ou just can’t overestimate the power of a good harbor. When Northport was young, ample pasturage surrounded the waters of the bay, and the first thing a visitor noted was the number of cows that grazed along its edges. This superficial examination provided the town’s first name: Great Cow Harbor. Then came shipbuilding, a boom and a bust, and an 1837 name change to Northport. Left without industry during the Industrial Revolution, the community still benefited from the movement, becoming the place where the monied class wanted to be when they weren’t in their factories. For Northport, that meant it became the summer home to Long Island’s “oyster barons” who found their way there, built beautiful homes and attracted the greater conveniences of life, like the electric streetcar that ran through the center of town. To find Northport from the west, round Lloyd Point and cruise slowly down the coast to the east-southeast. Coming from the east, round Eaton’s Neck. By the time you reach the #8 flashing red bell buoy from either direction, you’re being funneled directly into Huntington Bay. Looking to the southeast, find the flashing green #1 buoy at the southern end of West Beach (which is to the

east) that will start your voyage into Northport Bay. By following the markers through the channel into the bay to the east, you’ll pass Winkle Point and Duck Island Bluff to the north. Find a flashing red #8 buoy off the northern end of Little Neck Point–its seawall will be facing you as you approach–and head southeast into Northport Harbor. Once inside the harbor, the aids to navigation are privately owned and maintained, so they might not appear on your NOAA chart. Seymour’s Boatyard has served the Northport waterfront since 1923. The staff pulls, inspects and upgrades each mooring annually, and will quickly help you fund a comfortable spot at Northport’s downtown restaurants. The Britannia Yachting Center boasts 310 slips, transient dockage, a marine repair and service center, and more, with more than a quarter century of local service itself. Great Cow Harbor lives, as a symbol of the fact that the town has reinvented itself through time. The oyster barons left their stately homes behind, as well as the streetcar tracks. And that gold old harbor? You’ll be able to judge for yourself, of course, just how well it serves Northport, and its visitors, today. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

e take it as a given in the northeastern United States that communities there are old, with centuries of history. And so it would seem in Port Jeff, where an Irish shoemaker built the first permanent home in 1682 on the “drowned meadow” that gave the town its first name. But the implied wetness of the area made it difficult for the pursuit of the great American dream of those years, farming. By 1797, only a few homes existed in the area. Then, though, with the coming of shipbuilding, fortunes changed. The British found it to be of such importance that they raided Drowned Meadow during the War of 1812. By 1836, the locals built a causeway that created the port of Port Jefferson, and voted to take on that name. In 1852, the United States named Port Jefferson as an official port of entry. The railroad arrived in 1873, and a cross-sound ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut, came a decade later. Though off to a late start, Port Jeff was on its way. To find it today from the west, round Old Field Point, south of a green #11A gong buoy, and head to the eastsoutheast along Old Field Beach, a barrier beach protecting Port Jefferson Harbor. A green #1 and red #2 buoy mark the break in the thorough shoaling of the area, and the entrance
by John Galluzzo
to the dredged channel into Port Jefferson Harbor. If you’re coming from the east along the northern Long Island shore, watch for 180-foot-tall Mt. Misery, which slopes off gradually into Long Island Sound, a remnant of sand and gravel excavation that sent materials into the city to build some of its most famous skyscrapers. Round Mt. Misery Point for the entrance channel, and it’s a straight shot to the south end of the harbor and the Port Jefferson municipal marina. The Age of Sail ended and shipbuilding died with it locally. Port Jefferson spent the first half of the 20th century just like most other small American towns: awaiting redefinition. Tourism became the magnet. The community incorporated in 1963, breaking away from nearby Brookhaven, and gradually returned access of its waterfront to the public, as industrial entities moved away. Port Jefferson looks to the sea, awaiting the next transient boater heading for shore. It still holds on to ancient traditions, celebrating its maritime heritage and the big names–Captain Kidd, John Paul Jones, P.T. Barnum, etc.– associated with its past but stays modern, even progressive, when it considers its future. Thanks to Port Jeff, you can cruise from the Hamptons to the city without missing a beat. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

ural living is what defines the towns of the North Fork of Long Island, a place of beaches and vineyards, farm-to-table dinners and miles of bicycle-friendly roads. American traditions live on here, like the 64th annual strawberry festival and 55th annual craft fair happening this summer. There are historic sites to see, like the “9/11 and Otherwise Historic Fireboat” in Greenport, and enough lighthouses for any devotee to spend a weekend admiring. Gardiners Island lies west of Montauk Point and due south of New London; west of the island is Gardiners Bay. In the middle of the bay, a red-and-white whistling nun buoy marks the site of an ancient shipwreck. Shelter Island is due west. Look to the southwest to find Ram Head. Travel south toward it, watching for a flashing green #1 buoy off its eastern end. That will lead you to private navigational aids that will direct you into Coecles Harbor, between Sungic Point on the south and Reel Point on the north. In the northwest corner of the harbor you will find Coecles Harbor Marina and Boatyard. For Greenport and Southold, retreat to that whistling nun. Head west beyond it until you find a red #2 and a green #3, off the southern tip of Long Beach. Follow that
by John Galluzzo
channel in a full 90-degree swing around Hay Beach Point on Shelter Island, and start heading southwest. A jetty running southeast off Young’s Point marks the approach to Greenport Harbor. Greenport’s skyline is discernible for its church spires, radio tower and water tank. Inside the breakwater, you’ll find Claudio’s, Townsend Manor Inn and Preston’s, all ready to help any transient boater with any need. For Southold, head out of Greenport Harbor and follow the channel to the southwest. As you pass between Fanning Point to starboard and the Shelter Island Heights to port, keep in mind that a ferry crosses this short passage routinely. Beyond Fanning Point to starboard is Pipes Cove, framed on its southwestern edge by Conkling Point. The channel S-curves between Conkling Point and Jennings Point on Shelter Island and emerges into Southold Bay. Southold is to the west-southwest. Greenport, Southold and Shelter Island are at the heart of 3,000 acres of land now cultivated for the local wine trade: Merlots, Chardonnays, Cabernet Francs and more. Some words just go together, like wine, sunset and cruise. Summer on the North Fork encompasses them all.

