apture Mania is a photography magazine that’s been developed not only for photo enthusiasts but also for those who have a taste for capturing any modes of beauty, art and creativity. It has been designed mainly for those who want to take a deeper look at the history of photography and have a modern agenda. It’s not just an other addition to the wonderful world of online photography magazines but a complete package where a viewer can find the photography of his own choice, such as landsc t level keeping just one agenda in mind - to rest this unique kind of art into its rightful place on the pedestal. Another purpose behind this online publication is to allow the photographers to knock on their creative instincts and share their art and talent with the rest of the world. Nevertheless, it’s an opportunity for reknowned as well as not- so-famous photographers to submit their work and start building a name for themselves.

LEO DEEGAN

I

’m Leo Deegan. I’m an engineering manager in the San Francisco Bay Area by trade, but I’m also an avid photography hobbyist. These days, I primarily shoot with digital cameras, though I’ve recently rekindled my passion for do-it-myself B&W film development. So, lately, I’ve been having a blast lugging about a couple of circa-1970 rangefinders loaded with Tri-X 400TX. Photography has been a hobby of mine for many years, ever since my brother gave me a hand-me-down Pentax K1000 back in college. I grew an immediate fondness for it and carried it everywhere I went, whipping it out annoyingly at every possible occasion. (Not much has changed in that regard)

While street photography is my favorite genre, I also enjoy taking photos that showcase bokeh. I think of them as visual poems. It’s great fun taking shots with extremely shallow depths of field, but I especially like shots with subtle out-of-focus areas, since it allows more of the frame to participate in the narrative.

ith these images, I choose to tell stories of imagination and dreams. Not quite fact and not quite fiction, they represent the possible, the hopeful, sometimes the mysterious or even disturbing. While I find them everywhere, many come from Las Vegas, the surreal home of light, color, and perpetual motion. For many years, my photography was centered on travel and wildlife – more documentary than artistic in nature. After joining Google Plus in its early days, I was fortunate to find a community of photographers, some of whom graciously mentored me in the

was born in Lugo, Spain. Photography is my passion and I devote as much time as possible to it. My first camera was a compact Canon IXUS, and now I shoot with a Nikon D800E. The digital age gives us many options, but I have realized that I do not like pictures that are overly processed. I consider myself self-taught, although I have learned so much from other photographers; without their help I would never have reached the level I have today. I am passionate about landscape photography, but lately I have been doing quite a lot of social photography. For me, it’s the type of photography that best transmits my feelings and gives me the most joy. https://500px.com/alfonso1979,https://www. flickr.com/photos/braveheart1999/

ANJA WESSELS

M

y name is Anja Wessels. I’m a nature photographer living in Raalte in the Netherlands. In the past 3 years I went from buying my first DSLR to being a passionate, maybe even obsessed photographer. I love hiking, taking my camera and shooting everything I like. But I also love shooting flowers at home. My absolute favourite subjects are animals; visiting zoos and parks, making animal portraits -trying to grasp an emotion, an expression showing the beauty and personality of the animal. Back home, more fun starts with post processing the photos. Photography changed my life. This maybe sounds a bit extreme, but it is true. Like many these days, I ran through life, always in a hurry. I never took the time to really look and see all the beautiful things around me. Photography made me see, made me open my eyes. Seeing beauty makes life a lot more fun. I urge everybody to take up photography. You don’t need a state of the art camera. A smartphone does it too. Simply really look at the world around you and see the beauty that is there and … Enjoy!

It’s very important to me to work on my photography and post processing skills. I love learning new things. Working on photos, starting over and over, till I reach the effect I want is important. I’m showing a selection of my black and white animal portraits. Portraits of animals with a strong expression, emphasised by processing them in a dark background. y name is Barbara Manciulli, and I live in Piombino, a small town on the Tuscan Coast, in Italy. Since I was a young child I have been fascinated by every form of art, and with time I developed a passion for photography, which eventually turned into my own form of art. While I have always had a strong interest in photography, my dream came true two years ago when I started shooting photos and I began to discover its expressive power. I believe that besides HAVING technical skills, a photographer who wants to make a difference must be creative, sensitive, and passionate about his or her work. A great photographer must be able to tell a story and convey an emotion with their photos, not just show a beautiful image. My favorite subjects are landscapes,

hris McNaught has been a photographer since the early 1980s. He started with a Pentax K1000 and B&W film working for the school newspapers and yearbooks in junior high, high school and college. In 2006 he switched to digital, using a Canon DSLR. In the past year, Chris made the move to mirrorless and shoots a Fujifilm XT-1.

