About Kitsch and the Timeless Exhibition: "Kitsch is passion's form of expression at all levels, and not the servant of “truth”. The work of the hand is self-revealing in the light of long-established norms. Sometimes your fate knows more than you do, when we stare into a great portrait like Rembrandts, we realize that fate is simply quite open. The great masters will always be found in the heliocentric." - Odd Nerdrum Kitsch painters understand rationalism, humanism, and beauty in their work. Kitsch is a superstructure within which beauty, skill, and passion can be rewarded. A place where one can have actual freedom, based on one's talent and hard work. A place where we can again be human and understand the human condition. A maker of kitsch operates not in accordance with the whims of their time but looks to cultures and canonized beauties of the past. Like a Renaissance painter or a Hellenistic sculptor, they work in a mythological landscape and develop archetypal images of love, death, birth, solitude, joy and nostalgia. Rather than being another art movement, Kitsch stands independent, with its own criteria for greatness, which are different from those of Art. This requires talent, skill, and the ability to tell a story with beautiful passages of light, to convey emotion. Composition, beauty and the longing for the eternal, timeless state, all play factors in the Kitsch paradigm. But even without the philosophy one sees the painting, one hears the orchestra and it is immediately felt and comprehended on an emotional rather than an intellectual level. Kitsch is synonymous with the drawing, painting and sculpture of the ancient Rome or the Greek poetica. Kitsch painters embrace the earnest, the sentimental, imitation, craft, and the timeless. Kitsch painters are not restricted to a particular time or date. They show the world in the eternal as it is “desired or feared”. Some of the most notable painters of Kitsch are Nerdrum’s students and family who have studied with the master in depth at the Nerdrum Studio. The Kitsch group works hard, creates exceptional work, and exhibits together around the world with exhibitions in Scandinavia, Europe, Asia, North and South America and Africa. It exists here and now. While people are debating about the re-appropriation of the word, whether or not it should or shouldn’t be, Kitsch painters keep painting the timeless and the eternal. Kitsch is what it is, and it is beautiful, important, and valuable, with or without permission. This exhibition offers a window into the very best of Kitsch on a World stage.

Odin Borgen (b. 1977) Norway Odin Borgen works as a visual artist in the classical figurative tradition, with an emphasis on oil paintings. He lives and works in Sarpsborg Norway. The theme of many of his motives extends to turning points, self-reflection, compas-sionate relationships and stops in life where time is obtained by reflection. Design and expression are rooted in the realistic tradition. He visualizes a space where reflection and observation are central and where the viewer is given open-ness to interpretation and reflection. The look is turned inwards and looks at the correspondence between an outer and inner, the individual's dance of life and the fragility of the individual's existence. The paintings are made in oil on canvas. Chiaroscuro is a common denominator for several of his works, which are again known from Leonard da Vinci and Caravaggio. Odin Borgen has studied drawing and painting at the university of South-Eastern Norway but has mainly acquired knowledge by studying under Odd Nerdrum and by studying old masters.

Scott Breton (b.1982) Australia Scott Breton is a figurative fine artist from Brisbane, Australia. After completing a science degree and contemplating a career in biotechnology, Scott committed fully to pursuing art, continuing a classically leaning arts education and practice begun much earlier. In 2012 Scott won the highly contested A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship, Australia’s largest national prize for developing the careers of traditional representational artists. This allowed Scott to do further study with contemporary classical artists in the US and Europe, and has contributed to his view of the relevance of Renaissance thinking and aesthetics in the Arts in the 21st century. Using a range of traditional drawing, painting and sculpting media as well as exploring digital counterparts to these, Scott sees plastic composition rather than any particular media as the core of the classical ethos. He is interested in how this sense of plasticity can be utilized by the contemporary artist. This endeavor seems to closely mirror a more general exploration of how the specifics of the contemporary human experience relate to and can be informed by insights about the human condition that have emerged across all of human history. To continue and expand his work in fine art education, Scott was a cofounder of The International Arts and Culture Group (TIAC Group) in 2016. www.tiacg.com, and now spends his time between Brisbane, Australia and Florence, Italy, working on his compositions and TIAC's arts education projects.

