seaside guide Publisher Robert B. Roden

Summer is finally here!!! If you are reading this on the East Coast, you will understand the use of several exclamation points, since as I am writing this on Memorial Day—it is only about 54 degrees Fahrenheit, and it feels as though it will NEVER be warm enough to enjoy being on the water! But, alas, I have faith and believe that, as you read this, you are celebrating summer in all its glory! In fact, I am sure that I will appreciate it more even more when I feel the cool breeze on my face and feel the water spray as we speed along on our way to Block Island and beyond! Boating has a way of making you slow down and appreciate life, appreciate the people in your life and the joy of being out on the water! This year will be a bit different, since our daughter, Abby, after finishing her first year of college, has decided to hike the desert in Israel and Palestine this summer and won’t be joining us in Block Island. But I guess that is the way it goes … We’re still looking forward to good times with good friends— long walks and beach BBQs! Here’s to summer 2017!

INTRO

N

orthport wasn’t always Northport; there was a time when it was called Great Cow Harbor. That, though, was before 1837, when it became a major shipbuilding center. By the late 1800s, the shipbuilders, and the cows for that matter, were long gone. What remained, though, was the harbor. During the Industrial Revolution, the great nouveau-riche American families sought places just like it, not for the next factory but for relaxation. In the case of Northport, it was Long Island’s “oyster barons” who found their way there, built beautiful homes and attracted the greater conveniences of life, like the electric streetcar that ran through the center of town. In 21st century Northport, the oyster barons are gone, but their houses and even the streetcar tracks remain. And the harbor is just as beautiful and accessible as ever. If you’d like to find Northport from the west, round Lloyd Point and cruise slowly down the coast to the east-southeast. Coming from the east, round Eaton’s Neck. By the time you reach the #8 flashing red bell buoy from either direction, you’re being funneled directly into Huntington Bay. Looking to the southeast, find a flashing green #1

by John Galluzzo

buoy at the southern end of West Beach (which is to the east) that will start your voyage into Northport Bay. By following the markers through the channel and into the bay to the east, you’ll pass Winkle Point and Duck Island Bluff to the north. Find a flashing red #8 buoy off the northern end of Little Neck Point—its seawall will be facing you as you approach—and head southeast into Northport Harbor. Once inside the harbor, the aids to navigation are privately owned and maintained, and might not appear on your NOAA chart. Seymour’s Boatyard has been a staple of the Northport waterfront since 1923. They take pride in the fact that they pull, inspect and upgrade each mooring annually— and that when you tie up with them, you’re just minutes away from a comfortable spot at Northport’s downtown restaurants. The Britannia Yacht Center boasts 310 slips, transient dockage, a marine repair and service center, and more. It, too, can quickly get you on the road to the local eateries, the Northport arts scene, and even those oyster barons’ homes. Great Cow Harbor is not dead—it’s vintage. It’s used all over town, as a symbol of the fact that the town has reinvented itself through time and now exists to be your summer home away from home. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

Port Jefferson

INTRO

P

ort Jefferson has come a long way in a relatively short time. Though settled in the 1600s, by 1797 it had but five homes. Captain Kidd and John Paul Jones supposedly passed through, but there were not enough people around to record their stories for certain. In those early days, it went by another name: Drowned Meadow. Prior to the War of 1812, a shipyard appeared. During the war, the British raided the harbor, giving the locals a fright, but they remained. By 1836, they decided to take the “Drowned” out of Drowned Meadow by building a causeway and creating the “Port” of Port Jefferson. To find it, if you’ve left New York City and are heading east, round Old Field Point, south of a green #11A gong buoy, and head to the east-southeast along Old Field Beach, a barrier beach protecting Port Jefferson Harbor. A green #1 and red #2 buoy mark the break in the thorough shoaling of the area, and the entrance to the dredged channel into Port Jefferson Harbor. If you’re coming from the east along the northern shore of Long Island, you won’t be able to miss Mount Misery Point. West-northwest of the entrance

by John Galluzzo

to Mount Sinai Harbor, Mount Misery stands 180 feet at its apex and slopes off gradually into Long Island Sound, a remnant of sand and gravel excavation that sent materials into the city to build some of its most famous skyscrapers. From the entrance channel, it’s a straight shot to the south end of the harbor, and the Port Jefferson municipal marina. But back to the story: Shipbuilding died when it should have, when steam took over from sail. P.T. Barnum looked at it—even bought some land— envisioning it as the home to his circus, but the locals let him know in no uncertain terms that they did not share his vision. Like the rest of America, Port Jeff went into stasis through most of the middle of 20th century, but then revitalized. It incorporated in 1963, and in America’s bicentennial year of 1976 it began a rebirth, beginning with an old shipbuilding facility. In general, Port Jeff returned access of its waterfront to the public, as industrial entities moved away. Today, Port Jeff boats a wonderful facility for transient boaters moving between the city and the Hamptons, and all over Long Island Sound. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

T

hree thousand acres of land are now set aside for the North Fork’s latest and tastiest trend: winemaking. Without going far, one can find some of the world’s best varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Nearly 40 vineyards populate the area, and many are open for tours and tastings throughout the summer. Consider the combination of award-wining wines, guided lighthouse cruises and Long Island sunsets. Not a bad way to spend the summer. Gardiners Island lies west of Montauk Point and due south of New London; west of the island is Gardiners Bay. In the middle of the bay, a red-and-white whistling nun buoy marks the site of an ancient shipwreck. Shelter Island is due west. Look to the southwest to find Ram Head. Travel south toward it, watching for a flashing green #1 buoy off its eastern end. That will lead you to private navigational aids that will direct you into Coecles Harbor, between Sungic Point on the south and Reel Point on the north. In the northwest corner of the harbor you’ll find Coecles Harbor Marina and Boatyard. For Greenport and Southold, retreat to that whistling nun. Head west beyond it until you find a red #2 and a green #3, off the southern tip of Long Beach. Follow that

