EDITOR’S Most people are born creative. As children, we revel in imaginary play, ask outlandish questions, draw blobs and call them dinosaurs. But over time, because of socialisation and formal education, a lot of us start to stifle those impulses. We learn to be warier of judgment, more cautious, more analytical. The world seems to divide into “creatives” and “non creatives,” and too many people consciously or unconsciously resign themselves to the latter category. And yet we know that creativity is essential to success in any discipline or industry. According to a recent IBM survey of chief executives around the world, it’s the most sought-after trait in leaders today. No one can deny that creative thinking has enabled the rise and continued success of countless companies, from small high street brands to stalwarts like Facebook and Google. Carbon is a platform to celebrate and champion creativity and editing this issue I’ve been so impressed by the innovative and creative outputs our young, hungry collaborators have produced. Yet it is interesting how little confidence they have in their own talents. Many of us who have a powerful creative drive refuse to let it become more than just a few occasional day dreams not because we lack creative capabilities, but because we lack the creative confidence necessary to do the work. We think to ourselves: “I can’t write a feature, I’m not a writer” or similar thoughts. The result is that we end up fulfilling the prophecy. We don’t feel like a writer, so we don’t write, which ensures that we don’t become a writer. So my job this issue has been to celebrate and praise the achievements of our photographers, writers and designers to instil in them some confidence to push forward and continue creating. If you like what you see then please help me champion these brilliant producers by popping on to our Instagram account or website and giving them all a pat on the back too. In a world where it is all to easy to criticise and knock people down let us be the generation that celebrates creativity, supports each other and boosts confidence at every opportunity – in doing that we will all be successful.

Starting a new decade we have to prepare for a lot of changes in the fashion industry to be kicked into gear. However, we can’t forget where all these design houses started and how far they’ve come from there. Here’s a look back at their history origin and a review of where they are now.

NOW Classed by many as a luxury brand, possibly one of the most iconic British clothing brands known worldwide. Burberry check is incorporated into as many items as the brand can use it for, from shoes to jackets. A lot of it’s clothing is more popular through the colder months with long trench coats and scarfs, though their bags are also very popular all year around being some of their most popular items. It also keeps to a fairly neutral palette with a pop of colour, most commonly red, being brought in for some items. Beloved and modelled by Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner really promotes the brand with their names being huge in the fashion industry right now.
First catching attention in 1972 when a young Gianni Versace designed and released his first line of clothing. It wouldn’t be till 1978 that he founds ‘Gianni Versace Donna’, more popularly known simply as Versace, this was also the year that the first Versace boutique opened in Milan. It’s bright colours and abstract were what made it really stand out against other design houses. Gianni’s younger sister also got involved bringing out two lines known as ‘Young Versace’ and ‘Versus’ which were released in the early 90s. After Gianni’s assassination in 1997 his older brother, Santo Versace took over as chairman of the design house before stepping down in 2004.
NOW Still recognised for the bold prints and bright colours, Versace hasn’t needed to change much as it’s different approach to fashions always kept it relevant and appealing. Though the brand has had to deal with a lot of high street knock-offs, nothing beats the original and it’s trustworthy high quality. Versace has also been collaborating more and more with other brands, most recently with Ford Motor Company for their men’s Fall 2019 collection. One of there most iconic pieces that has grown in popularity is their gold and black Barocco print products that really define the brand’s identity and is definitely what they are most well known for.

Founded by Thomas Burberry at the mere age of 21 in 1856 and stayed as a family owned and led business till 1955 when it was sold on to a corporate company. Thomas Burberry created the material gabardine which was is a unique blend to waterproof material to come on the market that was lightweight and easy to pair with other clothes. Gabardine is the still to this day one of the most iconic things to come from Burberry along with the trademarked Burberry check. In 1891, the first London store opened in 30 Haymarket which really brought in the higher demand from shoppers.

THEN Another Italian luxury brand recognised for it’s unusual and often themed designs. Moschino was founded by Franco Moschino in 1983, inspired by his love of fairies and dislike of the fashion industry and the way it functions, he even used it to create social awareness with issues that he felt needed more attention. It was almost reminiscent of pop art with some of it’s bright and contrasting choice of design and colour combination. Franco did sadly pass in 1994 and his assistant took on role of creative director of Moschino making sure Franco’s vision for the brand continued to live on.

Keeping it’s use of bright and unusual designs, Moschino seems to almost mock the fashion industry with it’s choice of print on products. A collection they created which definitely supports this idea is the Dollar Teddy Bear collection which has been repeatedly brought back for several years and is a graphic design of a teddy bear just surrounded by falling dollar bills, a design that to most brands wouldn’t be high fashion. There’s also two labels that are under the Moschino name which are ‘Boutique Moschino’ which provides clothes that are more appropriate for special events and ‘Love Moschino’, original ‘Moschino Jeans’, is slightly cheaper but still holds a price we’d expect from a luxury brand producing different but similar products as the parent company it stems from.

Name after founder Gabriella Chanel (also known as Coco Chanel), her designs were immediately successful with celebrities wearing them even though she was at the fresh age of 21 when she opened her first boutique in Paris. By 1915 Chanel had her reputation established in the fashion industry and opened a couture house in Biarritz, France. In 1921 the first Chanel fragrance was released known as Chanel N°5 which turned into the first of many fragrances to be released. In 1954, Chanel felt fashion was growing tired and now moving forward so she created a new age for fashion herself by designing new and different clothes that she felt defined a new era of fashion.
NOW Definitely a brand that people will spend their life saving for just to have something as simple as a handbag, Chanel is renowned for it’s high quality expensive products. Favouring using Lambskin for accessories, their clothes are often made of tweed and cotton for an elegant look. With endorsement from high status celebrities like the Kardashians having a love for Chanel, it’s really encouraged their followers to invest in the luxury brand. They have slowed down in perfume production last bringing out Chanel Gabrielle in 2017, the latest fragrance before that being Chanel Chance which was released in 2002. There’s no stopping Chanel and it’s popularity still continues to rise despite the high prices, they’re definitely worth the cost.

THEN One of the oldest Italian fashion brands, Gucci was founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921. Originally it was a design company which produced luggage for upperclass Italian wealth along with some equestrian products. Starting to create clothing, it was mainly of premium quality leather goods, silk goods, shoes and handbags. It wasn’t till the second world war they started using cotton and in this time the iconic “Double G” logo was created with two green stripes and a red bar between them. Gucci really started to be recognised in the 1950s when high status figures and celebrities started wearing the brand more and more, growing hugely in success.

NOW Maybe the first brand you might think of when a high end or luxury brand is mentioned in conversation. There products are worn more by people of all status’ and often people will save up just to buy a Gucci product as they brand is still highly thought of and praised for it’s different styling techniques. With more recent advertisement campaigns Gucci has started to style and combine products that would never usually be thought to be worn together, often described as improving “ugly” items by styling them in new ways which make them more appealing to the consumer. Their reputation keeps them relevant and their high quality continues to make them a reliable brand.

DESIGNER Katie Harrison, a 20-year-old BA(Hons) Fashion Design student at Solent University, reveals the details behind her upcoming collection to be shown at the Graduate Fashion Week in May and her progression forward into the Fashion Industry.
WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR COLLECTION FOR GRADUATE FASHION WEEK? “The collection has been inspired by the idea of multi-faceted people and how people show different sides of themselves to others depending on who they are and their relationship to them. The clothes have been designed to work in a multi-purpose sense representing multi-emotions and feelings within a person”
HOW DID YOU START DEVELOPING YOUR IDEAS LEADING TO THE COLLECTION?

“I began to collect images which would provide the main inspiration to my work, and also looked at shapes within those images to create the shapes you see within the garments themselves, the collective media allowed fme to produce a colour palette, another step towards an end product. Everything I collected as inspiration created the next stage towards my final production ideas, which I am still adapting and changing”

AMBITIONS WHAT DOES THE COLLECTION CONSIST OF? “The collection consists of multi-garmented outfits rather than just being a coat or a dress. One of my piece consists of a boiler suit with a attachable gilet over the top, as well as a jacket and skirt combo but with trousers underneath, which fulfils it’s ‘multi-purpose’ motive.
WHAT STEP IS YOUR NEXT STEP FROM GRADUATION? “I hope to obtain an internship, preferably in the design region rather than the making of the product. I would like to learn and develop more skills within the design sector, beforebgoing into a job, as I would feel more confident as I don’t feel as though I am there yet”
WHAT RESPONSE HAVE YOU HAD TO THE COLLECTION SO FAR?

HAVE YOU GOT ANY IDEAS PLANNED FOR FUTURE COLLECTIONS? “At this time, I don’t currently have any ideas for my next collection, however I am looking to expand this collection to become more commercial, ready for a high street adaptedrange, continuously finding new concepts to try”
“I have received extremely positive feedback so far from friends, amily and lecturers. As well as on social media. I have been given critical feedback from my lecturers which allows me to adapt my collection to fit the needs of the criteria, it is a constant working progress and there is always new ways

Following the shapewear renaissance, legginggs and workout bottoms that sculpt have become a favourite amongst the fashion set. The fashion agenda is being set by the most glowing and virile among us. Maybe it’s the constant presence of iPhone cameras that has us obsessed with working out or perhaps the shift is a natural counter-reaction to the hedonistic lifestyle of our teens - but whatever the reason wellness is now the ultimate luxury.

Zhou’s idea behind this catwalk came from the idea of futurism and science fiction which we have seen grown throughout his previous catwalks. This show in particular plays with the idea of a parallel universe, we can clearly see that the clothing is split in half in many of the designs, this is also mirrored in the hair and makeup. Half of the model's faces are painted and they have one contact in as well as half a head of coloured hair. This styling choice suggests two separate people from two separate universes. Another aspect that links to this split idea is the models' shoes, many of them have odd shoes supporting the idea of the same person in two different places. There are obvious streetwear and utility vibes to his work, the designs are confident, casual and
strong. They have evolved from the traditional rules of menswear and have moved into the future of men's fashion. As the catwalk went on more surprises were bought out showing lots of different styles, all fitting into the concentrated identity of the split universes. One stand out design was the digital print, this was used on items of clothing like a jacket and pants. Making the audience doubletake, this design could be slightly revealing, blending in with the skin to create a nude look. The darker pixelated pieces were also as visually interesting, the same digital print was recreated using makeup on the model's face, showing a connection of tech and fashion. Zhou uses colour well in his designs, this catwalk shows the use of vibrant blues and daring greens. The combination of these colours creates a modern and fun visual. A strange design choice was using zips in a zig-zag line, as well as buttons, this gives a quirky cool vibe to the designs making them remembered.