Daniel Enckell (b.1965) Finland Daniel Enckell is a Finnish full-time figurative painter. His works are symbolic and there is always a story between the lines. He is inspired by the existential problematics of the human condition. Daniel would define his method as representational allegory. His narrative expression is a declaration on behalf of people and humanity. A person is at their most genuine when they are born; naked and vulnerable. He cherishes this primitive state of mind also when he works. He tries to transcend the boundaries of time and has focused on permanence and the eternal.

Ali Hammad (b.1985) United Arab Emirates Ali Hammad, the second child of his parents, was born in at Quetta, Pakistan. Reared coincidently in a happy favorable circumstance where in his father (an English Professor) filled in with valuable and inspiring knowledge on art and literature. With the passage of time Ali’s appetite for drawing and painting whetted further. He ultimately was able to win a scholarship for the renowned National College of Arts, Lahore. He completed his graduation brilliantly in four years appended with “honor”. Ali from his childhood developed a penchant towards Old Masters. Art was something he loved the most. At college he explored different subjects like sculpture, drawing, art history design etc. A place where modern art was taught and practiced, Ali Hammad carried great interest for realism which went diametrically oppose to the existing vogue in drawing and painting . It was a challenging journey, he recalls, where he felt himself an anomaly. He graduated in 2006, magna cum laude and started his real journey in art. His aim has always been to explore the possibilities of paint, to make beautiful brushstrokes, to explore different tactile qualities and to seek the truth. The works of the masters like Rembrandt, Velasquez, Ilya Repin has always fascinated him. Constantly learning and getting better at how to paint like the masters with the delicate play of light and shade called Chiaroscuro remained his métier. He believes that learning is universal and making any kind of art without learning, is only limited. He has worked till now as an artist in United Arab Emirates, where teaching and studio practice keeps him busy. He has done many shows both in Pakistan and abroad. His still life’s which he usually terms “a quiet magic” as well as the figurative paintings both remain a strong passion with him. The renowned art collectors always look to him for his new pieces.

Ariane Krischke (b.1970) Germany Ariane Krischke, paintings are borne by a bizarre fantasy and great creative power. Each of her forms are all elaborated and exactly modelled. This unambiguousness is maintained regardless of the subject represented - the figure of a woman, the leaf, the tree. The literary aspect in Ariane´s work also has something tersely monumental, even if it deals with fairytale themes. Her drawings show her talent for a moved, harmonic flow of the lines and a playful rampant fantasy.

Martijn Caspar Swart (b.1982) United States The nature of painting has long been dear to my heart and even though I painted naively in my youth I've continued ever since to strive like hell in order to achieve my highest possible level of skill in the craft of painting. The human figure is the most universal language, which can evoke incredible empathy and emotion for people at all corners of the globe. Therefore it was the most natural subject of interest and pursuit as I sought teachers and techniques. After years of study independently, I joined the Juliette Aristides Atelier for Classical Figurative Painting. Upon graduating I gained a strong concept of human anatomy, design, and a rich lineage of tradition. I then travelled to Sweden to explore Humanist philosophies, ideals of Kitsch, and the practice of painting sophisticated narrative masterpieces with Odd Nerdrum. Here I found the Ancient Greek ideal nudes which portray godliness as all of humanities greatest virtues. Admiring the strengths, capacity, and love of humanity rather than the common modern themes of exploiting and celebrating weakness and destruction. My work is the arduous result in progress towards the pinnacle of glory in painting.

Utilizing various approaches of both old and new masters to formulate his mark, there is hardly a day that goes by where he can’t be found in his studio. Sertap YeÄ&#x;in (b.1974) Turkey Sertap YeÄ&#x;in was born in Erzurum. He Graduated in 1999 from Uludag University, School of Education, Art Education in Bursa. In 2003 he Received his MA in Painting from Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul. Sertap uses both the dynamics of classical painting and forces its limits. The painter following the tradition is not interested in everyday reality. In his paintings that demand emotional communication, the story becomes an instrument. The image that glided through the darkness, invites the audience to embark on their own journey. Sometimes a small sapling, sometimes an empty bird's nest or a lantern guides them on the journey. While time is flowing in an endless loop, the painter is not interested in ever-changing images. He prefers to look at permanent values, regardless of keeping a record in history. He translates the cases related to human nature; love, loyalty, acceptance, rebellion and struggle into the language of painting with the most naked forms.
