Message from the President In this increasingly globalized society, internationalization of the University is a key area of focus. Through Work-Integrated Education (WIE), we provide our students with the opportunity for international work experience and exposure to different cultures. PolyU is the first and only tertiary institution in Hong Kong that makes work-based learning a mandatory curriculum requirement. While we wish our students to excel in their academic studies, at the same time we aim to empower them with updated knowledge of their professional fields and with the sensitivity to keep in touch with the needs of society. With this experience, our students would be much more competitive and valuable to future employers, and more likely to succeed as start-up owners.

I am glad to report that more than 440 students participated in a variety of WIE programmes in 17 different countries this past summer. This booklet showcases their stories from around the world. I encourage you to spread the word and inspire more students to join our WIE programme next year.

Message from the Dean of Students Work-Integrated Education has always been an integral part

of our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; education at PolyU. In 2013/14, over 440

students have taken part in work placements and internships, a significant increase from last year, thanks to the support of

Hong Kong, China and international corporates and industries. A new WIE initiative of the Dean of Students Office is Launch. The first-ever Launch events in Shanghai and Beijing over the summer in 2014 were a great success. Each of the ten Launch events provided PolyU students with the rare opportunity to engage with inspirational leaders in China in a personal and

intimate setting, to dialogue with students from our partner universities, local working professionals and PolyU alumni, as

well as to receive valuable tips and tools to achieve their future career and life goals.

Message from the Director of Careers and Placement Services Summer of 2014 has been very fruitful for Work-Integrated Education (WIE). Not only have we been able to achieve a record number of WIE placements internationally, we have also received the most number of commendable feedbacks from valued employers. These are very encouraging both from the students’ and also CAPS’ perspectives as our “Pre-WIE Training”, “Pre-Departure Training” and also “Teambuilding” exercises were designed to equip our students to enter into the employment market with particular emphasis on work ethic, culture and people skills.

CAPS continue to strive for more diverse and international WIE opportunities in the coming summer and hope our students will continue to benefit from taking up these opportunities and enrich their personal and career development which will “Lighten Up Their Future Career”!

About the Work-Integrated Education Upholding the motto, “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of the mankind”, PolyU puts emphasis on practical training and connecting classroom theory with workplace applications in

order to meet the needs of society. Top priority is placed on nurturing all-round students with

professional competence, and thus all students in our undergraduate degree programmes are required to complete a mandatory Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component as a part of the curriculum requirement since 2005.

WIE is a work-based learning experience through internship that takes place in a real life work environment which is relevant to the student’s chosen profession. We assist students in fulfilling WIE requirements through offering summer internship opportunities in Hong Kong, China and

International, during which they learn by taking on various roles in organizations, as well as by observation and reflection.

To encourage students to take on a meaningful offshore WIE placement which may not be

remunerated, students can apply for Offshore WIE Sponsorship to cover part of the costs incurred such as passage, accommodation, and travel insurance.

Connect with Alumni, Explore WIE The “Connect with Alumni, Explore WIE” was first launched in 2013/14, aiming to connect PolyU graduates and students to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical assignments in the workplace. Such connections are proved to be effective in facilitating students’ career planning and development, discovering students’ potentials and talents, as well as promoting the university brand in China’s Job Market. Participating alumni will become students’ mentors and supervisors in the companies offering internship programmes, guiding and inspiring

BEng (Hons) Electronic and Information Engineering J Digital China My internship company, J Digital China, is a fast-moving company with

15 staff members engaged in developing online eCommerce marketing platforms in mainland China.

I was responsible for simple website interface design and programming.

Also, I participated in an online social media marketing project which aims

to build traffic, increase brand awareness and generate sales leads via

popular social media and search engines mainland China, such as Weibo, Weixin, Baidu and Sohu. My greatest accomplishment is setting up a Weibo and Wechat channel called jwaiyou.com which attracted

more than 5,000 fans within a few weeks. During the project, I kept asking Tony, my mentor, for comments and opinions as his ideas are creative and I have learnt a lot from him. He is always far-sighted and focuses on the future. As a student, I think it is important to ask questions and discussed with colleagues on issues about a project. Work-Integrated Education 2013/14

I think it was really a great chance for me to work outside Hong

Kong, to learn and know more about IT techniques and the IT environment. In Shanghai, generally I think collaboration between firms is more common than in Hong Kong.

