Work-integrated Education

Message from the President

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong to have incorporated a mandatory Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component into the undergraduate curriculum. This pioneering initiative was introduced in 2005 to enhance our students’ all-round development and professional competency in light of the ever-changing and increasingly competitive business environment. Over the past decade, the initiative has made considerable progress on various fronts. Internationally, our students can now experience work-based learning in 25 countries, while internship arrangements have been extended to nine locations on the Chinese mainland. Two newly launched mainland schemes offer internship opportunities in Beijing’s Zhongguancun Science Park as well as in companies from different sectors in Shenzhen including banking, property, education, IT and engineering. Last summer, close to 1,500 PolyU students participated in a variety of WIE programmes. This booklet showcases not only their fruitful experiences but also how the University fulfils its promise of “Opening Minds • Shaping the Future”. I encourage you to spread the word and inspire more students to join our WIE programmes next year.

Message from the Dean of Students

Work-Integrated Education has always been an integral part of our students’ education at PolyU. In 2014/15, close to 1,500 PolyU students have taken part in work placements and internships, a significant increase from last year, thanks to the support of Hong Kong, China and international corporates and industries. Continuing with the WIE initiative of the Dean of Students Office in year 2014, the Launch events in Shanghai and Beijing has been successfully held again this year! Each of our 3 Launch events in Shanghai provided PolyU students the rare opportunity to engage with inspirational leaders in China in a personal & intimate setting, to dialogue with students from our partner universities, local working professionals, and PolyU alumni, as well as to receive valuable tips & tools to achieve their future career and life goals. I trust as you read through this book, you will agree with me the vital role that WIE programmes plays in our student’s life at PolyU.

Work-integrated Education

Message from the Director of Careers and Placement Services

Throughout the years, Work-Integrated Education has been pivotal in training students to integrate the knowledge they have acquired and apply it in the real-world working environment. In this respect CAPS has provided a wide range of services in support of WIE, including coordinating WIE, creating placement opportunities, and providing relevant career education and guidance services. The strong support we received and the vast network we have established with our 514 partner companies and organizations worldwide act as a strong foundation for us to bridge our students’ academic learning with industry-specific exposures through the internship programmes we provide across various sectors. Our efforts dedicated for internship programmes in recruitment, job matching, pre-internship training, pre-departure training, teambuilding exercises as well as local firm visits arranged have been impactful as evaluated by employers in equipping our students the core competences required in workplace like work ethics, cultural sensitivity and people skills, paving their way to success in their career development. I am glad to say that the diversity of our WIE programmes strengthens our students’ adaptability and global outlook. The feedback we received from valued employers are encouraging and you can find more heart-touching sharing by students as well as by their workplace supervisors in this publication. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all the industry partners for supporting these meaningful collaborations.

About the Work-Integrated Education Upholding the motto, “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of the mankind”, PolyU puts emphasis on practical training and connecting classroom theory with workplace applications in order to meet the needs of society. Top priority is placed on nurturing all-round students with professional competence, thus all students in our undergraduate degree programmes are required to complete a mandatory Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component as a part of the curricular requirement since 2005. WIE is a work-based learning experience through internship that takes place in a real life work environment which is relevant to the student’s chosen profession. We assist students in fulfilling WIE requirements through offering summer internship opportunities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and from around the globe, from which they learn by taking on various roles in organizations, as well as by observation and reflection. To encourage students to take on a meaningful offshore WIE placement which may not be remunerated, students can apply for Offshore WIE Sponsorship to cover part of the costs incurred such as passage, accommodation, and travel insurance.

Accounting, Banking & Finance

CAI Jiadian, Dawn BBA (Hons) Accounting & Finance China Construction Bank International, Hong Kong The experience of taking an internship in China Construction Bank International was categorically fantastic. I not only applied the financial knowledge that I learnt from school in the workplace, but also gained a deeper understanding of the career in the financial industry, and adopted various new skills. Working in Operations and Settlement Department provided me with a view on how different departments work, and how they coordinate with each other. For example, in Operations Team, we often consulted colleagues in Legal and Compliance Department on specific legal statements; in Settlement Team, we talked to Asset Management Department on issues concerning clients’ information, etc.

10

Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

I have come to understand that in order to achieve the highest efficiency at workplace, the relationship between colleagues, subordinates and supervisors are important. I have also learnt how to conduct efficient communication. For example, how to make sure your counterpart receive your message; how to make data more presentable and easy for clients to understand; how to build up and put all details into consideration to facilitate colleagues' work in the future. Apart from that, taking a break and relaxation are essential because one cannot work with enough energy if they do not get enough sleep. In sum, I have realised how it is like to work in different sections in an investment bank and started to plan my career path.

