SWEAT VS STREET As the activewear trend continues to grow, Carbon helps you find your fit-spiration this season

“It is the moment of sportswear in fashion,” Calling all gym hunnies, find your own fit-spiration this season with the new 2019 activewear trend which runways have recently been sweating over. Fila is kick starting this trend by introducing a coed collection inspired by sailing, tennis and swimming where “sporty references and urban attitude” is met. Logo swimsuits, V-neck retro T-shirts and the polo shirts match with coordinated pants reflecting Fila’s core business. Designers also managed to translate the sporty inspiration into a dynamic, urban daywear. Rooted in the same cool, the men’s range spanned from color-blocked hoodies and graphic parkas with a sailing feel to effortless suits for the rebellious businessman of today. Fenty X Puma closed out New York Fashion week in 2018.

Off White was also seen at Paris Fashion Week presenting their sport and street stlye collaboration. “There was a big win for women in sports tonight at Off-White, Eight elite athletes—gold medal goddesses of our time—walked alongside the more familiar stars of fashion, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid” The colelction was called “Track and field” annd Serena Williams helped to design the famous tutu-skirted tennis dress which she wore for her comeback at the U.S. Opens. This design was part of the Serena Williams x Nike Queen collection.

“It was really refreshing for me not to be in fashion mode. It was performance,” said Abloh. “With fashion, you can just get into the appearance, but she’s stupendous, such a muse” Keep on track with these glamerous high end fashion brands for the latest comfy, verstitile clothing colabs to make you feel stylish during an intense workout. Brands such as Adidas and Nike are not fashion brands. The company listenns to the needs of each athlete annd solves them with innovative solutions but they acknwoledge womens fashion experiences within sport. Women then don’t have to choose between highly functional, technical product and fashionable products. “It’s what our consumer wants. It’s an essential part of the brand…”

Men in We see through you man! As you’re in town good Sir, please put your nipples away. Of course, I joke. Actually this transparent trend in menswear has made it quite big over 2018 and 2019 is sure to push the boundaries even more. What at first was seen to promiscuous for even women, has now got men gasping to be apart of the trend too. If you cant beat them join them and the guys are looking fab! Transparent material originally was used for women lingerie and rather discreetly moved its way into our everyday wear; starting to appear on dresses to other garments like tops. However, it was always for womenswear, this is probably because it has connotations of a sensual material - the transparency conveying what is under the clothing is something that typically would always appeal to men, less than women, therefore these mesh, lace and transparent materials would souly appear on clothes for women. A massive use of the material is used for stage outfits and costumes for celebrities when performing. Popularity increased with this textile material because of pop culture and the amount it’s used on stage with celebrity performances. This huge celebrity endorsement started

decades back and iconically shocked crowds all over the world. Notably when Prince did it, with his bottom on show on the stage at the 1991 VMA’s. It was extremely scandalous and controversial - even more so because he was a male. Which brings me to my next point…is it too feminine? No. What is too feminine for a man these days anyway? Really you can wear what you want in todays society and people will 99.9% of the time just accept that’s who you are and that is what you want to wear. If transparent or lace shirts is your bag then go for it! Endless amount of stores are selling this trend, with a huge variety of designs and styles - and the styles are exceptional. Nightlife clothing has delved deep into the see-through shirt fad. Perfect way to look sexy, casual and stylish all at the same time with these pretty funky apparels. They are the best way to show of physiques, and a go to if they happen to be hitting the gym that month. As a summer or holiday shirt they are jaw dropping, allows so many more patterns, materials and cuts to play with when working with transparent menswear. This truly is an exciting time for the fashion world, it’s about time menswear was spiced up a little and 2019 is doing this by cooling them down.

Revolution of

m i n e d e l b u Do There is a new meaning to double denim this 2019, are you ready to find out what it is? Layering your denim is all the rage and it’s a lot like marmite‌ you either love it or hate it. We are loving it! This trend is layering these different denims dark to light over each other to create this new innovation. Spotted in various high-street shops, already people are going crazy for this craze. The jean industry always change up their biggest trend each year, what cut or colour is in, but now they are trying something never done before and dipping their toes into something far beyond just the casual skinny jean. Where did this trendy innovation start?

12 CARBON - innovations edit

being sold in stores such as: Topshop, Urban Outfitters and H&M. Open minded year, last year. At the end of 2018 we saw this trend work its way into the limelight. Instagram layered up the posts with these layered jeans and it’s catching on. Exploring this double denim trend with in a variety of garments: from jackets to jeans and light to darks, overlapping one another in a funky and fresh way. From flares, mom jeans, skinny and ‘Jeggings’ - jeans have come along way since they were first worn and this could be the next exciting design for this denim decade.