When there are difficulties and challenges, partnering

firms would try to understand the problems and solve them together.

HUI Yu San, Samuel BA (Hons) Design

Hangzhou Palace Interior Design Co., Ltd Being a design student, I was placed in the design department of Hangzhou Palace Interior Design. The core design team consisted of designers from Italy, Korea and America as well as local designers. Therefore, it was common to hear four languages in the

office if Cantonese is not taken into account. But since English was the common language so we used English the most, even more than Putonghua.

Through working in a design firm, I learnt how design is carried out in practice. In the classroom, we have huge freedom in pursuing

our design projects as there are no clients to deal with. However, the situation could not be more different in practice. The clients will

impose strange demands although the designers thought a design was perfect. There was pressure from cost, which constrained the

designers. I thought what I learnt most was the experience facing

such challenges. So in the future when I am in charge of a design

project, I should think about the client first instead of pushing my own ideas.

From this internship, I understand that the design process is very complicated. Every design project has to pass through

clients, coming up with the design, calculating the costs,

modifying the design to completing the final design. We have to present our ideas and be responsible for the details

at every stage. After working in a real design firm, I now

have a clearer idea of interior design. There is no doubt that the experience is useful for my future design career.

BAUHINIA CUP Outstanding Entrepreneur WIE Programme Jointly organised by CAPS and the Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneurs Association and supported by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office, the first-ever Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur WIE Programme offered students a unique opportunity to experience Chinese business culture firsthand and gain industry-specific knowledge in the award recipientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; companies on the Chinese mainland in summer. This year, PolyU cooperated with Qihoo 360 Technology in Beijing and Shanghai Sansi Technology in Shanghai providing 17 internship opportunities for students.

Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur Scholarships ranging from HKD 1,000 to HKD 3,000 have been awarded to students who have successfully completed this 6-week internship programme with a satisfactory or excellent level of performance.

About the Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur Awards PolyU launched the Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in 1997, which aims at commending the entrepreneurial spirit and successful experience of non-governmental entrepreneurs, establishing role models and enhancing the co-operation between non-governmental enterprises in Hong Kong and

mainland China.

The Awards have been successfully held for eight years with 147

award recipients from around the country. Lead ing figures in

their own fields, recipients had kept up with the times,

demonstrated strong convictions, astute perceptions and

outstanding management skills. Committed to innovation and

competitive and made substantial contributions in terms of jobs

creation, technological innovation and industrial development.

Mr QI Xiangdong has been named a “Top Ten Leading Persons of the Chinese Economy” and “Chinese Internet Economy Figure of the Year”, and is widely recognised as a top corporate leader. He is a leading proponent of the concept of “free security”, providing security products to tens of millions of internet users on mainland China and making Chinese anti-virus software mainstream products in the market. His effort has also made China the first country in the world where all internet users can enjoy free internet security and anti-virus services.

Since establishing Shanghai Sansi Electronic Engineering (Sansi) in 1993, with his scholarly wisdom and entrepreneurial vigour, Mr CHEN Bishou has turned an experimental outfit with a staff of around 20 and a registered capital of RMB 160,000 into the largest hi-tech LED display and LED illuminating products enterprise on the Chinese mainland. The company currently has a total registered capital of more than RMB 200 million and an annual output of more than RMB one billion. BEng (Hons) Product Engineering with Marketing Qihoo 360 Technology Co., Ltd I was very lucky to work as an intern at the Beijing headquarters of Qihoo 360

Technology, a private enterprise where the entrepreneurial spirit abounds. My

colleagues are serious in their work and constantly seeking advancement and efficiency in the projects they are assigned. They are just as determined as their boss in their pursuit of achievement. In todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s society, many aspects of our lives are closely related to the Internet and it is developing rapidly in mainland China. As an IT company, Qihoo 360 faces a lot of competitions. In just six weeksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; time, I learnt about the corporate and work culture in Mainland China, as well as the opportunities brought about by the advancement of science and technology. I believe many of those who have participated in the

manufacturer and supplier of LEDs in China, it is also one of the leading LED companies in the world. In summer 2014, I was very pleased to participate in the Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur WIE programme and to work as an intern at Shanghai Sansi. Apart

from applying classroom knowledge and skills to practical tasks, it was also a profound experience. The company never embarks on a

business expansion without setting clear objectives. Furthermore,

improvements in product technology and quality are of utmost importance. This principle is just as important to everything we do in life; to succeed we need to work hard and upgrade our skills. I will

NANJING WIE Programme Message from Nanjing Coordinator Southeast University has successfully organized ten Mainland WIE Internship Programmes since 2005. After continuous exchange with PolyU, the quality of internship programmes are constantly

being improved. Meanwhile, the programme further promotes cooperation and exchange between the two universities and is well received by students.

