Poem #1 Life is Like an Onion Life, it is like an onion, Its perfect white skin radiates wonder To all who see it. While the times inside can Be sweet and enjoyable, You will also cry. But this will toughen you Just like old onions Which is why you eat the young ones. Because no one likes tough onions. So in life, you must Take the funny with the serious And the happy with the sad. If you accomplish this, You will not get hardened and tough. You will be likeable. So life, it is like an onion, Because when you get through All the hardships with a smile You will receive A wonderful treat. Just like the flavorful Stuff inside an onion That you eat.
Poem #2
On the Night of Halloween On the night of Halloween, Lone figures stride through the murky darkness Like phantoms returned from the grave. Yet they are joyful children, Delighted at the prospect of the sweet treats that lay before them. Dressed up in various fashions Some goofy, some scary, some funny. Eerie dĂŠcor pops out at them Witches, zombies, skeletons, ghosts, bats. Strange, creepy music echoes all around the silent streets. But all this does not deter the children, They flock to houses in great numbers, To get the lovely candy. The moon illuminates the path before them, But yet some carry flashlights To keep watch for paranormal occurrences. When Halloween is over, The tired children retreat to their homes To gorge themselves On sticky, gooey, delicious candy, On the night of Halloween
Poem #3 The Specter of Death The Specter of Death Is an ever looming shadow On the sunny fields of life It frightens the living. The Specter of Death Beckons people to come Into its cold embrace Forever. The Specter of Death Is an unstoppable force That waits, knowing That the populace is powerless. The Specter of Death Visits people When their life is gone Wherever they may be The Specter of Death Will hunt you down When you grow old and weak He will find you. The Specter of Death Is uncompromising. He never grants extra time To anyone. Where will you be when he finds you? Will you be asleep? Will you be lying injured In a hospital? The Specter of Death Will grab you And haul you away To the shadowy, spectral fields Of death.
Inspiration for poem #1: The inspiration of Life is Like an Onion came from the quote that I came up with last year. I wanted to write a poem about it, so this provided a useful excuse for writing it. Inspiration for poem #2: The inspiration of On the Night of Halloween came from the fact that I spend a lot of time on Halloween every year, and I really enjoy all the décor that people put up about Halloween, such as the ghosts and bats mentioned. However, I don’t think I would have thought of writing a poem on this topic if we hadn’t had it as an assignment. Inspiration for poem #3: The inspiration of The Specter of Death comes from a poem I wrote a long time ago in 3rd grade for a poetry competition that I won. It followed almost the same formatting, but it was about a different topic. I would have never written this poem if it wasn’t for finding that old poem in my desk when I was cleaning it out. I would have written another one, but I wrote this one to remind myself of that poem. The other poem’s title was The Flight of the Lonely Balloon. The topic of The Specter of Death comes from the death of the lonely balloon at the end of the poem.