Words: Izzy Short, Images: Unsplash

This trend has actually been around for a long time, just hiding in the shadows being pulled out once and a while, just like that old jumper you leave in the back of your closet and you bring out just because you spent money on it. This trend was worn by Rihanna back in 2013 from her own line of clothing and was commented on by various designers on just how bold this look was. 2013 didn’t seem quite ready for this trend, with a lot of backlash received 2019 are braving it and ready for that second chance. This new agenda for layered jeans will be a hit or miss, already

The tights of 2019! Melting tights

Summer will be here soon enough and some people have decided they love melting in the heat - so why not show it… We’ve had some crazy trends over the years but this one is seeming to stick. These dripping paint tights first came to be in September 2012, when URB a German brand created them, hand-made using latex to create the texture for the drips. This unique innovation was all over Tumblr and even made its way on to Nickelodeon a few years ago - promoting the Nickelodeon signature drips. Are we seeing this trend come back? Apparently so. This trend must have melted its way on to our hearts.

14 CARBON - innovations edit

URB are pushing for this fashion twist again and its catching on to more and more online stores. The tights/ leggings were a huge hit with people who identify as ‘punk’. Punks are known for their ‘I’ll wear what I want’ outlook, no matter how unusual if they like it, they’ll wear it and these tights are no exception. 2018 released some of the biggest punk albums, potentially a reason we see a spike in the punky clothing. Another possible theory: is this because of all the slime videos on instagram that people are starting to see a link in the rise of the dripping paint tights. People went crazy for slime last year and now they’re even bringing the trend to their clothing. I know what you’re probably thinking “ew gooey slime and runny paint down my legs? No thank you” but honestly some of these stylings are pretty funky. We’re always trying to express ourselves in different ways with various garments and these are probably the most interesting tights we’ve ever seen. Mostly coloured neon or black, which makes them stand out even more. But you can’t deny these tights in glitter are the coolest and for £35 we’re on board!

Moschino Sharpie tights

Moschino were going old school (literally) and throwing it back to the days of PE, homework and getting told “this is not a hairdressers”. Yup, that’s right they’ve brought it back to school time! Jeremy Scott dropped Moschino’s Spring 2019 collection and it took us right back. Felt tip sketches and sharpie marks all around this style from hats, tights to dresses. It was cool, creative and classic. The idea behind the collection in Scotts words was that it was to look like he “hadn’t had time to finish

the collection, all (he) had was sketches” and that’s what was reflected on the catwalk. Walking down the catwalk were all the tools of the trade from pin balls, measuring tapes, sketches, even to the ideas that spark Scotts imagination - he pushed it all down the runway. The models down the runway described this collection as “super eccentric and sexy, all in the right way”. As per usual, Moschino is sketching outside the lines and quite literally this time. The glamorous looks drew down the runway was full of imagination and captured what fashion is all about - the creation and imagination poured through every design. The tights became almost iconic with black scribbled marks down them as they were paired with almost every look. The garments were very 80’s influenced - waist tie bows, sleeved tops and puffy skirts all designed over with this dreamy, imaginative and “unfinished” styling. Will this be the next huge tight trend, a lot of people loved drawing on themselves in school, Jeremy Scott is trying to take us all back to that childhood wonder and imagination and wow did he do a great job!

The Rise Of

16 CARBON - innovations edit

Transgender Visability In the modern era, as LGBT issues become more spoken about, Carbon looks at the rise of trans visibility and how being LGBT is becoming more accepted in society.

Only a few years ago, LGBT issues were very taboo. Being transgender was less accepted than it is today due to the attitudes of past generations. But as we move through today’s generation it is not only accepted by many people, but LGBT issues have started to become involved in the fashion industry. Fashion can be used to express feelings and emotion so what better way to spread awareness on LGBT issues. Transgender models are now being accepted within the fashion and modelling industries also. Back in September, as part of New York Fashion Week, L A based fashion designer Macro Marco (Marco Morante) decided to use a fully transgender cast of models to walk his show. According to cosmopolitan.com, all 34 models identify as transgender, which is a huge step in the right direction towards the start of acceptance towards the LGTB community and towards trans people alone.