by John Galluzzo

channel in a full 90-degree swing around Hay Beach Point on Shelter Island, and start heading southwest. A jetty running southeast off Young’s Point marks the approach to Greenport Harbor. Greenport’s skyline is discernible for its church spires, radio tower and water tank. Inside the breakwater you’ll find Claudio’s, Townsend Manor Inn and Preston’s, all ready to help any transient boater with any need. For Southold, head out of Greenport Harbor and follow the channel to the southwest. As you pass between Fanning Point to starboard and the Shelter Island Heights to port, keep in mind that a ferry crosses this short passage routinely. Beyond Fanning Point to starboard is Pipes Cove, framed on its southwestern edge by Conkling Point. The channel S-curves between Conkling Point and Jennings Point on Shelter Island and emerges into Southold Bay. Southold is to the west-southwest. Greenport, Southold and Shelter Island revel in Americana. The pleasantness of listening to the town band in the local park is only interrupted by the joyfulness of the local volunteer fire company’s late August chicken barbecue. It’s how summer has always been, and how summer always should be. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

ou can’t picture it now, no matter how hard you look around town—but it’s there. Sag Harbor was once a whaling capital. That’s something, of course, but so were New Bedford, Edgartown out on Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. But Sag Harbor was more than that. When whaling ruled the seas, Sag Harbor was the economic center of Long Island. That means when people thought about where the money was on Long Island, they didn’t think Manhattan. They thought Sag Harbor. The federal government, brand spanking new in 1789, named Sag Harbor as the first port of entry to the United States. That just fueled that economy, bringing in scores of young foreigners looking for spots on ships that someday they might captain themselves. Yet, when the whaling industry died, it brought Sag Harbor to a standstill. And thank goodness for that. To find Sag Harbor, cruise down into the southwest corner of Gardiners Bay and find a lone green #1 can buoy. West-southwest of it, you’ll find green #3. Leave that one to port, and do the same with Cedar Point, marked by an abandoned granite lighthouse and a modern skeletal light. Follow the channel southward as

Sag Harbor

by John Galluzzo

it heads into Northwest Harbor. Be cautious as you work your way toward Barcelona Point to the south, as there are a number of large boulders just outside the channel. Once you’ve passed Mashomack Point to the north, just off Barcelona Point to the south look for the red #8 nun buoy and the green #7; they mark the channel that will safely navigate you past extensive shoaling that becomes partially uncovered at low tide. A flashing red light marks the sand spit, and just opposite of that you’ll find green buoy #9A. The rocks here are known to the locals as Gull Island and should be kept at a distance. Coming around between green #11 and a greenand-red can marked “SH,” you’ll find the entrance to Sag Harbor, marked at the end of a long breakwater by a flashing green light. Head down the channel to the south and look for the Sag Harbor Yacht Club. Sag Harbor reinvented itself when the realization hit that whaling wasn’t coming back. Today, it’s defined by highend clothing and delectable seafood. It’s offshore yacht races and top-notch entertainment. And it’s a place where the past speaks, from the ancient homes of the whaling families to rare finds in antique shops of scrimshaw, telling us all we need to know: Sag Harbor lives. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

The Hamptons

INTRO

T

by John Galluzzo

he Hamptons, a collection of villages and hamlets that form the South Fork of the eastern end of New York’s Long Island, have had more than a century of practice in welcoming the most refined American vacationers. One 1893 New York Times reporter described a visit thusly: “as close an approach to Eden as can be found in a long journey.” There are two ways to approach the Hamptons. To get to Hampton Bays from the South Shore of Long Island, locate a spot 31 miles southwest of Montauk Light. Shinnecock Inlet, marked by 75-foot-tall Shinnecock Light, opens into Shinnecock Bay, a passage first opened by the tragic Great Hurricane of September 1938. The U.S. Coast Guard checks the depth in the inlet every day, as it fluctuates, so be sure to listen for the latest reports. Once inside the inlet, turn to port and look for channel markers. Enter the channel at the red #22 buoy and head north-northeast. The channel will swing you into the northwesternmost corner of Shinnecock Bay, where you’ll find Spellman’s Marine and Jackson’s Marina, among others. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock is off to the northwest of the inlet, on Ponquogue Point. If you’re heading for East Hampton from either Long Island Sound or Block Island Sound, pass the northern tip 34

CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2017

www.captainsguidemagazines.com

of Gardiners Island. Be sure to stay well north of the point, as there may still be unexploded ordnance near shore, dating back to World War II U.S. Navy target practice on an old Spanish-American War installation, Fort Tyler, the remains of which are still visible today. A green flashing buoy, #1GI, that will help guide you clear of any potential harm. Head south-southwest and keep the red #14 nun marking Crow Shoal to port. Continue on that south-southwest heading and look for a red-and-white bell buoy marked “TM” for “Three Mile.” Due south, let the rest of the buoys do their work and guide you past Sammy’s Beach and into Three Mile Harbor. Docking choices are plentiful on the east and south sides of the harbor, and East Hampton is just a few minutes away. Among the first sojourners to find beauty in the ancient farmlands of the Hamptons were artists. They have left a century of accomplishment in the region, igniting a modern passion for the arts that is met by immersion in similar pursuits: the search for the perfectly designed golf course, the witnessing of a horse and trainer at the height of their powers, or the majesty of a world-renowned chef’s culinary creations. As defined in America in 2017, the Hamptons in summer is the high life.