Zhou uses a layering technique within his clothes, this shows the audience how wearable his collection is. The looks can be worn as a whole but items of clothing could also be worn individually and combined with other items of clothing to create another incredible outfit.

The small playful changes throughout this catwalk make people look even closer to the design and styling. The strangeness of the method grabs people's attention and helps to get Xander Zhou’s name out.

This catwalk stood out at London Fashion Week Men's not only because of the garments but because of the idea behind it and the whole feel of the show.

INSTA-SHOP Girl Knows All Aiming towards people with more casual and comfortable styles. Girl Knows All produces clothes which work for a lot of styles, often featuring some form of printed design. The sweatshirts usually represent a city or state from within America, almost replicating designs that you might get on products when you are on vacation there. There’s also an aim of vintage that they achieve with products being produced to have a worn in effect. Severely underrated as a brand, Girl Knows All only has 16.1k followers on Instagram. However, they’re already reaching out to their target customers though providing a 15% student discount that can be redeemed through the app ‘Studentbeans’. Instagram influencers who have discovered the store also praise the products they’ve bought and regularly they post images of people wearing their clothing. They do have a focus towards sweaters and tees over anything else, although other products are available, there is fewer options to buy for bottoms and outerwear.

Pharaoh London

Another brand which focuses on using a more neutral palette, their clothes rarely go into bright colours. Pharaoh London mainly produces clothes that are designed to be worn in an oversized style. Print and embroidered designs are often something simple and bold but don’t break the neutral colours they keep to. The brand was born out of social media by Jemma Rochelle, originally she was inspired by vintage clothes but as Pharaoh London grew she wanted it to have more unique products. Designing them she wanted “fresh and dope” clothes which also really showed her support in empowering women even in the more subtle of ways. Immediately her products caught attention from popular Instagram influencers which increased awareness of Pharaoh London getting them up to 32.7k followers (on Instagram). If you sign up to be on the subscription list, you’re also able to get 10% off of your first order which also allows you buy and try some of their products getting a discount from the fairly priced items.

Nobody’s Child Forging the idea of a clothing brand being sustainable and bringing it to life, Nobody’s Child goes so far as to use leftover textiles from older clothing lines they’ve released in new lines so that as little as possible goes to waste. Nobody’s Child produces new modest but chic clothing while also spreading awareness of how fast fashion can exist and be sustainable. As their lines of clothing aren’t brought out seasonally, the products are released more frequently it means they always keep on trend which is a great idea as it means that the clothing is always up to date with what is the best to wear. While it does seem that Nobody’s Child have one main style it tends to stick with, they also have a wide range of clothing which cater to a lot of different types of styles and provides options for different sorts of occasions that their customers might be shopping for. Again the prices for their products are completely affordable and worth the price. Sale products are also hugely reduced meaning if you might not think you can fund the cost of a new dress, it’s still worth having a look to see if the sales can get you an even better deal.
sisters and seekers Created by two sisters a few years ago, although not new according to current standards of clothing business range. It is fairly successful with 136k followers on Instagram which is their main choice of platform for promotion. Sisters and Seekers started as a Depop store and eventually they formed their own online store accessible through any device, which stopped the limitations of only being able to access them through an app only phones can get. The clothes that they produce are exclusively of a neutral based palette using blacks, whites and nudes with a wide choice of materials used. They are also often materials that aren’t used as much in brands that shoppers recognise more, for example their ‘DNA’ shorts are made from towel. The prices are also very affordable and in competition with other brands Sisters and Seekers has high quality products that are well worth exploring as a lot of the products are items that people with a lot

Leopard Print
Leopard print... close to extinction or fiercely relevant? 42

Over done or the new neutral Leopard print. Now I’m almost certain that you could be forgiven for thinking that leopard print has had its time, soon to be superseded by a succession of alternative animal fabrics, but hear me out. From the high street, to runway shows and even in home décor, this versatile print seems to be everywhere at the moment. So often we see fashion trends come and go, almost as quickly as they arrived but not with leopard print, this trend is definitely here to stay. In fact, this popular print has been a much-loved constant in our wardrobes for decades. As early as 1947, Christian Dior became the first designer to put leopard print, instead of animal fur on the runway and from that day on it’s constantly evolving status means that it is still considered relevant today.
Typically, I know that I tend to shy away from bold patterns and prints in my fashion choices and I’m sure that many of you are the same. But why do we all seem to make an exception for leopard print? It has become such a universal trend across all ages and genders that I’m sure that if we were to look in our wardrobes right now, or through that pile of clothes on the bedroom floor, each and every one of us would find at least one item of clothing or accessory in this celebrated print including our mums, nans, brothers and possibly even a few dads out there! But seriously, such is the popularity of leopard today that it is almost as if the print is no longer seen as a print, but instead has become a neutral shade in its own right, sitting comfortably amongst the blacks, greys, nudes and whites that already flood our wardrobes.

Whilst in the past, wearers of leopard print may have been considered provocative, outrageous or even tacky (images of Pat Butcher, from Eastenders spring to mind), today the image associated with those who wear this print has shifted away from these once negative connotations, to be both edgy yet sophisticated in equal measures. This change in fortune can probably be aligned to haute couture brands, such as Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci, plus a wealth of others, producing luxury high-end products using the popular print, whether alone or contrasted with bold colours such as red and neon shades. As a result, we have seen numerous celebrity figures such as Kylie Jenner, Beyoncé, Anna Wintour and even Michelle Obama wearing outfits showcasing leopard print, which has elevated its status to become a fashion staple coveted by fashionistas everywhere. This love for all things leopard has even been extended to the male population, with celebrities such as Mark Ronson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne now following the trend. No longer is it just seen as the fabric of choice for ageing rock stars but has been embraced by those fashion conscious males amongst us, so much so that high street stores are stocking a whole range of products with men in mind, from shirts to jackets and even trousers.

Where is the line drawn between Winter fashion and spring? Where is the line drawn between winter fashion and spring? Overtime it has definitely become varied in many ways. Seasons are merging and the concept of defining a season may not be as important to shoppers as it was. It used to be that if you wore a dress in winter you were extremely daring but now, if you pair it with tights and a scarf its more of the norm. Seasons are merging and fast fashion is speeding up. Designers are now producing between four to six collections a year and high street stores for example: ‘Topshop’ have even launched their pre-autumn collections. As well as this other high street stores are increasing the number of collections released throughout the year. Because of this, there is plenty of clothing being produced and since this will include a lot of styles, we are seeing more of a varity out on the streets.
Whilst this is all going on, a new global market has been in design and overseas customers are being brought in. As the climate is different everywhere in the world, the brands have to consider their demographics when releasing a clothing line. They must think about who is buying their products, and where they come from. This allows them to adapt their products to different consumer needs. There are always clothes you have to buy now and still want to be able to wear in a few weeks or even months. Because of the dramatic temperature changes, designers are adapting their garments whilst also profiting off of accessories sales to go with these clothes. People are very individual, although they take inspiration from trends they do not always follow them. Some people like the idea of standing out and they continue this throughout the year. Therefore because of this it is ideal that brands have a mixture of merch which they can supply to more customers.

The celebrity #nomakeup selfie, it has now been around and in our lives for five whole internet years. We’re all still wowed by the level of “I woke up like this”-ness these women have accomplished. Everyone is so glowing in those pics, their skin is moisturized, their bare faces practically daring you do the same and just glow without makeup. But then there’s reality. As in, you probably don’t have the level of “I woke up like this” resources (i.e., money and time) that most of those women have to lean on for their natural look. Thankfully, there’s the nomakeup makeup look. A trusty illusion we are ever happy to have hidden in our minds. Here are some steps to help you create the perfect ‘no makeup, makeup look’
Primer Primer is an essential, as well as any moisturiser, this is because skincare is important and can decide how well your makeup is applied onto the skin. Keeping up with moisturising and primer is essential and in the long run will help your skin create a natural dewy look. Primer creates a layer between your skin and the product this therefore helps the makeup stay on the skin for longer. If you are wanting more coverage within this look then gently brush some BB cream or tinted moisturiser to your face to even out the skin tone as well as helping any issues such as dry skin.

eyebrows Now it’s time to highlight! This adds a dewy feature to this makeup look, adding a cream highlighter to your highest points of the cheekbone to create a lift. A sheer application can go a long way so a sheer application would be best. If you are wanting to achieve more ‘glow’ then add some powdered highlighter. Applying this highlighter gently to the brow bone can therefore add a lift to the brow and blend the look together. Continuing with the subtle appliance of makeup, highlighter can really help bring this look together, adding highlighter to your cupids bow and to the tip of your nose.

Baby hair waves frames the face better and gives the face a contoured look without using bronzer or concealer. Meal Plans
Planning your meals is a great way to save money. It stops you from buying extra food that you don’t need and helps you plan more affordable meals, rather than buying what looks good when you’re at the grocery store. It also has nutritional benefits as it will reduce the amount of takeouts you order giving you a chance to consider healthier alternatives. To start meal planning, take some time during the weekend to figure out what you want to eat for the next week or two. Then simply make a list of the ingredients you need and it should last you for however long you planned.

This may seem obvious but the statistics show that it isn’t. You’ll save a lot of money if you stop buying a drink every time you’re out or the multipacks of Coke you stock up every week. Bottled water is cheap – tap water is cheaper. When you’re eating out, your table could easily save £10 - £20 per meal just by drinking water instead of soft drinks. The £2’s and £3’s that you spend nearly everyday adds up, so by simply carrying around a bottle instead you’ll be saving tons.
The 30 day rule
If you’re considering making a large purchase, use the 30-day rule. If you still want it just as much after 30 days, then maybe it’s worth it. However, most of the time you’ll find that you no longer care about whatever it is you wanted. This eliminates spontaneous purchases made out of excitement or emotion. You can use this rule for anything, regardless of the price since at the end of the day everything adds up. Whether it be new clothes or beauty products, make sure you think about whether or not you’ll regret it when you’re tight on money.

Track your money
“What gets measured, gets managed.” – Peter Drucker. First try getting an understanding of where your money is being spent before trying to save it. It can be difficult to make changes and improve without the knowledge of the present situation with your personal finance. Luckily there are now apps that make this process much easier for you, so you can visually see where your funds are going. For example, Mint (free) and You Need A Budget (paid) are powerful resources able to track, categorize and analyze your spending habits. These services will help you establish your spending history and also monitor those habits moving forward.
Have at least one ‘no-spend’ day each week
You might think having a ‘no-spend’ day sounds easy, but it’s actually surprisingly difficult. If you really think about it, you probably spend money on at least one thing every day, even if it’s as small as a bus fare or a small snack while you’re out and about. Try and use some self-restraint to have at least one no-spend day each week. It’ll take some forward planning (like buying food in a weekly shop), but the psychological impact of learning not to spend money should mean you become a lot more careful with it in the long term!
Freeze your groceries
In the UK the average household bins around £700 worth of uneaten food a year! Planning meals can help cut back on that – but lots can be frozen to extend its life past the use-by date. You wouldn’t think that freezable foods include things such as bread, milk, pasta and wine! By freezing leftovers you’ve got a cheaper/healthier alternative to take-aways and shop-bought snacks, too. By making small changes like this you’ll start saving money quickly and will feel much better about yourself once you realise how much food you’re not wasting.