Words: Jordan Burrows, Images: Unsplash

Recently it came out that Victoria’s Secret would not cast transgender models as it would “take away the fantasy” of the annual fashion show. This caused outrage within trans women especially but now that more brands are beginning to accept trans people in their fashion shows and also in print, it enables this positive message to be spread regarding acceptance to others. Morante said to Mic, “I wanted to create a space to celebrate trans bodies, this was an opportunity for their presence to be undeniable and reinforce that trans is beautiful.” There are other brands out there that are also trying to raise visibility to trans individuals. In 2017, L’oreal hired black, transgender model Munroe Bergdorf for one of their campaigns in order to promote equality and diversity. This just goes to show that transgender people are rightly becoming slowly more accepted both in today’s society and within the fashion industry, too.

Optical

Illus

Ok, so what’s your take on optical illusion clothing? it’s been around for a while now time and it’s time to give it a spin? 2019 thinks so too! The famous Stella McCartney “miracle” Dress made a fashion influx in 2011. Every one wanted this dress to give that illusion of a perfect hour glass figure. This dress was everywhere for a while - work wear, casual, going out attire. McCartney was the innovator and every store hopped on the band wagon making this trend a classic that year. Optical illusions are more than just a mesmerising, scientific art form. Maybe you did happen to catch Kim K at the Peoples Choice Awards, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier, with the see through ankle-length dress, styled swirled lines creating an illusion for her iconic curves. This was such a big hit and spiralled even into our own wardrobes - and so soon after in fact.

This idea of illusions for the body and women curves has revolutionised drastically since the days of Kate Winslet, stepping out with chunky black lines down her sides at the Venice Film Festival.

clothing

Being able to exaggerate the beautiful bodies we were given in 2019 will be the most exciting trend of all. So many clothing options should make available to us this new unique illusion of our bodies, where we can express it to the world. We are always trying to exaggerate the parts of our body we love most so that the focus will be drawn to that exact place and this new pattern design allows you to do exactly that - should make this year stand out just like our bodies will.

This hypnotic dress is actually a vintage from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 1996 collection - vintage is always best right? Apparently so in this case, as we’re seeing this dress design recreated and selling in online stores already. How do you feel about this trend? Are you ready to accentuate your fashion with some illusions.

Floral

Food

Ah don’t you just love the smell of fresh flowers in the morning, would you enjoy eating them for breakfast too? The latest food trend this 2019 will be blossoming! We’ve always used flowers in some sense for food ingredients: Rose, Lavender, Hibiscus but now there will be a boom in floral bloom on our menus this 2019. Our food products will include flower essences more now than ever before. As decoration they’ve always been popular, as dried ingredients but it could be that flowers are the whole new taste this season - nothing says spring like fresh flowers. The most popular flowers you can eat include: roses, violets, daisies and nasturtiums (not the best to look at… so you might aswell eat them right). Every flower has different tastes so they’re will be an enormous new amounts of flavour to play with this year. The petals and blossoms go in salads, desserts, smoothies, syrups, teas (very popular) and gives all of the

26 CARBON - innovations edit

previously mentioned a unique floral flavouring, but why suddenly will we see more and more of this flavouring on our shelves?

2019 is bringing menus to the environment. In this day and age we are very conscious of what we are doing to our environment but also what we are putting in our bodies. What vitamins, herbs and minerals and the effects that they all have on the way our body is functioning. Not only this but the more substance we get from more ethical sources, the less un-environmental products will be produced and consumed - helping the environment. There are many benefits to eating flowers. The flowers which are deeper in colour contain a higher level of antioxidants. They also contain vitamin A, C and E and some flowers even have Vitamin D. A lot of research studies have been conducted on edible flowers over 2018 showing the health benefits from mental to physical. But it’s not all bright and colourful when it comes to eating flowers. Just in case you didn’t know, you can’t be walking around your local parks and picking up a quick snack off the ground - a lot of floral plants are actually the opposite of good for you and very poisonous. But don’t worry you will love this fanatic, floral flavour on the shelves and all the benefits that come along with it!