Chris is an international award winning photographer. His images have been recognized by the 2015 Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk (Top 10 Finalist) and by the Fujifilm X-World 5th Anniversary Photo Exhibit in Tokyo, Japan. “As a counselor, my role is to help people explore their world and discover their authentic self. This search for authenticity is part of my being, and part of my photography. Rather than just taking pictures, I want my images, editing and processing to match my personality. I work to reveal my character through the images I create. I believe the moments of the world are worth capturing and sharing with others. And I believe I have a unique perspective worth sharing, as do all photographers. For me, that unique perspective is one of minimalism and simplicity. As I’ve simplified my life, I’ve simplified my photography. This series of images is of the Owyhee Mountains in southwest Idaho. Although the mountains are long and big, I find myself drawn to the ‘small’ hidden details. The hazy summer air reveals hints of ridges adding depth to the quiet scene. Conversion to monochrome enhances the simplicity, allowing my imagination to travel through the mysterious landscape.”

FRANCYNE KUNKEL

M

y passion for the breathtaking Northern California coast is strongly evident in the photos I take. Not content with just documenting a subject, my moody images capture what I experience at the moment I see light hit the scene and complex emotions laying just below the surface are felt. I like that there is truth in a photograph and yet mystery is abundant. I am drawn to the strong contrast of the sea’s constant movement against the unmoving solidity of rock. Long exposure is a technique I use to slow down that movement to give it shape and softness that further accentuates the contrast. The intersection of light and darkness adds another level of contrast and speaks to my heart in a dynamic yet peaceful way.

GEORGE FLETCHER

M

y love for photography started with borrowing my Dad’s Leica Rangefinder camera and shooting slide film when I was about 12. Shortly thereafter I purchased my own SLR and used that until the early 2000’s when I switched to a digital P&S. That revolutionized the way I took pictures. From there I’ve continued to upgrade camera bodies until I now shoot with a Canon 6D. My photographic love is landscape, flowers, macros and pretty much anything to do with nature. My desire is to capture the beauty of God’s creation as I see it all around me and share it with others.

CLOUD RAYS AT DAWN ©george fletcher capturemania.com

This set of images focuses on long exposures and the different effects that can be achieved by leaving the shutter open for a “long” time. Long exposures can both create motion and remove it. For example, in the image titled “Beauty of Time” the long shutter time causes the crashing waves to become smooth and adds and element of quietness and peace to the image. Contrarily in the image titled “Cloud rays at Dawn” the long exposure captures the movement of the clouds and emphasizes it into the long rays. The great variety is what makes shooting with long exposures so fun. In order to try this you will definitely need a tripod and most likely a Neutral Density filter (removes light coming through the lens so the shutter can stay open longer without over exposing the image) as well as a remote shutter release. If your camera can shoot 30 sec exposures then you can sometime get by with out the remote shutter cable and just use the camera’s self timer. | URL: http://georgefletcher.photography CAPTURE MANIA | PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE | www.capturemania.com

JEAN MARC DELTOMBE the great French photographer Jean Michel Missri had asked me this question : How did you start and what is your philosophy of photography ?

S

ince childhood, I have always been deeply sensitive to photography and classical music in particular, certainly due to the influence of my father and many family members who played music. Thus, naturally, the photographic creative art has developed in parallel to my pictorial creation, which were themselves often subject to my musical sensitivity. I was fascinated by the photographs of my ancestors portraits, landscapes, scenes of life, some of them dating back to the late nineteenth century. I also felt like transmitting the photo¬graphic emotion of a moment, of the expression of a subject, a mood, a place or even a musical feeling that I could then highlight on a photo. So from childhood, I was introduced by my father to handle equipment which is now obsolete such as the Box, a camera with bellows that worked with wound good old films. At the age of 11, I was offered my first personal camera with basic functions that allowed me to make progress in the art of shooting until I was 16 and got my first reflex, the famous Canon AE1, which had just come out and which I have remained faithful to. In parallel to my classical studies, I blossomed attending courses at the Valenciennes Beaux- Arts practising oil painting and drawing while completing the art of photography. I continued the training process and creation of photography until the first years of my medical studies but to tell the truth, I am still devoted to them. From its birth, photography is considered an art as well as painting and sculpture. Aren’t the Fathers of photographic expression (Jacques Louis Mandé Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Henri Le Secq, Charles Marville, Charles Nègre former painters, designers and a sculptor. In other respects, not only does photography reproduce a reality otherwise it only aims to capture an object transferred by the reflection of light, but it also goes beyond thus generating a psychovisual emotion and all the techniques are naturally respectable and depend on the photographer’s sensitivity. Photographic art aims to confront the external reality, the photographer’s sensitivity and the sharing of emotion. CAPTURE MANIA | PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE | www.capturemania.com