We all find ourselves stressed out during our life. It is perfectly normal and nothing to panic about. Stress differs in each individual, and whilst some techniques to alleviate stress may work wonders for some, not everyone will find it helpful. So here are several different methods and techniques for coping and dealing with stress. I bet at least one of them will help you! First on the list! CREATIVIT Y! -Painting has prooven to be very soothing to some. Just put on your favourite music and let the song guide your brush! -Buy a colouring book! (Yes, adult colouring books do exist) Colouring inside the lines can give you a feeling of control. -For all the makeup lovers out there, sit down and take the time to give yourself a full face, it may give you the confidence boost you need! -Write it down. Get your emotions out onto paper, letting your thoughts out of your head can really help you stop thinking about it. Try turning it into a creative piece, maybe a poem or short story for fun. Second on the list! EXERCISE! -Go for a run, let out all the frustration and stress and chanel it into your body. Feel the power you have! -Do some yoga! A very popular solution. But if you can’t afford to go to a real class, just get up a video on youtube and do it from the comfort of your own home! -Go for a walk. Let in the fresh air, loosen up your body. And bring along your furry friend if you have one! -Try something new! Go along to a sports club you haven’t tried before. Hockey, dance, football, netball, table tennis, the list of clubs is endless and you might just find one you really enjoy. Third on the list! REL AX! -Run yourself a nice hot bubble bath and light a few candles on the side with the lights down low. -Pamper yourself! Try a facemask, paint your toenails, do your hair and whatever else soothes you! -Read a book. Emmerse yourself in a fantasy world, your own little escape from reality. -Curl up in pyjamas and a blanket and get netflix up on your screen. You can never go wrong with netflix. -Make yourself a hot drink. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, whatever you prefer! -Spend time with your friends and family. A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE As we get further into 2020 we’ve probably forgotten about some of the unrealistic goals we had set for ourselves. Don’t beat yourself up over it since we’ve all been there, however what if there was an easier way to stick to your goals. Our beginners guide aims to provide you with minor habits you can change and improve to create a healthy and better lifestyle. This way you won’t feel as if your whole daily routine has to change and hopefully you’ll find it easier to adapt until it becomes natural for you!
When you wake up:

How many times do you tend to press snooze in the mornings? Three or four times? This is probably because you’ve placed your alarm right next to you so it’s easy for your tired state to just hit snooze and go back to sleep. To get rid of this habit, why not place your alarm on the other side of the room or at least somewhere you have to get out of bed to turn off. This way you’re already up so you might as well get ready and start your day. Don’t forget to make your bed straight away! It’ll prevent you from getting back into bed and studies show making your bed in the morning is like completing your first task of the day, therefore you’re more likely to have a productive day ahead.

Visual Cues:
Creating visual cues is a good habit to help you start doing more of what you want to consistently do. For example, leaving work out clothes in plain sight like your sofa will make you want to exercise more. Placing healthy snacks on your kitchen counter will make you reach out for a healthier alternative and placing vitamins on your dining table will remind you to take them daily instead of forgetting about them in your cabinet. You can do this with anything you want to do more of until it becomes a natural habit, as it is right in front of you in clear view you’re less likely to forget and it becomes easier for you.

Practice Gratitude:
Practicing gratitude doesn’t automatically mean getting a gratitude journal and writing three things you’re grateful for every single day, since sometimes you might not feel like doing that or not have time to do it. You can practice gratitude by just remembering to show appreciation for the life that you’re living, for the people that are in your life and for the things you have available to you that others don’t. For example, when you’re going to work be thankful for having a job that provides you income or if you have a loved one in your life, harbour on the fact that you have someone so strongly connected to you that you can count on. To start this habit, for one day have an intention to be more grateful throughout your day and see how your mindset and the world around you shifts.
Nutrients:
If you really want to have a healthy lifestyle you can’t get away from the diet side of things. This doesn’t mean no more chocolate ever again, of course you can treat yourself as long as you keep a balanced diet. This isn’t as scary as it sounds. A good tip to prevent you from eating junk food is making double or even triple of the healthy meals you prepare. This way the next day when you’re not in the mood to make something from scratch again and just want to order take out you’ll have a healthy alternative ready. It is also important to stay hydrated as this is not only good nutrients but it also helps keep your skin clear and overall maintains a healthy body. A lot of people forget to drink water throughout the day but keeping a water bottle next to your bed and carrying it with you for the rest of the day is a great way to get into the habit of drinking more water. Also by adding things like lemons or cucumbers to your water you might find it more appealing to drink.
Disconnect:
Take some time out of your day away from your phone and disconnect. It’s important to let your mind rest so you don’t become consumed by social media which can be a toxic and negative influence in your life if you use it too much. This can be challenging for some people as we have become comfortable and normalized being on our technology constantly. However a good habit to have some time away from your phone is to go on a walk and enjoy nature. If you have a dog and regularly go on walks, next time just leave your phone at home. If you prefer being inside why not take this time and do some meditation or some gentle exercise. Anything that will calm your mind can count and will show improvements to your lifestyle.

How to make your skin glow, while taking care for your mind, body and soul 76

Skin care starts from within I feel like most people think only about the products they use on their skin, when they hear “skin care.” However, having my experience in mind, I can definitely say that everything starts from the inside. Everyone of us goes through a lot of stressful situations, especially during our youth - choosing an university, preparing for exams, losing friends and loved ones… In some point all of that can reflect the way our skin looks and our overall health and no matter what products we use, if we don’t cope with that stress, nothing will change. The first thing you can do on the way to better looking skin is to start working out. You don’t have to necessary go to the gym, every kind of physical activity counts. Just don’t let yourself sit on a chair all day, cause that happens a lot when you are at school or working in an office. Even going for a walk for 30 minutes a day helps and it can also clear your mind, so you can focus better and work more afterwards.
All of the dairy products have a lot of benefits, but they also affect your skin and your body a lot. Cutting out milk was probably the best decision I have ever made. Not only most of my blemishes disappeared, but all of the bloating I used to have was gone. That’s why, with no doubt, I can say that cutting out dairy will be very beneficial to your overall look and feel. Remember to drink a lot of water every day as well. If that is really hard for you and you usually forget, try to have one glass of water on your nightstand. Drink it right after you wake up. That will help your digestion and will make you awake faster. Taking off your makeup completely is also very important. Don’t go to sleep with your makeup still on. I recommend to wash your face, not only every morning and before you go to bed, but before and after each workout. Change your full coverage foundation with something lighter, like BB or CC cream and try not to put on makeup every day, so you don’t clog in your pores. Exfoliate your face at least once a week to remove any dead cells and put on a hydrating face mask. But don’t overdo it, cause using too many products is not a good idea as well. The same goes for your body - exfoliate weekly and keep your skin soft, using lotion. For all the girls out there that have some stretch marks, like me, I’ll tell you a secret homemade body cream, that will definitely make them less visible. It includes cocoa butter, almond butter and lavender. Apply that after you get up and before you go to bed.

My final advice to you - if you feel like your skin is not in a good place and needs purifying, don’t immediately go to the drugstore and buy yourself tons of products and medicines. Ask yourself if your lifestyle is the reason why your skin is acting out first. Without being a dermatologist or a specialist, I can definitely say, that the skin care starts from within.
Thinking about what you eat is probably the most important thing. Find yourself a diet that suits you and I am not talking about a restrictive one. Include more protein, vegetables and complex carbs into your meals and don’t skip a meal. Try to eat at least 3 times a day and make breakfast your biggest meal, so you can have energy during the whole day. That won’t also stop you from reaching for something sweet and unhealthy. Of course, there is nothing bad with having treats and snacks every now and then. Just have balance. FEATURES I CARBON MAGAZINE

This may be an obvious answer to some, start caring for our enviroment, recycle, use resuable materials, pick up any rubbish that could poteiontally be a hazard to any animal but also for our own satisfaction. Volunteer! This is a nice physcial way of getting involved with helping the animals, volunteer at local zoo‘s animal shelters. This opportunity and way of learning about different animals and thier needs which will enlighten people of the things to do and don‘t in our environment ans way we can help these animals. Help restore the enviorment, this is as simple as planting trees, taking the time to clean up the beaches or helping clean the water. Habitat destruction is the main threat to 85 percent of all threatened and endangered species. Take a little responsibility and a few hours out of your day to make a massive difference for the animals in our world. Another way of helping the Wildlife is using our social platforms, there is a search enginge that every time you use it to google someting they plant a tree. The search enginge is called ECOSIA. This is such a small and perfect way of helping not only the environment but also the animals out. Another social platform for is a way of helping is Instagram accounts, if they reach a number of likes on thier posts they donate money to a variety of foundations, the money goes out to the care of the animals but also our enviornment.

