Over the last couple issues of Carbon the brand has really started to take hape with a clear identity as a magazine for young creatives, created by young creatives. Becoming editor of Carbon for this issue has been a challenge, but a challenge that has helped me grow in confidence as well as in skill. As editor of this issue, with the help of my amazing team, I have picked some great content for you to be inspired by. Each issue gets closer and closer to our goal of being the ultimate brand for edgy art, fashion and music. We intend to keep growing as a team and as a publication until it’s perfect. As always, in this issue, we have had the pleasure of working alongside others in the Solent community, giving them a chance to showcase their amazing talents. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ellisha Jade White, an amazing business woman and also a graduate of Solent. We also have an interview with a final year design student, showing the real dedication and talent of creative students here at Solent. The team and I really hope you enjoy reading, as much as we’ve enjoyed creating. We also thank you for joining us on our journey, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future of Carbon on Campus!

and even eat, the people of Flint, Michigan are being poisioned by their water supply that contains lead. Designer Tracey Reese teams up with conceptual artist Mel Chin to create dresses recycled from over 90,000 empty bottles that the residents of Flint collected. Since 2014, Flint have spent $22,000 on bottled water, so Reese and Chin teamed up to create environmental awareness and an agent of change. “For me, the design process always starts with textiles,” Reese said in a press release. “So designing into options that Unifi was able to create from the Flint water bottles was central to the concept.”

Stella McCartney buys back Stella McCartney. Stella McCartney is buying back 50% of her company that was previously owned by Kering, a global brand that also owns Gucci. Not only is this great news for the fashion industry, but McCartney is a designer in an industry where 60% of creative directors are male.

Launching 8th November in selected H&M stores and online. “This collaboration akes me feel like I’m able to give something again. GABRIELLE BASSETT Gabrielle Bassett desribes herself as a ‘fashion enthusiast and beret wearer’. She is a fashion blogger and like many of them, has the hots for the newest trends and most out there styles. Her look ranges from a simple double denim attire with a statement bag to an off the cuff, bright pop of colour teamed with animal print and a chic pair of sunglasses. Berets are a challenge to style, some people just don’t have the courage to pull this look off, or even purchase one in a store. Bassett’s keen eye on making a fashion statement means she is daring enough to rock a classic accessory, and she does it well.

DECADES OF

DENIM Patented back in 1873, the blue jeans evolution began. Originally worn by men, the durable trouser instantly became a hit. The careful placed rivets made the fashion pieces more practical and lasting. Behind the creation of jeans were Jacob Davis and worldwide figure, Levi Strauss. Businessman Strauss was approached by Davis - the man to thank for the addition of rivets to overalls. The pair began their revolutionary journey as Davis couldn’t afford to patent his rivet design, Strauss however, could. Setting apart the now branded ‘Levi’s’ from the traditionally made jean pant - known as overalls, was the duos choice to use denim instead. This increased the comfort and durability of the pant which lead overalls to become the leading product in mens work wear in the 1920s. Classically starting our jean timeline is the turned up ankle male trend of the 50s. The bold block look was donned by all men, most famously by “the King” Elvis Presley. Through into