In July 2014, altogether 34 students from PolyU and 11 students from Southeast University

participated in the internship programme and their performances deeply impressed the participating companies. Students from the two universities drew on each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strengths and helped each other

during the programme. They also combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, recognized the situation and difficulties faced by the companies and addressed the problems they encountered at work with their professional knowledge. Students greatly valued this internship

opportunity, as none of them arrived late for work or left early despite the hot weather in Nanjing.

They also gave their best to complete the tasks given by the unit they are assigned. The students' hard work, sense of responsibility and willingness to embrace challenges is proof of success of this year's programme.

many opportunities. It was my first time to live

independently and work professionally outside

Hong Kong for more than a month. Not only did I

have to take care of myself, but I also had to adapt

to the working environment in China. This was

surely a challenge to me. While overcoming all these

BA (Hons) Chinese and Bilingual Studies Nanjing Museum After the six-week Nanjing WIE programme, I realized that I was capable of adapting to any new living and working environment easily. For example, the pace of life in Nanjing is slower than that in Hong Kong

and the working culture in the two cities are very different. I was still able to stand on my feet in Nanjing within a short period of time.

BEIJING WIE Programme Message from Beijing Coordinator The 2014 PolyU Mainland WIE Programme was successfully completed. All my colleagues from the Beijing team rejoiced at the large increase in internship opportunities this year. PolyU students have impressed their internship companies with their vitality and enthusiasm shown in their positions. The supervisors all agreed that students were prepared to take the initiative at work. They were ready to embrace challenges, not afraid to ask questions and demonstrated the power of teamwork.

YU Po Man, leader of the team at Sina House, motivated team members to work cooperatively, setting a good example for others. NGAI Kwun Chung actively exchanged ideas in Putonghua with co-workers and was a popular member of the team. FUNG Chun San joined a renowned web portal and was praised by the company for always arriving for work on time despite having to commute a long way to work. Students posted to Blue Ocean Network strived for excellence and those who interned in Yingke Law Firm had a wonderful time in the prairie of Inner Mongolia. YU Yin Tsun and three others attached to China Academy of Building Research were commended for their diligence.

BBA (Hons) Global Supply Chain Management Beijing The Leaders Logistics Co., Ltd What I gained from my WIE experience was not only knowledge of the logistics industry in China but also

something that I would never be able to learn in school: how to serve others. I was inspired by my supervisor, Mr. Li, who was a manager in the company. In China rank is highly important and automatically commands others’ respect. However, Mr. Li did not take advantage of his own high rank for personal gain. On the

contrary, he put his status aside and offered help to his subordinates whenever they need assistance. I was very touched by Mr. Li’s noble gestures. I learnt that being humble is the way to earn people’s respect and that being able to serve others is a blessing.

As a group leader, I was able to demonstrate my leadership skills. Very often, I would take the lead to ask

strangers for direction when my group members and I lost our way during outings on the weekend. On one

occasion one of my group mates was sick, I took the initiative to take good care of her by giving her medication and offering her food. I have learnt how to be a good leader and how to manage a team in this internship.

I believe this will definitely be beneficial for my future career. Serving others not only won the trust and respect

of my group mates, but also the heart of my girlfriend, whom I met during the internship period in Beijing.

Zhong Tai Hong Rui Asset Management Co., Ltd Although I was not as busy as I had expected, it did not stop me from enjoying my internship and my time with my colleagues in the

company. I believed that learning was not and should not be limited to the office setting only. I had learned a lot by different means.

Basically, everything in Beijing was new to me, from the food to the peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifestyles. At first I was not used to the spicy food that most

of the local restaurants served. However, I learnt to be

open-minded which helped me to adapt to the food culture

quickly. Riding the subway in Beijing made me realize that

the MTR in Hong Kong was not crowded at all even during

rush hours. Residing in the capital city for six months was an

eye-opener for me.