Evangelino Antonio LOPES MONTEIRO BBA (Hons) Accountancy Bank of Communications Schroder Fund Management Co. Ltd., Shanghai During the six-week internship, I worked as a Stock and Bond Trading Assistant in the Trading department of Bank of Communications Schroder Fund Management Co., Ltd. My duties included verifying trading data before concluding a deal, understanding stock and bond markets, assisting in creating institutional trading accounts, and finalizing trading contracts. My financial terms and my knowledge in the equity market have been significantly enriched after the whole internship. On top of that, I also had the opportunity to participate in meetings which shared the overview of the equity markets.

The experience has helped me to learn and understand more about the current situation of China equity market. I have also learned about the procedure of creating institutional trading accounts, and that of finalizing trading contracts. This experience has deepened my understanding of the policy and procedures required by a financial institution. Throughout this internship, my knowledge in China financial market was well-broadened. I also got to know more local and non-local students from PolyU, whom I might have opportunities to cooperate with in the future. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

Accounting, Banking & Finance

TONG Ching Yan BBA (Hons) Accountancy ShineWing CPA Ltd., Beijing On 27 May, I got on the flight flying to Beijing, as my summer internship was going to start in a few days. I was nervous but somehow excited about the internship because this was the first time that I left home for such a long time. It was also the first time that I could get involved in accounting operation in a professional CPA firm ShineWing Certified Public Accountants. During the six-week internship, I took care of the outsourced finance procedures of a client company. I was responsible for checking invoices, recording entries into the accounting system, recording cash payment to employees and drafting weekly cash payment summary. Although these were routine tasks, any minor mistakes could cause unpredictable consequences. Recalled that once I typed the amount $10,000 as $100,000 and 12

Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

fortunately, I discovered that when I validated my entries. Otherwise, I would have to pay for it. I discovered my strengths and weaknesses in this period of internship. One of my strengths is that I am a self-disciplined person, and I can complete the task on schedule without supervision. On the other hand, I am a quiet and shy person. At the beginning of my internship, I did not talk much to my colleagues, we only communicated on working level. When time passed, we became friends and would even make jokes on others. I am quite proud of what I did in these few weeks. I am now capable of handling the accounting systems, which I learned in the past.

WONG Nga Ting BBA (Hons) Financial Services Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Shanghai I spent six weeks working in the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) in Shanghai. During the internship, I was assigned to different service counters to gain a comprehensive understanding of the operation of a state-owned bank. I spent the first two weeks at the Enterprise Service Counter. I also interned at the Individual Finance Service Counter and the Cash Service Counter. Apart from that, I was also assigned to the lobby for providing customer service to customers.

I was glad that I have been given a valuable chance to learn in this well-known bank. This six weeks’ learning experience has enriched both my soft skills and hard skills. My communication skills were improved a lot via the provision of customer service. Spending six weeks at ICBC allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of myself by knowing my strengths and rooms for improvements. This internship also provided me with the chance to understand more on the banking system and financial market of China. After interning in the banking and financial sector, I am determined to develop my career in a bank or a securities firm after graduation.

Building, Construction and Property

CHEUK Wing Ying BSc (Hons) Environment & Sustainable Development Create Group of Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Xi’an As an intern working in the Green Technology Development Department of a country-wide construction company. I had the opportunity to go on a business trip for a construction project in Henan for two weeks to broaden my horizon. By comparing the floor plans, I had the opportunity to learn about the building structures and master my drawing skills, in which is a very crucial and practical experience for me. Initially, I felt nervous since I had never attempted it before. Luckily, my colleagues were helpful and willing to teach me patiently. Thanks to their kind efforts, my auto-cad skills have been improved. 16

Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

This internship was rewarding and fruitful. It totally changed my perception of being an environmental engineer. In the past, I thought the work of an environmental engineer was only about conducting environmental impact assessment, but now I understand they also monitor construction sites by patrolling around for inspections. It enhances my understanding towards my future career. However, it would not change my determination to be an environmental engineer.

HO Chun Kwan Bsc (Hons) Property Management Narada Real Estate Service Co. Ltd., Hangzhou

In Narada, I worked in two positions, the first one was as a Property Assistant and the second one was as a trainee in the Marketing and Research Centre. At the beginning, I was assigned to be the Property Assistant who handled tenants’ problems via telephone. Then I was transferred to the Marketing and Research Centre and was responsible for the integration and analysis of data related to property transactions in Hangzhou. I was asked to analyze reports concerning different residential projects on a weekly basis. I have recognized my strength which is the ability to complete tasks efficiently. In the Marketing department, I took over the tasks left by a colleague who had recently left the company, which means I had to take all the responsibilities of a full-time staff. It was challenging yet

meaningful to me. I did my best every day and managed to pick up the tasks quickly. The responsibility on my shoulders pushed me to learn faster and faster. After that, I realized how far I can go with my potential as a quick learner. During the final stage of the internship, I was appointed to hand over my tasks to a new internship trainee. There was a sense of satisfaction that my working performance was appreciated and even entitled the chance to hand over work assignments to someone else. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

Building, Construction and Property

LAI Chun Ho, Boyce BBA (Hons) Marketing Hopewell Holding Ltd., Hong Kong This summer, I interned with a team from the Talent Acquisition and Development as well as a team from the Managing Director Office respectively to assist their team members in organizing events, conducting research as well as to serve as a manager of the officer interns. Unlike other internship programmes, the internship programme, called “In Return, included the concept of social responsibility, which was to develop students in different ways while contributing to community. One of the most important responsibilities was to act as a mentor of a high school student who was hired by Hopewell as an intern. I had to assist him in understanding the daily office operations at Hopewell Center and conducting a small research project together. During the mentoring process, I had to share what I have learnt with the student and learnt how to act as a manager.