was born in 1986 in Aix en Provence, south of France. I now live in Lyon since 9 years where I work as an account manager in an advertising agency. In my career, I have always been asked to be creative, find concepts, ideas, learn how to visually express an idea and build a real story from something that could seems insignificant. The vision I have of Photography is quite similar. I made the choice to shoot in order to tell and build a story. My aim is to beautify the everyday life. What I like with photography, especially with long exposure photography is that you can totally change the vision people have of a place and give that place a new dimension, more mystical, more aesthetic or poetic.

I am trying to use the processing techniques with a creative vision, to create, not only to make retouching. I am convinced that the creative process starts after capturing, at processing steps. Regarding my photography style, I am trying not to focus on one type of photography, to process my frames both in colour or black and white. The only guiding thread of my work being the long exposure, I do not want to get stuck in a monochromatic vision. | Link to : https://500px.com/kevinbessat

NATHAN WIRTH

N

athan Wirth is a self-learned photographer who uses a variety of techniques— including long exposure and infrared— to express his unending wonder for the fundamental fact of existence. Wirth focuses on the silences that we can sometimes perceive in between the incessant waves of sound that often dominate our perceptions of the world. Wirth earned both his BA and MA in English Literature from San Francisco State University and brings a deep appreciation of poetry to his explorations of place. Often returning to the same locations, Wirth seeks to explore the silence and the sublimity of those places. Poets such as George Oppen, Seamus Heaney, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, Mary Oliver, and Gary Snyder have played a fundamental role in shaping his attention to the things and places that he photographs. In addition to poetry, Wirth is

profoundly influenced by the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, Edward Hopper, and Camille Pissarro and the photography of Michael Kenna, Edward Weston, and Wright Morris. Recently, Wirth has been studying and integrating into his work Japanese traditions of Zen, rock gardens, and calligraphy– as well as the transience, impermanence, and imperfections of wabi-sabi. Wirth’s studies of Zen calligraphy and Zen writings have led him to the practice of trying to achieve, while working on his photography, a mind of no-mind (mu-shin no shin), a mind not preoccupied with emotions and thought, one that can, as freely as possible, simply create. Wirth makes his living teaching English composition at City College of San Francisco. A Quick Note Abut the Images All of these images were taken at Face Rock Beach, located in Bandon by the Sea on the Oregon coast. The images were captured at sunrise and sunset. There was an undeniable silence that resonated somewhere in-between the notes of crashing waves and the gentle breeze of the early spring wind that evening and morning. These images seek to recreate that silence. ©nathan wirth capturemania.com

There is a palpable stillness among these giants that stand with the ocean. I love the drama of contrasts – the diagonal sweep of sky over a horizontal sea – the boldness of the rocks in the softness of long exposure – the human who gives me visual perspective.

M

y name is Ron Elkind and I am privileged to live in Northern California. My passion is creating Fine Art and Travel photography. I first got hooked in my youth, when I bought my first camera while stationed in the army in Germany. I used my leave time to travel all over Europe and began photographing wherever I explored and have never stropped. My photographs invite a viewer to see and feel why I took the picture. I believe photography should elicit the emotions of the moment as well as visually tell their story. I studied Fine Art Photography at the Boca Raton Museum of Art for seven years where we were taught to capture our images through the viewfinder.

We were trained to understand the use of light, composition, color and balance, to draw the viewer’s eye into our images. I utilize that knowledge along with years of practical experience to each image I capture - each moment in time. I’m delighted to be sharing my big cats of Africa with CaptureMania this month. I was fortunate to find myself in Kenya last November. Travel-

ing across the savanna, hunting the big cats with my camera and long lens, I met some incredible creatures. I met and spent a couple of weeks getting to know the lions, leopards and cheetahs that are depicted here. There were so many stories - every hour of every day was filled with them I’ll let these photographs tell a few to you.