I love magic. During the six weeks internship period, I met two

Beijing The Leader Logistics Co., Ltd The students from PolyU started their six-week internship in our company on 8th June 2014. Our company adopted a project-based approach where students divided themselves into research

groups of three or four. They were responsible for analysis and research tasks and each group was

led by a supervisor. After two presentations and one final seminar, the students completed the research tasks successfully which exceeded our expectations.

During the internship, students broadened their horizons and their knowledge in logistics. They had the opportunity to work in the front-line and gained a comprehensive understanding of the actual Work-Integrated Education 2013/14

work in the logistics industry in Mainland China. They were modest, diligent and eager to learn. They

paid special attention to combining theory with practice, and effectively applied the knowledge acquired at University to the actual tasks given. They also listened carefully to the seniors and their

respective supervisors. The students demonstrated a strong enthusiasm for learning, an ability to observe and learn from experience and to think independently. They are capable of overcoming

difficulties at work and achieved remarkable growth in dealing with the challenges in the workplace.

SHANGHAI WIE Programme Message from Shanghai Coordinator The 2014 Shanghai WIE programme was a success. The Shanghai team is overjoyed by the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; achievements. This year we saw the strongest growth in overall internship opportunities. The efficiency at

work, effectiveness in communication and resourcefulness of staff members at CAPS contributed to the excellent results.

HUANG Yuchen, leader of the Banking and Finance team, showed outstanding leadership skills and the

team cooperated well. As a result, her team performed superbly and received a lot of commendation from

the internship unit. The Leader Logistics of Shanghai recruited the largest number of interns and though

the company is located the furthest, none of the students complained about the long commute. The

company management and the supervisors were most satisfied with their performance and welcome

students to return to work there. In particular, the twelve foreign students who participated in the

programme highlighted the international outlook of PolyU students, their open-mindedness to cultural diversity and ability to work as a team. PolyU students also benefited greatly from the bilingual proficiency

of Singaporean students, solid academic performance of Russian students, Eurasian cultural characteristics of Turkish students, and affinity to Chinese culture of Korean and Thai students.

I was an assistant for the Advertisement Planning Team, our function was to

facilitate the work processes of other teams and to learn the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operation.

I feel it is difficult to fully understand what a certain career entails until you actually work in the position. After taking part in the internship, I was able to find out more about working as an IT professional. Moreover, I found that I would like to pursue a career in the IT field. Being an intern helped me to clarify my future career path. Also, the IT industry is competitive. Accumulating project experience will help me become a professional consultant in the future.

Another benefit of the internship is that I was able to network in IT industry. I tried my best in my assigned position and hope I have made a good impression. I learned that in the workplace your professional network is just as important as your knowledge. FUNG Pik Yin BBA (Hons) Marketing Iiin Shang Hai The office is located in a business district which was transformed from an old

industrial area with large numbers of factory buildings into different types of

work spaces. In the first two weeks of my internship, I worked in the gallery

exhibiting art works by young artists. Then, I was rotated to the head office

where I was tasked with ad-hoc and administrative work. Also, I assisted my supervisor to prepare presentation materials and edit photos.

I have become more independent after this experience. Working in a city far from

Hong Kong, I have to face all problems and deal with them by myself. These range

from personal daily needs to problems at work. It was really an excellent chance for

me to learn. I used to think that I would not be able to solve problems by myself, but after this internship, I am confident and prepared to try new things.

This experience means a lot to my future career. As a marketing student, I should not just focus on marketing theories, but also skills and techniques such as photo taking and video editing. If you are knowledgeable about the production process of an advertisement, you can create more realistic marketing campaigns. Working in an advertising company requires creativity and administration skills as well. different from how Hong Kong people perceive it. BBA (Hons) Financial Services China Merchants Bank I interned at the Chuanbei sub-branch of China Merchants Bank which is

described as a “high street bank”. During the first two weeks of my

internship, I was assigned to the Retail Banking Department as a Lobby Assistant. I had to guide people to the correct counter, maintain order in the lobby, identify consumers’ service requirements and recommend different services to clients. In the next two weeks, I was assigned to the accounting department. I had to deal with receipts and put them into the designated boxes using an electronic receipt system, so that every company can collect their own receipts through the system easily instead of waiting at the counter. Since the transactions are confidential, information will leak

out if a receipt is collected by someone other than the recipient of the deposit.

Therefore, I learnt that even though a task seems simple, we need to understand the rationale behind it and handle the information with patience as well as care.

