learning component) that do not work through us, the Community Service-Learning Center. In most of those classes, faculty place their students at organizations the faculty member is already connected to. But in some

instances, a student may call you and say s/he has a service requirement for a class or an instructor you've never heard of. Whether you decide to work with these students or not is entirely up to you. Consider how their needs fit with yours, and ask these students what their class requires in terms of your approving their hours.

We would appreciate hearing if you receive requests like this. One of the benefits of our work coordinating U of M service-learning is that it helps organizations manage the volume and type of student requests they get. When we can encourage additional faculty to work with us, it may lead to better outcomes for everyone involved—students, faculty, and community organizaitons.

How many hours will service-learning students work?

Typically, service-learning students are required to spend 2 to 3 hours per week at their community organization, for a total of 25 to 30 hours during the semester. However, if your program requires a greater commitment from volunteers—in number of hours per week and/or length of service commitment—you don't need to change your expectations to accommodate students. Clearly state your expectations. Students who can meet those requirements can select your organization with the understanding that they will exceed the service-learning requirement for their course.

How many service-learning students will work with us each semester?

When you provide us with information about the service-learning opportunities you have available each semester, tell us how many students you feel you can supervise effectively, and provide a meaningful experience for. That way we won't exceed your capacity. Students usually have multiple service-learning options to choose from. As they decide which to choose, they will consider location, schedule, type of position, the organization's mission, and their own experience or interests.

We can't guarantee that any students in a class you are partnered with will choose to work with your organization, so if you need a certain number of volunteers to keep your programs operating successfully, we strongly encourage you to recruit beyond U of M service-learning classes.

When does each semester start and end?

Typically, fall semester starts the day after Labor Day and runs through mid-December.

Spring semester starts the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and runs through early May. We always inform our community partners about the specific start and end dates of each semester. You can also find the U's academic calendarhere.

What if service-learning students don't show up, stop coming, or don't complete their hours?

When we're asked this question, we often respond by asking, "What would you do with any other volunteer in this situation?" While a student may have a service-learning requirement for a class, you are not required to work with any particular student. This is one reason we require service-learning students to follow your normal volunteer application and interview

process. That way you can make sure you and the student are a good fit for each other.

If problems arise with a student you have accepted as a volunteer, we ask you to try to resolve those problems first through direct communication with the student. If you are unable to reach the student, unable to resolve the difficulty, or if the student continues the problematic behavior, please contact one of our service-learning coordinators right away.

We are here to help everyone have a successful service-learning experience. We'll work to resolve these situations however we can. We also want to be sure faculty members know about students who don't follow through on their commitments. You are welcome to communicate with faculty directly, or go through us.

If you decide a student is unreliable or otherwise not working out for your organization, you may ask the student not to return, but we do ask that you notify us, so we can help that student find another way to fulfill his/her requirement.

What if my organization can't do on-site reflection?

We understand there are many, many demands on your and your colleagues' time, but we firmly believe that everyone can do on-site reflection. We view it as an important part of your role as a co-educator for service-learning students. Reflection doesn't have to be a formal process. It can be as simple as a brief conversation about what a service-learning student is feeling, observing, and thinking about while s/he is in your organization. Will service-learning students stay with my organization for more than one semester?

Students' schedules change from semester to semester, and many students juggle classes, part- or full-time work, family obligations, and other activities. So it may be difficult for them to think about extending their commitment to you beyond their service-learning course. If you want to encourage service-learning students to stick around after their service-learning class end, consider using the strategies you'd use to retain any volunteer.

Simple steps might make that happens... You can provide a meaningful and rewarding experience. You can make sure the students know their work is valued, appreciated, and an important part of fulfilling your organization's mission. You can remind students about the value of relationships and continuity in your organization's work with clients and community members.

You can also ask students if they know about the Community Engagement Scholars Program, which formally recognizes U of M students who do various types of community involvement work. This can be an incentive for students to continue volunteering. While we don't track how many service-learning students continue at their organizations after their service-learning classes end, about 50% surveyed at the end of each service-learning class say they do plan to continue their volunteer work. So it's definitely worth encouraging them to do so!