18

Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

Besides being a mentor of a high school student, I also conducted a number of researches on topics such as the Hong Kong’s market of serviced apartments. Moreover, I

was appointed as a floor plan manager to setup a venue for a talk for 50 people. Apart from that, I was sent to Panda Hotel located in Tsuen Wan to understand how the back office of a hotel was operated. Last but not least, the experience in Hopewell was not only about working but also about learning new things. Through different seminars and events, we were encouraged to understand how other business are being conducted, meet other interns and trainees from other companies and learn and get inspired from experts from different fields.

YEUNG King Nga BSc (Hons) Property Management Overseas living (MM2H) Sdn Bhd, Malaysia During my internship in Penang, Malaysia, I gained solid experience of Property Management and understood better about the industry. I visited several residential estates in preparation for the assignment – Property Data Compilation, in which I was required to analyze and compare several popular units in terms of their sub-sale price, maintenance fee and facilities. Having had limited understanding about the property market in Penang, I did some research from the online platforms. This experience served as an invaluable learning experience in which I captured the essence of marketing in property and identified the area with flourishing property market. Professionals in estate management would possess knowledge to market the properties and screen tenants for owners in a bid to achieve higher resale value eventually.

I also participated and assisted in an exchange programme in which I worked with a team of 25 members who came from diverse backgrounds like Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan. Working in a multi-cultural environment, it is important to be open-minded in order to collaborate effectively. Moreover, it was the first time for me to host a training session, during which I learnt the importance of time management and teamwork.

CHENG Yi Ching BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering China Shanghai Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd., Shanghai After the eight-week internship in the Shanghai Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. - No. 1 Design Institute, I experienced working in a professional manner and was given the opportunity to apply the theories that I learnt in practical projects. Being open-minded and curious, I gained a lot from the senior engineers in the team by observing and asking questions. From the projects I participated in, I realized that team work and communication are crucial in structural design. Given a project with a tight schedule, clear division of labor and

22 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

good communication between architects and engineers are needed to ensure each of the components is designed without errors. I really treasured this learning opportunity. To be a future professional civil engineer, I will focus on studying structural mechanics and designing codes in the rest of my study. Lastly, I would also thank CAPS for giving me this precious opportunity which has broadened my horizon and enriched my working experience.

NG Man Fung BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Cathay Pacific Airways, Thailand This summer, I was glad to work as an Engineering Trainee in Cathay Pacific Airlines, Bangkok station. I handled many transit fights and performed checks on various different types of aircrafts. I even had chances to rotate among different departments to understand the airline operations better.

Gaining knowledge and solid working experience on aircrafts, building good relationships with my colleagues were the greatest accomplishments for me in this internship. I have realized working attitude is important. I have learnt to complete tasks step-by-step and pay attention to safety at work.

After this internship, I have realized many important qualities that are very useful for my future. I have become more responsible and mature as my job may affect many people and leave huge impacts. I have improved my interpersonal skills when connecting with Thai people. I have learnt to be proactive and take the initiative to help others.

As I have decided to join this industry after graduation, I now have a more in-depth picture of the operation of airline stations. Many mechanics of and engineers gave much advice to me and shared with me their career experiences. All of these were very helpful and inspiring. They solidified my passion in airline stations and made my career path clearer. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

NG Yun Sum BEng (Hons) Electronic & Information Engineering Landcom Medical, Xi’an This internship not only allowed me to acquire the knowledge of electronic production, but also made me realize how much preparation I need before graduation in order to build a successful career. I was assigned to upgrade the stethoscope that transmits voice and data through Bluetooth. I researched for related products and technology on the Internet to enrich my knowledge on design. Then I found the necessary electronic components and sought approval from my supervisor. In addition, I wrote the project proposal which included technology introduction and prices of each electronic components from Taobao.

24 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

This internship gave me an opportunity to apply my classroom knowledge of system control and circuit diagram to the working environment. I realize that my learning ability and my time management have been well improved. This experience is very significant and helpful for my future career. I would join this internship again if I could. Not only did I obtain relevant work experience, but I also learnt a lot more about the cultures and lifestyles in Mainland China.

TSIM Hin Fong, Kloris BSc (Hons) Internet and Multimedia Technologies Oticon China, Shanghai During my six-week internship in Shanghai, a PolyU alumnus was assigned as my mentor. I could receive the guidance and inspiration from him. His sincere support was a motivation for me to work and improve. Also, firm visits and networking opportunities provided in this programme are valuable to me as I could explore the business culture and industry trend in China. This programme offered pre-placement trainings and teambuilding activities which could help me to prepare as well as equip myself for the future.

