Katie B’s Poems to Ponder

People are like Bananas People are like bananas, Shielded by their distinct peels that make them unique. Some bananas have peels that are bruised or brown on the outside, but when you open them up they are just as good as the perfect yellow bananasmaybe even better. The green bananas, so small and beautiful, will turn out to be delicious yellow bananas some day. But try to open them up and eat them before they're ready and they will taste sour. The best bananas are worth waiting for, and all bananas are worth something. Â

Halloween for a Pumpkin Here I sit, wondering what it will be like, To be a jack-o-lantern on Halloween night, But the stories from other pumpkins I hear, Do nothing to me but make me fear. So I hope it will not be me tonight, As a pumpkin for sale on Halloween night. The first dreaded family I see, Chooses another pumpkin and leaves. But by the time they are long gone, I watch another family come along. The family’s little children see me, And they call their parents with obvious glee, "Let's get this big one and then let’s go!" Oh, no, I am suddenly filled with woe. I'm put in the back of a pickup truck, As we drive away I see I'm out of luck. I see a cat on the porch of their haunted house, Why do I all of the sudden feel like a mouse? I feel a hard, forbidding table,

I try to run away, but I am not able. As the father pulls out a carving knife, I think I've reached the end of my life. The family gathers in one big group, To watch the father as he scoops out my goop. The father makes my side a spooky face And puts a small candle inside my base. I watch the sun set as day turns to night, And I feel the heat from the candle as it gives out light. Now I see that it's better to have a light to shine the way Than to be a slice of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day.

You (inspired by “Miss Rosie by Lucille Clifton) When I watch you Calm and relaxed, Talking to all your friends Like it's the easiest thing in the world To just stand and talk for hours, Or When I watch you, Rushing to gather your things, Doing your homework just before class, Making it to that class just as the bell rings, Claiming to have been there the whole time Or When I watch you, When I'm walking down the hall, When I'm having a bad day, Just the sight of your smile lifts my spirits And I feel happy again, I say When I watch you, Like a flower, slowly growing inside my heart. Starting as a small seed, Then growing, growing, Until you blossom. I notice you, Of all people, Now notice me.