With our money being spent elsewhere, our tastes are changing more; takeaways, gyms and specialist vaping shops were some categories that saw the largest increases in store openings and we’re moving away from traditional retailing.
Our high streets have been killed by the fact more of us care about the environment and are conscious on how much money we spend on fashion, as well as having easy access to these stores online from the comfort of our own homes, to the wider array of styles online compared to walking into a store and leaving empty-handed. We know what we want and if the high street doesn’t have it then we know we have other ways to get it.

pl anet EARTH IS Climate change is a very commented topic these days, but it has every right to be. It is probably going to become the biggest threat that humanity has ever faced, if we don’t start doing something about it really quickly. Most people, that want to help and care, have the wrong mindset. They believe, that this is a global problem and they can not change anything by themselves. However, that is not entirely true. Yes, one person can not stop completely climate change, but every action counts and it can influence others to make changes. We just have to be informed about what causes it and what we can do about it.
What causes it? The use of fossil fuels is maybe the biggest cause of global warming. Burning gas and coal produces a lot of carbon dioxide, which is thought to be the most dangerous greenhouse gas. Different ways of waste disposal also contributes to the greenhouse effect. Waste is released in the atmosphere, even in the ocean, which not only makes global warming worse, but kills big percentage of the animals and plants living there. The same goes for deforestation. Forests are natural habitat to a lot of living creatures, so cutting trees down basically leaves them homeless. Also, trees and plants in general absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The number of forests, which are cut off, is growing every year and there are less and less trees to regulate the climate. Last, but definitely not least, is the overconsumption. We want to consume our natural resources to excess and we also produce crazy amount of everything we can possibly think of. All the factories, intensive farming and automobiles pollute the air and are responsible for a lot of greenhouse gases. Switch to renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. This type of energy source is not only going to reduce global warming, but is getting cheaper each year. Help to remove one of the biggest causer of climate change by stopping the use of fossil fuels, coals and natural gas. Changing your diet is also a big change you can do, no matter how simple it sounds. The meat and the diary industry contribute to this massive problem in many ways. You don’t have to become vegan or vegetarian to make a difference, if that is not what you want to do. It is more than enough to cut your meat and diary intake in half, which can have a lot of positivities on your skin and digestion as well. The clothing sector is also one of the biggest producers of carbon dioxide, because of the amount of energy it uses. With fast fashion taking over the world, this problem is growing in the matter of days. That’s why you can try to restrict yourself from shopping that often and buy something only if you need it. Recycling the clothes you don’t need anymore is a good thing you can do or sharing them with family members and friends.
How can we contribute to stop it? Probably one on the easiest, but also one of the most effective things you can do, is to try using your car less. If you have the possibility, switch to an electric vehicle or get rid of your car completely. However, that is not something a lot of people can do. In that case you can use public transport as often as you can or share a car ride with friends and family. Use your bike to go places or try walking. No matter which one you chose, it would be better than using your car everyday. 86

There are a lot of other stuff you can do, when you want to help the fight against global warming. Just start with something small and grow it from there. No matter what you do for living, climate change will have a big effect on your life. That’s why you should never forget that your actions can have a positive, as well as negative impact on the environment.

With many Celebrities and Brands finding ways to show their support in response to the horrific bushfires across Australia, they have devise plans to use their brands to create the largest amount of profits to donate. Balenciaga, being the well known Spanish Haute Couture house that it is, created their own line directly in response to the disasters. They released a koala- themed collection - with all proceeds being donated to local conservation organisations, specifically selected by Balenciaga’s Sustainability experts and the Kering Group (The parent Fashion house of luxury brands including Balenciaga). The Kering Group also made a $1 million AUD donation to the event that has killed an estimated 1/2 billion animals and destroyed more than 2,000 homes.

Californian based brand Allen Schwartz announced that on the 9th January for 24 hours, all profits would be donated to WIRES Wildlife Rescue, Australian bohemian brand Camilla had a similar concept with 100% of proceeds from an archival auction on the 10th January would be donated, plus 10% of all new collection sales will also be donated until the 15th January.

Also, Australian self tan brand Bondi Sands donated $100,000 AU to the organisation, whilst they also created 2 reusable frank green products ( a reusable coffee cup and bottle) with 100% of proceeds being donated to the Red Cross. The brand created a branding strategy for these 2 products with title of ‘Lets reuse to rebuild’, which also contributes to less plastic and harmful material wastage. Many celebrities have also made their own donations to show their support. Kylie Jenner donated a big sum of $1 million USD of her billionaire fortune, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental organisation Earth Alliance responded by donating $3 million US to the crisis, whilst also launching the #AustraliaWildfire fund as an ‘international response’ for everyone who wishes to donate. Fortunately there are many generous people who either donated, showed support or volunteered to help the organisations with the aim to stop their horrendous wildfires causing anymore devastation from all around the world.

blue light glasses Blue light can travel to the back of the eye and cause damage, too much exposure to blue light can potentially harm light sensitive cells in the retina. When trying to sleep blue light also confuses your brain to think its daytime, this alterers your sleeping pattern and reduces sleeping time. Screens are becoming more and more necessary for work and every day life, this causes an increase in exposure of blue light and there is a greater risk of damage to the eye which could lead to blindness. There are a couple of ways that we can reduce the risk of eye strain like taking breaks or changing the device background to warmer colours. Another way that has been proved helpful is purchasing a pair of blue light blocking glasses:

They would usually be worn when looking at screens, most adults need to look at a computer for work all day so these glasses would be perfect to protect their eyes. The evidence that supports these gasses helping with eye strain is low, however many users have stated that after using blue light blocking glasses for a couple of months their eyes have felt less tired. There are many different opinions on these glasses and the scientific reasoning behind them is sparse, numerous users have loved these glasses and claim they have made a large difference to their life. It also boosts alertness, improves memory and lifts your moods. On the other hand, artificial blue light comes from electronic screens like your phone or computer. Using these devices all day could cause eye strain and headaches in addition to affecting visual differences.

Currently one of the most popular apps on the phone market right now, TikTok is currently taking over the world. If you’re unaware of the massive success from the app right now, you may be wondering, “what is TikTok?”. TikTok is an app which you can get on your smartphone, where you can create and share short videos; a form of social media. Looking at how TikTok has risen to the top of the game, will TikTok’s fame carry on throughout the years or will it suddenly fall to its inevitable death, much like Vine for instance. The app TikTok is currently owned by a company named ByteDance, who are a Beijing-based internet technology company, who were founded in 2012. The company serve their products worldwide and have a small list of other brands in which they have created, but none come to match to the popularity of their goldmine - TikTok.

Before TikTok was a thing, Musical.ly was an app that did a similar kind of thing, but didn’t reach the heights in the way which TikTok currently is. Released in August 2014 by founders Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang, users were able to create and share short videos where they could lip-sync to songs that were played on top of the video, so very much like TikTok nowadays. By the end of May in 2017, the app had over 200 million registered users, but wasn’t doing as well as it could be doing on the current market. This resulted in the founders selling the app to ByteDance for a rumoured eye-watering $1billion USD, where the app was merged in to what we now know as TikTok. The users who already had accounts on Musical.ly
With it being announced in 2019 that TikTok was the seventh most downloaded mobile app of the decade, even though the app had officially been around for three years, this clearly showed how dominant TikTok has been in today’s social media market. With trends on the app making songs popular and therefore giving artists free marketing in a sense, or from old grandparents dancing and going viral, TikTok is full over never-ending videos which never fail to impress its target audience, or the world for the matter. Brands and businesses have also jumped on the TikTok bandwagon, with the NFL securing one of the biggest partnerships with the app in its history, where official NFL content will be brought

On the other hand, Douyin is currently one of the most popular apps on the Chinese app stores, with this being the alternative to TikTok in China. This is due to the strict Chinese censorship laws in the country, but it is even more popular than TikTok itself, with Douyin achieving the stat of a whopping 400 million active users every day, meaning that over one in three people use the Douyin app. This was revealed in their annual report at the start of 2020, which is a very impressive growth compared to last January when they had 250 million daily users. The stats clearly show that this app has no chance of slowing down any time soon.

It was released in 2013 and by December 2015 at its peak, Vine had over 200 million users active on the app, but in December 2016 after Twitter acquired the app they announced that the app would no longer be operational. They decided that people should make and upload short videos straight to Twitter instead, with this coming to a massive shock to fans of the beloved app. With TikTok currently at its peak and surely going to continue growing at an outstanding rate throughout the next year, a lot of social media influencers and brands are starting to invest their time, money and effort in to the TikTok business. On the other hand, with the whole Vine situation, this goes to show that if the right amount of money or offer comes along, would TikTok be safe?

Definitely. My family and close friends mean everything to me! They have been great through all parts of my life as well as this lovely unexpected experience! Looking back on your younger self, when you said you didn’t have anyone of your shape to look up to, with what you know and how you feel now, what would you tell yourself?
“It felt like a very safe place to be a woman.” When did you realise you wanted to be a model? I have loved performing since I was a baby and having trained as a dancer, modelling for me is another way to transform by still having fun. You could be transformed into anything! So it is something I have always wanted to be able to do. What was it like taking part in the New Icons Model Search? I had such a magical day, it was like nothing I have ever done before. It was nice to be in a sort of bubble with the other girls talking through our positive and negative life experiences. It felt like a very safe place to be a woman.

I would tell myself to relax a bit more. It was really hard for me to get to the fun parts of going out because I did feel so conscious of how I looked, so I feel if I saw people more like myself publicly it would have eased my nerves massively.

Everybody has heard of some kind of conspiracy theory,small or big, personal or famous whether if you believe it or not, you have to admit some are very convincing with the amount of deatils coming with it. Some may be true some may be just in our heads and stretched the evidence, who knows?

This theory was brought into attention in in the early 2000’s and continues to resurface up each year as we develop our technological skills, The theory is about where people believed that we all are living in a digital game/ stimulation and being controlled by other people, playing us as characters.
If you watch or never have watched The Simpsons, you’ve surely come across the conspiracy theory of the cartoon series predicting the future. Pedicitng future events, new technology and many other weird detailed coindenes, or not coindience?
How many times have you walked into a room and forgot why you walked into it? or done something that was out of the ordinary and then questioned yourself about it later on? This theory has similarities to the SIMS game that people have linked together.
The most talked about future prediction was the election of Donald Trump as president, the series was aired years before any of the whole presidency situation even came about. There was no explaination to how they would know this would have actually taken place.
Another part about living in a stimulation is the argument of the mandala effect, which confuses thousands of people, remebering something being a specific way or spelling but then finding out it’s not been that way from the beginning yet everybody remembers a different version of the item/person etc. This is a big argument of the thoery about the stimulation and glitches within the game. Kinda creepy huh?
Second prediction was the Siegfried and Roy Tiger Attack, in 1993 on the show both the charcters got attacked by their trustworthy tiger, now anybody who knew these two would know they had an amazing bond with the tiger. Weirdly enough in 2003 Roy was attacked by the tiger on a live performance, he was injured but surivied the attack. Coincidence or what?
Whether you believe it or not, this theory has some questionable ideas abouwt it. if you, me and every person and thing in the cosmos were actually characters in some giant computer game, we would not necessarily know it. The idea that the universe is a simulation sounds more like the plot of “The Matrix,” but it is also a legitimate scientific hypothesis.
Another prediction Smart Watches, Sorry Apple, but “The Simpsons” had smart watches first. In a 1995 episode in which the show is set in the future, Lisa’s husband is shown speaking to a phone on his wrist. The first smartwatch wasn’t created until 2013. These are a small fraction of the future predictions that “The Simpsons” have done, there are plenty more events and things that cannot be a coindidence when it’s 3+ things in the future.