done right

After 10 years’ use, even the greatest marine products start to break down. This was the case with our Raritan head. When you live aboard your boat, as we do during the summer, you quickly realize that the head is one of the most important components of your boat. So when we started to notice some problems, we asked our marina, Seacoast Enterprises Associates in Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton, to look into it. I also called Raritan directly and told them that I was having a problem. Let me start by saying that Raritan has been in business since 1952 and, besides making superior marine products, I am pretty sure the secret to their success and longevity in a competitive industry is their great customer service! They have an incredible support team of engineers who are there to troubleshoot any of their products. Any company can sell you a product, but Raritan stands by their products for the long haul, and their support team is great at solving problems! They offered to contact Seacoast Enterprises Associates and speak with the technician there directly. This saved me from trying to be an intermediary and doing a poor job at best. By the end of that phone call, they had identified the issue and concluded that one part (not an entire re-build of the system) would solve the problem. The part was ordered and shipped that same day--and, two days later, I was on my way with a fully functioning head! raritaneng.com Seacoast Enterprises is a family-owned business that, in my opinion, has some of the best marine mechanics in the Northeast. The Mendelmans have been in business since 1970 and have grown from one marina

to now four thriving marinas. Most of their staff have been with them for more than 10 years, and this is due to the sense of family and commitment to training and support that the Mendelmans provide to their employees. In the offseason, they send their marine mechanics for additional training and education to ensure that Seacoast is on the cutting edge and is able to provide the best service around. They also invest in the most current tools and equipment and are not opposed to calling in outside specialists if a job is beyond their current scope. Peter Mendelman, president of Seacoast Enterprises, said, “We try to put ourselves in the customers’ shoes: We listen to their concerns and treat their boats as we would treat our own.” It doesn’t matter if it’s an outboard, gas or diesel engineSeacoast Enterprises Associates can handle the job. ontauk is both an end and a beginning. For most people, it’s as far as you can go on Long Island, by car or on foot. You reach the lighthouse, and from there it’s nothing but open sea. But if that’s where you have to end up, life could be much, much worse. Montauk has built up a wonderful reputation for exquisite summertime experiences through the years, a place of 5,000 acres of beaches, of miles of nature trails, and deep American history. Fishing is good from the shore and exciting from a chartered boat. There are food festivals and craft fairs, yacht races and fishing tournaments, fireworks, farmers markets, and more. So, let’s get there. You’ll find Montauk by locating its old sandstone lighthouse, painted white over brown over white. If you’re coming from Block Island, find the flashing green buoy marking Cerberus Shoal and round it to the south. Look ahead for a green-and-red bell buoy marked #7SR for Shagwong Reef. Beyond that to the south-southwest is the entrance to Lake Montauk, the local harbor. If you’re approaching from the southern side of

Montauk

by John Galluzzo

Long Island, take a wide swing around Montauk Point. Watch for a green-and-red buoy marked “SR” for Shagwong Rock to the west-northwest, off Shagwong Point, and keep it to port as you head to the west and look for the entrance to Lake Montauk. The area between Shagwong Reef and Shagwong Rock, including Washington Shoal, has minimum depths around 7½ feet at extreme low tides. If you’re at all worried about hitting bottom at those depths, take the extra few minutes to pass north of the buoy marking the reef. The channel leading into Lake Montauk is manmade. It’s about three miles west of Montauk Point, with an opening marked by a red-and-white “M” buoy. Due south of it, twin jetties funnel you in. The Montauk Coast Guard Station will stand in front of you, and transient dockage can be easily found at the Star Island Yacht Club and Uihlein’s Marina on the northern end of the lake. Montauk Marine stocks everything you need to replenish your supplies. To most of humanity, Montauk is an end. But for you, it’s just a beginning. Consider it your gateway to the Hamptons, to Long Island, and to a restful and enjoyable summer of 2017.

istorically, Milford was always seen as the place in between. During the American Revolution, it was the perfect place between Boston and New York to disrupt British military plans, with blockades along the Boston Post Road. During the Industrial Revolution, it sat between the booming cities of New Haven and Bridgeport. But while those communities chose manufacturing and all the side effects that came with it—congestion, smoke, busy streets—Milford became the getaway spot. During the Victorian Era, Milford chose the attributes that make it great today: the arts, the beach and a slower pace of life. To find Milford today, locate the mouth of the Wepawaug River. The Wepawaug sits between the Housatonic River to the west and the Connecticut River to the east. The Wepawaug’s mouth is north of Long Island’s Port Jefferson and marks the entrance to Milford Harbor. Coming from the west along the Connecticut shoreline, you’ll find a long sandbar ending at Charles Island (see below for some important information that just might change your life). Keep to port the #16

flashing red bell buoy, which marks the end of the shoals extending off the island, and enter the body of water known as “The Gulf.” If you’re coming from the east, you’ll spy a red #2 buoy that will clear you of Welches Point. From either angle, look toward the north for a red #4 buoy and the beginning of the channel that will guide you into Milford Harbor. Fort Trumbull Beach, off the port bow, and Gulf Beach, to starboard, will close in on you as you head for the jetties at the narrow entrance. Head upriver for Milford Landing, near the head of the harbor. The marina, which caters specifically to transients, is easily discernible: a big brick headquarters building patriotically flying an American flag. Milford boasts one of the greatest oyster festivals in New England, a vibrant arts scene and, for the kids in all of us, a nationally renowned sand sculpture contest, now in its 40th year. Oh, and about Charles Island? That’s where Captain Kidd supposedly buried his treasure—which has never been found. Each year, Milford celebrates with a Pirates Weekend and hands out treasure maps to help visitors on their quest to discover, if not a chest full of gold, all of the treasures the community has to offer. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

s we approach 2020 and the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims, we’ll celebrate their contribution to American maritime history through the replica vessel that stands for peace and camaraderie between England and the United States, Mayflower II. This year, though, you don’t have to travel to Plymouth to see it. It’s in Mystic. To find the “mystic places of southern Connecticut,” find Fishers Island and the sound that bears its name east of Long Island’s Orient Point and north of Gardiners Bay. The sound is busy with rocks and shoals, and, as such, channel markers are important guideposts for this area. The sound heads in an east-northeast direction toward the mainland. Once you’ve cleared the western end of Fishers Island and a pair of sandy islets called the North and South Dumplings, find a black-and-red marker over Intrepid Rock. North of the rock is Groton Long Point, and directly northeast of the buoy is a green #1 buoy marking the entrance to Mystic Harbor. The channel turns to the north. Red #2 will keep you clear of Swimming Rock, and green #3 sits near Planet Rock. If Noank and Spicer’s Marina are your destination, come around the western shore of Mouse Island and

Mystic & Noank

by John Galluzzo

pick up the series of private aids that lead to West Cove. Spicer’s welcomes transients with dozens of berths and deep-water moorings, and technicians are ready for repairs, from engines to fiberglass. The marine store has everything from electronics to bottom paint. For Mystic, stay with the main channel and look for a red-and-green nun marked “MH,” for Mystic Harbor. The channel turns slightly to port, passing red #6 to starboard. To port stands the old Morgan Point Lighthouse. Hug the coastline and the village of Noank; as it heads northward, the channel swings east to avoid Sixpenny Island before generally running northward again, with Mason Island to starboard. Once you’ve hit buoys #30 and #31, you’ll be alongside Willow Point and will be able to see Murphy Point to the northeast. Most of Noank is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it boasts the longest-running Memorial Day parade series in the United States. Mystic is home to a world class aquarium, a pizza place that inspired a movie, and the living history museum of “America and the Sea.” And, for the next few years, it’s where you can see Mayflower II being revitalized and refitted for the 1620 quadricentennial.