My experience with Oticon is fruitful, which covered updating brochures and designing posters for three brands; shooting the operation of MAICO EroScan at hospital and its post-production; assisting in Oticon App planning and feature and function development, work schedule and the pricing with the App developer. The experience helped shape on my career path greatly. I am interested in developing mobile applications. Learning from this experience, I may consider being an application programmer or a system analyst in the future.

NGAI Wun Sze, Ceci BSc (Hons) Hotel Management The Langham, Melbourne, Australia “If you never try, you will never know.” This is a quote that always motivates me to achieve my goal. I was very fortunate to have won the WIE opportunity to work in Melbourne, and this experience has definitely made me an independent person. The Langham, Melbourne is a 5-star luxury hotel, located in the Central Business District. I worked in the Food & Beverage department and my job duties were to demonstrate Langham‘s 5-star standards through assisting in various banquets and functions. Since the food and beverage department is one of the core businesses in the hotel’s operations, I have a better understanding of how different departments work together. For example, banquets have a close relationship with kitchen, housekeeping, catering and sales

departments. As my colleagues were from different countries, working in a highly diverse environment was also quite challenging at the beginning. I learnt to be proactive when communicating with my colleagues and customers, showing understanding and respect to different cultures. Since I went to Melbourne for my internship alone, and this was my first time to leave Hong Kong for such a long period immersing myself in a foreign environment, this was really a precious chance for me to learn to be independent, broaden my horizon, and understand myself better. I am now one step closer to achieve the goal in developing my career in the hospitality industry after this internship.

CHAU Wang Yu, Michelle BA (Hons) Communication Design Chaptel Hotel Hangzhou, Hangzhou As a branding and visual design intern, I worked on different aspects of the hotel branding, including website, stationery and online promotion, etc. As the hotel was in the phase 2 of its development, I also was involved in the discussion about the branding of the company’s future development. This was my first time as a designer and these 8 weeks gave me a valuable chance to understand myself better. This internship also helped me find my interest: Interactivity. I was very happy that CAPS offered us an opportunity to visit the headquarters of Alibaba in Hangzhou. From the sharing by the HR officer and PolyU alumni working there, I started to realize how the Internet 28 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

industry in the Mainland had rapidly grown in the past few years. I was very much attracted by the company’s working culture and also the chance to create apps that will be used by millions of users. It would be nice if I could really work there. As we stayed in Hangzhou for 2 months, we needed to adapt to the culture and trend there and I was very impressed by the popularity of the mobile applications in Mainland China. Everyone uses mobile apps to get dining coupons, book tickets, call taxi, order food, etc. This is really eye opening experience and I think that the Mainland market has so much potential.

CHANG Lai Man BBA (Hons) Marketing QIDI Technology Exhibition Hotel Co. Ltd., Xi'an “To learn and to apply which echoes to my belief that workplace training are more beneficial to my career development than just classroom learning. Before my internship in Qidi Convention & Exhibition Centre, I thought that marketing was all about event planning, customer services and promotion. I have gained some new insight and learnt new techniques from the professionals during the internship such as E-commerce and B2B marketing skills.

Meeting with potential clients and assisting in event planning and execution not only enhance my understanding of customer needs and marketing trend, but also my self-initiative. In school, we can share workload with groupmates and get advice from tutors and academic advisors. However, we are required to handle duties independently in the real-world environment. My problem solving skills are strengthened after the internship. After the internship, I am more mature, and clear about my career interests. I also learn a lot from the company’s HR manager about the way in addressing my weakness, thus the importance of lifelong education. All the skills acquired from this internship could definitely enhance my employability after graduation.

Hospitality, Leisure and Travel

Kimmi LO BSc (Hons) Hotel Management Grand Park Orchard, Singapore For me, the hardest period of my internship must be the first two weeks when I worked as a telephone operator, but with limited English fluency. I was very upset and extremely stressful. On the one hand, I wanted to go back to my comfort zone and once thought of requesting a transfer to Housekeeping Department. On the other hand, I didn’t want to give up so easily. It is difficult to obtain an internship in Singapore. More importantly, the reason to come to Singapore was to improve my English! So in the end, I decided to stay. I observed, marked down and remembered the frequently-used phrases for answering calls. I had never studied that hard and been that self-motivated

30 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

before. Because I didn’t want to be the one who brought the troubles to colleagues. One day my manager called me to her office when I had worked for 1.5 months. She said, ”Kimmi, your English had really improved a lot.” Also on the same day, my manager praised me in our internal staff briefing that I caught up very fast, and performed very well as a telephone operator. That moment I totally realized the true meaning of "No pain, No gain".

