THE BIG BELLY BOOK – Seven steps to liking your body
Why should the belly of women preferably be totally flat, when other body parts can be big and voluptuous? Why should the source of life itself, the home of the uterus and digestion, be invisible?
Mageboka – Sju steg mot å like kroppen din 130x205 mm
When journalist and historian Hilde Østby turned 45, she understood that she had been hating her belly for exactly 30 years. This is where the hunt for the origin of the self-contempt started - in neurology, psychology, cultural history and in her own life. Can we find the answer to the riddle in our brain? In the clothing industry? In the Male gaze? On the cover of Fashion Magazines or in the social control between Women? Hilde Østby goes looking for solutions and find surprising answers to the riddle. This book is an anti-dieting book. It is a celebration of life and love, and through seven steps it may even help you to love your body more!

THE WORLD AT THE TIPPING POINT How bad can it get?
70 000 years ago, there existed a species, comprised of scattered populations of a few hundred individuals each, who generally lived peaceful lives in a corner of Africa. What we are doing to the earth, can be registered on a geological timeline showing hundreds of thousands of years. So extensive are the emissions of climate gases and the reduction in biodiversity that we caused, during only a brief moment in the long history of the earth. Dag O. Hessen, professor of biology at the University of Oslo, is not one for mincing
his words. science, not fearmongering, he explains the contemporary state of nature and climate – and how badly things may turn out. The great risk factor is the different feedback loop mechanisms that will intensify the changes. Simultaneously, human culture is constantly changing. Perhaps are we, too, standing at the tipping point? Will we be able to turn this development in time, to avert the worst possible scenarios? This book is a powerful appeal for the need to do more – and to do it quicker. NOMINATED TO THE NORDIC COUNCIL'S ENVIRONMENTAL PRIZE 2020 ‘Give us more books and professors like this! For those looking for a knowledgeable and engaged rendition of the most flammable political and existentially complex problem of our time, The World at the Tipping Point is highly recommended.’ NRK ‘Knowledgeable, nuanced and discursive about the climate crisis.’ DAGBLADET’ Dag O. THE COMPASSIONATE HUMAN The Compassionate Human is a book that will simply turn you into a better person. It is a biologist's optimistic defence for the good in all of us, in these modern times many find dark and disturbing. When talking about human nature, most of us think of the ability to commit heinous and violent acts, to kill or be killed. In The Compassionate Human author and biologist Dag O. Hessen argues that these mechanisms might more often than not inspire and lead us to do good instead of evil.

C – CARBON
An Unauthorized Biography
There are good reasons for writing this book with the simple title of C, which is the first and unauthorised biography of carbon, life's central element. Most of the life processes within and around us involve carbon in one form or another. Carbon in pure form can be both graphite in a pencil, and diamond. It is also the starting point for most of the synthetic materials which pervade modern life. However, the essence of Dag O. Hessen's story is the lifecycle of carbon, the important balance between photosynthesis and cellular respiration, between building and burning.

This book gives us the basis we need for that understanding. It is an informal, wellinformed book written with strong personal commitment by one of Norway's best presenters of research and science. ‘The literary technique is distinctly original. Dag O. VIRUSES ON THE LOOSE Through carefully selected stories, the author shows you what a virus is, what it consists of, how it is transmitted and how it produces disease. Viruses and humans have coexisted forever, so this journey covers biological evolution, our own bodies, historical events, diagnostics, global politics, NORLA genetic material, ethics and biological FOCUS-TITLE warfare. SPRING 2020
Virus på reisefot – En reiseskildring om virus og mennesker 130 x 205 mm / 176 pages
The book is also about vaccines, one of our most important weapons in the war against viruses. Producing vaccines is a science in itself and is based on knowledge of how viruses are constructed and produce disease. In this book, you’ll get to know different kinds of viruses: some of the most common, some that are extremely cunning and some that are so dangerous their fatality rate is close to 100%. Viruses cause contagion by travelling,
just as we do, but their journey doesn’t stop there. The way they produce disease inside us can be viewed as a microscopic travelogue. We shall therefore follow some viruses as they travel through our bodies to reach the cells they both hijack and harm. If you are prepared to face up to your fear of viruses, you’ll discover that knowledge of viruses is extremely helpful. In certain situations, it may help you survive and avoid sicknesses like cancer, immunodeficiency, warts, cold sores, shingles and blindness.