by John Galluzzo
haling, at its early 19th century zenith, transformed communities like New Bedford, Nantucket and Sag Harbor. Money flowed freely and voluminously among ship owners, ship captains and the hordes of young men shipping out in hopes of starting their own fortunes. In those days, money defined Sag Harbor. As the first designated port of entry into the United States, it welcomed heavily laden cargo-carrying ships from around the world. When Manhattan was just in its infancy, Sag Harbor was the economic epicenter of Long Island. To find Sag Harbor, cruise down into the southwest corner of Gardiners Bay and find a lone green #1 can buoy. West-southwest of it, you’ll find green #3. Leave that one to port, and do the same with Cedar Point, which is marked by both an abandoned granite lighthouse and a modern skeletal light. Follow the channel southward as it heads into Northwest Harbor. Barcelona Point, to the south, should be heeded, as there are a number of large boulders just outside the channel. Watch here for the red #8 nun buoy and the green #7 that mark the channel that will safely navigate you past extensive shoaling that becomes partially uncovered at 20

low tide. A flashing red light marks the sand spit, and just opposite of that you’ll find green buoy 9A. The rocks here are known to the locals as Gull Island and should be kept at a distance. Coming around between green #11 and a green-andred can marked “SH,” you’ll find the entrance to Sag Harbor, marked at the end of a long breakwater by a flashing green light. Head down the channel to the south and look for the Sag Harbor Yacht Club. When the last whaler walked away from Sag Harbor, the community slowed to a near standstill in time. The locals knew that the industry would never return and reinvented their village to capitalize on the next wave of great American pastimes: relaxation. Sag Harbor is now a world of antiques and seafood, high-end clothing and top-notch entertainment. It’s one of those rare small towns that has a historical society and an industry-specific museum, in this case celebrating, of course, the days when the return of a successful whaling ship signaled a new wave of prosperity for the locals. For Sag Harbor, the hard work is done. It’s a community that’s earned its relaxation phase, and all are welcome to join the fun.

The Hamptons

ong before Americans fully grasped the notion of the vacation, they found the Hamptons. Comprising the villages and hamlets of the South Fork of the East End of Long Island, the Hamptons is among the premier summertime escape destinations in the United States. Today, it’s a place to see and be seen, for go-getters more than background-dwellers. There are two ways to get there by boat. If you’re heading for East Hampton from either Long Island Sound or Block Island Sound, pass the northern tip of Gardiners Island. Be mindful, though, to stay well north of the point, as the U.S. Navy used an old SpanishAmerican War installation, Fort Tyler, for target practice during World War II, and there may still be unexploded ordnance near shore. A green flashing buoy, #1GI, that will help guide you clear of any potential harm. Head south-southwest and keep the red #14 nun marking Crow Shoal to port. Continue on that south-southwest heading and look for a red-and-white bell buoy marked TM for “Three Mile.” Due south, let the rest of the buoys do their work and guide you past Sammy’s Beach and into Three Mile Harbor. Docking choices are plentiful on the east and south sides of the harbor, and East Hampton is just a few minutes away.

To get to Hampton Bays from the South Shore of Long Island, locate Shinnecock Inlet, about 31 miles southwest of Montauk Light. The inlet, marked by 75-foot-tall Shinnecock Light, opens into Shinnecock Bay. The inlet was formed by a bit of Mother Nature’s historic work, opened by the tragic Great Hurricane of September 1938. The U.S. Coast Guard checks the depth in the inlet every day, as it fluctuates, and keeps boaters apprised of the latest reports. Once inside the inlet, turn to port and look for channel markers. Enter the channel at the red #22 buoy and head north-northeastward. The channel will swing you into the northwesternmost corner of Shinnecock Bay, where you’ll find Spellman’s Marine and Prime Marina, among others. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock is off to the northwest of the inlet, on Ponquogue Point. It’s hard to say what to do next, because the choices are so plentiful. The Hamptons region doesn’t boast a single “most celebrated” event of the season; instead, they welcome you to a list of them throughout the year. The arts forever have a home here, as do the world’s most renowned chefs and their creations. Step off the boat and know that you have arrived. How you will remember the Hamptons will be one thing. But: How will the Hamptons remember you?

ontauk is a place of 5,000 acres of beaches, give or take a few acres depending on the tides, of course. That’s a lot of sand, but it’s also a whole heap of relaxation just waiting to be claimed. Montauk, too, is an outdoorsman’s paradise. Fishing, whether ashore or at sea, ranges from passively inspiring to downright physically challenging. There’s horseback riding, birding, golfing, hiking, surfing, and just plain old sitting back and watching the yachts go racing by. Farmers markets run as regularly as free open air concerts in summer, and local history, spiced up a bit with some Teddy Roosevelt tales, is deep and engulfing. You’ll find Montauk by locating its old sandstone lighthouse, painted white over brown over white—the one George Washington ordered built in 1795. If you’re coming from Block Island, find the flashing green buoy marking Cerberus Shoal and round it to the south. Look ahead for a green-and-red bell buoy marked #7SR for Shagwong Reef. Beyond that, to the south-southwest, is the entrance to Lake Montauk, the local harbor. If you’re approaching from the southern side of Long Island, take a wide swing around Montauk Point. Watch
by John Galluzzo
for a green-and-red buoy marked “SR” for Shagwong Rock to the west-northwest, off Shagwong Point, and keep it to port as you head to the west, and look for the entrance to Lake Montauk. The area between Shagwong Reef and Shagwong Rock, including Washington Shoal, has minimum depths around 7½ feet at extreme low tides. If you’re at all worried about hitting bottom at those depths, take the extra few minutes to pass north of the buoy marking the reef. The channel leading into Lake Montauk is manmade. It’s about three miles west of Montauk Point, with an opening marked by a red-and-white “M” buoy. Due south of it, twin jetties funnel you in. The Montauk Coast Guard Station will stand in front of you, and the Star Island Yacht Club and Uihlein’s Marina provide transient dockage on the northern end of the lake. Montauk Marine stocks everything you need to replenish your supplies. Many people have traveled east by ground transportation to get where you are. To them, Montauk is “The End.” But for you, it’s the beginning. It’s your gateway to the Hamptons, Long Island and the summer of 2018.