Judy YEUNG BSc (Hons) Hotel Management Grand Park Orchard, Singapore Spending two months working at Grand Park Orchard’s Front Office, I took up three positions: Receptionist, Waitress at Club Lounge and Telephone Operator. From the first day of my internship, I was regarded as a full-time trainee, and more importantly, an adult. Therefore, I had to be responsible for what I did at work. The greatest influence of the experience on my personal growth is that I have become more mindful of my work and daily life. I was more laid-back before the internship because I was always offered with a 'second

chance' to remedy my mistakes. However, there is no tolerance of mistake in the workplace. Working in the front office is never easy. It is physically challenging and emotionally stressful. As a short-term attachment, I think it is meaningful and beneficial to my future career because the hospitality industry is still attractive and fun to me. Through this internship, I could have the hands-on experience with different hotel operations, which helps me understand more about my interests.

CHAN Ka Ho BBA (Hons) Global Supply Chain Management China Unicom Ltd., Nanjing Before joining this internship programme, I hoped to broaden my horizon in China. I was excited about the strong cultural tradition in Nanjing. Other than fulfilling WIE requirement, I thought working in famous companies can improve my practical and interpersonal skills. I enjoyed my time in China Unicom Ltd. very much. I was responsible for maintaining the daily operation of 3G services. Apart from that, my colleagues and I needed to monitor for the quality of the telecome service of Nanjing in the backoffice. I acquired new techniques and knowledge in the telecom industry like the differences between 2G, 3G and LTE networks. I had never been exposed to them

34 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

before going to Nanjing. Going to Nanjing was truly a precious experience helping me achieve my goal. I was glad to join this programme. I have improved my Putonghua and have a better understanding about the China working culture after the internship. I have also learned a lot about Nanjing’s history. This internship has broadened my horizon towards a new field. I realize that my career should not be restricted to logistics industry and I can develop my career in other industry if I am eager to learn new skills. This internship has a huge impact on my future career planning.

HO Hau Ming BEng (Hons) Electronic & Information Engineering Sina.com Technology (China) Co. Ltd., Beijing It was a fruitful opportunity for me to go to Beijing as an intern. During this period, I learnt to be independent and improved my communication skills. In the past, I was weak in socializing with people and it was a challenge for me to make new friends in a short period of time. However, my improved communication skills enabled me to get along with my roommate, teammates and colleagues quickly. I worked in Sina, which is an online media company serving China and the global Chinese communities. I was involved in webpage design and development, and required to communicate well with my colleagues and understand

their requirements. Technically, I developed the webpages by adding interactive elements as well as debugging the programme, and collaborated with colleagues of another team in login and application management. I had visited different places for sightseeing during the weekends like Yi He Yuan and Yuan Min Yuan. And I encountered with lots of cultural differences like the way people crossing the road and traveling in subway which I did not expect. Such experience broadened my horizon and I am looking forward to visiting this city again. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

MOK Man Chun Andrew BSc (Hons) Internet and Multimedia, Minor in Management TechSociety Group, Singapore As a Project Analyst, I was mainly responsible for programming and designing work in support of the company’s education as well as curriculum development. During this internship, I applied skills that I learnt from university such as programming and multimedia. I tried to step out of my comfort zone to do presentation on the company to the public. My communication skills improved a lot and I enjoyed interacting with different people now. I am glad that I could help the company complete different tasks assigned to me. Through the project, I understood

36 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

the company more, and witnessed how it grew at this competitive market. It was a fruitful internship experience in Singapore. I had the chance to experience a very different working culture that encouraged flexible working hours and work-life balance. I visited many start-up companies in Singapore which sparked my interest in starting one myself. The two company co-founders guided me a lot during the internship and made me reflect on my personal goal.

WONG Yu Wai BSc (Hons) Engineering Physics Wiscom System Co. Ltd., Nanjing In this Nanjing internship, I was assigned to Wiscom System Limited Company which is a listed high-tech company in the Mainland China and mainly focuses on electrical power automation and IT services. Its main products include power grid protective relays (The IPACS series relays), supervisory control system and information solution. As an intern in WISCOM, I would like to know more about the daily operations of WISCOM as it is a listed company which owns many patent technologies. I had a chance to visit their engineering department, including R&D and production center. After the visit, I had acquired a better understanding of the operations of WISCOM and the knowledge and skills required in production like programming and circuit design.

I also experienced different workplace culture and lifestyle in the Mainland China that is very helpful for my future career since I might have opportunity to cooperate with mainland partners in future. I received constructive feedback from my supervisor for my self-reflection and further improvement. I also worked in the financial and engineering departments in WISCOM. I prefer working in the business sector as I realized that financial operations are more interesting. Therefore, I must prepare myself well in terms of financial knowledge and this internship really has positive impact on my future career planning.