22 carbon | fashion

the 30s, the wear of jeans rose in popularity after Westerns and cowboys adopted the image; this spurred on the wanting of all boys and men to echo the look. It wasn’t until the 60s that women started wearing jeans, the time at which the reinvention of the casual look was formed. The statement 60s and 70s saw jeans to become a symbol of non-conformity. Bell-bottomed jeans were introduced and embellishment became a form of sharing your voice through fashion. Embroidery, beads and paint were most commonly used alongside the historical events of the Vietnam war, civil rights protests, the assassination of John F Kennedy and Martin Luther King, as well as finally man landing on the moon. Moving onto the 80s, the era of rock, raw style to over the jean scene. Acid wash, rips, holes, cuts and high waist lines shaped the decades edge. Combine the perms and oversized plastic jewellery with the rough on the edge denim and you were “totally radical!”. Climbing the social ladder during the 90s was grunge fashion. Mom jeans became the trend to follow as popular celebrities and T V shows - such as Friends, won over the world. Consisting of trend such as: flannel shirts, Doc Martins, band t-shirts and ripped tights, the 90s also saw a notable shift in body branding - tattoos, ear piercings etc. In the late 90s the anti-conformist approach led fashion to the popularisation of the casual chic look: t-shirts, jeans and sneakers, a trend which continued into the naughties. When you think of the 2000s denim, you click to low rise jeans and the iconic look of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake - the American music awards denim overload that turned all heads. But now, present day, we are beginning to fully embrace the recycling of trends. Although its been happening throughout the decades, fashion has turned a full circle. With trends picking points form all eras, denim has become an all round look. Cuts waistlines varying abundantly, the freedom in our modern world’s attitude allows for far more expression denim has ever seen. Question is… Where will it take us next?

A DAY IN LIFE OF A FASHION DESIGNER

ALEXANDRA TERRIS 36

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN FMP

We spoke to Alexandra Terris on what life as a fashion designer is really like putting together the first big collection of her career. Alexandra Terris is a third year student at Southampton Solent University, currently working on her final major project(FMP) for her fashion design BA hons course. Since starting university in 2015, Alexandra’s love for fashion design has grown and she is now creating designs to hopefully be showcased in the Solent graduate Fashion Show to kick-start her professional career. At Carbon we want to inspire, aspiring students or amateurs in the fashion industry in how to achieve at university and what can be accomplished by the time they reach graduation- hopefully fully prepared to enter the fashion world. We take a look at the hard work and dedication it takes to pull off an FMP shows you University is no easy option. Prior to starting the course, Alexandra had a fashion BTEC under her belt and so has always liked to do “textural stuff and things that have a lot of detail in it”. The course at Solent, in her opinion, gave such a big overview of what you can learn; you can do print design, pattern cutting, pretty much do everything to do with fashion design. University is a popular choice prior to gaining industry expertise in preparation for landing a dream job role. How was your university experience? “Yeah it’s been great, busy and a lot of work, Its gone so quickly!”. The last year of university is where students wave goodbye to their social life and start their FMP, an opportunity to impress future employers in whatever they decide shows them off the most. FMP is seen as an opportunity to have a practice run before leaving the world of education and entering the world of earning for a living. What was your brief for your FMP? “You don’t particularly get a brief, We have to think up a concept. So my concept was fake beauty and being really out there in your appearance but underneath there being loads of different layers. You can pick your own concept you just have to follow the lines of the overall brief; like having a research book and prints. So, its quite open which is really nice.”. Did a lot of planning go into your collection? “Yes a lot!” What sort of research did you do for it? “I spent my whole summer just taking pictures of things that inspire me and I just looked at all the pictures and thought well these make a little story and thought about how I could work with them. So i just looked at more print designs from other fashion designers and i got a lot of pictures from make up and the colours in make up. That inspired me quite a lot.” Follow Alexander terris @alexandraterris, contact - alexandraterris@gmail.com, https://www.solent.ac.uk

For university students the hardest thing is to gain a following and make yourself known to wider society outside of the university student sphere. By student fashion designers giving their collections a name, they may get noticed by the outside world at events and shows. Alexandra is yet to decide on a name for her collection, something along the lines of “The perspective of beauty” but she says this is still under working progress. Not everyone’s work gets showcased at the Solent Graduate Fashion Show. How many people get to have their designs walk down that catwalk? “We get 4 students on the runways, a few people on the stands and their garments will go up on the mannequins. I think most people’s portfolios will be out”. The main thing that puts aspiring student off of taking a fashion design course is the horror stories that have been circulated about the amount that is expected to be spent on collections and materials. Alexander gives this advice.