BRAIN TRAPS Never before have we had access to so much information – but are we any the wiser? Quite the contrary, many would say, because we have never been exposed to so many lies. But this isn’t just down to fake news and social media. According to science journalist, Bjørn Vassnes, the most important reason why we are taken in lies in us. Thanks to a brain that often takes instinctive short cuts, and therefore often leads us astray, and various ”thought helpers” – thinking technology that we master too poorly (language, numbers, logic) – we lead ourselves time and time again into the pitfalls of thought. And the new media reality has further increased the pitfalls, making them more difficult to identify.
Tankens fallgruver – En guide for deg som ikke liker å bli lurt 151x226 mm
SELECTED BY NORL A 2020
Vassnes’ book is a 'travel guide' through this landscape. It makes the traps easier to discover and explains the background to their existence. The book is the first to present all types of thought traps in a single overview, but does so in an easily comprehensible way – like a kind of atlas of thought. The topics are illustrated with readily recognisable episodes from everyday life and more spectacular thought traps that the media and wellknown figures have fallen into. It shows how thought traps affect all of today’s most important debates.
Bjørn Vassnes is one of Norway's leading investigative journalists and has won several national and international awards. He took part in starting "Schrodinger's Cat' on NRK TV, has a syndicated science column in Klassekampen and has written several books. Currently, he is on a leave of absence from the University of Bergen, where he works as a media producer.

KINGDOM OF FROST The Cryosphere and Life
The Cryosphere is the name of those parts of the earth that contain frozen water; like snow, ice, permafrost, glaciers – and something that very few has heard of: invisible glaciers. This is a part of the world that most of us only know from afar – with the exception of Norwegians and other Northerners. But we see less and less of it, as the area is shrinking. Bjørn Vassnes, Norway´s leading science journalist and native to the arctic plateau of Finnmarksvidda, take us on a fascinating journey through climate research, biology, cultural history and archaeology. HISTORY OF THE PATH A Journey on Foot
The first thing humans did when they climbed down from the trees of the African savannah, 200,000 years ago, was move about. We were nomadic, we had no concept of residence. We walked, and from that the first footpaths emerged. Footpaths came before everything else, before tools, fire, religions and the formation of society. Footpaths appeared and vanished, and new ones came along; myriads of stories, spun around the earth like the thread in a ball of yarn. I dream about footpaths. How many have I walked? Hundreds, maybe thousands. I remember them all, clearer than almost everything else I’ve seen or experienced, better than people I’ve ever met.
Stiens historie En reise til fots 130x205 mm / 192 pages
Torbjørn Ekelund takes the reader on a personal and fascinating journey through the history of the path, from when the first humans migrated north after the last ice age to the organised hiking trails of our time.
History of the Path is a tale of movement and sense of orientation, migration and shortcuts, about the migration routes of birds and animals, about the landscape's significance to our lives, about our inherited need to move around, and about what we have lost in an age where everyone sits in an office, drives a car and navigates using GPS.
Torbjørn Ekelund (b. 1971) is a writer, author and part owner of the online magazine Harvest. He has earlier published the book The Year in the Forrest – A Micro expedition and The Boy and the Mountain.

THE GIFT OF SPEACH
Talegaven 130 x 205 mm / XXX pages
One cold day in January 1888, the crofter Tollef Arnesen travelled from Røn in Valdres to the city of Hamar with his daughter Raghnild. She could not see, hear or speak but the authorities required the family to ensure that their fourteen-year-old child received an education. It took father and daughter two days to travel by horse-drawn sleigh to Hamar Deaf Institute. Ragnhild was in a pitiful state. She behaved like a wild animal, kicking, biting and scratching anybody who tried to approach her. Elias Hofgård was one of those who did. He became determined to teach the half-wild child to speak. Painstakingly and with considerable inventiveness, he taught her to understand words by reading from his mouth and throat with her fingers. Together they developed an entirely new method. When Ragnhild opened her mouth, it sounded like a miracle.