Logistics, Transportation and Consumer Goods

LAI See Lok BBA (Hons) Global Supply Chain Management OOCL (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., Singapore This summer has definitely helped me find out more about the shipping industry. It was a valuable experience for me to work in this well-known company. It was amazing that I could rotate among different departments including Human Resources among, Operations (Equipment Management and Marine Operations), Sales, Business Development and Customer Service (Transshipment and Inbound). The most enjoyable thing about interning at OOCL was the friendliness and kindness of the staff. Everyone I worked with was so willing to share and teach. Even though I was new to the shipping industry and I had a lot of questions with little technical knowledge, my colleagues would explain everything to me patiently. The working environment was harmonious in general. 40 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

I believe what I have learnt would be helpful when I study related subjects later. Also, the industry sounds interesting and I may consider working in this field after graduation. I also received some career guidance from some colleagues. This helped me get a more wholesome picture of what a shipping company does as well as the respective responsibilities and work in each department. Moreover, the internship let me reflect on my accomplishments, the work culture in Singapore and future career planning.

LOK Ka Chun, Terry BSc (Hons) Logistics Engineering and Management LF Logistics, Shanghai I was placed in the Department of Order Management of Li and Fung Logistics. I was responsible for one of the leading retail fashion brands in America. I needed to familiarize with the working procedures of trading. That was similar to the standard working procedure which I have learnt in class. Moreover, I had to integrate, simplify and review the SOP (standard operation procedure) from different LF customers which include some well-known brands such as sportswear, retail fashion and cosmetics companies. For the SOP work, I needed to review different SOP. They included some flowcharts and graphs which were similar to what I have learnt in class. I needed to integrate their common parts and extract them. Some of the SOP documents only included texts inside so I had to convert it

into flowchart in order to get a whole picture from materials sourcing to product selling in retail stores. The course design of logistics engineering and management mainly focuses on logistics and industrial related knowledge. However, this internship gave me more knowledge about merchandizing. Merchandizing is an important part in the supply chain. I learnt what L/C (letter of credit) is and its types. Also, I have acquired the whole picture from manufacturing to logistics. Every company has its own rule to trade with factories. This is what I have never studied and experienced in PolyU since my major is not about the supply chain. I think it can really help in my future career since I have understood some more merchandizing concepts and logistics knowledge. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

Sutadta CHANPARN BBA (Hons) International Shipping & Transport Logistics The Leader Logistics Co. Ltd., Shanghai When I decided to apply for PolyU Shanghai WIE programme via CAPS during summer school break, I never thought of getting such an unforgettable experience. My internship was at The Leaders Logistics Company with a mission of total customer satisfaction. At the beginning, I found that I had difficulty in communicating with people in the workplace and daily lives, which was an obstacle to overcome. During the internship period, my confidence increased and I developed a sense of responsibility within my team and I have become more mature afterwards. Before departure, I was nervous because I would be away from home for a long time and dealing with tons of research projects assigned to me by the company. 42 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

However, after the first week of my internship, I got familiarized with other students from Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong who were placed in the same company and our friendship was developed. This is an unforgettable experience during my internship. This internship enables me to understand the operation in a logistics company. Such experience guides me to plan ahead for my future career path, and I will make use of my time to study further the areas I am interested in before graduation.

YIN Shiyi, Eleven BEng (Hons) Applied Biology with Biotechnology Plantaze, Serbia Plantaze is the biggest Montenegrin winemaking company and its product Vranac is well-known across the world. Winemaking is a novel industry to me, but common in the Balkans. Here everyone knows a bit about winemaking that it is a common topic across dining table. The working culture in Crna Gora has so much different from Hong Kong. There were strong bondings among employees, for example, during coffee break, they never got bored with the ritual “Turkish Coffee Reading” and that little joyful moments kept the office with a positive atmosphere. During lunch time, a few employees shared a ride together to the markets or for bakery, the short journey was always full of laughs and funny jokes.

Another important idea I gained from this internship is appreciation. I was once on the night shift. In order to prevent grapes from degrading during the making of a high quality white wine, workers had to collect and process grapes in a no sun-light environment, Plantaze’s workers had to work from midnight to sunrise to produce the wonderful Chardonnay. By the time I left, the harvest of Chardonnay had just began. I wished I could have stayed longer in Plantaze to experience the whole wine season, where I could witness different kinds of winemaking processes. This internship filled me with not only professional knowledge in food science industry but also a beautiful journey through the history and culture of Crna Gora.

TSAI Chiu Yi BA (Hons) Chinese & Bilingual Studies, Minor in Japanese Russia Beyond The Headlines, Russia I feel very glad to have the chance of working in the Chinese Department of “Russia Beyond The Headlines. I was responsible for researching and writing news in both English and simplified Chinese regarding the relationship and cooperation between Russia and China. I also needed to participate in the editorial meetings for the content planning of the official website. I made good use of the translation techniques I learned in class, which helped speed up my working process.

I was capable of maintaining good relationships with most of the people around me. When I encountered quarrels or communication problems with people, I always took the initiative to solve the problems with a sincere manner. At work, my supervisors appreciated my language skills and working attitude. I think all these strengths can provide me with some solid foundation for building up my career in the communication industry. The internship provided me with an insight that I should always keep myself updated with current issues around the world and equip myself with good language and communication skills. Since then, I decided to develop my future career in the communication and journalism industry as I enjoyed working in this field a lot.