S

ome destinations are defined by their “one thing.” Block Island is defined, instead, by its flexibility. It’s old enough to attract sightseers interested in visiting historic lighthouses and studying the grand architectural detailing of Victorian era hotels. It’s hip enough to entertain music lovers of all kinds. It’s small enough to be biked from end to end, and it’s big enough to proudly boast 17 miles of beaches. It’s developed just enough to promise unrelenting nightlife. And it’s wild enough to be named “One of the 12 Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere” by The Nature Conservancy. And it’s cool enough to just go by a nickname: Block. As Block is at the crossroads of New York and New England, it’s easy to find. If you’re coming out of Long Island Sound and into Block Island Sound, head east. If you’re coming west along the Rhode Island shore, pass Point Judith and head south-southwest. If you’re cruising up from New York City along the southern shore of Long Island, head east-northeast. Out there in the distance ahead of you? That’s Block. To find a place to tie up or drop anchor, head for

Block Island

by John Galluzzo

Block’s western shore. The island is fringed by boulders and can shoal up quickly; for safety’s sake, give it about a half mile berth all the way around. Once you’ve found the western side, you’ll easily locate the single opening, at Grace Point, two miles south-southwest of Block Island North Light. The channel leads into Great Salt Pond. That channel is marked by a breakwater on the southwest side, which exhibits a light at its end. Clear the red #11 and green #12 buoys inside the harbor, and look for the biggest marina you can see, Champlin’s. Hail them on Channel 68 for everything a boater needs. Payne’s Dock is nearby, too, with its rocking Mahogany Shoals Bar. Tie up and tie into one. You may be cruising toward Block to attend a wedding. If not, once you get there, you may see the various beautiful venues and start planning your next one. You may be counting on those walking trails for an escape. Or you may be looking for fudge (which isn’t hard to find at all). Pack for all occasions and remember that you may decide to stay later in the season than you would elsewhere, for, even when temperatures start to drop, Block remains a hot topic for all. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

the Boys of Summer

CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2017

www.captainsguidemagazines.com

There’s no place quite like the Great Salt Pond during the summer! It’s like a little floating city. You wake up in the morning, wave to your neighbors, and everything you need can come direct to you without ever leaving your boat! “ANDIAMO!” Aldo’s Bakery has been open and operational for more than 45 years. Within five years of opening the bakery, the original Aldo needed a way to bring in more business and to find a way to get the boaters who sailed to Block Island in the 1970s to his bakery. But what he ended up with was a radical idea to bring the bakery to them. He decided to load up baked goods from his bakery every morning and make his way to New Harbor. Once there, he would hire a local skiff to drive him around the harbor, singing Italian opera and selling his fresh baked goods to summertime visitors. Aldo continued this tradition for the next few years, until it was passed down to his son Bobby, who sailed the salt pond for almost 35 years. It then was passed down to John Levesque, who has been sailing the salt pond for almost seven years. The bakery boat makes two daily trips around the pond: once in the morning, usually between 7 and 11 a.m., carrying items like fresh brewed coffee, hot-and-ready breakfast sandwiches, fresh

baked goods, muffins, cinnamon rolls, danish, croissants and more; then a second time around for lunch and appetizers between 3 and 7 p.m., carrying items such as calzones or stuffed breads, slices of bakery pizza, fresh seafood, shrimp cocktail, fresh oysters, clams, and even fresh sushi rolls. He also has fresh baked snacks, brownies, cookies, slices of cheesecake, and a great selection of other desserts as well. Boaters can get ahold of the bakery boat by VHF on Channel 71, with a good old hand wave, or just listen for the famous call: “Andiamo!” Boaters also should have no worries, as the bakery boat is out on the water seven days a week, twice a day, rain or shine ... If there is a boat in need, Aldo’s will be there indeed! WATER AND ICE, WITHOUT THE HASSLE! WaterBoy was established in 2013 by Matt O’Hayer. Matt, being a lifelong summer resident, a graduate of the Block Island School and a boater, saw a need ... At the time, he had been spending summers aboard his 38-foot sloop, Ananda, on the hook, and he realized how inconvenient it was to fill a boat’s water tanks during the busy summer season. Boats were forced to use small containers or to move to the dock, if and when a spot opened up, to fill up. The idea was spawned and, after purchasing the Committee for the Great Salt Pond’s retiring research boat, and outfitting it with 300-gallon water tanks, pumps, gauges and hoses, the delivery service was formed. The WaterBoy runs seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 1 to 6 p.m. Hail them on VHF Channel 71. There is a $20 minimum, which gets you 40

gallons of potable water delivered into your boat’s fresh water tank. WaterBoy rafts to your boat and fills your tank in six to eight minutes. They also deliver bagged ice and sell T-shirts; the shirt’s design changes every year, and many loyal customers now collect them. WaterBoy was founded to give boaters the opportunity to have more time to spend enjoying the island. A stressful boat move trying to get to the dock, or schlepping water blatters from the dock, can be frustrating and take hours of precious vacation time that could otherwise be spent at the beach, riding bikes or relaxing with your family. WaterBoy makes life on the water easier and has always been a huge supporter and donator to the Block Island Maritime Institute, as well all things benefiting the Great Salt Pond and Block Island. YOU NEED IT DELIVERED-WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED! Now in its second year on the Great Salt Pond, Sea Pod is your go-to “concierge service.” If you need anything delivered to your boat-and I mean ANYTHING, from groceries and beer to --hardware, supplies, or takeout from any of the on-shore restaurants--you call them, they deliver. Wet towels? Damp sheets? Call Sea Pod--they