I.

PURPOSE AND AUTHORITY The Citizen Advisory Committee is established to advise and assist the Capitol Region Watershed District Board of Managers (Board) with: (a) (b) (c) (d)

District organizational development, planning processes, and program implementation District communications between the citizenry and the Board of Managers Consensus building and conflict resolution Additional roles as jointly determined by the Citizen Advisory Committee and Board of Managers

The Citizen Advisory Committee performs its duties in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 103D.3311

II.

MEMBERSHIP Citizen Advisory Committee members are appointed by the Board of Managers and serve at the pleasure of the Board.

The Citizen Advisory Committee will be composed of a minimum of five members who are District residents, as required by Minnesota Statutes section 103D.331, and a maximum number as required to represent the diverse interests of the District’s communities and neighborhoods. In addition, the Board of Managers may appoint interested and technical persons who are not District residents to the Citizen Advisory Committee. to serve in an ex-officio capacity.

The Board of Managers appointsdetermines length of term for Citizen Advisory Committee membership annually.

III.

MEETINGS Citizen Advisory Committee meetings shall be conducted in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order.

Regular meetings shall be held on the Ssecond Wednesday of each month. Those members present at the prior regularly scheduled meeting may make a variance from this meeting schedule by majority vote. Notice of the date, time, place and proposed agenda of the meeting shall be given at least seven days before the meeting.

Special and/or emergency meetings may be called by the Co-Cchairs, and shall be limited in subject and scope to meet the need for such a meeting. Notice of special and emergency meetings should include the subject and scope of the meeting and be made 24 hours in advance of the meeting by mail, phone, fax, or e-mail.

A quorum to conduct Citizen Advisory Committee business will be the presence of at least five members or a simple majority of the members, whichever is least.

At the discretion of the Co-Cchairs, a subcommittee or taskforce may be appointed to review proposals or to develop recommendations for the Citizen Advisory Committee’s consideration.

The Co-chair may appoint non-members who have expressed an interest in the topic or who have specialized expertise to a subcommittee or taskforce as appropriate. In the event that a regularly scheduled meeting is canceled or if there is not a quorum to conduct business at a regularly scheduled meeting, a subcommittee or taskforce may meet during the time of the

regularly scheduled meeting without providing 24-hour notice.

Prior to deliberation on an issue, a members who feels they have a potential financial conflict of interest shall disclose that information to the Co-Cchair and members. Members may also identify potential conflicts of interest of other members to the Co-Cchair and members. A majority vote of members present will determine whether the conflict of interest is substantial enough to exclude the member from voting on the issue. All conflicts of interest disclosures and the subsequent determination on whether to exclude a member from a vote, shall be noted in the minutes.

All Citizen Advisory Committee meetings shall be public. Public participation at meetings will, to the extent possible, be for the purpose of presenting information or providing comments that were not previously available to the Citizen Advisory Committee.

IV.

OFFICERS Officers shall be elected for a one-year term. Elections shall be held during the regular Citizen Advisory Committee meeting in April. Candidates for office shall have been a Citizen Advisory Committee member for at least three months prior to the election. Officers shall be: Two Co-Cchairs, and Secretary Duties of the officers: (a) The two Co-Cchairs prepare assist in preparing meeting agendas and preside at all regular and special meetings of the Citizen Advisory Committee. The cCo-chairs shall have the authority to appoint individuals to serve on subcommittees and taskforces as appropriate. (b) One of the Co-Cchairs presidesalternate presiding at meetings whenever the other Chair is absent. (c) Secretary administers the paperwork at each meeting, prepares and distributes meeting minutesensures meeting minutes are prepared and distributed, may receives Citizen Advisory Committee members' expense reports and forwards them to the Board of Managers, may handles all Citizen Advisory Committee correspondence, and maintains a Citizen Advisory Committee file of pertinent information.

Officers may delegate their duties to other Citizen Advisory Committee members or to District staff.