TSUI Man Hin BBA (Hons) Marketing Blue Ocean Network, Beijing This summer, I worked for the Blue Ocean Network, an international TV station in China. In this internship, I tried a lot of things that I had never imagined before. For example, I had the opportunity to do a voice-over for a TV programme. I thought that it was all about reading fluently and professionally. However, it was way more than just reading. I had to understand the themes of the shows and speak with a suitable tone and pace. Besides, I was asked to be a model for the poster of an event. These incredible experiences, together with the daily process of promotion campaigns, brightened my summer.

Before I went to Beijing, I had doubts about my working ability, and I was afraid of not being able to perform well during the internship in China. After the internship, I have more confidence because now I accomplished something that I had never imagined before. I know I can complete tasks precisely and more efficiently.

For example, I made different teaching products using various softwares, including those for graphic design as well as making 2-D animations to make products more attractive and interactive. I also helped to design the layout, translated the teaching materials and add different effects and animations in the products. 48 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

CHAN Chun Yu BA (Hons) Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies Nanjing Historical Remains Museum of Chinese Modern History, Nanjing This summer, I interned at the Nanjing Presidential Palace. My role was a docent trainee. I was responsible for guiding visitors and amending drafts of the commentary. I kept rehearsing the modified commentary and after months of practice, I learnt the draft off and presented it fluently. I realized that being a docent is not that easy afterwards. As we were inexperienced, the Presidential Palace assigned two experienced senior docents, Ms. Ting and Mr. Wong, to guide us. Under their guidance, I learnt the skills to engage the audience and make my explanation

lively and interesting. It was a precious chance for me to learn from them. This job offered me an excellent opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. After the internship, my interpersonal skills are strengthened, and I can collaborate better with others at work, becoming more gregarious and outgoing. This internship also instilled a sense of responsibility and positive working attitude into my mind. I am grateful to everyone for their help, and I am deeply honored to be a trainee in the Presidential Palace.

HO Sheung Hin, Jimmy BA (Hons) English Studies for the Professions Administrative Service Summer Internship Programme, Hong Kong In the past summer, I was very lucky to be able to participate in the Administrative Service Summer Internship Programme (ASSIP) 2015 organised by the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) of the Hong Kong Government. The internship programme offered many chances for me to interact with Administrative Officers (AO) and to learn from them, which in turn enhanced my understanding towards the Administrative Service. Each intern has been allocated to a Bureau, Department or District Office to serve for at least two months. I was posted to the Central Policy Unit (CPU). In CPU, I was then assigned to serve in the Secretariat to The Commission on

Strategic Development. My duty was to conduct research on some social issues concerning the development of Hong Kong, both current and in the long-run. Apart from that, I also needed to proofread the draft of the translated materials and conducted data search for my mentor. This internship has been a remarkable experience. It enhances my understanding of the Government of Hong Kong and I have a deeper insight into how different branches of the Government have been working for the well-being of Hong Kong citizens. I highly recommend it to students who may be interested in working in the Civil Service as their career in the future. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

POON Suen Yue, Sarah BA (Hons) English Studies for the Professions and BA (Hons) Chinese & Bilingual Studies Legislative Council Secretariat, Hong Kong The programme has tailor-made details for each intern. We are assigned with reference to our major in our undergraduate programme. There was a supervisor for each post who offered exercises for us to follow up and provide feedback on a regular basis. The arrangement was perfect. It certainly had high level of relevancy to our professional development. I am glad to have the opportunity not only to handle official copywriting, but also to communicate with the President, Legislators and Heads of Department. The all-rounded arrangement extends me off the limits to learn more and study more about different public organisations, which are the core of the city that keeps it running on a daily basis. This internship offers me a vivid image of the Legislative Council apart from the descriptions in the news. Not only could I be a better individual in caring about Hong Kong, I also

54 Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

equipped myself in preparation for my future career in the public service sector. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank PolyU and the Legislative Council for their sincere arrangement and hospitality. I believe this is a quality programme that one should grasp their chance and join.

SHI Yuanjing BSc (Hons) Building Engineering & Management Bahçeşehir University, Turkey This internship significantly shaped my values and attitudes in life and broadened my horizon. The time I spent in BAU might be short, but long enough to give me new ideas about computing. It also put my career and future development into perspective. It is my first time to experience a theistic country which has a strong faith in Islam. I was interested to know more about everything including the Quran, Arabic history and

the Ottoman Empire. I tried to remember everything I could and then found them in books with the purpose to tracking the history back to this unique city, the Red Apple. “Welcome to the most inspired city in the world – Istanbul!” I will always remember this slogan since this would not be my last time here.