“Save a lot of money!” Is their any other advice that you’d give to first year aspiring students wanting to a fashion design course? “Put your absolute all into it, it’s gonna be the only time your’re allowed to be this creative and just have fun with it. Don’t take it too seriously.” What university students pay £9,000 a year for is to become an expert to walk into a job role that someone who hadn’t gone to university has to train for. Buying time before entering a jobperfecting portfolios and skills. Was it worth it? “Yes, I’ve learnt a lot. How to talk to people, present my work, and important skills you need to know when working in industry like working on the computers and doing CAD design, using illustrator, photoshop, pattern cutting as well because pattern cutting is a big thing as I know it’s a great skill even if I don’t become a pattern cutter you can still learn the makeup of a garment, so when you’re actually designing you can see if its going to work or not.” What sort of job do you want to go into when you leave? “I think just designing, maybe print design or fashion design i’m not sure yet but i’d rather work in a smaller company where id have more say.” In 5 years, “Hopefully I’ll be in a company and have been there for a few years. I haven’t really got any dream companies that I am set on working for- maybe having my own business or working in a company but at the same time building up my own company and appearances. So, I like Missguided, Prettylittlething but to be honest I’ll take whatever!”

SOlent’S SINGLETON ellisha jade white If you watched Love Island 2017, then chances are you recognise Ellisha Jade White. The Solent graduate fleetingly appeared on the IT V dating show, lodging down with the boys in Casa Amor for some fun and frolicks. After not pairing up with one of the boys and subsequently not finding love, she was evicted from the villa along with two other singletons. Ellisha Jade was not disheartened when asked about her experience on Love Island saying: “I did enjoy it and I’m happy to say I did it, but it wasn’t the easiest that’s for sure.”. Love Island may not be all its hyped up to be for the contestants, with the ‘bombshells’ (the men and women that enter the villa separately throughout the show) being kept in the dark about what they’re to do until last minute. “No one knows if they’re going to be chosen for the starting line up or the ‘bombshells’ so it’s difficult to gauge the whole way through,” Ellisha Jade explained to Carbon. The line-up isn’t exactly just ‘singles looking for love’ either. Most are scouted for the show, without having applied themselves. The Southampton beauty was scouted for not just that year, but the previous year also, thanks to her successful blog, TheSouthamptonGirl. “I never actually applied, they scouted me on Instagram and Facebook in 2016 and asked me to be on the show. I was sceptical and, in the end, said I didn’t want to go.” Whilst also adding that reality T V isn’t all glitz and glam and that there’s a lot of uncertainty and waiting around, but if she had to appear on another reality T V show it would be Made in Chelsea. After just a few days, Ellisha Jade, self-proclaimed workaholic, was back to her everyday life. The 22-year-old is a very successful woman, owning a PR company, Mirror Digital Media, and the aforementioned successful fashion, beauty business and lifestyle blog, TheSouthamptonGirl.

Having studied Fashion Photography at Solent in her first year, then taking a year out of University to work for in house brands doing photography, she moved onto different agencies doing social media and decided that was where her passion lay. She returned to Solent and studied Fashion PR & Communication for her second and third years. “I really did enjoy it, but it showed me that what you put into university is exactly what you get out of it”. Once she’d graduated, she took her employability into her own hands “I saw all of the big agencies in London and ones that I interned in and thought it was a great idea but couldn’t find anywhere in Southampton that did the same thing, so I just decided to set up my own!

Tailoring it to smaller businesses to help local growth instead of the big corporate companies that I didn’t really want to work with. Same quality, same service just a different concept. Focusing more on local rather than global.” It’s all about seeing where there’s a gap in the market when it comes to Ellisha Jade and her work, having started her blog for the same reason. “I came up with the concept for my agency (Mirror Digital Media) which helps Southampton based businesses but is now branching out too, asI saw a window of opportunity in a growing city and I thought it would be great for more people to hear about what’s here and