will stop by the boat, pick up your dirty laundry and return it, often the same day! Sea Pod was started by two lifelong friends, Nicholas St. Jacques and Bobby Welch; chances are, when you call, one of these two guys will be over to your boat in a flash! If you are on the beach and have a craving for a Hersey Bar, call them-they’ll deliver it to you on the beach! 401.871.5061 • Seapodbi.com

ne could argue that there’s no reason to go to Newport, that there’s enough going on just offshore to make one’s summer. And that’s true. Newport is America’s yachting destination, where, on any given day, spinnakers are aflutter in all the colors of the rainbow. Who needs to go ashore? Yet, even yachties leave the water once in a while. Newport during the Gilded Age grew in ways that seemed unfathomable to even the most prudent of observers of the American social elite. Mansions the likes of which no one had ever seen were built, and today they are preserved for your inspection. Yet, a few miles away, across the bay, lies peaceful Jamestown, which, somehow, was untouched by the fervor of Victorian oneupmanship. Northwest of Martha’s Vineyard and northeast of Block Island lies Aquidneck (the other name for the island named Rhode Island), at the northern edge of Rhode Island Sound. The East Passage into Narragansett Bay bisects Brenton Point, the southwestern corner of Newport Neck, and Beavertail Point to its west, the southern tip of Conanicut Island, which is marked by a historic lighthouse. Keep to the eastern side of the

passage, clearing the red #6 bell buoy near Butter Ball Rock and the Castle Hill Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station to starboard. Run up the channel to the northeast, and take a turn to the southeast around historic Fort Adams and its dock. Look off to the east for the green #1 marker at the southern end of Goat Island (Brenton Cove will be due south) and follow the channel into Newport Harbor. The Newport Yachting Center is the biggest wharf you’ll see on the eastern shore. Be sure to watch for racing buoys: They’re out all summer long, and you won’t find them on any charts. To reach Jamestown from the East Passage, cruise past Fort Adams, leaving it to starboard as you head north. Steer wide of the area known as the Dumplings off the Conanicut Island shore by staying outside the green #11 bell buoy, and watch for the channel markers to the northwest that will bring you into Jamestown. Newport is home to food and music festivals, world class polo matches and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Jamestown is renowned for its historic windmill, its quiet open spaces and its view of Narragansett Bay. Rarely can one find such a juxtaposition of bustle and retreat. Take advantage of each one as the mood strikes you.

ong before the Cape Cod Canal opened, and even before President Grover Cleveland staked out the lot for his “summer White House” in the area, the Buzzards Bay region was on the American history map. It was here that the New World’s free enterprise system began. The Bourne Historical Society will tell you that story. It’s up to you to add your tale to the Buzzards Bay story this summer. The president came to fish, of course. “Buzzards” in the 1600s are called “ospreys” today, and their presence is a good indicator of where the fish are. But Cleveland saw more in the Buzzards Bay towns that made him want to spend his downtime here. To find out why, enter the Cape Cod Canal (if you’re coming from points north) from its eastern end, pass under all three bridges, then follow the channel to a red #2 buoy. Swing to port and head inside Wing’s Neck (look for the old lighthouse) toward Red Brook Harbor. If you’ve just come from Rhode Island Sound, approach the western end of the Cape Cod Canal. The main channel begins off the west end of Cuttyhunk, the last of the Elizabeth Islands chain. Run the entire 14 miles of the chain, and at the red #10 buoy, look

to the north-northeast for the Cleveland East Ledge Lighthouse (yes, the ledge was named for him) and keep it to starboard as you enter Cleveland Ledge Channel. Beyond the green #7 and red #8 buoys, watch to the northeast for that red #2 nun buoy that marks Southwest Ledge off Scraggy Neck. Keep it to starboard and head for Red Brook Harbor. To enter the harbor, find a red-and-green nun marking Eustis Rock, and when you do, look to the southeast for the channel that’ll swing you around the southern end and extensive shoaling of Bassett’s Island. To the southeast is Hospital Cove. Run a horseshoe pattern to buoys #10 and #11. Once you’ve passed the tip of Long Point off to starboard, turn your eyes to the east. The Kingman Yacht Center has 235 slips, 130 moorings and a restaurant facing sunsets over the harbor. Parker’s Boat Yard offers 130 moorings, nine slips, a full marine store, ice, fuel and showers, and complimentary bicycles for shoreline exploration, Refresh, then venture out to the National Marine Life Center, Mass Maritime Academy, the Aptucxet Trading Post and some Cape Cod League Baseball. And see what brought the president back, on more than one occasion. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

t’s amazing what a long stretch of sand, facing the open ocean, warmed by the summer sun, can do for one’s soul. Cape Cod is blessed with just such a confluence of these desirable attributes. All one needs is a place to tie up and step ashore. Hyannis is that place. It’s perfectly positioned to be Cape Cod’s welcome center for boaters. It’s a transportation hub, with the regional airport whisking travelers off to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and 40 other destinations. Travelers moving by car exit from Route 6 to refuel for the trip east to the Cape Cod National Seashore, to dine at the many restaurants in town, or to take in the Kennedy family legacy. In 2017, Hyannis will remember the 100th anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy at many sites in town. Ferries load up and take off at all hours of the day for the islands. And that, of course, is a key to you finding Hyannis in the first place. Just follow the ferries on their way in. If none is in sight, if you’re coming from the west, split Horseshoe Shoal buoys #7 and #8 and watch for the red #2 buoy over Hodges Rock. Keep to the east of the rock by about 1,500 yards and watch to the

