CHAIRMAN’S BIT By the time you read this we will have had three Committee meetings and your Committee has been working hard organising events for this year and 2012.

As always, if any member has an idea for an event, or somewhere they would like to visit, please let me or a member of the Committee know. There has also been a request from Adrian Denham, our webmaster that members send any photographs they may have taken at events to him for inclusion on our website. We have many Club members around the world that view the club website on a regular basis.
As mentioned by Barry in elsewhere in this issue, the Club Conference and AGM took place in early April. It was well attended and some interesting things were discussed. More importantly, though, I am sure you will join me in congratulating Jim Fleming on his election as Chairman of the Club. I am sure we all wish him well. More information about the Conference will be available in the next edition of the PP. Bentley Motor Cars gave a good presentation as did Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A presentation was given on the latter’s electric car Phantom EE 102EX. When it was launched to the world, it took the motoring press by storm. One report said it was the sort of thing Sir Henry Royce would have loved to see because, first and foremost, he was an electrical engineer. The Phantom EE is a fantastic car and if you would like to check it out go to www.electricluxury.com. It is well worth looking at. Hope to see you at events throughout the driving season.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Ruth and I have just experienced our first RREC Conference and AGM. Our own Chairman, Chris Ball, had suggested we might enjoy it. Bowing to his greater knowledge and experience, we agreed. There would be four of us, Chris and myself as delegates and Linda and Ruth as observers. We were welcomed on arrival by Hunt House staff and guided towards the conservatory. With registration complete and our conference packs collected, we had coffee and biscuits whilst meeting other delegates, some familiar faces and many not. After the conference welcome, we were split in to syndicates of ten people. At this point Ruth and I were separated from Chris and Linda and found ourselves with eight strange faces. Our appointed syndicate chairman was (Ted Meachem - Central Southern Section) and our minute taker (Darren Austin - Middlesex Section). In turn everyone introduced themselves and the debate of the listed topics began. Completely at ease by now, we found this very informative and constructive. Such was the authority of chairman Ted that we concluded our business some fifty minutes early giving Darren good time to tidy his minutes before presenting them to committee. Shortly afterwards we departed for the hotel and one by one, began to assemble in the bar for a bit of socialising. An informal dinner was at eight where banter was abound with firends we knew and others we had gained. Speeches were short (well Tony James’s would be), not that I am a giant of course! The wine flowed and a good time was had by all developing inter section relationships. Sunday followed with a ‘wash up’ meeting where our appointed minute takers revealed their syndicate findings to the management committee setting the agenda for the year to come. Next we were treated to a presentation by the ‘Press Bloke’ as he calls himself, Andrew Ball, from Rolls-Royces Motor Cars Limited which gave an excellent insight in to how the marque is designed and manufactured under its current BMW ownership at the Goodwood plant. Lunch was soon upon us, after which we departed for the Hunt House once more for the AGM at 14:30. With everything debated the day previous, this was largely a formality save for one or two items of any other business. The chairmanship was handed over to our very own Jim Fleming and some pre judged trophies presented. By 15:30 we were on our way home. In all, Ruth and I very much enjoyed the whole experience meeting other section members, Hunt House staff, our general secretary Julian Spencer and many others. It has made us feel more a part of the club appreciating that it is all about its members and everyone of them is welcome. Would we go again? We would, and if you have the opportunity to do so, we would highly recommend you take it, dispell any myths, meet lots of nice people and feel part of the bigger thing.

At Broadwell House, Broadwell, Rugby CV23 8HF Entrants and their guests may arrive from 10.30am onwards, and will be welcome to tea, coffee and biscuits on the lawn. After your picnic lunch there is an optional driving test in the afternoon which is great fun and based on normal driving ability and there is a cup for the winner. A toilet/washroom is available and is to disabled standard. Dogs are welcome if fully under control and on leads, as there may be sheep in the adjacent field and we have free range poultry. By prior arrangement (01926 812347) caravans may be brought. No charge will be made but a donation to WNAA would be appreciated. We look forward very much to welcoming you to Broadwell House Farm. Adrian and Linda Denham Sunday, 7 August 2011 - Summer Cheese and Wine David and Barbara Clarke’s, Canal House, Blisworth Arm, Northampton NN73EF David and Barbara Clarke have kindly invited the section to their delightful canal side home in Northamptonshire on the afternoon of 7 August between 1pm to 5pm for cheese and wine. Very generously, David and Barbara are providing the food and wine. However, they have asked that any proceeds be divided equally between Macmillan Nurses and the Cynthia Spencer Hospice. Therefore an entrance fee of £10.00 per adult is being charged (children under 12 go free). 6

Sunday 21st August 2011 - Ascott House and Gardens Wing, Near Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire, LU7 0PS Ascott House is a Jacobian farm house transformed by the de Rothschild family towards the end of the 19th century. The house contains an exceptional collection of paintings, furniture and oriental china. The gardens are beautifully laid out both formally and informally. There are some unusual features,e.g. the Eros fountain, the Dutch garden and the topiary sundial. We will enter by the Cricket Ground entrance and park in an avenue of trees alongside of the cricket ground itself. The Pavillion will be made available to us, very useful should it rain, and there will be a welcoming glass of Champagne or juice at the Pavillion from 12 midday. The house and gardens will be open from 2.00pm until 6.00pm. Admission to this event is £16.50 per head which will include a welcoming glass, entry to the house and garden and use of the pavilion. Wednesday 5th October 2011 - Leicester Bell Founders John Taylor & Co. The Bell Foundry, Freehold Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1AR An interesting look at the design and manufacturing of bells at one of the Country’s longest established founders, John Taylor & Co. They continue a long line of bellfounding that began back in the 14th Century where Johannes de Stafford was active only ten miles from the current site. Since 1784 the foundry has been in the hands of the Taylor family and in 1839 it settled in Loughborough. Taylors are proud to operate what is now the largest bell foundry in the world. We will begin with lunch at the pub next door around 12 Noon with the visit commencing around 2.00 p.m.. Parking for the duration will be in the Foundry car park (see address above). I do not as yet have an exact cost, but dependent upon numbers it will be around £10.00 per person for the visit, lunch in the pub will be at your own cost. David Davis Paulerspury Flyer - April 2011