Grubbin’

What’s Crawling on to our menus this 2019? Apparently theres a new source of protein about and we’re not quite sure how on board with it you’re going to be… What if I told you the newest food craze was low in fat, exists in large quantities and could be found anywhere and everywhere. Interested? ok, now let me tell you it’s BUGS. So insects are on the menu for the new food trend of 2019, very exciting times, it’s the latest idea for a new source of protein to be introduced on to our menus but is it? Because different cultures have been doing this all around the world and for a very, very long time. It’s known as Entomophagy. Here’s some examples of original bug munchers: Thais have loved snacking on Grasshoppers, Crickets ad Woodworms for years. These creepy crawlies are seasoned and fried in a wok until crispy, then served at local markets to passerbyers. Another country crazy for this food includes Mexico, where they eat bugs in various of ways: fried, buttered or even dipped in chocolate. But perhaps the most world renowned is

28 CARBON - innovations edit

to drink them. You’ve probably heard of the tequila worm usually dropped into tequila and served to be swallowed, as it has absorbed the alcoholic beverage inside. China also take part in this food habit, one of their delicacies being roasted larvae such as bees, being served in high end restaurants. More on the streets of China you would find larger insects (like waterbugs) being roasted or fried and then put on a skewer to make them easy for a to-go treat. In Australia, insects such as the honeypot ant are consumed largely among Australian Aboriginal Tribes for centuries. These ants are an excellent source of essential nutrients for any bug-eating human. For reasons a little less by choice we have Ghana. During the springtime food is in short reply. People of Ghana early on termites as their main source of protein. The insects can be roasted, fried and surprisingly termites are also used to make bread. Grub Kitchen, a restaurant, on Lower Harglodd Farm in England, has been farmed on for over 300 years and yep, you guessed it they’ve been farming insects. This innovative restaurant create your favourite dishes with edible insects and they’re a big hit! They’re message is very environmental and say the reason behind their interesting menu is because “it’s beneficial for our nutrients and to the environment”. Grubs menu is fully focused on Entomophagy in their hopes to create a healthier and greener future.

Words: Izzy Short, Images: Unsplash

You should probably expect to see this on the locals shelves as this food trend, you could say, was along time coming and we don’t think anything will be stopping it soon. This innovative idea has been seen in various forms from powders, cocktails and some divine dishes. Special insect farms have now started to become established, due to this weird and wonderful food demand. With millions invested in purely to make its way on to our dinner tables. This wriggly treat looks like it’s here to stay for a while. But at the end of the day, are we sure we don’t already have enough ways to get protein from our menus? Maybe now, instead of describing bugs as “scar y”, “slimy” and “crawly” we’ll be licking our lips and calling them “tasty”.

Three days into the year and she already confirmed her appearance in Coachella, one of the biggest music festivals of the world. oming music YEAR AFTER YEAR NEW ARTISTS ARE DISCOVERED AND NEW MUSIC COMES TO LIFE, SO HERE ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW YET, BUT YOU WILL DEFINITELY BE LISTENING TO BEFORE THE YEAR ENDS.

CARBON - innovations edit 31

JACOB PAPPAS: This 19 year old from California started producing his own music in 2016 and even though he is not a really popular artist yet I am sure you will see loads from him in the future. The music student has taken influence from other artists and is still trying to find his own style, but for now, all his songs have a chill vibe that seems to make everyone like him. After years of seeing him grow into the artist that he is today I can assure you that every single one of his songs has something special.

32 CARBON - innovations edit

DIJON: If one of the Kardashians posts something about you on their Instagram you know you are going places. This artist based in L A is said to be the next Frank Ocean, so if you like that style of music, the alternative R&B that makes you want to dance but at the same time chill around, this is definitely your guy.

CARBON - innovations edit 33

PHARAOH: Unless you speak Russian I doubt you would understand anything of what his music artist from Moscow says, but do not worry he balances out with the vibes the music give. I guess we could say the he is what Drake would be to Canada. He is reaching out to a more international audience while keeping his culture and language present in his music. So, if you are tired of the usual commercial music give it a try and you will see you will not regret it.

34 CARBON - innovations edit

JUICE WRLD: Another 19 year old added to the list. The 99 generation is killing it lately and 2019 is, of course, going to be their year. This rapper just signed a contract with Interscope Records for over 3 million dollars after being discovered on Soundcloud. If you are wondering what his music talks about, it’s all about drugs and how no one gets teenagers. But don’t worry, he makes it sound different to anything else I’ve heard before.