68

CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2017

www.captainsguidemagazines.com

northeast for a red-and-white bell buoy marked “HH” for Hyannis Harbor. North of that, you’ll find the breakwater at the mouth of the harbor. If you’re coming from the east, stay well clear of Point Gammon and its abandoned lighthouse, as the approach can be quite rocky. Stay well south of Gazelle Rock, and even south of the unmarked (but charted) Hallett’s Rock to the south of that. Refer to your NOAA number 13237 chart for safety. Find that same “HH” buoy and the breakwater. Hyannis Harbor passes into Lewis Bay, which makes up the northeast corner. In the northwestern corner of that bay you’ll find the best places to tie up and get your foothold on a Cape Cod summer. From there, the Cape is yours, from the canal to Chatham to Provincetown. Cape Cod League baseball games, unmatched seafood choices and centuries of history await your arrival in a region of the country bracing for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing. And, remember, before they hit Plymouth, they visited Cape Cod. They may have found it by accident, but if you ask us, they knew exactly what they were doing.

e really have to go back to the whaling era to find cultural commonalities between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, which have been drifting away from each other since the last Ice Age. But that’s what makes visiting them so fun. No two islands, so close to each other, could be so different. Coming from the southwest of Martha’s Vineyard, look for the high, sandy bluffs known as Gay Head, marked by the red brick Gay Head Lighthouse. Stay north of the green #31 buoy in the sound to steer clear of the Devil’s Bridge rocks, home of an 1884 shipwreck. The channel heads to the northeast. Round the green #27 buoy marking the western end of the Middle Ground shoal area. Nine miles to the east-northeast you’ll find the other, eastern end of that hazard, marked by a green-and-red can buoy. Find that, and you’ve found West Chop. Swing your way southward between West Chop and East Chop, and you’ll find Vineyard Haven Harbor. For Oak Bluffs, turn to starboard around East Chop, leaving Vineyard Haven Harbor, and the next harbor will appear quickly, marked by jetties. Inside, you’ll find the Oak Bluffs Marina, the largest facility of its kind on

Martha’s Vineyard. For Edgartown Harbor, cruise to the east-southeast for a red #2 bell buoy, heeding the green-and-red can marking Squash Meadow to the north. The bell buoy will put you on the approach to Edgartown Harbor to the south. Follow the channel past #3, #4 and #6, keeping Cape Poge Light and the spit of sand known as Cape Poge Elbow to port as you go. Round the red #8 and head for the inner harbor, around Chappaquiddick Point. NOAA puts out a localized chart, number 13238, because of shifting sands in this area, to help you find your way. To find Nantucket, take the green #1 bell buoy, marking a shipwreck off the east end of Tuckernuck Shoal, before making your move to the south-southeast. The channel that will take you into Nantucket Harbor will head to the southeast. Nantucket’s north shore will spread before you and a red-and-white bell buoy marked “NB” will guide you into the dredged channel into the harbor, past one of the island’s signature lighthouses at Brant Point. The Nantucket Boat Basin, your home on the Faraway Island, is on the western side of the harbor beyond those landmarks. Either island makes for a good vacation; both together offer a summer’s worth of surprises. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

T

he word “leeward” means something special to anyone who spends time on the sea. It represents the calmer side, the safer place to be. The 26 or so major Leeward Islands divide the Atlantic and the Caribbean, with Antigua being the biggest and the sunniest. In the Caribbean, that’s saying a lot. Long before tourism even became a noun, the Caribbean’s ancient peoples, the Ciboneys, Arawaks and Caribs, lived here. Christopher Columbus named the island, in 1893, in honor of St. Mary of the Old Cathedral: Santa Maria de la Antigua. As the centuries progressed, the British exploited the island, harvesting sugarcane by use of slave labor imported from West Africa through the 17th and 18th centuries. Their sweat and tears are symbolically preserved today in the approximately 100 windmills that populate the island. St. John is the biggest municipality on the island, hosting about 30,000 of the island’s 80,000 residents. Luxury hotels rim the island, which is driven today by tourism, and are counterbalanced by open spaces like

Indian Town National Park on the opposite end of the island from St. John. Miles of hiking trails lead through the natural habitats, with one stretching more than a mile to gorgeous Indian Town Point. Admiral Horatio Nelson left another piece of the British legacy that has extreme usefulness today to visiting boaters. He identified English Harbour as a hurricane hole while in command of the naval dockyard there, and so it is today for ships’ captains three centuries later. History’s injustices can be reversed. Today’s Antigua is home to a celebratory West African culture, carried forward by the descendants of those forced into servitude in the 1700s and 1800s. And they live in one of the most meteorologically consistent places on the planet: On average, the daily temperature is between 75 and 85 degrees, with low humidity and near constant breezes. The trade winds slightly diminish in September, and travelers can expect about 45 inches of rain throughout the year, usually in short, refreshing bursts. Whoever named the Leeward Islands knew exactly what they were talking about.

Nelson’s Dockyard is the oldest working dockyard in the world, dating back to the Georgian era. Hiking trails lead from the dockyard to various historic military outposts throughout the biggest of the Antiguan national parks. English Harbour 268.481.5021 nationalparksantigua.com

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA

T

Three hundred and sixty-five glamorous white and pink sandy beaches, sparkling Caribbean waters, cooling Tradewinds and a strong nautical tradition: Antigua and Barbuda is a twin-island paradise boasting of two unique holiday experiences in one.

he former British territory located in the Eastern Caribbean--and a four-hour flight from the U.S. mainland--appeals to all, whether “A-list” celebrities, couples, families or friends. The destination offers captivating culture, rich historical treasures, award-winning hotels, delicious cuisine and exhilarating activities, making it the ultimate vacation spot. Antigua is the larger of the two islands, with a population of approximately 90,000. With no attraction more than 45 minutes away, Antigua is relatively easy to navigate. Its history and spectacular topography provides a variety of popular sightseeing opportunities. In Antigua, visitors can experience the Caribbean’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Antigua and Barbuda’s first, when they visit the historic Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour and the surrounding archaeological sites within the National Parks. Antigua is the sailing capital of the Caribbean, and the Nelson’s Dockyard is home to the annual Antigua Sailing Week, which next takes place from April 28 to