Celebrities who have apparently done this include Jim Morrison, who was found dead aged 27 in a Paris hotel room by his girlfriend in 1971. It is claimed there was no autopsy and he had a closed casket funeral. Elvis Presley died in 1977 at his Graceland home, but despite having an open coffin funeral, some believe that he was replaced with a waxwork. His family have asked that his autopsy report remain sealed until 2027 so we have a long time to wait to discover the truth. Tupac, who was shot dead in Las Vegas in a gangland murder in 1996, has been repeatedly “seen” since his death at the age of 25 and is apparently living a new life in Cuba. Suspicions were raised further when a photograph of a man who looks incredibly like the tragic star was also circulated online. While all these points can be taken into account this theory can mostly be just a bunch of upset fans trying to make it that their idol is actually alive, there isn’t much proof about these celebrities but some key details are questionable and this theory may be true for one or two of the celebrities, who knows? Maybe one day we will all find out.
4. JOHN DILLINGER This theory is for all the crime theory/documentary lovers, during the 1930s, Indiana born John Dillinger became a national sensation and was named public enemy No. 1. He was wanted for the armed robbery of over 10 banks throughout Indiana and for stealing over $300,000. When he was arrested, he escaped prison by carving a gun out of wood and tricking the guards into letting him go. He then had facial surgery to become unrecognizable. He was killed in an alley in 1934 after the FBI put out a $100,000 reward for him. This is where the conspiracy theories begin. Some believe Dillinger was not killed in the alley because of rumors that said the body had brown eyes while Dillinger famously had gray eyes. The body also had signs of illnesses the famous robber was never known to have. In 1963, The Indianapolis Star received a letter from someone claiming to be Dillinger, leaving many to believe that the criminal survived throughout the 1900s. Now in this theory there is a lot of deatils which can be questioned, this theory can work both ways and many people do believe that John Dillinger did escape and lived, there isn’t much other proof about this but it may be true.

Vogue Looking at dressing vintage from the 90’s to now...
Wearing old clothes together to create new looks first became a trend in the 1990’s grunge scene. Army surplus gear and flannel shirts from thrift stores were wardrobe staples. By time it got to the 2000’s the dressed-down hobo look of grunge had evolved into boho reffering to a group of 18th century French artists who lived cheaply but with great style. Fashionistas prided themselves on finding bargain designer pieces from past decades. It suddenly became more stylish to have a vintage Chanel jacket than a new one. Summer music festivals became a stage for dressed-down vintage looks, such as shorts and welly boots teamed with a hippy poncho from the 60’s or a 70’s t-shirt. As women trawled thrift shops, markets, and upmarket secondhand boutiques, fashion houses such as Dior and Gucci delved into their archives for inspiration from the past.

1993 Perry Ellis Spring - The grunge collection Marc Jacobs picked up on the trend of flannel shirts and printed dresses creating a thrift shop aesthetic, therefore he sent it down the runway for Perry Ellis and his own collection. This was the collection that got Marc Jacbobs fired from Perry Ellis, but also the show that made his career. This collection however soon became seen as pretty cool and Jacobs re-created for other labels he launched with his partner Robert Duffy. 110

Fred Perry is one of the most influential people within this fashion industry, with his name widely known across the globe. From starting off as a tennis player, and then venturing in to the clothing industry, he is someone who is highly regarded in today’s society by tennis and fashion fans alike. Full name Frederick John Perry, Fred was born on the 18th May 1909 in Stockport, just on the outskirts of Manchester, in the UK. His father Samuel Perry specialised in the production of yarn from cotton, used in items of clothing and many other things, which was important within the coming years due to the start of the war. After moving to Ealing, West London, his father became a national secretary of The Co-operative Party, and Fred then attended Ealing Grammar School for Boys. This is where he started playing tennis as a child; on public courts near where the Perry family resided, taking a massive interest in the sport at such a young age. As well as a start in a career in tennis, at the age of nineteen he won various medals in the World Table Tennis Championships, with himself known for being rapid in his attack of the ball. Then deciding to solely focus on tennis instead, he competed in the US, Australian and French amateur championships, whilst also winning the men’s Wimbledon title for three years in a row from 1934 tom 1936. This was when he regarded as a star in the making, especially as he held the record for the quickest final win in the 20th century. When competing in the Davis Cup with Great Britain, he led the team to four straight victories from 1933 to 1936, clearly becoming a fan favourite at such a young age, but also whilst being an ‘amateur’ tennis player. Towards the end of the 1940’s Tibby Wegner, who was a footballer from Austria, approached Fred Perry as had created an item to be worn on the forehead to pick up sweat. Perry took this product and put his own spin on it, making some changes and then the first sweatband had been created. After the success of the sweatband used across the world by tennis players and other sports players alike, they continued their partnership, venturing in to cotton polo shirts which could be used as uniform whilst playing tennis.
The first Fred Perry tennis shirt was revealed and launched at Wimbledon in 1952, with fans and sports players absolutely loving the monumental design. The laurel wreath design of the logo was inspired from old Greek mythology, with the item used in the ancient Olympics and was also the original logo of the famous Wimbledon competition. This logo today is still stitched in to the upper left side of the shirt to this date, with this iconic logo being largely recognised across the planet. The brand was the main face of former British number 1 tennis player Andy Murray up until 2009, and the brand is still seen as one of fashion’s most luxurious fashion houses to this date. The company over the years have ventured in to various fashion markets; attending at a couple of fashion weeks even though its brand mainly isn’t known for being that sort of fashion brand. From selling simple t-shirts to jackets to even shoes, the Fred Perry brand is still right at the top of the fashion industry and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down, especially as the sudden rise of vintage clothing throughout the years. Due to the brand from being around for well over half a century, it is well known for older, pre-used pieces of the brand to be sold online on popular websites such as Depop and eBay to a younger generation of people interested in retro items of clothing. Then again, newer Fred Perry polos are sold within various luxurious department stores around the country to this date, with Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis being a few. Even though the brand is stuck between being partly a vintage sort of clothing yet still a high-class luxury make of clothing, the company still carries on growing, with there still being many stores across the globe where fans of the brand can get the entire Fred Perry experience. With brands like Ralph Lauren and many more surely taking inspiration from the brand, it is sure to say that Fred Perry and his entire brand have made a monumental impact within not only just the fashion industry but the sport industry also.

FROM THE SPACE TO THE SHOPS
We will be celebrating the Air Max Day on the next 26th March and now is a moment to look to the past and see how the emblematic line of Nike has grown since its creation in 1987. It all started in 1960, when an aerospace engineer called Marion Franklin Rudy - now on ‘Frank’ -, decided to leave his old job to try new things. Frank had the intuition that placing small cushions on sneakers will reduce their impact with the ground. He presented his idea to 23 shoe companies, but he didn’t have a good feedback from them; no one believed in his invention. Then, in 1977, the co-founder of Nike, Phil Knight, decided to give Frank a chance and try a shoe prototype with this technology in a run on a the Beaverton campus. When Phil came back after the race, he was conviced of the potential of the air cushion and decided to work on it. During the first years of Air, around 1978, Nike released Tailwind, a running shoe. The marketing team of the company decided to limit the edition to 250 sneakers and send the shoes to six Hawaiian running stores for the Honolulu Marathon. The shoes sold out within 24 hours. That same year, researchers at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville discovered that athletes who used the Nike Tailwind used less energy running in the Air shoes than running in conventional running shoes. Nike validated that Air worked. Nike decided to take a step forward and started selling the shoes not only as running sneakers, developing the Air Max as we know them today. From 1987 and until now, Nike has released more than 20 different lines of the Air Max, including collaborations and redesigns of the Air.

It was designed by the Nike designer team led by Dylan Raasch - Senior Creative Director of Nike Air Max.
McDowell was hired by Nike in 1997 and he was assigned to collaborate with the biggest provider of the moment, Foot Locker.

Carbon brings to you the kawaii brand, Sanrio. Exploring styles and characters through an editorial. See some of your favourite characters bought to life and how the kawaii trend has sparked interest with in anyone’s style!
Sanrio in a nutshell is a Japanese company that designs, licenses and produces products focusing on the kawaii segment of the popular Japanese culture (the culture of cuteness). They create many products such as stationary, lunch boxes, gifts and accessories including the few favourite characters we have used for a beautiful editorial spread to bring these ch ildhood icons to life!
But first: why is th is important? Well, social mediums like TikTok (rise in 2018) have had a surge in ‘kawaii’ content, with BTS and BlackPink also becoming the face of K-Pop, we’re experiencing more ‘kawaii’ culture every day. With Belle Delph ine (4.4M Insta followers & 4,500 Patreon subs in mid-2019, her rise was also 2018), being a massive influencer of a ‘kawaii’ real-life NSFW anime character, she’s famously known for also selling her own bath water, however with th is rise – you can’t beat the original ‘kawaii’ culture bosses at Sanrio! Hello Kitty was added to the early characters of Sanrio in 1974 and was released in 1975. The popular mouthless feline has had both peaks and drops in sales over the years, but always has been the h ighest contributor to Sanrio’s sales. Other notably popular characters through the years have been The Little Twin Stars (created by Mr. Tsuji h imself), My Melody, Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, and many more.

Hello Kitty has long been a cornerstone of the kawaii of Japanese pop culture, created by Yuko Sh imizu, and designed by Yuko Yamaguch i. Kind, friendly and impossibly cute, she offers advice like “Hello Kitty says be yourself!� Although Sanrio had been producing Hello Kitty products since the 1970s, in the mid-1980s Hello Kitty mania swelled and she became one of the most prominent and recognizable Japanese characters on Earth, found on everyth ing from handbags to bath towels.