his May, Gurney’s Resorts announced the addition of The Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina as the brand’s second property in the Hamptons. George Filopoulos of Metrovest Equities and Lloyd Goldman of BLDG Management, owners of Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, purchased the Montauk Yacht Club and are leading the transition of the property, a longtime institution in the region. With the new ownership comes a new name, Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club & Resort, expanding on the popular and successful Gurney’s brand, which is increasingly becoming synonymous with classic coastal destinations. The resort property expands Gurney’s footprint in Montauk. MEI Hospitality will manage and market Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club & Resort, as it does for Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, The Residences at Gurney’s, and Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina. The new owners arrive with a humble understanding of the facility’ place in the hearts and minds of the local residents, as well as those of the Hamptons’ many visitors. “The Montauk Yacht Club is respected in the Hamptons as much as in the yachting community,” said President and Owner George Filopoulos. “We’re looking forward to elevating the property and its

offerings for weddings, groups, and leisure guests, and to now creating opportunities for our guests between our resort and marina destinations in Montauk and Newport.” Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club & Resort will immediately upgrade the guest experience including enhanced food and beverage led by LDV Hospitality. LDV Hospitality’s acclaimed brands include Scarpetta Beach in the Hamptons and recently opened Scarpetta NoMad. The property will close in the winter of 2018-2019 to undergo an approximately $13 million property-wide upgrade to the 107 guestrooms, ballroom, meeting rooms, three restaurants, and 35-acre marina and grounds, all to be completed in time for the 2019 summer season. As the largest marina in the Hamptons and the second marina property for Gurney’s, the Yacht Club plans to deliver a full-service experience and fine food and beverage to the boating community. The new facility will only enhance the Montauk experience, bringing even more life to one of the East Coast’s premier seasonal resort communities. With the power of the Gurney’s brand behind it, the yacht club and resort will add to the allure of the area, and continue the long tradition of Montauk’s support of the boating community. ilford boasts one of the grandest oyster festivals in New England. This year, it’s Eddie Money big. It’s John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band big. It’s so big, there’ll be 40,000 oysters in 21 varieties from eight states. There’ll be enough for you and your crew. Milford, too, has a lively arts community and even a sand sculpture contest that is now generations old. There’s also a Pirate Weekend, built on the legend–or is it a historical fact?–that Captain Kidd buried treasure on Charles Island, connected to the mainland by a sandbar at low tide. To find Milford today, and take your shot at all that gold, locate the mouth of the Wepawaug River; the Wepawaug sits between the Housatonic River to the west and the Connecticut River to the east. The Wepawaug’s mouth is north of Long Island’s Port Jefferson, and it marks the entrance to Milford Harbor. Coming from the west along the Connecticut shoreline, you’ll find that long sandbar ending at Charles Island. Keep the #16 flashing red bell buoy, marking the end of the shoals extending off the island, to port, and enter the body of water known as “The Gulf.” If you’re
by John Galluzzo
coming from the east, you’ll spy a red #2 buoy that will clear you of Welches Point. From either angle, look toward the north for a red #4 buoy and the beginning of the channel that will guide you into Milford Harbor. Fort Trumbull Beach, off the port bow, and Gulf Beach, to starboard, will close in on you as you head for the jetties at the narrow entrance. Head upriver for Milford Landing near the head of the harbor. The marina, which caters specifically to transients, is easily discernible: a big brick headquarters building patriotically flying an American flag. Milford has always deftly avoided the pitfalls of American history. While neighboring cities chose the manufacturing boom during the Industrial Revolution as their hope for the future, Milford instead became the escape from industrialization. With beaches, restaurants, the arts and just the right amounts of history and mystery–and no congestion, no smog and quieter streets–Milford set itself up for the future we all appreciate today. Milford has the tallest flagpole in Connecticut, and the second-longest town green. The locals call it the “Small City with a Big Heart,” and it’s easy to see why.

ges ago, when Old Saybrook was young, it played a dual role. Like any good port city, it was there for the ships carrying cargo from around the world. But as it was also at the mouth of a major river that served as northern New England’s great conduit to the sea, Old Saybrook captured the goods floating downriver for transfer to the deep water sailing ships. As such, Old Saybrook became pretty proficient at welcoming strangers approaching from seaward. It even built the waterfront infrastructure in which the community takes pride today. Scanning eastward from the main passage out of Long Island Sound and westward along the Connecticut coast from New London and Mystic, you’ll find the mouth of the Connecticut River. Your journey to Old Saybrook begins there, at the Saybrook Outer Bar Channel, by the 125-year-old Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, known as the outer breakwater light. Find it to find the path between the breakwaters, the only trustworthy passage across the shifting sands at the mouth of the Connecticut. From the breakwater to the town, it’s a run of one and a half miles. At the green #5 buoy, Lynde Point will pass to port as you roll northward. Farther on, also to port, is South Cove. The deep channel swings past shallow rocks to the east and,

before you know it, Saybrook Point will be off to port. You can’t miss the Saybrook Point Inn, Marina and Spa, a firstclass facility as fine as any in New England waters. The marina considers your logistical needs--pump-outs, fuel, electricity--and your human desires. Food choices range from waterfront restaurants to grilling up your own specialties dockside. If it’s a swimming pool that you need, take your pick, indoors or outdoors. Vehicle rentals are nearby. Old Saybrook has fought hard to maintain its historic feel, and that’s ever apparent as one walks the revitalized Main Street (and, by the way, definitely consider the self-guided historic walking tour). It’s worked, too, to create open spaces that complement the Connecticut River marshes that The Nature Conservancy has listed as one of the “Last Great Places” on earth. There are historic sites, year-round live stage performances at a theater named for one of southern Connecticut’s most beloved actors, Kate Hepburn, shops, restaurants, golf, and more. It’s also equidistant from Boston and New York, so who knows who you might see popping into town? Old Saybrook blends modern with vintage, charming with hip, giving the transient boater every reason to make it an annual port of call. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

ou’re blockaded. The British have a chokehold on your trade, and you know, as a good resident of Essex fighting the War of 1812, that you need to do something. Luckily, you and your fellow Essex (then known as Potopaug) residents are expert shipbuilders. All you need to do is build small, fast ships to outrun the blockade. Call them “privateers”; by any name, they’ll help break the enemy-imposed economic strangulation. But the British get word. They send a force of 136 men in longboats six miles up the river from Long Island Sound, and raid the town. No one is hurt—but they seize every inch of rope the town has (sailing ships used it by the mile), confiscate any rum they can find, and burn the boats being built. And so goes probably the most exciting event in the history of Essex, one of the few American cities that can ever claim to have been attacked by a foreign enemy. The British followed a route similar to the one you will today. West of New London and east of New Haven, you’ll find Old Saybrook, and the entrance to the Connecticut River. The Saybrook Breakwater Light flashes green at the entrance to the Saybrook Outer Bar Channel. Lynde Point gives way on the west to South 52