SONALI DALAL

F

ive years ago, a wonderful love story started, a date I can never forget and that remains etched in my memory: January 18th 2010. For the first time, I held a camera. My eyes suddenly opened to the beauty around; I could see beauty in people, in nature, in surrounding objects, and also in small things of life. My camera became a privileged vehicle for the expression of my vision. Photography became meditation for me. Since then, I have photographed the world not concentrating on any particular genre: any subject can interest me. As a hobbyist photographer, whether during my frequent travels in India or abroad, I love to capture the world in both its purity and abstraction.

Abstract photography has always been my first love: I feel pushed by an irresistible instinct to recreate. My fascination for this genre forces me to think beyond mundane, routine or usual eyesight: my abstract photos represent what I experience, feel, imagine, think and have even dreamt about. I believe it is best to leave interpretation of abstract photos to viewers and not give title them. Abstract photography is a visual art where both photographer and public share a perception, imagine a story, and can recreate the world; it is an immense joy to share it with my public.

©sonali dalal capturemania.com

I had many solo gallery and group shows and received grants from the government institution, Lalitkala Academy promoting art in India. My photographs adorn homes and educational institutes of India. I have many book covers to my credit. I collaborated with European artists, photographing their studios, installations, artworks in India. I won two Gold medals at the “73rd and 76th Photographic Salons, Japan”, in 2012 and 2015. I am planning to have more shows in the future, whether in India or abroad. A Post graduate in Law and Taxation, I am the Managing Director of an export house where imagination, innovation and creativity are religion and a constant source of inspiration.

T

he moment I saw my first Henri Cartier-Bresson photograph, I instantly fell in love with the genre of Street Photography. His images were timeless, magical and surreal. They are etched into my mind and I often found myself wondered about his subjects, about their lives and relationships. I have been Photographing my whole life, but I’ve only been shooting Street for the past 2 years. It allows me to see dreamscapes in crowded urban streets and paint with my camera. I love the idea of the decisive moment, but I also enjoy interpreting and processing my images,so they capture what I felt. ©teresa pilcher capturemania.com

My images often ask questions, rather than give answers, to allow the viewer to reach their own interpretations. Not unlike Cartier-Bresson, I favour one camera and one lens, which is my Sony A7/ 55mm. However, I’m not a technical photographer, my camera has become intuitive, an extension of myself so that I may capture my decisive moments. I see myself as an Artist, not just a Photographer. For me it is a Passion, a way of life. My camera is always with me when I walk out my front door. I love to travel as often as I can and capture the essence of a city and its people. I have recently built a website and currently write a Blog in which I aim to demystify the Photographic process. VINOD KALATHIL

I

am Vinod Kalathil, a Chicago based amateur photographer. Even though I was first introduced to photography as a child in the southern state of Kerala, India I didn’t actively start pursuing it until I started traveling a lot a couple of years ago. I have always been a very visual person and have come to love photography because it allows me to capture moments and interpret them in my own way, freezing or elongating time. My photography primarily focuses on natural landscapes and cityscapes illustrating the symbiotic relationship humanity has with nature. Even in the remotest areas of the world where the vastness of nature overwhelms you, I see the mark humanity has left – even in the form of footsteps on this beautiful earth. Through my photographs I try to tell the story of that often fragile relationship. CAPTURE MANIA | PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE | www.capturemania.com

These set of photos showcase something that is near and dear to me – the city of Chicago. I love how the city transforms itself through the seasons and from night and day like a living breathing organism. Especially the harsh winters with its blizzards, biting winds and sub-zero temperatures seem to have defined the hardiness of its people. Over the last couple of years I have found myself spending more time out in the early hours, at night and in stormy weather with my camera trying t | https://500px.com/vkalathil the transformation and people going about their everyday life.

I

have started to focus on My Photography hobby since 5 years ago. I like to shot landscapes, seascapes, and nightscapes, in color or black and white. I like to take pictures with a touch of mood in my pictures. So most of my pictures are in black and white to get that mood, even tough sometimes in color, if i feel that the mood is stronger than in black and white. How Are These

Photographs Related?

T

his is a question posed in my book, Critique - A Path To Exceptional Photography. This Collection is filled with photographs that cross many genres - yet every single photograph is related in very specific ways to each other. And it is these elements of relationship that have guided me on my own personal quest of becoming a really good photographer. The Collection was formed to support all photographers, regardless of their skill level, as they strive to grow their work. The principles are my road map to every shot I take.