Little Twin Stars Kiki & Lala are brother and sister; Kiki being the younger brother with blue hair (sometimes brown) and Lala being the older sister with long pink hair (sometimes blonde) – twin stars born on Omoiyari Star, were both introduced in 1975 and thrived in popularity during the early 80’s. In 2014 a collaboration cafe opened in The Guest Cafe & Diner on the seventh floor of Sh ibuya Parco Part 1. The exterior and interior were decorated everywhere with Kiki & Lala. Large figures of Kiki & Lala were set up at the entrance, as well as the café had prepared an original Kiki & Lala collaboration menu!

m o fr I was recently made aware, as I am sure some of you avid fashion magazine readers are too, that Vogue Italia made the bold decision to refrain from carrying out any photoshoots whatsoever in it’s January 2020 issue. This daring decision was made “simply, to be more sustainable� in an effort to significantly reduce their carbon footprint, as stated in a press release by Vogue's publishing company on the 3rd of January. Instead of seeing glamorous models wearing designer outfits in exotic locations, as is synonymous with Vogue publications, readers of the January issue were instead presented with the exquisite illustrations of seven different artists from across the world. Each of the artists were asked to create a cover, which featured a model wearing Gucci clothes. These artists included: David Salle, Vanessa Beecroft, Cassi Namoda, Milo Manara, Delphine Desane, Paolo Ventura, and Yoshitaka Amano. Each of the artists chose to explore a different medium and so each cover celebrates a different style from painting, drawing, graphic design, comic book design and collage. As well as having the benefit of lessening the negative impact that the fashion industry has on the environment, the use of illustrators
to promote fashion gives readers the opportunity to look at designer clothing in a different light; perhaps seeing each item as a work of art in its own right, rather than simply just a garment. Moreover, whilst the use of professional models can help to bring items of clothing to life, especially where the photoshoot is telling a story or has a specific theme, using illustrations instead, allows us as readers to celebrate the clothing as opposed to how the model looks in the clothing. This in turn, can make the styling seem more attainable, as it eliminates the pressure to look a certain way in the garment and therefore, encourages inclusivity. Another benefit of replacing photoshoots with illustrations, is that the images are a visual reminder of the original creative idea and take our appreciation of fashion back to its purest form. All items of clothing, from high street to haute couture, will start out as a sketch, whether this be in digital form or a hand drawn picture. It is at this first stage of the creative process that designers express themselves, ideas are sparked and new items of clothing become a reality and so these drawings should be celebrated and used as

Drag first became an artistic concept in the late 16th century when Shakespearean Theatre needed a solution to portraying females within a play, without disobeying the very influential Church of England, at the time. Day-to-day Drag was later introduced in the 18th century by the iconic Princess Seraphina, born as John Cooper. Being the first Queen recognised country-wide as who they were meant to be. Even though men could be hung for participating in homosexual acts, there were no official reports of Seraphina ever being arrested, rather, her trial in 1732 was concerning a servant stealing clothes and jewellery!
As time evolved, drag became much more about developing your own individuality, which in turn, created fanbases. There was even a time in the 1920s and early 30s, otherwise known as the ‘pansy craze’ where the American public became almost celebratory of Drag Queens and the general LGBT community. This was unfortunately just before a fear developed surrounding the AIDS epidemic, which had a detrimental impact on the way drag was perceived.
Tensions raised in the 1969 Stonewall Riot, when drag queens, specifically the legendary Marsha P Johnson, protested heavily against police raids on gay bars in New York City and in turn lead to the gay Liberation Front. The rather ludicrously long fight for equality continues into the 1970s and 80s with Harvey Milk becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in San Fransisco in 1977.
The positive representation of drag gradually bleeds into mainstream life with the help of RuPaul, creating a bridge of interest between those previously so segregated. The level of equality for all minority communities in 2020 is still poor, but with more visibility and more people in powerful positions recognising and fixing discriminatory acts or laws, we may all live in a world where equality is finally achieved.

This became a sense of family and support to the community, in a time where discrimination was becoming its highest once again. This concept of family developed further as drag mothers are born into the world. This was typically an experienced queen taking in younger queens going through a difficult time who needed to get off of the streets.

Celebrities doing collaborations and releasing their own lines in the fashion industry is nothing new, I’m sure we’ve all had a smell of Fantasy by Britney Spears, and we’ve all worn Beyonce’s gym kit; Ivy Park. It just always works. It works because the artists already have a large and dedicated fan base, it’s not like a small brand coming out trying to get a name for themselves. They’re already established in the music industry, and therefore we look out for their stuff more.
Not only that, but it works because even if we don’t really know who the artist is, it will get so much more public recognition than any other small brand and therefore we can respect the art of fashion and creativity put forward by the artist. Having an eye and respecting their work also, is what helps for their range or collaboration to pay off harder.

The star being heavily draped in jewellery always promotes the sale of her line by allowing fans to be more alike her. Maybe that’s something they’re much more focused on.
As the year develops and we go further into the new decade, we are sure to see many more celebrity lines and collabs. With your favourite stars beginning to find their feet, and create things they are passionate about other than music, you can find yourself falling further and further into them not only as a person, but as an artist too. As we all will, and we will all look forward to seeing who brings out what next.

CHANGING the PERCEPTION OF FASHION Many musicians wish to make their mark in the world within the music industry but also amongst the fashion industry, with the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna leaving an influence upon fashion already for decades. The up-coming generation of musicians have a hard job to fulfil their aspirations to leave a mark in the ever-changing industries.
Billie Eilish, the 18-year-old ‘bad guy’ singer song-writer, is already
known as Gen Z’s outrageous fashion role model. She hasn’t fallen victim to the pressures to conform to the hyper-feminised pop star stereotype, unlike talented performers such as Ariana Grande. Eilish conforms to the 90’s hiphop/skate style with oversized, graffiti prints, to hide her curves and avoid the sexy/girly/feminine stance of fashion, heavily endorsed by female celebrities, as well as rarely wearing makeup - providing a confident, non-caring trait about the fashion statement teen. She is known for her iconic blue/green hairstyles as well as her current black hair with neon green roots, which many fans have tried themselves to replicate with it’s edgy punk/goth references. Miss Eilish has been called a good role model by Fashion Stylist Rachel Gilman, for the fact that a young female musician “can succeed without wearing a push-up bra if that isn’t their vibe” proving Billie is noticed predominantly for her music, rather than ‘sex appeal’ to an audience. Due to her apparent realness in the industry she has attracted many fashion marketers such as Calvin Klein, who she did the campaign “I speak my truth in #MYCALVINS, which has been one of the only celebrity endorsed advertisements for the brand which hasn’t been in their underwear, following the likes of Shawn Mendes and the Kardashian sisters. 132

Jaden Smith is another musician making a huge impact upon modern
fashion as we know it today, known famously for being Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s oldest child, he has made his own impact aside from his famous family. The 21-year-old has his own philosophy, perspective and visions for the fashion industry, his first debut collaboration was with G-Star RAW as a celebrity endorser, he chose the brand due to their environmentally friendly approach towards their manufacturing of clothing - something many young people wouldn’t think about within a brand, showing his personal values on important issues caused by fashion production. In 2016, He and his sister Willow were awarded the New Fashion Icons Award in the Uk, which helped mark his position and influence on the industry. His style is unique and classy, and Jaden wears whatever he wants, he doesn’t conform to specific trends or outfits. He’s known for his shaved, bleach hair style, baggy/mixed brands styled outfits, heavily patched/graffiti printed clothes, all followed by his strong confident stance in the items, allows us to see why Jaden Smith has made such a strong mark already on the industry. Many more artists will attempt to make an influence within the industry, it will be interesting in the years ahead, to see those who have managed to create trends and which ones will end up lasting into the next decade.

The way we consume and listen to music now is a lot different to what is was like back in the 2000s, but what are the biggest changes between the music then compared to now?

changing music industry. Now choose listen to It’s been 20 years and the music industry has changed and evolved drastically. Hip Hop / Rap and RnB has become immensely popular, with the music completely flooding the charts. Artists like Drake, Travis Scott and Roddy Rich have created a new wave of music that is completely dominating the charts. Also, other music, like Dance and Alternative, have paved their own way in to the charts. In addition to this, artist like Lewis Capaldi and Regard are also making extremely popular music. Comparing music now to the 2000s is extremely different. The official charts were extremely pop heavy, with boybands like Westlife and girl groups like Destiny’s Child popping up frequently in the charts. Single artists appeared quite frequently too, with Madonna, Britney Spears and Robbie Williams (to name a few) frequently popping up in the charts. The only similar comparison with the two different years was that Eminem, a hip-hop artist, was in the charts then and still is now. A huge change from the 2000s to now is that it is easier to listen to music. Streaming and YouTube allows all types of music to be more available to everyone. If a song is trending, anyone can listen to it at any given point, making it much easier for a song to gain popularity and trend. This is a lot different compared to music in the 2000s. With listening to music then, the radio was more frequently used as a mean to listen to music. The problem with this however was that people couldn’t choose what to listen to, meaning it was harder for music to chart. Also, people had to purchase their music as opposed to streaming it, and therefore people may not be inclined to listen to different types of music as they would have to buy it. Now, music can chart much easier because of streaming services, with The Offical Charts Company stating that “supporting paid streaming over free streaming will benefit the music industry. Under the current system, it takes 150 streams of a song to count as the equivalent of a traditional, old-school sale”. As many more people stream music, this contributes to the popularity of a song, making the song more likely to chart”. Also, with the introduction of social media and the internet, it is a lot easier for music to become more popular now. People have the ability to share their favourite artists and music so much easier. This again allows the music to become more popular at a quicker speed – a major difference to the 2000s. Sharing music in the 2000s would have been a lot slower and not as quick. The longest running number 1 in 2019 was “Old Town Road”by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus. This is different compared to the longest running number 1 of the 2000s, which was ‘Breathe’ By Faith Hill. Overall the connection that is made in the 20-year difference is that every artist is more than just an artist; they are a brand and a face that people come together to follow. That is what will never change.