Cove, and then Saybrook Point, where the Saybrook Shoal Channel begins. Be mindful of the no-wake zone enforcement in this area as you pass under two bridges. Note that, in the fall, the marshlands along the river are frequented by duck hunters; their blinds will be visible from your boat—steer clear in October and November, just to be safe. North of the I-95 bridge, be careful as you stick to the channel to the west of Calves Island, as there are numerous obstructions close to the edges. Stay as close to center as possible, and stick with the channel as it bends around to the northwest. Soon, you’ll be upon Essex, which will be bustling with small boats. The main channel continues northward, and a series of private aids leads into Essex Cove. Once again, be careful to stick to local posted speed limits. Once ashore, you can march right up to the same tavern that the British harassed in 1814, take in the many local museums, or just stroll the streets and check out the historic architecture. Essex—made up of three villages, Essex, Ivoryton and Centerbrook—has been called “the perfect small town,” a title that deserves scrutiny. You’re on the clock.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat
The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat is a must-visit for boaters of all ages docking in Connecticut’s Middlesex County this summer. This unique tourist venue boasts the only steam train and riverboat connection in the country and also is home to the oldest functional steam train in the country! Seasonal trips, special events and excursions are aplenty at Essex Station. The history of this locomotive is just as rich as the fun it provides. The Valley Railroad Company, which operates the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat, has been serving the lower Connecticut River Valley since 1971. Its mission is to keep alive the rich mechanical, industrial and transportation heritage of Connecticut through the continuing operation of vintage steam and diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, welcoming visitors from throughout Connecticut, New England and all over the world. 54

CaptainsGuide2018.indd 54
Visitors can explore the Connecticut River Valley from seats of this gorgeous passenger train as it takes the 2.5-hour journey from historic 1892 Essex Station to Deep River Landing on the Steam Train & Riverboat Connection. There, guests will hop onto the Becky Thatcher riverboat for a 1.25-hour cruise down the Connecticut River. Take in the natural beauty of the region from the decks of the Becky Thatcher and delight in historic regional sites, like Gillette Castle, the Goodspeed Opera House and Haddam Swing Bridge. Or choose to explore more of the region on foot with the Gillette Castle Connection! The train and boat connections aren’t the only thing Essex Steam Train has to offer! This unique tourist destination produces fun, themed seasonal events all summer long. Try the Sunset Cruises, Music on the Riverboat, the Rhythm by the Rails free outdoor concert series, a Chocolate & Wine Cruise, and the famed Essex Clipper Dinner Train--an elegant four-course meal served in beautifully restored 1920s Pullman diner cars pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive, as seen in the “Memorable Meals” section of USA Today. Just a short taxi ride from the marina, the Essex Steam Train has it all! Visit EssexSteamTrain.com for a full list of 2018 events, excursions and ticket sales

ystic has become synonymous with oceans, both for the creatures that live within them and the history of those of us who dare sail upon them. Not to be upstaged, neighboring Noank boasts the longest-running Memorial Day parade series in the United States and a historic community that is mostly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, when you visit the region, your exploration choices include “America and the Sea” or just straight-up patriotic America. To find Mystic and Noank, find Fishers Island and the sound that bears its name east of Long Island’s Orient Point and north of Gardiners Bay. Busy with rocks and shoals, the sound can be a dangerous place: Channel markers are more than just suggestions for this area. The sound heads in an east-northeast direction, toward the mainland. Once you’ve cleared the western end of Fishers Island and a pair of sandy islets called the North and South Dumplings, find a black-and-red marker over Intrepid Rock. North of the rock is Groton Long Point, and directly northeast of the buoy is a green #1 buoy marking the entrance to Mystic Harbor. The channel turns to the north. Red #2 will keep you
Mystic & Noank

clear of Swimming Rock, and green #3 sits near Planet Rock. If Noank and Spicer’s Marina are your destination, come around the western shore of Mouse Island and pick up the series of private aids that lead to West Cove. Spicer’s welcomes transients with dozens of berths and deep-water moorings, and technicians are ready for repairs, from engines to fiberglass. The marine store has everything from electronics to bottom paint. For Mystic, stay with the main channel and look for a red-and-green nun marked “MH” for Mystic Harbor. The channel turns slightly to port, passing red #6 to starboard. To port stands the old Morgan Point Lighthouse. Hug the coastline and the village of Noank and, as it heads northward, the channel swings east to avoid Sixpenny Island, before generally running northward again, with Mason Island to starboard. Once you’ve hit buoys 30 and 31, you’ll be alongside Willow Point and will be able to see Murphy Point to the northeast. From there, all points lead to fun—to beluga whales and “Moby Dick” readings, to Mystic Pizza and Noank lobster. Throw in some world-class casinos and deep Native American pride, and you can see why the “Mystic Places” of southern Connecticut have become year-round destinations. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

T
he local tourism council likes to describe Block Island as “Close to home, a world away.” Whoever coined that marketing phrase should be given a medal, or at least a free dinner somewhere on Spring Street, Block Island’s ambassadorial and welcoming waterfront roadway. There, you will find the differences that make the island “a world apart” from home. As Block Island is at the watery crossroads of New York and New England, it’s easy to find. If you’re coming out of Long Island Sound and into Block Island Sound, head east. If you’re coming west along the Rhode Island shore, pass Point Judith and head south-southwest. If you’re cruising up from New York City along the southern shore of Long Island, head east-northeast. Out there in the distance ahead of you--that’s Block. To find the island’s main anchorage and dockage, head for Block’s western shore, but proceed cautiously: The island is fringed by boulders and can shoal up quickly. For safety’s sake, give it about a half-mile berth all the way around. Once you’ve found the western side, you’ll easily locate the single opening, at Grace Point, two miles south-southwest of Block Island North Light. The channel leads into Great Salt Pond.
Block Island
by John Galluzzo
That channel is marked by a breakwater on the southwest side, which exhibits a light at its end. Clear the red #11 and green #12 buoys inside the harbor, and look for the biggest marina you can see, Champlin’s. Their crew is listening on channel 68 for your arrival, and Payne’s Dock is nearby, too, with its rocking Mahogany Shoals Bar. Spring Street is where the action is–the restaurants, the bars, the clubs–but, in fairness, it all depends on your definition of “action.” Block is small enough to be biked from end to end, but big enough to claim 17 miles of beaches. It’s got fantastic historic facades, two classic 19th century lighthouses, and so many miles of nature trails that The Nature Conservancy has dubbed it “One of the 12 Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere.” For wildlife lovers, it’s a mid-sea anomaly, a place where migrating birds that overshoot the southern New England coast in the dark of an early fall night come to land. The best advice to take to heart is to pack extra and flexibly. Block stays warm into the colder months, and the action–however you like it–just rolls on. You might choose to stay a bit longer than you thought when you set out. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