Before the internship, I thought my outgoing personality would make me suitable for customer

services positions. However, I found that patience is even more important after this internship. Sometimes, a customer may appear suddenly and ask me many questions. It is difficult to Work-Integrated Education 2013/14

handle all their requests at the same time but you still have to be patient when dealing with them.

To conclude, the first two weeks of this internship has helped me to

understand the structure of this company and the different functions of

each department. The last two weeks gave me the opportunity to

understand the various aspects of the banking job. I really appreciate

my colleagues who have not only taught me practical knowledge of the operation of a bank but also given me wonderful memories.

China Merchants Securities During my internship, I conducted research about the differences in wealth management systems between banks in Hong Kong and Shanghai. I discovered that the system in

China is vastly different from that in Hong Kong. For instance, before introducing a new wealth management product, banks

in China have to submit a report to the China Banking

Regulatory Commission for approval. By contrast, Hong Kong does not have this requirement.

After conducting the research, I obtained a lot of financial knowledge because I had to read myriads of information

about the Chinese financial market, such as the regulations

and related facts. I do believe what I have learnt in this project

can be transferred to my future workplace since many financial institutions are now targeting the China market.

I also did some financial analysis during my internship. This has been an

excellent experience, and I could make good use of what I have learnt in my study and apply the knowledge to the workplace. In this task, the investment advisor asked me to calculate the correlation between different stocks with a

market portfolio so he could utilise these data to provide hedging advice to However, I believe what we learnt in university will allow us to absorb professional knowledge in the relevant sector, which will be useful one day.

Finally, the training in Shanghai Bloomberg is valuable. I learnt basic knowledge of Bloomberg machineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operating system, which has greatly

broadened my horizons. In summary, this internship has been a precious and rewarding experience.

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Hydron Unipress To say that my IAESTE internship in Poland was an eye-opening experience would be an understatement.

The company I worked for is Hydron Unipress. My role as a

Mechanical Design intern was to create CAD drawings for the numerous components of press machines which are then used as references for future machines and to produce operation manuals for customers. Another duty was to create engineering drawings, which is very important for technical workers as they need to refer to the exact drawings to create parts for the press machines. I was given the job of measuring existing parts and used the CAD software to

create 3D models and then the drawings. I had to learn a new software used by the company and by the end of the internship I became proficient with it. I believe this experience will have a great impact on my future career prospects.

Needless to say, the experience of living by myself has taught me more

than learning from a teacher in a classroom. Having

stayed in a dorm with a roommate thousands of

kilometers from home has certainly taught me skills

and helped me become a more independent

person. I am also proud to have put in efforts to learn

the local languages as well as cultures. I would be

very happy to join an IAESTE internship again as it

really is a fast track to learn.

LAW Wing Ting, Aki

BEng (Hons) Product Engineering with Marketing EUROVIA Services, s.r.o. This year I spent my summer in Pilsen, Czech Republic for my internship. I worked at EUROVIA Services, a leading construction company in the country. I worked as a trainee in one of the

biggest quarries in the Czech Republic, Litice Quarry. The experience of visiting a mine in full mining gear is all new to me.

In these eight weeks, I had a rare chance to observe the mining industry at close quarters. My main task was to produce a proposal for the company and to examine the best way to work

with the spilite from another source in their own quarry with technological, logistical, safety and economic consideration. My internship started with a safety lesson and two safety tests

followed by meetings with different specialists from various departments. I was accompanied by my supervisor and a

production engineer to visit the quarry site to familiarize myself with the mining operation. I also spent three days with the technicians in a quarry laboratory to learn about quality control.

Stepping out of the comfort zone was a challenge but the experience has broadened my horizons and influenced my mature and all-rounded person.

Another point to note is that the experience has enhanced

my self-reliance and confidence. During this internship, I traveled alone on the weekends which

helped me understand myself better. This WIE experience has definitely enriched my university life.

MA Tsz Hin, Matthew

BEng (Hons) Transportation Systems Engineering Broadarski Institut My internship was a six-week work placement in Zagreb, Croatia. I worked

in Brodarski Institut which is a research organization in applied technical

sciences in the fields of maritime and green technologies. My role as an

intern in the department of automation, a solution partner of Siemens was to

analyze the hydro turbine control and frequency control of power systems. I

carried out research on the structures of hydropower plants and mechanism of turbines generating electricity through the utilization of potential energy.