41 carbonmag.online

what goes on! I just wanted more people to love living here like I do.” TheSouthamptonGirl is a popular blog run by Ellisha Jade herself and is an essential for people everywhere. From fashion and skin care to food and events, her blog covers everything so it’s not really a surprise that she has a massive number of followers on her social media, including a wafty 15.6k on her Instagram. When asked about her blogging success and what she looks at for inspiration she says: “Anything and everything really. Life experiences, things I think will help people; things I enjoy reading or looking up. And of course, I wanted it to be an advice site so if anyone asked what restaurant to go to etc. I can just say look at the food page and I’ve reviewed basically all of them!” Blogging is a huge business now, yet the fashion and lifestyle blogger wasn’t always so keen on blogging, having had her blog since she was 15, she never really got into it until she graduated from university. “Blogging is a huge business now, and I set up one when I was about 15 then didn’t continue, then again when I was about 17 and also didn’t continue. I’ve now had The Southampton Girl for about 2 years and my advice is you just have to love it! You can’t do it because you think it’s popular or the cool thing to do, because you won’t get engagement. You have to genuinely love what you’re writing about otherwise you’ll never carry on with it.” As well as being an entrepreneur and business woman/blogger, Ellisha Jade is also a foody, an avid diner. Her blog is partly based on food, advising the people of Southampton the do’s and don’ts of the local food industry, including honest ratings and reviews. It’s something she loves so much, that it’s scheduled in to her weekly plan. “In the evenings I try and go to the gym 3 times a week, fit in time with friends and family and get in some blog work in the evenings too. I also LOVE going out for dinner so I try to go at least once a week. Fitting all of that in takes some planning but I try and get some sleep in in-between it all!” However, a new guy seemed to get the wrong end of the stick and took Ellisha Jade to McDonalds as a date. Something she wasn’t all too pleased with! This led to him being her number one worst date. “I once got the coach to London to meet a guy I’d met a few times before. He hadn’t planned anything at all, so we went to McDonalds for dinner then just sat at his house for the whole night while he watched funny videos on Facebook. Then, the next day, I took him to Chelsea Starbucks on Kings Road (my favourite place in London) and he hated it, so I knew it would never work. My Starbucks order sounds like I’m speaking another language. Then for lunch we went to Burger King in the train station. It’s safe to say I didn’t see him again …”.

T

here’s an ultimate revolation when it comes to snapchat, a social media revolved around your phone camera. Snapchat has grown phenomenally these past seven years with a net worth of £2.7 billion but Snap has received some criticism these past few weeks. It began when the US company updated their app late February. This created many complaints by users. Nic Rumsey, a frequent user of Snapchat, posted a petition to try and get the old version back. The petition got 1.2 million signatures the reasoning behind “many users have found that it has not made the app easier to use, but has, in fact, made many features more difficult”. Not only have users been unhappy with the update but Snapchat has also received some complaints from celebrities. The Snapchat Queen, Kylie Jenner tweeted “sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me... ugh this is so sad” this cost the company £1 billion and proves that the update has not been a success. Rihanna has also slammed the company after making light of domestic abuse. Snap posted an advertisement for a ‘would you rather’ gaming app where it asked users ‘would you rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown?’. This yet again had another effected on their stock, down by 8%. Snapchat commented on the issue “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.” This also caused many other famous faces to tweet about the issue, model and wife to John Legend, Chrissy Teigen said she is ‘dropping the app’. It clear that Snapchat have made numerous mistakes these past few weeks. Is it the end of the streak of success for Snapchat? Or is this just a little bump in the road?

Change Your

TUNE

The ever-changing music that we hear today is something that keeps everyone on their feet. New albums never fail to excite listeners and change sound as we hear it today. With the most recent vevival and popularity being Hip-Hop, could there already be a new evolved style of music that has come to take its place? Previously in music history we have been introduced to the beauty of other languages featuring in songs such as the classic pop songs of Decpacito and Gangnam Style, both songs derived from other cultures yet famously popular here in the UK. However different languages have slowly made their way into the HipHop genre through multiple different rappers, keeping with the trending genre as well as evolving it. It’s hard to pin-point the exact time that this trend began but we can certainly see a timeline of popularity. Rapper, singer and songwriter XXXTENTACION, recently released his new album ‘?,’ and within a couple of days, a couple of his songs landed in the top 10 for iTunes and apple music. In one of his most loved songs ‘I don’t even speak Spanish lol,’ as you can guess by the title, the whole song is not sang in English! The first verse of the song is sung in Spanish. X does not specify why he has chosen to go down this route but we know his album is all about the feelings of the songs rather than the words. This could be a major factor to why he has chosen to feature a different language, so people can