o matter how you look at it, there’s something stirring about a yacht race, with sails fully billowed out and spinnakers throwing splashes of color onto the mix of sky and sea blues. You could be standing in Newport as people rush past on the way to the International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony, an event at one of the decadent, celebrated Newport mansions, a music festival or a boat festival. Or you could be standing in Jamestown, where nobody is in a rush, and nature is king. Narragansett Bay, bracketed by such dichotomous variability, is the perfect summer playground for all. Northeast of Block Island and northwest of Martha’s Vineyard lies Aquidneck (the other name for the island Rhode Island), at the northern edge of Rhode Island Sound. The East Passage into Narragansett Bay bisects Brenton Point, the southwestern corner of Newport Neck, and Beavertail Point to its west, the southern tip of Conanicut Island, marked by a historic granite lighthouse with its many attendant Coast Guard-style buildings. Keep to the eastern side of the passage, clearing the red #6 bell buoy near Butter Ball Rock and the Castle Hill Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station to starboard.
Newport & Jamestown
by John Galluzzo
Run up the channel to the northeast, and take a turn to the southeast around historic Fort Adams and its dock (keep the fort in mind as you explore ashore; it’s a major entertainment venue). Look off to the east for the green #1 marker at the southern end of Goat Island (Brenton Cove will be due south) and follow the channel into Newport Harbor. The Newport Yachting Center is the biggest wharf you’ll see on the eastern shore. Be sure to watch for racing buoys, which are out all summer long, and won’t be on any charts. To reach Jamestown from the East Passage, cruise past Fort Adams, leaving it to starboard as you head north. Steer wide of the area known as the Dumplings off the Conanicut Island shore by staying outside the green #11 bell buoy, and watch for the channel markers to the northwest that will bring you into Jamestown. Even a short visit to the region can offer access to Newport bustle and Jamestown relaxation. Check out the historic windmill in Jamestown to think about how America got started, and then visit the Breakers in Newport to see how life was lived when America finally hit its stride. Or just sit and stare at the spinnakers. Nobody will judge you. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

he 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth is rapidly approaching, and the whole of southeastern Massachusetts is abuzz. And why not? It all began here. Bourne and Cataumet, at the opposite end of the Cape Cod Canal from Plymouth Rock, play an important role in the story of those days, as the birthplace of the free enterprise system in the New World. The world will be visiting in 2020. We’re advising you to get a head start. The canal towns are famous for much more, from fishing–President Grover Cleveland fished here so much that there’s an offshore ledge named after him–to food to relaxation. If you’re coming from Cape Cod Bay, enter the Cape Cod Canal from its eastern end, pass under all three bridges, then follow the channel to a red #2 buoy. Swing to port and head inside Wing’s Neck (look for the old lighthouse) toward Red Brook Harbor. If you’ve just come from Rhode Island Sound, approach the western end of the Cape Cod Canal. The main channel begins off the west end of Cuttyhunk, the last of the Elizabeth Islands chain. Run the entire 14 miles of the chain and, at the red #10 buoy, look

to the north-northeast for the Cleveland East Ledge Lighthouse, and keep it to starboard as you enter Cleveland Ledge Channel. Beyond the green #7 and red #8 buoys, watch to the northeast for a red #2 nun buoy that marks Southwest Ledge off Scraggy Neck. Keep it to starboard and head for Red Brook Harbor. To enter the harbor, find a red-and-green nun marking Eustis Rock, and when you do, look to the southeast for the channel that’ll swing you around the southern end and extensive shoaling of Bassett’s Island. To the southeast is Hospital Cove. Run a horseshoe pattern to buoys #10 and #11. Once you’ve passed the tip of Long Point off to starboard, turn your eyes to the east. The Kingman Yacht Center has 235 slips, 130 moorings and a restaurant facing sunsets over the harbor. Parker’s Boat Yard offers 130 moorings, nine slips, a full marine store, ice, fuel and showers, and even a half basketball court to stretch out those sea legs. From there, explore what the region has to offer, including the National Marine Life Center, Mass Maritime Academy, the Aptucxet Trading Post and some Cape Cod League Baseball. And don’t be surprised if you see some locals already dressed as Pilgrims. 2020 is coming. You’ve been warned. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

efining Cape Cod is not easy. Sure, there’s a canal, some lighthouses, plenty of sand, cranberries and lobsters. But there is so much more. The Cape was “discovered” by the outside world in the 1960s with the birth of the National Seashore, and to some travelers everything important about the region falls after that date. But take, for instance, the Barnstable County Fair, which turns 174 years old this year. The earliest European explorers found this place where the pitch pines meet the sandy shores in 1602. Cape Cod is older than you think. Hyannis is your gateway to discovering anything and everything between the Cape Cod Canal, the shifting sandbars of the “elbow” at Chatham and the far end of the Cape in Provincetown. Finding Hyannis is easy: slide into the wake of the ferry boats returning from Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. If you don’t happen to see one, and you’re coming from the west, split Horseshoe Shoal buoys #7 and #8, and watch for the red #2 buoy over Hodges Rock. Keep to the east of the rock by about 1.500 yards, and watch to the northeast for a red-and-white bell buoy marked “HH” for Hyannis Harbor. North of that marker, you’ll find the breakwater at
74
CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2018

the mouth of the harbor. If you’re coming from the east, stay well clear of Point Gammon and its abandoned lighthouse, as the approach can be quite rocky. Stay well south of Gazelle Rock, and even south of unmarked (but charted) Hallett’s Rock to the south of that. Refer to your NOAA number 13237 chart for safety. Find that same “HH” buoy and the breakwater. Hyannis Harbor passes into Lewis Bay, which makes up the northeast corner. In the northwestern corner of that bay, you’ll find the best places to tie up and get your foothold on a Cape Cod summer. Hyannis is as wonderful a welcome center as you will experience this summer. As a destination on its own, it’s got plenty of cache, including a large share of the Kennedy family mystique. It’s got a bustling calendar of events, with street festivals, car shows and more. And, like many local towns, it has its Cape Cod Baseball League team. Elite college kids who play here in the summer usually end up going pro. It’s got the Cape’s airport, ferries heading to the islands, and access to Route 6, which runs the Cape from end to end. And, in the end, it’s you who will define Cape Cod when your friends ask you, jealously, about your travels in the summer of 2018.

Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket
undreds of years of history are shared by Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, but they couldn’t be more different from each other. Even just the small space between them is enough to cause Darwinian-style dissimilarities. But, heck, it’s what makes island-hopping so much fun! Coming from the southwest of Martha’s Vineyard, look for the sandy bluffs known as Gay Head, marked by the red brick Gay Head Lighthouse. Stay north of the green #31 buoy in the sound to steer clear of the Devil’s Bridge rocks, home of an 1884 shipwreck. The channel heads to the northeast. Round the green #27 buoy marking the western end of the Middle Ground shoal area. Nine miles to the east-northeast, you’ll find the other, eastern end of that hazard, marked by a green-andred can. Find that and you’ve found West Chop. Swing your way southward between West Chop and East Chop, and you’ll find Vineyard Haven Harbor. For Oak Bluffs, as you leave Vineyard Haven Harbor, turn to starboard around East Chop, and the next harbor will appear quickly to the south-southeast, marked by jetties. Inside, you’ll find the Oak Bluffs Marina, the largest facility of its kind on Martha’s Vineyard. For Edgartown Harbor, cruise to the east-southeast

for a red #2 bell buoy, heeding the green-and-red can marking Squash Meadow to the north. The bell buoy will put you on the approach to Edgartown Harbor to the south. Follow the channel past #3, #4 and #6, keeping Cape Poge Light and the spit of sand known as Cape Poge Elbow to port as you go. Round the red #8 and head for the inner harbor, around Chappaquiddick Point. Due to shifting sands in this area, NOAA publishes a localized chart, No. 13238, to keep you safe. To find Nantucket, take the green #1 bell buoy, which marks a shipwreck off the east end of Tuckernuck Shoal, before making your move to the south-southeast. The channel that will take you into Nantucket Harbor will head to the southeast. Nantucket’s north shore will spread before you, and a red-and-white bell buoy marked “NB” will guide you into the dredged channel and into the harbor, past one of the island’s signature lighthouses at Brant Point. Your home on the Faraway Island, the Nantucket Boat Basin, is on the western side of the harbor. Oak Bluffs is counterbalanced by Sconset, downtown Nantucket by Edgartown. Seafood–as fresh as can be– is everywhere, and there is always a festival going on somewhere on the islands. Pick one, then hop to the next–and don’t worry about the order. You can’t go wrong.

eteorological consistency has its privileges. On average, the daily temperature on Antigua is between 75 and 85 degrees, with low humidity and near-constant breezes. The trade winds slightly diminish in September, and travelers can expect about 45 inches of rain throughout the year, usually in short, refreshing bursts. Antigua is the biggest and the sunniest of the 26 or so Leeward Islands that separate the Atlantic from the Caribbean. St. John is the biggest municipality on the island, home to about 40 percent of the island’s 80,000 residents, who have become tourism and hospitality experts through the years. That tourism is based on climate and escapism, but also a rich history. The Caribbean’s ancient peoples, the Ciboneys, Arawaks and Caribs, all lived here prior to European “discovery.” Christopher Columbus named the island in 1493 in honor of St. Mary of the Old Cathedral: Santa Maria de la Antigua. As the centuries progressed, it was the British who impacted the island most severely, harvesting sugarcane by use of slave labor imported
by John Galluzzo
from West Africa through the 17th and 18th centuries. Admiral Horatio Nelson identified English Harbour as a hurricane hole while in command of the naval dockyard there, and so it is today for ships’ captains three centuries later. But it was the West African families who had the last laugh, as today their celebratory culture dominates the island. Their sweat and tears are symbolically preserved today in the more than 100 windmills that populate the island, but their music, food and festiveness can be found everywhere. Luxury hotels rim the island, counterbalanced by open spaces like Indian Town National Park on the opposite end of the island from St. John. Miles of hiking trails lead through the natural habitats, with one stretching more than a mile to gorgeous Indian Town Point. Experiences can range from ziplines to beach parties to sunset dining on crystal-clear bays. But no matter what, it will take place in warm, sunny temps with light breezes. Meteorological consistency is, after all, a privilege, and not a right. Antiguans know they are more privileged than most, and they want to share their bounty with you.

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park
Nelson’s Dockyard is the oldest working dockyard in the world, dating back to the Georgian era. Admiral Horatio Nelson stayed here, in the Naval Officer’s House, which is still standing today, among many other fully restored historic buildings from the time period, which serve as shops and restaurants. Hiking trails lead from the dockyard to various historic military outposts throughout the biggest of the Antiguan national parks. English Harbour 268.481.5021 nationalparksantigua.com
Shirley Heights
For the past three decades, Shirley Heights has been a Sunday afternoon party venue, with steel bands starting at 4, and the main act arriving at 7 and playing until 10. But long before the steel drums began to ring out, the British set up a military lookout to keep an eye on the dockyard below, and to send signals to St. John.