This internship has been an opportunity to apply my knowledge in an engineering setting, as well as develop communication, administration and practical engineering skills through work. I learnt to work autonomously with minimal

supervision and I was able to get along well with others at work as well as in social situations. I also worked with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Throughout the internship, I met a lot of people from different parts of the world. I got a roommate from Poland and I met trainees from India, Scotland, England and Macedonia. I

was also reunited with my Croatian friend studying in the

United States, whom I met her as an exchange student in PolyU a year ago. Exposure to Croatian work practice has been an invaluable experience.

HO Ping Luen, David BSc (Hons) Chemical Technology University of Belgrade I was offered an overseas internship opportunity in Belgrade, Serbia in the

summer. I worked in the Technology and Metallurgy Faculty of the

University of Belgrade. Before I arrive in Serbia, I had wanted to experience

the differences in the chemistry research development and the working

environment in research laboratory between Serbia and Hong Kong as Hong

Kong has been regarded as one of the most stressful cities in the world. I also

heard that the scientific research in the Europe is well-supported and funded by governments and companies.

I was responsible for data collection, materials characterization

by spectroscopy, experiments setting and glassware cleaning in

research experiments. I also had to hand in reports after each

research field work. I acquired a lot of skills and knowledge from

work, as well as the professors and my colleagues. I learnt and

experienced much more than what I contributed during the

internship. I really appreciate the opportunity provided by the faculty.

Similar to its work culture, life in Serbia is relaxing. People in the city

love to do things slowly. Most shops are closed on the weekend except some cafes and bars. Families and friends would spend their leisure much more relaxed compared with cosmopolitan cities like Hong Kong. In the first few weeks in Belgrade, I did everything in a hurry and failed to notice the charm of the city. It was not until I learnt to relax that I was able to appreciate the beauty of taking things slowly.

BA (Hons) Chinese and Bilingual Studies Singapore Institute of International Affairs The Singapore Institute of International Affairs is an independent organization

founded in 1961. Registered as a membership based society, it is dedicated to

research, analysis and discussion of regional and international issues with an

aim to make Singapore a more cosmopolitan and global society.

My greatest accomplishment was to have taken part in organizing the 7th

ASEAN and Asia Forum which was a full-day event. Many business leaders

and industry experts were invited to exchange ideas on the topics of politics,

the economy and other challenges faced by ASEAN countries and other

emerging markets. We were honoured to have Minister U Soe Thane from

Myanmar and Mr. John Tsang, Financial Secretary of HKSAR, as keynote

speakers. I was so proud to have played a role in organizing this forum

because it was one of the biggest held in an ASEAN country and gained

extensive media exposure. Channel News Asia broadcasted the entire event

exclusively. My role in this event was to prepare the programmes logistics and

This internship has provided me with insights into news and events in ASEAN

countries. In the past, I was not interested in international news as I thought they were irrelevant to me, but after the internship the concept of â&#x20AC;&#x153;global citizenâ&#x20AC;? has been implanted in my mind. As a

global citizen, I have the responsibility to care not

only about my own country, but also what is

happening around the world.

BBA (Hons) International Shipping and Transportation Logistics

Dairy Farm International Holdings Limited In summer, I came alone to Singapore for a two-month internship

with Cold Storage which is owned by Dairy Farm. The experience

was life-changing as well as inspiring. I believe I have grown after these two months.

Working in the logistics section, I was able to observe the daily

operations of a distribution centre and daily delivery processes to

local supermarkets, convenience stores and health and beauty stores. In order to learn and observe, I took part in planning trips,

followed drivers to deliver stocks to stores, handled complaints

from stores, investigated the discrepancies of stocks in the

distribution centre, etc. I was a project member of the new RF loading system assisting in designing the standard operations

procedures (SOP) and participated in the User Acceptance Test (UAT) of the system. I was also involved in an ad-hoc

project â&#x20AC;&#x153;Installation of cameras for cargo security in trucksâ&#x20AC;? and responsible for gathering quotations from local vendors.

This was the second time I have participated in the

enrich and improve myself in all aspects. The two months

were memorable and I celebrated my 21st birthday in

Singapore with my colleagues and some friends. I felt the

people I met there had a lot of goodwill. I wish I could

have stayed in the company longer and explored more of

Singapore. It was a remarkable and influential time in my

life and it was very helpful to my future career.