78

CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2017

May 4, 2018. The 51st edition of the event will draw thousands to the area for what is considered one of the world’s top regattas. www.saHYPERLINK “http://www. sailingweek.com/”ilingweek.com In the Dockyard, explore beautiful Georgian-style naval buildings, the dockyard museum, boutique shops, restaurants and the marina. The National Park is dotted with forts, hiking trails, scenic landscapes and Antigua’s famous Shirley Heights Lookout, where visitors will find the remains of an 18th century British garrison. It is at Shirley Heights, high above English Harbour, where visitors also will receive what is probably the most breathtaking view in the Caribbean. Go on Sunday for the lively barbecue party, which is the place to be for the weekly “jump up,” where tourists and residents mingle and enjoy a stunning sunset, rum cocktails and steel bands playing and other live acts. Other attractions in this area include the Dows Hill Interpretation Centre, which provides a historic overview of six periods of Antiguan history, and the spectacular Pillars of Hercules rock formation, accessible

via the Carpenter’s Rock hiking trail or by sea. A variety of land and sea activities also await the adventure-seeker in Antigua. Water sports abound, from sailing, boat cruising, water skiing, kite surfing, kayaking, deep sea and reef fishing to scuba diving, swimming with stingrays, and snorkelling. For land lubbers, two 18-hole golf courses and professional tennis courts are accessible and open to the public. In addition, the island offers other popular recreational activities, such as horseback riding, helicopter tours, cycling and hiking. There are 365 beaches on Antigua, one for every day of the year. The numerous reefs and coves, combined with crystal-clear turquoise waters, afford beachgoers the luxury of privacy and beauty. The great majority of beaches rest inside the calm, protected waters of the island’s Caribbean side. All are open to the public. Popular spots include Morris Bay, Turners Beach, Ffreyes Bay, Darkwood Beach and Dickenson Bay. The shoreline along the east side of the island includes Half Moon Bay and Long Bay, which offer great snorkeling opportunities, while Jabberwock in the north is great for kite-surfing. One of the best ways to see some of the islands’ most remarkable scenery is to journey to Antigua’s “Green Corridor” for a drive along the southwest coastline, culminating in an exhilarating zip wire canopy tour high above the rainforest, or a hike to Antigua’s highest point, Mount Obama. If you prefer to have two feet on the ground, Jeep safari tours are on hand to wrestle their way through some of the rockiest paths. Adventurers can hop on a helicopter to discover nearby gems or make their way to the Indian National Park at the remote easternmost point of the island to see enormous geysers of water burst through boreholes in the rocks at nearby Devil’s Bridge, the large natural limestone arch on the shoreline of Indian Town Point.

For the pink, sandy beaches, and a bit of peace and serenity, travel to Barbuda. You will find the journey a short one, with travel by air only 15 minutes and by sea 1½ hours. Antigua’s smaller sister island has a population of approximately 1,500. The island is known for its spectacular 17-mile stretch of pristine rose-pink beach. Barbuda is also home to the largest colony of frigate birds in the Western Hemisphere. Organized tours are in place for visitors to get within a few feet of the birds’ nests at the Codrington Lagoon, where some 5,000 birds make their home. Antigua and Barbuda, with its near-perfect weather conditions, warmly welcomes holidaymakers year round, and has a packed events calendar from January to December. This Summer, Antigua and Barbuda celebrates “The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival,” Antigua’s Carnival: a celebration of the creativity, music, culture and heritage of Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua’s Carnival runs from July 27 to August 8, 2017. Direct flights into Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport are available from major International gateways such as New York, Miami, Atlanta, London, and Frankfurt. For more information: visitantiguabarbuda.com

Shirley Heights

First and foremost, Shirley Heights is a historic site, a British military lookout over the entirety of the dockyard below, and a signal station for sending messages to St. John. An obelisk here records the names of all the men in British military service who died here between 1840 and 1851. But, for the past three decades, the site has been a Sunday afternoon party venue, with steel bands starting at 4, and the main act arriving at 7 and playing until 10. The story of Antigua and Barbuda reaches much further back than the arrival of European imperialist forces, though that tale is told well enough in the structure that houses the museum itself, a 1750 courthouse standing in memory of the British Empire. Inside are

stone tools reaching back to the Archaic Age, telling the story of the islands from “geological birth to political independence.” Vibrant exhibits and a rich research library carry out this mission with flair. Market and Long streets St. John’s 268.462.1469 antiguamuseums.net

Indian Town National Park

The extreme eastern shore of Antigua is the most rugged part of the island, the place where the prevailing subequatorial easterly winds push the waters of the Caribbean relentlessly into the exposed bedrock. Erosion here created the Devil’s Bridge, a naturally curved limestone arch, and, at their highest, the tides shoot rushes of water into geyser-like spouts through the porous rocks that dominate the area. With multiple trails to follow through the park, sunscreen, a map and water are a must. Long Bay, between Willikens Village and Nonsuch Ba nationalparksantigua.com

t. Thomas is celebrating a landmark anniversary in 2017: one hundred years since the creation of the U.S. Virgin Islands, a relic of the age of imperialism and a measure of protection against the potential of World War I, then being fought in Europe, creeping toward the American shore. But St. Thomas has a long, cosmopolitan history, featuring the native Caribs, the Ciboneys and the Arawaks, and a centuries-long parade of inhabitants from Spain, France, Great Britain, Holland, and the people of Denmark and Norway. In the late 1500s, Sir Francis Drake spied on Spanish shipping from the island’s heights, a tactic copied by Edward Teach, the infamous pirate Blackbeard, a century and a half later, as he sought easy targets for his notorious depredations. Norway was a part of Denmark when the Danish West India Company settled on the island in the 1670s. Needing to establish military defenses, they built Fort Christian, an outpost of their empire that today is undergoing a major renovation through the U.S.