At the same time, the education of the deaf-blind girl Helen Keller was garnering considerable attention on the other side of the Atlantic. She was several years younger than Ragnhild and could both read and write. But her greatest wish was to speak. America’s leading pedagogues thought that was impossible, even for a ‘miracle child’ like Helen. She became extremely enthusiastic when she learned about the news from Norway. Soon afterwards, she also received instruction using ‘The Hofgaard Method’. Helen Keller became a world-famous author and public speaker. But she never forgot that poor girl and her ingenious teacher. It was a precious debt that bound her to Norway. Ragnhild had given her the gift of speech.
Hilde Diesen (b. 1949) is an artist, illustrator and author. She has written an number of books illustrated with her carachteristic drawings of houses. She has also written several biographies, and been the editor of short story anthologies.

SPERMAGEDDON – Fertility in free fall
Sperm quality in the Western world has decreased by almost 60 percent in less than 40 years. More and more couples are involuntarily childless or struggle to have children. Fertility is declining worldwide. Fine, you might think. There's already too many of us. But the problem is that men with poor sperm also have shorter lives, and suffer more illness and health problems than other men. An equally serious problem is that it doesn't just affect people. The same tendency is being seen among fish, amphibians, insects, birds, reptiles and mammals.

What's to blame for this decline in reproductivity, is there anything we can do to reverse the trend? Will it simply lead to the extinction of humanity and other forms of life?
In this exciting and horribly well-timed fact-book, Niels Christian Geelmuyden shines the spotlight on the current research being done in this field. It's a book that concerns you, and your children and grandchildren, in a way few other books can claim to. ‘Shocking and convincing book about the reproductive crisis.’ FÆDRELANDSVENNEN ‘Spermageddon is the most depressing book you will read this year. WORK PSYCHOLOGY Management is psychology, claim psychologists Carina Carl and Rebekka Egeland. You will always bring your personality with you into your management role and that is where psychology gets interesting – because we humans aren’t as rational as we’d like to think. Every new situation is unique, just as every human being is unique and everyone’s environment is constantly changing. The realisation that times may change but humans don’t mean that everybody should know something about how our brains work, what primary and secondary emotions are, and how relationships affect all communications and every management style. Early relationships are also significant when it comes to how you talk to yourself and manage yourself. And you must manage yourself before you can manage others. Psychology at Work places less importance on the theories and models of organisational psychology than on the development of personality, relationships, communication, life choices and values. In that respect, the book is just as interesting for anybody with a job and a workplace to go to as for managers. Carina Carl is a psychologist working on many platmorms, amongst them the Noia podcast. Rebekka Egeland was Young Manager of the Year in 2018. The two of them are passionately dedicated to explaining psychology to ordinary people in an easyto-grasp way and both have written several books. This is the second book they have written together. WHEN BEING GOOD IS BAD FOR YOU Being good at things isn’t something we are. It’s something we want to be or hope to become. For many people, being good at stuff is a life project. Because no matter how much we achieve or experience, we never feel good, or at least never good enough. Not as long as we can get even better and constantly seek out new areas for improvement. When being good at things becomes so important that it affects our wellbeing and the way we live – that means it’s starting to become unhealthy. The price we pay for always being able to become a slightly better version of ourselves is that we never feel good enough. Young people today are probably the generation most affected by this. No other generation has been so capable and

high-achieving while still feeling so inadequate. There’s nothing wrong with being good as long as it doesn’t reach unhealthy levels. Even so, many young people today seem to be achieving everything and look totally fantastic but still feel worthless on the inside and ugly on the outside. The pressure and stress feel like running to catch a train that has already left the station. In this book Lars Halse Kneppe talks about some of the experiences and ideas he has shared with all the young people who are too good for their own good that he has met in his job as psychologist at sixth-form colleges in Oslo. He offers advice to parents about how they can calm stressed young people – and themselves as well: about how we can help young people to understand that they are good enough, and how they can resist the enormous pressure to constantly become better.
Lars Halse Kneppe is a trained psychologist and journalist. He works as a psychologist at Pedagogiskpsykologisk tjeneste (PPT) and with several high schools in Oslo.