BSc (Hons) Applied Biology with Biotechnology Bahçeşehir University My internship with the Department of Applied Science of Bahçeşehir University (BAU) this summer has been an invaluable experience. I was so

grateful that I was given this amazing opportunity which has broadened my horizons.

BAU is a private university located at the European side of Istanbul, the

largest city in Turkey. During the internship, I worked as a Research Assistant in the Genetics and Bioinformatics Laboratory under the supervision of an Associate Professor in the Applied Science Department. I was involved in a science project which focused on bacterial transformation. Besides this project, I also helped another professor who specializes in Bioinformatics to study the differentially expressed genes in U2OS cells which were TWEAK treated and untreated every 24 hours. Bioinformatics is an area

that is totally new to me, but I learnt it has a great impact in the world of biology as it allows researchers to integrate and interpret the data collected from different experiments and extract important information from them. Bioinformatics is becoming more popular and influential in the field of biology.

YU Cheuk Ying

BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile (Marketing and Merchandising) Forward Sportswear This summer, I went to Moscow, Russia for my internship and spent two

months in the city. I worked in Forward Sportswear, which is a Russian

sportswear brand which offers high quality sportswear and equipment to

professional sportsmen and women. It is also the official supplier for a

number of Russian national sports teams.

My greatest accomplishment during this internship was producing a

visual merchandising manual which evaluates and gives suggestions

about the layout and display of products for this company. I had to study

the current layout and product display of its retail stores, point out its

limitations and provide suggestions for improvement. Although I had

studied fashion retail operation management, it was my first time

making a real visual merchandising proposal. It was a very interesting

but challenging task as it needed both analytical skills and creativity.

The work culture in Russia is quite different from that in Hong Kong. In

Hong Kong, office hours generally begin at 8 or 9 in the morning, but

in Russia, some of the offices open at 10 am.

This overseas internship has increased my understanding of Russia

and greatly broadened my horizons. It also helped me develop a

strong sense of team work. I went to Moscow with six other students

from different departments. We did not know each other initially but

we gradually learnt together and worked as a team. We helped each

other and developed great friendship during the internship. The time

spent with them in Moscow was awesome and unforgettable.

BBA (Hons) Financial Services Chin.ru Trading House In Chin-Ru, I was assigned to the finance department with around seven

employees. My major duties were to conduct research on different areas of the

Chinese trading businesses and to produce corresponding reports and analysis.

My first task focused on the comparison between China and Hong Kong tax

system, I have produced a ten pages long report which analysed the differences between two taxation systems. My second task was to conduct research about letter of credit, financial reporting criteria and value-added tax in

China. I spent around one week on the reports and gained an in-depth

understanding of the relationship between trading and taxation system.

My third project was one of my favorites, as well as the most impressive

assignment in this internship. I was required to prepare a report

regarding the trading statistics between China and Russia from 2008 to

2014. I had to extract the statistics from the government website, to conduct a trend analysis and to give recommendations.

After the internship, I have aroused my interest in international trading. I boring business. Now, I have a great depth of knowledge

about

Time flies, my internship as a Human Resources Intern at Grand

Hyatt Singapore has come to an end. During these ten weeks, the

experience was memorable and I had a productive summer

holiday. When I first applied for this overseas internship, I had

hoped to work with people from different cultures and to find out

about my strengths and weaknesses so that I can better equip myself for my remaining university life.

My job duties were to assist the training and personnel department in

daily operations such as organizing and maintaining associate activities,

producing corresponding notices or making amendments, and assisting

in the daily recruitment process and recruitment fairs. Participating in

these events has made me understand the importance of the HR department in a company and its job nature.

The person I admired most in the company was my supervisor Ms Mildred

LAU. She is an Assistant Training Manager who was always cheerful and

willing to share with me and teach me new things. I learnt that there will

always be a way if you are willing to try new things and accept challenges.

She has been posted to Grand Hyatt Hotels in other regions such as China,

where the job scope and living environment are different. Her willingness to try new things has contributed to her success in her career.

After living in Singapore for more than two months, I was starting to get used to its diverse culture. I was very proud to be an ambassador for Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Berlin The mission of the HKETOSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Berlin office is to represent the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of

the People's Republic of China in commercial and other

economic and trade matters in eight countries in Central

and Eastern Europe. Its core responsibility is to promote Hong Kong's trade and economic interests and explain the HKSAR Government's policies.

