In Freemont, California the Pontiac GTO was one of the first muscle cars made in 1964. Rusell Gee, an engine specialist, was the brains behind this street performing car creation since General Motors banned sponsored racing. How did Pontiac come up with the new name? They came up with the name GTO by “stealing” it from Ferrari, not just the name of one of their cars, but one of the greatest Ferraris; the 250 GTO. GTO stands for “gran turismo omologato” which, when translated, means “gran turismo homologate”. This means that only Ferrari could race in “production”.

General Motors Made Four Generations of Pontiac GTOs. The first generation was between 1964-1967. Some of the features it had were a 389 cubic inches (6.4 L) V8 and 400 cubic inches (6.6 L) V8 engine. Another detail about these cars were that they had a wheelbase that was 115.0 inches (2,921mm). Some relatives are: Pontiac Tempest, Pontiac Le Mans, Chevrolet Chevelle and the Buick Special.

The second generation included the 1968 Pontiac GTO. They were made in: Atlanta, Georgia, Freemont, California, and Baltimore, Maryland. Some models were designed as a two door convertible. Others were a two door hardtop and a two door coupe. Another detail about this generation, was the engine’s size was 400 cubic inches (6.6 L) and another models had an engine that was 455 cubic inches (7.5 L). Some relatives are the Pontiac tempest, Pontiac Le Mans, Oldsmobile cutlass, Chevrolet Chevelle and the Buick Special.

Pontiac had a third generation’s production was during 1974 and it was assembled in Los Angeles, California and Willow Run, Michigan. The engine is 350 cubic inches (5.7 L) V8. The platform of these cars is that it has an X-body. Another detail is its wheel base was 111.0 inches (2,819 mm). Some relatives are the Pontiac Ventura, Buick Apollo, Oldsmobile Omega, and the Chevrolet Nova.