National Park Service. Another Danish relic, Skytsborg Tower, utilized by Blackbeard, is the architectural icon of St. Thomas. To find it, one can choose a tram, or the ancient 99 Steps (actually, 103), built from the ballast stones of Danish ships. Everything on St. Thomas begins in Charlotte Amalie, the capital, where there are walking tours that visit historic homes, duty-free shopping and the famed Market Square. Deeper exploration can bring peaceful moments at Brewers Bay and jumping times at Magens Beach. Before renting a car to reach these places, be sure to review the rules of the road. Most of the rental cars on the island are American, with steering wheels on the left, but the rules are Danish, which means driving on the left. The island is only 32 square miles in size but cherishes such quirky historical elements as the oldest operating synagogue on U.S. soil, and the childhood home of one of France’s most celebrated impressionist painters. From sea level to the top of Skytsborg Tower, St. Thomas offers opportunities to explore, relax and experience a truly diverse Caribbean paradise.

he BVIs had been settled by the peaceful Arawaks and the warring Caribs for centuries before Christopher Columbus first spied the 60 or so islands that make up the chain in 1492. Then came the Dutch, Spanish, French, Danish and the British, who eventually gained full control of the islands. Sugar plantations operating on the backs of West African slaves on Tortola, the main island, drove the economy of the BVIs until 1834, when the British government ended the practice of slavery. The economy crashed, but the BVIs were a better place spiritually, opening the door to the cultural tourism destination that exists today. Road Town, the capital city, is the hub, the place from which all adventures start. The ancient community gained its name from the old maritime term for an anchorage, and today it still attracts sea captains from all over the world, on boats of all sizes. It’s a place of high-end eateries and roadside jerk chicken stands, of world class duty-free shopping on Main Street and a place where the British accent floats on the air, the

West African traditions live on, and even the faces of the Caribs can be seen in the native residents. Each island has a story to tell, from Jost Van Dyke to Anegada to Virgin Gorda. Wellness comes in many forms, from snorkeling from an old schooner to a climb to the top of Mt. Healthy. The five territorial colors could not be more appropriate: blue for the ocean, yellow for the sun, white for the beaches, green for the lush vegetation on the hills, and red for the feisty nature of the islands themselves. The Baths at Virgin Gorda, named both for its pools of water and the batholithic stones that form the caverns and the pools, are a unique experience in the Caribbean. The same could be said about drinking a Painkiller on Jost Van Dyke, or a walk through the botanical gardens in Road Town. Fishing, dining, hiking, snorkeling, lounging on the beach, kicking back to the sounds of the native fungi music--the list goes on. The British Virgin Islands beckon to revelers from around the world, and never disappoint.

Sag Harbor

INTRO

T

by John Galluzzo

wo centuries ago, when Sag Harbor came up in conversation, ears perked up. Sag Harbor was a place where the whaling industry more than lived--it thrived. It was the economic center of Long Island, long before Manhattan became what it is today. It was where young men from around the world gathered for a chance to board a vessel for an opportunity, just a chance, to get that foothold in the industry, to springboard to a life of fortune, possibly fame. But whaling crashed. The whales became scarcer. Journeys to find them went farther afield, until eventually East Coast captains found themselves routinely rounding Cape Horn and heading for the hunting fields in the Pacific approaches to the Arctic, spending years at sea instead of months. Investors pulled their capital from the industry. Sag Harbor froze in time. Money traveled west to the other end of the island. The old sea captains who had built beautiful new homes in the Federalist Era spent their declining years in them, unable to build anew. Those houses remain today, 92

symbolic of a long-lost prosperity that has since been replaced by a new one. Today, we consider it the essence of the Americana that defines the community. As every good Realtor knows, there are three words connected with success: location, location, location. Sag Harbor, despite its mid-19th century economic downturn, quickly rose again. When the prime movers of the industrial revolution sought relaxation, inventing the vacation, they looked for places away from the cities, on the water’s edge, and quiet. Sag Harbor checked all three boxes. Nestled at the East End of Long Island, Sag Harbor is a gateway to the Hamptons, a place of scrimshaw-filled antique shops, where relaxation consists of watching America’s Cup contenders practice their craft offshore before a delectable dinner and a night at the local theater. And it’s a place where whaling lives, in the exhibits and programs at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. And, so, today, when someone brings the name Sag Harbor into conversation, ears perk up, and smiles spread.

B

oth Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard were long ago defined by the whaling industry. Native Americans killed whales from shore long before Captain Peter Pease’s schooner Lydia turned seaward on the first Vineyard whaling voyage in 1765. Nantucket is the home of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and the development of the “Nantucket sleigh ride,” the term for those few moments after a whale is harpooned and a small whaleboat is pulled chaotically across the wave tops by the injured animal. But whaling as an industry died, and, as often happens in American history, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard froze in time, temporarily. Nantucket’s cobblestone main streets, designed to allow horses pulling heavy loads from the docks to get a toehold for the uphill struggle, went quiet. Sea captains’ fabulous Federalist era homes in the Vineyard’s Edgartown became the high-water mark, as, without the economic boom of whaling, they could no longer afford to build anew. Today, those cobblestone streets and sea captains’ homes stand as centerpieces of the historical tourism that drive the economic engines of both islands. It took a war. Martha’s Vineyard hosted a Naval air facility in World War II, meaning that pilots and other

the Islands

by John Galluzzo

servicemen from “away” discovered the islands for the first time. After the war, they returned to buy land, build homes and create new lives for themselves. Populations boomed with the general postwar prosperity as the old families began to fight to preserve their islands’ identities. And so they did. Nantucket had already opened its whaling museum in 1929 and would later memorialize its other beloved traditions with the opening of a lifesaving museum, dedicated to the locals’ long history of rescue of mariners in distress at sea, its lightship basket museum, and its series of sites dedicated to Maria Mitchell, the world’s first female astronomer. Martha’s Vineyard today celebrates its whaling history through those old sea captains’ homes, maintains its iconic lighthouses and boasts one of the finest historical society museums in New England. Both islands rock through the summer, with festivals, fishing tournaments, gala events and holiday celebrations that enrapture entire downtown areas. From the rosecovered cottages of Nantucket’s ‘Sconset to the Vineyard’s Gay Head Lighthouse atop the cliffs at Aquinnah, the islands’ past and present combine in anticipation of the arrival of seasonal seekers of relaxation, recreation and repose. www.captainsguidemagazines.com