Any officer whose Citizen Advisory Committee membership ceases prior to the expiration of his/her term as an officer shall be replaced for the balance of his/her term by a special election of the Citizen Advisory Committee. Such special election shall be held during the second regular meeting of the Citizen Advisory Committee immediately following termination of the officer's membership.

V.

PARTICIPATION To ensure the efficient and effective working of the Citizen Advisory Committee, regular attendance at meetings is necessary.

Accordingly, if a member fails to attend four consecutive (unexcused) regular meetings or fails to attend 8eight of the 12 regular monthly meetings without notice, that member will forfeit his/her Citizen Advisory Committee membership. A member in jeopardy due to lack of attendance (above) shall be notified in the Citizen Advisory Committee minutes and by separate memorandum from the Citizen Advisory Committee to the member that his/her attendance is required at the next regularly scheduled Citizen Advisory Committee meeting to avoid forfeiture of membership.

An absence shall be deemed excused if the member notified the Co-Cchair, another Citizen Advisory Committee member or District staff prior to the meeting. Excused absences shall be noted in the meeting minutes. of the meeting Members of the Citizen Advisory Committee may request a leave of absence from the Citizen Advisory Committee by request in writing sending a letter to the Board of Managers. The Board of Managers may grant a leave of absence for a period of no less than three months and up to a maximum of one year. While a member is on leave of absence, he/shethey shall not be

eligible to vote, and shall not be counted towards quorum.

Members shall communicate their intention to resign in writing to the Citizen Advisory Committee Secretary, who in turn will notify the Citizen Advisory Committee and the Board of Managers.

Advisory Committee members are encouraged to attend Board of Managers' meetings and functions.

VI.

REIMBURSEMENT Citizen Advisory Committee members can be reimbursed for expenses incurred while carrying out the business of the District when such expenses are pre-approved by the Board of Managers. Typical reimbursements will be for travel, lodging, meals, and supplies to attend and/or participate in conferences, workshops, tours, and meetings. Costs incurred in attending regular, special, and emergency meetings of the Citizen Advisory Committee and the Board of Managers are not normally considered reimbursable expenses but can be reimbursed upon decision of the Board of Managers when need is demonstrated.

VII.

AMENDMENTS These by-laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members present at any regular meeting of the whole Citizen Advisory Committee, provided that written notice setting forth in detail the content of the proposed amendment(s) has been presented at the prior regular meeting.

These by-laws shall be reviewed for possible changes or updates by approved motion of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee or Board of Managers.

By-laws and any changes thereto shall be submitted to the Capitol Region Watershed District Board of Managers for comment prior to adoption.

Minnesota Statutes section 103D.331. Watershed District Advisory Committee Subdivision 1. Purpose. The managers must appoint an advisory committee to advise and assist the managers on all matters affecting the interests of the watershed district and make recommendations to the managers on all contemplated projects and improvements in the watershed district.

Subd. 2. Members. (a) The advisory committee consists of at least five members. If practicable, the advisory committee members selected must include a supervisor of a soil and water conservation district, a member of a county board, a member of a sporting organization, and a member of a farm organization. Other advisory committee members may be appointed at the discretion of the managers. The members must be residents of the watershed district and serve at the pleasure of the managers. (b) In addition, the managers may appoint other interested and technical persons who may or may not reside within the watershed district to serve at the pleasure of the managers.

Subd. 3. Expense reimbursement. The managers may reimburse members of the advisory committee for actual traveling and other necessary expenses incurred in the performance of duties in the amount as provided for state employees.

Agenda Item VI) E) Fall CAC “Event” Update List of Possible Moos Family Lecture Series Speaker May 7, 2015 The following are excerpts from a Freshwater Water Society document that listed 34 possible Moos Family Lecture Series speakers. The list has been paired down to the following five speakers that have both the potential for broad general public appear and the most relevance to CRWD Mission. The CAC should suggest speakers from this list to recommend back to the Freshwater Society to determine their interest and availability.

1) Bill Stowe, from the Des Moines Water Works (DMWW).