Being the first year of a new decade, it starts to set the tone for what the 2020s will be remembered as in the history books. Music is hugely influential and it becomes even more important as the years go on. The musicians who take the lead for this decade will be known for years to come and may shape what our generation will be remembered by. Not knowing which genre may take the lead in defining these next 10 years, here are some people to watch out for that could be a part of this journey.
1. LUCIA AND THE BAD BOYS
If the 80s designed a band to continue it’s legacy of music into the 21st century, Lucia & The Best Boys would be the outcome. Originating from Glasgow the 4 piece act have a sound that is reminiscent of the 80’s, but it’s continued to be loved by people of all generations. Although, they are not the only artists trying to capture this sort of era and bring it back to life, they are one of the few bands who have been able to make it sound like they are really from that time and are here to show that genre has no age. Having recently reinvented their image and changing the name of their group, has lead to big things that could make them artists to really keep up with and enjoy over the next few years.
2. SAINT PHNX
Originating from Glasgow as a duo act made up of two brothers, Stevie and Alan Jukes, their music has caught the attention of Imagine Dragons and they were asked to be a support act for the band. Their music attracts the same sort of fans as the leading act they opened for, which really gives the duo a leg up into being one step closer to a career that is the equivalent. A recent song combines Imagine Dragon’s tendency to have strong beats with a style that we might be more used to hearing from Twenty-One Pilots. The duo definitely produces music that a lot of people would listen to and it would be no surprise to see their name on the charts within the next year or so.
3. ALLIE X
If you’re looking for an intense, empowering, edgier version of Melanie Martinez combined with Taylor Swift’s talent for break up songs, Allie X is the girl to be listening to. Her music style is indie pop and really shows her personality and life experiences through her lyrics. With her music being that of a fairly popular genre, her rising fame makes sense and with more of her songs being successful and getting a lot of listeners, she’s almost set up to be one of the stars of the 2020s. An artist I can see her being in similar leagues to is Billy Eilish and their music styles, though different, could definitely work alongside each other.
4. 7TH OBI
A Soundcloud rapper with potential isn’t hard to come by, but 7th Obi has been notable for a while with his music taking inspiration from big names like Kanye West and Travis Scott who have both found huge success in the rap game. Often it takes featuring on a song with someone who has already earned a name for themselves as a way into gaining attention from bigger audiences. This hasn’t happened quite yet but he is beginning to make more connections and collab with other artist such as RikShaw. New releases of his music are showing his following is growing and with rap being maybe one of the most listened to genres at the moment, his music is in the running to help form the decade’s identity.
5. DECLAN MCKENNA
His name is already known within the industry and with him due to be releasing a new album ‘Zeros’ to kick off the year, this could be his chance to really cement his name and gain a higher position in the charts with his music. He has seen success since his debut in 2015 but with age his music has improved, he’s climbing towards his peak and the 2020s could really be his opportunity to achieve that. His music ranges between alternative to indie rock, with his most recent single ‘Beautiful Faces’ giving a taste of what is album is going to sound like. It shows a real difference and growth from his previous album ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’ that he released in 2017.
6. HOLLY HUMBERSTONE
Having performed at Glastonbury 2019, Holly Humberstone has only recently released her first single ‘Deep End’, which will be available on music streaming platforms from the 31st January 2020. Her music is soft and melodic with light use of instrumental and a slow pace. To place her in a genre would be closest to Indie with an emotional tone to her music that shows a true personal connection she has with her music. Although it contrasts a lot of what we see in the charts, which tend to tick with empowering and catchy, Humberstone’s music could be that artist who stands out in comparison to other musicians we hear.
7. DEVON
Devon has been releasing songs since 2017, though he’s not released more than a couple songs per year this could definitely change with his increasing listeners. His pop punk style has an upbeat quality to it and his most recent music has a similar sound to “She’s So Lovely” by Scouting For Girls. With promotion from Spotify, which has recognised his songs and placed them in the public playlists that it creates. In terms of music success the more songs he’s released, the more attention they’ve gained and listeners have increased; showing that he’s on the path to being one of the defining artists of 2020. His newest release “I DONT WANT 2 B UR FRIEND” has proved to be his best song to date with more than 300,000 plays on Spotify and is definitely worth a listen.

Her name is Rosalía and she is a Spanish artist who has become a huge icon around the world. But what is it that she has to have conquered the world? Almost as many criticisms as compliments have been created around her figure; either way she has managed to keep everyone engaged and talking about her.

She is considered to be one of the greatest musical revelations of all time, while for others it is the result of a perfectly studied marketing strategy. This is what we come to reveal, Rosalia’s perfect marketing strategy.

Wether you like her or not, there is no doubt that she is different to other artists. The product that she offers is unique, urban music blended with flamenco. We had never seen something similar before, she has been able to create a new genre of music which we are not able to place into one category, launching a feeling of uniqueness in her music and style. She has also managed to become iconic, to create her own brand through words, gestures and images. She uses typical Spanish words and expressions that are known to the Spanish public and new and unique internationally, creating a very personal link with her fans. The imagery she uses in her videos and conc erts are immensely powerful. Bulls, Christian symbology that we see in Spain and the red colour, very linked to the flamenco industry are seen everywhere. In addition to all this imagery, she is very well known for her gestures, such as moving her hair like a flamenco dancer or her hand movements with palms and bull gestures, as well as her extravagant nails. Through all of this, she achieves an amazing brand communication, which is usually very difficult to accomplish when creating a brand.

A huge example of this is Travis Scott, who on his new version of ‘Highest In The Room’ with Rosalia, most of the comments on instagram and youtube are Spanish, which introduces him into the Spanish market and at the same time rises Rosalia a step up opening more as an international artist.

Unlike the majority of artists, our Spanish singer has managed to diverse from the famous “polemic marketing” her marketing is clever, a viral marketing technique that is focused on maximising the word of mouth potential of herself. All of her content has a story to tell, her most famous disk, is inspired by a book from the XIV century, and she made sure everyone was talking about it. Her videoclips are full of hidden symbology for people to talk about, this is free publicity to her. Her content is so powerful and symbolic, that even her live shows are broadcaster in the news of foreign countries. Even powerful artists such as Billie Eilish feel the need to talk about her, “Rosalia! God I love Rosalia. Oh my God! You know what I have to say about her? At Coachella, I watched her show. I remember watching it and being like: there is no point for me to do my show tomorrow, I can’t beat this, nobody is ever going to beat this show.” She is creating pure marketing without people being conscious about it.

Rosalia is not only a diva, but she acts like one. She is giving the imagery of a powerful woman, a nice diva, one that we actually like. In order to look like a real diva, Rosalia not being an international artist yet in 2018, announced her new album “El Mal Querer� in Times Square, New York and performed her first big show with Red Bull. At this time she was only known in Spain by a few, but debuting in such a way, gave everyone an idea of an international artist, of a diva, a higher status than the one she actually had at that time. In order to enhance this position she always writes her name in capitals. She is also constantly sharing posts in which other celebs and influencers mention her, making her seem more approachable and known, she is a diva but seems nice and affable. 144

Last but not least, Rosalia’s aesthetic has a lot to talk about, she has launched the flamenco aesthetic into the fashion world, she has become an icon with her very own style, mixing Flamenco and Ratchet. Her high pony tales, frills and ruffles in her outfits, portraying the flamenco vibe, mixed with extravagant, long nails and redesigned clothes conveying the ratchet outfits, as well as heavy big gold jewellery, focusing on big earrings which can be related to both styles. Her style is so iconic that several brands such as Pull & bear, Louis Vuitton and apple have collared with her. Her style is commented internationally and has been copied by several artists such as Karol G. She is a fashion icon in the music industry. After revealing all of Rosalia’s key moves to become the well known artist that she is now, through the best marketing you will ever witness; we would like you to think about this points, to challenge yourself to try to tell apart what is pure marketing within the music industry and what is unintentional coincidence. We should value more everything that goes behind a beautiful face and a nice song, and how this brilliant artist has managed to captivate us through this very clever and subtle marketing strategy.

Pearl
Inspiration from 90’s style hair clips, last year’s pearl hair clip trend came to life. They immediately dress up any look and can still be styled in endless ways – the trend still lives on into 2020! This time, pearls have been incorporated into braids (pearls were already introduced onto eyelids/lips/eyebrows for makeup looks, etc), giving an even more glamorous and delicate vibe to the classic clips.
Pictured, Sarah Silver for the Zoe Report Pearls are known for being a symbol of elegance and rarity. Spiritually they’re symbolic of wisdom gained through experience, offer protection and attract luck and wealth – so we want to keep these on us as much as we can!
Most pearls today are cultured. Natural pearls are in the wild without any human assistance (like growing inside mussels/oysters) and cultured pearls are grown under tightly controlled conditions (farmers plant a core made up of the mussels/oysters and keep designing them as they grow to create the ‘perfect pearl’) – however knowing the differences for your opulent purchase begins with their shape. Natural pearls are not all uniform like cultural pearls as they’re wild and grow however they want along with that iridescent quality! However, this isn’t to say that cultured pearls are bad! If anything, they have amazing positives like how the process is still natural, just monitored, as well as the cost being drastically lower than natural pearls, safer than diving for pearls which can cause hypothermia, drowning, general environmental risks and deep-water blackout. Additionally there’s more pearl jewellery styles to be had which cultured pearls with an array of colours!

Kokichi Mikimoto created the first cultured pearl in 1896 – the Japanese entrepreneur’s discovery (after two decades of trial-and-error) helped fulfil the global demand for pearls in a more sustainable way. Mikimoto’s dream was to “adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls”.
Pearls have so much history – the world’s most expensive is valued at $100 million! It was kept under a bed as a good luck charm before it was found within a house that burnt down – at 26 inches long and weighing nearly 75 pounds; it’s the largest pearl known to exist. As we enter the wonder that is a whole new decade we can reflect on the brilliant things that 2019 gave us, and also pay attention to the things that are still around from last year. That said, every year we look forward to what the Victoria and Albert museum will offer for us next.
Still showcasing itself from September 2019 although, is Tim Walker: Wonderful Things. An immersive artistic exploration of fashion photography and beautiful art. The exhibition allows you to feel a part of Walker’s magical world, and understand his work the way in which he envisioned it. Not wanting to spoil it for you although, the exhibition displays his work just like a fairytale. It’s not only pleasant for the eye, but it’s food for the imagination. The Victoria and Albert museum have a reputation of presenting their visitors with fascinating exhibitions that give themselves a different, artistic approach to the work of the fashion and culturalist arts. Presenting collections and work in this way means for the museum to stand out from others, which the Tim Walker exhibition most definitely does. Furthermore, the exhibition explores the senses throughout unusual and artistic fashion photography. Alowing the visitor to experience a well round immersive visual and emotive journey. The exhibition as always is compelling through story telling, making you feel like a character withi Walker’s own photography. The fantisful and magical feel of the

exhibition is really reinforced throughout the exhibition, making sure you really feel a part of the action. But not to wory, the dream isn’t really over yet. The V&A museum really do have a lot up their sleve for 2020. Even their big flowly sleeves when they show us the magic of the timeless Kimono. Exploring the past, present, east and west; we will learn exactly what makes the Kimono so great. Not only that, but we will be able to really appreiate the best acsesory of all time - Bags! (A bit vague, but surely thats the best part, right?)
Within this new year, and the many more years to come; make sure you take a visit to the Victoria and Albert museum. The exhibitions are unlike any other, and will really show you the magic and connectivitiy art brings us. But if none of those really tickled your fancy, be sure to hang in there, there will be much more to come.

Welcome To Jodie Wilkins has helped Carbon to give an insight into studying in the big apple - living in Manhattan and studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology (through University of Bournemouth), for 6 months! Hear how she’s experienced New York within her first few weeks, asking her questions that we all would be dying to know from someone having such a great opportunity to kickstart her career in Photography - as well as hopefully inspiring some of us to capture opportunities like this for ourselves!
1. How have you been able to afford this opportunity? The costs of this opportunity have been heavily funded by the support of my University as participation from my own savings and help from my family members. This has always been a pipe dream of mine since I was around 14/15 and first heard about the exciting lives and stories told from New York City. As the government have funded my tuition fees for my studies at Arts University Bournemouth, I owe no tuition fees to Fashion Institute of Technology as part of my exchange semester. 2. How different is their Univiersity compared to the UK’S?