BUT YOU DON’T LOOK SICK But You Don’t Look Sick is an unusual contribution to the debate around a group that is much discussed but rarely heard from: people living with invisible illnesses. When Ragnhild Holmås fell ill with myalgic encephalitis (ME) as a 23-year-old, she had no idea that her struggle against the disease would be overshadowed by her struggle to be believed. To live with an invisible illness is to live with scepticism – from doctors, from social services, from employers; even from friends and family. Over the period of her illness, Ragnhild moves from denial to acceptance and tries to speak openly about being invisibly ill. Using her own story as a starting point, she investigates topics such as Men du ser ikke syk ut stigma, lack of knowledge, language and identity. Her descriptions may strike a chord with sick people and their relatives, who may also draw strength from the book when they encounter prejudices themselves. People who have dealings with the sick person or have an opinion about them may gain a fresh understanding of what they are going through – as well as tips about how to be their best possible ally. The author writes with a self-deprecating sense of humour, interspersed with pain and seriousness, making free use of creative elements, such as an internal dialogue in the format of an SMS exchange, lists and 'prejudice bingo'. The book consists of numerous short vignettes that mirror the limited endurance that results from many chronic diseases.

But don’t underestimate your brain; it is a fantastic machine. And the key to re-discovering your balance, motivation and sense of joy lies in how you use this machine. What you need to know is how your brain functions and what triggers it. That way, you can manipulate your own hormone system with the most wonderful endorphins to sharpen your concentration, calm your nerves and increase your joie de vivre.
Høy på deg sjæl – Endorfin som medisin
To understand how you can find your way to these marvellous feelings, you need to train your brain. Train it so that you can “reprogram” bad habits and make sense of the vast jigsaw puzzle of mood, affect, emotions and feelings. Once you know how your brain works you will get to know yourself better. Then you can choose to truly feel both the difficult and the good emotions that are part of you. They can’t harm you once you know how to trigger the good substances. Learn how you can go from being demotivated to productive, upset to balanced, lacking in concentration to focused. Get high on endorphins and feel better whenever you need to!

A NEW LOOK AT AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES Many who have one or more autoimmune diseases, will hear their doctors say that their diet won’t affect the disease. However, it does! Those are the words by doctors Sofie and Erik Hexeberg, who specialize in treating autoimmune diseases with the help of dietary changes.
Nytt blikk på autoimmun sykdom 151 x 226 mm / 256 pages
You can get rid of chronic inflammation and improve your everyday life with less medication – and maybe even get completely well – by eating antiinflammatory foods. The authors present a new and groundbreaking look at autoimmune diseases and their possible causes. They share the stories of patients who have improved their lives by changing their diets.
The authors propose a model where any food protein could elicit an immune response in a susceptible individual and thereby trigger an autoimmune disease. For instance, coeliac disease is often regarded as a 'model disease' for autoimmune diseases. But as removal of gluten protein from the diet cures the patient, the disease is not truly 'auto'-immune in any sense. The identification of these specific food proteins forms the tailored diet advice to the patient - advice to eliminate specific food proteins from the diet. Additionally, the diet advice in this book is also based on other general anti-inflammatory diet advice. The following illnesses have their own chapters in the book: Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Celiac disease, Type 1 diabetes, Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism), Hashimoto’s disease (hypothyroidism), Rheumatoid arthritis, Multiple sclerosis (MS), Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and Psoriasis. Irritable bowel syndrome is also covered.
Erik Hexeberg and Sofie Hexeberg (b. 1957/1960) Sofie and Erik Hexeberg are physicians, diet experts and writers. I addition to their MD degree they both hold PhD degrees from the University of Bergen in Norway. Erik is a specialist in internal medicine. Together they run Dr. Hexeberg's clinic in Tønsberg and Bærum and are particularly concerned with how patients can improve health through dietary changes.

Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season.
The book covers a whole year, and the photos show Ida and her family in well-known locations in Oslo and eventually at their new home on the island of Engeløya in Nordland, northern Norway.