This historic site, overseen by the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, hosts two restored windmill towers that tell the stories of the early days of British imperialism, and of Christopher Codrington, the mastermind behind the sugarcane empire of the island, visible across the island in the remains of 112 sugar mill towers. ANTIGUA AND AUA
A SAILING PARADISE AND A GREAT PLACE TO ATTEND MEDICAL SCHOOL
Antigua is a Caribbean paradise known to sailors from around the world, but within the medical community, it is also known for having a premier medical school, American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine. AUA recently received New York state approval for a period of seven years. As the university has secured the key accreditations required for eligible graduates to obtain medical licensure throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and India, the school plays a pivotal role in solving the world’s forecasted shortage of physicians. Included among these In the 2016-17 admissions cycle, there were approximately 53,042 applicants to US medical schools who offered only 21,030 seats. With a 40% acceptance rate, that means more than 32,000 qualified students are unable to attend US medical school. At the same time, by 2025 it is estimated that the United States will be facing a shortage of more than 90,000 physicians. AUA recognizes its social responsibility to respond to this crisis, while providing opportunities for qualified applicants
overlooked by US medical schools. Although the university is extremely proud of its internationally diverse community, 85% are such students from the United States. It is also one of only a few International medical schools approved by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in Federal Student Aid programs. The first two years of AUA’s comprehensive MD program take place on the university’s state-of-the-art campus and facilities in Antigua. Students then complete two years of clinical training at affiliated teaching hospitals throughout the United States, many of which are located in the New York metropolitan area. While a sailboat crew is often judged by the number of races it wins, the quality of a medical school should be evaluated by the success of its graduates. Close to 90% of AUA graduates have obtained competitive residency positions across the United States at prestigious institutions including the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, Brown University-Rhode Island Hospital, Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital, YaleNew Haven Hospital, and the University of Toronto, to name a few.
If you are interested in a career in medicine and would enjoy sailing Antigua’s pristine turquoise waters (with the little free time you’ll have), learn more about AUA College of medicine bywww.captainsguidemagazines.com visiting AUAMED.ORG CAPTAIN’S SEASIDE GUIDE 2018 83 CaptainsGuide2018.indd 83

CUSTOMS
All Americans traveling to and from the United States by air and sea must have a passport. For more information, visit the website of Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection at www.cbp.gov. There are four legal ports of entry for Antigua: English Harbour (268.460.1397), Jolly Harbour (268.462.7932), Heritage Quay (268.462.6403), and Deepwater Harbour (268.462.0814). In order to facilitate speedy customs processing, the customs department suggests that yachtsmen fill out their clearance document online via www.eSeaclear.com within 24 hours of arrival. If you don’t have a phone to call ahead to any of these customs and immigration sites, try them on VHF 16. Heritage Quay and Deepwater can be emailed at customs@ ab.gov.ag. For Codrington, Barbuda, call 268.460.0085. A permit is required to cruise Antigua and Barbuda waters, issued by the Port Authority at English Harbour (268.460.0085), Jolly Harbour (268.462.7931), and Deepwater Harbour (268.462.0050 or 0051). Last July, I was the winner of the Antigua Barbuda Hamptons Challenge which meant that me and 5 of my crew had won an “all expense paid” trip to Antigua with a boat to sail in Antigua Sailing Week. What could be better and what could be simpler? 6 people on their way to Antigua for the vacation of a lifetime. Simple, right? So, six months later, 14 of us ranging in age from 35 to 83 headed to Antigua to race in one of the world’s premiere regattas. We had a couple of dentists, a couple of insurance agents, a couple of architects, a manager of a roller skating rink, a vineyard owner, a ferry captain/ jazz trumpet player and a retired IBM tech guy, along with some friends and spouses. You see, once you are going to Antigua, others find a way to join you. I’ve known ASW for as long as I’ve been sailing. I read articles in sailing magazines for the last 50 years about this regatta. My first Antigua Sailing Week was 5 years ago. Since then, I’ve done 2 more plus the Classics. I’ve done a few different Caribbean regattas, but Antigua is the best! I did win a trip for 6, but before I knew it, I had friends booking rooms just asking, is there room on the boat. We ended up with half the people staying at the Ocean Point Resort and Spa, a beautiful “All Inclusive” on the north side of the island and the rest staying at Antigua Yacht Club. It worked out perfectly.

Lets get to the sailing part. In my experience, Antigua is windy all the time. You get out in the ocean and it is just perfect. Wind on, waves on. This is what sailing is all about. We were sailing a Beneteau 40.7 provided by OnDeck Antigua. Peter Anthony, the manager of OnDeck couldn’t be more helpful, checking in with us everyday to see how it was going. We even stole a couple of his employees (Sadik and Concord) for the windy days. I plan to steal them again next time (and there will be one). So it blew all week. It wears you out, but there is a built in layday on Wednesday, so you have a chance to regroup and recoup. The layday is great with a party at Pigeon Beach that includes dinghy races, tug O war, and lots of barbecue. Obviously, I would be talking more about the results if we had done better, but you can’t win ‘em all. We had a great time, and Antigua Sailing Week is, by far, the best Caribbean Regatta! ASW is definitely a “bucket list” regatta, but don’t wait that long! Sign up and race this years’ Antigua Barbuda Hamptons Challenge and if you can beat me and my team- next year YOU will be competing in Antigua! AntiguaBarbudaHamptonsChallenge.com

With multiple trails to follow through the park, sunscreen, a map and water are a must, but the prize at the end, the Devil’s Bridge, is worth the effort. Erosion created this naturally curved limestone arch, and, at their highest, the tides shoot rushes of water into geyserlike spouts through the porous rocks that dominate the area. Nestled at the extreme eastern shore of Antigua is this most rugged part of the island, where the prevailing subequatorial easterly winds push the waters of the Caribbean relentlessly into the exposed bedrock. Museum of Antigua and Barbuda
The story of Antigua and Barbuda reaches much further back than the arrival of European imperialist forces, though that tale is told well enough in the structure that houses the museum itself, a 1750 courthouse standing in memory of the British Empire. Inside are stone tools reaching back to the Archaic Age, telling the story of the islands from “geological birth to political independence.” Vibrant exhibits and a rich research library carry out this mission with flair. t. Thomas is one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but its history is as cosmopolitan as any island in the Caribbean. It winds through the stories of the native islanders, the Caribs, Ciboneys and Arawaks, and the various European nations that claimed it as their own over the centuries, or otherwise passed through: Spain, France, Great Britain, Holland, Denmark and Norway. Sir Francis Drake used the island’s heights to keep an eye on the Spanish shipping. A century and a half later, Blackbeard used the same tactic to locate his next prey. Hundreds of years of European settlement passed here before the United States came along. Ironically, the United States took control of the island as a buffer against the war then being fought in Europe, World War I. Landmarks across the island tell the story of its amazing past, like Fort Christian, built by the DanoNorwegians (they formed one country at the time) for military defense in the late 17th century. Skytsborg Tower, built by the same settlers, became famous as Blackbeard’s hangout, and it is the culminating reward
by John Galluzzo
for climbing the famous 99 Steps (actually, 103) built from the ballast of Dano-Norwegian ships. The island is only 32 square miles in size but cherishes such quirky historical elements as the oldest operating synagogue on U.S. soil and the childhood home of one of France’s most celebrated impressionist painters. Exploration outside of the capital city of Charlotte Amalie is a delight, but it must come with a subtle reminder: Most of the rental cars on the island are American, with steering wheels on the left, but the rules are Danish, which means driving on the left. The city has duty-free shopping, historic walking tours and more; search the island for beaches that range from hopping to secluded. Though devastated by the storms of 2017, St. Thomas beckons. The power is on, the attractions have reopened, and many of the hotels are back in working order. There’s plenty of rebuilding to go, but, as the tourism board has recently stated, the best way to support St. Thomas is to visit. The storms may have taken their toll, but the spirit of hospitality that defines the U.S. Virgin Islands will persevere.