HoW A Decade Of

Luxury and Innovation

changed the course of fashion forever... M

any are familiar with the glamourous aesthetic of the 1920s, popularised by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel ‘The Great Gatsby’, and brought to our screens with Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film adaptation. The iconic ‘flapper girl’ image is often parodied at fancy-dress parties, without an understanding for the magnitude of social and historical context behind the cropped hairstyles, short hemlines and cigarette holders. The image of the roaring twenties cannot be fully appreciated without knowledge of the preceding decades. The Victorian era had women constricted in their corsets and trapped within their homes. They were unable to vote, unlikely to work outside the home and shunned from families and society if they were perceived to be promiscuous or unfaithful. Though the turn of the century brought with it the First World War, it also sparked the suffragette movement, women’s right to vote and a new era of technology. Automobiles became more accessible and were seen as a sign of wealth, the stock market boomed and brought with it ‘The New Rich’. These changes blossomed in the 1920s creating an atmosphere of hedonism and rebellion against the past, which arguably was personified by the subculture of the ‘Flappers’. The Flapper’s cut their hair to short chin length bobs, rebelling against the Victorian standard of beauty that often called for women to maintain extremely long hair for intricate updo’s (those who couldn’t achieve this naturally, bought hair pieces), so the new short hairstyle was equivalent to the weight of the Victorian era cut off from a new generation of young women’s shoulder.. A large part of the ‘shock’ caused by the Flapper movement was their lifestyle, where previously Victorian had women remained in their homes, housekeeping and providing for their families. The

48 CARBON - innovations edit

Flapper women drank, smoked, swore, partied and ‘Charlestoned’ the night away. Their long cigarette holders were like an extended middle finger up at the restrictive patriarchal rule of the Victorian era. One of the most extreme and revoloutionary changes that the roaring twenties brought was the rise in hemlines. For centuries prior to the decade, the length of dresses for women had not risen above the floor, and only rose slightly in the 1910s to allow for more leisurely ‘walking dresses’. For women to be seen baring ankles and calves was a shock to many who were raised in the modest Victorian culture. The more revealing clothing brought with it a desire for women to shave and have smooth legs, this beauty ideal still persists to this day. However whilst this change was undoubtedly revolutionary for many women, the extent of the change is often exaggerated in popular culture, with many store bought flapper costumes/ media depictions situating the hemline at the mid-upper thighs, when realistically the ‘shocking’ hemlines of the flappers was seldom seen above mid-calf, and just below the knees at its most revealing. In reality, hemlines would not reach the ‘mini’ length until Mary Quants mini-skirts of the 1960s. [This misconception has likely been adopted by contemporary media to emphasise the contrast from the Victorian era to the 1920s to a modern audience, who would be unfazed by a woman choosing to bare her ankles.] As we approach the 2020s, it is soothing to look back and recall the fashion innovations of the previous centuries. Perhaps we will see a revival of the glamorous ‘Gatsby’ era and a subculture of neo-flappers.

Their (counter) culture rejected and challenged the idyllic fantasies of society in the previous decades. Though the culture has blossomed much further than its humble roots, (think pop-punk and cyberpunk), Carbon Innovations examines how the punk movement may resurface in the politically displeased youth.

At first glance, the extreme hairstyles and eyeliner of punk culture, may appear a far cry from the image obsessed youth of today. In some ways the aesthetics of the punk movement seem a complete opposite, from pale faces and black lipstick to a sun kissed glow and plumping gloss, the ways in which the youth of the punk subculture and youths of today present themselves is completely at odds with one another. However, the punk image would not be as iconic if it were not based on the ‘controversial’ political views of the subculture, safety pins and tears in clothes were badges of alignment to the rejection of mainstream culture, such an aesthetic was demonised in a media moral panic, as society feared the changes that the radical punk youths demanded. Contemporary society is growing more accepting in the ways that individuals choose to dress and express themselves, perhaps this is directly linked to the growth of technology and social media, that allows individuals to voice their opinions across a multitude of platforms. Where the punk beliefs of the 1970s were defined in their music and image, the youth of today can broadcast theirs in a tweet, an Instagram caption, an online petition or a viral video, these messages can transcend physical borders, uniting people of similar beliefs across the globe. Yet, the iconography of punk culture still re-emerges, in 2016, a twitter campaign rose to popularity that had users donning safety pins to show alliance to ethnic minorities and vulnerable groups in the post-referendum social climate. User @ cheeas wrote: “#safetypin - for EU nat’ls and for immigrants, this means I’m a safe person in an unsafe world.”, the symbol brings back to punk beliefs in solidarity to groups who need it, whether that be the working class, LGBTQ+ or ethnic minorities.

Though the explosive music of the Punks may not be to everyone’s taste, the idea of inclusion and support for those who most need it, is just as a hot topic in contemporary society as it was in the 1970s. An infographic shared in August 2018 by Survation, based on an average of 4 polls, suggested that over 70% of people aged 18-24 would vote remain in a second Brexit referendum, compared to 35% of those over 65%. Could youth dissatisfaction of the current political climate ignite a new wave of punk culture?