Everything is completely different. Backwards almost for me, I have never been taught like this, I have never interacted with people like this nor made friends like this. I would describe it very similar to UK schools, where you attend your classes everyday and are taught something new every single week. There is homework set from individual classes and are expected to complete this every week. The personalities here are high, from being here for only a week and a half, Americans are high energy and happy to assist in any way. They are very generous and eager to understand more about you as an individual. Even the layout of the University, it is set across three streets, from 26th to 28th which even includes two on campus halls of residence.

3. How have you been making new friends/talking to new people? Is it similar to beginning Uni in the UK? I consider myself fairly confident, in the line of work I am going in, I know I have to be confident. Yet somehow friend making started off somewhat isolating. It was so difficult to go into a whole new place, where you don’t know the navigation yet and try and make friends. It wasn’t similar at all for when you first start making friends when you go into your first year at University in England. As I was walking in as a sophomore, these friendship groups had already been made, their work was known and stability had been made. It was hard to break down these barriers of judgement and fear, yet as the days went on, I stuck to being myself and allowing others to hear me as I spoke about my work and opinions, I was starting to be taken notice of. So far, I have met four wonderful people, and hope these friendships can expand. 4. How has your mental health been while away from friends and family?

There are some days I feel isolation, my place of residence can make me feel this way sometimes. I’m not sure if you’re aware of the film “Girl, interrupted” but every time I enter the diner hall for breakfast or dinner, it feels like a rehabilitation centre. The decor is that classic American silver and green dental/hospital look, and there are “security” in white outfits that overlook the diner hall and reception. Some days it makes me laugh, some days it feels real. 5. What do you plan to do in NYC (apart from the work)? There are so many places I must visit. I made a list in fact, as this is now my second time being here, I have hit all the touristy spots and can focus on the places that may not get as much attention. I want to visit Coney Island first. The nostalgia from Coney Island is an experience I need to have, there are movie scenes that are set there and it looks so magical, especially in summer. The amount of photo book on the island too, it’s pure euphoria. I will be visiting The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Staten Island. I would also like to give my attention to the galleries and museums here in the city, not just places like the moma or guggenheim, I would like to visit smaller more local art labs and pay gratitude. I just plan to explore this city and everything it can/ could offer me in this short time space I have here. 6. Has New York lived to the expectations or is it not so glamorous as it seems? New York is really how you make it and live it, but it’s definitely not glamorous. It is the combinations of southern beauty and city grit mixed together, it’s a beautifully dirty city. There are definitely places here that are more residential and quiet in the City, but wherever you live has its ups and downs from the city life. You’re getting the best and also the worst. Personally, I think this is a perfect representation of how raw cities run, living here yourself you will understand the complexities of what New York offers you. 7. Would you recommend students to try study/travel abroad like you have if the opportunity arose? YES. yes. yes. If any university you know offers an exchange programme or study abroad, I will deeply encourage you to take it. Or if the university does not offer one, make it a crucial want for your place of study to start offering and getting involved. Especially for young creatives, this industry is hard enough, and we don’t just want to get

Meaning the ‘I Love You Wall’ or better known as ‘The Wall of Love’, this wall was created by artists as a lasting monument to ‘eternal adoration’. Tired of your flight being ruined by your own anxieties? You are not alone. Over 40 percent of people have said that they have had some degree of flight related anxiety. 6.5% of the passengers have a diagnosable phobia of flying. Flying can be an extremely stressful way of travel, from the fear of confined spaces, heights and being surrounded by strangers. Lots of people have come up with their own ways of facing their anxieties head on but more often than usual these self-prescribed antidotes might be doing more harm than good. Nothing should stand between you and your dream destination, even your own head. Naming your phobia is one very important step in conquering flight anxiety, there are many different aspects of flying that can trigger people differently based on the fears of that individual. For example, an individual with germaphobia may be afraid of the spread of germs in the cabin during the flight and another may fear the turbulence during the flight. More than 90% of individuals that suffer with flight anxiety is the fear that they will become panicked during the flight. That is why it is essential to pinpoint the cause of anxiety before you can take the step to your destination. Turbulence. It happens. It is a normal part of flying and is to be expected. However, the idea of the plane shaking whilst in the air at thousands of feet can be very daunting and upsetting. An app, Turbcast was designed by a pilot and it analyses weather patterns. This app can give fliers a piece of mind as they can get an inside look at factors like thunderstorms and air pockets that can cause turbulence. The more you educate yourself on the causes of the aircraft shaking during the flight and how much turbulence to
Keep your eyes on the prize. Bring a photo of your destination with you, whether it’s a picture of the hotel you are staying at, the island itself or the beach. This can be a powerful antidote to stress. Looking at the picture can keep your mind wandering into anxiety. Some aircrafts provide some home comforts such as music, magazines and televisions. These distract fliers from noises and bumps during the flight and make you feel more at home whilst being 30,000 feet in the sky. It is known that one of the best distractions, is the bring a book with you for the flight, something that you have already started so that you can become easily engrossed in it. Passports away! Here are the Best places to see in UK The country has very diverse scenery and rich cultural heritage and that’s why having holidays in England appeals to people more now than ever before. The best places to visit include, preserved estates and castles, art galleries and museums.
1. Edinburgh Scotland’s most attractive city, very popular for its preserved historic buildings, including the majestic Edinburgh castle. Other important historic sites include, the Old town’s Royal mile with architecture, cafés, boutiques and restaurants. Edinburgh isn’t just known for their historic preservations but it is also popular because of the famous Princess street, which has shopping and dining.
2. Snowdonia A national park, with a stunning 360-degree view of the mountains and coasts below. When the sky is clear visitors are able to see Ireland. Snowdonia is located on the coast of Wales. Snowdonia is home to Snowdon, the tallest mountain in England. It is the third largest national park in the whole of the United Kingdom.
3. Cambridge Cambridge is an English city located o the river cam which is north of London. Home to one of the worlds top universities, the university of Cambridge. When Traveling to the capital of Hungary it is important to have some sort of idea in what you want to do. So, here in this article, I’m going to tell you the best things that I did in Budapest. However, if you are not planning on traveling to Budapest, hopefully my ‘amazing’ description of what I did influences you enough to think about going.
Sights and Travel:
Well, being a teen/young adult, you probably just want to know about the nightlife, BUT trust me, the sights are defiantly worth seeing, even if you are half asleep and hungover. For starters, just start walking about; the architecture is really interesting (obviously very European). The streets are very reminiscent of New York, which I found really cool when walking through (probably something to do with the fact that New York was built by Europeans). My favourite sight of the trip was the Liberty statue. Just outside the centre of Buda there is a Liberty monument on the top of this giant hill. The walk up is very tiring, but at the top you get to see the whole of the City, and the view is absolutely fantastic. Connected to this hill is the Budapest’s Parliament, which is also another great view, which I would definitely recommend you looking at. With regards to travel, it is possible to walk to most places you want to go. However, it is bloody freezing, so my mates and I opted to get a travel card. For the price of 1800 Hungarian Forint, you can get a 24 hr Travelcard (roughly £4.50). With this you can use all the trams, buses and the metro. The metro and trams around Buda were so impressive, everything was on time, clean and extremely quick. It was so enjoyable to get in with the locals and travel this way. It was also a lot warmer and quicker too.

Right, the important part. Clubbing. For sure the best Club we went to was Instant. We went out for three nights and every night we ended back out there. With what it seems like hundreds upon hundreds of rooms, Instant felt like it had everything that you needed in a club. All different sorts of music All different sorts of drinks. All different sorts of vibes and atmospheres. If you go out in Budapest, you HAVE to go here. When going to bars there are a whole lot of different bars to go and see. Another really cool bar was Bolt, which had extremely cheap drinks, but that place was more of an in and out sort of place.
Fun Fact: Budapest was originally two cities; Buda and Pest. They merged together in 1873, with the inclusion of another city, Obuda.

This Medieval style restaurant is extremely impressive, the entire restaurant is designed to make you feel like you are back in the medieval times. There is also entertainment going on as you eat; you have fire eaters, sword balancers and belly dancers all there as you are eating. Sir Lancelot’s is an experience you will not forget if you go to Budapest. Another unforgettable place to go to is the Zoo Café. In the Zoo Café, you sit down and order different drinks whilst the workers come over and leave different animals on your table. You get to handle all of the animals, ranging from Rabbits to Snakes and Chameleons. This was an experience I will never forget; the animals were all so friendly and happy. The Café is placed in a Zoo itself, with fish tanks and animals all in containers all on the walls.

Flights to Thailand might not seem like your cheapest holiday option but as soon as you arrive, the extra transport costs are offset by the cheap party culture that awaits. Beer is cheaper than water in the Czech capital, so its little wonder this legendary party city is jam packed with EDM clubs, cosy dive bars and live music venues. Dlouhá, a street in the Old Town, is known as the main nightlife hub, and is home to legendary club Roxy. Taking over an Art Deco, former cinema, the club incorporates the visual arts into a full sensory experience, with a gallery and theatre on its second storey. But it’s the cavernous dance floor that’ll tempt you, where you’re just as likely to witness a world-class concert as you are to dance the night away to some of Europe’s most euphoric beats – look out for artists like Mall Grab and Ofenbach. kavos
Kavos has been Corfu’s party capital since the Eighties, and it’s still a 24/7 party town packed full of bars and clubs. Revellers head to the main strip to dance the night away, and then gather for sunrise on the beach after a whole night of partying. Buzz and Future Club are the places you can’t miss on a Kavos night out. Future attracts big name DJs throughout the season, and Ministry often take over on special club nights for some huge raves.
Croatia
Widely known for its laidback vibes, Croatia is an unexpected – but an unreal - destination for a party holiday in Europe. With its gorgeous Adriatic coastline and cluster of party islands to the west, you’d be forgiven for thinking Ibiza had taken up a residency in Eastern Europe. Those seeking laidback drinks on their Croatia party holiday should make their way to the mainland. Dubrovnik’s chilled Banje Beach offers high-end cocktails, which are perfect for sipping with a view of the Adriatic Sea. If you’re in the north-west of Croatia, head to Gallery in Zagreb, where aerial performers tumble from the ceiling in time with House music.

Let your fiesta on at Mexico’s nightlife capital, sunbathe all day and then party through the night in Latin America’s biggest clubs – While you can rub shoulders with a more local crowd downtown on La Ruta Nader, you can’t visit Cancun without experiencing at least one of its Hotel Zone superclubs. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany’s capital has become a center for cutting-edge art and progressive nightlife. All-night partiers love the fact that there’s no law around closing times for bars, and the range of nightlife spots range from techno raves to swing dancing. In line with its cool, trendy scene, many clubs are housed underground and in industrial warehouses that arrive and disappear before they become too well-known.