TIAN Shijia BBA (Hons) Accountancy Beijing Dong Sheng Bo Zhan Technology Development Co. Ltd., Beijing I spent six weeks interning in the Financial Investment Department and the One-Stop Service of the company. During the internship, I was responsible for collecting the financial information from new start-ups. I was also given the opportunity to analyse a part of their financial statements. I felt really lucky for having the chance to access the real financial statements and apply what I have learnt from school to the duties. Through the on-the-job training and real-case study, I learnt more about the evaluation of new business models. The One-Stop Service Centre offered business advisory services to new start-ups, together with services to connect them to the ZhongGuanCun institutions. During the One-Stop Service Centre attachment, I assisted a firm to streamline its reception/customer service procedures,

aiming to help create a more efficient and organized workflow. On top of the business process streamlining, I had the chance to learn the Beijing dialect. My communication skills have been improved after this attachment. As we were the first group of interns being placed in ZhongGuanCun Science Park, we served as the ambassadors to promote Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. My colleagues were all interested in knowing more about Hong Kong and PolyU, and the differences of students between universities in mainland China and Hong Kong. It is a good news to all of us that the Science Park is now committed to a long-term partnership with our University for providing with students more internship opportunities. LAM Mo Lin BBA (Hons) Accountancy Vanke Group, Shenzhen This summer I took the opportunity to have an internship in a property company in Shenzhen – Vanke Group. Vanke group is a listed company with over 100 subsidiaries. The company has been focusing on the property market for the past decade with building construction and property management services as their core businesses. One of the major challenges to me was to communicate in Putonghua and to catch up with their conversations in order to make sure that I was on the same page as they do. In order to be professional, I searched for the correct pronunciation on web before making any phone calls. Vanke Group is an employee-oriented company. I enjoyed

the working environment very much. Besides offering meal allowance and free fruits during tea time, they provided with employees many facilities like gym rooms, running tracks and organized various activities like talks and classes available for all employees that I enjoyed spending my time after work.

LAM Fung Ying BBA (Hons) Accountancy Alln Accounting & Consulting Co. Ltd., Cambodia The accounting and business practices as well as taxation policies in Cambodia are hugely different from those in Hong Kong, and I had never worked on accounting for clients before. Thus, this was a great chance to see the accounting practice in Cambodia, and work with my Cambodian colleagues. This time, I found my leadership potential. I was the one who always communicated with the supervisors of my team about the progress of work and kept close monitoring of the job progress. During the internship, I greatly improved my organizational and communication skills at workplace.

I have learned a lot about business practices in Cambodia, understood the importance of fostering business relationships and picked up the skills in handling confidential document. The skills acquired through my internship are great accomplishments to me that I would never have expected.

WONG Hiu Fung, Jason BSc (Hons) Enterprise Engineering with Management Origin Multilingual, Ireland I spent six-weeks in Dublin, capital of Ireland this summer to pursue my internship in Information Technology. Dublin was said to be the Silicon Valley in Europe and I was lucky enough to take up a role that allowed me to integrate my IT knowledge into the business. My responsibility was to conduct talent and client acquisition in supporting daily recruitment activities using different tools. We used Daxtra Magnet to collect information of talents on LinkedIn. In this sense, I could realize how closely technology and business are linked together in modern society. Apart from this, I had to work with German colleagues which aroused my interest in

Germany and to learn German as my third language. I even want to be an exchange student to Germany for this. Apart from work, I was also proud to be an ambassador of Hong Kong as well as PolyU. People were amazed by the beauty of the skyline across Victoria Harbour when I showed them pictures, but they were more impressed with the Innovation Tower in PolyU that they couldn't believe this building existed in our metropolitan city. I hope I can bring my working and cultural experience from Dublin to Hong Kong and inspire my friends. Work-Integrated Education 2014/15

LEE Oi Ling, Katy BSc (Hons) Food Safety and Technology Agricultural University of Athens, Greece This internship is my first time to work in laboratory. I had many opportunities to practise and develop skills for laboratory work. I was so glad that I could try to tackle the tasks assigned with lots of equipment and facilities, many of which I had never been exposed to in class. It enhanced my competence and I am now more confident in my future job application for the related positions. I had a lot of unforgettable moments during this internship. The most valuable experience is at the time I met trainees from different countries and developed a strong relationship with them. They had a lot to learn from and

inspire me all the time. When communicating with them, I learnt more about the histories, cultures, lifestyles and mindsets of European. I admire their politeness and welcoming demeanour to strangers and really appreciate the way they enjoy lives. But there is no doubt that I encountered difficulties when adapting to Athens. At the beginning, I had problems understanding trainees from other countries as all of us were not English native speakers. It took us some time to find a way to understand each other.

Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Zhejiang XIZI Aviation Industry Co., Ltd It’s my pleasure to recommend a diligent and potential student intern to you – Luk Ka Wai. He was assigned to observe the installation of a new system and record the problems induced. His analysis really astonished me as this project was also a new challenge to our company in terms of aviation. As a student intern, it was really hard for him to do such a detailed analysis. However, he could show a high level of logical thinking in his accumulation of past experience. I believe having such a staff would be a boon to the company! Understanding the exact situation and difficulties within the company, they used their professional knowledge to solve practical problems encountered in their works.