I spent the first half of the internship in the Investment Promotion Unit which is responsible for inward investment

promotion. My duties were to assist in the preparation of

presentation materials and carry out researches when the team received

enquiries from local investors or companies. Moreover, I also helped in organizing several trade promotion events.

In the second half of my internship, I was sent to the Commercial and Public Relations Unit which is responsible for the monitoring of the economic conditions in Central and Eastern Europe as well as organizing

public relations activities, such as Hong Kong Film Festival, with the aim of promoting Hong Kongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culture to Europeans. I was responsible for

for the officeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s internal strategic planning. Furthermore, I also took part in

organizing public relations events and assisted in the preparation of newsletters before and after the events.

I truly appreciated the confidence and trust the team heads and colleagues have placed on me by giving me the chance to work on

BBA (Hons) Management Beijing Office, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region I have never had a more meaningful summer before 2014. When I was

offered an internship in HKSARâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beijing Office this summer, I grasped

the chance to work there. This was my first internship so it was both

exciting and very challenging.

The Beijing Office was formally set up under the Basic Law of the HKSAR on

March 4, 1999. Its main functions include further enhancing HKSAR

Government's liaison and communication with the various branches and

departments of the Central Government, facilitating business exchange and

co-operation, promoting Hong Kong to residents of the Mainland, processing

applications for entry and providing practical assistance to Hong Kong

residents in distress on the Mainland.

I was excited to have the opportunity to work in different divisions. My

colleagues never underestimated our abilities and they were willing to assign us

some important responsibilities. We often had the opportunity to communicate

with students studying in Beijing. The Beijing Office was very kind to arrange

meetings and seminars for us so that we could know more about their lives in

Beijing. After the internship, I felt I have become more mature and independent. My most memorable experience was in the Immigration Division. Since joining

a disciplined service has always been my dream, working in the Immigration

Division allowed me to know more about their daily work, like issuing visas and

helping Hong Kong citizens who need assistance in Northern China. This experience will definitely be an advantage when I apply for a position with the disciplined service after graduation.

BSc (Hons) Enterprise Information Systems Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto The Chinese cultural centre is built for the residents of the Greater

Toronto area which acts as a bridge between the Chinese Canadian community and other communities. The centre engages with the

public communities through organizing cultural events, hosting leisure classes and renting out its theatre and stadium facilities.

I was assigned with three IT projects, which are replacing the old

computers, setting up the Wi-Fi and designing the Centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

webpages. I faced obstacles when I began my projects. Since my major is Enterprise Information Systems, hardware is completely new

to me. In the first week, I was very frustrated because I was stuck in the first stage of my project and made no progress. Fortunately,

everything went smoothly after many trials and I was able to continue on to the next stage of my project.

Since Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto is a non-profit and

non-political organization, most of their projects were done by

volunteers. There were times when I faced challenges at

work and there were no volunteers around. At such moment,

I have applied my problem solving skills to overcome the

approaches instead of immediately asking someone for help.

I have become more independent after this internship. Since I

do not know anyone in Canada, I have learnt how to take care

of myself. This was the first time I have been away from my

family for a long period and living in a foreign country. I did not

know how to cook before I came to Canada, now I enjoy cooking

and my friends said my cooking skills have improved a lot.

Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation My duties and responsibilities at Yee Hong Community Wellness

Foundation were slightly different from those of other interns. I spent

more time producing press releases and my work was published in a

local magazine. Also, to cater to the needs of the Chinese community,

I had to translate different interview articles of Yee Hong elders from

English into Chinese. I learnt a lot about their struggles during WWII, cultural differences and racial discrimination from their stories.

My greatest accomplishment in this internship was taking a leading role

in organizing a birthday celebration for the elders aged 90 and above living in Yee Hong. The event was organized jointly by interns

from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong

Baptist University. We produced a proposal and planned every

detail of the event. Since the Canadian government issues

congratulation certificates to elders who are aged 90 or above,

contacting the relevant government department was one of the

most important tasks for us. We completed the task efficiently.

I wish to help people in need using my knowledge. I believe

studying for a BBA is not only about making money but would allow me to contribute to the society. During my internship, I worked in different areas and realised that public relations and promotion are very important for fundraising. Staging different events for the elders have made them happy and enriched their lives. Because of these experiences at Yee Hong, I plan to work for a non-profit organization in marketing and public relations in the future.