he BVIs are open for business! Hurricanes Irma and Maria gave the islands a one-two punch in September 2017, staggering the local economy. But the people of the islands have rebounded. Business on the islands, of course, is tourism. “Over the last few months, our tourism season has come alive with vibrant events, property re-openings and new local initiatives, symbolic of a BVI renaissance,” said the islands’ director of tourism in a six-month post-hurricane update. Cruise ships have returned, restaurants have reopened, and the festive atmosphere has returned. As of press time, there are 552 landside hotel rooms open and more than three times that available offshore, in charter boat berths and cabins. The islands’ full lodging capacity will be available sometime in 2019. But the important thing is: The BVIs are open for business! The islands have their history, of course. The Arawaks and Caribs knew the islands well before Christopher Columbus first laid eyes on them in 1492. In his wake came the Dutch, Spanish, French, Danish and the British, who eventually gained full control of the islands. Like elsewhere
British Virgin Islands
by John Galluzzo
in the Caribbean, sugar plantations powered by the backs of West African slaves drove the economy. The British government abolished slavery in 1834, and the economy crashed, but what resulted was a melding of native, West African and British culture that today rests at the soul of the islands. Tortola is the hub, with Road Town the capital city, but each island has a story to tell, from Jost Van Dyke to Anegada to Virgin Gorda. The five territorial colors could not be more appropriate: blue for the ocean, yellow for the sun, white for the beaches, green for the lush vegetation on the hills, and red for the feisty nature of the islands themselves. The newest tourism tagline–“Nature’s Little Secrets”–perfectly reflect these choices, as do the favored activities of the BVIs: fishing, hiking, snorkeling, lounging on the beach, dining, kicking back to the sounds of the native fungi music ... the list goes on. For decades, the BVIs have been there for us, the cruisers, the open ocean yachtsmen and women. Every dollar we spend in the BVIs today speeds the islands’ recovery to what they once were, and more. The BVIs are open for business, ready to welcome you home. www.captainsguidemagazines.com

The Baths
Vertical batholiths hiding caverns and saltwater pools, all accessible by guiding handrails and ropes, define this National Park as one of the standout geological phenomena of a naturally rich group of islands. The best approach is by snorkel or dinghy, as precious coral reefs just offshore require protection, and also provide excuses to linger a few extra seconds in the beautiful waters. An offshore dinghy dock is strategically placed to limit the number of boats on the shore. Virgin Gorda
Virgin Islands Maritime Museum
Around the world, coastal people developed boats that suited their needs, the local currents and wave types. So it was with the “Tortola boat,” a trading sloop that helped expand the cultural influences felt on the islands. The Virgin Islands Maritime Museum tells its story, and many more, on the second floor of the Centre for Applied Marine Studies, keeping alive the rich maritime heritage of the islands. Dolphin Discovery
Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins make just about everybody smile, but when they take us into their world, they make us beam. Dolphin interactions at Dolphin Discovery start with handshakes, hugs and kisses, but continue with a foot push (two dolphins lift you by the soles of your feet and take you for a ride) and a dorsal tow. A dolphin tow can have you moving through the water at speeds you never imagined you’d reach without a jet ski. Prospect Reef Tortola, 998.193.3360 dolphindiscovery.com
J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens
The gardens were completely devastated by the hurricanes of September 2017, but the government announced just a few months later that National Parks across the region would be reinvigorated with $8.45 million, including the replanting of the gardens. Set in the heart of Road Town, the gardens represent the various habitats found on the islands, with collections of palm trees that line–and shade– the walkways, and flowering plants that attract the greenthroated Carib hummingbird. estled at the East End of Long Island, Sag Harbor is a gateway to the Hamptons, a place of scrimshaw-filled antique shops, where relaxation consists of watching America’s Cup contenders practice their craft offshore before a delectable dinner and a night at the local theater. And it’s a place where whaling lives, in the exhibits and programs at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. Two centuries ago, Sag Harbor was a place where the whaling industry more than lived, it thrived. It was the economic center of Long Island, long before Manhattan became what it is today. It was were young men from around the world gathered for a chance to board a vessel for an opportunity, just a chance, to get that foothold in the industry, to springboard to a life of fortune, possibly even fame. But when whales became scarce and increasingly difficult to chase, cornered in the northern climes of the Pacific, and when newly discovered resources produced products that phased out whale oil, investors pulled their capital from the industry. Money traveled west, to

the other end of the island. Old sea captains spent their declining years in the homes they built off their halcyon days. But history has a way of retracing its steps. As the Industrial Revolution drove some communities to build factory upon factory and fill their own air with the smog of progressiveness, others, like Sag Harbor, became respites from those places. The factory owners, a new monied class, found relaxation in Sag Harbor, its fresh air and its proximity to the sea. Those sea captains’ homes remain, today, quintessential pieces of Americana that define Sag Harbor today. There are walking tours and harbor excursions, places of untouched natural beauty, and museums that capture and interpret the past. Local theater attracts big-name talent from New York City. And what was once a Main Street-only business district has fanned out to the side streets, imploring exploration of the restaurants and shops. Robust preservation laws will keep Sag Harbor’s charm alive, yet cutting-edge cuisine and entertainment will always work its way in. The Sag Harbor of old lives on, welcoming the new.