connect with the feel of the song rather than the lyrics. Another music culture has slowly but surely wormed its way in to English music. Korean Pop is a genre that’s always been around and weaved it’s way into the charts from time to time. A KPOP band BTS has gained a lot of media attention within the past few days with them announcing a tour that will of course come to the UK and they are now the face of LG smartphones with their recent success. One of BTS’s tracks entitled ‘MIC DROP’ has recently become a massive hit with the song being remixed with famous rap artist Desiigner. The song was the first K-pop song to hit No.1 on the US iTunes chart and hit within the top 50 of the official UK chart. Now who’s seen the big hit Black Panther out in cinema’s at the moment? With the movies soundtrack hitting the charts at an alarming rate, the film and artists have done amazing work to incorporate traditional African music culture within the music as well as sound affects during the movie. Alongside the African culture, the soundtrack is still heavily rap and Hip-Hop driven, featuring famous rap artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West. Could this be the new direction of music as we know it today? Could this be the new big trend people will be blasting out of their car speakers? Only time will tell but it’s clear culture has had a big impact on how we listen to music today.

In recent years, the crystal-clear ocean and interesting culture of Croatia has resulted in it being an up and coming holiday destination for families and party goers. Croatia offers various beautiful locations which suit different types of holiday goers depending on their agenda. From moonlit festivals that take place day and night to silent fishing villages that offer relaxation and a step away from normality – Croatia has it all. One of the most popular destinations to visit in Croatia is Pula, a historic city in the North of the Country. Pula holds one of Europe’s leading festivals, Outlook, which hosts very well-known DJs and artists. The festival takes place from the 5th of September to the 9th, so festival goers can still enjoy the cosy summer heat whilst partying, but don’t fear, Outlook is placed in perfect location so you can cool off in the rippling waters. Pula is also home to Dimensions festival which was nominated in the UK festival awards for best overseas festival. Dimensions festival is held on the 29th of august to the 2nd of September so for major festival addicts you could kill 2 birds with one stone and vacation in the beautiful city in between Dimensions festival and Outlook festival. As well as being party central, Pula is also prime location for families, couples or friends looking to go on a relaxing holiday with beautiful scenery. The north region of Croatia is mostly known for its venetian era port towns and top seaside destinations such as Porec and Rovinj.

If rugged and timeless is your cup of tea, then the south of Croatia will get your heart racing with its less developed yet beautiful cities. Dubrovnik features some of Croatia’s most beautiful historic buildings as well as having the ocean by its side, it offers the best of both worlds for explorers who love seeing the true culture and history of a city but also like to relax and enjoy the hot weather. Split is one of Croatia’s most vibrant port cities and is stunningly located between mountains and cities. Split is often visited by stags and hens getting their partying out of their system before their big day, no one can blame them when Split has amazing nightlife that welcomes everyone. From Split there are day trips available that enable tourists to view the magical blue and green caves that glow in the darkness or you could rent a car and drive to the Plitvice lakes that hold breath-taking waterfalls with gorgeous lagoons to swim in at the bottom. Croatia’s most visited Island is Hvar, a trendy upper class location that sees celebs come and go on their multi-million pound yachts. Hvar has welcomed A-listers such as Beyonce, George Clooney and even his Royal highness, Prince Harry. The fact that Hvar is rated so highly by very important people suggests it must be worth a visit. Although prices zoom upwards on the prestigious Island, it is worth spending time there to feel luxurious and important, even if it is only for one day.