Before taking his current job, Bill ran the MS4 program for the City of Des Moines. DMWW has filed a lawsuit seeking that 3 upstream county ditch authorities be permitted, much like our MS4 cities are, under the NPDES program. The issues are fascinating and the potential, if they are successful, is staggering. Bill will be the keynote speaker at the National Park Service Mississippi River Forum Workshop: http://www.nps.gov/miss/learn/nature/riverforum.htm. Joined the foundation in 2009 and manages the Mississippi River watershed grant portfolio as part of the freshwater conservation initiative. Moira has more than 18 years experience in wetlands and freshwater conservation and previously managed Mississippi River and Great Lakes programs at the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Moira received her undergraduate degree in environmental science and Russian studies from Brown University and has a Master’s and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Minnesota.

3) Peter Gleick from the Pacific Institute.

Gleick writes and speaks on a wide variety of water subjects, particularly sustainability and climate change.

Dr. Peter Gleick is renowned the world over as a leading expert, innovator, and communicator on water and climate issues. He co-founded and leads the Pacific Institute in Oakland, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012 as one of the most innovative, independent non-governmental organizations in the fields of water and economic and environmental justice and sustainability.

Dr. Gleick’s work has redefined water from the realm of engineers to the world of social justice, sustainability, human rights, and integrated thinking. His influence on the field of water has been long and deep: he developed the first analysis of climate change impacts on water resources, the earliest comprehensive work on water and conflict, and defined basic human needs for water and the human right to water – work that has been used by the UN and in human rights court cases. He pioneered the concept of the “soft path for water,” developed the idea of “peak water,” and has written about the need for a “local water movement.”

4) Chuck Fox, who worked in the EPA in the Clinton administration and was the EPA’s Chesapeake Bay "czar" early in the Obama administration.

He now is working for an NGO trying to save endangered marine life around the world. If we invite Fox it would not be to talk about oceans, but rather about what the EPA can do, and is doing, to clean up Chesapeake Bay and the Everglades, and what the EPA could and should do in the Mississippi River Basin.

Fox was named as the first senior adviser on the Chesapeake Bay and Anacostia River to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson early in March 2009, effectively giving Bay issues a direct conduit to the administrator. That position, dubbed the "Bay czar" by some, put him at the forefront of a transition during which the agency moved from being one of several Bay cleanup partners to being the clear leader-and enforcer-of those efforts. The resulting Bay Total Maximum Daily Load is considered the most comprehensive, far-reaching cleanup plan developed for any water body.

He served as the Assistant Administrator for Water at the US Environmental Protection Agency and as the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Fox also directed the international ocean conservation programs for the Pew Charitable Trusts and served with several conservation organizations including American Rivers, Friends of the Earth and the Environmental Policy Institute.

Fox is viewed as a thoughtful, results-oriented manager with 30 years of experience in the field.

5) Charles Fishman, an investigative journalist who wrote a book titled “The Big Thirst.”

Limited investigation of Fishman suggests his message might be similar to Robert Glennon’s. For example, his book – like one of Glennon’s books – looks at what Las Vegas is doing right in conserving and reusing water.

As a reporter, Charles Fishman has tried to get inside organizations, both familiar and secret, and explain how they work.

In the course of reporting about water to write The Big Thirst, Fishman has stood at the bottom of a halfmillion-gallon sewage tank, sampled water directly from the springs in San Pellegrino, Italy, and Poland Spring, Maine, and carried water on his head for 3 km with a group of Indian villagers.

Fishman’s previous book, the New York Times bestseller The Wal-Mart Effect, was the first to crack open Wal-Mart’s wall of secrecy, and has become the standard for understanding Wal-Mart’s impact on our economy and on how we live. The Economist named it a “book of the year.”

Fishman is a former metro and national reporter for the Washington Post, and was a reporter and editor at the Orlando Sentinel and the News & Observer in Raleigh, NC. Since 1996, he has worked for the innovative business magazine Fast Company. Fishman has won numerous awards, including three times receiving UCLA’s Gerald Loeb Award, the most prestigious award in business journalism.