Here is an excerpt from the book: I see many relational aspects. Start with the elements of impact. Each image uses strong color effectively. Our eye is drawn immediately to the light. There are prominent story telling aspects to each shot. None of these photographs were taken at eye level - they use perspective well. They are technically well done. The color balance in each is well rendered and adds quality to the photographs. The focus is appropriate - our eye is drawn in and easily finds the focal point where it can rest during exploration. These images have

good balance. The composition in each has used strong elements. They all have well defined shapes and lines. Each has a clear center of interest and everything else in the photograph contributes to the center of interest and makes it more powerful. My book is available in either print or eBook format. ELS OOMIS

M

y name is Els Oomis and I was born in 1958 in the Netherlands. Photography has been my passion since youth. In my younger years I was engaged in developing photographs from black/white film, so I experienced the transition from old school to digital photography very consciously. Since 1,5 years I focus on macro photography: a beautiful and versatile challenge that requires a lot of patience, technique and insight, which makes it a more difficult form of photography in my opinion. What I most enjoy shooting are water drops. Nature in particular attracts me, but people, cities and landscapes in general are also among the things I love to shoot.

When doing macro photography I use a tripod because of the shutter speed. When I shoot drops I program the camera on the tripod using life view, and then I shoot by using a remote or delayed-action shutter. I always take several photos using different settings. The best results came from using a low ISO and high diaphragm for a good depth of field. Unfortunately this setup goes together with a long shutter speed which is almost impossible to work with when it’s windy. A bit of luck is required for this challenge. I don’t do stacking. Everything is one-shot. If you want to see more of my photography, I would like to welcome you on my website. www.elsoomis.eu

My first memory of photography is seeing my uncle developing film at his home. I bought my first camera 18 years ago but I had a camera and no money to develop as many films as I wanted so many photographs from this age were lost in oblivion. AWAIS ALI SHEIKH

I

am Awais Ali Sheikh or you can call me a Nature Lover. By profession i am a Graphic designer and specialized in Game designing, but Photography is my passion or my love towards the creation of the Creator. During studies, photography was just a short course which was later became my hobby. But, I wanted to do something out of the box. Except from wedding photography or model shoots, which are common genres. From the very beginning, I was more interested in animals, birds and their behaviors and how they survive. So then later i use my skills to be a part of their lives. And to aware people that they are not just to live in cages or for hunting and shooting but they are part of us. When i came to this field there were few wildlife photographers in Pakistan and now, it’s almost 50 which shows that in a short span of time people are becoming aware to it.

Before i go to field, I do my homework, which includes regular visit on specific place and study the behavior of one specific bird or animal. After that you come to know about its activities, routines, eating habits, when they will migrate and their mating period after that with my camera eye, I capture my desired shoot. I study a lot about birds i.e.: from where they come, the time when they will migrate towards Pakistan, what environment do they prefer to live in etc. I keep all the information in my mind when I experiment these birds in the field. Birds are very good in judging a hunter so I use camouflage dress and even I dress my camera with a camouflage. In Pakistan there are over 750 bird’s species, but all these are scattered. And i have traveled to miles from north to south in search of them, and have experienced all weather conditions. Crossed the zero line, climbed to mountains, walked through desserts and many more. More or less i could say photography allows people to know about the beauty of nature which we fail to observe most of the time because of our daily routines and busy life. They are a part of us, do not hunt them inhumanly, but try to increase love for them and make their lives easy.

P

hotography has been a constant light in my life since my mother first taught me the ins and outs of a camera when I was very young. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Accountancy and beginning my early career as an auditor, I wanted more light in my life after working long hours into the night of our busy season. So I applied and was accepted in the unique school of photography, The Arcanum. Through this incredible program, I’ve grown as a photographer immensely and have embarked on a journey of learning and discovery through travel photography. My first leg of this journey was spending a month backpacking in Ireland and Iceland. The photos I have submitted today are from one little known location on this trip, Clare Island (Ireland), that I discovered as one of the most beautiful places on earth. | Portfolio: www.mollykatephoto.com www.portfolio.thingsthatkeepyoudreaming.com CAPTURE MANIA | PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE | www.capturemania.com

y aspect on photography is an expression of visual themes with intense emotional appeal. I use this form of art as a means to create an alternative reality. Each photo is a refined part of my vision about a whole new personalized world, the difference between what my eyes see and what is implemented in my mind. Many of them are prepared in monochrome tones and they are mostly based on evocative, moody and atmospheric themes.
